Recent research in the field of oil and gas geochemistry has focused on the catalytic role of minerals in geological history. Thermal simulation experiments are considered a valuable means of studying the formation and transformation of hydrocarbons. In this paper, we review the catalytic mechanisms, processes, and various arguments for different types of minerals in thermal simulation experiments from the perspective of mineral additives. We focus on two categories: (1) minerals that provide direct catalysis, such as clay minerals, alkali metals, carbonate rocks, and some transition metal elements, and (2) minerals, such as serpentine, that promote aqueous hydrogen and act as the material basis, as well as the radioactive element uranium. Post-collisional potassic-ultrapotassic volcanic rocks are widely developed in the Lhasa block, Qinghai-Tibet region. In this paper, it was observed for the first time that dilute alkali elements–Li, Rb, and Cs–exhibit supernormal enrichment in the research data of numerous potassic-ultrapotassic volcanic rocks in the Lhasa block. At the same time, there are few studies on the genesis of enrichment. Currently, 568 sets of published volcanic rock data and 8 sets of measured data in the Lhasa block are sorted in detail, and the genesis of dilute alkali element enrichment is explained by means of geochemical research methods. It is believed that the high degree of magmatic fractionation of potassic-ultrapotassic volcanic rocks in the Lhasa block is the main reason for the abnormal enrichment of dilute alkali elements such as Li, Rb, and Cs. The abnormal enrichment area is mainly located in the central and western parts of the Lhasa block with an age range of 25–13 Ma. The discrimination range of Zr/Hf and Nb/Ta with a high degree of differentiation of potassic-ultrapotassic volcanic rocks in the Lhasa block is divided by analogy with the research results of highly fractionated granites, which provides a reference for the study of the supernormal enrichment of dilute alkali elements in potassic-ultrapotassic volcanic rocks in this area. As one of the main fossil fuels globally, coal can be enriched with a variety of critical metal elements in specific geological conditions. This paper investigates the mineral compositions and concentrations of major and minor element oxides and trace elements in the No. 9 coal from the Xinyuan mine of the northern Qinshui coalfield, China, and discusses the modes of occurrence and enrichment mechanisms of critical metal elements such as Li, Ga, Th and REY. The mineral compositions of the No. 9 coal are primarily represented by clay minerals and quartz, with a small amount of calcite, siderite, anatase, etc. The major element oxides in the No. 9 coal are dominated by SiO2 and Al2O3. Compared with world hard coal, the No. 9 coal of the Xinyuan mine is rich in Li (CC = 8.00) and Th, slightly enriched with Pb, Sc, Ga, Y, La, Ce, Tb, Dy, Er, Yb and Hg, and depleted in Mn, Co, Ni, Rb, Cs and Tl. The critical metal elements such as Li, Ga, Th and REY that enriched No. 9 coal mainly occur in aluminum silicates. The genetic type of the critical metal elements in the No. 9 coal from the Xinyuan mine is source rock-controlled type. The critical metal minerals and solutions from the source area were transported to the study area by the action of water. Geochemical baselines are crucial to explore mineral resources and monitor environmental changes. This study presents the first Laos geochemical baseline values of 69 elements. The National-scale Geochemical Mapping Project of Lao People's Democratic Republic conducted comprehensive stream sediment sampling across Laos, yielding 2079 samples collected at 1 sample/100 km2, and 69 elements were analyzed. Based on the results of LGB value, R-mode factor analysis, and scatter plot analysis, this paper analyzes the relationship between the 69 elements and the geological background, mineralization, hypergene processes and human activities in the study area. The median values of element contents related to the average crustal values were: As, B, Br, Cs, Hf, Li, N, Pb, Sb, Zr, and SiO2, >1.3 times; Ba, Be, Cl, Co, Cr, Cu, F, Ga, Mn, Mo, Ni, S, Sc, Sr, Ti, Tl, V, Zn, Eu, Al2O3, Tot.Fe2O3, MgO, CaO, and Na2O, <0.7 times; and Ag, Au, Bi, Cd, Ge, Hg, I, In, Nb, P, Rb, Se, Sn, Ta, Th, U, W, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and K2O, 0.7–1.3 times. R-mode factor analysis based on principal component analysis and varimax rotation showed that they fall into 12 factors related to bedrock, (rare earth, ferrum-group, and major Al2O3 and K2O elements; mineralization–Au, Sb, and As) and farming activities–N, Br, S, and C). The Yamrang Pegmatite in the Ikhabu Pegmatite Field, Eastern Nepal is Nepal's primary source of aquamarine. This paper reports detailed mineralogy and whole rock granite and pegmatite geochemistry, and major and trace element data for alkali feldspar and muscovite in order to classify the aquamarine-bearing Yamrang Pegmatite, elucidate beryl-saturation processes and evaluate potential geochemical exploration tools for beryl-pegmatites. Five internal mineralogical/textural zones were identified in the Yamrang Pegmatite; zone 1 (saccharoidal albite); zone 2 (blocky perthitic microcline); zone 3 (muscovite–microcline–quartz); zone 4 (beryl-quartz), and zone 5 (miarolitic cavities). Zones 1–4 represent