The mechanical properties and failure modes of concrete are controlled by its mesoscopic material composition and structure; therefore, it is necessary to study the deterioration characteristics of tunnel lining concrete under fire from a mesoscopic perspective. However, previous studies mostly analyzed the damage and failure process from a macro-homogeneous perspective, which has certain limitations. In this paper, a thermal–mechanical coupling test device was modified to simulate the state of concrete under tunnel fire conditions. Combined with CT technology, the macroscopic properties and mesoscopic characteristics of concrete were observed. Features were obtained, such as the change in compressive strength under fire, as well as mesoscopic deterioration characteristics. The damage variable D was defined to quantify mesoscopic damage, and the link between mesoscopic deterioration characteristics and macroscopic performance was established, which can be used to predict compressive strength loss through mesoscopic characteristics. This paper presents the application of a hybrid approach for damage localization in concrete plates of arbitrary geometric shapes and a constant thickness. The hybrid algorithm utilizes fast discrete wavelet transformation, energy approach and time of flight criteria for the purpose of the localization of single- and multi-damage problems inside or on the periphery of concrete plates. A brief theoretical background of the hybrid method as well as numerical procedures for modeling the piezoelectric smart aggregate and ultrasonic wave propagation are presented. Experimental and numerical verification of the damage localization were performed on square samples/models with one or two damages and with 16 positions of piezoelectric smart actuator/sensor aggregates. After the verification of the hybrid method, a numerical simulation was performed on models with one or two damages for plates of arbitrary geometric shapes. Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that the proposed method can be applied to damage localization in concrete plates of arbitrary geometric shapes. The presented method and numerical procedure can be further used in research through varying the geometry, number and position of damages as well as the number and position of piezoelectric smart aggregates. This paper presents and investigates the properties of concrete in which a portion of the cement is substituted with non-sintered Hwangto (NSH), a readily available building material in Asia. Given the inactive nature of NSH, this study aimed to determine the optimal cement replacement ratio and quantitative strength of the material. The unit weight, compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and stress–strain of the NSH concrete (NSHC) were evaluated. Additionally, we developed a predictive model for determining compressive strength based on the regression analysis of compressive strength and UPV. The water-to-binder ratio was set to 0.41, 0.33, and 0.28, and the NSH replacement rates in the cement were set to 0%, 15%, 30%, and 45% for evaluating various strength ranges. The mechanical property measurements indicated reductions of 5.35% in unit weight, 35.62% in compressive strength, and 6.34% in UPV as the NSH was replaced. Notably, the smallest deviation from plain concrete was observed at a replacement rate of 15%. The scanning electron microscopy analysis results showed that the plain concrete exhibited a crystalloid structure; however, as the NSH replacement rate increased, the amorphous structure and pores increased while unreacted NSH particles were also observed. The X-ray diffraction analysis results demonstrate that the peak intensities for kaolinite and mullite increased as the NSH replacement rate increased, while those of C–S–H gel and CaO showed low peak intensities. Furthermore, the regression analysis concluded that an exponential function was suitable. Consequently, a compressive strength prediction model was developed, and in the error test, the NSHC model demonstrated an average error of <10%, with fewer errors at the lower compressive strength boundaries. Recycling of multi-source solid waste is of great benefit to energy conservation and environmental governance. In this paper, a new type of environmental protection concrete for railway accessory facilities was prepared from silicon-manganese slag, steel slag, fly ash and recycled macadam. Seven kinds of concrete with different mix proportions were designed. Through unconfined compressive strength, splitting, drying shrinkage and temperature shrinkage tests, the multivariate changing trends of steel slag content, cement dosage and age on the anti-interference ability of concrete were investigated. The main mechanisms of the development of mechanical and dry shrinkage properties were revealed by the hydration process of 3SR-60. The results show that 3SR-60 had better mechanical strength under the same cement dosage. The temperature shrinkage strain decreased and then increased with the rise of the proportion of waste residue, increased with the addition of cement dosage and decreased first and then increased with the descent in the temperature. The temperature shrinkage coefficient reached the lowest value at 0–10 °C. The drying shrinkage coefficient decreases with the increase in the proportion of waste residue and increases with the increase in cement dosage. The dry shrinkage strain increased rapidly during the first 8 days and became almost constant after 30 days. Cementation of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and ettringite (AFt) developed continuously and filled the internal pores of the structure, interlocking and cementing with each other, which made the microstructure develop from a three-dimensional network to a dense complex, and the macro dimension was reflected in the enhancement of the power to resist external interference. Crystalline coatings are waterproofing systems used for additional protection against increased moisture and subsurface water ingress. Even though these crystalline materials are commonly used in moisture-protective systems, they have not yet been sufficiently scientifically described. The weakest link in the chain of interaction between crystalline coatings and underlying concrete is the transition zone. To increase knowledge of the interaction between these materials, a series of experiments was prepared using a specially formulated protective mortar as the final surface layer, with the function of additionally waterproofing the structure. An experimental study of the adhesion of surface layers based on secondary crystallization to provide additional protection to concrete structures loaded with moisture or ground water exposure is presented in this paper. The series of experiments carried out consisted of an analysis of protective crystalline mortar adhesion to concrete samples of identical composition. A set of experimental measurements under the influence of various boundary conditions was carried out to determine the bond strength between two different materials. For the experimental measurements, the materials were exposed to aggressive environments for which durability verification had not yet been performed. A modified protective mortar with crystalline admixture was used as an overlayed material. This mortar worked similarly to a crystalline coating after application. Over time, there was penetration of the underlaying concrete and a secondary hydration of the cement matrix which resulted in the waterproofing of the structure. The test samples were exposed to aggressive environmental conditions in the form of freezing–thawing cycles and a carbonation process. Pull-off tests were carried out on every test sample to determine the strength of the surface layers. The penetration of the crystalline agent into the base concrete was confirmed with an SEM observation. The results of the experimental program showed that exposure to the aggressive environment further reduced the strength of the modified mortar containing the crystalline admixture. In this paper, the mechanical properties and bond strength of composite samples that consist of a conductive concrete (CC) layer and a self-consolidated concrete (SCC) layer are investigated. The bond strength study includes two parameters: (1) surface preparation and (2) casting and testing directions. The surface preparation study shows that, compared to the other