The pulp and paper (P&P) sector is a dynamic manufacturing industry and plays an essential role in the Austrian economy. However, the sector, which consumes about 20 TWh of final energy, is responsible for 7% of Austria's industrial CO2 emissions. This study, intending to assess the potential for improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions in the Austrian context in the P&P sector, uses a bottom-up approach model. The model is applied to analyze the energy consumption (heat and electricity) and CO2 emissions in the main processes, related to the P&P production from virgin or recycled fibers. Afterward, technological options to reduce energy consumption and fossil CO2 emissions for P&P production are investigated, and various low-carbon technologies are applied to the model. For each of the selected technologies, the potential of emission reduction and energy savings up to 2050 is estimated. Finally, a series of low-carbon technology-based scenarios are developed and evaluated. These scenarios' content is based on the improvement potential associated with the various processes of different paper grades. The results reveal that the investigated technologies applied in the production process (chemical pulping and paper drying) have a minor impact on CO2 emission reduction (maximum 10% due to applying an impulse dryer). In contrast, steam supply electrification, by replacing fossil fuel boilers with direct heat supply (such as commercial electric boilers or heat pumps), enables reducing emissions by up to 75%. This means that the goal of 100% CO2 emission reduction by 2050 cannot be reached with one method alone. Consequently, a combination of technologies, particularly with the electrification of the steam supply, along with the use of carbon-free electricity generated by renewable energy, appears to be essential. This article presents an algorithm for modelling an Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) for power transformer paper conditions in order to estimate the transformer's expected life. The dielectric characteristics, dissolved gasses, and furfural of 108 running transformers were collected, which were divided into 76 training datasets and another 32 testing datasets. The degree of polymerization (DP) of the transformer paper was predicted using the ANFIS model based on using the dielectric characteristics and dissolved gases as input. These inputs were analyzed, and the best combination was selected, whereas CO + CO2, acidity, interfacial tension, and color were correlated with the paper's deterioration condition and were chosen as the input variables. The best combination of input variables and membership function was selected to build the optimal ANFIS model, which was then compared and evaluated. The proposed ANFIS model has 89.07% training accuracy and 85.75% testing accuracy and was applied to a transformer paper insulation assessment and an estimation of the expected life of four Indonesian transformers for which furfural data is unavailable. This proposed algorithm can be used as a furfural alternative for the general assessment of transformer paper conditions and the estimation of expected life and provides a helpful assistance for experts in transformer condition assessment. As a part of our research in the field of thermochemical energy storage, this study aims to investigate the potential of three fly ash samples derived from the fluidized bed reactors of three different pulp and paper plants in Austria for their use as thermochemical energy (TCES) and CO2 storage materials. The selected samples were analyzed by different physical and chemical analytical techniques such as X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size distribution (PSD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), and simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) under different atmospheres (N2, CO2, and H2O/CO2). To evaluate the environmental impact, leaching tests were also performed. The amount of CaO as a promising candidate for TCES was verified by XRF analysis, which was in the range of 25–63% (w/w). XRD results indicate that the CaO lies as free lime (3–32%), calcite (21–29%), and silicate in all fly ash samples. The results of STA show that all fly ash samples could fulfill the requirements for TCES (i.e., charging and discharging). A cycling stability test of three cycles was demonstrated for all samples which indicates a reduction of conversion in the first three reaction cycles. The energy content of the examined samples was up to 504 kJ/kg according to the STA results. More energy (~1090 kJ/kg) in the first discharging step in the CO2/H2O atmosphere could be released through two kinds of fly ash samples due to the already existing free lime (CaO) in those samples. The CO2 storage capacity of these fly ash samples ranged between 18 and 110 kg per ton of fly ash, based on the direct and dry method. The leaching tests showed that all heavy metals were below the limit values of the Austrian landfill ordinance. It is viable to say that the valorization of fly ash from the pulp and paper industries via TCES and CO2 storage is plausible. The heat exchanger plays a key role in the S-CO2 power cycle of power generation systems based on waste heat and has a large impact on their cost control and compactness. In this paper, we take the channel shape of a microchannel heat exchanger as the research object and combine orthogonal tests and numerical simulation, taking the microchannel cross-section length/short-axis ratio, volume ratio and filling rate as independent variables, to numerically study multi-channel thermal–fluid–solid coupling and explore the effects of different microchannel cross-section length/short-axis ratios, volume ratios and filling rates on the thermal hydraulic and mechanical properties of the heat exchanger. The results show that a change in the channel volume ratio has a greater impact on the thermal hydraulic performance of the heat exchanger and that its heat transfer performance is only marginally affected by a change in the channel filling rate. Additionally, when other geometric parameters are kept to a certain level, the closer the shape of the channel is to a circle, the better its mechanical properties are. Within the range of permissible designs, a change in the channel volume ratio does not have an obvious impact on the mechanical properties of the microchannels, while the channel filling rate has the most significant impact. Through extensive data research and analysis, this paper comprehensively summarizes the status and key insights of global carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) development. It aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, technologies, and security measures adopted by major countries in their CCS development processes. Furthermore, it explores the existing status and limitations of China's offshore development efforts, while providing valuable recommendations for enhancing China's offshore CCS initiatives, as well as serving as a reference for other nations worldwide. Offshore CCS plays a crucial role for China to achieve the development target of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, due to its energy structure and industrial distribution. While China possesses significant offshore CCS potential, achieving commercialization still requires substantial efforts. To facilitate the process and draw insights from successful experiences in other countries, this paper illustrates the characteristics and generalizes the experience of offshore CCS industry practices in America, Europe and Japan, respectively. Furthermore, it is recommended that a new round of investigation into offshore CCS potential be conducted, while promoting integrated collaboration between geological surveying and marine scientific research. Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage (CCS) is frequently identified as a potential component to achieving a decarbonized power system at least cost; however, power system models frequently lack detailed representation of CO2 transportation, injection, and storage (CTS) infrastructure. In this paper, we present a novel approach to explicitly represent CO2 storage potential and CTS infrastructure costs and constraints within a continental-scale power system capacity expansion model. In addition, we evaluate the sensitivity of the results to assumptions about the future costs and performance of CTS components and carbon capture technologies. We find that the quantity of CO2 captured within the power sector is relatively insensitive to the range of CTS costs explored, suggesting that the cost of CO2 capture retrofits is a more important driver of CCS implementation than the costs of transportation and storage. Finally, we demonstrate that storage and injection costs account for the predominant share of total costs associated with CTS investment and operation, suggesting that pipeline infrastructure costs have limited influence on the competitiveness of CCS. Direct air capture (DAC) systems that capture carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the atmosphere are garnering considerable attention for their potential role as negative emission technologies in achieving net-zero CO2 emission goals. Common DAC technologies are based either on liquid–solvent (L-DAC) or solid–sorbent (S-DAC) to capture CO2. A comprehensive multi-factor comparative economic analysis of the deployment of L-DAC and S-DAC facilities across various United States (U.S.) cities is presented in this paper. The analysis considers the influence of various factors on the favorability of DAC deployment, including local climatic conditions such as temperature, humidity, and CO2 concentrations; the availability of energy sources to power the DAC system; and costs for the transport and storage of the captured CO2 along with the consideration of the regional market and policy drivers. The deployment analysis in over 70 continental U.S. cities shows that L-DAC and S-DAC complement each other spatially, as their performance and operational costs vary in different climates. L-DAC is more suited to the hot, humid Southeast, while S-DAC is preferrable in the colder, drier Rocky Mountain region. Strategic deployment based on regional conditions and economics is essential for promoting the commercial adoptability of DAC, which is a critical technology to meet the CO2 reduction targets. Numerical simulations of the leakage and diffusion behavior of liquid CO2 vessels and security analyses were conducted in this paper, based on a CO2 compression energy storage system. With isentropic choking model, the leakage of vessels under specific conditions was numerically simulated. The influence of different wind speeds on leakage in near-zone field was studied. Meanwhile, the diffusion characteristics of CO2 under three different influencing factors were investigated with the UDM (Unified Dispersion Model) diffusion model, and the diffusion ranges of certain concentrations were detected in the far-zone field. The results show that the low-temperature zone of the 50 mm leak aperture can reach 0.74 m downwind, and basically does not change with wind speed. In the leakage direction, the maximum damage zone of high-speed flow can reach 7.70 m. For the far-zone field, the diffusion area and downwind distance of a dangerous concentration decrease with the increasing of wind speed, and the hazardous area of the low concentration is greatly affected. Based on specific conditions, the maximum diffusion area is 78.46 m2 at 1 m/s wind speed, and the dangerous range reaches 36.32 m downwind. The larger the leakage aperture, the faster the growth trend of the low concentration area under the same conditions. As the equivalent radius of the leakage aperture is less than 50 mm, the maximum diffusion area is proportional to the cubic of the leakage aperture radius. The higher the height of the leakage source, the smaller the concentration range at 1.5 m, which is the average human breathing height. The overall cloud moves upward, meaning that the ground risk decreases. When the leakage aperture is 50 mm and the wind speed is 1 m/s, the maximum cloud diffusion range is 857.35 m2 at the leakage height of 2 m, and the dangerous range reaches 109.53 m downwind, where the maximum concentration is 14.65%. Ecofuels and their feedstock come in three main product classes: electrofuels (e-Fuels), biofuels, and non-biowaste-derived fuels. Ecofuels originate from non-fossil sources, derived from circular raw materials such as non-food organic waste, renewable hydrogen, and captured CO2 through a rapid process of carbon fixation. Proposed regulation drafts under discussion indicate that new fuels would need to reach a substantial degree of climate neutrality. The manufacture of all ecofuels, however, requires energy input to accomplish the conversion of the initial feedstock; their climate neutrality claims stem from the use of renewable electric energy and/or biomasses in the production process, but fossil fuels are still the main primary sources of global (and the EU's) electric power, and most biofuels consumed in the EU transport mix are still crop-based, with potential conflicts with food and land use. Furthermore, entirely neglecting GHG emissions from renewable energy generation is scientifically debatable, as the impact of the energy (and the related GHG emissions) embedded in the materials used to build renewable energy facilities is small, but not nil. As the main contributor of carbon emissions, the low-carbon transition of the industrial sector is important for achieving the goal of carbon dioxide peaking. Hydrogen-enabled industrial energy systems (HIESs) are a promising way to achieve the low-carbon transition of industrial energy systems, since the hydrogen can be well coordinated with renewable energy sources and satisfy the high and continuous industrial energy demand. In this paper, the long-term capacity expansion planning problem of the HIES is formulated from the perspective of industrial parks, and the targets of carbon dioxide peaking and the gradual decommissioning of existing equipment are considered as constraints. The results show that the targets of carbon dioxide peaking before different years or with different emission reduction targets can be achieved through the developed method, while the economic performance is ensured to some extent. Meanwhile, the overall cost of the strategy based on purchasing emission allowance is three times more than the cost of the strategy obtained by the developed method, while the emissions of the two strategies are same. In addition, long-term carbon reduction policies and optimistic expectations for new energy technologies will help industrial parks build more new energy equipment for clean transformation. The urgent need to find mitigating pathways for limiting world CO2 emissions to net zero by 2050 has led to intense research on CO2 sequestration in deep saline reservoirs. This paper reviews key advancements in lab- and simulation-scale research on petrophysical, geochemical, and mineralogical changes during CO2–brine–rock interactions performed in the last 25 years. It delves into CO2 MPD (mineralization, precipitation, and dissolution) and explores alterations in petrophysical properties during core flooding and in static batch reactors. These properties include changes in wettability, CO2 and brine interfacial tension, diffusion, dispersion, CO2 storage capacity, and CO2 leakage in caprock and sedimentary rocks under reservoir conditions. The injection of supercritical CO2 into deep saline aquifers can lead to unforeseen geochemical and mineralogical changes, possibly jeopardizing the CCS (carbon capture and storage) process. There is a general lack of understanding of the reservoir's interaction with the CO2 phase at the pore/grain scale. This research addresses the gap in predicting the long-term changes of the CO2–brine–rock interaction using various geochemical reactive transport simulators. Péclet and Damköhler numbers can contribute to a better understanding of geochemical interactions and reactive transport processes. Additionally, the dielectric constant requires further investigation, particularly for pre- and post-CO2–brine–rock interactions. For comprehensive modeling of CO2 storage over various timescales, the geochemical modeling software called the Geochemist's Workbench was found to outperform others. Wettability alteration is another crucial aspect affecting CO2–brine–rock interactions under varying temperature, pressure, and salinity conditions, which is essential for ensuring long-term CO2 storage security and monitoring. In recent years, CO2 flooding has become an important technical measure for oil and gas field enterprises to further improve oil and gas recovery and achieve the goal of "dual carbon". It is also one of the concrete application forms of CCUS. Numerical simulation based on CO2-EOR plays an indispensable role in the study of the mechanism of CO2 flooding and buried percolation, allowing for technical indicators to be selected and EOR/EGR prediction to be improved for reservoir engineers. This paper discusses the numerical simulation techniques related to CO2 flooding and storage, including mathematical models and solving algorithms. A multiphase and multicomponent mathematical model is developed to describe the flow mechanism of hydrocarbon components–CO2–water underground and to simulate the phase diagram of the components. The two-phase P-T flash calculation with SSI (+DEM) and the Newton method is adopted to obtain the gas–liquid phase equilibrium parameters. The extreme value judgment of the TPD function is used to form the phase stability test and miscibility identification model. A tailor-made multistage preconditioner is built to solve the linear equation of the strong-coupled, multiphase, multicomponent reservoir simulation, which includes the variables of pressure, saturation, and composition. The multistage preconditioner improves the computational efficiency significantly. A numerical simulation of CO2 injection in a carbonate