Abstract

This collection of working papers in linguistics includes four works. "Autour de la racine indo-europeenne 'pet-' ('voler') (pour servir a l'histoire des faits latins)" ("Concerning the Indo-European Root 'Pet-' ('To Fly') (To Serve as an Example of Latin Facts)" by Claude Sandoz looks at the Latin manifestations of the root and illustrates the value of historico-comparative analysis. In "Analyse hierarchique et fonctionnelle du discours: co-enonciation et mouvement discursif" ("Hierarchic and Functional Discourse Analysis: Co-Enunciation and Discourse Movement"), Therese Beguin-Jeanneret applies discourse analysis in a new way, a conversation between two children and an adult. "Quelques remarques sur l'excommunication dans les interactions verbales en face a face" ("Some Remarks on Excommunication in Verbal Face-to-Face Interactions") by Serge Rubi examines conversational processes used to break off one topic of discussion for various reasons. In "Enseigner le francais L2 a des debutants avec une methode 'communicative'" ("Teaching French as a Second Language to Beginning Adults with the 'Communicative' Method"), Francoise Redard reflects on her own experiences teaching French to this population, focusing on whether having the objective of immediate communication is appropriate in all cases. Abstract

This selected bibliography, designed to back up a working document of the International Bureau of Education (IBE), has been prepared for the 43rd session of the International Conference on Education (September 14-19, 1992). The document has been put together with the help of the Documentation Center of the IBE and the UNESCO database. It consists only of works in English and French, written or published during recent years. Abstract

This volume reports on the flow of graduates from higher education into working life in Portugal, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland. Chapters for each nation were contributed by national experts in that field. The first section of the report, on Portugal, contains two papers. The first, written in English, discusses recent changes in the higher education system there, and the second, written in French, looks at higher education output during the 1980s, employment and social and regional mobility, and current trends and future challenges. This chapter also reports on a special study concerning degree holders from Portugal's agricultural schools. The section on the United Kingdom consists of one paper (in English) that describes students in higher education, provides an institutional background on the graduate labor market, analyses patterns and trends in graduate output, and discusses other trends, particularly in the new graduate labor market. The one chapter on Sweden, also written in English, describes higher education there, training from the upper secondary level to higher education, output from the higher education system, the graduate labor market, qualification levels for various educational categories, the relationship between longer education and higher income, and earnings for men and women. The final section, on Switzerland, is written in French and covers the context of the Swiss system of higher education, the structure of the system, and statistical information concerning the students who enroll in the system, as well as the transition from higher education to work, and aspects of the employment market in Switzerland. 4. Croissance et developpment de l'enfant: 25 ans d'activities internationales coordonnees. Growth and Development of the Child: 25 Years of Internationally Coordinated Activities.

Abstract

This special issue of the "Courrier," a journal for professionals concerned with issues related to the physical and psychological development of children, provides (1) an overview of 25 years of internationally coordinated research, (2) a selection of papers published by the research teams, and (3) a description of the teams and their present status. The origin and international expansion of the program for longitudinal studies is described in the first article. The subsequent 15 articles cover a wide range of topics. Studies concerned with physical development focus on the skeletal maturation of the hand and wrist; growth in the density of normal infants' subcutaneous cellular tissue; age of onset of menarche and associated factors among Parisian girls; clinical transformations of puberty in young girls; international comparisons of infants' physical growth; development and maturation of young children in Dakar; Gessell tests on African children; parent-child correlations for body measurements of children between the ages of 1 month and 7 years; the somatic development of urban, Swedish children; and analysis of the adolescent growth spurt using smoothing spline functions. The one study focused solely on psychological development discusses intellectual development from birth to 18 years of age. Studies covering both psychological and physiological development examine bowel and bladder control during the day and at night in the first 6 years of life; trends in the development of abilities related to somatic growth; individual differences as seen in developmental and intelligence quotient curves from 6 months to 17 years; and a comparison of infant development in five western countries.