methods in this study, the shear key method is the most suitable surface preparation method to fully utilize the CC in a composite. Moreover, the casting direction study reveals that the strength is heavily dependent on the type of test used along with CC's layer positioning. The flexural strength study confirms that positioning the CC mix in the tensile region is beneficial since it can increase the flexural strength of a structure because of the hybrid steel fibers included in the mixture. Finally, different codes/specifications and published theoretical results are used to predict the CC's mechanical properties, and the predictions are not as accurate as the SCC predictions, which can be attributed to the presence of conductive fillers in the CC mix. Delayed ettringite formation (DEF) is a recognised durability issue in concretes where the temperature during curing has been elevated. To address the potential risk of DEF, Australian specifications for heat and steam cured concretes, such as TfNSW B80, MRTS 70, and MRS 820, restrict the maximum concrete temperature during heat or steam curing to 70 or 80 °C (depending on the jurisdiction). The wide range of road authority specifications in Australia has led to uncertainty among precast concrete manufacturers, designers, and contractors, as there is a lack of clarity on how less durable the concretes become when they breach these temperature limits. Moreover, the role of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in mitigating DEF in the specifications is unclear. This paper addresses these concerns by reporting some of the outcomes from research carried out over the last 8 years at the University of Technology Sydney investigating the factors that raise the risk of deleterious DEF. The work indicates that the risk of DEF is low if the cements conform to Australian specifications (AS 3972 and ATIC-SP43). The risk is further reduced if fly ash (FA) is used as part of the binder composition. As the risk of DEF is low if a limit is placed on the alkali and sulphate contents in the cement and is further mitigated if FA is used to partially replace the cement, a more practical and standardised approach to heat cured concrete specifications across the Australian jurisdictions could be adopted. Epoxy resin concrete has superior mechanical properties compared to ordinary concrete, and will play an increasingly important role in urban construction. In this paper, the application effect and prospect of epoxy resin concrete in precast composite frame structures are discussed. Taking the joint surface of the old and new concrete at the end of the composite beam as the research object, three specimens were devised and fabricated. Subsequently, a horizontal cyclic load test was conducted, and the seismic performance indices were analyzed. Multiple finite element models were established to assess the influence of precast concrete strength, the diameter of the longitudinal bar of the beam, the shear span ratio, and the epoxy resin concrete post-cast area, among other factors, on the seismic performance of the beam end. Four findings indicate the following: Firstly, epoxy resin concrete, characterized by its high performance attributes, can be used as a post-cast material in precast concrete structures. Secondly, when the strength of the post-cast epoxy concrete approximates or slightly exceeds that of the precast concrete, and the ratio of longitudinal reinforcement and shear span ratio are appropriately balanced, the operational performance of the composite beam frame structure is enhanced. In addition, when post-cast epoxy resin concrete is employed in the beam-column joint area, the mechanical performance of the composite beam end in the joint area matches or even surpasses that of the structure that was cast in situ. And subsequently, the expansion of post-cast area resulted in better mechanical performance. Finally, when the area of post-cast epoxy resin concrete is a non-node area, the mechanical properties of the composite beam end are worse than the former. However, the amount of epoxy resin concrete used will be greatly reduced, and as the precast node area expands, the bearing capacity of the beam end will increase and gradually approach the cast-in situ structure, indicating that this construction scheme also has advantages. Rubberised concrete has emerged as a material of interest to the research community with the mission of creating sustainable structural members and decreasing the burden of waste tyre rubber. The potential benefits of replacing natural aggregates with rubber particles to obtain greater energy absorption and ductility are proven in the literature. To negate the reduction in capacity due to the addition of rubber particles, single- and double-skin confinements were proposed and successfully tested by researchers. Hybrid rubberised double-skin tubular columns (RuDSTCs) were recently trialled and tested by the authors. Each of these hybrid RuDSTCs had a filament-wound carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) outer tube and an inner steel tube with rubberised concrete as the sandwich material between the two tubes. To explore the axial behaviour of such a column, this paper develops a finite element modelling strategy and carries out a comprehensive parametric study of the hybrid RuDSTC with 0%, 15%, and 30% combined aggregates replaced with rubber particles. This methodology is validated by experimental results, and a good agreement is found. Hybrid RuDSTC models are developed in four groups with different material and geometric parameters, in addition to those corresponding to the experimentally tested column, to explore the effects of the thickness ratio, hollow ratio, steel tube yield strength, and CFRP tube diameter with a special focus on the transition of the characteristic bilinear stress–strain curve of the hybrid RuDSTCs. The results show the smooth transition of the stress–strain curve with increasing rubber content after the yielding of steel, which indicates better ductility of the rubberised columns. The novel hybrid RuDSTCs can provide a promising sustainable solution with greater capacity compared with their unconfined counterparts. One of the paths to CO2 emissions reduction in the concrete industry is to use low-clinker cements, providing at the same time the performance of concrete that is adequate for application in concrete structures. This paper explores the impact of the clinker replacement with high amounts of limestone powder (21–70% in the powder phase) on concrete carbonation resistance. To quantify this impact, the empirical relationship between the carbonation resistance and the compressive strength of the high-volume limestone powder concrete (HVLPC) was established. For that purpose, the regression analysis was applied on the experimental results collected from the published research. The service life analysis based on the full probabilistic approach was performed using the fib Model Code 2010 prediction model and proposed empirical relationship. The first-order reliability method (FORM) was applied to solve the limit state function of reinforcement depassivation with a reliability index equal to 1.3. The obtained minimum concrete cover depths were 40–110% higher compared to those prescribed in the current European standard EN 1992-1-1:2004 for indicative strength classes. Based on the full probabilistic analysis, recommended cover depths are given for all carbonation exposure classes, commonly applied concrete strength classes, and service lives of 50 and 100 years. The bond performance of CFRP to concrete plays a vital role in CFRP strengthening on concrete structures. In this paper, an experimental study was carried out to investigate the bond performance of CFRP to concrete with a convex-circular arc interface. The main factors were the curvature of the concrete surface and the bond length and the layers of the CFRP laminate. Based on the experimental results, the failure mode of the bond specimens, the variation of the bond capacity, the CFRP strain, and the bond–slip constitutive model are analyzed. The results showed that most of the specimens failed to peel off the interface concrete, and the bond capacity tended to increase with the increase in bond length when the bond length was within an effective value. When the interface curvature increased to 1/0.8 m, the bond capacity tended to increase due to the CFRP exerting a