reservoir in the Middle East shows that it is effective for researching the recovery factor and storage quantity of CO2 flooding based on the above numerical simulation techniques. Pressurized liquefied natural gas (PLNG) is a new natural gas liquefaction solution proposed in recent years for reducing the construction and operating costs of floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG). For natural gas, the liquefaction temperature is strongly influenced by the pressure; when the pressure increases, the liquefaction temperature of natural gas increases accordingly. The increase in the liquefaction temperature of natural gas leads to a higher solubility of impurities such as carbon dioxide, which means that the pretreatment standards for liquefied natural gas can be reduced. Therefore, the use of PLNG technology can simplify pretreatment plants and significantly reduce construction and operating costs. In order to better apply PLNG technology to FLNG, it is necessary to understand the solubility of carbon dioxide in pressurized LNG and the phase change during liquefaction. To achieve this, experimental setups are needed to simulate the temperature and pressure environment of the LNG to obtain the relevant data and observe the relevant phenomena. After a literature research and analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of previous experimental setups, several improvements are proposed in this paper, and based on this, a visualization device is designed for studying the liquid–solid-phase equilibrium experiment of CO2 in PLNG. The device has a pressure resistance of 20 MPa, a minimum operating temperature of 77 K, and a variable volume function. It is also equipped with a sapphire window to be able to observe the inside of the device. In order to verify the superiority of the device, experiments were conducted using the device to verify the pressure resistance, variable volume, and visualization functions of the device. Amid the global emphasis on efficient power conversion systems under the "dual carbon" policy framework, the supercritical CO2 (SCO2) Brayton cycle is a noteworthy subject, owing to its pronounced efficiency, compact design, economic viability, and remarkable potential to increase the thermal cycle efficiency of nuclear reactors. However, its application across various nuclear reactor loops presents divergent challenges, complicating system design and analytical processes. This paper offers a thorough insight into the latest research on the SCO2 Brayton cycle, particularly emphasising its integration within directly and indirectly cooled nuclear reactors. The evolution of the Brayton cycle in nuclear reactor systems has been meticulously explored, focusing on its structural dynamics, key components, and inherent pros and cons associated with distinct reactor loops. Based on the theoretical frameworks and empirical findings related to turbomachinery and heat exchangers within the cycle, we chart a course for future enquiries into its critical components, underscoring the indispensable role of experimental investigations. This paper conclusively assesses the feasibility of deploying the SCO2 Brayton cycle in direct and indirect cooling contexts, offering a forward-looking perspective on its developmental trajectory. The objective of this paper was to study the sCO2 cycle as a waste heat recovery system for a 180 kW biogas engine. The research methodology adopted was numerical simulations through two models built in different programs: Aspen HYSYS and GT Suite. The models were used to optimize the design and thermodynamic parameters of a CO2 cycle in terms of system power, system efficiency, expander, and compressor efficiency. Depending on the objective function, the sCO2 cycle could provide additional power ranging from 27.9 to 11.3 kW. Based on the calculation performed, "Recuperated cycle at maximum power" was selected for further investigation. The off-design analysis of the system revealed the optimum operating point. Small nuclear power plants are a promising direction of research for the development of carbon-free energy in isolated power systems and in remote regions with undeveloped infrastructure. Improving the efficiency of power units integrated with small modular reactors will improve the prospects for the commercialization of such projects. Power cycles based on supercritical carbon dioxide are an effective solution for nuclear power plants that use reactor facilities with an initial coolant temperature above 550 °C. However, the presence of low temperature rejected heat sources in closed Bryton cycles indicates a potential for energy saving. This paper presents a comprehensive thermodynamic analysis of the integration of an additional low-temperature organic Rankine cycle for heat recovery to supercritical carbon dioxide cycles. A scheme for sequential heat recovery from several sources in S-CO2 cycles is proposed. It was found that the use of R134a improved the power of the low-temperature circuit. It was revealed that in the S-CO2 Brayton cycle with a recuperator, the ORC add-on increased the net efficiency by an average of 2.98%, and in the recompression cycle by 1.7–2.2%. With sequential heat recovery in the recuperative cycle from the intercooling of the compressor and the main cooler, the increase in efficiency from the ORC superstructure will be 1.8%. This paper addresses the problem of hydrogen generation from hydrocarbon gases using Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) with byproduct CO2 injected into and stored in a partially depleted oil reservoir. It focuses on the reservoir aspects of the problem using numerical simulation of the processes. To this aim, a numerical model of a real oil reservoir was constructed and calibrated based on its 30-year production history. An algorithm was developed to quantify the CO2 amount from the SMR process as well as from the produced fluids, and optionally, from external sources. Multiple simulation forecasts were performed for oil and gas production from the reservoir, hydrogen generation, and concomitant injection of the byproduct CO2 back to the same reservoir. EOR from miscible oil displacement was found to occur in the reservoir. Various scenarios of the forecasts confirmed the effectiveness of the adopted strategy for the same source of hydrocarbons and CO2 sink. Detailed simulation results are discussed, and both the advantages and drawbacks of the proposed approach for blue hydrogen generation are concluded. In particular, the question of reservoir fluid balance was emphasized, and its consequences were presented. The presented technology, using CO2 from hydrogen production and other sources to increase oil production, also has a significant impact on the protection of the natural environment via the elimination of CO2 emission to the atmosphere with concomitant production of H2. As the atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration rapidly rises, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is an emerging field for climate change mitigation. Various carbon capture technologies are in development with the help of adsorbents, membranes, solvent-based systems, etc. One of the main challenges in this field is the removal of CO2 from nitrogen (N2) gas. This paper focuses on mixed matrix membrane technology, for which the CO2/N2 separation performance is based on differences in gas permeations. Membrane separation and purification technologies are widely studied for carbon capture. Microporous adsorbents such as zeolites and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for carbon capture have been attracting researchers' attention due to their highly porous structures, high selectivity values, and tunable porosities. Utilizing microporous adsorbents dispersed within a novel, blended polymer matrix, fourteen membranes were prepared with the commercial MOF ZIF-8, zeolite 13X, and kaolin, with methyl cellulose (MC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which were tested using a single gas permeation setup in this study. The addition of polyallylamine (PAH) as a chemisorbent was also investigated. These membranes were synthesized both with and without a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) support to compare their performances. MC was found to be an ideal polymeric matrix component to develop free-standing MMMs. At 24 °C and a relatively low feed pressure of 2.36 atm, a free-standing zeolite-13X-based membrane (MC/PAH/13X/PVA) exhibited the highest N2/CO2 selectivity of 2.8, with a very high N2 permeability of 6.9 × 107 Barrer. Upon the optimization of active layer thickness and filler weight percentages, this easily fabricated free-standing MMM made of readily available materials is a promising candidate for CO2 purification through nitrogen removal. The supercritical CO2 power cycle driven by solar as a new generation of solar thermal power generation technology has drawn significant attention worldwide. In this paper, a cogeneration system derived from a supercritical CO2 recompression Brayton