Simple Summary: In radiotherapy treatment, organs at risk and target volumes are contoured by the clinicians to prepare a dosimetry plan. In retrospective data, these structures are not often standardised to universal names across the patients plans, which is required to enable data mining and analysis. In this paper, a new method was proposed and evaluated to automatically standardise radiotherapy structures names using machine learning algorithms. The proposed approach was deployed over a dataset with 1613 patients collected from Liverpool & Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centres, New South Wales, Australia. It was concluded that machine learning techniques can standardise the dosimetry plan structures, taking into consideration the integration of multiple modalities representing each structure during the training process. In progressing the use of big data in health systems, standardised nomenclature is required to enable data pooling and analyses. In many radiotherapy planning systems and their data archives, target volumes (TV) and organ-at-risk (OAR) structure nomenclature has not been standardised. Machine learning (ML) has been utilised to standardise volumes nomenclature in retrospective datasets. However, only subsets of the structures have been targeted. Within this paper, we proposed a new approach for standardising all the structures nomenclature by using multi-modal artificial neural networks. A cohort consisting of 1613 breast cancer patients treated with radiotherapy was identified from Liverpool & Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centres, NSW, Australia. Four types of volume characteristics were generated to represent each target and OAR volume: textual features, geometric features, dosimetry features, and imaging data. Five datasets were created from the original cohort, the first four represented different subsets of volumes and the last one represented the whole list of volumes. For each dataset, 15 sets of combinations of features were generated to investigate the effect of using different characteristics on the standardisation performance. The best model reported 99.416% classification accuracy over the hold-out sample when used to standardise all the nomenclatures in a breast cancer radiotherapy plan into 21 classes. Our results showed that ML based automation methods can be used for standardising naming conventions in a radiotherapy plan taking into consideration the inclusion of multiple modalities to better represent each volume. Simple Summary: Accurately grading gliomas, which are the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumors in adults, poses a significant challenge for radiologists. This study explores the application of Deep Learning techniques in assisting tumor grading using Magnetic Resonance Images (MRIs). By analyzing a glioma database sourced from multiple public datasets and comparing different settings, the aim of this study is to develop a robust and reliable grading system. The study demonstrates that by focusing on the tumor region of interest and augmenting the available data, there is a significant improvement in both the accuracy and confidence of tumor grade classifications. While successful in differentiating low-grade gliomas from high-grade gliomas, the accurate classification of grades 2, 3, and 4 remains challenging. The research findings have significant implications for advancing the development of a non-invasive, robust, and trustworthy data-driven system to support clinicians in the diagnosis and therapy planning of glioma patients. Glioma is the most common type of tumor in humans originating in the brain. According to the World Health Organization, gliomas can be graded on a four-stage scale, ranging from the most benign to the most malignant. The grading of these tumors from image information is a far from trivial task for radiologists and one in which they could be assisted by machine-learning-based decision support. However, the machine learning analytical pipeline is also fraught with perils stemming from different sources, such as inadvertent data leakage, adequacy of 2D image sampling, or classifier assessment biases. In this paper, we analyze a glioma database sourced from multiple datasets using a simple classifier, aiming to obtain a reliable tumor grading and, on the way, we provide a few guidelines to ensure such reliability. Our results reveal that by focusing on the tumor region of interest and using data augmentation techniques we significantly enhanced the accuracy and confidence in tumor classifications. Evaluation on an independent test set resulted in an AUC-ROC of 0.932 in the discrimination of low-grade gliomas from high-grade gliomas, and an AUC-ROC of 0.893 in the classification of grades 2, 3, and 4. The study also highlights the importance of providing, beyond generic classification performance, measures of how reliable and trustworthy the model's output is, thus assessing the model's certainty and robustness. Simple Summary: To investigate the adoption of machine learning in palliative care research and clinical practice, we systematically searched for published research papers on the topic. We found several publications that used different kinds of machine learning in palliative care for different use cases. However, on average, there needs to be more rigorous testing of the models to ensure that they work well in different settings. Objective: To summarize the available literature on using machine learning (ML) for palliative care practice as well as research and to assess the adherence of the published studies to the most important ML best practices. Methods: The MEDLINE database was searched for the use of ML in palliative care practice or research, and the records were screened according to PRISMA guidelines. Results: In total, 22 publications using machine learning for mortality prediction (n = 15), data annotation (n = 5), predicting morbidity under palliative therapy (n = 1), and predicting response to palliative therapy (n = 1) were included. Publications used a variety of supervised or unsupervised models, but mostly tree-based classifiers and neural networks. Two publications had code uploaded to a public repository, and one publication uploaded the dataset. Conclusions: Machine learning in palliative care is mainly used to predict mortality. One expanding area of bioinformatics