certain pressure on the concrete surface. The prediction formula of the bond capacity between the CFRP and concrete is proposed considering the influence of the interface curvature. The bond–slip curves are given out based on the finite differential analysis of the strain distribution of CFRP laminates. In this paper, we address the relatively underexplored topic of the bond behavior between various carbon rebars and high-strength concrete. This research aims to bridge the knowledge gap in understanding how different manufacturing processes and surface profiles of carbon fiber rods influence their bond strength with concrete. Through experimental bond tests comparing different carbon fiber rebars with varied surface profiles and manufacturing methods, we observed that the achievable bond stresses are significantly influenced by these factors. One carbon rebar variant was selected based on preliminary investigations for detailed analysis. Extensive investigations were conducted on the preferred carbon rebar. Factors such as concrete strength, bond length, and testing speed were experimentally explored. The results not only corroborate many findings from traditional reinforced concrete construction but also reveal new phenomena unique to carbon rebars. These insights are crucial for advancing the application of carbon rebars in modern construction, offering a potential solution to challenges faced in conventional concrete construction. To cater to the problems of a poor working environment, a large amount of rebound, and the high energy consumption of sprayed concrete in tunnel engineering, this paper proposes a new support scheme with a steel corrugated plate combined with mold bag concrete. Analytical solutions of stresses for steel corrugated plate and mold bag concrete were deduced based on the thin-walled cylinder, and then their strength safety factors were presented. Subsequently, a series of numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the mechanical performance of the third ring of the main structure based on the 'load-structure' 3D model. The numerical results were verified using the classical theoretical analysis and the proposed model, and then parametric studies were performed through the numerical method. Finally, field tests in a circular shaft were carried out to verify the feasibility of the structure and process and the engineering effect. The results show that the combination of steel corrugated plate and mold bag concrete is feasible and can realize rapid support technology for underground engineering, which provides a new idea for the supporting technology of underground engineering such as tunnels. The bonding properties between rubber granule–basalt fiber composite modified concrete (RBFC) and rebar greatly impact the load-carrying capacity, stiffness, and crack development of RBFC structures. In this paper, the effects of rebar diameter, bonding length, and concrete type on the bonding properties between RBFC and rebar were investigated using center pull-out tests. The bond stress–slip curve as well as the bond strength and its influencing factors were discussed in detail, and a semi-theoretical and semi-empirical model of RBFC with rebar was established. According to the findings, when rubber granules were added to concrete, its bond strength with rebar decreased. At a dosage of 5%, the bond strength was reduced by approximately 4% compared to ordinary concrete (OC) under the same conditions. It was shown that the addition of small amounts of rubber granules did not significantly reduce the bond strength. On the other hand, the incorporation of an appropriate amount of basalt fibers had a positive effect on the bond strength. An admixture of 4.56 Kg/m3 of fibers increased the bond strength by 3% compared to OC under the same conditions. The bond strength of RBFC with these two additions was improved by approximately 2% compared to OC under the same conditions. When the bonding length was 60 to 100 mm, the ultimate bond strength decreased with increasing bonding lengths. The bond strength decreased by 13.91–16.72% for every 20 mm increase in bonding length. When the rebar diameter was 12 to 16 mm, the ultimate bond stress decreased as the rebar diameter increased. The bond strength decreased by 3.96–5.94% for every 2 mm increase in rebar diameter. The segmental bond–slip constitutive model between RBFC and rebar, established using the results of the center pull-out test, can provide a reference basis for engineering applications of RBFC. The causes of cracks in concrete are varied, and regardless of their origin, these cracks invariably have a detrimental impact on the durability of concrete structures and escalate their maintenance costs. This paper presents a comprehensive review of current knowledge regarding the methods of self-healing in concrete, ranging from autogenic and improved autogenic self-healing to the autonomous self-healing of concrete. Particular emphasis is placed on the methods of autonomous concrete self-healing: the bacterial healing method, the crystalline hydrophilic additives healing method, and the capsule-based self-healing method. The hypothesis is that applying these self-healing methods could potentially prevent damages or cracks in concrete caused by freeze–thaw cycles, thereby extending the lifespan of concrete structures. The temperature field of thin-walled concrete is susceptible to the influence of the external environment, which may endanger the safety of its operation in projects. Therefore, it is essential for construction designers to conduct a full cycle experiment to clarify the influence of various environmental factors on thin-walled concrete temperature. In this paper, based on a long-term outdoor measurement experiment, the mean temperature and gradient temperature were both statistically analyzed seasonally, and two extreme gradient temperature patterns were identified and summarized. In addition, random forest regression was introduced to conduct a sensitivity analysis. It was found that the air temperature controlled the mean temperature and that solar radiation was the dominant factor affecting the gradient temperature, while the effect of wind speed was overall negligible. In addition, correlations between the concrete's temperature and environmental factors were analyzed. It was concluded that the concrete's mean temperature was positively and linearly correlated with the air temperature, while the minimum gradient temperature for the bottom shadow surface and maximum gradient temperature for the top shadow surface, respectively, had negative and positive linear correlations with the average solar radiation. It is becoming accepted that glass-fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) is a credible and effective replacement for steel in reinforced concrete (RC) to meet structural requirements whilst addressing durability concerns posed by steel over the long term. A better understanding of the bond behaviour between GFRP and concrete is essential for reliably and efficiently designing concrete structures with reinforced GFRP bars. This paper presents a parametric study of the bond behaviour of GFRP bars to concrete where the effects of the length, diameter, concrete strength, concrete cover thickness and rebar surface morphology of GFRP bars were investigated via a series of pull-out tests. The test results indicate that the bond strength of GFRP bars is predominantly influenced by their surface morphology, embedment length and diameter. On the other hand, the effects of concrete strength and cover thickness appear to have a limited impact on the bond strengths of GFRP rebars to concrete. It is shown that ribbed GFRP bars exhibit the highest bond energy of 89.4 Nmm and an average bond strength of 11.9 MPa. Moreover, the analysis of failure modes indicated the unique effect of GFRP surface morphology on failure mode. It is shown that 100% of ribbed GFRP failed due to concrete split, while 85% of sand-coated bars experienced failure due to bar slip. The reliable bond of CFRP to heat-damaged concrete is fundamental to ensuring cooperative working when the CFRP is applied for strengthening fire-damaged concrete structures. In this paper, the bond performance of hybrid-bonded (HB) CFRP to a heat-damaged concrete surface was investigated by using single shear tests. The concrete blocks were initially heat-damaged to temperatures of 100 °C, 200 °C, 300 °C, and 400 °C. The heat-damaged blocks were subsequently bonded with CFRP using the HB technique. The primary experiment parameters were the exposure temperature, the number of mechanical fasteners, and the bonded layers of CFRP. The test results show that the external-bonded (EB) and HB-CFRP joints with concrete exposed to a temperature of 400 °C were prone to fail with concrete shear-tension due to the decreased shear strength of concrete at high temperatures. The EB- and HB-CFRP joints with heat-damaged concrete anchored with no more than three fasteners present a higher bond than the reference joints with unheated concrete, while the HB-CFRP joints anchored with three fasteners provide a decreased bond capacity with the increase in exposure temperature. The utilization rate of single-layer CFRP joints with unheated concrete increased by 57.9%, 139.5%, and 136.8% with the mechanical fasteners in numbers of one, two, and three compared with the reference specimen. Accordingly, the bond capacity increased by 111.8%, 128.4%, and 186.7%. Finally, a model was proposed to estimate the bond strength of HB-CFRP joints with heat-damaged concrete. In this paper, firstly, the effects of graphene oxide on the mechanical properties of concrete were investigated. Secondly, the degradation and mechanism of the mechanical properties of graphene oxide concrete (GOC) under sulfate attack and a freeze–thaw environment were investigated. In addition, the dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOEdy) and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the GOC were measured under different environmental conditions. According to the test results, the incorporation of graphene oxide in appropriate admixtures could improve the mechanical properties of concrete in these two working environments. It is worth noting that this effect is most pronounced when 0.05 wt% graphene oxide is incorporated. In the sulfate attack environment, the MOEdy and UTS of the GOC0.05% specimen at 120 cycles decreased by 22.28% and 24.23%, respectively, compared with the normal concrete specimens. In the freeze–thaw environment, the MOEdy and UTS of the GOC0.05% specimen at 90 cycles decreased by 13.96% and 7.58%, respectively, compared with the normal concrete specimens. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed that graphene oxide could adjust the aggregation state of cement hydration products and its own reaction with some cement hydration crystals to form strong covalent bonds, thereby improving and enhancing the microstructure density. The goal of this paper is to investigate the impact of nano-materials on the mechanical and electrochemical properties of self-cleaning concrete. Nano-titanium dioxide and nano-zinc oxide were used as additives for this purpose. Additionally, a comparative study on the effect of using these materials on the self-cleaning concrete's characteristics was conducted. The dosages of nano-titanium dioxide (nps-TiO2) and nano-zinc oxide (nps-ZnO) used were 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5% and 0, 1, 2, and 3% of the weight of the cement, respectively. The results showed that the optimum compressive strength and the lowest corrosion rate were fulfilled at 2.5% of nps-TiO2 and 1% of nps-ZnO, and using 2.5% of nps-TiO2 achieved the highest improvement in the corrosion rate. However, 1% for nps-TiO2 mixtures and 1% for nps-ZnO mixtures were the best ratios for flexural strength. On the other hand, for the corrosion rate, the samples were tested at 2 and 6 months. When nps-TiO2 and nps-ZnO samples were compared to the control sample, 2.5% and 1% of nps-TiO2 and nps-ZnO, respectively, showed the largest improvement in resistance to corrosion. Also, the self-cleaning property of the samples containing nano-materials (nps-TiO2 and nps-ZnO) was tested. As the results illustrated, the self-cleaning property of the samples was increased over time due to photocatalytic degradation. Furthermore, the results of the photocatalytic tests showed that nps-TiO2 samples outperformed nps-ZnO samples overall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents experimental results on the influence of concrete composition factors on the criterion characterizing the ratio between the compressive strength of activated low-cement concrete and clinker consumption. The investigation was carried out using mathematical planning of the experiments. Experimental and statistical models describing the influence of the fly ash, activating additive (microsilica), consumption of cement and aggregates, as well as the superplasticizer on the strength of low-cement concrete under normal hardening conditions and after steaming were obtained. The values of the clinker efficiency criterion and the mineral additive cementing efficiency coefficient were calculated, and models of these parameters were obtained for the investigated concrete compositions. It was shown that the activating effect of microsilica yields an increase in ash cementing efficiency and clinker efficiency criterion in concrete. To address the issues of the brittleness, low tensile strength, insufficient bond strength, and reduced service life associated with ordinary cement concrete being used as a repair material, a water-based epoxy (WBE) and carbon-nanofiber-reinforced concrete composite repair material was designed, and the mechanical properties, bonding performance, and durability of the concrete modified using WBE and carbon fiber under various WBE contents were investigated and evaluated. In this paper, a self-emulsifying water-based epoxy curing agent with reactive, rigid, flexible, and water-soluble chains was obtained via chemical grafting, involving the incorporation of polyethylene glycol chain segments into epoxy resin molecules. The results demonstrated that a WBE has a contributing effect on improving the weak interfacial bond between the carbon fiber and concrete; moreover, the composite admixture of carbon fiber and WBE improves the mechanical properties and durability of concrete, in which the composite admixture of 1% carbon fiber and 10% WBE has the best performance. The flexural strength and chlorine ion permeability resistance of concrete were slightly reduced after more than 10% admixture, but bond strength, tensile strength, compressive strength, dry shrinkage resistance, and frost resistance were promoted. The addition of WBE significantly retards the cement hydration process while greatly improving the compactness and impermeability of the concrete. Furthermore, the combined effects of WBE and carbon fiber effectively prevented the generation and expansion of cracks. The interaction mechanism and microstructure evolution between the WBE, carbon fiber, and cement hydration were described by clarifying the mineral composition, organic–inorganic interactions, the evolution of the hydration products, and composite morphology at different scales. Carbon fiber and WBE exhibited synergistic effects on the tensile strength, ductility, and crack resistance of concrete. In the formed three-dimensional network structural system of concrete, the WBE formed an organic coating layer on the fiber surface and provided fiber protection as well as interfacial bonding reinforcement for the embedded cement particles. In this paper, we introduce a method for simulating the deformation of concrete surfaces due to weathering employing an example-based approach to replicate shape changes observed in real-world objects. A key challenge in implementing this approach is the scarcity of opportunities to measure shapes both before and after the weathering process. To overcome this limitation, we utilize concrete bricks collected from real-world environments as standardized examples, allowing for an analysis of erosion. By measuring erosion based on the estimated original shape, we correlate the characteristics of erosion with geometric features such as curvature and accessibility. We then apply this analysis to simulate new weathering effects in a given input model in alignment with its own geometric features. Modern infrastructure heavily relies on robust concrete structures, underscoring the critical need for effective monitoring to ensure their safety and durability. This paper addresses this imperative issue by introducing an innovative automated and wireless system for continuous structural monitoring. By employing embedded electrical resistivity sensors coupled with a wireless-based data