Industrial energy management is critical to ensuring efficient energy usage, market viability, and greenhouse gas emission reductions. In this study, the aim is to investigate energy management practices in paper and pulp industries (PPI) of Bangladesh. The study identifies several barriers to adopt energy management practices; "Lack of governmental attention", "Inadequate staff awareness" and "limited access to capital" are identified as the major constraints. In addition, HVAC systems and compressed air systems present higher barriers compared to electrical motor and pump systems while looking at the barriers by technology areas. On the other hand, "Owner's demand", "Commitment from the top management" and "Pressure from the customers and different non-Governmental organization" are found to be the dominant drivers of energy management in the studied PPI. Energy management practices can enhance the energy efficiency approximately by 4–5 % according to the study. With the emergence of disposable electronics, compatible safe, flexible, and recyclable power sources have become a critical challenge. Here, an ultra‐thin paper‐based iontronic power source is enabled by highly efficient translational Li+ transport within 2D nanofluidic channels of graphene oxide under a salinity gradient and the fine‐tuned interfacial redox reactions. The paper‐based source can generate volumetric power and energy densities of 438.02 mW cm−3 and 30.02 mWh cm−3, respectively. Its areal power density is 1095.05 mW cm−2, surpassing most flexible batteries. It maintains a working state when bent or even cut and can be simply recycled by incineration. By filling 2D nanofluidic inks in different pens, the power source can be drawn on paper when needed, which not only overcomes the inherent defect of self‐discharge for most batteries but also enables writing directly on any insulating substrates. Furthermore, all‐in‐one disposable electronics comprised of an energy management system (paper‐based triboelectric nanogenerator and iontronic power source) and wireless sensing system (temperature sensor with NFC circuits) are integrated onto one piece of paper by duplex printing, demonstrating the huge potential of such integratable iontronic power sources for soft, wireless, and conformable disposable electronics. Deploying renewable energy to unit design energy-efficient technologies may fulfill the additional demand of various energy-intensive industries for their sustainability and resiliency. Multiple Stage Evaporator (MSE) is one of the most energy-intensive units used to extract the water content of the weak liquor in various industries, including the paper industry. This energy intensiveness may be reduced by integrating various Energy Reduction Schemes (ERSs). Hence, this work proposes a ERSs integrated MSE model to analyze its energy efficiency. These ERSs includes Thermo-Vapor Compressor, Steam-, Feed- Split, Feed Preheater, and Flash Tanks. Further, the performance of the proposed model is investigated under two important real-time plant complexities: Boiling Point Elevation and Fouling to achieve more realistic results. The performance analysis is initiated with the formulation of a nonlinear constrained optimization problem to increase the steam economy (SE). Also, the simulation is extended to validate at two different product concentrations (52% and 65%) by employing state-of-art optimization algorithms: CONOPT, and SCA in GAMS and MATLAB respectively. The simulated results shows an increment 1.64% and 1.37% of SE for both 52% and 65% concentration of weak liquor respectively in case of CONOPT than SCA. Also, the waste heat of the condensate, feed, and product may be further utilized for the heat recovery by incorporating the flash tanks which leads to a countable energy saving. Energy management is the most prominent means of improving energy efficiency, and improved energy efficiency constitutes the cornerstone in decarbonization. For successful industrial energy management, defining accurate energy performance indicators (EnPIs) is essential. Energy-intensive industries have previously been found to have an improvement potential regarding the current monitoring of EnPIs, especially at process level. While general models for developing and implementing EnPIs exist, manufacturing industries are diverse in terms of their production processes, which is why industry-tailored models for EnPI development are needed. One major outcome of this paper is a unique model specifically tailored for kraft pulp mills. The model derives from a practice-based approach for EnPI development, building on real-life experiences from a Swedish group of companies. This paper’s developed model, and the validation of the EnPIs, further increase the understanding of the kraft pulp industry’s processes and how to apply descriptive and explanatory indicators. The developed model can potentially be generalized to other sectors.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive analysis of the carbon footprint of the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), including direct and indirect emissions from utilities, logistics and purchases, as well as a discussion about the commonly used method. Emissions are presented in three scopes (scope 1 reports direct process emissions, scope 2 reports emissions from purchased energy and scope 3 reports indirect emissions from the value chain) to identify carbon emission hotspots within the university's operations. Design/methodology/approach: The carbon footprint was calculated using physical and monetary activity data, applying a process and economic input-output analysis. Findings: TU Delft's total carbon footprint in 2018 is calculated at 106 ktCO[subscript 2]eq. About 80% are indirect (scope 3) emissions, which is in line with other studies. Emissions from Real estate and construction, Natural gas, Equipment, ICT and Facility services accounted for about 64% of the total footprint, whereas Electricity, Water and waste-related carbon emissions were negligible. These findings highlight the need to reduce universities' supply chain emissions. Originality/value: A better understanding of carbon footprint hotspots can facilitate strategies to reduce emissions and finally achieve carbon neutrality. In contrast to other work, it is argued that using economic input-output models to calculate universities' carbon footprints is a questionable practice, as they can provide only an initial estimation. Therefore, the development of better-suited methods is called for.