cycle is proposed, by considering the recovery of waste heat from the turbine outlet. The absorption refrigeration cycle is powered by the medium-temperature waste heat from the turbine outlet, while the low-temperature waste heat is employed for heating, achieving the cascaded utilization of the heat from the turbine outlet. As for the proposed combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) system, a dynamic model was built and verified in MATLAB R2021b/Simulink. Under design conditions, values for the energy utilization factor (EUF) and exergy efficiency of the cogeneration system were obtained. Moreover, the thermodynamic performances of the system were investigated in variable cooling/heating load and irradiation conditions. Compared with the reference system, it is indicated that the energy utilization factor (EUF) and exergy efficiency are 84.7% and 64.8%, which are improved by 11.5% and 10.3%. Alternative solvents based on aqueous solutions of amino acids have been recently developed as possible substitutes for Mono Ethanol Amine (MEA) for CO2 removal from flue gas streams. The potassium taurate solvent has the advantages of degradation resistance, low toxicity and low energy requirements for its regeneration. With any type of solvent, CO2 removal applied to a power production plant decreases the revenues obtained from selling electricity because of the energy requirements. Operating the CO2 removal section in flexible mode avoids significant effects on the profits of the power plant, while accomplishing environmental regulations. This work is the first journal paper focusing on the application in flexible mode of the potassium taurate system for treating a flue gas stream from a 500 MW coal-fired power plant. Techno-economic evaluations are performed to determine the best operating conditions considering the variation in the electricity demand and its price, and different values of carbon tax. In the summer period, with high electricity prices and demands, carbon tax values between 45 EUR/tCO2 and 60 EUR/tCO2 favor CO2 absorption in the flexible mode, without periods of full CO2 emissions during the day. Singapore has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, which requires the pursuit of multiple decarbonization pathways. CO 2 utilization methods such as fuel production may provide a fast interim solution for carbon abatement. This paper evaluates the feasibility of green hydrogen-based synthetic fuel (synfuel) production as a method for utilizing captured CO 2 . We consider several scenarios: a baseline scenario with no changes, local production of synfuel with hydrogen imports, and overseas production of synfuel with CO 2 exports. This paper aims to determine a CO 2 price for synfuel production, evaluate the economic viability of local versus overseas production, and investigate the effect of different cost parameters on economic viability. Using the current literature, we estimate the associated production and transport costs under each scenario. We introduce a CO 2 utilization price (CUP) that estimates the price of utilizing captured CO 2 to produce synfuel, and an adjusted CO 2 utilization price (CCUP) that takes into account the avoided emissions from crude oil-based fuel production. We find that overseas production is more economically viable compared to local production, with the best case CCUP bounds giving a range of 142–148 $/t CO 2 in 2050 if CO 2 transport and fuel shipping costs are low. This is primarily due to the high cost of hydrogen feedstock, especially the transport cost, which can offset the combined costs of CO 2 transport and fuel shipping. In general, we find that any increase in the hydrogen feedstock cost can significantly affect the CCUP for local production. Sensitivity analysis reveals that hydrogen transport cost has a significant impact on the viability of local production and if this cost is reduced significantly, local production can be cheaper than overseas production. The same is true if the economies of scale for local production is significantly better than overseas production. A significantly lower carbon capture cost can also the reduce the CCUP significantly. The aim of this paper is to analyze the deformation-failure degree and microstructure variations in coal under the cryogenic-freezing effect of liquid CO2. In this paper, X-ray CT scanning technology is adopted to measure the microscopic-morphological parameters of coal. Drawing support from the image processing and three-dimensional (3D) visualization functions of Avizo software, 3D spatial structure variation rules, as well as the deformation and permeability parameters, are quantitatively calculated. Under the effect of LCO2 cryogenic freezing, the macroscopic mechanical properties and deformation-failure degree of coal are thoroughly analyzed. The results show that fracture-scale parameters of treated coal are significantly increased, resulting in spatial structure parameters including the coal plug total volume (Vt), fracture network volume (V0), and proportion of fracture network (μ0) to increase by 17.11%, 56.57%, and 55.59%, respectively. A comparison analysis indicates that the coverage area of a single value function from the percolation theoretical model for treated coal plugs becomes larger, and its percolation curves are more intensive; the quantitative coal permeability coefficients are increased to more than 40% on average, which further proves that the permeability of coal by using LCO2 cryogenic freezing is significantly improved. Under the same uniaxial stress loading rate, the peak stress threshold value required by treated coal in the compaction and elastoplastic deformation stage is decreased. The corresponding output acoustic emission energy is apparently increased, owing to the increased brittleness of coal, and deformation failure of coal occurs more easily. Simultaneously, the fracture network and matrix surface of treated coal are more complex, and the corresponding fractal characteristic is obvious. It could be thus concluded that the coal plugs have deformation-failure changes under cryogenic freezing by using LCO2, increasing the proportion of coal microstructure and enhancing coal permeability. It is difficult to exploit low-permeability reservoirs, and CO2 flooding is an effective method to improve oil recovery from low permeability reservoirs. However, in the process of CO2 flooding, acidic fluids dissolved in formation water will react with rock to cause dissolution and precipitation, resulting in pores and precipitates, changing the evolution law of seepage channels, destroying formation integrity, and affecting the effect of CO2 oil displacement. The change in rock's physical properties and the mass transfer law between CO2-water-rock are unclear. This paper considers the coupling effects of seepage, mechanics, and chemistry when CO2 is injected into the formation. The mass transfer model of CO2-water-rock in the geochemical reaction process is established on this basis. The physical properties of the reservoir after CO2 injection are quantitatively studied based on the microscopic mechanism of chemical reaction, and the migration law of solute in the reservoir rock during CO2 flooding under the coupling effects of multiple fields is clarified. The experimental results show that with the increase in reaction time, the initial dissolution reaction of formation rocks will be transformed into a precipitation reaction of calcite, magnesite, and clay minerals. The porosity and permeability of the rocks near the well first increase and then decrease. The far well end is still dominated by dissolution reactions, and the average values of formation porosity and permeability show an upward trend. Although the dissolution reaction of CO2-water-rock can improve the physical properties of reservoir rocks to a certain extent, the mutual transformation of the dissolution reaction and precipitation reaction further exacerbates the heterogeneity of formation pore structure, leading to the instability of CO2 migration, uneven displacement, and destruction of formation stability. The research results of this paper solve the problem of quantitative calculation of physical parameters under the coupling effect of multiple fields after CO2 injection into reservoirs and can predict the changes in formation physical properties, which can provide a certain theoretical basis for evaluating formation integrity and adjusting CO2 injection under the condition of CO2 flooding. Energy storage is a key factor to confer a technological foundation to the concept of energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables. Their solar dependency (direct radiation, wind, biomass, hydro, etc. ...) makes storage a requirement to match the supply and demand, with fulfillment being another key factor. Recently, the most attention is directed toward the direct electrical storage inside batteries, probably driven by interest in the transportation sector, which today is the main focus in the transition path. On the contrary, for the