transmission mechanism, real-time data collection becomes feasible. We provide a general description of the system's architecture and its application in a pilot study covering the effects of the devices on concrete properties and data transmission. The dielectric properties of concrete specimens were investigated under natural and accelerated curing/degradation and the results were used in the final design of the antenna device. Furthermore, a pilot test comprising four reinforced concrete columns was used to investigate the range of data transmission from inside to outside of the concrete, the effects of the hardware device on the compressive strength and concrete distribution in the columns, and the data transmission quality in real time under realistic exposure conditions. This paper presents a simple comparative method for evaluating the impact of concrete design on the effectiveness of repair with the electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE) process of reinforced concrete structures. This comparison covered two concretes with different types of used cement. Penetration of chloride ions to induce corrosion processes was accelerated with the electric field. However, the corrosion process itself occurred naturally. When the corrosion process was found to pose a risk to the reinforcement, the profile of chloride ion concentration was determined at the depth of concrete cover. Corrosion current intensity during migration and extraction processes of chloride ions was measured with the LPR method. Then, this serious condition for the structure was repaired with electrochemical chloride extraction. Rates of chloride extraction were determined from the derived concentration profiles. It should be noted that the critical concentration Ccrit = 0.4% at the rebar surface was reached after 21 days of the migration process. Moreover, after the same time of extraction, the concentration was reduced by 95% at the rebar surface, which could suggest that extraction rate was slower than chloride ion migration to concrete within the electric field. Using the migration coefficient for predicting the extraction time, as well as ignoring the variability of the extraction coefficient and the initial concentration over time, may result in too short or unnecessarily long extraction times. This research paper is the result of observations made during tests according to various standards carried out on behalf of industry. The article presents diffusion coefficient values calculated according to the thermodynamic migration model for twenty different concrete mixes and some selected mixes of the codified approaches known as ASTM 1202, NT BUILD 443, NT BUILD 492, ASTM 1556. The method used here, according to the thermodynamic model of migration, allows determination of the value of the diffusion coefficient after short studies of the migration of chloride ions into concrete and was described in earlier works by one of the authors. Unfortunately, when using standard methods, the values of diffusion coefficients differ significantly from each other. In each concrete, diffusion tests were carried out in the conditions of long-term natural diffusion to verify the values determined by standard methods and according to the thermodynamic model of migration. The analysis conducted for this research paper reveals that the chloride permeability test method according to the standard ASTM C1202-97 has an almost 2.8-fold greater dispersion of the obtained results compared to the thermodynamic model of migration. It was observed that the standard NT BUILD 492 has a 3.8-fold dispersion of results compared to the method with the thermodynamic model of migration. The most time-consuming method is the standard method NT BUILD 443. The largest 3.5-fold dispersion of values concerning the reference value are observed in that method. Moreover, a method based on a thermodynamic migration model seems to be the best option of all analyzed methods. It is a quite quick, but laborious, method that should be tested for a larger number of concrete mixes. A great advantage of this method is that it is promising for a wide range of concrete mixtures, both plain concrete and concrete with various additives and admixtures, as well as high-performance concrete. Temperature control is needed in the construction process of massive concrete and it can avoid the concrete cracks. Prediction of temperature development based on a hydration kinetics model can reduce the need for adiabatic temperature rise tests for concrete. However, the existing hydration kinetics model cannot accurately describe the hydration process of cement, thereby limiting the ability to further accurately predict the temperature rise of concrete based on the hydration kinetics model. This paper aims to establish a new hydration kinetics model, which is based on nucleation and growth model, and to predict the temperature development of concrete with set-controlling admixture based on this model. In this paper, the nucleation and growth of hydration products and the diffusion of free water by the modified boundary of nucleation and growth (BNG) model and the modified Fuji and Kondo's model are described. The relationship between nucleation rate and apparent activation energy and the relationship between effective diffusion coefficient and apparent activation energy are linear. However, the relationship between growth rate and apparent activation is exponential. Finally, the temperature development of concrete can be calculated by the hydration degree of the cement. The concrete strength criterion is the basis of strength analysis and evaluation under a complex stress state. In this paper, a large number of multiaxial strength tests were carried out, and many mathematical expressions of strength criteria were proposed based on the geometric characteristics and the assumption of a convex function. However, the rationality of the assumption of a convex function limits the use of these strength criteria. In particular, misjudgment will occur near the failure curve surface. Therefore, this paper does not assume the shape function of the criterion in advance. By collecting experimental data and using a machine learning method, it proposes a method of hidden function of failure curve surface. Based on 777 groups of experimental data, the random forest (RF), the back propagation neural network (BP) and the radial basis neural network (RBF) models were used to analyze and verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the method. Subsequently, the results were compared with the Ottosen strength criterion, the Guo Wang strength criterion and the Drucker–Prager (DP) strength criterion. The results show that the consistency between the strength criterion model established by the machine learning algorithm (especially random forest) and the experimental data is higher than the convex function multiaxis strength criterion of the preset failure surface shape. Moreover, the physical significance is clearer, the deficiency of the convex function failure surface hypothesis is avoided and the established multiaxial strength criterion of concrete is more universal. This paper discusses the state of the art in research on the use of textile-reinforced concretes in structural maintenance. Textile-reinforced concretes can be used in structural maintenance for various purposes, including the sealing and protection of the existing building structures, as well as for the strengthening of structures. The first-mentioned aspects are explained in this paper on the basis of example applications. A special focus is placed on the maintenance of heritage-protected structures. The development, characterization, and testing of a textile-reinforced concrete system for a heritage-protected structure are presented. Examples of the application of textile-reinforced concrete for strengthening highway pavements and masonry are also given. Under corrosive environments, concrete material properties can deteriorate significantly, which can seriously affect structural safety. Therefore, it has important engineering applications to improve the durability performance at a lower economic cost. This paper proposes a new, highly durable concrete using inexpensive construction materials such as basalt fiber, sodium methyl silicate, and inorganic aluminum salt waterproofing agent. With the massive application of sewage treatment projects, the problem of concrete durability