It is widely recognised that high-stakes assessment can significantly influence what is taught in the classroom. Many argue that high-stakes assessment results in a narrowed curriculum where students learn by rote rather than developing higher cognitive skills. This paper describes a study investigating the various cognitive objectives present from Bloom’s Taxonomy Educational Objectives on the Leaving Certificate biology examination. The study analysed examination papers from the past and current biology syllabuses. Analysis was also carried out to determine the marks being awarded to the different cognitive objectives. The findings show that the examination predominately includes questions that do not promote higher levels of thinking. The majority of the marks on the paper were allocated to the lower objectives of the taxonomy, suggesting students can rely on rote learning to succeed when undertaking the biology examination. This study strongly highlights how high-stake examinations have a narrow scope in terms of student achievement and shows how current biology examination procedures promote low-level learning. This low level of thinking promotes rote learning and regurgitation of facts, requiring little to no understanding of the topics. The official position of the Church of England (CofE) regarding human sexuality affirms a heteronormative ideal of human relationship that finds fulfilment in marriage with an orientation towards procreation. Official publications by the CofE justify the male/female partnership in several ways, but it is the recurring appeal to human biology that is of interest in this paper. This paper will critique a natural law approach in which prescriptive statements are derived from biology to justify heterosexual relationships. This paper will pay attention to Issues in Human Sexuality (1991) because of the status afforded to it by the CofE; it was essentially used as an official statement on human sexuality; ordinands have been asked to abide by its theology; and because its theology is explicitly affirmed in subsequent CofE documents. Biologists use mathematical models as part of their research regularly. However, in schools, biology lessons rarely use mathematics, even if using it benefits understanding the biological content. Aiming for this integration, we designed an interdisciplinary educational comic with biological and mathematical content, where the chosen theme from biology was natural selection. This paper outlines the educational comic content and the principles used for the development based on the story, visual and content aspects. AbstractMuch of the debate over the definition and criteria for determining our death has focused on disagreement over the correct biological account of death, i.e., what it means for any organism to die. In this paper, we argue that this exclusive focus on the biology of death is misguided, because it ignores ethical and social factors that bear on the acceptability of criteria for determining our death. We propose that attention shift from strictly biological considerations to ethical and social considerations that bear on the determination of what we call “civil death.” We argue for acceptance of a neurological criterion for determining death on grounds that it is the most reasonable way to synthesize biological, ethical, and social considerations about our death.. This paper engages with the entwined questions of science and ideology through a symptomatic reading of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go (2005), studying how power, racism, and capital intervene into the genetic enterprise of tampering with the limitations of the human and produce a supplicant race of clones for organ harvest and extraction. I commence by drawing on Donna Haraway’s concept of gene fetishism and Evelyn Fox Keller’s notion of gene talk to trace how an elision of the ideological frameworks of race and capital subtending genomics in Ishiguro’s dystopian world instrumentalizes the creation of the clones as racialized products. I bring into dialogue the clones’ obsessive quest for familial origins with Deborah Bolnick’s exploration of the reification of race as biology through ancestry tests to analyze how technology can be used to create and legitimize racism. Deploying Kaushik Sundar Rajan’s theorization of biocapital and James Doucet-Battle’s analysis of the intersections of race, capitalism, and time, I study how the clones are discursively defined as fungible commodities in service to a futurity from which they are precluded. I conclude by positing the call for “slow science” as a potential strategy against the accelerationism and market-ready speculations that dictate biotechnical enterprises today. The concept of regulation pervades biology, for example in models of genetic regulatory networks and the endocrine system. Regulation has a normative opposite, dysregulation, which figures prominently in biomedical models of disease. The use of normative concepts in biology, however, has been thought to present some challenges for the physicalist view of the world, and various resolutions have been proposed. Up to now the problem of biological normativity has been debated largely in connection with the concept of biological information. In this paper we shift focus to the concept of biological regulation, proposing that it provides a promising new approach