generation of electrical energy and, more generally, for industrial sectors whose CO2 emissions are defined as hard-to-abate, electrical storage is not a feasible answer to many political and non-technological concerns. Therefore, other storage methods must be considered to address excess electricity, the most characteristics of which being both the capacity and rate of charging/delivering. Among the efforts under consideration, the liquid storage of gases at ambient conditions is certainly an interesting option. This is the case with air and CO2. The paper focused on the storage of CO2 in liquid form, comparing its performance with those of air liquefaction, which well-studied in the literature. The paper proposed a novel plant layout design for a liquid CO2 energy storage system that can improve the round-trip efficiency by up to 57%. The system was also compared to a liquid air energy storage unit considering a state-of-the-art level of technology for components, showing better efficiency but lower energy density. The storage potential of hydrocarbon reservoirs in the central Gulf of Mexico (GOM) makes future development of CO2 storage projects in those areas promising for secure, large-scale, and long-term storage purposes. Focusing on the producing and depleted hydrocarbon fields in the continental slope of the central GOM, this paper analyzed, assessed, and screened the producing sands and evaluated their CO2 storage potential. A live interactive CO2 storage site screening system was built in the SAS® Viya system with a broad range of screening criteria combined from published studies. This offers the users a real-time assessment of the storage sites and enables them to adjust the filters and visualize the results to determine the most suitable filter range. The CO2 storage resources of the sands were estimated using a volumetric equation and the correlation developed by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). The results of this study indicate that 1.05 gigatons of CO2 storage resources are available in the developed reservoirs at the upper slope area of the central GOM. The objective of this study is to construct a refined microscopic transport model that elucidates the transport mechanisms of gas flow within micro-nano pores and fractures. The collective impact of various microscopic transport mechanisms was explained through the apparent permeability model, specifically related to gases such as methane and carbon dioxide, within the shale matrix. The apparent permeability models, taking into account microscopic transport mechanisms such as slippage flow, Knudsen diffusion, transition flow, and surface diffusion, were established individually. Subsequently, the influencing factors on apparent permeability were analyzed. The results demonstrate that the apparent permeability of the shale reservoir matrix is significantly influenced by pore pressure, temperature, pore size, and total organic carbon (TOC). As pressure decreases, the apparent permeability of Knudsen diffusion and surface diffusion increases, while the apparent permeability of slippage flow decreases. In addition, the apparent permeability of the reservoir matrix initially decreases and then increases. With increasing temperature, the apparent permeability of slippage flow, Knudsen diffusion, and surface diffusion all increase, as does the apparent permeability of the reservoir matrix. As pore size increases, the apparent permeability of surface diffusion and Knudsen diffusion decreases, while the apparent permeability of slippage flow and the reservoir matrix increases. Furthermore, an increase in TOC leads to no change in the apparent permeability of slippage flow and Knudsen diffusion, but an increase in the apparent permeability of surface diffusion and the reservoir matrix. The model presented in this paper enhances the multi-scale characterization of gas microflow mechanisms in shale and establishes the macroscopic application of these micro-mechanisms. The gasification kinetics of semi-coke are an important research topic in the gasification process of semi-coke. The evolution of the pore structure is one of the most important factors affecting the gasification rate of semi-coke. In this paper, the pore fractal growth model was established based on the principle of pore fractal growth and the Sierpinski sponge structure. Three kinds of semi-coke raw materials were used to prepare porous carbon with different degrees of gasification. Combined with the TG curves of raw materials, the gasification kinetics based on the fractal model were verified. The curves of the gasification reaction rate and the specific surface area as a function of carbon conversion were consistent with the random pore model and experimental data, which verified the feasibility of the model. The pore fractal dynamic model could predict the change in the pore structure with carbon conversion during semi-coke gasification, so as to reveal the kinetic law of carbon gasification. Shale oil resources are abundant, but reservoirs exhibit strong heterogeneity with extremely low porosity and permeability, and their development is challenging. Carbon dioxide (CO2) injection technology is crucial for efficient shale oil development. When CO2 is dissolved in reservoir formation water, it undergoes a series of physical and chemical reactions with various rock minerals present in the reservoir. These reactions not only modify the reservoir environment but also lead to precipitation that impacts the development of the oil reservoir. In this paper, the effects of water–rock interaction on core porosity and permeability during CO2 displacement are investigated by combining static and dynamic tests. The results reveal that the injection of CO2 into the core leads to reactions between CO2 and rock minerals upon dissolution in formation water. These reactions result in the formation of new minerals and the obstruction of clastic particles, thereby reducing core permeability. However, the generation of fine fractures through carbonic acid corrosion yields an increase in core permeability. The CO2–water–rock reaction is significantly influenced by the PV number, pressure, and temperature. As the injected PV number increases, the degree of pore throat plugging gradually increases. As the pressure increases, the volume of larger pore spaces gradually decreases, resulting in an increase in the degree of pore blockage. However, when the pressure exceeds 20 MPa, the degree of carbonic acid dissolution will be enhanced, resulting in the formation of small cracks and an increase in the volume of small pores. As the temperature reaches the critical point, the degree of blockage of macropores gradually increases, and the blockage of small pores also occurs, which eventually leads to a decrease in core porosity. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is being considered for use to enhance oil recovery and resource utilization and storage, with wide technical adaptability. In this paper, a numerical simulation method is used to study the adaptability of CO2 huff and puff in shale reservoirs. A fluid model introduces the nanoconfinement effect and reflects the nanoconfinement effect using the fluid p–T phase diagram. This method uses local grid refinement and changes the permeability near the grid to characterize the reservoir reconstruction volume (SRV) fracture network while considering the CO2 diffusion effect. The results indicate that by using the incremental recovery rate and oil change rate as references, adaptive charts can be obtained for different Kf/Km and oil saturation. When Kf/Km is 1000 and the increase in the CO2 recovery rate reaches 1.5%, the lower limit of oil saturation is 0.54. When Kf/Km is 1000 and the increase in the CO2 recovery rate reaches 2%, the lower limit of oil saturation is 0.57. When the oil saturation is 0.5 and the CO2 huff and puff oil change rate reaches 0.3, the lower limit of Kf/Km is 700. Finally, when the oil saturation is 0.548 and the CO2 huff and puff oil change rate reaches 0.6, the lower limit of Kf/Km is 10. Biogas is a gas resulting from the digestion of biomass, which means transforming organic waste into energy. It is composed essentially of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and can also contain ammonia (NH3) as an impurity. Biogas is generally used to generate electricity or produce heat in a cogeneration system. With the renewed interest in ammonia and the increasing development of biogas caused by the urge for an energetic transition, those two carbon-neutral fuels are being investigated as a mixture in this study through the laminar burning velocity (LBV). In this paper, the LBV of biogas ammonia air mixtures are investigated experimentally for the first time over a wide range of equivalence ratios and ammonia concentrations. The biogas studied was 60% CH4 and 40% CO2 in volume. The NH3 concentration in the fuel varied from 0 to 50% vol. while the equivalence ratio varied from 0.8 to 1.2. The experiments were conducted at constant pressure in a constant volume