Background and Objectives: Today, the increased number of Internet-connected smart devices require powerful computer processing servers such as cloud and fog and necessitate fulfilling requests and services more than ever before. The geographical distance of IoT devices to fog and cloud servers have turned issues such as delay and energy consumption into major challenges. However, fog computing technology has emerged as a promising technology in this field. Methods: In this paper, service/energy management approaches are generally surveyed. Then, we explain our motivation for the systematic literature review procedure (SLR) and how to select the related works. Results: This paper introduces four domains of service management and energy management, including Architecture, Resource Management, Scheduling management, and Service Management. Scheduling management has been used in 38% of the papers. Therefore, they have the highest service management and energy management. Also, Resource Management is the second domain that has been able to attract about 26% of the papers in service management and energy management. Conclusion: About 81% of the fog computing papers simulated their approaches, and the others implemented their schemes using a testbed in the real environment. Furthermore, 30% of the papers presented an architecture or framework for their research, along with their research. In this systematic literature review, papers have been extracted from five valid databases, including IEEE Xplore, Wiley, Science Direct (Elsevier), Springer Link, and Taylor & Francis, from 2013 to 2022. We obtained 1596 papers related to the discussed subject. We filtered them and achieved 47 distinct studies. In the following, we analyze and discuss these studies; then we review the parameters of service quality in the papers, and ultimately, we present the benefits, drawbacks, and innovations of each study. Purpose: The article presents a set of indicators for assessing the effectiveness of an energy management system (EnMS) based on the authors’ own research findings. Design/methodology/approach: The work uses qualitative methods such as systematic review of literature, analysis of the content of existing documentation, participatory observation and self-observation. Findings: The literature on the subject features few publications dedicated specifically to energy management systems. Moreover, no practical solutions with a set of practical metrics to be applied in the regular process of realising energy programs and goals exist. Hence, the authors propose a model of assessment. Practical implications: The set of indicators presented in the article offers good practical value and high application and adaptation potential. The model may be applied in individual businesses in the chemical sector or as a benchmarking tool in capital groups or a group of entities demonstrating functional connections. Consisting of the universal part (indicators for goals and processes) and the sector-relevant indicators, the model may be adapted for use in other sectors through appropriate corrections for the sector-relevant criteria. Despite the tightening of energy performance standards for buildings in various countries and the increased use of efficient and renewable energy technologies, it is clear that the sector needs to change more rapidly to meet the Net Zero Emissions (NZE) scenario by 2050. One of the problems that have been analyzed intensively in recent years is that buildings in operation use much more energy than they were designed to. This problem, known as the energy performance gap, is found in many countries and buildings and is often attributed to the poor management of building energy systems. The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) has untapped potential to address this problem and lead to more sustainable buildings. This paper reviews different AI-based models that have been proposed for different applications and different buildings with the intention to reduce energy consumption. It compares the performance of the different AI-based models evaluated in the reviewed papers by presenting the accuracy and error rates of model performance and identifies where the greatest potential for energy savings could be achieved, and to what extent. The review showed that offices have the greatest potential for energy savings (up to 37%) when they employ AI models for HVAC control and optimization. In residential and educational buildings, the lower intelligence of the existing BEMS results in smaller energy savings (up to 23% and 21%, respectively). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the wake of increasing global emphasis on sustainable environmental practices, South African organisations strive to integrate green business principles into their strategies. The paper's objective was to evaluate the importance and implementation of an energy policy within the financial services sector in line with ISO50001. The paper presents findings from a quantitative non-experimental study within the South African financial services sector through a structured questionnaire. The findings showed that although the implementation of an energy policy is important, there is still a gap in the adoption of an energy policy within the financial services sector. The study further found that a notable percentage (29.5%) of respondents indicated that the energy policy did not provide sufficient guidance on energy targets and objectives. Setting an energy policy is the starting