Simple Summary: Breast cancer is a significant cause of female cancer-related deaths in the US. Checking how severe the cancer is helps in planning treatment. Modern AI methods are good at grading cancer, but they are not used much in hospitals yet. We developed and utilized ensemble deep learning algorithms for addressing the tasks of classifying (1) breast cancer subtype and (2) breast cancer invasiveness from whole slide image (WSI) histopathology slides. Our datasets were based on two widely employed datasets from different centers for two different tasks: BACH and BreakHis. Within the BACH dataset, a proposed ensemble strategy was employed, incorporating VGG16 and ResNet50 architectures to achieve precise classification of breast cancer histopathology images. Introducing a novel image patching technique to preprocess a high-resolution image facilitated a focused analysis of localized regions of interest. The annotated BACH dataset encompassed 400 WSIs across four distinct classes: Normal, Benign, In Situ Carcinoma, and Invasive Carcinoma. In addition, the proposed ensemble was used on the BreakHis dataset, utilizing VGG16, ResNet34, and ResNet50 models to classify microscopic images into eight distinct categories (four benign and four malignant). For both datasets, a five-fold cross-validation approach was employed for rigorous training and testing. Preliminary experimental results indicated a patch classification accuracy of 95.31% (for the BACH dataset) and WSI image classification accuracy of 98.43% (BreakHis). Photocatalysts have made great contributions to the degradation of pollutants to achieve environmental purification. The traditional method of developing new photocatalysts is to design and perform a large number of experiments to continuously try to obtain efficient photocatalysts that can degrade pollutants, which is time-consuming, costly, and does not necessarily achieve the best performance of the photocatalyst. The rapid development of photocatalysis has been accelerated by the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Intelligent algorithms can be utilized to design photocatalysts and predict photocatalytic performance, resulting in a reduction in development time and the cost of new catalysts. In this paper, the intelligent algorithms for photocatalyst design and photocatalytic performance prediction are reviewed, especially the artificial neural network model and the model optimized by an intelligent algorithm. A detailed discussion is given on the advantages and disadvantages of the neural network model, as well as its application in photocatalysis optimized by intelligent algorithms. The use of intelligent algorithms in photocatalysis is challenging and long term due to the lack of suitable neural network models for predicting the photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts. The prediction of photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts can be aided by the combination of various intelligent optimization algorithms and neural network models, but it is only useful in the early stages. In the epoch characterized by the anticipation of autonomous vehicles, the quality of the embedded system software, its reliability, safety, and security is significant. The testing of embedded software is an increasingly significant element of the development process. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the process of testing embedded software in vehicles constitutes a significant area of both research and practical consideration, arising from the escalating complexity of these systems. This paper presents the preliminary development of the AVESYS framework which facilitates the application of open-source artificial intelligence algorithms in the embedded system testing process. The aim of this work is to evaluate its effectiveness in identifying anomalies in the test environment that could potentially affect testing results. The raw data from the test environment, mainly communication signals and readings from temperature, as well as current and voltage sensors are pre-processed and used to train machine learning models. Simple Summary: In radiotherapy treatment, organs at risk and target volumes are contoured by the clinicians to prepare a dosimetry plan. In retrospective data, these structures are not often standardised to universal names across the patients plans, which is required to enable data mining and analysis. In this paper, a new method was proposed and evaluated to automatically standardise radiotherapy structures names using machine learning algorithms. The proposed approach was deployed over a dataset with 1613 patients collected from Liverpool & Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centres, New South Wales, Australia. It was concluded that machine learning techniques can standardise the dosimetry plan structures, taking into consideration the integration of multiple modalities representing each structure during the training process. In progressing the use of big data in health systems, standardised nomenclature is required to enable data pooling and analyses. In many radiotherapy planning systems and their data archives, target volumes (TV) and organ-at-risk (OAR) structure nomenclature has not been