degradation is becoming more and more serious. In this paper, five types of concrete are developed for the sewage environment, and the apparent morphology and fine structure of the specimens after corrosion in sewage were analyzed. The density, water absorption, and compressive strength were measured to investigate the deterioration pattern of concrete properties. It was found that ordinary concrete was subject to significant corrosion, generating large deposits of algae on the surface and accompanied by sanding. The new concrete showed superior corrosion resistance compared to conventional concrete. Among other factors, the inorganic aluminum salt waterproofing agent effect was the most prominent. The study found that the strength of ordinary concrete decreased by about 15% in the test environment, while the new concrete had a slight increase. A tremendous volumetric increase in waste marble powder as industrial waste has recently resulted in high environmental concerns of water, soil and air pollution. In this paper, we exploit the capabilities of machine learning to compressive strength prediction of concrete incorporating waste marble powder for future use. Experimentation has been carried out using different compositions of waste marble powder in concrete and varying water binder ratios of 0.35, 0.40 and 0.45 for the analysis. Effect of different dosages of superplasticizer has also been considered. In this paper, different regression algorithms to analyse the effect of waste marble powder on concrete, viz., multiple linear regression, K-nearest neighbour, support vector regression, decision tree, random forest, extra trees and gradient boosting, have been exploited and their efficacies have been compared using various statistical metrics. Experiments reveal random forest as the best model for compressive strength prediction with an R2 value of 0.926 and mean absolute error of 1.608. Further, shapley additive explanations and variance inflation factor analysis showcase the capabilities of the best achieved regression model in optimizing the use of marble powder as partial replacement of cement in concrete. This paper evaluates a type of geopolymer concrete that uses hemp fibres as a natural aggregate due to the various advantages offered by these woody materials. These advantages include ease of cultivation and processing and their use in the essential structure of concretes used for green construction purposes. The sampling study was prepared using an environmentally friendly inorganic binder, based on geopolymerization reactions (Si-Na). The improvement in the hemp aggregate using two different preservation methods (fresh and wet) was assessed. The type of conservation enables anaerobic reactions to take place in the structure of the hemp, in such a way as to modify the proportions of the organic compounds contained in the hemp and the morphology of the fibres. It also encourages the proliferation of cellulose nanofibrils (CNC), which enhance the mechanical results, improving plasticity and thixotropy. The hempcrete studied in this paper could be a good alternative material for sustainable, environmentally friendly construction, as much less CO2 is emitted during the production process in comparison with conventional concrete. Using wet-preserved hemp means that less water must be added to the mix during preparation of the concrete. This also helps reduce production costs, and by extension, the cost of the final product. The durability and strength of concrete in construction can be significantly compromised by permeability issues, which pose considerable challenges to its long-term effectiveness and reliability. By analyzing six selected articles from the Scopus database, this study meticulously synthesizes findings on the effectiveness of CAs in improving these essential properties of concrete. The research meticulously documents and analyzes key variables such as the CA dosage, water–cement ratio, evaluation duration, and treatment conditions, providing a thorough understanding of the factors that influence the performance of CAs in concrete. The results robustly indicate that CAs significantly reduce concrete permeability, thereby enhancing its resistance to water and other detrimental substances, and simultaneously boosts the compressive strength, leading to stronger and more durable concrete structures. In this paper, C50 high-performance concrete (HPC) containing manufactured sand was prepared. First, three different gradations of aggregates and three different types of admixtures with significant differences in specific surface area, porosity, and water ratios were used to prepare nine groups of concrete mixtures. Second, the effect of the aggregate gradation and admixture on the workability of fresh HPC and compressive strength of hydration-hardened HPC was investigated. Finally, microscopic tests were conducted to examine the hydration product pore structure (mercury injection porosimeter (MIP)), hydration product surface appearance (scanning electron microscope (SEM)), and element qualitative analysis (energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS)), and the mechanism of the C50 HPC was discussed. The results show that the types of gradation aggregates and admixtures significantly affect the workability and strength of C50 HPC. When the slump of fresh HPC is specified, the workability of the mixture can be controlled by a homemade high-performance lignin sulfonate water reducer. The aggregate gradation biased toward the median of the gradation curve can be used to prepare the C50 HPC. In this paper, the maximum compressive strength of C50 HPC is 58.3 MPa at 90 days. Advances and innovations in science and engineering have been increasingly supported by nanotechnology, and the modification of cementitious materials by nanoengineering is an expanding field. With this perspective, this paper aims to elucidate the behavior of steel bars in concrete with the addition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a function of the characteristics of the cement-based material, the dispersion techniques and dosage of CNTs, the bond tests and specimen geometry, and the rebar characteristics. To reach this proposed goal, the ProKnow-C methodology was applied to select the most relevant publications from the last ten years, and then seven articles were fully analyzed. The results of the present systematic review of the literature revealed both consolidated knowledge and gaps to be filled in future research, as the need to study the chemical effect of adding these nanomaterials for improving steel–concrete adhesion, the bonding of thin bars in concrete, and the real influence of anchorage length on the steel–concrete bond, regardless of the use of CNTs, is vital. Nowadays, a vast number of concrete structures are approaching the end of their expected service life. The need for maintenance and repair is high due to the continued deterioration of the existing building inventory and infrastructure, resulting in a large need for concrete repair in the near future. Reinforcement corrosion is the most important deterioration mechanism, causing (i) severe concrete damage (cracking along reinforcement and the spalling of the cover concrete) and (ii) loss in steel section. Therefore, appropriate repair techniques for corrosion damage are the main focus of this review paper. With the European transition towards a circular economy and with sustainable development goals in mind, it is also important to consider the environmental impact along with the technical requirements and life cycle cost. In order to improve the sustainability of concrete structures and repairs over their life cycle, life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) should be applied. However, more research efforts are needed in this field for further development and refinement. This literature review tries to adress this need by compiling existing knowledge and gaps in the state-of-the-art. A comprehensive literature survey about concrete repair assessment through LCA and LCCA is performed and showed a high potential for further investigation. Additionally, it was noticed that many differences are present between the studies considering LCA and/or LCCA, namely, the considered (i) structures, (ii) damage causes, (iii) repair techniques, (iv) estimated and expected life spans, (v) LCCA methods, (vi) life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods, etc. Therefore, due