point and driving force for implementing energy management. It should be the priority of managers who have not yet done so. The HUD (Head‐Up Display) is an optical display system that is commonly used in aircraft as a flight aid to project aircraft flight information onto the display screen (often a type of transparent flat lens) directly in front of the pilot's field of view. This allows the pilot to maintain a level view while taking into account instrument parameters and external visual references in the same field of view. HUDs allow pilots to see crucial navigation, flying, and energy management data on a screen at eye level without having to glance down at their instruments or take their eyes off the outside world. It has been demonstrated that HUDs lessen the pilot workload, improve situational awareness, and decrease accidents. Thus, it is crucial to characterize optical performance and image quality accurately and precisely for aircraft HUDs. As new energy technologies mature and become more widely available, hybrid vehicles are increasingly being adopted by consumers. However, the existence of at least two power modes and energy management methods has had a significant impact on their related operating costs. This paper proposes an energy management algorithm for this type of vehicles based on an improved deep Q-Learning neural network. This way the energy consumption for hybrid vehicles could be reduced, the efficiency of their energy utilisation could be improved, and their related cost advantages could be enhanced in comparison with traditional fuel-powered vehicles. By using a mixture of multiple representative operating conditions for testing purposes, the conducted experiment confirmed that the fuel consumption per 100 kilometers for the algorithm based on double deep Q-networks under random operating conditions 1 and 2 was 4.05L/100km and 3.64L/100km, respectively. Moreover, the average fuel consumption per 100 seconds for this algorithm was 43ml/100s, which was significantly lower than that of the other three employed automotive powertrain energy management algorithms. The obtained experimental results proved that the energy management algorithm for the hybrid electric vehicle powertrain presented in this paper featured excellent energy control and management capabilities. With the rapid development of renewable energy and the increasing maturity of energy storage technology, microgrids are quickly becoming popular worldwide. The stochastic scheduling problem of microgrids can increase operational costs and resource wastage. In order to reduce operational costs and optimize resource utilization efficiency, the real-time scheduling of microgrids becomes particularly important. After collecting extensive data, reinforcement learning (RL) can provide good strategies. However, it cannot make quick and rational decisions in different environments. As a method with generalization ability, meta-learning can compensate for this deficiency. Therefore, this paper introduces a microgrid scheduling strategy based on RL and meta-learning. This method can quickly adapt to different environments with a small amount of training data, enabling rapid energy scheduling policy generation in the early stages of microgrid operation. This paper first establishes a microgrid model, including components such as energy storage, load, and distributed generation (DG). Then, we use a meta-reinforcement learning framework to train the initial scheduling strategy, considering the various operational constraints of the microgrid. The experimental results show that the MAML-based RL strategy has advantages in improving energy utilization and reducing operational costs in the early stages of microgrid operation. The Internet of things (IoT) has a variety of application domains including smart homes. A smart home is an automated intelligent home where IoT technologies are used to remotely control home appliances, manage home energy, enhance home security, and increase the comfort of home residents. On the other hand, renewable energy resources are highly speared to cover huge electricity demand. To save more energy and maximize energy efficiency, smart homes are engaged with energy management systems. Energy management and optimization solutions can help in decreasing the overall cost of energy while optimizing all operational performance. This paper presents an IoT-based optimal energy management approach depending on the Harmony Search optimization technique to save energy usage in smart homes. PV and wind renewable energy systems are used to feed the home with electricity. These on-site energy sources help smart homes to decrease their dependence on power from the electricity grid. Energy storage systems are used to maintain energy system reliability due to the inherent randomness and intermittence of solar radiation and wind speed. The proposed algorithm depends on-demand response to the price variations in the electric energy over time and applies the Time-of-Use pricing principle for controlling household appliances. IoT technology is applied to exchange data between household appliances and the control center, in addition, to communicating both energy management systems and security systems with the control center. In this paper, the IoT system is based on ZigBee wireless technology which is described as the lowest power consumed wireless technology. The algorithm is applied to a proposed building consisting of five floors, each floor contains two apartments with a total area of 200 meters for one apartment. The obtained results prove the efficacy of the proposed Harmony Search-based optimization method in saving energy and reducing electricity bills in smart homes while satisfying the required constraints. Additionally, the performance of the proposed algorithm is validated against four AI algorithms including Genetic Algorithm, Artificial Immune System, Ant Lion Optimization, and Bat Algorithm. In addition to its simplicity in programming and formulation, the conducted comparison