In recent years, the integration of digital technologies has grown rapidly in the field of thermal comfort and energy efficiency for buildings. The concept of a digital twin, incorporating multiple digital technologies, has gained increasing attention. The literature lacks a review of the digital twin concept in thermal comfort and energy consumption for existing buildings. This paper conducts a review of the current state-of-the-art in digital twin (DT) technology for thermal comfort/ energy consumption in buildings. The review employs a scientometric approach and examines various technologies used in creating DTs and a systematic analysis of the methods, technologies, algorithms, and approaches used in digital twin experiments. The results show a growing number of studies in this area, with a focus on thermal comfort monitoring, visualization, tracking, energy management, prediction, and optimization for existing buildings. Furthermore, the prediction of energy consumption using algorithms such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Artificial Intelligence (AI), deep neural networks, and YOLOv4 have been used in buildings. However, the wider adoption of a DT that can facilitate occupants, and thermal sensations, enhance human-centered solutions, and improve energy prediction levels are necessary. There is a need for further international collaboration to expand the studies on digital twins for thermal comfort and energy efficiency. The review highlights the limitations and areas of improvement, such as the limited adoption of sensors for environmental measures, the need for more focus on the subjective perception of occupants, and the need for more comparative studies of algorithms for predicting energy consumption. Further studies can be conducted in areas such as understanding occupant psychological responses/behaviors to comfort in the digital world. The demand for low-carbon and energy-efficient building designs is urgent, especially considering that building energy consumption constitutes a significant part of global energy usage. Unlike small to medium-sized buildings such as residential and office spaces, large public buildings, like sports facilities, have unique usage patterns and architectural forms, offering more significant potential for energy-saving strategies. This review focuses on sports buildings, selecting 62 high-quality papers published in building science over the past 30 years that investigate low-carbon and energy-efficient research. Summarizing and synthesizing these papers reveals that current studies predominantly concentrate on four main areas: indoor air quality, ventilation, thermal environment, and energy consumption. Notably, many studies emphasize improving indoor thermal comfort and reducing energy consumption in sports buildings through measurements and evaluations of indoor thermal environments, temperature distributions, heat transfer phenomena, and energy consumption analyses. Key outcomes indicate that green technology innovations, such as energy substitution technologies, significantly enhance energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. However, present research emphasizes singular energy-saving approaches, suggesting future directions could integrate comprehensive green technologies, life-cycle assessments, and applications of intelligent technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT). These enhancements aim to provide more effective and sustainable solutions for implementing green, low-carbon energy practices in sports buildings. The Qinghai–Tibet plateau, with an average altitude of over 4000 m, has low annual average temperatures and a high demand for building heating. This region's abundant solar energy resources hold substantial practical significance for improving the indoor heat environment and reducing building energy consumption. This paper investigates the impact of orientation and skylight area ratio on building heat load and indoor temperature, using both actual measurement and simulation methods, with a case study of the comprehensive building at Beiluhe Observation and Research Station of Frozen Soil Engineering and Environment (Beiluhe Station), located in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau region. Initially, a model was established using the EnergyPlus 9.4 software, with orientation variables set from east to west in 15° increments, to simulate the variations in building heat load resulting from orientation changes; simulations were then conducted for three different skylight area ratios under the optimal orientation to evaluate their influence on heat load and indoor temperature. The results show that for the architectural style examined in this paper, the optimal building orientation within the region is 30° south by east, with the optimal orientation range spanning from 45° south by east to due south. Heating load is negatively correlated with the skylight area ratio, and beyond a certain threshold, the rate of decrease in heat load diminishes or even stabilizes. Climate change has emerged as a global focal point, notably affecting vulnerable countries like Pakistan. The country faces heightened risk, prompting concern among many due to its susceptibility to climate-related hazards. An imperative challenge arising from this phenomenon is the necessary shift towards sustainable energy, particularly concerning energy consumption within the building sector. Buildings significantly contribute to daily energy usage and subsequent GHG emissions. In Pakistan, transitioning to energy-efficient building stock holds pivotal importance in mitigating climate change impacts. This hinges on establishing a robust institutional framework and regulatory structure centered around energy efficiency. While Pakistan possesses policies and national guidelines advocating for energy-efficient buildings, their practical enforcement and application remain inadequate. The inception of the Building Energy Code of Pakistan in 1990, based on ASHRAE 90.1 standards, marked a step forward. However, obstacles rooted in institutional weakness and limited capacity building have impeded its effective adoption and adherence. Although the Energy Provisions of 2011 introduced modifications, their scope remained confined mainly to commercial structures. This paper conducts an extensive assessment of Pakistan's existing institutional and regulatory framework for building energy efficiency and transition. Drawing on literature insights and stakeholder perspectives, an in-depth understanding of prevailing policies and institutions uncovers underlying reasons for noncompliance and limited implementation. Additionally, input was gathered from stakeholders through interviews, aiming to identify barriers obstructing the reinforcement of building energy efficiency measures in Pakistan. Discourse and narrative analysis, informed by literature and stakeholder interviews, revealed the significance of awareness, participation, coordination, capacity building, technical expertise, finance, and resources as key factors contributing to deficient compliance and implementation of existing codes and policy guidelines. A critical issue in intelligent building control is detecting energy consumption anomalies based on intelligent device status data. The building field is plagued by energy consumption anomalies caused by a number of factors, many of which are associated with one another in apparent temporal relationships. For the detection of abnormalities, most traditional detection methods rely solely on a single variable of energy consumption data and its time series changes. Therefore, they are unable to examine the correlation between the multiple characteristic factors that affect energy consumption anomalies and their relationship in time. The outcomes of anomaly detection are one-sided. To