vessel at 300 K and 1 bar. Adding ammonia to biogas decreases the LBV while the Markstein length is not very sensitive to ammonia addition. The CEU-NH3-Mech-1.1 and Okafor mechanisms show good agreement with the experimental laminar burning velocity. The effect of radiative heat losses on the measurement is also investigated. The utilization of geological formations, distinguished by natural porosity and permeability and protected by low-permeability caprock, has emerged as an effective strategy for carbon dioxide (CO2) storage. This method significantly contributes to mitigating anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and addressing the challenges of climate change. Recent research has unveiled the potential of CO2 to enhance geothermal heat energy extraction in geothermal reservoirs by acting as a subsurface heat exchange fluid. This review paper explores the viability of CO2 in augmenting geothermal heat energy extraction, comparing it to conventional water-based geothermal systems. Special emphasis is placed on CO2 plume geothermal (CPG) systems, characterized by rapid deployment and long-term utilization of geothermal energy resources. With the overarching objective of establishing net-zero energy communities, the analysis of such systems offers a comprehensive understanding of their features, providing a fresh perspective on extracted energy within the context of energy supply in integrated, sustainable energy in built systems. Notably, these systems demonstrate efficacy in meeting the power requirements of an energy community, spanning both distinct heating and electricity needs. However, the key challenge lies in selecting suitable locations. This scientific review aims to comprehend the characteristics of CPG under specific temperature and pressure conditions while optimizing subsurface permeability. This paper reviews and evaluates work on the structural complexity of the potential carbon dioxide storage sites in the North Sea, including the nature of the reservoir structures, the reservoir rocks, the presence of inter-layers, faults, and fractures, and how these factors influence carbon dioxide capacity. In particular, the review emphasises the significance of studying caprocks in detail, not just the reservoir rock's carbon dioxide storage capacity. This work also particularly considers reservoir simulation work on North Sea sites and illustrates the importance of using fully coupled flow–geomechanical–geochemical modelling to ensure that complex feedback and synergistic effects are not missed. The paper addresses the problem of geomechanical effects in the vicinity of production/injection wells and their impacts on the processes of enhanced oil recovery by CO2 injection and CO2 sequestration in a partially depleted oil reservoir. In particular, it focuses on natural fracture systems and their dynamics caused by variations in the rock geomechanical state due to reservoir pressure changes during production/injection processes. The comprehensive approach to the problem requires the combined modeling of both geomechanical and flow phenomena associated with effective coupling simulations of their evolution. The paper applies such an approach to a real, partially depleted oil reservoir in Poland. An effective method of coupled geomechanical and dynamic simulations was used together with the natural boundary and initial conditions for both simulation types. In addition, typical operating conditions were applied in analyzing the processes of enhanced oil recovery by CO2 injection and CO2 sequestration. The detailed results of relevant modeling and simulations are presented and discussed focusing on various scale consequences, including the reservoir, well, and completion ones. Both general conclusions as well as the ones specific to the analyzed geological structure are drawn; they confirm the significant dependence of well performance on geomechanical effects and point out several key factors for this dependence. The conclusions specific to the analyzed structure concern fracture reactivation in tensile/hybrid failure mode caused by pressure build-up during CO2 injection and the importance of the fracture-induced aperture changes resulting from the normal stress, while the shear stress is found to be negligible. Refrigerant substitution is an urgent need in the context of reducing carbon emissions and slowing global warming. CO2 is now being proposed as a promising solution based on its excellent properties and system performance, especially in low-temperature environments. This paper presents an overview of recent advances in system configuration and operation characteristics to improve the performance of transcritical CO2 heat pump and refrigeration systems. The paper first introduces the basic research background, system cycle, and thermodynamic characteristics. Secondly, CO2 cycle improvements with single modifications and modification combinations are reviewed. Then, some important operation characteristics and control methods are discussed. Additionally, the paper provides a detailed description of the development of transcritical CO2 heat pump and refrigeration systems in the vehicle field. This paper discusses and reviews the main real gas effects on the thermodynamic performance of closed Brayton cycles. Cycles with carbon dioxide as working fluids are taken as a reference and a comparison of the thermodynamic cycle efficiencies that are made with other possible working fluids (pure fluids and fluid mixtures). We fixed the reduced operating conditions, in optimal conditions, so that all working fluids had the same thermodynamic global performances. Therefore, the choice of the working fluid becomes important for adapting the cycle to the different technological requirements. The positive effects of the real gas properties in supercritical cycles were approximately maximal at reduced minimum cycle temperatures of about 1.01 to 1.05, with maximum to minimum cycle temperatures of about 2.2. The use of mixtures furthers widens the application of the field of closed Brayton cycles, thereby allowing a continuous variation in the critical temperature of the resulting working fluid and, in some cases, also making it possible to take the condensation with a significant further increase in the thermodynamic cycle efficiency. The paper also demonstrates the thermodynamic convenience of resorting to mixtures of carbon dioxide and inert gases. Extensive measurements of vapour–liquid equilibria and analysis of the thermal stability and material compatibility are essential for a practical and full use of the real gas Brayton cycles. This paper reviews molecular dynamics (MD) concepts on heat transfer analysis of supercritical CO2, and highlights the major parameters that can affect the accuracy of respective thermal coefficients. Subsequently, the prime aspects of construction, transfer identification, and thermal performance are organized according to their challenges and prospective solutions associated with the mutability of supercritical CO2 properties. Likewise, the characteristics of bound force field schemes and thermal relaxation approaches are discussed on a case-by-case basis. Following the scarcity of literature on similar enquiries, this paper recommended a future series of studies on molecular dynamics models in a large region of supercriticality and phase-interactions for coupled heat and mass transfer systems. Supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) thermodynamic power cycles have been considerably investigated in the applications of fossil fuel and nuclear power generation systems, considering their superior characteristics such as compactness, sustainability, cost-effectiveness, environmentally friendly working fluid and high thermal efficiency. They can be potentially integrated and applied with various renewable energy systems for low-carbon power generation, so extensive studies in these areas have also been conducted substantially. It is thus necessary to provide an update and overview of the development of S-CO2 renewable energy systems and identify technology and integration opportunities for different types of renewable resources. With climate change, more intense weather phenomena can be expected, including pressure drops related to the arrival of an atmospheric front. Such drops of pressure are the main reason for gas emissions from closed mines to the surface, and a closed, empty mine shaft is the most likely route of this emission. Among the gases emitted, the most important are carbon dioxide and methane, creating a twofold problem—greenhouse gas emissions and gas hazards. The work presented in this paper simulated the spread of the mentioned gases near such an abandoned shaft for four variants: model validation, the most dangerous situations found during measurements with or without wind, and a forecast variant for a possible future pressure drop. It was found that a momentary CO2 emission of 0.69 m3/s and a momentary CH4 emission of 0.29 m3/s are possible, which for one hour of the appropriate drop would