standardised. Machine learning (ML) has been utilised to standardise volumes nomenclature in retrospective datasets. However, only subsets of the structures have been targeted. Within this paper, we proposed a new approach for standardising all the structures nomenclature by using multi-modal artificial neural networks. A cohort consisting of 1613 breast cancer patients treated with radiotherapy was identified from Liverpool & Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centres, NSW, Australia. Four types of volume characteristics were generated to represent each target and OAR volume: textual features, geometric features, dosimetry features, and imaging data. Five datasets were created from the original cohort, the first four represented different subsets of volumes and the last one represented the whole list of volumes. For each dataset, 15 sets of combinations of features were generated to investigate the effect of using different characteristics on the standardisation performance. The best model reported 99.416% classification accuracy over the hold-out sample when used to standardise all the nomenclatures in a breast cancer radiotherapy plan into 21 classes. Our results showed that ML based automation methods can be used for standardising naming conventions in a radiotherapy plan taking into consideration the inclusion of multiple modalities to better represent each volume. Recent innovations in artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques for skin lesion image interpretation show potential for the use of AI in the early detection of melanoma. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the current state of AI-based techniques used in combination with non-invasive diagnostic imaging modalities including reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and dermoscopy. We also aimed to determine whether the application of AI-based techniques can lead to improved diagnostic accuracy of melanoma. Methods: A systematic search was conducted via the Medline/PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases for eligible publications between 2018 and 2022. Screening methods adhered to the 2020 version of the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Included studies utilized AI-based algorithms for melanoma detection and directly addressed the review objectives. Results: We retrieved 40 papers amongst the three databases. All studies directly comparing the performance of AI-based techniques with dermatologists reported the superior or equivalent performance of AI-based techniques in improving the detection of melanoma. In studies directly comparing algorithm performance on dermoscopy images to dermatologists, AI-based algorithms achieved a higher ROC (>80%) in the detection of melanoma. In these comparative studies using dermoscopic images, the mean algorithm sensitivity was 83.01% and the mean algorithm specificity was 85.58%. Studies evaluating machine learning in conjunction with OCT boasted accuracy of 95%, while studies evaluating RCM reported a mean accuracy rate of 82.72%. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate the robust potential of AI-based techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes through the early identification of melanoma. Further studies are needed to assess the generalizability of these AI-based techniques across different populations and skin types, improve standardization in image processing, and further compare the performance of AI-based techniques with board-certified dermatologists to evaluate clinical applicability. To achieve flexible, dynamic and automated network resource management in Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms can provide an effective solution. In the paper, we propose the solution for network resources allocation, where the AI algorithm is responsible for controlling intent-based routing in SDN. The paper focuses on the problem of optimal switching of intents between two designated paths using the Deep-Q-Learning approach based on an artificial neural network. The Developed Networked Application Emulation System (NAPES) allows the AI solution to be tested with different patterns to evaluate the performance of the proposed solution. Simple Summary: Accurately grading gliomas, which are the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumors in adults, poses a significant challenge for radiologists. This study explores the application of Deep Learning techniques in assisting tumor grading using Magnetic Resonance Images (MRIs). By analyzing a glioma database sourced from multiple public datasets and comparing different settings, the aim of this study is to develop a robust and reliable grading system. The study demonstrates that by focusing on the tumor region of interest and augmenting the available data, there is a significant improvement in both the accuracy and confidence of tumor grade classifications. While successful in differentiating low-grade gliomas from high-grade gliomas, the accurate classification of grades 2, 3, and 4 remains challenging. The research findings have significant implications for advancing the development of a non-invasive, robust, and trustworthy data-driven system to support clinicians in the diagnosis and