Electronic navigational charts (ENCs) can be compiled using existing paper charts to improve their coverage of the world's oceans. However, in the process of assigning symbols on ENCs, in some cases the software uses the same symbol for different paper chart symbols. This could ultimately compromise maritime safety. Addressing this issue, this paper describes a methodology for developing a new tool that complements the efficient production of ENCs using paper charts. First, the ENC product was produced utilising CARIS S-57 Composer. After considering the difficulties in assigning symbols through the compilation process, a new web application named SYMO EXPERT was introduced. It was developed using Firebase Realtime Database and React app. A questionnaire was prepared to collect data about the time factor and accuracy of using SYMO EXPERT. Results showed that it supports the users in selecting relevant symbols efficiently with an accuracy of up to 98%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Science as a whole is organized into broad fields, and as a consequence, research, resources, students, etc., are also classified, assigned, or invited following a similar structure. Some fields have been established for centuries, and some others are just flourishing. Funding, staff, etc., to support fields are offered if there is some activity on it, commonly measured in terms of the number of published scientific papers. How to find them? There exist well-respected listings where scientific journals are ascribed to one or more knowledge fields. Such lists are human-made, but the complexity begins when a field covers more than one area of knowledge. How to discern if a particular paper is devoted to a field not considered in such lists? In this work, we propose a methodology able to classify the universe of papers into two classes; those belonging to the field of interest, and those that do not. This proposed procedure learns from the title and abstract of papers published in monothematic or "pure" journals. Provided that such journals exist, the procedure could be applied to any field of knowledge. We tested the process with Geographic Information Science. The field has contacts with Computer Science, Mathematics, Cartography, and others, a fact which makes the task very difficult. We also tested our procedure and analyzed its results with three different criteria, illustrating its power and capabilities. This paper presents a cartography of the digital literacy academic field. Such cartography is comprised of two sections: a categorization of the field through literature review and analysis, and an exploration of its main issues through thematic and network analysis. On the one hand, five conceptual categories of digital literacies are found: functional, sociocultural, critical, transformative, and sociomaterial. On the other, main issues are described with 21 recurring themes of digital literacy and a few networks depicting its most salient matters of concern, concluding with an interpretation of these in the composition of 8 encompassing issue spaces: digital literacies conceptions and practices, digital literacy in education, access and digital divide, digital texts and literacy, websites and social networks, digital technologies at the workplace and healthcare, digital technologies users and uses, and information issues. Finally, a few paragraphs are dedicated to the limitations of categorizing and issue mapping.

This paper takes smart cartography in the context of artificial intelligence as the starting point, analyzes the impact of space-time big data on cartography, points to three possible directions for the evolu‐ tion of the map, explains the connotation of smart cartography and its characteristics of crowd-sourced da‐ ta, user participation, model coupling and visual analysis, discusses in depth the explicit and implicit knowl‐ edge representation of smart cartography, proposes the idea of establishing a map knowledge graph, and outlines a platform development paradigm based on low-code technology. Cirques are often the most representative and numerous landforms in alpine glaciated watersheds. The readily mappable and measurable nature of cirques (especially aspects and floor elevations) may yield information about the climatic, geologic, and topographic conditions that created them. These ubiquitous landforms are the foci of an alpine glacial geomorphology exercise in an intermediate-level, university geomorphology course. The exercise involves a step-by-step approach using topographic maps and remotely sensed imagery to identify and map cirques, measure cirque aspects and floor elevations, and plot and analyze the resulting data. Students interpret their mapping and analysis results in the context of published literature, ultimately incorporating all into a research paper. Student comments and self-evaluations over time show that the exercise is an effective tool for learning glacial geomorphology, topographic map, and remotely sensed image analysis, data analysis, and report writing.