is medical diagnosis through the categorization of biomedical characteristics. Automatic medical strategies to boost the diagnostic through machine learning (ML) methods are challenging. They require a formal examination of their performance to identify the best conditions that enhance the ML method. This work proposes variants of the Voting and Stacking (VC and SC) ensemble strategies based on diverse auto-tuning supervised machine learning techniques to increase the efficacy of traditional baseline classifiers for the automatic diagnosis of vertebral column orthopedic illnesses. The ensemble strategies are created by first combining a complete set of auto-tuned baseline classifiers based on different processes, such as geometric, probabilistic, logic, and optimization. Next, the three most promising classifiers are selected among k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), Naïve Bayes (NB), Logistic Regression (LR), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and Decision Tree (DT). The grid-search K-Fold cross-validation strategy is applied to auto-tune the baseline classifier hyperparameters. The performances of the proposed ensemble strategies are independently compared with the auto-tuned baseline classifiers. A concise analysis evaluates accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and ROC-ACU metrics. The analysis also examines the misclassified disease elements to find the most and least reliable classifiers for this specific medical problem. The results show that the VC ensemble strategy provides an improvement comparable to that of the best baseline classifier (the kNN). Meanwhile, when all baseline classifiers are included in the SC ensemble, this strategy surpasses 95% in all the evaluated metrics, standing out as the most suitable option for classifying vertebral column diseases. Simple Summary: Stimulated Raman Histology (SRH) is a technique that uses laser light to create detailed images of tissues without the need for traditional staining. This study aimed to use deep learning to classify oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and different non-malignant tissue types using SRH images. The performances of the classifications between SRH images and the original images obtained from stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) were compared. A deep learning model was trained on 64 images and tested on 16, showing that it could effectively identify tissue types during surgery, potentially speeding up decision making in oral cancer surgery. Stimulated Raman Histology (SRH) employs the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) of photons at biomolecules in tissue samples to generate histological images. Subsequent pathological analysis allows for an intraoperative evaluation without the need for sectioning and staining. The objective of this study was to investigate a deep learning-based classification of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and the sub-classification of non-malignant tissue types, as well as to compare the performances of the classifier between SRS and SRH images. Raman shifts were measured at wavenumbers k1 = 2845 cm−1 and k2 = 2930 cm−1. SRS images were transformed into SRH images resembling traditional H&E-stained frozen sections. The annotation of 6 tissue types was performed on images obtained from 80 tissue samples from eight OSCC patients. A VGG19-based convolutional neural network was then trained on 64 SRS images (and corresponding SRH images) and tested on 16. A balanced accuracy of 0.90 (0.87 for SRH images) and F1-scores of 0.91 (0.91 for SRH) for stroma, 0.98 (0.96 for SRH) for adipose tissue, 0.90 (0.87 for SRH) for squamous epithelium, 0.92 (0.76 for SRH) for muscle, 0.87 (0.90 for SRH) for glandular tissue, and 0.88 (0.87 for SRH) for tumor were achieved. Portal hypertension is a complex medical condition characterized by elevated blood pressure in the portal venous system. The conventional diagnosis of such disease often involves invasive procedures such as liver biopsy, endoscopy, or imaging techniques with contrast agents, which can be uncomfortable for patients and carry inherent risks. This study presents a deep neural network method in support of the non-invasive diagnosis of portal hypertension in patients with chronic liver diseases. The proposed method utilizes readily available clinical data, thus eliminating the need for invasive procedures. A dataset composed of standard laboratory parameters is used to train and validate the deep neural network regressor. The experimental results exhibit reasonable performance in distinguishing patients with portal hypertension from healthy individuals. Such performances may be improved by using larger datasets of high quality. These findings suggest that deep neural networks can serve as useful auxiliary diagnostic tools, aiding healthcare professionals in making timely and accurate decisions for patients suspected of having portal hypertension. Simple Summary: Artificial intelligence (AI) based on deep neural networks (DNNs) has demonstrated great performance in computer vision. However, their clinical application in the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer using medical imaging has been limited. Not knowing the AI's decision-making process (interpretability) presents a major obstacle in AI medical applications. To this end, we studied and propose the integration of DNN-derived biomarkers and expert-derived radiomics in interpretable ConRad models. ConRad models achieved great performance for malignancy classification while maintaining inherent interpretability. Without interpretability, a black box classifier such as end-to-end DNNs may harbor critical failure modes that are unknown and unknowable. Despite the unprecedented performance of deep neural networks (DNNs) in computer vision, their clinical application in the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer using medical imaging has been limited. One of the critical challenges for integrating diagnostic DNNs into radiological and oncological applications is their lack of interpretability, preventing clinicians from understanding the model predictions. Therefore, we studied and propose the integration of expert-derived radiomics and DNN-predicted biomarkers in interpretable classifiers, which we refer to as ConRad, for computerized tomography (CT) scans of lung