Over the past 20 years, as the depth and diameter of shaft lines increased in China, the cracking and water leakage of the inner walls of frozen shafts have become increasingly severe, resulting in significant safety threats and economic losses. Understanding the stress variation patterns of cast-in-place inner walls under the combined effects of temperature and constraint during construction is a prerequisite for evaluating the crack resistance performance of inner walls and preventing water leakage in frozen shafts. The temperature stress testing machine is an important instrument for studying the early-age crack resistance performance of concrete materials under the combined effects of temperature and constraint. However, existing testing machines have shortcomings in terms of applicable specimen cross-sectional shapes, temperature control methods for concrete structures, and axial loading capacity. In this paper, a novel temperature stress testing machine suitable for the inner wall structure shape, capable of simulating the hydration heat of the inner walls, was developed. Then, a reduced-scale model of the inner wall according to similarity criteria was manufactured indoors. Finally, preliminary investigations of the temperature, strain, and stress variations of the inner wall under 100% end constraint conditions were conducted by simulating the actual hydration heating and cooling process of the inner walls. Results show that the hydration heating and cooling process of the inner wall can be accurately simulated. After approximately 69 h of concrete casting, the accumulated relative displacement and strain of the end-constrained inner wall model were −244.2 mm and 187.8 με, respectively. The end constraint force of the model increased to a maximum value of 1.7 MPa and then rapidly unloaded, causing the model concrete to crack in tension. The temperature stress testing method presented in this paper provides a reference for scientifically formulating technical approaches to prevent cracking in cast-in-place concrete inner walls. Incomplete data indicate that coal gangue is accumulated in China, with over 2000 gangue hills covering an area exceeding 200,000 mu and an annual growth rate surpassing 800 million tons. This accumulation not only signifies a substantial waste of resources but also poses a significant danger to the environment. Utilizing coal gangue as an aggregate in the production of coal-gangue concrete offers an effective avenue for coal-gangue recycling. However, compared with ordinary concrete, the strength and ductility of coal-gangue concrete require enhancement. Due to coal-gangue concrete having higher brittleness and lower deformation resistance than ordinary concrete, basalt fibre (BF) is a green, high-performance fibre that exhibits excellent bonding properties with cement-based materials, and polypropylene fibre (PF) is a flexible fibre with high deformability; thus, we determine if adding BF and PF to coal-gangue concrete can enhance its ductility and strength. In this paper, the stress–strain curve trends of different hybrid basalt–polypropylene fibre-reinforced coal-gangue concrete (HBPRGC) specimens under uniaxial compression are studied when the matrix strengths are C20 and C30. The effects of BF and PF on the mechanical and energy conversion behaviours of coal-gangue concrete are analysed. The results show that the ductile deformation of coal-gangue concrete can be markedly enhanced at a 0.1% hybrid-fibre volume content; HBPRGC-20-0.1 and HBPRGC-30-0.1 have elevations of 53.66% and 51.45% in total strain energy and 54.11% and 50% in dissipative energy, respectively. And HBPRGC-20-0.2 and HBPRGC-30-0.2 have elevations of 31.95% and 30.32% in total strain energy and −3.46% and 28.71% in dissipative energy, respectively. With hybrid-fibre volume content increased, the elastic modulus, the total strain energy, and the dissipative energy all show a downward trend. Therefore, 0.1% seems to be the optimum hybrid-fibre volume content for well-enhancing the ductility and strength of coal-gangue concrete. Finally, the damage evolution and deformation trends of coal-gangue concrete doped with fibre under uniaxial action are studied theoretically, and the constitutive model and damage evolution equation of HBPRGC are established based on Weibull theory The model and the equation are in good agreement with the experimental results. Although the energy structure has been gradually enriched in recent years, China, as the world's largest producer and consumer of coal, still accounts for more than 50% of resources. Therefore, in this paper, the high carbon fly ash raw ash (HCFARA) was mechanically activated, and the flotation was treated to obtain decarburized fly ash (DFA) with a loss on ignition of 1.18%, water demand ratio of 101% and strength activity coefficient of 74.5%. With the exception of for water demand ratio, the rest meet the national requirements for the use of Class I fly ash. The foam concrete was prepared by partially replacing cement with decarburized