The rapid discrimination of bacteria is currently an emerging trend in the fields of food safety, medical detection, and environmental observation. Traditional methods often require lengthy culturing processes, specialized analytical equipment, and bacterial recognition receptors. In response to this need, we have developed a paper-based fluorescence sensor array platform for identifying different bacteria. The sensor array is based on three unique carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as sensing units, each modified with a different antibiotic (polymyxin B, ampicillin, and gentamicin). These antibiotic-modified CQDs can aggregate on the bacterial surface, triggering aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching. The sensor array exhibits varying fluorescent responses to different bacterial species. To achieve low-cost and portable detection, CQDs were formulated into fluorescent ink and used with an inkjet printer to manufacture paper-based sensor arrays. A smartphone was used to collect the responses generated by the bacteria and platform. Diverse machine learning algorithms were utilized to discriminate bacterial types. Our findings showcase the platform's remarkable capability to differentiate among five bacterial strains, within a detection range spanning from 1.0 × 10 3  CFU/mL to 1.0 × 10 7  CFU/mL. Its practicality is further validated through the accurate identification of blind bacterial samples. The rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 caused the COVID-19 pandemic and accelerated vaccine development to prevent the spread of the virus and control the disease. Given the sustained high infectivity and evolution of SARS-CoV-2, there is an ongoing interest in developing COVID-19 serology tests to monitor population-level immunity. To address this critical need, we designed a paper-based multiplexed vertical flow assay (xVFA) using five structural proteins of SARS-CoV-2, detecting IgG and IgM antibodies to monitor changes in COVID-19 immunity levels. Our platform not only tracked longitudinal immunity levels but also categorized COVID-19 immunity into three groups: protected, unprotected, and infected, based on the levels of IgG and IgM antibodies. We operated two xVFAs in parallel to detect IgG and IgM antibodies using a total of 40 μL of human serum sample in <20 min per test. After the assay, images of the paper-based sensor panel were captured using a mobile phone-based custom-designed optical reader and then processed by a neural network-based serodiagnostic algorithm. The serodiagnostic algorithm was trained with 120 measurements/tests and 30 serum samples from 7 randomly selected individuals and was blindly tested with 31 serum samples from 8 different individuals, collected before vaccination as well as after vaccination or infection, achieving an accuracy of 89.5%. The competitive performance of the xVFA, along with its portability, cost-effectiveness, and rapid operation, makes it a promising computational point-of-care (POC) serology test for monitoring COVID-19 immunity, aiding in timely decisions on the administration of booster vaccines and general public health policies to protect vulnerable populations.

A new analytical method for chronic kidney disease (CKD) detection utilizing paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) combined with machine learning is presented. The analytical protocol is rapid and simple, based on metabolic profile alterations in urine. Anonymized raw urine samples were deposited (10 μL each) onto pointed PS-MS sample strips. Without waiting for the sample to dry, 75 μL of acetonitrile and high voltage were applied to the strips, using high resolution mass spectrometry measurement (15 s per sample) with polarity switching to detect a wide range of metabolites. Random forest machine learning was used to classify the resulting data. The diagnostic performance for the potential diagnosis of CKD was evaluated for accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, achieving results >96% for the training data and >91% for validation and test data sets. Metabolites selected by the classification model as up- or down-regulated in healthy or CKD samples were tentatively identified and in agreement with previously reported literature. The potential utilization of this approach to discriminate albuminuria categories (normo, micro, and macroalbuminuria) was also demonstrated. This study indicates that PS-MS combined with machine learning has the potential to be used as a rapid and simple diagnostic tool for CKD.

