Given the increasingly important role that the use of artificial intelligence algorithms is taking on in the medical field today (especially in oncology), the purpose of this systematic review is to analyze the main reports on such algorithms applied for the prognostic evaluation of patients with head and neck malignancies. The objective of this paper is to examine the currently available literature in the field of artificial intelligence applied to head and neck oncology, particularly in the prognostic evaluation of the patient with this kind of tumor, by means of a systematic review. The paper exposes an overview of the applications of artificial intelligence in deriving prognostic information related to the prediction of survival and recurrence and how these data may have a potential impact on the choice of therapeutic strategy, making it increasingly personalized. Federated learning (FL) is a scheme in which several consumers work collectively to unravel machine learning (ML) problems, with a dominant collector synchronizing the procedure. This decision correspondingly enables the training data to be distributed, guaranteeing that the individual device's data are secluded. The paper systematically reviewed the available literature using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guiding principle. The study presents a systematic review of appliable ML approaches for FL, reviews the categorization of FL, discusses the FL application areas, presents the relationship between FL and Blockchain Technology (BT), and discusses some existing literature that has used FL and ML approaches. The study also examined applicable machine learning models for federated learning. The inclusion measures were (i) published between 2017 and 2021, (ii) written in English, (iii) published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, and (iv) Preprint published papers. Unpublished studies, thesis and dissertation studies, (ii) conference papers, (iii) not in English, and (iv) did not use artificial intelligence models and blockchain technology were all removed from the review. In total, 84 eligible papers were finally examined in this study. Finally, in recent years, the amount of research on ML using FL has increased. Accuracy equivalent to standard feature-based techniques has been attained, and ensembles of many algorithms may yield even better results. We discovered that the best results were obtained from the hybrid design of an ML ensemble employing expert features. However, some additional difficulties and issues need to be overcome, such as efficiency, complexity, and smaller datasets. Simple Summary: In radiotherapy treatment, organs at risk and target volumes are contoured by the clinicians to prepare a dosimetry plan. In retrospective data, these structures are not often standardised to universal names across the patients plans, which is required to enable data mining and analysis. In this paper, a new method was proposed and evaluated to automatically standardise radiotherapy structures names using machine learning algorithms. The proposed approach was deployed over a dataset with 1613 patients collected from Liverpool & Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centres, New South Wales, Australia. It was concluded that machine learning techniques can standardise the dosimetry plan structures, taking into consideration the integration of multiple modalities representing each structure during the training process. In progressing the use of big data in health systems, standardised nomenclature is required to enable data pooling and analyses. In many radiotherapy planning systems and their data archives, target volumes (TV) and organ-at-risk (OAR) structure nomenclature has not been standardised. Machine learning (ML) has been utilised to standardise volumes nomenclature in retrospective datasets. However, only subsets of the structures have been targeted. Within this paper, we proposed a new approach for standardising all the structures nomenclature by using multi-modal artificial neural networks. A cohort consisting of 1613 breast cancer patients treated with radiotherapy was identified from Liverpool & Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centres, NSW, Australia. Four types of volume characteristics were generated to represent each target and OAR volume: textual features, geometric features, dosimetry features, and imaging data. Five datasets were created from the original cohort, the first four represented different subsets of volumes and the last one represented the whole list of volumes. For each dataset, 15 sets of combinations of features were generated to investigate the effect of using different characteristics on the standardisation performance. The best model reported 99.416% classification accuracy over the hold-out sample when used to standardise all the nomenclatures in a breast cancer radiotherapy plan into 21 classes. Our results showed that ML based automation methods can be used for standardising naming conventions in a radiotherapy plan taking into consideration the inclusion of multiple modalities to better represent each volume. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the current state of AI-based techniques used in combination with non-invasive diagnostic imaging modalities including reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and dermoscopy. We also aimed to determine whether the application of AI-based techniques can lead to improved diagnostic accuracy of melanoma. Methods: A systematic search was conducted via the Medline/PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases for eligible publications between 2018 and 2022. Screening methods adhered to the 2020 version of the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Included studies utilized AI-based algorithms for melanoma detection and directly addressed the review objectives. Results: We retrieved 40 papers amongst the three databases. All studies directly comparing the performance of AI-based techniques with dermatologists reported the superior or equivalent performance of AI-based techniques in improving the detection of melanoma. In studies directly comparing algorithm performance on dermoscopy images to dermatologists, AI-based algorithms achieved a higher ROC (>80%) in the detection of melanoma. In these comparative studies using dermoscopic images, the mean algorithm sensitivity was 83.01% and the mean algorithm specificity was 85.58%. Studies evaluating machine learning in conjunction with OCT boasted accuracy of 95%, while studies evaluating RCM reported a mean accuracy rate of 82.72%. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate the robust potential of AI-based techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes through the early identification of melanoma. Further studies are needed to assess the generalizability of these AI-based techniques across different populations and skin types, improve standardization in image processing, and further compare the performance of AI-based techniques with board-certified dermatologists to evaluate clinical applicability. This paper presents the development of a novel algorithm for unsupervised learning called RUN-ICON (Reduce UNcertainty and Increase CONfidence). The primary objective of the algorithm is to enhance the reliability and confidence of unsupervised clustering. RUN-ICON leverages the K-means++ method to identify the most frequently occurring dominant centres through multiple repetitions. It distinguishes itself from existing K-means variants by introducing novel metrics, such as the Clustering Dominance Index and Uncertainty, instead of relying solely on the Sum of Squared Errors, for identifying the most dominant clusters. Simple Summary: Accurately grading gliomas, which are the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumors in adults, poses a significant challenge for radiologists. This study explores the application of Deep Learning techniques in assisting tumor grading using Magnetic Resonance Images (MRIs). By analyzing a glioma database sourced from multiple public datasets and comparing different settings, the aim of this study is to develop a robust and reliable grading system. The study demonstrates that by focusing on the tumor region of interest and augmenting the available data, there is a significant improvement in both the accuracy and confidence of tumor grade classifications. While successful in differentiating low-grade gliomas from high-grade gliomas, the accurate classification of grades 2, 3, and 4 remains challenging. The research findings have significant implications for advancing the development of a non-invasive, robust, and trustworthy data-driven system to support clinicians in the diagnosis and therapy planning of glioma patients. Glioma is the most common type of tumor in humans originating in the brain. According to the World Health Organization, gliomas can be graded on a four-stage scale, ranging from the most benign to the most malignant. The grading of these tumors from image information is a far from trivial task for radiologists and one in which they could be assisted by machine-learning-based decision support. However, the machine learning analytical pipeline is also fraught with perils stemming from different sources, such as inadvertent data leakage, adequacy of 2D image sampling, or classifier assessment biases. In this paper, we analyze a glioma database sourced from multiple datasets using a simple classifier, aiming to obtain a reliable tumor grading and, on the way, we provide a few guidelines to ensure such reliability. Our results reveal that by focusing on the tumor region of interest and using data augmentation techniques we significantly enhanced the accuracy and confidence in tumor classifications. Evaluation on an independent test set resulted in an AUC-ROC of 0.932 in the discrimination of low-grade gliomas from high-grade gliomas, and an AUC-ROC of 0.893 in the classification of grades 2, 3, and 4. The study also highlights the importance of providing, beyond generic classification performance, measures of how reliable and trustworthy the model's output is, thus assessing the model's certainty and robustness. Network virtualization is a technology proven to be a key enabling a family of strategies in different targets, such as energy efficiency, economic revenue, network usage, adaptability or failure protection. Network virtualization allows us to adapt the needs of a network to new circumstances, resulting in greater flexibility. The allocation decisions of the demands onto the physical network resources impact the costs and the benefits. Therefore it is one of the major current problems, called virtual network embedding (VNE). Many algorithms have been proposed recently in the literature to solve the VNE problem for different targets. Due to subjectivity in refereeing, the results of race walking are often questioned. To overcome this limitation, artificial-intelligence-based technologies have demonstrated their potential. The paper aims at presenting WARNING, an inertial-based wearable sensor integrated with a support vector machine algorithm to automatically identify race-walking faults. Two WARNING sensors were used to gather the 3D linear acceleration related to the shanks of ten expert race-walkers. Participants were asked to perform a race circuit following three race-walking conditions: legal, illegal with loss-of-contact and illegal with knee-bent. Thirteen machine learning algorithms, belonging to the decision tree, support vector machine and k-nearest neighbor categories, were evaluated. An inter-athlete training procedure was applied. Algorithm performance was evaluated in terms of overall accuracy, F1 score and G-index, as well as by computing the prediction speed. The quadratic support vector was confirmed to be the best-performing classifier, achieving an accuracy above 90% with a prediction speed of 29,000 observations/s when considering data from both shanks. A significant reduction of the performance was assessed when considering only one lower limb side. Simple Summary: Breast cancer is one of the most common health problems in the world. As a result, governments and researchers in different countries