In our original paper (Buono et al., 2020), we investigated the dynamics of degassing (e.g., bubble nucleation and growth, degassing styles and regimes) of H 2 O-, CO 2 - and H 2 O-CO 2 -rich evolved alkaline melts over a wide range of variables (final pressures, decompression rates, volatile compositions and contents, temperatures) through a comprehensive review of previous and new HP (high pressure)-HT (high temperature) decompression experiments. The criticism of Allabar and Nowak regards a restricted part of our results, i.e., those concerning homogeneous bubble nucleation from our new experiments on H 2 O-rich melts. Their aim is refusing the classical nucleation theory (CNT), widely accepted in literature to explain homogeneous bubble nucleation in magmas, for evolved alkaline melts in favour of the spinodal decomposition. We found that the Authors of the Comment do not provide any new evidence in support of their thesis, but they keep only arbitrary and erroneous conjectures of our new experimental data. As we stated in our original paper, the evaluation of the specific bubble nucleation mechanism (CNT vs. spinodal decomposition) is beyond the scope of our research, as appropriate studies on both experimental and natural products would be necessary to shed light on this complex issue. Animal fossils preserved in various geological materials, such as limestone, claystone, or amber, provide detailed information on extinct species that is indispensable for retracing the evolution of terrestrial life. Here, we present the first record of an animal fossil preserved in opal formed by weathering with such high-resolution details that even individual cuticle hairs are observed. The fossil consists of the exoskeleton of a nymphal insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and either the family Tettigarctidae or the Cicadidae. This identification is based on anatomical details such as the tibial and femoral morphology of the forelegs. The exoskeleton of the insect was primarily zeolitized during the alteration of the host rocks and later sealed in opal deposited by silica-rich fluids derived from the continental weathering of the volcanic host rocks. Organic matter is preserved in the form of amorphous carbon. This finding makes opal formed by rocks weathering a new, complementary source of animal fossils, offering new prospects for the search for ancient life in the early history of Earth and possibly other terrestrial planets such as Mars, where weathering-formed opal occurs.

This bibliometric study of a large publication set dealing with research on climate change aims at mapping the relevant literature from a bibliometric perspective and presents a multitude of quantitative data: (1) The growth of the overall publication output as well as (2) of some major subfields, (3) the contributing journals and countries as well as their citation impact, and (4) a title word analysis aiming to illustrate the time evolution and relative importance of specific research topics. The study is based on 222,060 papers (articles and reviews only) published between 1980 and 2014. The total number of papers shows a strong increase with a doubling every 5–6 years. Continental biomass related research is the major subfield, closely followed by climate modeling. Research dealing with adaptation, mitigation, risks, and vulnerability of global warming is comparatively small, but their share of papers increased exponentially since 2005. Research on vulnerability and on adaptation published the largest proportion of very important papers (in terms of citation impact). Climate change research has become an issue also for disciplines beyond the natural sciences. The categories Engineering and Social Sciences show the strongest field-specific relative increase. The Journal of Geophysical Research, the Journal of Climate, the Geophysical Research Letters, and Climatic Change appear at the top positions in terms of the total number of papers published. Research on climate change is quantitatively dominated by the USA, followed by the UK, Germany, and Canada. The citation-based indicators exhibit consistently that the UK has produced the largest proportion of high impact papers compared to the other countries (having published more than 10,000 papers). Also, Switzerland, Denmark and also The Netherlands (with a publication output between around 3,000 and 6,000 papers) perform top—the impact of their contributions is on a high level. The title word analysis shows that the term climate change comes forward with time. Furthermore, the term impact arises and points to research dealing with the various effects of climate change. The discussion of the question of human induced climate change towards a clear fact (for the majority of the scientific community) stimulated research on future pathways for adaptation and mitigation. Finally, the term model and related terms prominently appear independent of time, indicating the high relevance of climate modeling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study identifies new wood-based products with considerable potential and attractive markets, including textiles, liquid biofuels, platform chemicals, plastics, and packaging. We apply a mixed-methods review to examine how the position of the forest industry in a given value chain determines the respective production value. An assessment is provided as to the degree to which these emerging wood-based products could compensate for the foreseen decline of graphic paper markets in four major forest industry countries: USA, Canada, Sweden, and Finland. A 1%-2% market share in selected global markets implies a potential increase in revenues of 18-75 billion euros per annum in the four selected countries by 2030. This corresponds to 10%-43% of the production value of forest industries in 2016 and compares with a projected decline of graphic paper industry revenue of 5.5 billion euros by 2030. The respective impacts on wood use are manifold, as many of the new products utilize by-products as feedstock. The increase in primary wood use, which is almost entirely attributed to construction and to some extent textiles markets, would be in the range of 15-133 million [m.sup.3], corresponding to 2%-21% of the current industrial round-wood use in the selected countries.Key words: bioeconomy, competitiveness, forest industry, new wood-based products, value chain.Cette etude identifie de nouveaux produits a base de bois ayant un grand potentiel de developpement ainsi que des marches attrayants, tels que les textiles, les biocarburants liquides, les produits chimiques porteurs, les plastiques et les emballages. Nous avons utilise une revue des methodes mixtes pour analyser comment la position de l'industrie forestiere dans une chaine de valeur donnee determine la production de valeur pour les produits selectionnes. On presente une evaluation des chances que ces nouveaux produits puissent compenser le declin envisage dans le marche du papier graphique dans quatre principaux pays producteurs de bois: les Etats-Unis, le Canada, la Suede et la Finlande. Une augmentation de 1 a 2 % des parts de marche dans des secteurs precis represente un gain potentiel de revenus de 18 a 75 milliards d'euros par annee d'ici 2030, et ce pour les quatre pays. Cela represente 10 a 43 % de la valeur de la production des industries forestieres en 2016 comparativement a une diminution projetee des revenus de 5,5 milliards d'euros pour l'industrie du papier graphique d'ici 2030. Les impacts respectifs sur l'utilisation du bois sont nombreux, puisque plusieurs de ces nouveaux produits utilisent des sous- produits du bois comme matiere premiere. The article presents a critique of a previously published paper on behavioral and perception geography. The author disagrees with the negative assessment of the power of the image. He claims that the assertions made in the article are too sweeping, the treatment is unbalanced, and errors abound. The assumption that there is a strong relationship between environmental images and actual behavior is widely held. One should not assume that any general environmental image chosen to measure will be directly related to every highly specific environmental action.

Gierlowski-Kordesch and Cassle (2015, Earth-Science Reviews 148, 209–227) interpreted microconchids (extinct tentaculitoid encrusters) as strictly marine, rejecting the previous conclusions that these organisms occupied a variety of habitats ranging from marine to non-marine. We argue that due to misunderstanding of previous statements concerning the affinity of microconchids, the authors used an actualistic approach and incorrectly compared microconchids with modern phoronids, which led to oversimplifications and misinterpretations. Also their idea that microconchids, as supposedly strictly marine organisms, were preserved in non-marine settings only because of transport by storm surges and tsunamis is unsupported on paleontological grounds. These errors led to mistaken conclusions about microconchid paleoecology that must be discussed in order to avoid an erroneous interpretation of microconchid paleoenvironments. Preferential concentration of marine particles with small excess density depends on initial conditions and inertia parameter. When the initial velocity of the particle equals that of the fluid at the particle position, the mathematical relation shows that there will be no velocity difference between the fluid and the particle. Particles follow the flow and fail to show any preferential concentration. The preferential concentration of these particles by the turbulence is a transient feature of the flow. The density ratio is a crucial factor for the degree of preferential concentration.