give hypothetically 2484 m3 CO2 and 1044 m3 CH4. In terms of gas hazards, the area that should be monitored and protected may exceed 25 m from a closed shaft in the absence of wind influence. In low permeability reservoirs, CO2 flooding usually leads to gas channeling, whereby a significant amount of CO2 bypasses the oil-bearing formation and fails to effectively displace oil. Introducing water-alternating-gas (WAG) flooding, utilizing water phase stability-driven processes, serves to suppress gas channeling and enhance oil recovery rates. Implementing WAG flooding, which utilizes water phase stability-driven processes, helps suppress gas channeling and improve oil recovery rates. The timing of implementing WAG flooding is crucial. Initiating WAG flooding prematurely can limit the efficiency of CO2 displacement, while initiating it with delays may result in severe gas channeling, resulting in decreased production and increased environmental risks. Finding the balance point is the challenge. The balance point can effectively control gas channeling without reducing the efficiency of CO2 flooding. In this paper, the timing of WAG flooding in low permeability reservoirs is studied in detail. Firstly, this study conducted experimental research to investigate the CO2 displacement process in both homogeneous and heterogeneous cores. Furthermore, it validated the correlation between the timing of WAG injection and the heterogeneity of the cores. The experimental results indicated the existence of an optimal timing for WAG injection, which is correlated with the degree of heterogeneity. Numerical simulation studies were performed to simulate the characteristics of the light oil–CO2 system using the Peng–Robinson (PR) equation. Furthermore, a history matching analysis was performed to validate the experimental results and investigate the correlation between WAG injection and the degree of heterogeneity. The study concluded that as the degree of heterogeneity increases, initiating WAG injection earlier leads to a more significant suppression of gas channeling, increased water–gas interaction, improved gas–oil contact, and enhanced the synergistic effect of increasing the resistance and pressure of WAG flooding and controlling gas channeling. Separate-layer CO2 flooding has increasingly been used to improve the overall development of multi-layer heterogeneous reservoirs. Due to their field technical limitations, layer combinations have to be carried out to reduce the number of layer-groups required for the separate injection of CO2. Currently there are few studies of the method of designing layer combinations. In field practice, the layer combinations are often made based on the permeability ratio of the layers to be developed, but it is not possible to accurately obtain the optimal scheme in many cases. Therefore, in this paper, a new design and optimization method based on the weighted standard deviation of permeability is proposed, which comprehensively considers the effects of multiple geological and fluid properties in different layers. The new method is applied to study the layer combination schemes in separate-layer CO2 flooding in H block, Daqingzijing Oilfield, Jilin, China. The prioritization of all of the schemes is obtained via the method, and a related numerical model is also established to perform verification and quantitative analysis. The results show that designing layer combinations using the new proposed method can achieve better development effect than using the conventional permeability ratio based method. It can achieve a more uniform interlayer CO2 displacement with an obvious improvement in the CO2 swept volume in low permeability layers and a higher overall oil recovery. According to the numerical simulation results, using the optimal layer combination scheme designed via the new proposed method, the ten-year swept volume of CO2 in the low permeability layer can be increased by 16.2%, and the ten-year overall oil recovery efficiency can be increased by 3.3%, with both measures showing a remarkable improvement. This paper presents experimental findings on heat and mass transfer, phase transitions, and chemical reactions during the interaction of CO2 hydrate in powder granules and tablets with burning liquid fuels and oil. The experiments involved CO2 hydrate tablets and spheres made of pressed granules. The fire containment and suppression times were established experimentally. Using the gas analysis data, we studied the effects of the mitigation of anthropogenic emissions from the combustion of liquids and their suppression by gas hydrates. We also compared the performance of water aerosol, foaming agent emulsion, snow, ice, and CO2 hydrate samples as laboratory-scale fire suppressants. The paper further describes the numerical modeling of the CO2 hydrate dissociation during liquid fuel combustion. The rapid carbon dioxide release is shown to prevent the oxidizer from the combustion zone. The suppression of a flame using powder with a granule size of 3 mm requires 20-times less carbon dioxide hydrate than in the case of pressed tablets. The large scale extraction of geothermal energy can reduce CO2 emissions. For hot dry rocks, the key to successful utilization depends on the efficiency of reservoir reconstruction. The chemical and thermal stimulation methods are always used in geothermal reservoir reconstruction except in hydraulic fracturing with high fluid injection pressure, which is believed to reduce the seismic hazard by applying before the high-pressure hydraulic fracturing stimulation. However, at the laboratory scale, there are still very limited experimental studies illustrating the combined effects of chemical and thermal stimulation on the permeability and mechanical properties of granite, which is regarded as the main type of hot dry rock. In this paper, comparative stimulation experiments were carried out, including thermal/cold stimulation, CO2 bearing solution hydro-chemical stimulation, combined thermal and CO2 bearing fluid stimulation. By means of nuclear magnetic resonance analysis, permeability test and triaxial compression test, the changes of the micro-structure, permeability and mechanical properties of granite under various stimulation conditions were analyzed. The experimental results show that, compared with the single thermal stimulation and CO2 bearing fluid hydro-chemical stimulation, the superposition effect of thermal and CO2 bearing fluid hydro-chemical stimulation can increase the number of micro-fractures in granite more effectively, thus increasing the permeability, while the elastic modulus and compressive strength decrease. Moreover, the cooling mode on the granite also has a certain influence on the stimulation effect. After water-cooling on the heated granite (300 °C), combined with the CO2 bearing fluid stimulation (240 °C, 20 MPa), the permeability of granite is the highest, increasing by 17 times that of the initial state, and the porosity also increases by 144.4%, while the elastic modulus and compressive strength decrease by 14.3% and 18.4%, respectively. This implies that the deterioration of mechanical properties due to the micro-fractures increased by the thermal and chemical stimulation can enhance the fluid conductivity and heat extraction of granite. The methods in this paper can provide a reference for the combined application of thermal and chemical stimulation technology in artificial reservoir reconstruction of hot dry rocks. In traditional energy production at large-scale, conventional methods are being used, including fossil fuels. This in turn leads to greenhouse gas emissions (e.g., carbon dioxide or CO2) that cause environmental concerns, but also those traditional methods rely on traditional distribution systems, which are burdened with high transmission losses. This paper focuses on a new concept in the energy sector that undergoes transformation from a traditional centralized system to a decentralized one. In reaching sustainability goals, such as net-zero emissions, the energy sector is incorporating renewable energy sources into the energy system. This requires transformation that combines big conventional energy producers with multiple small- and large-scale energy producers (rooftop photovoltaic panels, wind farms and solar plants) in one system. This enormous transformation is a difficult task, but with recent advancements in information and communication technologies, digitalization, the Industry 4.0 paradigm and Internet of Things technology, it is feasible to achieve. Low-permeability near-critical volatile reservoirs are characterized by light oil, complex fluid phase, and strong reservoir inhomogeneity, etc. Purely injecting CO2 will create a series of problems, such as serious gas channeling, low sweep efficiency, and low oil recovery. Therefore, in this paper, through a combination of experiments and simulations and in the process of studying the problem from simple to complex, we carried out phase equilibrium experiments for CO2-near-critical volatile oil and CO2-near-critical