address the above problems, this paper proposes an anomaly detection method based on multivariate time series. Firstly, in order to extract the correlation between different feature variables affecting energy consumption, this paper introduces a graph convolutional network to build an anomaly detection framework. Secondly, as different feature variables have different influences on each other, the framework is enhanced by a graph attention mechanism so that time series features with higher influence on energy consumption are given more attention weights, resulting in better anomaly detection of building energy consumption. Finally, the effectiveness of this paper's method and existing methods for detecting energy consumption anomalies in smart buildings are compared using standard data sets. The purpose of this study is to provide a holistic review of two decades of research advancement in the indoor environmental quality modelling and indexing field (IEQMI) using bibliometric analysis methods. The explicit objectives of the present study are: (1) identifying researchers, institutions, countries (territories), and journals with the most influence in the IEQMI topic; (2) investigating the hot topics in the IEQMI field; and (3) thematically analysing the keyword evolution in the IEQMI field. A scientometric review was conducted using the bibliometric data of 456 IEQMI research articles published in the past two decades. VOSviewer software was employed for bibliometric analysis, and the SciMAT tool was used to investigate the keywords' thematic evolution in three sub-periods (2004–2009; 2010–2015; 2016–2021). Results show that there is a continuous increment in the number of published papers in the field of IEQMI, and 60 out of 193 countries in the world have been involved in IEQMI studies. The IEQMI research mainly focuses on: (a) thermal comfort and energy efficiency; (b) occupant satisfaction and comfort; (c) IAQ and health issues; (d) methods and procedures. This field has undergone significant evolution. While 'indoor environmental quality was initially the only theme in the first period', 'occupant satisfaction', 'buildings', 'impact', 'building information modelling', and 'health' were added as the main thematic areas in the second period; 'occupant behaviour' and 'energy' were novel themes in IEQMI studies receiving much attention in the third period. With the ever-increasing population and historic highest energy demand, the energy efficiency of buildings is becoming crucial. Architectural firms are moving from traditional Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to BIM. However, nearly 40% of the energy consumption is due to buildings. Therefore, there is a need to integrate BIM with Building Energy Modeling (BEM), which presents an innovative opportunity to demonstrate the potential of BIM to minimize energy consumption by integrating building information software with data from existing energy-efficient building automation systems (EBAS). BEM is a form of computational analysis that can be used in conjunction with BIM or Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) systems. In this paper, an attempt has been made to explore the existing literature on BIM and BEM and identify the effect of the integration of BEM in BIM in the design phase of the project. A recent survey from the last ten years (2012 to 2023) was carried out on Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Scopus databases. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied, and papers were scrutinized. From the results, it can be observed that the convergence of BIM and BEM is found to be useful in practical applications; however, projects with short life cycles might not be suitable for this solution. Challenges exist in the interoperability tools which have restrictions on data exchange. Binary translation is found to be the most suitable candidate for data exchange. The analysis further showed that the most used program for integrating BIM/BEM is Green Building Studio developed by Autodesk to improve construction and operational efficiencies. The pursuit of climate neutrality requires global systemic actions involving the use of solutions aimed at reducing emissions. Changes must be introduced in all sectors affecting climate change, namely power engineering and district heating, construction, transport, and industry, as well as agriculture and forestry. Analyzing the structure of final energy consumption in the EU by sector, it can be stated that households account for 27% of the total energy consumption. Comprehensive actions are needed to increase the energy efficiency of buildings. The aim of this paper was to indicate aspects of improving energy efficiency in buildings and their equipment, taking into account the striving for climate neutrality. Analyzed possibilities and conditions of using various solutions of energy-efficient systems aimed at increasing energy resilience and security and preventing environmental degradation. Particular attention was paid to construction and material solutions, as well as installation solutions, which increased the accumulation and energy efficiency of the building. These activities are closely related to the conditions and dynamics of the heat exchange process in the applied solutions and are also related to the factors influencing thermal comfort and energy consumption in buildings. Due to the growing popularity of modern information technologies and artificial intelligence in energy management in recent years, this article reviews the latest research in this area. One of the directions of future research indicated by scientists is autonomous building control in real time, adapting to the momentary needs of users. The analysis of the possibilities of using modern energy efficiency solutions in buildings conducted in this work may be useful for optimizing heat and energy management models and models of society's consumption as an element of energy transformation towards climate neutrality and counteracting the deepening of energy poverty. Educational buildings have a large share and impact on urban development. While research shows a significant portion of non-industrial energy consumption in these buildings, obtaining optimal thermal comfort in educational buildings remains one of the main concerns in achieving the grounds to promote students' best performance and efficiency. Extensive research has been done in this field, however, this research presents a new approach to the diverse use of nanotechnology techniques which improve its properties and components in the buildings, aiming to reduce energy consumption and increase thermal comfort. In this paper, thermal comfort and energy consumption are evaluated in a 12-class elementary school located in Shiraz City. Aeropan and nano-Phase change materials (nano-PCMs) is used in the window glass and walls of the studied case. This evaluation presents the simulation and experimental analysis of thermal comfort (PMV) and energy consumption of three classroom alignments in the school building including the Linear-shape (LS), the Integrated Linear-shape (ILS), and the U-shaped (US) alignment. The simulation was performed using EnergyPlus 9.6 software, while the experimental data was collected using TESTO 425 device. The result of this research shows that after applying nano-PCM and Aeropan techniques in window glass and walls, the US alignment has the highest reduction in energy consumption (monthly average of 11.80%) compared to LS and ILS alignments. This alignment includes an energy consumption reduction of 12.03% in the coldest, and, 11.66% in the hottest day of the year in addition to increasing the monthly average thermal comfort of school by the use of nanomaterials. The energy consumption of residential buildings plays a crucial role in overall energy