fly ash in different proportions and at different water-to-cement ratios (0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) in order to study its dry density, porosity, compressive strength and thermal conductivity. The results show that the porosity of foam concrete grows with the increase in water-to-cement ratio and fly ash replacement rate. In addition, the dry density and thermal conductivity of the prepared foam concrete can meet the requirements of A05 grade foam concrete (Density less than 500 kg/m3, thermal conductivity less than 0.12 W/(m·k)). Chloride penetration resistance is one of the most important performance measures for the evaluation of the durability of concrete under a chloride environment. Due to differences in theory and experimental conditions, the durability index (chloride diffusion coefficient) obtained from laboratory accelerated migration tests cannot reflect the real process of chloride ingress into concrete in the natural environment. The difference in test methods must be considered and the transfer parameter k t should be introduced into the service life prediction model when the test results of accelerated methods are used. According to the test data of coastal exposure in South China, the attenuation rule of the chloride diffusion coefficient of different cement-based materials changed with time and was analyzed in this paper. Based on the diffusion coefficient–time curve, the theoretical natural diffusion coefficients of 28 d and 56 d were deduced, which were compared with the chloride diffusion coefficients obtained from the non-steady-state rapid migration method (RCM) at the same age. Therefore, the transfer parameter k t that expounds the relationship between concrete resistance to chloride permeability under a non-stationary electrical accelerated state and natural diffusion in the marine environment can be calculated; thus, the RCM testing index can be used to evaluate the long-term performance of the concrete structure in the marine environment. Alkali-activated materials are produced by chemically polymerizing the aluminosilicate materials using alkaline activators, which can effectively lower the greenhouse-gas emissions (approximately 73%) released by ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Silicomanganese slag is a large solid waste discharged from the ferroalloy industry in China that can pollute the environment and occupy resources. In this paper, the slag in alkali-activated material was replaced with silicomanganese slag to address the disposal of silicomangaese slag. The flowability, setting times, compressive and flexural strengths, micro-structure and freeze-thaw resistance of alkali-activated silicomanganese slag concrete (AASSC) with varied substitution ratios, volume fractions of steel fibers and alkali-activated modulus (MS) were exploited. As a results the compressive strengths at 56 days of AASSC with a 10% substitution ratio of silicomanganese slag reached over 80 MPa and over 132 MPa with the 3% steel fiber dosage. AASSC still reached 91 MPa and 45 MPa with 60% and 100% substitution ratios by cooperating 2% steel fibers, respectively. When the freeze-thaw cycle number reached 300, the compressive strengths of AASSC with the replacement ratios of 10%, 60% and 100% were 84%, 74% and 51% of their original values by cooperating 2% steel fibers, respectively; AASSC with the numerous substitutions of 60% and 100% were destroyed at 600 and 300 freeze-thaw cycles, respectively. AASSC with a 10% substitution ratio and 2% steel fiber content is suitable for excellent performance, and a 60% substitution ratio can also be applied to construction for the massive utilization of silicomanganese slag. Featured Application: This paper applies to solve the shortage of building sand on the basis of principle of sustainable development. Meanwhile, this paper also provides guidance for desert sand concrete (DSC) subjected to elevated temperature and dynamic loading. In the building domain, the non-renewable resource of sand is widely used to produce concrete and mortar. The sand production has been estimated to be more than 10 billion tons with a total of 1.2 billion tons used in concrete in the last decade, which causes the gradual reduction of available building materials and impacts the environment. Since there are abundant desert sand resources in northwestern China, it would be viable to utilize desert sand as an alternative material for concrete production. In this study, an investigation of dynamic mechanical behaviors of desert sand concrete (DSC) was conducted. Various desert sand replacement ratios (0–100%) were used to replace the equivalent hill sand as fine aggregate. Experimental results showed that strain rate had a strong effect on the dynamic mechanical behaviors of DSC. The compressive strength (at room temperature) and flexural strength (after elevated temperature) increased with desert sand replacement ratio (DSRR) with the optimum replacement ratio of 40%, which was because the increase of DSRR improved