the magmatic stage, while zone 5 formed during the hydrothermal stage of pegmatite genesis. Spectacular aquamarines are recovered from miarolitic zone 5, while beryl saturation is found in zones 3, 4, and 5. Based on beryllium (Be) content, Be partition among co-existing minerals at the magmatic stage is beryl > muscovite > tourmaline > alkali feldspar > quartz. In contrast, the sequence at the hydrothermal stage is beryl > muscovite > albite > tourmaline > quartz. The Be content in rock-forming minerals decreases from pegmatite margin to core, and tourmaline could have played a significant role in Be enrichment processes in the marginal pegmatite zone. High temperature, a low degree of fractionation, and the dominance of Be-compatible mineral phases such as muscovite, calcium-rich alkali feldspar and tourmaline resulted in beryl undersaturation in marginal zones. However, low temperature, high fractional crystallization, and low abundance of Be-compatible mineral phases resulted in beryl saturation in inner zones. The strongly peraluminous nature, low total REE content (<500 ppm), mineral assemblage of beryl, tourmaline, spessartine, columbite-tantalite, depletion of Ba, Nb, and enrichment of Pb, Rb, Cs in the primitive mantle normalized multi-element plots suggest that the beryl-bearing Yamrang Pegmatite corresponds to the LCT pegmatite family. Alkali feldspar with K/Rb values of 30–150, Rb ~3000 ppm, Cs >100 ppm, and muscovite, with K/Rb ranging 18–50, Rb ~6000 ppm, Cs > 500 ppm, and Ta > 65 ppm in inner zones (3–5), indicate that the Yamrang Pegmatite is an intermediate-fractionated, beryl-type rare-element (REL) pegmatite. Younger granite bodies form two arches, the western and the eastern (WA, EA), which extend from the south northwards from the Meatique, ophiolitic group-island arc rocks, to the large older granite outcrop to the north. This paper concerns the feasibility of exploration in the El-Erediya-Ria El-Garah-El-Gidami-El-Missikat Y Gr regions. Fieldwork and remote sensing, together with geochemical, petrochemical, and mineralogical studies, are used to show the controlling factors, routes, and the origins of the deposits. Remote sensing is used to delineate the different rock units. Normal and strike–slip NW, NNE faults, veins, fractured ENE shear zones, and alteration zones of magmatic-hydrothermal fluids are discussed. Granites are considered using petrochemical diagrams as resources. These rocks are categorized as syeno- and alkali feldspar granites. Geochemical binary relationships recognized the granites are highly fractionated calc-alkaline-altered Monzo-, syeno-, and alkali feldspar granites formed in the active continental margin. The observed positive Ga vs. Cu, Zn, and Ni correlations are used for epithermal-magmatic-hydrothermal polymetallic veins and mineralized greisen zones. Negative Cu vs. Mo correlation patterns show probable Mo-porphyry deposits in the deeper zones at the contact point between porphyritic perthite and perthite granitic El-Erediya mass. The Zr/Sr between 1.65 to 2.93 plus fluorites in El-Missikat and up to 5.48 plus fluorites in El-Erediya show both U-poor at El-Missikat and U-rich deposits at El-Erediya. The recorded U, Th, Cu, and Pb vertical zoning sequence of deposition differentiates U aureole and deposit zones. The estimated lateral zoning sequences of deposition of these elements define the centers of U deposits. Pathfinders for the deposit of the examined area include the positive Fe2O3 vs. Mg O and Fe2O3 vs. Ca O correlations, and also negative Rb/Sr vs. K/Na and Rb vs. Sr ones, can be applied to future prospecting for similar U-F-Au-W-Mo deposits in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. The mineralogical studies of rare-element (REL) pegmatites are important for unraveling the ore-forming process and evaluating REL mineralization potential. The Chinese Altai orogenic belt hosting more than 100,000 pegmatite dykes is famous for rare-metal resources worldwide and diverse REL mineralization types. In this paper, we present the results of EMPA and LA-ICP-MS for muscovite from the typical REL pegmatite dykes of the Chinese Altai. The studied pegmatites are Li-Be-Nb-Ta, Li-Nb-Ta, Nb-Ta, Be-Nb-Ta, Be and barren pegmatites. The Li+ accompanied with Fe, Mg and Mn substitute for Al3+ at the octahedral site in muscovite from the REL pegmatites, and the substitution of Rb by Cs at the interlayer space is identified in muscovite from the Be pegmatites. The P and B contents increase with evolution degree and the lenses from the Nb-Ta pegmatite are produced at late fluid-rich stage with high fluxes (P and B). The enrichment of HFSE in muscovite indicates a Nb-Ta-Sn-W rich pegmatite magma for the Be-Nb-Ta pegmatite. From barren pegmatite, beryl-bearing zone, to spodumene-bearing zone, the evolution degrees of pegmatite-forming magmas progressively increase. In the Chinese Altai, the possible indicators of muscovite for REL mineralization types include Rb (ca. 400–600 ppm, barren pegmatite; ca. 1200–4000 ppm, Be pegmatite; >4500 ppm, Li pegmatite), Cs (ca. 5–50 ppm, barren pegmatite; ca. 100–500 ppm, Be pegmatite; >300 ppm, Li pegmatite) and Ge (<3 ppm, barren pegmatite; ca. 4–6 ppm, Be pegmatite; ca. 6–12 ppm, Li pegmatite) coupled with Ta, Be (both <10 ppm, barren pegmatite) and FeO (ca. 3–4 wt%, Be pegmatite; ca. 1–2.5 wt%, Li pegmatite). The plots of Nb/Ta