to these issues. Models of regulatory systems have several features: they are causal, but they do not deal with the energy exchanges and transformations covered by physics and chemistry; further, and entirely connected, regulatory systems can break down, and this is because they and their causal-regulatory properties are dependent on fragile molecular structures. Biological regulatory systems exhibit normativity, because they are not determined by physical and chemical laws, but their close relationship with physical laws and physicalist ontology is transparent. Our collaborative action research addresses a challenge in initial teacher education pertaining to the lack of theoretical coherence between teacher candidates' understandings of teaching and learning. The group comprised of three science teacher candidates (Authors 2 and 3) and a university faculty member (Author 1). Through a loosely adapted learning study approach, we embarked on the process of learning to apply a theoretical lens, i.e. variation theory, to frame lessons taught during the school-based practicum; we focused on the use of variation, which is a pedagogical strategy that is undertheorized in biology education. In this paper, we provided a description and reflection of the theory-framed lessons teacher candidates in our group taught. Data sources included lesson plans and materials, video recordings of lessons, reflections and teacher interviews that promoted further articulation of our experiences of the action research process. By comparing our employment of variation theory to frame lesson planning, classroom teaching and student learning, patterns of variation were reflected upon and theorized through the group process. This expanded our collective understandings about the application of variation theory to biology teaching. A complete workflow was presented for estimating the concentration of microorganisms in biological samples by automatically counting spots that represent viral plaque forming units (PFU) bacterial colony forming units (CFU), or spot forming units (SFU) in images, and modeling the counts. The workflow was designed for processing images from dilution series but can also be applied to stand-alone images. The accuracy of the methods was greatly improved by adding a newly developed bias correction method. When the spots in images are densely populated, the probability of spot overlapping increases, leading to systematic undercounting. In this paper, this undercount issue was addressed in an empirical way. The proposed empirical bias correction method utilized synthetic images with known spot sizes and counts as a training set, enabling the development of an effective bias correction function using a thin-plate spline model. Its application focused on the bias correction for the automated spot counting algorithm LoST proposed by Lin et al. Simulation results demonstrated that the empirical bias correction significantly improved spot counts, reducing bias for both fixed and random spot sizes and counts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper details the content and structure of the folk concept of life, and discusses its relevance for scientific research on life. In four empirical studies, we investigate which features of life are considered salient, universal, central, and necessary. Functionings, such as nutrition and reproduction, but not material composition, turn out to be salient features commonly associated with living beings (Study 1). By contrast, being made of cells is considered a universal feature of living species (Study 2), a central aspect of life (Study 3), and our best candidate for being necessary for life (Study 4). I summarize here the history of the use of abbreviations, mostly in subject areas related to dyes, stains and fluorescent probes used in biology and medicine. The dozen most popular abbreviations in these fields are identified and their salient characteristics noted. The pros and cons of each abbreviation are discussed with relevant citations. Certain abbreviations that are not in the list, e.g., AZAN and LN, are mentioned because they have an unusual origin; while others, i.e., INEPT and INADEQUATE are presented because they are bizarre. A related topic is abbreviations used for citations, which require further efforts to decipher. In the past, brevity helped conserve materials, such as ink and paper, and promoted more rapid publishing. The term "adaptive zone" appeared in paleontology and evolutionary biology, where it was not clearly defined, and gradually became obsolete and is now rarely used. This paper provides an updated definition of the term applicable in modern ecology and biogeography. It is shown that an adaptive zone is a particular case of Petersen-type communities. Sixteen implications were formulated that were theoretically derived from the facts known about range, Hutchinson's niche, Petersen-type community, and their relationships with adaptive zone amended definition. The review includes the creation of simple and logical methods for finding, naming, and classifying adaptive zones. This regulates the conceptual apparatus of biology and opens up new lines of research in several of its branches. The applied aspects of the new adaptive zone concept are many current issues that include fisheries, aqua- and agriculture, forestry and hunting, natural nidality, combating