the compaction of DSC. However, the effect of the low strength of desert sand was higher than that of the compaction when the DSSR exceeded 40%, so both strength values generally decreased with the increase of DSRR. Moreover, the dynamic constitutive model of DSC at room temperature was established on the basis of a nonlinear visco–elastic constitutive model (ZWT model), which can predict the stress–strain curves of DSC. The interfacial bond between cement concrete base plate (CCBP) and asphalt concrete waterproofing layer (ACWL) is a weak portion in the newly developed Chinese high-speed railway ballastless track. The interface damage caused due to fluctuating temperature load and dynamic train load is one of the most critical problems in Northern China. This paper aims to investigate the interface damage evolution process under temperature load via experimental and simulation analysis. Full-scale transverse shear tests were performed to explore the interface bond-slip mode of the adjacent ACWL and CCBP. Then, a finite element model of a ballastless track structure was built and a cohesive zone model (CZM) was utilized to model the interface damage initiation, crack propagation, and delamination process under uniform/gradient temperature load. Furthermore, the dynamic response of the ballastless track where CCBP and ACWL were partly/totally debonded was investigated and compared with the perfectly bonded structure. The results demonstrate that bilinear CZM is capable of revealing the interface damage initiation, crack propagation, and delamination process under temperature load. The interface state between the adjacent CCBP and ACWL was greatly affected by temperature changes and the interface bonding state had a great impact on the dynamic response of ballastless track. The coal gangue coarse-aggregate content in ordinary concrete should not be too large. In order to further improve the utilization rate of coal gangue coarse aggregate, this study used the principle of "strong wrapped weak" to prepare high-performance concrete. This study considered four factors, namely, water–binder (W/B) ratios, non-spontaneous combustion coal gangue (NCCG) coarse-aggregate contents, fly ash–slag mass ratios, and silica fume coating to prepare high-performance concrete. The workability, mechanical, and durability properties were studied, and the changes in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) of concrete before and after sulfate attack and freeze–thaw cycles were analyzed based on the SEM test. The life prediction of NCCG coarse-aggregate high-performance concrete was carried out based on the grey system GM(1,1) prediction model. The results show that the NCCG coarse-aggregate contents have the greatest effect on compressive strength, sulfate resistance, and frost resistance. The W/B ratio has the greatest effect on the anti-carbonization properties. Fly ash–slag mixing can obtain better durability. Considering the effect on the design service life of high-performance concrete, NCCG coarse aggregate is used to prepare high-performance concrete in North China, and the recommended content is 60%; in the Northwest and Northeast regions, the recommended content is 45%. In Shanxi Province, China, concrete foundations of substations are widely exposed to environments with sulfate erosion, which results in severe damage. There are various avenues to enhance sulfate resistance, and one promising approach involves optimizing high-performance water reducers. Chain extender, which is an integral component of a water reducer, serves as a pore-blocking agent to effectively counter sulfate erosion. This study delves into the impact of a chain extender in the water reducer on the sulfate resistance and adaptability of ordinary concrete. The assessment begins with gauging the sensitivity of concrete to sulfate erosion, utilizing a 0–1 scoring method. Comparable conditions are maintained, allowing for a direct comparison between concrete with and without chain extender based on predefined criteria. A score of 1 denotes superior performance, while a score of 0 indicates a poorer performance. Following the evaluation of each criterion, scores are aggregated by the water reducer type, with higher scores signaling superior adaptability. The findings highlight that chain extender enhances the internal porosity of concrete, resulting in a more compact microstructure, heightened impermeability, and improved resistance to sulfate erosion. Its influence on mixture performance, however, is marginal. From an erosion product standpoint, using the semi-immersion method, chemical erosion predominates in the immersion zone, while both chemical and physical erosion are observed in the alternate wet–dry zone. Employing a 0–1 scoring method, Water Reducer 3 (with chain extender) scores 20 points, whereas Water Reducer 3#–1 (without chain extender) scores 4 points. Taking into consideration all factors, the chain extender demonstrates excellent adaptability to ordinary concrete. To validate the effectiveness of the 