Railway networks are among the many physical systems that reveal a fractal structure. This paper studies the Portuguese railway system, and analyzes how it evolved over time, namely what concerns the structure of its different levels, and its distribution over the territory. In this paper, a proposed computational method referred to as Projected Differential Transformation Method (PDTM) resulting from the modification of the classical Differential Transformation Method (DTM) is applied, for the first time, to the Black-Scholes Equation for European Option Valuation. The results obtained converge faster to their associated exact solution form; these easily computed results represent the analytical values of the associated European call options, and the same algorithm can be followed for European put options. It is shown that PDTM is more efficient, reliable and better than the classical DTM and other semi-analytical methods since less computational work is involved. This paper identifies the salient factors that characterize the inequality income distribution for Romania. Data analysis is rigorously carried out using sophisticated techniques borrowed from classical statistics (Theil). Decomposition of the inequalities measured by the Theil index is also performed. This study uses structural entropy as a valuable method for studying complex networks in a macro-finance context, such as the European government bond market. We make two contributions to the empirical literature on sovereign bond markets and entropy in complex networks. Firstly, our article contributes to the empirical literature on the disciplinary function of credit markets from an entropy perspective. In particular, we study bond yield differentials at an average daily frequency among EU countries' 10-year Eurobonds issued between 1 January 1997, and 4 October 2022. Secondly, the article brings a methodological novelty by incorporating an entropy perspective to the study of government bond yield differentials and European capital market integration. The design and optimization of new-generation solid-state quantum hardware absolutely requires reliable dissipation versus decoherence models. Depending on the device operational condition, the latter may range from Markov-type schemes (both phenomenological- and microscopic- like) to quantum-kinetic approaches. The primary goal of this paper is to review in a cohesive way virtues versus limitations of the most popular approaches, focussing on a few critical issues recently pointed out (see, e.g., Phys. Rev. B 90, 125140 (2014); Eur. Phys. J. B 90, 250 (2017)) and linking them within a common framework. By means of properly designed simulated experiments of a prototypical quantum-dot nanostructure (described via a two-level electronic system coupled to a phonon bath), we shall show that both conventional (i.e., non-Lindblad) Markov models and density-matrix-based non-Markov approaches (i.e., quantum-kinetic treatments) may lead to significant positivity violations. While for the former case the problem is easily avoidable by choosing genuine Lindblad-type dissipation models, for the latter, a general strategy is still missing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, Bennett et al. (Eur. J. Phys. 37:014001, 2016) presented a physically-motivated and explicitly gauge-independent scheme for the quantisation of the electromagnetic field in flat Minkowski space. In this paper we generalise this field quantisation scheme to curved spacetimes. Working within the standard assumptions of quantum field theory and only postulating the physicality of the photon, we derive the Hamiltonian, H ^ , and the electric and magnetic field observables, E ^ and B ^ , respectively, without having to invoke a specific gauge. As an example, we quantise the electromagnetic field in the spacetime of an accelerated Minkowski observer, Rindler space, and demonstrate consistency with other field quantisation schemes by reproducing the Unruh effect. The main research question concerned the identification of changes in the COVID-19 epidemiological situation using fuzzy clustering methods. This research used cross-sectional time series data obtained from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. The identification of country types in terms of epidemiological risk was carried out using the fuzzy c-means clustering method. We also used the entropy index to measure the degree of fuzziness in the classification and evaluate the uncertainty of epidemiological states. The proposed approach allowed us to identify countries' epidemic states. Moreover, it also made it possible to determine the time of transition from one state to another, as well as to observe fluctuations during changes of state. Three COVID-19 epidemic states were identified in Europe, i.e., stabilisation, destabilisation, and expansion. The methodology is universal and can also be useful for other countries, as well as the research results being important for governments, politicians and other policy-makers working to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are looking for tools to identify, model, and measure systemic risk in the insurance sector. To this aim, we investigated the possibilities of using the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm in two ways. The first way of using DTW is to assess the suitability of the Minimum Spanning Trees' (MST) topological indicators, which were constructed based on the tail dependence coefficients determined by the copula-DCC-GARCH model in order to establish the links between insurance companies in the context of potential shock contagion. The second way consists of using the DTW algorithm to group institutions by the similarity of their contribution to systemic risk, as expressed by DeltaCoVaR, in the periods distinguished. For the crises and the normal states identified during the period 2005–2019 in Europe, we analyzed the similarity of the time series of the topological indicators of MST, constructed for 38 European insurance institutions. The results obtained confirm the effectiveness of MST topological indicators for systemic risk identification and the evaluation of indirect links between insurance institutions. The increase in the proportion of elderly in Europe brings with it certain challenges that society needs to address, such as custodial care. We propose a scalable, easily modulated and live assistive technology system, based on a comfortable smart footwear capable of detecting walking behaviour, in order to prevent possible health problems in the elderly, facilitating their urban life as independently and safety as possible. This brings with it the challenge of handling the large amounts of data generated, transmitting and pre-processing that information and analysing it with the aim of obtaining useful information in real/near-real time. This is the basis of information theory. This work presents a complete system aiming at elderly people that can detect different user behaviours/events (sitting, standing without imbalance, standing with imbalance, walking, running, tripping) through information acquired from 20 types of sensor measurements (16 piezoelectric pressure sensors, one accelerometer returning reading for the 3 axis and one temperature sensor) and warn the relatives about possible risks in near-real time. For the detection of these events, a hierarchical structure of cascading binary models is designed and applied using artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms and deep learning techniques. The best models are achieved with convolutional layered ANN and multilayer perceptrons. The overall event detection performance achieves an average accuracy and area under the ROC curve of 0.84 and 0.96, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