consumption and environmental sustainability. This paper aims to conduct an energy analysis of a residential house located in China, with a focus on comparing the accuracy of the model, identifying areas for improvement, and proposing energy-efficient solutions. Four sets of temperature sensors were placed to monitor the ambient temperature at which the building is located and the indoor temperature of the residential building during a heating season. The energy consumption of keeping the building running at a low temperature was recorded and compared with the simulation results to verify the accuracy of the model. The monitoring results give the weekly average temperature of each zone on each floor, and the door and window positions, room layouts, and orientations are discussed to analyze the thermal response of the building. In addition, the effect of the heat transfer coefficient of the exterior walls, the heat transfer coefficient of the roof, and the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of the exterior windows on the heating energy consumption of the building are further analyzed through simulations. The results show that, after adding a certain thickness of insulation to the exterior walls and roofs of a building, increasing the thickness of the insulation layer produces little extra energy saving. The growth of electric vehicles (EVs) and their integration into existing and future buildings bring new considerations for energy efficiency (EE) and balance when combined with renewable energy. However, for buildings with an energy efficiency label, such as Near Zero Energy Building (NZEB) or Positive Energy Building (PEB), the introduction of EVs may result in the declassification of the EE label due to the additional energy required for the charging infrastructure. This underscores the increasing relevance of demand-side management techniques to effectively manage and utilize energy consumption and generation in buildings. This paper evaluates the influence of electric vehicle (EV) charging on NZEB/PEB-labeled buildings of the Brazilian Building Labeling Program (PBE Edifica). Utilizing on-site surveys, computational modeling, and thermos-energetic analysis with software tools such as OpenStudio v. 1.1.0 and EnergyPlus v. 9.4.0, an energy classification was conducted in a building in the city of Belem, State of Para, Brazil. Subsequently, power flow simulations employing probabilistic models and Monte Carlo approaches were executed in the OpenDSS software v. 10.0.0.2 to examine the impact of EV integration, both with and without the implementation of demand-side management techniques. Analyses using the labeling methodology demonstrated that the building has EE level C and NZEB self-sufficiency classification. The assessment of the impact of EV integration on the building's total energy consumption in the base (current) scenario was carried out in two scenarios, with (2) and without (1) supply management. Scenario 01 generated a 69.28% increase in energy consumption, reducing the EE level to D and resulting in the loss of the NZEB class. Scenario 02 resulted in a smaller increase in energy consumption of 40.50%, and guaranteed the return of the NZEB class lost in scenario 1, but it was not enough to return the EE level to class C. The results highlight the need for immediate and comprehensive energy management strategies, as the findings show that the two scenarios present a difference of 41.55% in energy consumption. The urban heat island (UHI) effect is one of the largest climate-related issues concerning our cities due to the localized temperature increase in highly urbanized areas. This paper aims to investigate the impact of UHI mitigation techniques in promoting climate resilience, by reducing urban air temperatures and cooling energy consumption in buildings. To this end, four mitigation solutions regarding the building envelope—green roofs, green walls, cool roofs, and cool walls—were investigated for the city of Bari in Southern Italy and compared with the current baseline scenario. Hence, five scenarios were simulated—using the ENVI-met microclimate software—during three representative summer days, and the resulting microclimate changes were assessed. Based on these analyses, new climate files—one for each scenario—were generated and used as input to run energy simulations in EnergyPlus to estimate the building cooling consumption. Coupling the microclimate and the consumption outcomes, the mitigation strategies were evaluated from both an urban and building point of view. The study shows that urban characteristics, mainly geometry and materials, are crucial for the UHI phenomenon. All the applied technologies seem to be effective. However, green walls proved to be more efficient in reducing outdoor temperatures (1 °C reduction in daily temperatures), while cool walls performed better in reducing cooling energy consumption, with an overall saving of 6% compared to the current scenario. A large proportion of building energy consumption in tropical countries like Thailand primarily comes from air conditioning systems used to maintain the comfort level of building occupants. This paper aims to evaluate the performance of an alternative cooling system based on the evaporative principle in terms of thermal characteristics and energy consumption. A simulation model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS version 16.0 and an actual experimental setup at the laboratory level were built to verify the results of the proposed cooling system. Additionally, factors that influence performance, such as components of the building envelope and the building's orientation, are considered. This research aims to demonstrate the impact of building envelope material and building characteristics on the energy usage in air conditioning systems and to propose an energy-efficient cooling system. The results demonstrate that the proposed cooling system can reduce the temperature inside the building. However, the characteristics of the building also affect the energy performance. Thus, the proposed cooling system, in combination with an efficient envelope material, can achieve energy savings of around 35–43%. Currently, the construction and operation of buildings are responsible for 36% of global final energy usage and nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. From the perspective of sustainable development, and taking into account economy and thermal comfort, it is crucial to consider the influence of multi-objective realization on design parameters. In this paper, high-rise residential buildings in the cities of Xi'an and Yulin, which have differences in solar radiation, in the western solar enrichment area of China are taken as the research objects. The four objectives of building energy consumption, thermal comfort, life-cycle cost, and life-cycle carbon emissions are weighed using the SPEA-2 algorithm by adjusting eleven design variables, thereby obtaining the Pareto non-dominated solutions. The TOPSIS method is applied to obtain the suitable parameter combinations under different scenarios. The results show that the differences in climate and solar radiation influence the solution distribution, the range of objective function values, and the values of the design variables in Pareto non-dominated solutions. The obtained optimal scheme for the Xi'an area has an energy-saving rate of 61.7%, a TDHP improvement rate of 20.3%, an LCC of 254.8 CNY/m2, and an LCCO2 of 72.3 kgCO2/m2. The corresponding values in the Yulin area are 69.7%, 19.4%, 230.2 CNY/m2, and 0 kgCO2/m2. This reflects the potential of solar energy utilization to reduce buildings' energy consumption and carbon emissions. Among the most significant solutions suggested for estimating energy consumption and cooling load, one can refer to enhancing energy efficiency in