alien species, weeds, pests and parasites, environmental protection, and artificial ecosystem creation. A Case Study is included that contains examples of maps of the adaptive zones of fauna from the far eastern seas and the northern part of the Pacific Ocean, which is one of the most important fishing regions in the world. Biological nomenclature contains metadata that can inform researchers about a taxon's place in nature and the namer's place in contemporary science and culture. The socio-scientific content of that metadata, and the story it conveys about the origin of a scientific name, hold value for taxonomy and interest for the public in general. However, such metadata are perishable if not hard-coded into literature. Accordingly, the present paper attempts to document the use and value of socio-scientific metadata through examples of whimsical taxonomic names. In the process, I capture hitherto unpublished views on this topic expressed by George Gaylord Simpson, the twentieth century's most distinguished vertebrate palaeontologist and a co-founder of the modern synthetic theory of evolution, along with personal perspectives of many of the eminent palaeozoologists and biologists of his time. The principal conclusion is that whimsical names will surely increase in their ubiquity in scientific literature, and this commends acknowledgement in the international zoological code to encourage the preservation of their origin stories. With electronic communication rapidly changing the scientific working environment, the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature works on three major initiatives to adapt the current Code while, at the same time, safeguarding the stability of nomenclature. An Amendment to the Code has been proposed to allow electronic-only publications as available outlets for nomenclatural information. Such names would need to be registered in ZooBank, the proposed official registry of zoological nomenclature. For names and nomenclatural acts published through traditional, paper-based works, registration would be voluntary but encouraged. A new, more user-friendly edition of the zoological Code is in preparation. Govindjee has continued to make scientific contributions through collaboration with colleagues all across the world and has generously sought to highlight the contributions of others by taking the lead in inviting others to join in writing memorials for his colleagues, and his own former graduate students (see e.g. Govindjee, Munday, et al. [50]; Govindjee et al. [54]; Govindjee, Nonomura, et al. [53]; Govindjee, Zilinskas, et al. [69]). From that point, we started a collaboration that led to the co-authorship of numerous papers (see e.g. Papageorgiou and Govindjee [133]; Kana et al. [88]), and reviews on the biophysical aspects of photosynthesis (see e.g. Papageorgiou and Govindjee [134]), co-hosting of many international conferences, and an edited book on the basics and applications of Chl I a i fluorescence (Papageorgiou and Govindjee [135], reprinted in 2010). I especially remember several times at Gordon Conferences and Photosynthesis Congresses in beautiful outdoor surroundings listening to him reminisce about his experiences with some of the giants of the early days of photosynthesis, including Robert Emerson (Govindjee's first PhD advisor before his death in a plane crash on the way to Harvard), Eugene Rabinowitch (who was Govindjee's advisor after the tragedy; see Govindjee et al. Shortcomings in sex and relationship education (SRE) related to norms and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexuality (LGBTQIA) perspectives have been reported internationally and in Sweden. This paper reports on findings from a critical study of SRE content in Swedish biology textbooks for 13- to 16-year-old pupils, with the aim of revealing which sexual orientations and bodies are made visible or invisible in the texts. About 200 quotations were selected and analysed, quantitatively and qualitatively, with a focus on limitations and possibilities. The results show that LGBT content is visible in all SRE chapters. However, sexual orientation is often constructed as fixed. Furthermore, stereotypical gender binaries are reinforced via heteronormative assumptions regarding hormones, genitals and reproduction, focusing on differences instead of similarities, and thus limiting the‌ potential to widen non-binary perceptions of bodies and sexualities. Our quantitative analyses reveal that there are few, if any, queer, intersex, asexual or crip/disability representations. If gaps in young people's knowledge regarding norms, intersex, asexuality, queer and crip sexualities are to be filled in order to promote equality and diversity, it is important to rethink the SRE content of Swedish biology textbooks. This paper takes as its starting point a letter written by Virginia Woolf in 1940 which speculates about the possibility of ending war. 'Can we change sex characteristics?' Woolf asks. 