Background: Accurate real-time eye tracking is crucial in oculomotor system research. While the scleral search coil system is the gold standard, its implantation procedure and bulkiness pose challenges. Camera-based systems are affected by ambient lighting and require high computational and electric power., New Method: This study presents a novel eye tracker using proximity capacitive sensors made of carbon-nanotube-paper-composite (CPC). These sensors detect femtofarad-level capacitance changes caused by primate corneal movement during horizontal and vertical eye rotations. Data processing and machine learning algorithms are evaluated to enhance the accuracy of gaze angle prediction., Results: The system performance is benchmarked against the scleral coil during smooth pursuits, saccades tracking, and fixations. Caused by the tick-borne spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi , Lyme disease (LD) is the most common vector-borne infectious disease in North America and Europe. Though timely diagnosis and treatment are effective in preventing disease progression, current tests are insensitive in early stage LD, with a sensitivity of <50%. Additionally, the serological testing currently recommended by the U.S. Center for Disease Control has high costs (>$400/test) and extended sample-to-answer timelines (>24 h). To address these challenges, we created a cost-effective and rapid point-of-care (POC) test for early-stage LD that assays for antibodies specific to seven Borrelia antigens and a synthetic peptide in a paper-based multiplexed vertical flow assay (xVFA). We trained a deep-learning-based diagnostic algorithm to select an optimal subset of antigen/peptide targets and then blindly tested our xVFA using human samples ( N (+) = 42, N (-) = 54), achieving an area-under-the-curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity of 0.950, 90.5%, and 87.0%, respectively, outperforming previous LD POC tests. With batch-specific standardization and threshold tuning, the specificity of our blind-testing performance improved to 96.3%, with an AUC and sensitivity of 0.963 and 85.7%, respectively.

Paper spray ionization has been used as a fast sampling/ionization method for the direct mass spectrometric analysis of biological samples at ambient conditions. Here, we demonstrated that by utilizing paper spray ionization-mass spectrometry (PSI-MS) coupled with field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS), predictive metabolic and lipidomic profiles of routine breast core needle biopsies could be obtained effectively. By the combination of machine learning algorithms and pathological examination reports, we developed a classification model, which has an overall accuracy of 87.5% for an instantaneous differentiation between cancerous and noncancerous breast tissues utilizing metabolic and lipidomic profiles. Our results suggested that paper spray ionization-ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry (PSI-IMS-MS) is a powerful approach for rapid breast cancer diagnosis based on altered metabolic and lipidomic profiles.

Colorimetric paper sensors are used in various fields due to their convenience and intuitive manner. However, these sensors present low accuracy in practical use because it is difficult to distinguish color changes for a minute amount of analyte with the naked eye. Herein, we demonstrate that a machine learning (ML)-based paper sensor platform accurately determines the color changes. We fabricated a colorimetric paper sensor by adsorbing polyaniline nanoparticles (PAni-NPs), whose color changes from blue to green when the ambient pH decreases. Adding glucose oxidase (GOx) to the paper sensor enables colorimetric glucose detection. Target analytes (10 μL) were aliquoted onto the paper sensors, and their images were taken with a smartphone under the same conditions in a darkroom. The red-green-blue (RGB) data from the images were extracted and used to train and test three regression models: support vector regression (SVR), decision tree regression (DTR), and random forest regression (RFR). Of the three regression models, RFR performed the best at estimating pH levels ( R 2 = 0.957) ranging from pH 2 to 10 and glucose concentrations ( R 2 = 0.922) ranging from 0 to 10 mg mL -1 .

Pre-evaluating scientific paper quality aids in alleviating peer review pressure and fostering scientific advancement. Although prior studies have identified numerous quality-related features, their effectiveness and representativeness of paper content remain to be comprehensively investigated. Addressing this issue, we propose a content-based interpretable method for pre-evaluating the quality of scientific papers. Firstly, we define quality attributes of computer science (CS) papers as integrity, clarity, novelty, and significance, based on peer review criteria from 11 top-tier CS conferences. We formulate the problem as two classification tasks: Accepted/Disputed/Rejected (ADR) and Accepted/Rejected (AR). Subsequently, we construct fine-grained features from metadata and knowledge entity networks, including text structure, readability, references, citations, semantic novelty, and network structure. We empirically evaluate our method using the ICLR paper dataset, achieving optimal performance with the Random Forest model, yielding F1 scores of 0.715 and 0.762 for the two tasks, respectively. Through feature analysis and case studies employing SHAP interpretable methods, we demonstrate that the proposed features enhance the performance of machine learning models in scientific paper quality evaluation, offering interpretable evidence for model decisions.