Cartography played a crucial role during the partitioning of Africa. Territorial boundaries were marked on maps by the colonial powers. However, in some cases, maps were not precise regarding the sites they referred to. Some colonial powers changed original maps by shifting their territorial limits, thus staking a claim to other powers' territories. In areas where territorial questions from maps had not been sufficiently addressed during the colonial period, the distorted maps became a primary source of border disputes in the post-colonial period. The paper is built on the premise that the cartographic foundation of the Malawi-Tanzania border is knotty. Consequently, Malawi and Tanzania inherited contradictory cartography, each state selecting maps that suits her interests to defend her sovereign limits. In this study the prints were made on paper substrates, which were thought as map substrate alternatives, with 3 different surface properties at 1200 dpi by using the electrophotographic printing system. Color and gloss values of the samples were determined both before and after exposure to light for a period of 42 hours to determine the light fastness of the substrate and the print on it. The studies revealed that after the light fastness tests (i) the width of the color universe of the papers with matte surfaces is more than that of the papers with glossy surfaces, (ii) the loss of brightness of woodfree paper is higher than that of the other paper samples and (iii) the print chroma values obtained in woodfree paper is lower than those of the coated surfaces. Moreover, (iv) the delta E 00 {E_{00}} measurements revealed that all paper samples experienced different color losses in different colors, and the most significant differences in these color losses were in magenta and black. As a community composed of businesses, government agencies, universities, and research organizations that work with geospatial data, the OCG is a resource to which software developers who work with geospatial data turn for guidance and advice. This paper expands on concepts of and approaches to Land-based research through the investigation of sonic (sound) archiving strategies and how these are used as a mode of mapping meant to help preserve oral/aural forms of knowledge, experience, memory, and expressions of Land literacy (Land knowledge) through sound recording work. Building on growing fields such as sound studies, performance studies, and Indigenous studies, we look at ways to re-'map' or re-call knowledge through Land-based methods that are rooted in our interactive Land-based research project, "Sonic Coordinates."

Asset-based approaches to public service reform suggest a need for policymakers to shift attention from 'fixing' the perceived deficits of disadvantaged neighbourhoods, to recognising and building on the resources, or assets, they hold. However, these approaches have also been critiqued for interpreting assets so broadly that they effectively become meaningless, or so narrowly that they perpetuate deficit views. To counter these tendencies, a new conceptually and methodologically robust endogenous assets-mapping approach is proposed. This has been designed to enable nuanced insights into the assets young people living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods may draw upon to pursue positive educational and wider life outcomes. The approach's utility is illustrated through the case of Ayesha, a 14-year-old student with a difficult relationship with school. The paper concludes that an endogenous assets-mapping approach can help to generate more positive narratives for vulnerable learners living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods than schooling may typically enable.

In this paper the characterization of the work of art as a map of intensity, as proposed by Gilles Deleuze in his essay What the children say (gathered in Critique et clinique), will be analyzed. Art's cartographic aspect is linked to the concept of deterritorialization and the Body without Organs that the philosopher, along with Félix Guattarí, develops in Thousand Plateaus. Thus, the art-cartography represents the becoming-world of the subject that transits the Body-without-organs and the intensive differences that populate the desert of multiplicity. Each way travelled is descripted by an artistic map where the haecceities and the thresholds of flows that pierce through the disorganized bodies are portrayed. The map of intensity would be the cartographic representation of the haul travelled by a subject immersed in a hodologic space, being every line of the map a journey within an intensive space. The halfway point for the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was marked in 2023, as set forth in the 2030 Agenda. Geospatial technologies have proven indispensable in assessing and tracking fundamental components of each of the 17 SDGs, including climatological and ecological trends, and changes and humanitarian crises and socio-economic impacts. However, gaps remain in the capacity for geospatial and related digital technologies, like AI, to provide a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of the complex and multi-factorial challenges