'How can we alter the crest and the spur of the fighting cock?' In writing this letter, Woolf recalls a passage she read in 1932 from the biological textbook The Science of Life, co-written by Julian Huxley: a passage which, in Woolf's terms, describes a 'hen that became a cock or vice versa'. The paper demonstrates that Woolf's writing of this period, particularly Three Guineas and Between the Acts, responds to Huxley's works of popular biology, specifically their discussion of secondary sex characteristics, hormones, and the mutability of biological sex, in order to envision a way out of the repeating cycle of violent domination that she traces in contemporary society, and to conceive of a future society not built upon a binary model of sex or gender. It proposes a non-linear conception of feminist history in which Woolf's texts—with their depiction of sex as plural and alterable through human agency—display a sympathy with our current understanding of sex: an aspect of her writing that has been overlooked by intermediate commentators. The common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) is an epipelagic thermophilic species with a worldwide distribution in tropical and subtropical regions that is characterized by its migratory behavior and fast growth rates. This species is targeted by artisanal small-scale and recreational fisheries in most regions where it is found. This paper updates and analyzes the global scientific knowledge on the biology and ecology of this species, which was last revised at a regional level 20 years ago. This review showed an increase in knowledge about the population structure and regional differences in biological traits, in parallel with a notable lack of mechanistic and even empirical knowledge about the ecology of this species, which hampers a good understanding of the population dynamics and the potential impacts of environmental change. This paper also updates the information about the Mediterranean dolphinfish fishery, where the main four countries that exploit this species deploy 30% of fish aggregation devices (FAD) worldwide. The results suggest, among other effects, some temporal synchronicity in landings across countries, potential interannual stock movement affecting inter-country catches, diverging trends in prices and insufficient quality in the estimates of fishing effort. The Alzheimer's disease (AD) research landscape is dominated by efforts to predict and prevent the condition. In clinical practice, it is difficult to establish normal aging from pathological cognitive deterioration and "imaginaries of deterioration" tied to "loss of self" take on a material form and impact assessment and diagnostic practice. Drawing on qualitative data gathered across a memory service in the UK, this paper captures practitioners' reflections on the utility and potential impact of prediction and earlier detection. Practitioners maintain that this biological framing may reinforce uncertainties associated with sociocultural depictions of the condition and reify normative values concerning cognition and age; provoking questions concerning what kinds of values are produced by, and aligned with, bioscientific agendas. Overall, there emerges a paradox entangled in biologically redefining AD: purported precision and prediction on the one hand and increasing uncertainty on the other entwined with sociocultural imaginings of a future with AD. In Critique of the Power of Judgment, Kant claims organisms are to be judged as 'natural ends', which are products of nature but inexplicable by mechanical laws of nature. The conception of natural ends necessarily leads to the idea of nature in its whole as a system of ends. This paper proposes an interpretation of Kant's biological teleology that can be compatible with modern science. Mechanical laws in the third Critique are understood as empirical causal laws that determine all phenomena. A living organism is mechanically inexplicable, not because it falls outside of mechanical laws, but because the reciprocal productions of its parts are unifiable under its whole, as if designed by an intelligent agency according to the concept of the whole. Once we judge teleologically the mechanical laws determining the organic productions, we must judge teleologically all productions determined by these laws and therefore conceive nature in its whole as a system of ends, to which natural mechanism is subordinated. Endogenous carbon monoxide (CO) is an important intracellular gas messenger that is intimately involved in many physiological and pathological processes. The abnormal concentration of CO in living organisms can cause many diseases. Therefore, it is of great significance to monitor CO in biological samples. Fluorescent probe technology provides an effective and convenient method for CO monitoring, with the advantages of high selectivity and sensitivity, fast response time and in situ fluorescence imaging in biological tissues, which is favored by the majority of researchers. In this paper, the research progress of CO fluorescent probes since 2018 is reviewed, and the design, detection mechanism and biological application of the related fluorescent probes are summarized. And the relationship between the structure and performance of the probes is discussed. Furthermore, the development trend and application prospect of CO fluorescent probes are prospected. Young children develop understandings about literacy from birth through experiences of print in their home environments. Today, written text is often present in children's homes in both print and digital forms. What kind of technologies are young children accessing at home and for what purposes? This paper discusses research findings from questionnaires completed by parents about the home digital