One of the most widely used measures of scientific impact is the number of citations. However, due to its heavy-tailed distribution, citations are fundamentally difficult to predict but can be improved. This study was aimed at investigating the factors and parts influencing the citation number of a scientific paper in the otology field. Therefore, this work proposes a new solution that utilizes machine learning and natural language processing to process English text and provides a paper citation as the predicted results. Different algorithms are implemented in this solution, such as linear regression, boosted decision tree, decision forest, and neural networks. The application of neural network regression revealed that papers' abstracts have more influence on the citation numbers of otological articles. This new solution has been developed in visual programming using Microsoft Azure machine learning at the back end and Programming Without Coding Technology at the front end. Computer scientists often publish their source code accompanying their publications, prominently using code repositories across various domains. Despite the concurrent existence of scholarly articles and their associated official code repositories, explicit references linking the two are often missing. Traditionally, identifying whether scholarly content and code repositories pertain to the same research project requires manual inspection, a time-consuming task. This paper proposes a deep learning-based algorithm for automatically matching scholarly articles with their corresponding official code repositories. Our findings indicate that the most common linking information includes the paper title and BibTeX entries, typically found in the repository’s readme document. In this study, we employed SPECTER for vector embedding of paper and repository metadata. Utilizing these embedding representations with the Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM), our method achieved an F1 score of 0.94. Moreover, combining our best model with a rule-based approach improved performance by 5.31%. This study successfully delineates a connection between academic papers and associated official code repositories, minimizing reliance on explicit bibliographic information in repositories.

Machine-learning techniques are used in this BJPsych special issue on precision medicine in attempts to create statistical models that make clinically relevant predictions for individual patients. In this primer, we outline five key points that are helpful for a new reader to consider in order to engage with the field and evaluate the literature. These points include the consideration of why we are interested in new statistical approaches, how they may produce individualised predictions, what caveats need to be kept in-mind and why the interest and engagment of clinicians and clinical researchers is critical to successful model development and implementation. We hope that the following primer will provide shared understanding to encourage dialogue between clinical and methodological fields.