are trying to help prevent the disease. In this work, we develop a clinical decision support methodology based on machine learning tools. This methodology helps identify breast cancer patients and determine the risk factors for this disease. In addition, the proposed strategy can help detect the disease in its early stages using modern easy-to-interpret machine learning tools. Worldwide, the coronavirus has intensified the management problems of health services, significantly harming patients. Some of the most affected processes have been cancer patients' prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Breast cancer is the most affected, with more than 20 million cases and at least 10 million deaths by 2020. Various studies have been carried out to support the management of this disease globally. This paper presents a decision support strategy for health teams based on machine learning (ML) tools and explainability algorithms (XAI). The main methodological contributions are: first, the evaluation of different ML algorithms that allow classifying patients with and without cancer from the available dataset; and second, an ML methodology mixed with an XAI algorithm, which makes it possible to predict the disease and interpret the variables and how they affect the health of patients. The results show that first, the XGBoost Algorithm has a better predictive capacity, with an accuracy of 0.813 for the train data and 0.81 for the test data; and second, with the SHAP algorithm, it is possible to know the relevant variables and their level of significance in the prediction, and to quantify the impact on the clinical condition of the patients, which will allow health teams to offer early and personalized alerts for each patient. Quality inspection in the industrial production field is experiencing a strong technological development that benefits from the combination of vision-based techniques with artificial intelligence algorithms. This paper initially addresses the problem of defect identification for circularly symmetric mechanical components, characterized by the presence of periodic elements. In the specific case of knurled washers, we compare the performances of a standard algorithm for the analysis of grey-scale image with a Deep Learning (DL) approach. The standard algorithm is based on the extraction of pseudo-signals derived from the conversion of the grey scale image of concentric annuli. In the DL approach, the component inspection is shifted from the entire sample to specific areas repeated along the object profile where the defect may occur. The standard algorithm provides better results in terms of accuracy and computational time with respect to the DL approach. Nevertheless, DL reaches accuracy higher than 99% when performance is evaluated targeting the identification of damaged teeth. Electrical utilities and system operators (SOs) are constantly looking for solutions to problems in the management and control of the power network. For this purpose, SOs are exploring new research fields, which might bring contributions to the power system environment. A clear example is the field of computer science, within which artificial intelligence (AI) has been developed and is being applied to many fields. In power systems, AI could support the fault prediction of cable joints. Despite the availability of many legacy methods described in the literature, fault prediction is still critical, and it needs new solutions. For this purpose, in this paper, the authors made a further step in the evaluation of machine learning methods (ML) for cable joint health assessment. Six ML algorithms have been compared and assessed on a consolidated test scenario. It simulates a distributed measurement system which collects measurements from medium-voltage (MV) cable joints. Typical metrics have been applied to compare the performance of the algorithms. The analysis is then completed considering the actual in-field conditions and the SOs' requirements. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in medicine could support diagnostic and prognostic analyses and decision making. In the field of dermatopathology, there have been various papers that have trained algorithms for the recognition of different types of skin lesions, such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC), seborrheic keratosis (SK) and dermal nevus. Furthermore, the difficulty in diagnosing particular melanocytic lesions, such as Spitz nevi and melanoma, considering the grade of interobserver variability among dermatopathologists, has led to an objective difficulty in training machine learning (ML) algorithms to a totally reliable, reportable and repeatable level. In this work we tried to train a fast random forest (FRF) algorithm, typically used for the classification of clusters of pixels in images, to highlight anomalous areas classified as melanoma "defects" following the Allen–Spitz criteria. The adopted image vision diagnostic protocol was structured in the following steps: image acquisition by selecting the best zoom level of the microscope; preliminary selection of an image with a good resolution; preliminary identification of macro-areas of defect in each preselected image; identification of a class of a defect in the selected macro-area; training of the supervised machine learning FRF algorithm by selecting the micro-defect in the macro-area; execution of the FRF algorithm to find an image vision performance indicator; and analysis of the output images by enhancing lesion defects. The precision achieved by the FRF algorithm proved to be appropriate with a discordance of 17% with respect to the dermatopathologist, allowing this type of supervised algorithm to be nominated as a help to the dermatopathologist in the challenging diagnosis of malignant melanoma. There has been a rapid increase in the number of artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML)-based biomarker diagnostic classifiers in recent years. However, relatively little work has focused on assessing the robustness of these biomarkers, i.e., investigating the uncertainty of the AI/ML models that these biomarkers are based upon. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a framework to evaluate the already-developed classifiers with regard to their robustness by focusing on the variability of the classifiers' performance and changes in the classifiers' parameter values using factor analysis and Monte Carlo simulations. Specifically, this work evaluates (1) the importance of a classifier's input features and (2) the variability of a classifier's output and model parameter values in response to data perturbations. Additionally, it was found that one can estimate a priori how much replacement noise a classifier can tolerate while still meeting accuracy goals. To illustrate the evaluation framework, six different AI/ML-based biomarkers are developed using commonly used techniques (linear discriminant analysis, support vector machines, random forest, partial-least squares discriminant analysis, logistic regression, and multilayer perceptron) for a metabolomics dataset involving 24 measured metabolites taken from 159 study participants. The framework was able to correctly predict which of the classifiers should be less robust than others without recomputing the classifiers itself, and this prediction was then validated in a detailed analysis. Simple Summary: The High Throughput Truthing project aims to develop a dataset of stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (sTILs) density evaluations in hematoxylin and eosin-stained invasive breast cancer specimens fit for a regulatory purpose. After completion of the pilot study, the analysis demonstrated inconsistencies and gaps in the provided training to pathologists. Select regions of interest (ROIs) were reviewed by an expert panel, who provided annotations and commentary on the challenges of the sTILs assessment. We used these annotations to develop a training document and reference standard for new training materials. These materials will train crowd-sourced pathologists to help create an algorithm validation dataset and contribute to sTILs evaluations in clinical practice. The High Throughput Truthing project aims to develop a dataset for validating artificial intelligence and machine learning models (AI/ML) fit for regulatory purposes. The context of this AI/ML validation dataset is the reporting of stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (sTILs) density evaluations in hematoxylin and eosin-stained invasive breast cancer biopsy specimens. After completing the pilot study, we found notable variability in the sTILs estimates as well as inconsistencies and gaps in the provided training to pathologists. Using the pilot study data and an expert panel, we created custom training materials to improve pathologist annotation quality for the pivotal study. We categorized regions of interest (ROIs) based on their mean sTILs density and selected ROIs with the highest and lowest sTILs variability. In a series of eight one-hour sessions, the expert panel reviewed each ROI and provided verbal density estimates and comments on features that confounded the sTILs evaluation. We aggregated and shaped the comments to identify pitfalls and instructions to improve our training materials. From these selected ROIs, we created a training set and proficiency test set to improve pathologist training with the goal to improve data collection for the pivotal study. We are not exploring AI/ML performance in this paper. Instead, we are creating materials that will train crowd-sourced pathologists to be the reference standard in a pivotal study to create an AI/ML model validation dataset. We live in a period when smart devices gather a large amount of data from a variety of sensors and it is often the case that decisions are taken based on them in a more or less autonomous manner. Still, many of the inputs do not prove to be essential in the decision-making process; hence, it is of utmost importance to find the means of eliminating the noise and concentrating on the most influential attributes. In this sense, we put forward a method based on the swarm intelligence paradigm for extracting the most important features from several datasets. The thematic of this paper is a novel implementation of an algorithm from the swarm intelligence branch of the machine learning domain for improving feature selection. The combination of machine learning with the metaheuristic approaches has recently created a new branch of artificial intelligence called learnheuristics. This approach benefits both from the capability of feature selection to find the solutions that most impact on accuracy and performance, as well as the well known characteristic of swarm intelligence algorithms to efficiently comb through a large search space of solutions. The latter is used as a wrapper method in feature selection and the improvements are significant. In this paper, a modified version of the salp swarm algorithm for feature selection is proposed. This solution is verified by 21 datasets with the classification model of K-nearest neighborhoods. Furthermore, the performance of the algorithm is compared to the best algorithms with the same test setup resulting in better number of features and classification accuracy for the proposed solution. The use of machine learning algorithms to improve productivity and quality and to maximize efficiency in the steel industry has recently become a major trend. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that automates the setup in the cold-rolling process and maximizes productivity by predicting the roll forces and motor loads with multi-layer perceptron networks in addition to balancing the motor loads to increase production speed. The proposed method first constructs multilayer perceptron models with all available information from the components, the hot-rolling process, and the cold-rolling process. Then, the cold-rolling variables related to the normal part set-up are adjusted to balance the motor loads among the rolling stands. To validate the proposed method, we used a data set with 70,533 instances of 128 types of steels with 78 variables, extracted from the actual manufacturing process. The proposed method was found to be superior to the physical prediction model currently used for setups with regard to the prediction accuracy, motor load balancing, and production speed. Simple Summary: Artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining more and more attention in radiology. The efficiency of AI-based algorithms to solve specific problems is, in some cases, far superior compared to human-driven approaches. This is particularly evident in some repetitive tasks, such as segmentation, where AI usually outperforms manual approaches. AI may be also used in quantification where it can provide, for example, fast and efficient longitudinal follow up in liver tumour burden. AI, thanks to the association with radiomic and big data, may also suggest a diagnosis. Finally, AI algorithms can also reduce scan time, increase image quality and, in the case of computed tomography, reduce patient dose. Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most promising fields of research in medical imaging so far. By means of specific algorithms, it can be used to help radiologists in their routine workflow. There are several papers that describe AI approaches to solve different problems in liver and pancreatic imaging. These problems may be summarized in four different categories: segmentation, quantification, characterization and image quality improvement. Segmentation is usually the first step of successive elaborations. If done manually, it is a time-consuming process. Therefore, the semi-automatic and automatic creation of a liver or a pancreatic mask may save time for other evaluations, such as quantification of various parameters, from organs volume to their textural features. The alterations of normal liver and pancreas structure may give a clue to the presence of a diffuse or focal pathology. AI can be trained to recognize these alterations and propose a diagnosis, which may then be confirmed or not by radiologists. Finally, AI may be applied in medical image reconstruction in order to increase image quality, decrease dose administration (referring to computed tomography) and reduce scan times. The study was conducted by applying machine learning and data mining methods to treatment personalization. This allows individual patient characteristics to be investigated. The personalization method was built on the clustering method and associative rules. It was suggested to determine the average distance between instances in order to find the optimal performance metrics. The formalization of the medical data preprocessing stage was proposed in order to find personalized solutions based on current standards and pharmaceutical protocols. The patient data model was built using time-dependent and time-independent parameters. Personalized treatment is usually based on the decision tree method. This approach requires significant computation time and cannot be parallelized. Therefore, it was proposed to group people by conditions and to determine deviations of parameters from the normative parameters of the group, as well as the average parameters. The novelty of the paper is the new clustering method, which was built from an ensemble of cluster algorithms, and the usage of the new distance measure with Hopkins metrics, which were 0.13 less than for the k-means method. The Dunn index was 0.03 higher than for the BIRCH (balanced iterative reducing and clustering using hierarchies) algorithm. The next stage was the mining of associative rules provided separately for each cluster. This allows a personalized approach to treatment to be created for each patient based on long-term monitoring. A recent study of property valuation literature indicated that the vast majority of researchers and academics in the field of real estate are focusing on Mass Appraisals rather than on the further development of the existing valuation methods. Researchers are using a variety of mathematical models used within the field of Machine Learning, which are applied to real estate valuations with high accuracy. On the other hand, it appears that professional valuers do not use these sophisticated models during daily practice, rather they operate using the traditional five methods. The Department of Lands and Surveys in Cyprus recently published the property values (General Valuation) for taxation purposes which were calculated by applying a hybrid model based on the Cost approach with the use of regression analysis in order to quantify the specific parameters of each property. In this paper, the authors propose a number of algorithms based on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning approaches that improve the accuracy of these results significantly. The aim of this work is to investigate the capabilities of such models and how they can be used for the mass appraisal of properties, to highlight the importance of sensitivity analysis in such models and also to increase the transparency so that automated valuation models (AVM) can be used for the day-to-day work of the valuer. Accurate electricity price forecasting has become a substantial requirement since the liberalization of the electricity markets. Due to the challenging nature of electricity prices, which includes high volatility, sharp price spikes and seasonality, various types of electricity price forecasting models still compete and cannot outperform each other consistently. Neural Networks have been successfully used in machine learning problems and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) have been proposed to address time-dependent learning problems. In particular, Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) are tailor-made for time series price estimation. In this paper, we propose to use multi-layer Gated Recurrent Units as a new technique for electricity price forecasting. We have trained a variety of algorithms with three-year rolling window and compared the results with the RNNs. In our experiments, three-layered GRUs outperformed all other neural network structures and state-of-the-art statistical techniques in a statistically significant manner in the Turkish day-ahead market.