non-residential and residential buildings. A structure's characteristics must be considered when estimating how much heating and cooling is required. To design and develop energy-efficient buildings, it can be helpful to research the characteristics of connected structures, such as the kinds of cooling and heating systems needed to ensure sui interior air quality. As an important part of energy consumption and demand of buildings, the assessment of cooling load conditions from the envelope of large buildings has not been comprehensively understood yet. In the present paper, a new conceptual system has been developed to anticipate cooling load in the sector of residential buildings. Also, the paper briefly describes the major models of the developed system to maintain continuity and concentrate on the prediction model of the cooling load. To predict cooling load, authors have modelled two methods of artificial neural network (ANN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in conjunction with teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO). This article aims to illustrate how artificial intelligence (AI) approaches play an essential role in addressing the mentioned necessity and help estimate the optimal design parameters for various stations. The value of the multiple determination coefficient is also determined. The values of the training R² (coefficient of multiple determination) are 0.96446 and 0.97585 for TLBO-MLP and TLBO-ANFIS in the training stage and 0.95855 and 0.9721 in the testing stage, respectively, with an unknown dataset which is acceptable. The training RMSE values for TLBO-MLP and TLBO-ANFIS are 0.0685 and 0.11176 for training and 0.07074 and 0.12035 for testing, respectively, for the unknown dataset, which is acceptable. The lowest RMSE value and the higher R² value indicate the favourable accuracy of the TLBO-MLP technique. The sun's total radiation alone exceeds the world population's entire energy consumption by 7.500 times and ignites secondary renewable energy sources. The end energy consumption buildings use for heating amounts to 28% of Germany's total energy consumption. With the ongoing trend of digitalization and the transition of the German energy supply away from fossil fuels and the consequent political dependency, electric heat pumps and photovoltaic (PV) systems have become increasingly important to the discussion. This has led to an increasing demand for smart control strategies, especially for inert systems such as thermally activated building systems (TABS). This paper presents and analyses a weather predictive control (WPC) strategy using a validated thermodynamic simulation model. The literature review of this paper outlines that the current common control strategies are data intense and complex in their implementation into the built environment. The simple approach of the WPC uses future ambient temperature and solar radiation to optimize the control of the heating, cooling, ventilation, and sun protection system. The thermal comfort and energy demand evaluate the concept. We show that with a WPC for TABS, thermal comfort can improve without increasing the energy demand for the office building in the moderate climate of Munich. Furthermore, this paper concludes that the WPC works more effectively with more thermal mass. In an era of increasing energy demands and environmental concerns, optimizing energy consumption within buildings is crucial. Despite the vast improvements in HVAC and lighting systems, plug loads remain an under-studied area for enhancing building energy efficiency. This paper studies smart plug active operating mode detection, plug-level load forecasting, and plug scheduling methodologies. This research leverages a unique dataset from the University of California, San Diego, consisting of readings from over 150 smart plugs in several office buildings for more than a year, notably during the post-Covid era. This dataset is made publicly available. A comprehensive literature review on plug, i.e. , appliances operating mode detection is presented. Novel unsupervised learning approaches are applied to identify plug operating modes. A pipeline integrating the detected modes with forecasting and scheduling is developed, aiming at building energy consumption reduction. Short-term load forecasting plays a crucial role in managing the energy consumption of buildings in cities. Accurate forecasting enables residents to reduce energy waste and facilitates timely decision-making for power companies' energy management. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid forecasting model designed to predict load series in multiple households. Our proposed method integrates multivariate variational mode decomposition (MVMD), the whale optimization algorithm (WOA), and a temporal fusion transformer (TFT) to perform one-step forecasts. MVMD is utilized to decompose the load series into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), extracting characteristics at distinct scales. We use sample entropy to determine the appropriate number of decomposition levels and the penalty factor of MVMD. The WOA is utilized to optimize the hyperparameters of MVMD-TFT to enhance its overall performance. We generate two distinct cases originating from BCHydro. Enhancing energy efficiency within the building sector is imperative to curbing energy losses, given that this sector alone contributes to over 34% of global energy consumption. Employing a building management system, along with its regular updates, presents a strategic avenue to decrease energy usage, enhance building energy efficiency, and more. Tailored control strategies, aligned with the unique characteristics and usage patterns of each building, are essential for achieving energy savings. This article presents an evaluation of HVAC system efficiency in office buildings, utilizing a data-driven approach coupled with simulations conducted in building performance simulation software. The research explores the control strategy of an office building equipped with a constant air volume HVAC system, featuring a regularly controlled air handling unit. The objective is to boost energy efficiency while striking a balance between occupant comfort and energy consumption. The findings indicate that by analyzing measured data and adjusting the configurable parameters, the energy consumption of buildings can be significantly reduced. With the trend of achieving both energy efficiency in buildings and occupants' comfort, gamification strategies have started to be developed and applied as incentive mechanisms to increase social interaction and facilitate human energy behavior transformation. In this article, 306 published papers are reviewed, and 21 studies are identified to determine the challenges and potential for the development of gamification strategies to improve building energy efficiency. Specifically, this work reviews the implementation techniques of gamification and methods to assess the impact of gamification mechanisms on human energy behavior changes. This analysis demonstrates that, firstly, the choice of an optimal gamification implementation method should be inherently attuned to the distinct characteristics of the building type and its occupants. Secondly, it is imperative to strike a judicious balance between extrinsic and intrinsic motivations, in which customization of gamification design elements are based on users' unique personality traits and preferences, to properly tailor gamification mechanisms. Thirdly, integrating a fusion of quantification of energy savings and qualitative interpretation of user behaviors to improve the energy efficiency in buildings is essential for a more holistic understanding of the impact of gamification on users' energy-related behavior change. Energy consumption in buildings is gradually increasing and