vs. Cs and K/Rb vs. Ge are proposed to discriminate barren, Be- and Nb-Ta-(Li-Be-Rb-Cs) pegmatites. The Li, Be, Rb, Cs and F concentrations of forming liquid are evaluated based on the trace element compositions of muscovite. The high Rb and Cs contents of liquid and lower Be contents than beryl saturation value indicate that both highly evolved pegmatite magma and low temperature at emplacement contribute to beryl formation. The liquids saturated with spodumene have large variations of Li, possibly related to metastable state at Li unsaturation–supersaturation or heterogeneous distribution of lithium in the system. The Cuonadong deposit is the first large scale Sn-W-Be rare polymetallic deposit located in southern Tibet, China, where beryl is the main beryllium-bearing mineral. In this paper, the beryl crystals in the pegmatitic and hydrothermal vein orebody from the Xianglin area of the Cuonadong deposit are the research objects, marked as Beryl-I and Beryl-II, and they are investigated by EPMA, LA-ICP-MS and in situ micro-X-ray diffraction (XRD). Data by EPMA and LA-ICP-MS reveal that beryls from this area are alkaline beryls, among which Beryl-I is composed of Li-Cs beryl, and Beryl-II is composed of Na beryl and Na-Li beryl, indicating that beryls have undergone noticeable alkali metasomatism during formation. The Cs/Na ratio in Beryl-I ranges from 0.10 to 0.44, and the Mg/Fe ratio is almost 0, showing that Beryl-I is formed under high-differentiation evolution conditions and is rarely affected by hydrothermal transformation, whereas the Mg/Fe ratio in Beryl-II ranges from 2.73 to 17.31, and the Cs/Na ratio is nearly 0, indicating that Beryl-II has been obviously affected by late hydrothermal metasomatism. In situ XRD analysis shows that both Beryl-I and Beryl-II are t-beryl, and the c/a ratio of Beryl-I (1.0010–1.0012) is slightly higher than that of Beryl-II (1.0005–1.0008), which may also reflect the transition from magmatism to hydrothermal metasomatism in the late stage of pegmatitic magmatism. Based on comprehensive analysis, we believe that the precipitation of Beryl-I is mainly caused by the emplacement of highly fractionated magma containing Be to the top of the rock mass or surrounding rock, the melt-fluid undercooling, and the crystallization of volatile-bearing minerals (such as tourmaline and fluorite). Moreover, the Be-bearing ore-forming fluid has further migrated upward along the near north–south faults formed in the middle Miocene (16–15 Ma), during which Beryl-II precipitates owing to the hydrothermal water mixing, the ore-forming fluid cooling, and large amounts of crystallization of volatile-bearing minerals (mainly fluorite). Therefore, it can be concluded that beryl mineralization largely reflects the process of magmatic–hydrothermal mineralization. Because of a large number of mineralized areas with the similar metallogenic backgrounds to the Cuonadong deposit in the Himalayan region, it has great potential to be a new globally significant rare metal metallogenic belt. The South China Block, a region renowned for its extensive granite distribution and rich metal deposits, serves as a natural laboratory for the study of granite-related mineralization. This research focuses on the Tongtianmiao granite pluton, which is located at the intersection of the Qin-Hang and Nanling metallogenic belts and has been confirmed as a significant lithium mineral resource. Despite its discovery and ongoing development, the lithium-rich Tongtianmiao pluton has been understudied, particularly concerning its petrogenesis, which has only recently come to the forefront of scientific inquiry. By integrating an array of petrogeochemical data with geochronological studies derived from zircon and monazite dating, this study provides insights into the magmatic processes related to lithium enrichment in the Tongtianmiao granites. The Tongtianmiao granites are classified as A-type granites characterized by high SiO2 contents (69.18–78.20 wt.%, average = 74.08 wt.%), K2O + Na2O contents (4.59–8.34 wt.%, average = 6.86 wt.%), A/CNK > 1.2, and low concentrations of Ca, Mg, and Fe. These granites are enriched in alkali metals such as Li, Rb, and Cs but are significantly depleted in Ba, Sr, and Eu. They show no significant fractionation of light or heavy rare-earth elements but present characteristic tetrad effects. A finding of this study is the identification of multiple ages from in situ zircon U–Pb dating, which implies a prolonged history of magmatic activity. However, given the high uranium content in zircons, which could render U–Pb ages unreliable, emphasis is placed on the monazite U–Pb ages. These ages cluster at approximately 172.1 ± 1.1 Ma and 167.9 ± 1.6 Ma, indicating a Middle Jurassic period of granite formation. This timing correlates with the retreat of the Pacific subduction plate and the associated NE-trending extensional fault activity, which likely provided favorable conditions for lithium enrichment. The study concluded that the Tongtianmiao granites were formed through partial melting of crustal materials and subsequent underplating by mantle-derived materials, and were contaminated by strata materials. This process resulted in the formation of highly differentiated granite through magmatic differentiation and external forces. These findings have significant implications for understanding the petrogenesis