0–1 scoring method, it is applied to assess fly ash and slag double-blended concrete. Water Reducer 3 (with chain extender) scores 13 points, while Water Reducer 3–1 (without chain extender) scores 10 points. Coal gangue (CG) represents a huge amount of industrial solid waste in China, and usually is used as a coarse aggregate to produce low-strength coal-gangue-based concrete. In this paper, in order to prove the possibility to obtain a higher-strength concrete with a higher CG utilization rate, reactive powder concrete (RPC) with coal gangue as a sand replacement at different replacement ratios was studied. RPC samples were prepared by replacing natural river sand (RS) with CG sand at different CG/RS weight ratios from 0–100% at intervals of 25%. Mechanical tests were carried out, and the microstructure features of RPC samples at 28 days were characterized. The test results showed that strong back shrinkage of strength existed. On days 7 and 14, the flexural strengths of samples with CG/RS replacement ratios of 0–75% fluctuated around the mean value. Strengths of samples with a CG/RS replacement ratio of 100% dropped off. However, on day 28, the flexural strengths of samples with CG were all lower than the strengths of samples on days 7 and 14. The flexural strengths and compressive strengths of the RPC with a CG/RS replacement ratio of 100% on day 14 were 14.09 MPa and 37.03 MPa, respectively, which decreased to 6.42 MPa and 28.44 MPa, respectively, on day 28. Compared with natural river sand, CG sand reduced the working performance, compressive strength, and flexural strength of RPC. Microscopic analysis showed that on day 28, increasing the CG replacement ratio could inhibit cement hydration, weaken the interface transition zone, and lead to the degradation of the RPC's performance. High titanium heavy slag is one kind of solid waste that exists in large amounts in the southwest of China. In this paper, this high titanium heavy slag is used as natural pre-wetted material in concrete because of its porous structure. Three kinds of aggregates are used in this concrete. The first one is natural limestone and river sand. The second one is dry slag fine aggregate and coarse aggregate. The third one is pre-wetted coarse slag aggregate and dry slag fine aggregate. The strength, dry shrinkage, autogenous shrinkage, relative humidity, pore size distribution, stress–strain relationship, micro-hardness and chloride penetration of concrete composed of the above three aggregates are tested in this study. The results show that pre-wetted slag aggregate is a suitable internal curing material. The concrete with pre-wetted slag aggregate shows higher strength, lower shrinkage and smaller porosity. The water absorbed in the slag aggregate can be released effectively to increase the relative humidity, accelerate hydration, improve porosity and increase the interface strength. This paper presents an experimental and analytical investigation on the performance of partial penetration welds used to adjoin steel plates in irregular shaped multicell concrete filled steel tubes. The experimental program of this study is designed based on an actual implementation of such members as mega columns in a super high rise building in China. A total of six specimens are designed with different plate arrangements for the purpose of testing the performance of the partial penetration welds at different locations of the specimen. The designed specimens are tested under different load procedures and directions; this is achieved by placing them in vertical and slantwise manners between two loading plates which impose monotonic and cyclic actions. The failure conditions of each of the tested specimens are presented and discussed in detail and are based on the conclusions drawn from the experimental observations; the partial penetration weld at the corner of the tested specimens is found to be the most vulnerable. To facilitate large scale analysis, a finite element model constructed by the finite element analysis program ABAQUS is verified against experimental results. The evaluation of the stress at the partial penetration welded corner is carried out following an empirical procedure, which is adopted due to the complexity of the problem domain. The adopted procedure consists of two steps: the first one is to initially evaluate the stress based on an existing method in the literature, and the second one is to fit the results of the initial evaluation with the finite element model results based on parametric and regression analysis. After performing regression analysis, a formula to predict the weld stress is concluded, and the results of the proposed equation are found to be satisfactory when compared with the finite element model results. Freeze-thaw (F-T) damage is the major factor destroying the bond behavior of reinforced concrete in the cold areas of China. The bond behavior between recycled fiber recycled concrete (RFRC) and reinforcement after F-T cycles was investigated in this paper. The pull-out tests were