delineated in the SDGs. Lack of progress toward these goals, and the immense implementation challenges that remain, call for inclusive and holistic approaches, coupled with transformative uses of digital technologies. This paper reviews transdisciplinary, holistic, and participatory approaches to address gaps in ethics and diversity in geospatial and related technologies and to meet the pressing need for bottom-up, community-driven initiatives. Small-scale, community-based initiatives are known to have a systemic and aggregate effect toward macro-economic and global environmental goals. Cybernetic systems thinking approaches are the conceptual framework investigated in this study, as these approaches suggest that a decentralized, polycentric system—for example, each community acting as one node in a larger, global system—has the resilience and capacity to create and sustain positive change, even if it is counter to top-down decisions and mechanisms. Thus, this paper will discuss how holistic systems thinking—societal, political, environmental, and economic choices considered in an interrelated context—may be central to building true resilience to climate change and creating sustainable development pathways. Traditional and Indigenous knowledge (IK) systems around the world hold holistic awareness of human-ecological interactions—practicable, reciprocal relationships developed over time as a cultural approach. This cultural holistic approach is also known as Systemic Literacy, which considers how systems function beyond "mechanical" aspects and include political, philosophical, psychological, emotional, relational, anthropological, and ecological dimensions. When Indigenous-led, these dimensions can be unified into participatory, community-centered conservation practices that support long-term human and environmental well-being. There is a growing recognition of the criticality of Indigenous leadership in sustainability practices, as well as that partnerships with Indigenous peoples and weaving knowledge systems, as a missing link to approaching global ecological crises. This review investigates the inequality in technological systems—the "digital divide" that further inhibits participation by communities and groups that retain knowledge of "place" and may offer the most transformative solutions. Following the review and synthesis, this study presents cybernetics as a bridge of understanding to Indigenous systems thinking. As non-Indigenous scholars, we hope that this study serves to foster informed, productive, and respectful dialogues so that the strength of diverse knowledges might offer whole-systems approaches to decision making that tackle wicked problems. Lastly, we discuss use cases of community-based processes and co-developed geospatial technologies, along with ethical considerations, as avenues toward enhancing equity and making advances in democratizing and decolonizing technology. Rapid development and adoption of mobile technologies including Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) platforms have transformed teaching and learning practices over the past decade. This paper presents an analysis of how students used WhatsApp as an example of a MIM platform to organise their learning activities. Drawing on Rhizomatic Learning Theory (RLT), the study showed that WhatsApp supported students to navigate through a complex network of learning where knowledge was generated beyond the confines of the formal learning context. WhatsApp supported learners during the transition to remote learning that was introduced during the lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Further, WhatsApp use supported learners to cope well with new learning experiences and practices. The study offers insights into the perspective of learners on the use of technology during challenging and uncertain times. The insights can be useful for lecturers when developing technology strategies and teaching best practices during uncertain times.

Maps have been used for centuries to depict the diverse facets of our environment. Thematic maps depict a specific theme and help in revealing geospatial patterns and relations. The study and practice of map making has led to established cartographic design rules. Ever increasing availability of high-quality geospatial data coupled with continuously changing technologies for map making imply that one has to find the right mix between age-old principles and state-of-the-art technologies and trends when teaching thematic cartography. This paper presents a proposal on how to stimulate the creativity of students' thematic map making by describing the teaching approach and results of a map assignment for a course presented to a group of postgraduate geoinformatics students. Based on a reflection of the teaching and learning experience and an assessment of the thematic maps produced by the students, recommendations are provided for teaching today's university students how to create convincing and appealing thematic maps. An infographics summarizes the most important guidelines. Additionally, the student maps, as well as the maps revised by a trained cartographer, are available and can be used by others for teaching.