literacy practices of 105 Turkish children aged 5–7 years and the nature of parental support for digital technology use at home. Parent interviews with five families further identified the technologies used, the children's repertoire of digital literacy practices and issues confronting parents about children's use of technology. The study revealed that children were actively engaged in multimodal practices through the use of digital technologies in play and learning in their homes. The main implications of this study are that it is important that educators be aware of children's existing digital home literacy practices as a foundation for further literacy learning and that parents may need support in understanding how technology use can contribute to children's literacy learning. Children could internalise blame for a death, suffer as much grief as adults, and express as much emotion as adults. Research on young children's perceptions of death has been conducted primarily in Western cultures. This paper is an exploration of Chinese 5-year-olds' understanding of death. Data analyses are mainly based on children's drawings and their description of the drawings. Children's drawings of issues related to death were analysed using the phenomenographic method to identify content-specific categories. It is shown through this study that Chinese 5-year-olds have an initial understanding of the biological, psychological, and metaphysical concepts of death. Findings of the current study highlight the importance of paying more attention to the impact of cultural practices and religion on children's understanding of death. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Students love learning about animals: how animals behave, what animals eat, why some animals are more dangerous than others are, and why animals look the way they do. In this 5E lesson, students investigate why some animals look the way they do—specifically, the advantages of camouflage and mimicry. What are an animal's advantages of being camouflaged? How do animals become camouflaged? As the former driving questions suggest, this lesson is intended for third-to-fifth grade students to investigate camouflage and natural selection. Our objective was to investigate the impact of the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) on undergraduates’ ability to express logical conclusions and include appropriate evidence in formal writing assignments. Students in three laboratory sections were randomly allocated to the SWH treatment (n = 51 students) with another three sections serving as a control (n = 47 students). All sections received an identical formal writing assignment to report results of laboratory activities. Four blinded raters used a 6-point rating scheme to evaluate the quality of students’ writing performance. Raters’ independent scoring agreement was evaluated using Cronbach'sα. Paper scores were compared using at-test, then papers were combined into low-scoring (3.5 of 6 points) or high-scoring (>3.5 of 6 points) sets and SWH and control cohorts were compared using Pearson's chi-square test. Papers from the SWH cohort were significantly (P = 0.02) more likely to receive a high score than those from the control cohort. Overall scores of SWH cohort papers tended to be higher (P = 0.07) than those from the control cohort. Gains in student conceptual understanding elicited by the SWH approach improved student ability to express logical conclusions about their data and include appropriate evidence to support those conclusions in formal research reports. In this paper, we propose computational scientific inquiry (CSI) as an innovative model for learning important scientific knowledge and new practices for “doing” science. This approach involves the use of a “game-like” virtual world for students to experience virtual biological fieldwork in conjunction with using an agent-based computer model to enable computational inquiry activities. After an overview of literature into learning about scientific inquiry and the use of virtual worlds and game-like systems for learning science, we provide a description of the technology systems we developed and the methods of the study. The results are reported of a two-week intervention involving the use of a CSI approach in two eighth-grade classes that found significant learning gains by students. Relating mathematics learned in the classroom to real situations increases student motivation and enhances learning. In this paper, we provide an example of a classroom application of calculus to physiology in two courses: Differential Equations and Calculus I for Biology and Medicine. We designed and implemented a project that uses calculus to model the volume, flow, and pressure of air inside the lungs of a patient receiving positive pressure ventilation. After comparing mathematical models to a mechanically ventilated high-fidelity breathing simulator, students reported heightened interest in, and a greater appreciation for, the relevance of the calculus in both courses. The "Power Threat Meaning Framework" attempts to provide a coherent basis for conceptualizing clinical distress, troubled and troubling behavior in ways that avoid attributing it to unproven and hypothetical biological deficits, and that do not invoke insufficiently valid and reliable diagnostic categories. At the same time, the Framework retains a role for