undertaken with the replacement rate (0, 50%, and 100%) of recycled aggregates (RA) and volume content (0, 0.12%, and 0.24%) of recycled fibers (RFs) as test variables. The results demonstrate that the F-T cycles will reduce the bond strength between RFRC and reinforcement. Bond strength decreases by 69.41% after 150 cycles. Moreover, RF can improve the bond strength between RFRC and reinforcing steel. Bonding strength increases by 11.35% with the addition of 0.12% RF. A simplified two-phase bond-slip model between RFRC and reinforced steel after F-T cycles was eventually established, and it correlated well with the experimental results. Polymer-modified concrete and fiber concrete are two excellent paving materials that improve the performance of some concrete, but the performance of single application material is still limited. In this paper, polymer-modified concrete with strong deformation and fiber concrete with obvious crack resistance and reinforcement effect were compounded by using the idea of composite material design so as to obtain a high-performance pavement material. The basic mechanical properties of high-content hybrid fiber–polymer-modified concrete, such as workability, compression, flexural resistance, and environmental durability (such as sulfate resistance) were studied by using the test regulations of cement concrete in China. The main results were as follows. (1) The hybrid fiber–polymer concrete displayed reliable working performance, high stiffness, and a modulus of elasticity as high as 35.93 GPa. (2) The hybrid fiber–polymer concrete had a compressive strength of 52.82 MPa, which was 31.2% higher than that of the plain C40 concrete (40.25 MPa); the strength of bending of the hybrid concrete was 11.51 MPa, 191.4% higher than that of the plain concrete (3.95 MPa). (3) The corrosion resistance value of the hybrid fiber–polymer concrete was 81.31%, indicating its adjustability to sulfate attack environments. (4) According to cross-sectional scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, the hybrid fiber–polymer concrete was seemingly more integrated with a dense layer of cementing substance on its surface along with fewer microholes and microcracks as when compared to the ordinary concrete. The research showed that hybrid fiber–polymer concrete had superior strength and environmental erosion resistance and was a pavement material with superior mechanical properties. Durability of concrete is of great significance to prolong the service life of concrete structures in corrosive environments. Aiming at the economical and environment-friendly production of concrete by comprehensive utilization of the supplementary cementitious materials made of industrial byproducts, the resistances to chloride penetration, sulfate attack, and frost of high-performance concrete were studied in this paper. Fifteen concretes were designed at different water–binder ratio with the changes of contents of fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF), ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), and admixture of sulfate corrosion-resistance (AS). The compressive strength, the total electric flux of chloride penetrability, the sulfate resistance coefficient, and the indices of freezing and thawing were measured. Results indicate that, depending on the chemical composition, fineness, and pozzolanic activity, the supplementary cementitious admixtures had different effects on the compressive strength and the durability of concrete; despite having a higher fineness and pozzolanic activity, the GGBS gave out a negative effect on concrete due to a similar chemical composition with cement; the SF and FA presented beneficial effects on concrete whether they were used singly with GGBS or jointly with GGBS; the AS improved the compressive strength and the sulfate corrosion resistance of concrete. In general, the grade of durability was positively related to the compressive strength of concrete. Except for the concretes admixed only with GGBS or with GGBS and FA, others had super durability with the compressive strength varying from 70 MPa to 113 MPa. The concretes with water to binder ratio of 0.29 and total binders of 500 kg/m3 admixed with 7% FA + 8% SF + 8% GGBS or 7% FA + 8% SF + 8% GGBS + (10~12)% AS presented the highest grades of resistances specified in China codes to chloride penetration, sulfate corrosion, and frost, while the compressive strength was about 100 MPa. Aiming at the problem that ordinary cement concrete is subjected to damage in heavy saline soil areas in China, a new type of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete is prepared by using the gelling properties of magnesium oxychloride cement in this study, and the erosion resistance of the synthesized magnesium oxychloride cement concrete in concentrated brine of salt lakes is studied through the full immersion test. The effects of concentrated brine of salt lakes on the macroscopic, microscopic morphology, phase composition and mechanical properties of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete are investigated by means of macro-morphology, erosion depth, SEM, XRD and strength changes. The salt erosion resistance mechanism of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete is revealed. The results demonstrate that under the environment of full immersion in concentrated brine of salt lakes, there is no macroscopic phenomenon of concrete damage due to salt crystallization, and the main phase composition is basically unchanged. The microscopic morphology mostly changes from needle-rod-like to gel-like. Due to the formation of a new 5·1·8 phase on the surface layer and the increase in compactness, its compressive strength has a gradual increase trend. Based on the engineering application of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete, it is further confirmed that magnesium oxychloride cement concrete has excellent salt erosion resistance and good weather resistance, which provides theoretical support for future popularization and application. Antimony (Sb) is a trace element applied widely in modern industry. A large number of tailing solid wastes are left and accumulated in the mining area after purifying the precious antimony from the antimony ores, causing serious pollution to the environment. The major aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of utilizing antimony tailing coarse aggregate (ATCA) as a complete substitute for natural coarse aggregate (NCA) in high-strength concrete. Concrete specimens with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% ATCA replacing the NCA in conventional concrete were prepared for evaluating the performance of ATCA concrete. The investigators find that ATCA concrete has good workability, and the mechanical properties and long-term behavior (shrinkage and creep) of ATCA concrete with all replacement levels are superior to those of NCA concrete. The durability indices of ATCA concrete, such as the frost-resistant, chloride permeability, and resistance to carbonation, are better than those of NCA concrete. While the alkali activity and cracking sensitivity behavior of ATCA concrete seem to be decreased, nevertheless, the difference is not significant and can be neglected. The researchers demonstrate that all of the control indices of ATCA concrete meet the requirements of the current industry standards of China. In this research, the sustainable applications for utilizing antimony tailing coarse aggregate (ATCA) in concrete is investigated. Comprehensive verifications were performed by a series of experiments on the characteristic of ATCA and the toxicity risks of concrete. Firstly, a real case study of utilization of ATCA as a complete substitute for natural coarse aggregate (NCA) in high strength concrete was conducted. Then, chemical composition of ATCA was tested. It is demonstrated that the essential mineral is SiO2 and the lithology of ATCA is quartzite. The mechanical properties, coarse quality of ATCA, and NCA were studied and compared. The compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and compressive elastic modulus of ATWR are 221.51 MPa, 5.93 MPa, and 3.33 × 104 MPa, which are 1.31, 2.22, 1.40 times of that of NR, respectively. All of the quality control indices of ATCA meet the requirements of the current industry standards of China. Finally, the toxicity risks of ATCA concrete were investigated. It is illustrated that the leaching of main heavy metals including Sb, As, Hg, Pb, Cd, and Zn in the ATCA concrete under different pH conditions are below the regulatory limits. Damage to concrete structures with gypsum-contaminated aggregate occurs frequently. Aggregates in much of the southern part of China are contaminated with gypsum. Therefore, in this study, the effects of using different quantities of gypsum-contaminated aggregate on the expansion and compressive strength of concrete were investigated over a period of one year. Two groups of concrete were designed with the gypsum-contaminated aggregate containing different parts of fine and coarse aggregate, respectively. The SO3 contents were 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 3%, 5%, and 7% by weight of aggregate. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to analyze the change in mineral composition over time. The microstructure was also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The results showed that significant expansion and great loss in compressive strength did not occur in concrete if the content of SO3 lay below 1.5% and 3% in fine and coarse aggregates, respectively. The concentration of sulfate ions in concrete was not enough to form new a phase of gypsum. During the process of internal sulfate attack, the content of gypsum decreased and the content of ettringite increased. Ettringite was the main reason for the expansion damage of concrete. Additionally, the fracture mode of internal sulfate attack on concrete was the crack extension from gypsum to paste; finally, the aggregate separated from the paste. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