to the case specificity, mutual comparison is challenging. Brittle matrix composites such as concrete are susceptible to damage in the form of cracks. Most of the current self-repair and self-healing techniques have repair limits on crack widths or high costs of an external stimulator, or have an unfavorable effect on the composite's strength. This paper proposes a new concept of corrosion-induced intelligent fiber (CIF) and a new self-repairing system that uses the CIFs to close cracks in brittle matrix composites within a corrosive environment without external help, and without compromising the strength. The CIF comprises an inner core fiber and an outer corrodible coating that are in equilibrium, with the core fiber in tension and the corrodible coating in compression. The preparation steps and shape recovery mechanism of the CIF and the self-repair mechanism of the CIF composites are explained. Based on these concepts, this paper also describes several mechanical models built to predict the magnitude of pre-stress stored in the core fiber, and the maximum pre-stress released to the matrix composites, and the minimum length of the reliable anchor ends of CIF. The sample calculation results show that the recovery strain was 0.5% for the CIF with the steel core fiber and 12.7% for the CIF with the nylon core fiber; the maximum crack closing force provided by the CIF to concrete can be increased by increasing the amount of the CIFs in concrete and the initial tensile stress of the core fiber. The deterioration of concrete microstructures in freeze–thaw (F–T) cycles is the primary reason for the reduction in the service life of concrete. This paper reviews recent progress in the theory of damage mechanisms and damage models of concrete in F–T cycles. It is a detailed review of the salt-freeze coupling condition, microstructure testing, and models for the evolution of concrete properties that are subjected to F–T damage. Summarized in this paper are the deterioration theory of water phase transition; the mechanism of chloride-F–T and sulfate-F–T damage; the microstructure testing of hydration products, pore structure, microcracks, and interfacial transition zones (ITZ). Furthermore, F–T damage models for the macrostructure are presented. Finally, the issues that are existing in the research and outlook of concrete F–T damage are highlighted and discussed. The sustainability of the construction industry requires new perspectives on existing techniques. For example, fibre concrete has been an integral part of the construction industry for many years and its contribution to enhancing the properties and use of concrete is undeniable, but there are still some questions that need to be answered. The present paper showed the possibilities of statistical evaluation of crack mouth displacement (CMOD) tests performed on 24 fibre concrete specimens. The aim was to point out possible pitfalls and to propose measures based on statistics. The geometrical properties of all samples were determined and correlated with the results of the CMOD test. In this paper, a procedure was considered to compare two different concretes with different fibres at CMOD level. Correlations between geometry and CMOD test results were also demonstrated. Cotton textile waste (CW) and crushed bricks (CB) are wastes generated by the textile and construction industries that cause adverse effects on the environment. This paper explores the effect of adding 1, 2, 5, and 10 wt.% of CW and CB, instead of natural sand under 1 mm (50 to 100 vol.%), on the properties of concrete. The study included the analysis of workability, density, water absorption, thermal conductivity, mechanical strengths, and electron microscopy. The results show that the presence of CW and CB increased the water required to obtain the same slump value as reference, R. Concretes with CW provided better performance in terms of density, water absorption (for 1 wt.%), and splitting strength (for 1 to 2 wt.%). The 28 days of compressive strength decreased with increasing CW (33.3 MPa for R and 26.9 MPa for 2 wt.% of CW). The partial substitution of sand decreased the workability and density and increased the mechanical strength of concrete. The presence of both CW and CB decreased workability, density, and mechanical strengths. Regarding the ability of concrete to transfer heat, the addition of CW and CB decreased the thermal conductivity value (e.g., 0.32 W/(m·K) for 1 wt.% of CW compared to 0.37 W/(m·K) for reference). This paper deals with the optimization of reactive powder concrete mixtures with respect to the addition of silica fume and the type of polycarboxylate superplasticizer used. First, the properties of reactive powder concrete with eight different commercial polycarboxylate superplasticizers were tested in terms of workability, specific weight, and mechanical properties. It was found that different commercially available superplasticizers had significant effects on the slump flow, specific weight, and compressive and flexural strengths. The optimal superplasticizer (BASF ACE430) was selected for further experiments in order to evaluate the influences of silica fume and superplasticizer content on the same material properties. The results showed that the silica fume and superplasticizer content had considerable effects on the mini-cone slump flow value, specific weight, flexural and compressive strengths, and microstructure. There were clearly visible trends and local minima and maxima of the measured properties. This paper presents an experimental study on the compressive performance of longitudinal steel-fiber-reinforced polymer composite bars (SFCBs) in concrete cylinders confined by different type of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Three types of concrete cylinders reinforced with (or without) longitudinal SFCBs and different transverse FRP confinements were tested under monotonic compression. The results showed that the post-yield stiffness of SFCBs is higher when confined with high elastic modulus carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite than with low elastic modulus basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) composite. Decreasing confinement spacing did not significantly improve the compressive strength of SFCBs in concrete cylinders. The compressive failure strain of SFCBs could possibly reach 88% of its tensile peak strain in concrete cylinders confined by CFRP sheets, which is significantly higher than the value (around 50%) in previous studies. Existing design equations, which applied a strength reduction factor or a maximum compressive strain of concrete to consider the compressive contributions of SFCBs in concrete members, underestimate the load-carrying capacity of SFCB-reinforced concrete cylinders. The design equation that considers the actual compressive stress of SFCBs gives the most accurate prediction; however, its applicability and accuracy need to be verified with more experimental data. With the development of engineering technology, engineering has higher requirements for the accuracy and the scale of simulation calculation. The computational efficiency of traditional serial programs cannot meet the requirements of engineering. Therefore, reducing the calculation time of the temperature control simulation program has important engineering significance for real-time simulation of temperature field and stress field, and then adopting more reasonable temperature control and crack prevention measures. GPU parallel computing is introduced into the temperature control simulation program of massive concrete to solve this problem and the optimization is carried out. Considering factors such as GPU clock rate, number of cores, parallel overhead and Parallel Region, the improved GPU parallel algorithm analysis indicator formula is proposed. It makes up for the shortcomings of traditional formulas that focus only on time. According to this formula, when there are enough threads, the parallel effect is limited by the size of the parallel domain, and when the parallel domain is large enough, the efficiency is limited by the parallel overhead and the clock rate. After solving the problem of bank conflicts, an accelerate rate of 437.5× was realized in the subroutine of the matrix transpose of the solver. The asynchronous parallel of data access and logical operation is realized on GPU by using CUDA Stream, which can overlap