volatile oil-formation water, as well as experiments for minimum miscible pressure of slim-tube with pure CO2 and CO2–water co-injection to the comparative study of the miscible characteristics and displacement oil efficiency between pure CO2 injection and CO2–water co-injection. It provides an important reference for improving oil recovery by CO2–water co-injection in low-permeability near-critical volatile reservoir. The results of CO2-near-critical volatile oil/CO2-near-critical volatile oil-formation water phase equilibrium experiments show that the saturation pressure, density, and gas–oil ratio of the system increase, and the viscosity decreases with the increase in CO2 injection. In the three-phase system of CO2-near-critical volatile oil-formation water, the CO2 content in the flash gas of crude oil, gas–oil ratio, and gas–water ratio are negatively correlated with the water saturation. The results of slim-tube experiments and simulations on the miscible characteristics and displacement oil efficiency of pure CO2 injection and CO2–water co-injection show that the recovery degree of crude oil under CO2–water co-injection is higher than that of pure CO2 injection, and the CO2 dissolved transition section in oil and gas is shorter and the gas breakthrough time is later under CO2–water co-injection, which effectively increases the sweep efficiency and improves the degree recovery of crude oil. When CO2–water co-injection, the ratio of water is higher, the later the gas–oil ratio rises, the later the CO2 breakthrough, and the higher the degree of crude oil recovery. It indicates that when CO2–water co-injection, the ratio of water is higher, the more CO2 is dissolved in water, which effectively inhibits the occurrence of gas channeling and increases the sweep area, thus improving the degree recovery of crude oil. The research results of this paper provide an experimental basis and theoretical foundation for CO2–water co-injection for enhanced crude oil recovery in low-permeability near-critical volatile reservoirs. In recent years, heat storage technology has attracted wide attention in the fields of renewable energy storage for its relatively high melting point, high heat storage capacity and economy, Na2CO3 and eutectic salt mixtures containing Na2CO3 are promising candidates in the field of solar energy storage. In this paper, a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of Na2CO3 was conducted with the Born–Mayer potential function. The simulated solid–liquid phase change temperature is 1200 K, and the error is 5.4%. The heat capacity at constant pressure (Cp) is higher in liquid than in solid, the average Cp of solid is 1.45 J/g and that of liquid is 1.79 J/g, and the minimum error is 2.8%. The simulation results revealed the change rules of density and thermal expansion coefficient of Na2CO3 in the process of heating up, and these changes were analyzed by radial distribution functions (RDF) and angular distribution functions (ADF). Moreover, the RDF and ADF results show that the atomic spacing of Na2CO3 increases, the coordination number decreases, and the angle distribution between atoms becomes wider as the temperature rises. Finally, this paper examined the microscopic changes of ions during the phase transition of Na2CO3 from solid to liquid. It is concluded that the angle change of CO 3 2 − in the liquid state is more sharply. This study improves the understanding of the thermodynamic properties and local structure of Na2CO3 and provides theoretical support for Na2CO3 heat storage materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the performance characteristics of an R404A indirect refrigeration system (IRS) applied to an internal heat exchanger (IHX) is evaluated for supermarkets and hypermarkets. In a direct expansion system, R404A is the primary refrigerant and R744, a brine, is the secondary fluid. While there are abundant studies analyzing the theoretical performance of IRS, experimental research on IRS is lacking, and there are no papers that address the results of changes in the IHX in detail. In this study, the results achieved by modifying various parameters are experimentally evaluated to provide fundamental data for designing the optimal IRS. In the main results, looking at the trend of the increase in IHX efficiency, the change is very minimal when the efficiency is above 50%, so it is ideal to apply an IHX efficiency of about 50% considering economics and COP, etc. Applying the results in this study enables the operation and maintenance of IRSs as an eco-friendly system by achieving energy efficiency through optimizing the system coefficient of performance and securing economic feasibility by minimizing the R404A charging amount of the refrigeration cycle. To serve supermarkets and hypermarkets, R744 as a secondary fluid may help to realize an ecologically friendly, compact IRS system with a high heat transfer coefficient that can operate at low temperatures (−35 to 5 °C). The European Union takes significant steps to support the development of the electric sector of the automotive market. This is confirmed by the signed declaration in Glasgow, which leads to a ban on the sale of cars with combustion engines from 2035. This document changes the car industry and makes it dependent on electricity production. The problem identified in this article is the actual impact of implemented solutions concerning the type of engine in cars offered for sale in Czechia, Germany, and Poland. Therefore, the aim of this scientific paper is car engines' multilevel comparative analysis. The aim of the article is accompanied by a research question: are electric vehicles less harmful to the natural environment? The paper compares cars of the same producer, class, and type with petrol, diesel, hybrid (petrol-electric), and electric engines in terms of the environmental impact. The research method is a comparative SUV analysis supported by the comparison of selected countries' conditions for electromobility development. The results of this study indicate that vehicles with electric engines emit the least amount of carbon dioxide and are the most environmentally friendly solution in the given comparison criteria. The main purpose of this paper is to develop possible scenarios for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Serbia by switching from coal-fired to natural gas-fired electricity generation by the end of 2050. Accordingly, the challenges are to establish scenarios and identify measures that are best suited to all Western Balkan countries. In particular, this paper proposes a number of energy mix scenarios that offer some options for reducing CO2 emissions while maintaining an economic way of consumption. Projections of these reduction scenarios are obtained by combining the Kaya identity with the emission factor method. A simplified methodology based on sensitivity analysis is used as a source of data to estimate the nonstatistical uncertainty limits for the projections of the reduction scenarios. The sensitivity analysis is carried out using historical data from Serbia for the period from 1990 to 2019. In addition, a direct verification of the proposed methodology is performed based on historical data for 2020. The developed scenarios 1 and 2 show that CO2 emissions could be reduced by 10.94% and up to 74.44% from baseline in 1990, respectively. The obtained results are also contrasted with the data available for some other countries with similar experiences. Finally, it is found that the developed scenarios are achievable only at significantly decreased levels of coal-fired electricity generation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon dioxide flooding is a strategic replacement technology for greatly enhancing oil recovery in low-permeability oilfields, which includes social benefits resulting from carbon emission reduction and economic benefits owing to the improvement of oil recovery. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop and apply the technology of CO2 flooding and storage in the petroleum industry. In reservoir conditions, CO2 is usually under a supercritical state, presenting both low viscosity and high diffusivity of a gaseous state and high density of a liquid state. The special phase behavior of CO2 directly affects its extraction capacity, resulting in the change of miscible behavior between CO2 and crude oil. In this paper, the ultra-high-pressure–high-temperature pressure–volume–temperature (PVT) system was used to evaluate the phase characteristics of CO2 during the process of reservoir development. The phase behaviors of the CO2/CH4/N2 crude oil system were compared and analyzed. Moreover, the matching mechanism between supercritical CO2 characteristics and oil–gas system miscibility was investigated and defined. This work deepened the understanding of the phase characteristics of CO2 in the process of miscible flooding, providing both theoretical guidance for the application of CO2 injection on oilfields and the essential scientific basis for the implementation of CCUS-EOR technology.