cancer. Importantly, the tumor biomarkers can be predicted from a concept bottleneck model (CBM) such that once trained, our ConRad models do not require labor-intensive and time-consuming biomarkers. In our evaluation and practical application, the only input to ConRad is a segmented CT scan. The proposed model was compared to convolutional neural networks (CNNs) which act as a black box classifier. We further investigated and evaluated all combinations of radiomics, predicted biomarkers and CNN features in five different classifiers. We found the ConRad models using nonlinear SVM and the logistic regression with the Lasso outperformed the others in five-fold cross-validation, with the interpretability of ConRad being its primary advantage. The Lasso is used for feature selection, which substantially reduces the number of nonzero weights while increasing the accuracy. Overall, the proposed ConRad model combines CBM-derived biomarkers and radiomics features in an interpretable ML model which demonstrates excellent performance for lung nodule malignancy classification. Automated dental imaging interpretation is one of the most prolific areas of research using artificial intelligence. X-ray imaging systems have enabled dental clinicians to identify dental diseases. However, the manual process of dental disease assessment is tedious and error-prone when diagnosed by inexperienced dentists. Thus, researchers have employed different advanced computer vision techniques, as well as machine and deep learning models for dental disease diagnoses using X-ray imagery. In this regard, a lightweight Mask-RCNN model is proposed for periapical disease detection. The proposed model is constructed in two parts: a lightweight modified MobileNet-v2 backbone and region-based network (RPN) are proposed for periapical disease localization on a small dataset. To measure the effectiveness of the proposed model, the lightweight Mask-RCNN is evaluated on a custom annotated dataset comprising images of five different types of periapical lesions. The results reveal that the model can detect and localize periapical lesions with an overall accuracy of 94%, a mean average precision of 85%, and a mean insection over a union of 71.0%. The proposed model improves the detection, classification, and localization accuracy significantly using a smaller number of images compared to existing methods and outperforms state-of-the-art approaches. Osteosarcoma is a bone tumor which is malignant. There are many difficulties when doctors manually identify patients' MRI images to complete the diagnosis. The osteosarcoma in MRI images is very complex, making its recognition and segmentation resource-consuming. Automatic osteosarcoma area segmentation can solve these problems to a certain extent. However, existing studies usually fail to balance segmentation accuracy and efficiency. They are either sensitive to noise with low accuracy or time-consuming. So we propose an auxiliary segmentation method based on denoising and local enhancement. The method first optimizes the osteosarcoma images, including removing noise using the Edge Enhancement based Transformer for Medical Image Denoising (Eformer) and using a non-parameter method to localize and enhance the tumor region in MRI images. Osteosarcoma was then segmented by Deep Feature Aggregation for Real-Time Semantic Segmentation (DFANet). Our method achieves impressive segmentation accuracy. Effective screening provides efficient and quick diagnoses of COVID-19 and could alleviate related problems in the health care system. A prediction model that combines multiple features to assess contamination risks was established in the hope of supporting healthcare workers worldwide in triaging patients, particularly in situations with limited health care resources. Furthermore, a lack of diagnosis kits and asymptomatic cases can lead to missed or delayed diagnoses, exposing visitors, medical staff, and patients to 2019-nCoV contamination. Non-clinical techniques including data mining, expert systems, machine learning, and other artificial intelligence technologies have a crucial role to play in containment and diagnosis in the COVID-19 outbreak. This study developed Enhanced Gravitational Search Optimization with a Hybrid Deep Learning Model (EGSO-HDLM) for COVID-19 diagnoses using epidemiology data. The major aim of designing the EGSO-HDLM model was the identification and classification of COVID-19 using epidemiology data. In order to examine the epidemiology data, the EGSO-HDLM model employed a hybrid convolutional neural network with a gated recurrent unit based fusion (HCNN-GRUF) model. In addition, the hyperparameter optimization of the HCNN-GRUF model was improved by the use of the EGSO algorithm, which was derived by including the concepts of cat map and the traditional GSO algorithm. The design of the EGSO algorithm helps in reducing the ergodic problem, avoiding premature convergence, and enhancing algorithm efficiency. To demonstrate the better performance of the EGSO-HDLM model, experimental validation on a benchmark dataset was performed. This article describes a system for analyzing acoustic data to assist in the diagnosis and classification of children's speech sound disorders (SSDs) using a computer. The analysis concentrated on identifying and categorizing four distinct types of Chinese SSDs. The study collected and generated a speech corpus containing 2540 stopping, backing, final consonant deletion process (FCDP), and affrication samples from 90 children aged 3–6 years with normal or pathological articulatory features. Each recording was accompanied by a detailed diagnostic annotation by two speech–language pathologists (SLPs). Classification of the speech samples was accomplished using three well-established neural network models for image classification. The feature maps were created using three sets of MFCC (Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients) parameters extracted from speech sounds and aggregated into a three-dimensional data structure as model input. We employed six techniques for data augmentation to augment the available dataset while avoiding overfitting. The experiments examine the usability of four different categories of Chinese phrases and characters. Experiments with different data subsets demonstrate the system's ability to accurately detect the analyzed pronunciation disorders.