accounts for around forty percent of the total energy consumption. Forecasting the heating and cooling loads of a building during the initial phase of the design process in order to identify optimal solutions among various designs is of utmost importance. This is also true during the operation phase of the structure after it has been completed in order to ensure that energy efficiency is maintained. The aim of this paper is to create and develop a Multilayer Perceptron Regressor (MLPRegressor) model for the purpose of forecasting the heating and cooling loads of a building. The proposed model is based on automated hyperparameter optimization using Waterwheel Plant Algorithm The model was based on a dataset that described the energy performance of the structure. There are a number of important characteristics that are considered to be input variables. These include relative compactness, roof area, overall height, surface area, glazing area, wall area, glazing area distribution of a structure, and orientation. On the other hand, the variables that are considered to be output variables are the heating and cooling loads of the building. A total of 768 residential buildings were included in the dataset that was utilized for training purposes. Following the training and regression of the model, the most significant parameters that influence heating load and cooling load have been identified, and the WWPA- MLPRegressor performed well in terms of different metrices variables and fitted time. Assessing building energy consumption is of paramount significance in sustainability and energy efficiency (EE) studies. The development of an accurate EE prediction model is pivotal for optimizing energy resources and facilitating effective building planning. Traditional physical modeling approaches are encumbered by high complexity and protracted modeling cycles. In this paper, we introduce a novel evolutionary dendritic neural regression (EDNR) model tailored to forecasting residential building EE. Acknowledging the vast landscape and complexity of the EDNR weight space, coupled with the inherent susceptibility of traditional optimization algorithms to local optima, we propose a complex network-guided strategy-based differential evolution algorithm for training the EDNR model. This strategy adeptly strikes a balance between exploration and exploitation during the search process, significantly enhancing the predictive and generalization capacities of EDNR. To our knowledge, this study represents the inaugural application of dendritic neural regression in real-world prediction scenarios. Extensive experimental findings demonstrate the efficacy of EDNR in accurately predicting building EE with commendable performance. Ensuring optimal building performance is vital for enhancing student activity comfort and fostering energy-saving initiatives toward low-carbon objectives. This paper focuses on university student centers in China, aiming to diminish building energy consumption while enhancing indoor thermal comfort. Parametric modeling of typical cases is executed using the Grasshopper 1.0.0007 software package, and the simulation of building energy consumption and indoor thermal comfort relies on the Ladybug and Honeybee plug-in. Employing a multi-objective optimization design method and the Octopus multi-objective optimization algorithm, this study integrates numerical simulations and on-site surveys to analyze how factors like building form, orientation, envelope structure, and others impact the indoor and outdoor environment. A comprehensive optimization design approach is implemented for the building's exterior components, including the walls, windows, roof, and shading system. After conducting a comparative analysis of the annual comprehensive energy consumption and indoor thermal comfort before and after the optimization plan, it is determined that implementing these measures reduces the annual comprehensive energy consumption of the building under study by 58.8% and extends the duration of indoor thermal comfort by 53.0%. For the building energy consumption models with complex scale sensitivity, it is difficult to achieve ideal prediction effect with single-granularity prediction model. Therefore, this paper proposed a multigranularity MgHa-LSTM model based on convolutional recurrent neural network, including a multigranularity feature extraction module and a long-term dependency capture module. Multigranularity feature extraction included granularity segmentation, feedback mechanism, and parallel convolutional modules, which can capture short-term scale sensitivity dependencies. Long-term dependency capture consists of a hybrid attention mechanism and long-short term memory layers, which are able to capture long-term dependencies. For building energy consumption patterns with different scale sensitivity, MgHa-LSTM, MLP, CNN, LSTM, and MsC-LSTM models were constructed on the IHEPC building energy consumption dataset used in this paper for comparative experiments. The experimental results showed that on the IHEPC dataset, the MSE of the building energy consumption prediction model is 0.2821 based on the MgHa-LSTM model proposed in this paper, which is equivalent to 93.72% of the MsC-LSTM model with the smallest MSE among other deep learning prediction models. This paper uses SketchUp and OpenStudio to design and optimize the multiperformance parameters of the near-zero energy consumption residential building scheme stage. By establishing a basic model, the performance parameters such as insulation thickness, typical outer window, window-to-wall ratio, and their contribution rates within the threshold range are optimized for energy conservation; simulate the energy consumption of the determined multiperformance parameter combination scheme, select the most energy-saving scheme, and calculate its energy-saving contribution rate; calculate the life cycle cost of the above schemes, select the scheme with the lowest cost, and analyze its economic benefits; select energy-saving cost and economic benefit, and calculate energy-saving contribution rate and economic benefit. However, when the mass ratio of the phase change energy storage material contained in the wall is greater than 15%, the phenomenon of wetting and leakage will occur, which will cause greater losses when added to the wall. Therefore, it is not suitable for application and building walls. Regardless of leakage, wetting, or economic considerations, the mass ratio of phase change material of 10% is the most suitable for use in walls. Non-residential buildings are responsible for more than a third of global energy consumption. Estimating building energy consumption is the first step towards identifying inefficiencies and optimizing energy management policies. This paper presents a study of Deep Learning techniques for time series analysis applied to building energy prediction with real environments. We collected multisource sensor data from an actual office building under normal operating conditions, pre-processed them, and performed a comprehensive evaluation of the accuracy of feed-forward and recurrent neural networks to predict energy consumption. The results show that memory-based architectures (LSTMs) perform better than stateless ones (MLPs) even without data aggregation (CNNs), although the lack of ample usable data in this type of problem avoids making the most of recent techniques such as sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq). Building energy baseline models, particularly machine learning-based models, are a core aspect in the evaluation of building energy performance to identify inefficient energy consumption behavior. In smart city design, energy planners and decision makers require comprehensive information on energy consumption across diverse building types as well as comparisons between different types of buildings. However, there is no comprehensive study of baseline modeling across the main building types to help identify factors that influence the performance of different machine learning algorithms for baseline modeling. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to review and analyze energy consumption behavior and evaluate the prediction performance and interpretability of machine learning-based baseline modeling techniques across major building types. The results have shown that the Extreme Gradient Boosting Machine (XGBoost) model is the most accurate baseline modeling method for all building types. Time-related factors, especially the week of the year and the day of the week, have the most impact on energy consumption across all building types. In the context of an insulated area with a subtropical climate, such as La Réunion island, it is crucial to reduce the energy consumption of buildings and develop local renewable energy sources to achieve energy autonomy. Direct current (DC) nanogrids could facilitate this by reducing the energy conversion steps, especially for solar energy. This article presents the deployment and efficiency evaluation of a 48 VDC low-voltage direct current (LVDC) nanogrid, from conception to real-world installation within a company. The nanogrid consists of a photovoltaic power plant, a lithium–iron–phosphate (LFP) battery, and DC end-use equipment, such as LED lighting and DC fans, for two individual offices. For identical test conditions, which are at an equivalent cabling distance and with the same final power demand, the total power consumed by the installation is measured for several stages from 50 to 400 W, according to a 100% DC configuration or a conventional DC/AC/DC PV configuration incorporating an inverter and AC/DC converter. The methodology used enables a critical view to be taken of the installation, assessing both its efficiency and its limitations. Energy savings of between 23% and 40% are measured in DC for a power limit identified at 150 W for a distance of 25 m. These results show that it is possible to supply 48 VDC in an innovative way to terminal equipment consuming no more than 100 W, such as lighting and air fans, using the IEEE 802.3 bt power over ethernet (PoE) protocol, while at the same time saving energy. The city of Amsterdam has ambitious goals to achieve a 95% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 and to phase out natural gas by 2040. Disconnecting the building stock from natural gas requires well-ventilated and well-insulated buildings and a switch to renewable energy sources, making optimal use of heat pumps and sustainable heating solutions available locally. Most buildings in the historical city centre are protected and often insufficiently insulated, leading to increased energy use and a poor thermal environment. Standard retrofitting interventions may be restricted, requiring new approaches to balancing the need for energy efficiency and the preservation of heritage significance. With the case of the Amsterdam City Centre, the goal of this research is to present a parametric modelling approach for energy retrofitting heritage buildings and to identify minimum requirements for preparing the residential stock to lower temperature heat (LTH). Using parametric design and bottom-up energy modelling, the research estimates that a 69.1% of natural gas reduction could be achieved when upgrading the buildings to lower temperature (LT). Massive data can be collected from meters to analyze the energy use behavior and detect the operation problems of buildings. However, missing and abnormal data often occur for the raw data. Effective data filling and smoothing methods are required to improve data quality before conducting the analysis. This paper introduces a data filling method based on K-SVD. The complete dictionary is trained and then utilized to reconstruct incomplete samples to fill the missing or abnormal data. The impacts of the dictionary size, the data missing continuity, and the sample size on the performance of the proposed method are studied. The results show that a smaller dictionary size is recommended considering the computational complexity and accuracy. The K-SVD method outperforms traditional methods, showing a reduction in the MAPE and CVRMSE by 3.8–5.4% and 6.7–87.8%. The proposed K-SVD filling method performs better for non-consecutive missing data, with an improvement in the MAPE and CVRMSE by 0.1–4% and 5.1–6.7%. Smaller training samples are recommended. Control strategies for variable-air-volume (VAV) air conditioning significantly affect both the air quality within buildings and the consumption of building energy. Current control techniques effectively regulate room temperature using feedback on temperature discrepancies, yet they also elevate the wear on terminal devices and boost the energy usage of the supply fan. In this paper, the hysteresis and inertia parameters of end air valves and supply fans under two seasonal conditions are derived from experimental data. Aiming at the problems of frequent switching of the end air valve, long total switching stroke, and high energy consumption of the air supply fan, a fuzzy PI regulation method is proposed based on the original pressure-independent series PI regulation, which effectively solves the above problems. Initially, data on how room temperature reacts to changes in air supply fan speed and the position of end air valves during winter and summer were gathered. Following model identification, parameters for various seasonal conditions were determined. Secondly, the roles of different components in the variable-air-volume regulation process were investigated. Investigations revealed that within pressure-independent variable-air-volume control, the supply fan and end air valve emerged as the primary subjects of the study. A double-closed-loop control with the speed control of the supply fan as the outer loop and the opening control of the end air valve as the inner loop was adopted. Compared with the traditional serial PI regulation, the room temperature error of this method was increased, but it reduced the total stroke of the valve by more than 43%, which greatly reduced the valve's loss and noise and saved more than 2.7% of the energy consumption of the air supply fan. Reducing heat losses through the building envelope is one of the most important aspects to be met if the targets set by the European Union are to be achieved. In order to obtain a more realistic energy demand, dynamic heat transfer simulations are used to calculate the energy consumption of buildings, since steady-state calculations do not take into account the thermal mass in buildings. These dynamic simulations employ methods based on analytical models since numerical models are unsuitable for longer time periods. The analytical models used herein fall into the category of conduction transfer functions (CTFs). Two methods for computing CTFs that are addressed in this research are the Laplace method and the State-Space method. The objective of this paper is to verify the efficiency of the Laplace and State-Space methods for calculating the energy demand of a building in the case of heavyweight building elements and shorter sampling times, and to provide a means for improving the algorithms used by these methods. The Laplace and State-Space method algorithms were implemented in Mathematica, and the results were compared to EnergyPlus and TRNSYS, which use similar algorithms to calculate energy demand. It was shown in this paper that for the heavyweight wall element and a time step of 0.25 h, the difference between the total energy transferred through the inner surface was about 31% for EnergyPlus and 78% for TRNSYS compared to the reference solution. For the lightweight wall element, the results were stable