biology and identifies general patterns of distress. This paper describes the concept of meaning within the Framework, identifies some of its influences, and discusses its relationship to other concepts of meaning and to other aspects of the Framework. Over the course of 3 years, the Political Science and Biology Programs at a regional HBCU have built a curricular learning community centered on a mock trial competition, where a microbiology course was paired with an introductory legal studies course. Over the course of a semester, students enrolled in both courses studied a real appellate case that dealt with some aspect of forensic science (DNA evidence for example). The legal studies students were to act as prosecution and defense and the microbiology students played the role of expert witnesses and consultants. To be successful, students had to build an interdisciplinary team, outline their side's case, and learn scientific and legal principles. This paper evaluates the impact of this experience on student learning using a mixed-methods approach. Students completed a self-reported knowledge survey and participated in a focus group debriefing session. Challenging the influential view that the chapter on biology in the first volume of The Second Sex is exposing scientific myths in severe prose, in the view of this paper, the chapter is as much about scientific facts as it is an intriguingly open-ended dialogue between phenomenology and science. Beauvoir's consuming epistemological and scientific preoccupation with the category of biology is analysed in a bid to advance a new, naturalist-feminist conception of Beauvoir's theory of natural history. The analysis unravels the theoretical edifice, with its tensions between Beauvoir's selective but brilliant appropriation of recent discoveries in evolutionary biology and genetics and certain deliberate rejections and omissions of Darwinian evolutionary thinking. Contrary to Beauvoir's intentions, she ends up conflating the term biology with, in particular, reproductive physiology, and perpetuating the ill-fated division between body and psyche. In contributing to a reformulation of an empirically grounded approach to the embodied mind and situated body, this paper debates some promising insights from contemporary neuroscience and primatology. These insights are critical to theory development, based on a non-anthropocentric stance and non-dualistic understanding of the mind-brain continuum and the body as a situation. The land snail taxon Helix straminea Briganti, 1825 has been reintroduced as a valid species in 2014. We provide here a comprehensive account of its taxonomy, distribution, anatomy, phylogeny and karyology in Italy. An overview of the historical views on the validity of the species is presented and faunistic data are reviewed and implemented with new records from Campania and Basilicata. A lectotype is fixed for H. straminea from the syntypes stored in the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle of Genève, as well as for three other taxa (Helix straminiformis Bourguignat, 1876, Helix yleobia Bourguignat, 1883 and Helix straminea ssp. elongata Bourguignat, 1860). Genital system, radula and karyotype are described for the first time. Molecular analysis of two mitochondrial genes combining GenBank data and the new sequences presented in this paper showed no differentiation between the northern and southern Italian populations. Samba dance is a factional part of sports dance. It forms a sports dance system with modern dance. According to the method of sports biomechanics experiment, the dynamic parameters and changing rules of fork foot pressure dynamic distribution characteristics are summarised, which can provide theoretical reference for further study of the basic law of samba dance. From the point of view of sports biomechanics, this paper analyses the rotation of athletes, and combines the knowledge of biomechanics with the rotation characteristics of samba dance. Studies have shown that in the comparison of general parameters, the different indicators of the foot pressure have a certain regularity in different action stages. There were no significant differences between the test group and the control group in terms of walking speed, relative speed, step size, relative step size, foot contact area time, and duration. The demand and high market price for sea cucumber has led to the collapse of wild stocks for many traditional species in Asia and the Indo-Pacific. New species have therefore been introduced to the markets over recent decades, including Cucumaria frondosa. A fishery for C. frondosa emerged in the USA in the 1980s and quickly developed in Iceland, Canada and Russia. Commercial products include frozen and dry body wall (beche-de-mer), frozen muscle bands, dry aquapharyngeal bulb (flower), along with various pharmaceutical and nutraceutical extracts. This species is also a candidate for aquaculture due to its high marketability for food and bioactive products. Despite its naturally high abundance, C. frondosa is a temperate-polar slow-growing species with annual spawning; therefore, a precautionary approach must be taken to develop best practices for management of this resource. The present contribution reviews the biology, ecology, biochemical properties, harvesting and trade, and the potential aquaculture of C. frondosa. This comprehensive