of lithium-rich granites and are expected to inform future exploration endeavors in the Tongtianmiao pluton. The Jurassic Period was a significant phase of variable organic matter accumulation in paleo-shelf areas of the southern Tethys (Egypt). Reconstructing the paleoredox conditions, paleoclimate, and weathering intensity, along with the role of terrigenous sediment flux and mineralogical maturity, is important for understanding basin infill history and prevalent paleoenvironmental conditions. Here, inorganic geochemical data are presented from the Middle Jurassic Khatatba Formation and two samples from the underlying Ras Qattara and the overlying Masajid formations in the Jana-1x well, Shushan Basin, Western Desert. Twenty-four (24) whole-rock samples were analyzed for their major and trace element composition and carbonate content. The Khatatba Formation represents one of the major hydrocarbon source rocks in the North Western Desert, Egypt. Redox conditions were assessed based on enrichment factors of redox-sensitive elements Mo, V, U, and Co. Results revealed that the Khatatba Formation was deposited under predominant anoxic bottom and pore water conditions, in contrast to the oxic settings that were prevalent during the deposition of the Ras Qattara and Masajid formations. Continental weathering intensity and paleoclimate were reconstructed based on several proxies, such as the chemical index of alteration (CIA), K2O/Rb, Rb/Sr, Ln(Al2O3/Na2O), and Al/K ratios, indicating that the studied succession was deposited during alternating phases between weak and moderate weathering intensity under arid and warm-humid climates, respectively. Periods of enhanced continental weathering were associated with high values of clastic ratios such as Si/Al, Ti/Al, and Zr/Al, suggesting increased terrigenous sediment supply during intensified hydrological cycling. A dataset of >1190 published compositional analyses of muscovite from granitic pegmatites of varying mineralogical types was compiled to reevaluate the usefulness of K-Rb-Li systematics of muscovite as a tool for distinguishing mineralogically simple pegmatites from pegmatites with potential Li mineralization. Muscovite from (i) common, (ii) (Be-Nb-Ta-P)-enriched, (iii) Li-enriched, and (iv) REE- to F-enriched pegmatites contain Li contents that vary between 10 and 20,000 ppm depending on the degree of pegmatite fractionation. Common pegmatites are characterized by low degrees of fractionation as exhibited by K/Rb ratios ranging from 618 and 25 and Li contents generally being <200 ppm but infrequently as high as 743 ppm in muscovite. Moderately fractionated pegmatites with Be, Nb, Ta, and P enrichment contain muscovite having K/Rb ratios mostly between 45 and 7 plus Li contents between 5 to >1700 ppm. Muscovite from moderately to highly fractionated Li-rich pegmatites exhibit a wide range of K/Rb ratios and Li values: (i) K/Rb = 84 to 1.4 and Li = 35 to >18,100 ppm for spodumene pegmatites, (ii) K/Rb = 139 to 2 and Li = 139 to >18,500 ppm for petalite pegmatites, and (iii) K/Rb = 55 to 1.5 and Li = 743 to >17,800 ppm for lepidolite pegmatites. Pegmatites that host substantial REE- and F-rich minerals may carry muscovite with K/Rb ratios between 691 to 4 that has Li contents between 19 to 15,690 ppm. The K/Rb-Li behavior of muscovite can be useful in assessing the potential for Li mineralization in certain granitic pegmatite types. The proposed limits of K/Rb values and Li concentrations for identifying spodumene- or petalite-bearing pegmatites as part of an exploration program is reliable for Group 1 (LCT) pegmatite populations derived from S-type parental granites or anatectic melting of peraluminous metasedimentary rocks. However, it is not recommended for application to Group 2 (NYF) pegmatites affiliated with anorogenic to post-orogenic granitoids with A-type geochemical signatures or that derived by the anatexis of mafic rocks that generated REE- and F-rich melts. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a technology for compositional analysis that is particularly effective for light elements, particularly Li, which is a critical commodity for emerging green technologies. This study undertook analysis by handheld LIBS of muscovite from the drill core, outcrop, and soil on the Carolina Lithium Prospect (CLP) in Gaston County, North Carolina (USA), which lies within the Carolina Tin-Spodumene Belt (CTSB). Abundances of the alkali elements Li, K, and Rb were determined for more than 130 muscovites from the Li-rich pegmatites to track the degree of pegmatite fractionation as a pathfinder for spodumene mineralization. Across the CTSB and including the CLP, muscovite Li contents vary over an order of magnitude, ranging from 0.04 to 0.74 wt. %, with their K/Rb ratios varying between 63 and 8, features that together document the highly evolved character of pegmatites within the CTSB district. On average, muscovite Li contents are greater in spodumene-bearing pegmatites at 0.21 ± 0.12 wt. % than for common quartz-feldspar pegmatites at 0.14 ± 0.08 wt. %. Although overlapping substantially in the middle portions of their distributions, muscovite K/Rb ratios are biased toward low values for spodumene-bearing pegmatites (X - = 21 ± 6) compared to those for quartz-feldspar pegmatites (X - = 33 ± 9). This study provides a framework for the use of LIBS analysis of