for the time step of 0.25 h, but for the time step of 0.1 h, the differences were 45.64% and 303% between EnergyPlus, TRNSYS and the reference solution, respectively, compared to the State-Space and Laplace methods for which the maximum difference was 12.03% with a time step of 0.1 h. While dynamic heat transfer simulations are better than calculations based on steady-state boundary conditions, they also have their limitations and could lead to unsatisfactory results for short sampling times and if not applied properly. Buildings consume large amounts of energy resources and emit considerable amounts of greenhouse gases, especially existing buildings that do not meet energy standards. Building retrofitting is considered one of the most promising and significant solutions to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. However, finding suitable energy efficiency measures for existing buildings is extremely difficult due to the existence of thousands of retrofit measures and the need to meet various objectives. In this paper, a multi-stage decision framework, including a multi-objective optimization model, and a ranking method are proposed to help decision-makers select the optimal energy efficiency measures. The multi-objective optimization model considers the economic and environmental objectives, expressed as the retrofit cost and energy consumption, respectively. The entropy weight ideal point ranking method, an evaluation and ranking method that combines the entropy weight method and ideal point method, is adopted to sort the Pareto front and make a final decision. Then, the proposed decision framework was implemented for the retrofit planning of an educational building in Chongqing, China. The results show that decision-makers can quickly identify near-optimal energy efficiency measures through multi-objective optimization and can select suitable energy efficiency measures using the ranking method. Moreover, energy consumption can be reduced by building retrofitting. The energy consumption of the case building was 64.20 kWh/m2 before retrofitting, and the value can be reduced by 6.79% through retrofitting. Furthermore, the reduction in building energy consumption was significantly improved by applying the decision framework. The highest value of energy consumption was 59.84 kWh/m2, while the lowest value was 27.11 kWh/m2 when implementing the multi-stage decision framework. In order to improve the short-term energy consumption control effect of green buildings and shorten the control time, this paper proposes a short-term energy consumption control method of green buildings based on density peak optimization. Firstly, the research status of green building energy consumption control is analyzed, and the short-term energy consumption data information of green building is obtained. Secondly, the definition of peak density algorithm is given, the short-term energy consumption control model of green building is constructed, and the initial cluster center of the short-term energy consumption model of green building is selected to calculate the probability density of the short-term energy consumption control model of green building. Finally, the adaptive genetic algorithm is used to control the short-term energy consumption of green buildings. The experimental results show that the research method can achieve good prediction accuracy in each season, and the short-term energy consumption control time of green buildings is only 3.2 seconds, indicating that the research method can effectively improve energy consumption control efficiency, shorten the short-term energy consumption control time of green buildings, and verify the superiority of the research method. Since the reduction of energy consumption and efficient energy use, particularly in the building stock, is the priority for contemporary societies, the ways of how to improve the existing buildings should be examined. Flat roofs, as a part of the existing building thermal envelope, are recognized as a field of intervention for improving efficient energy use for space cooling and heating. The topic of the paper is to determine to what extent different improved roof structures affect energy consumption intended to achieve thermal comfort. Comparative analysis of four roof structures was conducted for the building of Healthcare center Niš in Serbia, one improved non-walkable flat roof structure and three green roof systems. Urbancsape extensive green roof system was used in all tested green roof models: non-walkable extensive green roof, walkable extensive green roof, and extensive and intensive green roof systems within walkable terraces. DesignBuilder software was used for energy modelling. The obtained results indicate a slight decrease in energy consumption for building models with green roofs compared to the building model with the improved non-walkable roof structure, along the cooling period, by approximately 1.5%, which is correlated with previous studies in similar conditions. On the other hand, the reduction of energy consumption over the heating period was negligible (less than 1%). Block morphology refers to critical parameters influencing building energy performance on the block scale. However, analysis of the combined effect of block morphological parameters on building energy consumption with real blocks is lacking. In this paper, the aim is to evaluate the combined effect of office block morphology on building energy consumption in the context of the Hot-summer and Cold-winter zone in China. First, a workflow for the energy assessment of office buildings with the coupled block morphology on the block scale was proposed with evaluation tools. Seventy office blocks in Wuhan were taken as examples and then classified based on building layout typology and building height. Afterwards, the morphological parameters and building energy use intensity (EUI) for different blocks were calculated. Then, the combined effect of block morphology on the buildings' energy consumption was evaluated and the model on predicting the building energy consumption of office blocks was proposed. Finally, based on the results, low-energy design strategies were projected for office blocks. The results illustrated that the effect of block morphology on building cooling, heating, and lighting is EUI 28.83%, 28.56%, and 23.23%, respectively. Building shape factor (BSF), floor area ratio (FAR), average building height of block (BH), and average building depth of block (BD) are effective block morphological parameters. The key morphological parameters which combined affect the building energy consumption of office blocks are BSF and FAR; BSF has 1.24 times the effect on building energy consumption than FAR. Domestic water heating accounts for 15% to 27% of the total energy consumption in buildings in Australia. Over the past two decades, the latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) system has been widely investigated as a way to reduce fossil fuel consumption and increase the share of renewable energy in solar water heating. However, the research has concentrated on the geometric optimisation of the LHTES heat exchanger for the past few years, and this might not be sufficient for commercialisation. Moreover, recent review papers mainly discussed the development of a particular heat-transfer improvement technique. This paper presents perspectives on various solar hot water systems using LHTES to shift focus to on-demand performance studies, as well as structure optimisation studies for faster commercialisation. Future challenges are also discussed. Since the topic is an active area of research, this paper focuses on references that showcase the overall performance of LHTES-assisted solar hot water systems and cannot include all published work in the discussion. Insulating glass unit (IGU) degradation