therapy planning of glioma patients. Glioma is the most common type of tumor in humans originating in the brain. According to the World Health Organization, gliomas can be graded on a four-stage scale, ranging from the most benign to the most malignant. The grading of these tumors from image information is a far from trivial task for radiologists and one in which they could be assisted by machine-learning-based decision support. However, the machine learning analytical pipeline is also fraught with perils stemming from different sources, such as inadvertent data leakage, adequacy of 2D image sampling, or classifier assessment biases. In this paper, we analyze a glioma database sourced from multiple datasets using a simple classifier, aiming to obtain a reliable tumor grading and, on the way, we provide a few guidelines to ensure such reliability. Our results reveal that by focusing on the tumor region of interest and using data augmentation techniques we significantly enhanced the accuracy and confidence in tumor classifications. Evaluation on an independent test set resulted in an AUC-ROC of 0.932 in the discrimination of low-grade gliomas from high-grade gliomas, and an AUC-ROC of 0.893 in the classification of grades 2, 3, and 4. The study also highlights the importance of providing, beyond generic classification performance, measures of how reliable and trustworthy the model's output is, thus assessing the model's certainty and robustness. The identification and characterization of lung diseases is one of the most interesting research topics in recent years. They require accurate and rapid diagnosis. Although lung imaging techniques have many advantages for disease diagnosis, the interpretation of medial lung images has always been a major problem for physicians and radiologists due to diagnostic errors. This has encouraged the use of modern artificial intelligence techniques such as deep learning. In this paper, a deep learning architecture based on EfficientNetB7, known as the most advanced architecture among convolutional networks, has been constructed for classification of medical X-ray and CT images of lungs into three classes namely: common pneumonia, coronavirus pneumonia and normal cases. In terms of accuracy, the proposed model is compared with recent pneumonia detection techniques. The results provided robust and consistent features to this system for pneumonia detection with predictive accuracy according to the three classes mentioned above for both imaging modalities: radiography at 99.81% and CT at 99.88%. This work implements an accurate computer-aided system for the analysis of radiographic and CT medical images. A smart grid is a promising use-case of AIoT (AI (artificial intelligence) across IoT (internet of things)) that enables bidirectional communication among utilities that arises with demand response (DR) schemes for demand-side management (DSM) and consumers that manage their power demands according to received DR signals. Disaggregating composite electric energy consumption data from a single minimal set of plug-panel current and voltage sensors installed at the electric panel in a practical field of interest, nonintrusive appliance load monitoring (NIALM), a cost-effective load disaggregation approach for (residential) DSM, is able to discern individual electrical appliances concerned without accessing each of them by individual plug-load power meters (smart plugs) deployed intrusively. The most common load disaggregation approaches are based on machine learning algorithms such as artificial neural networks, while approaches based on evolutionary computing, metaheuristic algorithms considered as global optimization and search techniques, have recently caught the attention of researchers. This paper presents a genetic algorithm, developed in consideration of parallel evolutionary computing, and aims to address NIALM, whereby load disaggregation from composite electric energy consumption data is declared as a combinatorial optimization problem and is solved by the algorithm. The algorithm is accelerated in parallel, as it would involve large amounts of NIALM data disaggregated through evolutionary computing, chromosomes, and/or evolutionary cycles to dominate its performance in load disaggregation and excessively cost its execution time. The complexity of forward kinematic modelling increases with the increase in the degrees of freedom for a manipulator. To reduce the computational weight and time lag for desired output transformation, this paper proposes a forward kinematic model mapped with the help of the Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) architecture tuned by a novel meta-heuristic algorithm, namely, the Cooperative Search Optimisation Algorithm (CSOA). The architecture presented is able to automatically learn the kinematic properties of the manipulator. Learning is accomplished iteratively based only on the observation of the input–output relationship. Related simulations are carried out on a 3-Degrees of Freedom (DOF) manipulator on the Robot Operating System (ROS). The dataset created from the simulation is divided 65–35 for training–testing of the proposed model. The metrics used for model validation include spread value, cost and runtime