Over the last decades, the concept of map visual complexity has been extensively investigated in cartographic research. Existing approaches provide specific measures and metrics which can be utilized towards the objective examination of map effectiveness, e.g. Monmonier (1974), MacEachrean (1982), Fairbairn (2006), and Rautenbach et al. (2015). Moreover, recent studies analyze behavioral data, e.g. Cybulski (2020), Tzelepis et al. (2020), using cartographic products distributed in the internet (Schnur et al., 2018). However, map visual complexity could be affected by several factors. Among them, map scale seems to play a significant role, since it is connected to the accuracy and the level of information delivered by a cartographic product (Dumont et al., 2020). In this work, the concept of map visual complexity is connected to visual heterogeneity. A new method for quantifying visual heterogeneity of paper maps is proposed. The method is based on diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and on a random segmentation and sampling in maps with different scale levels. It is shown that by using certain segmentation size, an indicator based on Shannon entropy of the samples can be efficient in characterizing the visual heterogeneity and the scale of the maps. A low-cost optical spectrometer is utilized in order to record the spectra of 40 random segments of the maps. Reflectance spectroscopy aims at measuring the relative level of reflected light as it is compared with a reference (white surface) to record a percentage value at each wavelength and for each segment of the map. A bifurcated optical fiber has been used to deliver the reference light to the map surface (Halogen light source), while the reflected light is guided to the spectrometer (Figure 1). Segment size is defined by moving the fiber closer to the map surface and it is expected to significantly affect the estimation of the indicator. In the present experiments, the distance of the fiber from the map surface is such so that the diameter of the randomly selected segments is approximately 3 mm. The spectrometer spectral resolution is approximately 1.5 nm and, consequently, more than 240 spectral channels are recorded for each sample, since only the visible region of the spectrum is required (380 nm - 750 nm). The proposed heterogeneity indicator is the Shannon entropy, as is calculated by the probabilities to record similar reflection spectral values (relative reflected light) in the space defined by the 40 samples of each map. Since the spectral values are continuous variables, they have to be properly quantized (discretization process), before the probabilities and the entropy are calculated. In addition, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) can be also utilized in order to reduce the spectral data dimensions (channels) and to enable faster calculations. As a means to evaluate the proposed indicator, 60 different paper maps are used. Maps' production is based on the use of the standard layer of OpenStreetMap (OSM) as it is provided by the Web Map Service (WMS) of terrestris GmbH & Co. KG. OSM cartographic backgrounds are utilized in this work because they present adequately high information (content) density and diversity across different scale -- or zoom -- levels compared to other online map services, e.g. Google Maps, Here WeGo, etc. (Skopeliti and Stamou, 2019). More specifically, for the needs of this research study, twenty regions in Greece and three different map scale levels (1:k, 1:4k, & 1:40k) are examined. The produced maps are printed using the same paper quality. Box plots are applied to show the indicator with respect to the scale. The book "Current Issues in Syntactic Cartography: A crosslinguistic perspective" edited by Fuzhen Si and Luigi Rizzi provides a comprehensive study of syntactic cartography. Accurate road network information is required to study and analyze the relationship between land usage type and land subsidence, and road extraction from remote sensing images is an important data source for updating road networks. This task has been considered a significant semantic segmentation problem, given the many road extraction methods developed for remote sensing images in recent years. Although impressive results have been achieved by classifying each pixel in the remote sensing image using a semantic segmentation network, traditional semantic segmentation methods often lack clear constraints of road features. Consequently, the geometric features of the results might deviate from actual roads, leading to issues like road fractures, rough edges, inconsistent road widths, and more, which hinder their effectiveness in road updates. This paper proposes a novel road semantic segmentation algorithm for remote sensing images based on the joint road angle prediction. By incorporating the angle prediction module and the angle feature fusion module, constraints are added to the angle features of the road. Through the angle prediction and angle feature fusion, the information contained in the remote sensing images can be better utilized. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms existing semantic segmentation methods in both quantitative evaluation and visual effects. In November 2019, the Office of Coast Survey (OCS) announced its plan to discontinue the publication of all traditional raster and paper nautical charts by 2025. The rationale cites that the use of paper charts has decreased steadily over time as U.S. and international authorities began permitting the use of only electronic navigational charts (ENCs) for inland and oversea voyages. Urban villages represent informal residential areas emerging since China's rapid urbanization process. Scientific map generalization of urban villages with scientific maps aids readers in discerning their distribution and making informed decisions concerning them. However, there is still a scarcity of research on the automatic extraction and generalization of urban villages from vector data, which needs to be studied to further improve the expression of maps. To address this problem, this paper presents a methodology for the extraction and generalization of urban villages from Digital Line Graphics. Firstly, a heuristic approach is employed to analyze the atypical morphological characteristics of urban villages. Then, indices based on computational geometry and the modified Hausdorff distance are utilized to quantify these traits. Lastly, an automatic generalization principle for urban villages is offered. Fujikane shows that Hawaiian mythological chants contain specific and reliable geographical descriptions and thus constitute legitimate forms of "cartographies" or "geographies" as she labels them. It was not until the 1830s that any Western-based mapping was done by Hawaiians themselves, and earlier mapping by non-Hawaiians was not undertaken for the benefit of the people of Hawaii (Fitzpatrick, I Early Mapping of Hawaii, i 1986). Landforms of the United States (1939) by Erwin Raisz is one of the best examples of cartographic excellence depicting the landscape based on underpinning geological structure. With the block diagram as the foundation for landform mapping, this paper details the development of the landform map comparing works and lives of two of the most prominent physiographic landform cartographers, Erwin Raisz and Armin K. Lobeck, who each had Dr. Douglas Johnson as a PhD advisor at Columbia University. Comparing the 1921 Physiographic Diagram of the United States by Lobeck with the 1939 Raisz map, this paper argues that Raisz far exceeded Lobeck in the articulation of the landscape by way of the map. The cyberspace map, as one of the important tools for describing cyberspace, provides a visual representation of the dynamic and elusive nature of cyberspace. It has become a research hotspot in multiple disciplinary fields. Compared with traditional maps, cyberspace maps lack the guidance of cartography theory and have not yet formed a unified understanding. Clarifying the concept of the cyberspace map and developing a conceptual model of it could enhance people's unified understanding of cyberspace. Drawing from the perspective of cartography, this paper analyzes the current situation of cyberspace map research, first discussing the characteristics and definition of the cyberspace map and then proposing the conceptual model of a cyberspace map. This model elaborates on the types of map elements and their specific composition, the strength of their element–space association, the mapping of relationships between elements, element symbolization, and map expression. Then, based on the model proposed in this paper, typical maps are compared and analyzed, and design suggestions are provided. Finally, the entire article is summarized. This paper aims to adapt the development trend of cartography to the ternary space, clarify the basic concept of the cyberspace map, promote the development of cyberspace mapping theory, and lay the foundation for future research. Today, the marriage between cartographic language and narrative strategies has reshaped maps with the generative capability to represent the intangible historical characters and events involved in social memories following a narrative manner. Despite these advances, rather few efforts have been spared to unveil the potential of tourism maps in a narrative form. This paper seeks to rectify the gaps in this line of research by unfolding the underlying theories and cartographic design guidelines for making narrative tourism maps. In particular, a narrative cartographic design approach is demonstrated and evidenced to be practical using the case of 'Red Boat Spirit Map', a tourism map designed for Jiaxing City, one of the most well-known destinations of China's red tourism. It is believed that the theoretical instrument and cartographic design guidelines presented in our paper are particularly relevant and can be easily adapted to more general research of narrative maps. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the situation with the Oleksandrivka Mound, located on the banks of the Akkarzha River at the Black Sea. It concerns the 'excavations' of a unique site, conducted by V. Beilekchi and V. Petrenko in 1993, the materials of which have not yet been published. The scientific novelty is in the introduction of materials and a number of cartographic sources regarding the history of the study of the Oleksandrivka Mound into scientific circulation. In addition, the information on the reconstruction of the mound in 2010 and the results of excavations in 2020 are presented, as well as the prospects for publishing the materials of the 1993 'excavations' are considered. Conclusions. The problem of legal rights related to the materials of the Oleksandrivka Mound, which is being discussed in Ukraine, and more so in the Republic of Moldova, is far-fetched, since they belong exclusively to the Ukrainian state and