has been studied extensively. However, there is limited understanding of how present durability evaluation standards relate to product lifetime. Furthermore, there is debate on how to quantify performance of installed windows over time to better understand degradation processes. More knowledge on these topics is required to link durability evaluation to product lifetime projections based on energy performance. Energy models provide helpful estimations of total annual building energy consumption. However, most models are based on "as installed" performance of envelope components and fail to account for performance degradation. This can lead to an underestimation of building lifetime energy consumption. A better understanding of the relationship between durability and energy performance can inform integration of degradation dynamics into energy modeling software. This will improve lifetime building energy consumption estimations as well as inform appropriate retrofit strategies and timing. This paper reviews current durability literature, various standards for window performance ratings and weathering methods, existing in situ IGU energy performance measurement techniques, and whole-building energy effects. The challenges and disparities among various studies are analyzed and discussed. The authors hope that further work in this area will lead to the development of improved in situ test methods to assess IGU degradation in the field and link this knowledge to improved energy performance modeling approaches. Photovoltaics have the advantages of being clean and renewable and have gained a wide range of applications. It is promising to use photovoltaic energy for the power supply of buildings, as the building sector accounts for a large portion of global energy consumption with a constantly increasing trend. However, photovoltaics are greatly affected by time and environment, and it is usually combined with batteries to form a photovoltaic – battery energy storage system to meet the load demand. This paper aims to analyze and compare energy management strategies of an on-grid solar photovoltaic – battery system for a real building project in a typical May and October region, but unlike other studies, the strategies used in this paper are very simple and easy to implement. It can also realize photovoltaic, battery and grid to meet the load power demand. Two strategies are used in this paper. Strategy 1 is to maximize the utilization of the energy generated by photovoltaics: while the energy generated by photovoltaics cannot meet the load demand, the battery will provide energy, and while the battery cannot meet the load demand, the grid will provide energy. The photovoltaic energy is given priority to the battery under the premise of meeting the load demand. Strategy 2 is to use the time-of-use electricity price, and the battery obtains cheap electricity at night to meet the load of the high electricity price the next day. The feasibility of the strategy used is demonstrated by actual data of buildings and photovoltaic – battery energy storage systems. An analytical hierarchy model of the impact of solar reflectance, thermal emittance, heat transfer coefficient, and heat storage coefficient on building energy consumption was established through the implementation of orthogonal design experiments. The EnergyPlus software (v9.0.1) was utilized to simulate building energy consumption across diverse climatic regions in China, providing essential benchmarks for the orthogonal design. The results of the range analysis consistently indicate that, barring regions characterized by extremely cold climates, solar reflectance emerges as the predominant factor exerting an influence on building energy consumption. As geographical latitude increases, the impact of the heat transfer coefficient becomes progressively larger, while the weight of thermal reflectance concurrently diminishes. Drawing upon the principles rooted in the gradient refractive rate theory and the concept of atmospheric window radiation, a range of high-reflectance and high-emittance cool roof coatings in various colors were meticulously developed. A spectrophotometer was employed to precisely quantify their reflectance properties, and simulations were subsequently conducted to scrutinize their energy-saving characteristics. The results demonstrate that the cool roof coatings that were developed using the methodology described in this paper exhibit substantial enhancements in reflectance, with increases of 0.24, 0.25, 0.37, and 0.35 for the yellow, red, blue, and green cool roofing materials, respectively, in comparison to conventional colored coatings. Under typical summer conditions, these enhancements translate to significant reductions in roof temperatures, ranging from 9.4 °C to 14.0 °C. Moreover, the simulations exploring the cooling loads for the roofs of differing colors consistently revealed remarkable energy savings. These savings were quantified to be 4.1%, 3.9%, 5.5%, and 5.4%, respectively, when compared to conventional coatings of the corresponding colors. The climate change–built environment nexus is complex and intertwined. Recognizing the rising air temperatures and solar radiations owing to climate-induced global warming, it is critical to manage the increased building energy and cooling loads in the Middle East Gulf states' hot desert climates (Bwh). One of the top climate priorities is to promote climate resilience by reducing risks and enhancing adaptation options. This study aims to systematically review the existing literature to document building energy performances in and the associated adaptation measures of the Middle East Gulf states, regarding the implications of climate change. It is accomplished by answering the following questions: 'How well do we understand the effects of climate change on building energy use in hot urban deserts?' and 'What are the most appropriate adaptation strategies to reduce energy use in hot urban deserts?'. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis protocols (PRISMA), 17 studies on the influence of present and future weather scenarios on building performance are examined, considering variations in typology, methods, and input variables. Finally, the paper identifies the preferred methods and input variables for modelling building energy performance under predicted climatic changes. Passive design considerations are considered highly effective in mitigating and adapting to climate change implications. Thermal insulation and efficient window glazing are identified as the best-performing strategies, while the use of solar Photovoltaic (PV) is considered efficient in meeting the primary energy demands. As the scale of electricity consumption grows, the peak electricity consumption prediction of campus buildings is essential for effective building energy system management. The selection of an appropriate model is of paramount importance to accurately predict peak electricity consumption of campus buildings due to the substantial variations in electricity consumption trends and characteristics among campus buildings. In this paper, we proposed eight deep recurrent neural networks and compared their performance in predicting peak electricity consumption for each campus building to select the best model. Furthermore, we applied an attention approach capable of capturing long sequence patterns and controlling the importance level of input states. The test cases involve three campus buildings in Incheon City, South Korea: an office building, a nature science building, and a general education building, each with different scales and trends of electricity consumption. The experiment results demonstrate the importance of accurate model selection to enhance building energy efficiency, as no single model's performance dominates across all buildings.
