Recently, as the use of wearable devices and the demand for eco-friendly energy have increased, many studies have been conducted on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which can economically harvest energy. Paper is considered a promising substrate and frame material that can be used to manufacture self-powered TENGs, owing to its flexibility, low cost, and accessibility. Herein, we present a sandwich-structured foldable paper-based TENG (FP-TENG) that comprises flexible materials and uses paper as a substrate. The FP-TENG can generate up to 572 mW/m2 of power via contact–separation of the triboelectric electrified body at the top and bottom. With more folds of the FP-TENG, the triboelectric cross-sectional area increases, and, thus, the electrical output increases. In addition, the proposed TENG exhibits excellent durability without signal degradation under 5000 cycles of repeated pushing motions. To demonstrate its practicality, the FP-TENG was manufactured in the form of a wristwatch Velcro and connected to an electronic watch panel to supply power. Various deformations are possible with origami, and they can drive wristwatches through external forces. This paper presents an optimization method for scheduling a multi-energy VPP (Virtual Power Plant) supply–demand balance in the power market environment of Jiangxi Province. The primary objective of this method is to improve the operational efficiency of the power grid, reduce energy costs, and facilitate economical and efficient energy distribution in the power market. The method takes into account the characteristics and uncertainties of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy, and incorporates advanced multi-objective optimization algorithms. Furthermore, it integrates real-time market price feedback to achieve the accurate allocation of power supply and demand. Through a case study of a multi-energy VPP in Jiangxi Province, this paper examines the optimal combination model for various energy sources within VPP, and analyzes the impact of different market environments on supply–demand balance. The results demonstrate that the proposed scheduling optimization method significantly improves economic benefits while ensuring grid stability. The shared energy storage device acts as an energy hub between multiple microgrids to better play the complementary characteristics of the microgrid power cycle. In this paper, the cooperative operation process of shared energy storage participating in multiple island microgrid systems is researched, and the two-stage research on multi-microgrid operation mode and shared energy storage optimization service cost is focused on. In the first stage, the output of each subject is determined with the goal of profit optimization and optimal energy storage capacity, and the modified grey wolf algorithm is used to solve the problem. In the second stage, the income distribution problem is transformed into a negotiation bargaining process. The island microgrid and the shared energy storage are the two sides of the game. Combined with the non-cooperative game theory, the alternating direction multiplier method is used to reduce the shared energy storage service cost. The simulation results show that shared energy storage can optimize the allocation of multi-party resources by flexibly adjusting the control mode, improving the efficiency of resource utilization while improving the consumption of renewable energy, meeting the power demand of all parties, and realizing the sharing of energy storage resources. Simulation results show that compared with the traditional PSO algorithm, the iterative times of the GWO algorithm proposed in this paper are reduced by 35.62%, and the calculation time is shortened by 34.34%. The increasing use of renewable energy sources introduces significant fluctuations in power generation, demanding enhanced regulatory capabilities to maintain the balance between power supply and demand. To promote multi-energy coupling and the local consumption of renewable energy, integrated energy systems have become a focal point of multidisciplinary research. This study models adjustable sources, networks, and loads within electric–thermal integrated energy systems as energy storage entities, forming virtual energy storage systems to participate in the optimization and scheduling of integrated energy systems. This paper investigates the modeling and control strategies of virtual energy storage systems within electric–thermal integrated energy systems. Initially, it introduces the definition, logical architecture, and technical connotations of virtual energy storage. Next, it models temperature-controlled loads as virtual energy storage systems and compares them with traditional energy storage systems, analyzing their characteristic differences and summarizing virtual energy storage system modeling methods and characteristic indicators. This paper then focuses on the specific applications of virtual energy storage systems in four typical scenarios. Finally, it explores the future development directions of virtual energy storage. South Africa is currently experiencing an energy crisis because of a mismatch between energy supply and demand. Increasing energy demand necessitates the adequate operation of generation and transmission facilities to maintain the reliability of the power system. Transmission line compensation is used to increase the ability to transfer power, thereby enhancing system stability, voltage regulation, and reactive power balance. Also, in recent years, the introduction of renewable energy sources (RES) has proven to be effective in supporting the grid by providing additional energy. As a result, the dynamics of power systems have changed, and many developing nations are adopting the integration of renewable energy into the grid to increase the aspect ratio of the energy availability factor. While both techniques contribute to the grid's ability to meet energy demand, they frequently introduce technical challenges that affect the stability and protection of the systems. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the challenges introduced by transmission line compensation and the integration of renewable energy, as well as the various techniques proposed in the literature to address these issues. Different compensation techniques, including fault detection, classification, and location, for compensated and uncompensated transmission lines, including those connected to renewable energy sources, are reviewed. This paper then analyzes the adaptive distance protection schemes available in the literature to mitigate the impact of compensation/integration of RES into the grid. Based on the literature reviewed, it is essential for protection engineers to understand the dynamics introduced by network topology incorporating a combination of RES and heavily compensated transmission lines. This paper explores the significant role of Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) in achieving environmental sustainability, with a particular focus on enhancing energy efficiency, resource recovery, and water reuse. WWTPs are crucial for removing pollutants and recovering resources from wastewater, thereby protecting public health and biodiversity. However, they are also associated with high operational costs, substantial carbon footprints, and energy-intensive processes. This article delves into various strategies and technologies to overcome these challenges, aiming to transform WWTPs from energy consumers to energy-efficient resource recovery hubs. Techniques such as anaerobic digestion and the use of advanced oxidation processes and microbial fuel cells are investigated for their potential in energy recovery and efficiency enhancement. Success stories from around the globe are