are kept in the funds of the Institute of Archaeology and Odesa Archaeological Museum of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. As for the rights of the Head of the excavation of the mound, who had the 'Open Sheet' on them, he could have obtained a time-limited author's rights on the publication of the materials if he had fulfilled all the requirements and rules given in the instructions for the 'Open Sheet'. This refers to the mandatory submission of a notarized 'Open Sheet', a report, a diary of fieldwork, drawings, imprints, certificates on the transfer of the finds to state storage, etc. to the Field Committee at the Institute of Archaeology or to Odesa Archaeological Museum of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine after the completion of work and processing of materials. However, V. Beilekchi did not do any of that, so he actually did not obtain the author's rights. Well, more: he broke another obligation stated in all the 'Open Sheets' of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine of 1993: "It is forbidden to assign work on this 'Open Sheet' to another person". So, based on the above, V.H. Petrenko did not have any rights related to the materials of the Oleksandrivka Mound, but he also had no obligations, which is why any permissions for the use of those materials he signed are not worth the paper they are written on. Maps play a central role in the transfer of knowledge for biodiversity conservation. However, their production and reception contexts have not been sufficiently investigated so far. While critical cartography has demonstrated that maps are not objective representations of nature but are influenced by social conventions, these insights have not been fully reflected in ecological mapping practice. This paper draws on critical map theory and expands it with a critical evaluation of map visualization. By analyzing the design of biodiversity maps, our study demonstrates that the way biodiversity is visualized in maps does not adequately reflect the dynamics and interdependencies of natural systems, nor does it adequately reflect the species-specific needs. It is argued that design-led research provides relevant knowledge about evaluating maps in terms of their functionality as communication tools. In this paper, two syntactic configurations are considered that involve V-to-C movement in present-day German: Verb Second in run-of-the-mill declarative clauses and Verb Second in non-assertive embedded contexts. Along the lines of the cartographic approach and on the basis of syntactic and semantic evidence, it is proposed that in both constructs, the finite verb targets neither Force° nor the head of any other projection hosting a moved constituent in its specifier, but, rather, that it moves into the lowest head in the extended CP layer, namely Fin°. As a result of this, (at least) two types of verb raising to Fin° are to be postulated in this language: one that is triggered by discourse/information structure (V21) and one that results from mechanical movement to C elicited by an otherwise lacking lexicalization of the relevant left-peripheral head (V22). The concept of assemblage, drawing on the posthuman theorisations of Deleuze and Guattari, delineates a dynamic and new materialist approach to an event. In this approach, desires, material agency and (de)(re)territorialisation emerge as key concepts, and open ways to understand the school classroom in early childhood as a territory where lines of flight challenge the boundaries of normative education. This paper focuses on a classroom assemblage and aims to cartography the material relations between human and non-human bodies, where (de)(re)territorialisation forces are constant. We draw on diffractive ethnography in order to think-with-theory, making use of a vignette and a diagram containing its material relations. Our analysis highlights the agentic relations of matter in the assemblage, the role of desire as a dynamic force and the ever-changing flow of (de)(re)territorialisations that emerge in it. This study shows the complexity of material experience in early childhood, where desire and deterritorialisation frame creative and unexpected processes that defy the idea of education and classroom activities as linear processes controlled by adults. On the contrary, the cartography depicted in this research supports an idea of education as a space for the emergence of creative lines of flight, material relations and non-linear meaning-making. This Themed Intervention consists of short papers written by nine plenary speakers at the 2024 Annual Conference of the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers plus a paper by the Society's Cartographic Collections Manager. In this introduction, I explain why I chose mapping as the conference Chair's theme. I give a sense of how the relationship between geography and mapping has been addressed through previous conference addresses and themes. I then explore three types of cartographic genealogies. The first shows how histories of cartography traditionally took the form of family trees. The second explores disjunctures between previous phases of cartography and brings us to current definitions of mapping. The third genealogy is that of previously subjugated forms of mapping knowledge and practice which are now defining features of the field (critical quantitative; empire, race, and Indigenous; counter‐; representational and more‐than‐representational).