part of the data access time. On the basis of GPU parallelism, asynchronous parallelism can double the computing efficiency. Compared with the serial program, the accelerate rate of inner product matrix multiplication of the GPU asynchronous parallel program is 61.42×. This study further proposed a theoretical formula of data access overlap rate to guide the selection of the number of CUDA streams to achieve the optimal computing conditions. The GPU parallel program compiled and optimized by the CUDA Fortran platform can effectively improve the computational efficiency of the simulation program for concrete temperature control, and better serve engineering computing. A three-dimensional meso-scale numerical model, which considers (1) the concrete meso-structures, (2) the bond slip between concrete internal structures and steel bars, and (3) the stripping behavior of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) cloth from the surface of the concrete component, is established to investigate the effects of concrete strength and the CFRP cloth ratio on the shear performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. On the basis of verifying the rationality of the shear failure model and the feasibility of the CFRP reinforcement simulation method, 30 orthogonally designed numerical models of six kinds of concrete strength and five kinds of CFRP cloth ratios were designed and established. Based on the numerical simulation results, this paper analyzes the damage evolution of the CFRP–concrete interface, the variation trend of CFRP strain along the height direction of beam, the failure mode, and the load-displacement curve. Results show the following: (1) With the increase of concrete strength grade and CFRP cloth ratio, the shear strength of RC beams strengthened with increases in CFRP cloth ratio, the influence range of concrete strength grade is 24–50%, and the influence range of the CFRP cloth ratio is 10–25%; (2) The improvement range decreases, and the improvement range of the concrete strength grade decreases, and the reduction range is about 20%; (3) Based on the simulation results, influences of concrete strength and CFRP cloth ratio on the shear strength of CFRP cloth-strengthened RC beams are quantitatively considered. Piezoelectric (PZT) sensors employed in the electro-mechanical impedance/admittance (EMI/EMA) technique are vulnerable to temperature variations when applied to concrete structural health monitoring (SHM). However, in practice, the ambient temperature transmitted from the air or surface to the concrete inner part is time-dependent during its monitoring process, which inflicts a critical challenge to ensure accurate signal processing for PZT sensors embedded inside the concrete. This paper numerically and experimentally investigated the thermal hysteresis effect on EMA-based concrete structure monitoring via an embedded PZT sensor. In the numerical modeling, a 3D finite element model of a concrete cube embedded with a PZT sensor was generated, where thermal hysteresis in the concrete, adhesive coat, and sensor was fully incorporated by introducing a temperature gradient. In the experiment, an equal-sized concrete cube installed with a cement-embedded PZT (CEP) sensor was cast and heated for 180 min at four temperature regimes for EMA monitoring. Experimental results, as a cogent validation of the simulation, indicated that EMA characteristics were functionally correlated to the dual effect of both heat transfer and the temperature regime. Moreover, a new approach relying on the frequency/magnitude of the maximum resonance peak in the EMA spectrum was proposed to effectively compensate for the thermal hysteresis effect, which could be regarded as a promising alternative for future applications. Crushed dolomite stone can be used as a part of concrete for hot weather. Fine dolomite as a filler is not commonly included in Portland cement. In this paper, the properties of a blended binder based on Portland cement and dolomite filler are presented. Dolomite filler was obtained from dust grains by mechanical activation in a laboratory ball mill to increase the specific surface area and its chemical activity. It is shown that the impact of mechanical activation allows to obtain dolomite filler with a median particle size of 1.4 μm and a specific surface area of 639.9 m2/kg. The content of dolomite filler in Portland cement was 10, 30 and 50%. The main properties of blended cements, i.e., the standard consistency, setting time, compressive strength, average density, and drying shrinkage, were determined on pastes. The mineralogical composition of the hydrated pastes was determined by XRD at 28 days. The presence of dolomite filler at levels higher than 10% decreases the compressive strength of blended cements. The dolomite filler decreases the water demand, shortens the setting time, and mitigates the development of drying shrinkage in the blended binder. To prevent concrete cracking, the application of dolomite filler in blended cement is relevant in hot weather due to its reduced drying shrinkage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To ensure a limited washout loss rate and the self-compaction of underwater concrete, the mix proportion design of underwater non-dispersible concrete is a key technology that has not been completely mastered. In view of this aspect, an orthogonal test study was carried out in this paper on the workability, washout resistance, and compressive strength of underwater non-dispersible concrete. Six factors with five levels were considered, which included the water/binder ratio, the sand ratio, the maximum particle size of the coarse aggregate, the content of the dispersion resistance agent, the content of superplasticizer, and the dosage of fly ash. Using a range and variance analysis, the sensitivity and significance of these factors were analyzed on the slump and slump-flow, the flow time, the washout loss rate, the pH value, and the compressive strength at the curing ages of 7 days and 28 days. The results indicated that the water/binder ratio and the content of the dispersion resistance agent were strong in terms of their sensitivity and significance on the workability and washout resistance, and the water/binder ratio and the dosage of fly ash were strong in terms of their sensitivity and significance on the compressive strength. With the joint fitness of the test results, formulas for predicting the slump-flow, washout loss rate, and compressive strength of underwater non-dispersible concrete were proposed considering the main impact factors. In this paper, a series of experimental and numerical studies were carried out to investigate the effect of multiple cracks on concrete fracture behavior. Seven groups of double-crack concrete three-point bending (TPB) experiments with different crack lengths and different crack distances were carried out. The experimental results showed that the bearing capacity of double-crack specimens was slightly larger than the standard specimen with one central crack. Additionally, with an increase in the second crack length or with a crack distance reduction, the concrete's bearing capacity increased correspondingly. Based on the experiments, a numerical meso-model was developed based on applying cohesive elements. The aggregate, mortar, interface transition zone (ITZ), and potential fracture surfaces were explicitly considered in the model. In particular, cohesive elements were used to characterize the mechanical behavior of the ITZ and potential fracture surfaces. A modified constitutive concrete model was developed by considering the potential fracture surfaces' damage relation and friction effect. The accuracy of the developed meso-model was validated through a comparison between simulation and experiments. Based on meso-models, the influence of multiple cracks on the concrete bearing capacity was investigated by analyzing the energy evolution. The analysis results showed that the bearing capacity has a linear relation with the proportion of mode II energy consumption during the fracture process, which explains why specimens with multiple cracks have a slightly larger bearing capacity than the standard specimens. In summary, this study has found that in three-point bending fracture tests primarily characterized by mode I fractures, the presence of multiple cracks near the main crack slightly enhances the load-bearing capacity of the specimens.