for the training dataset, and Mean Relative Error, Normal Mean Square Error, and Mean Absolute Error for the testing dataset. A comparative analysis of the CSOA-RBFNN model is performed with an artificial neural network, support vector regression model, and with with other meta-heuristic RBFNN models, i.e., PSO-RBFNN and GWO-RBFNN, that show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed technique. This paper shows the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in Li-ion battery charging methods by introducing a new charging algorithm based on artificial neural networks (ANNs). The proposed charging algorithm is able to find an optimized charging current profile, through ANNs, considering the real-time conditions of the Li-ion batteries. To test and validate the proposed approach, a low-cost battery management system (BMS) was developed, supporting up to 168 cells in series and n cells in parallel. When compared with the multistage charging algorithm, the proposed charging algorithm revealed a shorter charging time (7.85%) and a smaller temperature increase (32.95%). Thus, the results show that the proposed algorithm based on AI is able to effectively charge and balance batteries and can be regarded as a subject of interest for future research. Natural gas consumption has increased with an average annual growth rate of about 10% between 2012 and 2017. Total natural gas consumption accounted for 6.4% of consumed primary energy resources in 2016, up from 5.4% in 2012, making China the world’s third-largest gas user. Therefore, accurately predicting natural gas consumption has become very important for market participants to organize indigenous production, foreign supply contracts and infrastructures in a better way. This paper first presents the main factors affecting China’s natural gas consumption, and then proposes a hybrid forecasting model by combining the particle swarm optimization algorithm and wavelet neural network (PSO-WNN). In PSO-WNN model, the initial weights and wavelet parameters are optimized using PSO algorithm and updated through a dynamic learning rate to improve the training speed, forecasting precision and reduce fluctuation of WNN. The experimental results show the superiority of the proposed model compared with ANN and WNN based models. Then, this study conducts the scenario analysis of the natural gas consumption from 2017 to 2025 in China based on three scenarios, namely low scenario, reference scenario and high scenario, and the results illustrate that the China’s natural gas consumption is going to be 342.70, 358.27, 366.42 million tce (“standard” tons coal equivalent) in 2020, and 407.01, 437.95, 461.38 million tce in 2025 under the low, reference and high scenarios, respectively. Ensemble learning of swarm intelligence evolutionary algorithm of artificial neural network (ANN) is one of the core research directions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). As a representative member of swarm intelligence evolutionary algorithm, shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA) has the advantages of simple structure, easy implementation, short operation time, and strong global optimization ability. However, SFLA is susceptible to fall into local optimas in the face of complex and multi-dimensional symmetric function optimization, which leads to the decline of convergence accuracy. This paper proposes an improved shuffled frog leaping algorithm of threshold oscillation based on simulated annealing (SA-TO-SFLA). In this algorithm, the threshold oscillation strategy and simulated annealing strategy are introduced into the SFLA, which makes the local search behavior more diversified and the ability to escape from the local optimas stronger. By using multi-dimensional symmetric function such as drop-wave function, Schaffer function N.2, Rastrigin function, and Griewank function, two groups (i: SFLA, SA-SFLA, TO-SFLA, and SA-TO-SFLA; ii: SFLA, ISFLA, MSFLA, DSFLA, and SA-TO-SFLA) of comparative experiments are designed to analyze the convergence accuracy and convergence time. The results show that the threshold oscillation strategy has strong robustness. Moreover, compared with SFLA, the convergence accuracy of SA-TO-SFLA algorithm is significantly improved, and the median of convergence time is greatly reduced as a whole. The convergence accuracy of SFLA algorithm on these four test functions are 90%, 100%, 78%, and 92.5%, respectively, and the median of convergence time is 63.67 s, 59.71 s, 12.93 s, and 8.74 s, respectively; The convergence accuracy of SA-TO-SFLA algorithm on these four test functions is 99%, 100%, 100%, and 97.5%, respectively, and the median of convergence time is 48.64 s, 32.07 s, 24.06 s, and 3.04 s, respectively. The energy efficiency and flight endurance of small unmanned aerial vehicles (SUAVs) can be improved through the implementation of autonomous soaring strategies. Biologically inspired flight techniques such as dynamic and thermal soaring offer significant energy savings through the exploitation of naturally occurring wind phenomena for thrustless flight. Recent interest in the application of artificial intelligence algorithms for autonomous soaring has been motivated by the pursuit of instilling