demonstrates a similarity in the results with an advantage in the proposed algorithm in improving both the electricity cost-saving and elapsed runtime. Industrial parks, characterized by the clustering of multiple factories and interconnected energy sources, require optimized operational strategies for their Integrated Energy Systems (IES). These strategies not only aim to conserve energy for industrial users but also relieve the burden on the power supply, reducing carbon emissions. In this context, this paper introduces an optimization strategy tailored to clustered factories, considering the incorporation of carbon trading and supply chain integration throughout the entire production process of each factory. First, a workshop model is established for each factory, accompanied by an energy consumption model that accounts for the strict sequencing of the production process and supply chain integration. Furthermore, energy unit models are devised for the IES and then a low-carbon and economically optimized scheduling model is outlined for the IES within the industrial park, aiming to minimize the total operational cost, including the cost of carbon trading. Finally, case studies are conducted within a paper-making industrial park located in the Zhejiang Province. Various scenarios are compared and analyzed. The numerical results underscore the model's economic and low-carbon merits, and it offers technical support for energy conservation and emission reduction in paper-making fields. Additive manufacturing (AM) offers unique capabilities in terms of design freedom and customization, contributing to sustainable manufacturing. However, energy efficiency remains a challenge in the widespread adoption of AM processes. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of the current research on energy efficiency in AM, addressing challenges, opportunities, and future directions. Our analysis reveals a lack of standardization in the measurement and reporting of energy consumption, making it difficult to evaluate and compare the energy performance of various systems. We propose a holistic framework to address energy efficiency throughout the entire life cycle of the AM process, highlighting the importance of design optimization, material selection, advanced control systems, and energy management strategies. The paper also emphasizes the need for further research on the interactions between process parameters, along with the potential of integrating renewable energy sources into AM systems. Fuel cell hybrid systems, due to their combination of the high energy density of fuel cells and the rapid response capability of power batteries, have become an important category of new energy vehicles. This paper discusses energy management strategies in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Firstly, a detailed comparative analysis of existing PID control strategies and Adaptive Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategies (A-ECMSs) is conducted. It was found that although A-ECMS can balance the energy utilization of the fuel cell and power battery well, the power fluctuations of the fuel cell are significant, leading to increased hydrogen consumption. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved Adaptive Low-Pass Filter Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (A-LPF-ECMS). By introducing low-pass filtering technology, transient changes in fuel cell power are smoothed, effectively reducing fuel consumption. Simulation results show that under the 6*FTP75 cycle, the energy loss of A-LPF-ECMS is reduced by 10.89% (compared to the PID strategy) and the equivalent hydrogen consumption is reduced by 7.1%; under the 5*WLTC cycle, energy loss is reduced by 5.58% and equivalent hydrogen consumption is reduced by 3.18%. The research results indicate that A-LPF-ECMS performs excellently in suppressing fuel cell power fluctuations under idling conditions, significantly enhancing the operational efficiency of the fuel cell and showing high application value. Hydrogen energy represents an ideal medium for energy storage. By integrating hydrogen power conversion, utilization, and storage technologies with distributed wind and photovoltaic power generation techniques, it is possible to achieve complementary utilization and synergistic operation of multiple energy sources in the form of microgrids. However, the diverse operational mechanisms, varying capacities, and distinct forms of distributed energy sources within hydrogen-coupled microgrids complicate their operational conditions, making fine-tuned scheduling management and economic operation challenging. In response, this paper proposes an energy management method for hydrogen-coupled microgrids based on the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG). This method leverages predictive information on photovoltaic power generation, load power, and other factors to simulate energy management strategies for hydrogen-coupled microgrids using deep neural networks and obtains the optimal strategy through reinforcement learning, ultimately achieving optimized operation of hydrogen-coupled microgrids under complex conditions and uncertainties. A genetically optimized fuzzy control algorithm is used to realize the parallel hybrid system's real-time energy distribution between the engine and the electric motor. This paper first adopts fuzzy control to improve the robustness and real-time performance of the entire system. Then, a membership function optimization method based on a genetic algorithm is proposed by simulating the working state of CYCUDDS. Simulation experiments show that compared with unoptimized fuzzy control, the improved fuzzy controller can improve the vehicle's fuel economy and prevent continuous battery discharge, thereby improving battery endurance. The integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into smart grids has been considered crucial for advancing towards a sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure. Their integration is vital for