muscovite in outcrop, drill core, and soil samples as an analytical tool for in-field and on-site geochemical analysis during Li pegmatite exploration and prospect evaluation. The fluids in of pegmatite rare metal deposits are generally rich in rare metal elements and volatiles (B, P, F, H2O, CO2, etc.), and they have a high capacity for dissolving and migrating rare metals. The Dakalasu No. 1 rare metal pegmatite vein is located in northwest China's Altay orogenic belt. Previous studies have indicated that it is a small- to medium-sized beryllium-niobium-tantalum deposit. It showed significant mineral assemblage zonations from the rim to the core, and the mineralizing fluids define a volatile-rich NaCl-H2O-CO2 ± CH4 system. In this contribution, beryl and quartz, which are widely developed in each mineral association and textural zone, were selected for fluid inclusion research through detailed petrographic investigation, microthermometry, and LA-ICP-MS analysis. Petrographic results show that at least three types of fluid inclusions are developed in each mineral textural zone. They are CO2-rich inclusions (type I), gas-liquid two-phase inclusions (type II), and daughter mineral-bearing inclusions (type III), respectively. Additionally, minor melt inclusions (type IV) are visible in the beryl from the rim zone. Microthermometric measurements showed that the homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions in the rim zone was concentrated between 242 °C and 293 °C, with an average of 267 °C, and the salinity was between 7.2–10.3 wt% NaCleqv, with an average of 8.6 wt% NaCleqv. In comparison, the temperature of the core zone was in the range of 225–278 °C, with an average of 246 °C, and the salinity focused between 6.0–7.7 wt% NaCleqv, with an average of 7.1 wt% NaCleqv. The quantitative analysis of individual inclusions by LA-ICP-MS revealed that Li, B, K, Zn, Rb, Sb, Cs, and As were relatively enriched in the rim zone. In contrast, the core zone showed a decreasing trend in trace elements such as Li, B, K, Rb, and Cs. The CO2 content in the fluid exhibited the same decreasing trend from the rim to the core zone, indicating that volatile components such as CO2 played an essential role in the migration and enrichment of rare metal elements. The melt-fluid immiscibility is likely to be a necessary mechanism for significantly enriching rare metals in the Dakalasu No. 1 pegmatite dyke. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The No. 5 pegmatite vein is the most evolved and well mineralized vein in the Renli deposit, with beryl being the most important beryllium mineral. The vein represents one of the most important gem-quality aquamarine mines at Renli. In this study, beryl crystals from the No. 5 pegmatite vein were examined by EMPA (electron microprobe analysis), ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry), XRD (diffraction of X-rays), FTIR (fourier transform infrared spectrometer), and Raman analyses. Field and petrographic observations showed that most beryl crystals are euhedral to subhedral with light to medium blue color. EMPA analyses indicated that the main chemical compositions of beryl are close to the ideal values, with relatively low Fe (0.222–0.690 wt%) and alkali metal (0.280–0.820 wt%) contents. Geochemical and spectroscopic analyses indicated that cations replacement in beryl is relatively simple. The substituting cations of beryl in the octahedral Al site include mainly: Mg2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Cr3+, Ti4+, and the excess Si. The tetrahedral Be site is mainly replaced by Li. Alkali metals in channel (esp. Na) serve as a charge compensator. According to the Fe-Mg-alkali and Li-Cs contents, the beryls from No. 5 pegmatite belong to the low Li-Cs and low Fe-Mg-medium alkali beryl groups. The Kaimuqi area in the Eastern Kunlun Orogen (EKO) contains many lherzolite, olivine websterite, gabbro and diorite intrusions, and new zircon U–Pb dating, Lu–Hf isotope and whole-rock geochemical data are presented herein to further confirm the Late Triassic mafic–ultramafic magmatism with Cu–Ni mineralization and to discuss the petrogenesis and geodynamic setting. Zircon U–Pb dating shows that the Late Triassic ages, corresponding to 220 Ma and 222 Ma, reveal the mafic–ultramafic and dioritic magmatism in Kaimuqi, respectively. Zircon from gabbro has εHf(t) values of −3.4 to −0.2, with corresponding TDM1 ages of 994–863 Ma. The mafic–ultramafic rocks generally have low SiO2, (Na2O+K2O) and TiO2 contents and high MgO contents and Mg# values. They are relatively enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and depleted in heavy REEs (HREEs) and high-field-strength elements (HFSEs), indicating that the primary magma was derived from the metasomatized lithospheric mantle. The diorites show sanukitic high-Mg andesite properties (e.g., MgO = 2.78%–3.54%, Mg# = 50–55, Cr = 49.6–60.0 ppm, Sr = 488–512 ppm, Y = 19.6–21.8 ppm, Ba = 583–722 ppm, Sr/Y = 23.5–25.4, K/Rb = 190–202 and Eu/Eu* = 0.73–0.79), with LREEs and LILEs enrichments and HREEs and HFSEs depletions. We suggest that the primary Kaimuqi diorite magma originated from enriched lithospheric mantle that was metasomatized by subduction-derived fluids and sediments. The Kaimuqi mafic–ultramafic and dioritic intrusions, with many other mafic–ultramafic and K-rich granitic/rhyolitic rocks in the