Since the fusing process in electrophotography has a significant impact not only on printing quality but also on machine internal temperature and toner blocking on outlet tray, accurate paper temperature prediction for various types of papers is essential, especially in the production printing. To develop the thermophysical model of fusing process to predict the paper temperature after the fusing process, thermal properties such as thermal conductivity, specific heat, and thermal contact resistance of several types of papers are necessary. However, paper is composed of complex fiber, surface coating, filler, and moisture, making it difficult to measure thermophysical properties of paper accurately. This work developed a machine learning (ML) model that can predict the thermophysical properties of paper based on a conventionally used 1D thermal network model of the fusing process and experiment results. The thermophysical properties of each paper obtained by ML and the thermophysical properties obtained by the conventional method were input to the thermal network model to predict the paper temperature after the fusing process and compared with the measured paper temperatures of the experiment. The results showed that the paper temperature was predicted with higher accuracy by using thermophysical properties obtained by ML than that by the conventional method. Although the method for predicting paper temperature by using only ML had been proposed, it had the disadvantage of requiring a large number of training experiments. In contrast, this method trained under the conditions of one fusing temperature and two printing speeds, and was able to predict under five fusing temperatures and four printing speeds. Objective: To identify and highlight research papers representing noteworthy developments in signals, sensors, and imaging informatics in 2020., Method: A broad literature search was conducted on PubMed and Scopus databases. We combined Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms and keywords to construct particular queries for sensors, signals, and image informatics. We only considered papers that have been published in journals providing at least three articles in the query response. Section editors then independently reviewed the titles and abstracts of preselected papers assessed on a three-point Likert scale. Papers were rated from 1 (do not include) to 3 (should be included) for each topical area (sensors, signals, and imaging informatics) and those with an average score of 2 or above were subsequently read and assessed again by two of the three co-editors. Finally, the top 14 papers with the highest combined scores were considered based on consensus., Results: The search for papers was executed in January 2021. After removing duplicates and conference proceedings, the query returned a set of 101, 193, and 529 papers for sensors, signals, and imaging informatics, respectively. We filtered out journals that had less than three papers in the query results, reducing the number of papers to 41, 117, and 333, respectively. From these, the co-editors identified 22 candidate papers with more than 2 Likert points on average, from which 14 candidate best papers were nominated after intensive discussion. At least five external reviewers then rated the remaining papers. The four finalist papers were found using the composite rating of all external reviewers. These best papers were approved by consensus of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) Yearbook editorial board., Conclusions: Sensors, signals, and imaging informatics is a dynamic field of intense research. The four best papers represent advanced approaches for combining, processing, modeling, and analyzing heterogeneous sensor and imaging data. Machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence, is increasingly used in health research, including nursing and maternal outcomes research. Machine learning algorithms are complex and involve statistics and terminology that are not common in health research. The purpose of this methods paper is to describe three machine learning algorithms in detail and provide an example of their use in maternal outcomes research. The three algorithms, classification and regression trees, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, and random forest, may be used to understand risk groups, select variables for a model, and rank variables' contribution to an outcome, respectively. While machine learning has plenty to contribute to health research, it also has some drawbacks, and these are discussed as well. To provide an example of the different algorithms' function, they were used on a completed cross-sectional study examining the association of oxytocin total dose exposure with primary cesarean section. Oil–paper insulation is the critical insulation element in the modern power system. Under a harsh operating environment, oil–paper insulation will deteriorate gradually, resulting in electrical accidents. Thus, it is important to evaluate and monitor the insulation state of oil–paper insulation. Firstly, this paper introduces the geometric structure and physical components of oil–paper insulation and shows the main reasons and forms of oil–paper insulation's degradation. Then, this paper reviews the existing condition assessment techniques for oil–paper insulation, such as the dissolved gas ratio analysis, aging kinetic model, cellulose–water adsorption isotherm, oil–paper moisture balance curve, and dielectric response technique. Additionally, the advantages and limitations of the above condition assessment techniques are discussed. In particular, this paper highlights the dielectric response technique and introduces its evaluation principle in detail: (1) collecting the dielectric response data, (2) extracting the feature parameters from the collected dielectric response data, and (3) establishing the condition assessment models based on the extracted feature parameters and the machine learning techniques. Finally, two full potential studies are proposed, which research hotspots' oil–paper insulation and the electrical–chemical joint evaluation technique. In summary, this paper concludes the principles, advantages and limitation of the existing condition assessment techniques for oil–paper insulation, and we put forward two potential research avenues. It is difficult to predict index values or stock prices with a single financial formula. They are affected by many factors, such as political conditions, global economy, unexpected events, market anomalies, and the characteristics of the relevant companies, and many computer science techniques are being used to make more accurate predictions about them. This study aimed to predict the values of the XKAGT index by using the monthly closing values of the Borsa Istanbul (BIST) Forestry, Paper and Printing (XKAGT) index between 2002 and 2023, and the machine learning techniques artificial neural networks (ANN), random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and gradient boosting machine (GBM). Furthermore, the performances of four machine learning techniques were compared. Factors affecting stock prices are generally classified as macroeconomic and microeconomic factors. As a result of examining the studies on determining the macroeconomic factors affecting the stock markets, 10 macroeconomic factors were determined as input. The macroeconomic variables used were crude oil price, exchange rate of USD/TRY, dollar index, BIST100 index, gold price, money supply (M2), S&P 500 index, US 10-year bond interest, export-import coverage rate in the forest products sector, and deposits interest rate. It was determined that all machine learning techniques used in the study performed successfully in predicting the index value, but the k-nearest neighbor algorithm showed the best performance with R2=0.996, RMSE=71.36, and a MAE of 40.8. Therefore, in line with the current variables, investors can make analyzes using any of the ANN, RF, KNN, and GBM techniques to predict the future index value, which will lead them to accurate results.