achieving energy sustainability among all clean energy sources, including wind, solar, and hydropower. This review paper provides a thoughtful analysis of the current status of the smart grid, focusing on integrating various RES, such as wind and solar, into the smart grid. This review highlights the significant role of RES in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing traditional fossil fuel reliability, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability and empowering energy security. Moreover, key advancements in smart grid technologies, such as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, are explored to clarify the related topics to the smart grid. The usage of various technologies enhances grid reliability, efficiency, and resilience are introduced. This paper also investigates the application of Machine Learning (ML) techniques in energy management optimization within smart grids with the usage of various optimization techniques. The findings emphasize the transformative impact of integrating RES and advanced smart grid technologies alongside the need for continued innovation and supportive policy frameworks to achieve a sustainable energy future. The research on energy storage resource management is an important measure to cope with the present problem of uncertainty in the use of renewable energy, in order to explore the evolution of the research focus and future trend of energy storage resource management under the uncertainty of renewable energy, this paper adopts the method of bibliometric analysis, and conducts a visual analysis of the relevant 800 documents in the core collection of the Web of Science by using the CiteSpace to draw co-occurrence maps and analyze the collaborative networks of different countries/regions, institutions and authors in this field, and further conducted journal co-citation analysis, literature co-citation analysis and author co-citation analysis. The keyword co-occurrence, emergent analysis, and cluster co-occurrence analysis reveal the current research focus and trend in this field, and summarize and propose four future key focus directions: energy storage technology improvement, energy storage system integration, expansion of business models for energy storage resource management, and intelligent control of energy storage system, which provide new research paths for solving the problem of renewable energy uncertainty in the future. This systematic review paper examines the current integration of artificial intelligence into energy management systems for electric vehicles. Using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) methodology, 46 highly relevant articles were systematically identified from extensive literature research. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence, including machine learning, deep learning, and genetic algorithms, have been analyzed for their impact on improving electric vehicle performance, energy efficiency, and range. This study highlights significant advancements in energy management optimization, route planning, energy demand forecasting, and real-time adaptation to driving conditions through advanced control algorithms. Additionally, this paper explores artificial intelligence's role in diagnosing faults, predictive maintenance of electric propulsion systems and batteries, and personalized driving experiences based on driver preferences and environmental factors. Furthermore, the integration of artificial intelligence into addressing security and cybersecurity threats in electric vehicles' energy management systems is discussed. The findings underscore artificial intelligence's potential to foster innovation and efficiency in sustainable mobility, emphasizing the need for further research to overcome current challenges and optimize practical applications. Microgrids have increased in popularity thanks to both the integration of renewable energy resources and their energy distribution capability for remote locations. Moreover, the microgrids, mainly using multiple generators connected in parallel, acquire additional advantages by using both Hot-Swap and Current-Sharing techniques. This paper presents the development of a Hardware in the Loop platform to test Current-Sharing algorithms. It is reinforced that the use of a real-time simulation based on Hardware in the Loop is a viable and cost-effective alternative in the validation of controllers. The platform was developed in a graphical programming environment (LabVIEW 2015) and implemented with NI MyRIO 1900 (National Instruments Corp., Austin, TX, USA) development boards for easier reproducibility. The entire code project is openly available and provided in this paper. A system of photovoltaic energy generators was used to evaluate the performance of the HIL platform. As a result, the platform was able to reproduce a similar behavior to the photovoltaic generator, presenting average mean errors of 0.4 V and 0.2 A in its voltage and current, respectively. Additionally, the platform showed its capability to test Current-Sharing algorithms in the occurrence of Hot-Swap events. The development and use of single‐phase electric energy router (SPEER) makes the household power system operate more reliably and bring economic income at the same time. This paper presents an economic energy optimization management method of SPEER with historical data of previous day and real‐time data in the grid‐connected mode of SPEER, which can be realized by DSP. First, based on the exchange power between the SPEER and the grid, the optimal charging and discharging power of the battery to make up for the energy difference between the previous day and the real time is obtained through the particle swarm intelligence algorithm, and the optimal economic model of SPEER operation is established. Then, on the hardware experimental platform, DSP is used to realize the real‐time optimization, and the optimal economic optimization algorithm proposed in this paper is implemented and verified on hardware experimental platform.