EKO, formed in a dynamic extensional setting after the Palaeo-Tethys Ocean closure. Pegmatitic deposits of critical metals (e.g., Li, Ta, Be) are becoming increasingly significant, with growing interest in understanding metal enrichment processes and potential vectors to aid the discovery of new resources. In southeast Ireland, the Leinster pegmatite belt comprises several largely concealed Li-Cs-Ta albite-spodumene-type pegmatites. We carried out detailed mineralogical characterization and whole-rock geochemical analyses of six drill cores intersecting pegmatite bodies and their country rocks. Exomorphic halos 2–6 m thick, enriched in Li, Rb, Be, B, Cs, Sn and Ta, are identified in both mica schists and granitic rocks adjacent to spodumene pegmatites. Metasomatism in wall rocks visible to the naked eye is restricted to a few tens of centimeters, suggesting country rock permeability plays a key role in the dispersion of these fluids. We propose that halos result from the discharge of rare element-rich residual fluids exsolved near the end of pegmatite crystallization. Halo geochemistry reflects the internal evolution of the crystallizing pegmatite system, with residual fluid rich in incompatible elements accumulated by geochemical fractionation (Be, B, Cs, Sn, Ta) and by auto-metasomatic resorption of spodumene and K-feldspar (Li, Rb). The possibility of identifying rare-element enrichment trends by analysis of bedrock, stream sediments and soils brings opportunities for mineral exploration strategies in Ireland and for similar albite-spodumene pegmatites worldwide. Emerald is among the most valuable gems in the world. Over the past decade, its commercial value and geographic origin have been the focus of gemological and geological research. In this study, emerald samples from India were examined by UV-Vis-NIR, FTIR, Raman spectra analysis, EPMA, and LA-ICP-MS. Hexagonal three- and multi-phase inclusions are first reported in Indian emeralds, containing gas bubbles (CO2 or CO2 + CH4), water or liquid mixtures of H2O + CO2, and solid phases inclusions (rounded crystals of siderite and dolomite, platelets of phlogopite, and magnesite). Mineral inclusions in Indian emeralds typically included phlogopite, quartz, talc, aragonite, and albite. The representative UV-Vis-NIR spectra show a distinct Fe absorption band, and one of the more typical characteristics of Indian emeralds is that the absorption strength of Fe3+ (369 nm) and Fe2+ (851 nm) is greater than that of Cr3+ (426, 606, 635, and 680 nm). Infrared spectra show that the absorption of type II H2O is stronger than that of type I H2O. LA-ICP-MS results show that Indian emeralds contain high alkali metals (10,503–16,964 ppmw; avg. 13,942 ppmw), moderate Fe (2451–4153 ppmw; avg. 3468 ppmw), low V (37–122 ppmw; avg. 90 ppmw), and the content of Cr (106–6310 ppmw) varies in a wide range. The Dakalasu No.1 pegmatitic rare-element deposit is a representative of Be-Nb-Ta pegmatites in Altai, Xinjiang, China. Beryl is the most important beryllium-carrying mineral in Dakalasu No.1 pegmatite. To constrain the concentration mechanism of Be, we conducted a study of the textural relationships and chemical compositions (major and trace elements) of beryl, along with microthermometry and Raman spectroscopy on beryl-hosted fluid inclusions. Two generations of beryl were recognized. The early beryl I was formed in the magmatic stage, whereas the late beryl IIa and IIb were formed in the magmatic-hydrothermal stage. Lithium and Cs contents increased from beryl I, beryl IIa, to beryl IIb, whereas Mg and Rb contents decreased. Scandium, V, and Ga contents of beryl IIa are similar to beryl IIb, but different in beryl I. Titanium is enriched in beryl IIa. The high FeO contents and Na/Cs ratios of beryl (I, IIa, and IIb) reveal the low degree of differentiation evolution of the Dakalasu No.1 pegmatite. Two types of melt inclusions and four types of fluid inclusions were identified in beryl IIa, IIb, and associated quartz. The microthermometry results indicated that beryl II is formed at 500 °C–700 °C, and 200 MPa–300 MPa. The Dakalasu No.1 pegmatite melt is enriched in volatiles, such as B, F, and CO2, evidenced by a large amount of tourmaline in the wall zone, the occurrence of a variety of tiny cryolite (Na3AlF6) inclusions, and CO2-rich fluid inclusions in beryl IIa. The enrichment mechanism of Be may be related to the crystallization of beryl at highly undercooled states of melt, and melt–melt–fluid immiscibility during the evolution and differentiation of the melt. An effective method using hydrofluoric and sulfuric acid was proposed to enhance the leaching of lithium from α-spodumene, without calcination that is subjected to 1000 °C for phase transformation. The thermodynamic feasibility of the reactions was firstly verified. Dissolution conditions were tested to maximize the leaching efficiency of lithium and with efficient utilization of hydrofluoric acid (HF) served as evaluation criteria. The results showed that 96% of lithium could be transferred into lixivium with an ore/HF/H2SO4 ratio of 1:3:2 (g/mL/mL), at 100 °C for 3 h. Due to the fact that HF molecules were the main reaction form, the dissolution behaviors were theoretically represented and investigated by dissolution in HF/H2SO4. When combined with chemical elements analyses and characterizations, the results of the