generalized behavior in control systems, centered around the use of neural networks. However, the topology of such networks is usually predetermined, restricting the search space of potential solutions, while often resulting in complex neural networks that can pose implementation challenges for the limited hardware onboard small-scale autonomous vehicles. In exploring a novel method of generating neurocontrollers, this paper presents a neural network-based soaring strategy to extend flight times and advance the potential operational capability of SUAVs. In this study, the Neuroevolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) algorithm is used to train efficient and effective neurocontrollers that can control a simulated aircraft along sustained dynamic and thermal soaring trajectories. The proposed approach evolves interpretable neural networks in a way that preserves simplicity while maximizing performance without requiring extensive training datasets. This paper describes a way to generate a great amount of data and to use it to find a relation between a room controller and a certain room. Therefore, simulation scenarios are defined and developed that contain different room, location, usage and controller models. With parameter variation and optimization of the corresponding controller parameters a data basis is created with about 5300 entries. Accurate electrical load forecasting is of great significance to help power companies in better scheduling and efficient management. Since high levels of uncertainties exist in the load time series, it is a challenging task to make accurate short-term load forecast (STLF). In recent years, deep learning approaches provide better performance to predict electrical load in real world cases. The convolutional neural network (CNN) can extract the local trend and capture the same pattern, and the long short-term memory (LSTM) is proposed to learn the relationship in time steps. In this paper, a new deep neural network framework that integrates the hidden feature of the CNN model and the LSTM model is proposed to improve the forecasting accuracy. The proposed model was tested in a real-world case, and detailed experiments were conducted to validate its practicality and stability. The forecasting performance of the proposed model was compared with the LSTM model and the CNN model. The Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) were used as the evaluation indexes. Accurate electricity price forecasting has become a substantial requirement since the liberalization of the electricity markets. Due to the challenging nature of electricity prices, which includes high volatility, sharp price spikes and seasonality, various types of electricity price forecasting models still compete and cannot outperform each other consistently. Neural Networks have been successfully used in machine learning problems and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) have been proposed to address time-dependent learning problems. In particular, Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) are tailor-made for time series price estimation. In this paper, we propose to use multi-layer Gated Recurrent Units as a new technique for electricity price forecasting. We have trained a variety of algorithms with three-year rolling window and compared the results with the RNNs. In our experiments, three-layered GRUs outperformed all other neural network structures and state-of-the-art statistical techniques in a statistically significant manner in the Turkish day-ahead market. Many existing scene-adaptive nonuniformity correction (NUC) methods suffer from slow convergence rate together with ghosting effects. In this paper, an improved NUC algorithm based on total variation penalized neural network regression is presented. Our work mainly focuses on solving the overfitting problem in least mean square (LMS) regression of traditional neural network NUC methods, which is realized by employing a total variation penalty in the cost function and redesigning the processing architecture. Moreover, an adaptive gated learning rate is presented to further reduce the ghosting artifacts and guarantee fast convergence. The performance of the proposed algorithm is comprehensively investigated with artificially corrupted test sequences and real infrared image sequences, respectively. In the present study Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been optimized using a hybrid algorithm of Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The hybrid GA-PSO algorithm has been used to improve the estimation of electricity demand of the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The ANN-GA-PSO model uses gross domestic product (GSDP); electricity consumption per capita; income growth rate and consumer price index (CPI) as predictors that affect the electricity demand. Using the historical demand data of 25 years from 1991 till 2015 it is found that ANN-GA-PSO models have higher accuracy and performance reliability than single optimization models such as ANN-PSO or ANN-GA. In addition, the paper also forecasts the electricity demand of the state based on “as-it-is” scenario and the scenario based on milestones set by the “Vision-2023” document of the state.