synthesis, including 10 theses, 197 scientific papers and 47 reports, aims to provide a framework for future research by highlighting areas of concern for academic studies, fishery management, and aquaculture of cold-water sea cucumber species. The importance of promoting research ethics in higher education has been widely recognized but poorly examined, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This paper reports the findings of a systematic investigation of students' knowledge of, experience with, and attitudes to research integrity among bachelor, masters-, and doctoral-level students in the Faculty of Biology at the University of Belgrade. The study was conducted as a self-administered anonymous online survey, consisting of open-ended, multiple-choice, and type-scale questions used to assess rates of knowledge and awareness of research integrity. The overall response rate was 23.4%. While biology students at all levels of the study had a high rate of knowledge about research misconduct, 4.29% admitted plagiarism, 3.28% fabrication of data, 2.78% falsification, and 1.78% presentation of the results or data in a misleading way. The level of the study among students in the Faculty of Biology was not associated with rates of knowledge and awareness on research integrity. Prior ethics training and students' research experience were associated with increased knowledge on research misconduct, faculty policies that regulate it, and attitudes and perceptions of important research integrity issues. Over the past decade, the field of teacher professional learning has coalesced around core characteristics of high quality professional development experiences (e.g. Borko, Jacobs, & Koellner, 2010. Many countries have found these advances of great interest because of a desire to build teacher capacity in science education and across the full curriculum. This paper continues this progress by examining the role and impact of an online professional development community within the top-down, large-scale curriculum and assessment revision of Advanced Placement (AP) Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This paper is part of a five-year, longitudinal, U.S. National Science Foundation-funded project to study the relative effectiveness of various types of professional development in enabling teachers to adapt to the revised AP course goals and exams. Of the many forms of professional development our research has examined, preliminary analyses indicated that participation in the College Board's online AP Teacher Community (APTC) - where teachers can discuss teaching strategies, share resources, and connect with each other - had positive, direct, and statistically significant association with teacher self-reported shifts in practice and with gains in student AP scores (Fishman et al., 2014). This study explored how usage of the online APTC might be useful to teachers and examined a more robust estimate of these effects. Findings from the experience of AP teachers may be valuable in supporting other large-scale curriculum changes, such as the U.S. Next Generation Science Standards or Common Core Standards, as well as parallel curricular shifts in other countries. Recent scholarship has shown Nietzsche to offer an original and insightful moral psychology centering on a motivational feature he calls ‘will to power.’ In many places, though, Nietzsche presents will to power differently, as the ‘essence of life,’ an account of ‘organic function,’ even offering it as a correction to physiologists. This paper clarifies the scope and purpose of will to power by identifying the historical physiological view at which Nietzsche directs his criticisms and by identifying his purpose in doing so. Nietzsche’s criticism, it is argued, is a widespread and (contra many interpreters) pre-Darwinian description of the basic dispositions of organisms and their internal processes. The purpose of this criticism is to undermine the efforts of Herbert Spencer and Arthur Schopenhauer to derive moral-psychological insights from that description. The paper concludes that Nietzsche’s proposal to conceive of ‘organic function’ in terms of will to power is of little import for his moral psychology besides clearing away competing views. Ophioderma appressum is a common and abundant ophiuroid species in tropical reef communities. Nevertheless, few studies analyse and describe its biology. In this paper, we evaluate and describe the diet of this species collected at Seixas reefs, João Pessoa, Brazil. Monthly diurnal samples were obtained between September 2018 and July 2019. In total, 143 individuals were analysed. The recorded diet was variable and consisted of 24 taxa and two additional items. Most material represented unidentifiable and/or digested remains, foraminiferans, crustacean fragments, and sediment particles, indicating omnivory. The number of individuals with stomach contents varied along the year (from two to 13 specimens per month). There was also significant temporal variation in the composition of the stomach contents. The months September 2018, May 2019 and June 2019 had the highest variety of items during the study. Our results suggest generalist and opportunistic feeding behaviour and highlight the role of O. appressum as an active predator on prey of diverse taxa and body size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