dissolution behaviors revealed that α-spodumene and albite were preferentially dissolved over quartz. Insoluble fluoroaluminates, such as AlF3, cryolite (Na3AlF6) and cryolithionite (Na3Li3Al2F12), were generated and might be further partially dissolved by H2SO4. Fluorosilicates, such as K2SiF6, Na2SiF6, or KNaSiF6, were also generated as a part of the insoluble residues. This work provides fundamental insight into the role of HF/H2SO4 played in the dissolution of α-spodumene, and sheds light on a novel and promising process to efficiently extract lithium. Minerals from mantle xenoliths in the Zapolyarnaya pipe in the Upper Muna field, Russia and from mineral separates from other large diamondiferous kimberlite pipes in this field (Deimos, Novinka and Komsomolskaya-Magnitnaya) were studied with EPMA and LA-ICP-MS. All pipes contain very high proportions of sub-calcic garnets. Zapolyarnaya contains mainly dunitic xenoliths with veinlets of garnets, phlogopites and Fe-rich pyroxenes similar in composition to those from sheared peridotites. PT estimates for the clinopyroxenes trace the convective inflection of the geotherm (40–45 mW·m−2) to 8 GPa, inflected at 6 GPa and overlapping with PT estimates for ilmenites derived from protokimberlites. The Upper Muna mantle lithosphere includes dunite channels from 8 to 2 GPa, which were favorable for melt movement. The primary layering deduced from the fluctuations of CaO in garnets was smoothed by the refertilization events, which formed additional pyroxenes. Clinopyroxenes from the Novinka and Komsomolskaya-Magnitnaya pipes show a more linear geotherm and three branches in the P-Fe# plot from the lithosphere base to the Moho, suggesting several episodes of pervasive melt percolation. Clinopyroxenes from Zapolyarnaya are divided into four groups according to thermobarometry and trace element patterns, which show a stepwise increase of REE and incompatible elements. Lower pressure groups including dunitic garnets have elevated REE with peaks in Rb, Th, Nb, Sr, Zr, and U, suggesting mixing of the parental protokimberlitic melts with partially melted metasomatic veins of ancient subduction origin. At least two stages of melt percolation formed the inclined PT paths: (1) an ancient garnet semi-advective geotherm (35–45 mW·m−2) formed by volatile-rich melts during the major late Archean event of lithosphere growth; and (2) a hotter megacrystic PT path (Cpx-Ilm) formed by feeding systems for kimberlite eruptions (40–45 mW·m−2). Ilmenite PT estimates trace three separate PT trajectories, suggesting a multistage process associated with metasomatism and formation of the Cpx-Phl veinlets in dunites. Heating associated with intrusions of protokimberlite caused reactivation of the mantle metasomatites rich in H2O and alkali metals and possibly favored the growth of large megacrystalline diamonds. A new mineral species of the mica group, fluorluanshiweiite, ideally KLiAl1.5□0.5(Si3.5Al0.5)O10F2, has been found in the Nanyangshan LCT (Li, Cs, Ta) pegmatite deposit in North Qinling Orogen (NQO), central China. Fluorluanshiweiite can be regarded as the F-dominant analogue at the A site of luanshiweiite or the K-dominant analogue at the I site of voloshinite. It appears mostly in cookeite as a flaky residue, replaced by Cs-rich mica, or in the form of scale aggregates. Most individual grains are <1 mm in size, with the largest being ca. 1 cm, and the periphery is replaced by cookeite. No twinning is observed. The mineral is silvery white as a hand specimen, and in a thin section, it appears grayish-white to colorless, transparent with white streaks, with vitreous luster and pearliness on cleavage faces. It is flexible with micaceous fracture; the Mohs hardness is approximately 3; the cleavage is perfect on {001}; and no parting is observed. The measured and calculated densities are 2.94(3) and 2.898 g/cm3, respectively. Optically, fluorluanshiweiite is biaxial (–), with α = 1.554(1), β = 1.581(1), γ = 1.583(1) (white light), 2V(meas.) = 25° to 35°, 2V(calc.) = 30.05°. The calculated compatibility index based on the empirical formula is −0.014 (superior). An electron microprobe analysis yields the empirical formula calculated based on 10 O atoms and 2 additional anions of (K0.85Rb0.12Cs0.02Na0.03)Σ1.02[Li1.05Al1.44(□0.47Fe0.01Mn0.02)Σ0.5] Σ2.99(Si3.55Al0.45) Σ4O10F2, which can be simplified to KLiAl1.5□0.5(Si3.5Al0.5)O10F2. Fluorluanshiweiite is monoclinic with the space group C2/m and unit cell parameters a = 5.2030(5), b = 8.9894(6), c = 10.1253(9) Å, β = 100.68(1)°, and V = 465.37(7) Å3. The strongest eight lines in the X-ray diffraction data are [d in Å(I)(hkl)]: 8.427(25) (001), 4.519(57) (020), 4.121(25) (021), 3.628(61) (1 12), 3.350(60) (022), 3.091(46) (112), 2.586(100) (1 30), and 1.506(45) (312). Alkali feldspars with diffuse reflections that violate C-centering symmetry were reported in Na-bearing adularia, orthoclase and microcline. TEM results indicate elongated nano-precipitates with intermediate composition of KNa(Si6Al2)O16 cause the diffuse reflections. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates ordered distribution of K and Na atoms in the nano-phase with Pa symmetry. K and Na atoms are slightly off special positions for K atoms in the orthoclase structure. Formation of the intermediate nano-phase may lower the interface energy between the nano-phase and the host orthoclase. Previously reported P21/a symmetry was resulted from an artifact of overlapped diffraction spots from the nano-precipitates (Pa) and host orthoclase (C2/m). Smectites are a major type of clay minerals. Hydrothermally synthesized smectites have become a major research topic because of the unstable quality or excessive impurity of natural smectites. The high-phase purity and yield of hydrothermally synthesized smectites are vital in advanced industries and materials applications. In this study, a Taguchi orthogonal array was integrated with eight factors to avoid biased experimental results, thus creating relatively robust factor portfolios to investigate the effects of temperature, alkali sources, and the magnesium (Mg)/aluminum (Al) ratio on the phase purity and yield of hydrothermally synthesized smectites. The synthesized environment was mainly established using trioctahedral smectites based on the formula Na2x(Al2(1−x)Mg2x□)Si4O10(OH)2X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement were used for the quantitative analysis of the products' mineral facies and calculating the synthesized smectites' phase purity and yield. The Taguchi method was employed to calculate each factor's effect on the product quality. The results indicated that among the numerous factor portfolios, a relatively high temperature, ammonia solution as the alkali source, and a relatively high Mg/Al ratio were conducive to enhanced phase purity and yield of synthesized smectites. The Postmasburg Manganese Field (PMF), Northern Cape Province, South Africa, once represented one of the largest sources of manganese ore worldwide. Two belts of manganese ore deposits have been distinguished in the PMF, namely the Western Belt of ferruginous manganese ores and the Eastern Belt of siliceous manganese ores. Prevailing models of ore formation in these two belts invoke karstification of manganese-rich dolomites and residual accumulation of manganese wad which later underwent diagenetic and low-grade metamorphic processes. For the most part, the role of hydrothermal processes and metasomatic alteration towards ore formation has not been adequately discussed. Here we report an abundance of common and some rare Al-, Na-, K- and Ba-bearing minerals, particularly aegirine, albite, microcline, banalsite, sérandite-pectolite, paragonite and natrolite in Mn ores of the PMF, indicative of hydrothermal influence. Enrichments in Na, K and/or Ba in the ores are generally on a percentage level for most samples analysed through bulk-rock techniques. The presence of As-rich tokyoite also suggests the presence of As and V in the hydrothermal fluid. The fluid was likely oxidized and alkaline in nature, akin to a mature basinal brine. Various replacement textures, particularly of Na- and K- rich minerals by Ba-bearing phases, suggest sequential deposition of gangue as well as ore-minerals from the hydrothermal fluid, with Ba phases being deposited at a later stage. The stratigraphic variability of the studied ores and their deviation from the strict classification of ferruginous and siliceous ores in the literature, suggests that a re-evaluation of genetic models is warranted. New Ar-Ar ages for K-feldspars suggest a late Neoproterozoic timing for hydrothermal activity. This corroborates previous geochronological evidence for regional hydrothermal activity that affected Mn ores at the PMF but also, possibly, the high-grade Mn ores of the Kalahari Manganese Field to the north. A revised, all-encompassing model for the development of the manganese deposits of the PMF is then proposed, whereby the source of metals is attributed to underlying carbonate rocks beyond the Reivilo Formation of the Campbellrand Subgroup. The main process by which metals are primarily accumulated is attributed to karstification of the dolomitic substrate. The overlying Asbestos Hills Subgroup banded iron formation (BIF) is suggested as a potential source of alkali metals, which also provides a mechanism for leaching of these BIFs to form high-grade residual iron ore deposits. Based on the analysis of geochemical and mineralogical compositions, deep sea clay sediment characteristics and their material sources were examined in the eastern flank of the Gagua Ridge. The mineralogy mainly consists of detrital clay minerals, quartz, and authigenic phillipsite. There is scarce biogenic debris (siliceous or calcareous). The consolidated sediments are more enriched in Si, Al, K, Na, Li, Sc, Cr, Rb, and Cs than the associated crusts and nodules. The unmixed sediment samples were mainlycontributed by Asian eolian dust. The onset of the outer Fe-Mn crust growth nearly coincides with the Central Asia aridification event at ~3.5 Ma, which resulted in an abrupt increase in eolian flux of Asian dust. Intensified surface primary productivity is assumed to bring more metals to deep waters, and eventually facilitate the outer Fe-Mn crust formation. Authigenic phillipsite may come from the alteration of local basic volcanic glasses and cause excess Al, high Al/Ti, and low Si/Al ratios. However, phillipsites hardly affect the abundance of rare earth elements (REEs) and their patterns. In addition, the investigation of two kinds of burrows inside the consolidated sediments reveals that the inner nodules of the amalgamated crusts may remain on the oxic sediment surface, due to frequent benthic activities.