highlighted to demonstrate the feasibility of transitioning to energy-positive WWTP operations. The integration of water reuse systems is also discussed, highlighting recent advancements that enable treated wastewater to be repurposed for agricultural, industrial, and potable uses, thereby promoting sustainability and water conservation. Fossil energy consumption and environmental protection issues have pushed electric vehicles (EVs) to become one of the alternatives to traditional fossil-fuel vehicles. EV refers to a vehicle that uses electric energy as power and is driven by an electric motor. The electric energy of EVs is stored in batteries. When the EV is not traveling, the battery can provide power for other loads. Therefore, with the increase in the number of EVs and the load of the power grid, the EV-to-grid (V2G) mode, which uses EVs to supply power to the power grid, has gradually entered the field of vision of researchers. The physical connection mode, charge and discharge technology, and energy management strategy are the main topics of the current review papers; however, there is a lack of systematic research on V2G modeling, framework, and business models. This paper describes the concepts of the spatio-temporal distribution model and the adjustable capacity of EVs. In addition, common constraints and methods in optimization are introduced. Moreover, this paper introduces the interactive relationship among power grids, load aggregators, and EV users. Furthermore, the business model of V2G is introduced and analyzed from various perspectives. Finally, the future development of V2G is pointed out. The research problem of this paper is related to numerous open questions in the field of energy, its understanding, its use, and the challenges of the energy future. After the introductory part, in which a brief historical overview of energy literacy is provided, the paper focuses on energy literacy, its emergence, and the different approaches to its definition and measurement. The paper analyzes the energy literacy of students at the Faculty of Economics in Rijeka based on their cognitive, affective, and behavioral skills. Their knowledge about energy, energy processes, and the energy efficiency of the objects they encounter on a daily basis is examined. Their personal attitudes and values are examined through various forms of personal initiatives and active participation in energy sustainability projects. Finally, the habits and behavioral patterns that the respondents have in their daily lives and their tendencies to save energy resources and find energy-efficient solutions are examined. Despite some positive findings, the current results are not satisfactory and point to the creation of adequate public policies with a particular focus on education and the role of the corrective mechanisms of the state, but also the need for joint negotiations between policy makers, regulators, scientists, representatives of civil society, and the business community. The particular contribution of this work is reflected in being the first research of its kind conducted among Croatian economics students, as well as among Croatian students in general; in the creation of a research instrument that is conceptually consistent with the findings from the existing literature, but with an original set of questions within each energy literacy skill adapted to the cultural and sociological background of the respondents; and in a kind of progress from previous research by taking into account the quantitative aspect (in addition to the qualitative) assessment of the respondents' energy literacy. Microgrids have emerged as a pivotal solution in the quest for efficient, resilient, and sustainable energy systems. Comprising diverse distributed energy resources, microgrids present a compelling opportunity to revolutionize how we generate, store, and distribute electricity, while simultaneously reducing carbon footprints. This paper proposes an optimal battery energy storage system (BESS) management scheme, along with capacitor placement for reactive power (Q)-compensation, and scheduling for the purpose of a renewable-based microgrid's loss minimization. The proposed model evaluates the impact of BESS management on energy efficiency and analyzes how optimal scheduling of BESS influences system losses. Furthermore, it investigates the coordinated planning and operation of active assets within the microgrid, such as controllable capacitor banks, in enhancing overall efficiency. The model is formulated as a mixed-integer second-order cone programming (MISOCP) problem which is solved for both deterministic and stochastic generation and consumption data. The proposed model is tested on a 21-bus microgrid comprising photovoltaic and hydropower energy resources, and the efficacy of the model is approved by several case studies. The simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce microgrid energy losses by approximately 12 percent using the deterministic approach and around 14 percent with the stochastic approach. The rapid progress in renewable energy sources and the increasing complexity of energy distribution networks have highlighted the need for efficient and intelligent energy management systems. This paper presents a comparative analysis of two optimisation algorithms, P and M70, used for the optimal control of the operation of microgrids in islanded mode. The main objective is to minimise production costs while ensuring a reliable energy supply. Algorithm P prioritises the use of photovoltaic (PV) and battery storage and operates the diesel generator at minimum capacity to reduce fuel consumption and maximise the use of renewable energy sources. Algorithm M70, on the other hand, uses a heuristic approach to adaptively manage energy resources in real time. In this study, the performance of both algorithms is evaluated through simulation in different operating scenarios. The results show that both algorithms significantly improve the efficiency of the microgrid, with the M70 algorithm showing better adaptability and cost efficiency in dynamic environments. The operation of the utility grid is being reshaped by the continuous addition of distributed energy resources and advanced metering infrastructure, which challenge existing grid control strategies. Some utilities deploy advanced distribution management systems (ADMS) to assist with the consolidation of various applications and to augment situational awareness in response to the new power delivery dynamics. An ADMS is an integrated software platform that provides utilities with a way to enhance their reliability, control, and optimization with advanced applications, such as volt/VAR optimization (VVO). A VVO application could serve as a vehicle to deliver cost savings by providing the utility with a method to reduce rates by controlling the voltage and decreasing the energy usage in their service territory. Some utilities are reluctant to integrate an ADMS, because it is a significant investment that requires approval from the public regulatory commission and/or their customers. This paper evaluates the impact on VVO performance when using a lower-quality network model supplemented with additional measurements, which could provide an implementation for cost savings. The results show that a better model quality would provide the highest energy savings; however, some level of telemetry is necessary in all scenarios to prevent voltage exceedances. Virtual power plants (VPPs) aggregate a large number of distributed energy resources (DERs) through IoT technology to provide flexibility to the grid. It is an effective means to promote the utilization of renewable energy, and enable carbon neutrality for future power systems. This paper addresses the evaluation issue of DERs' low-carbon benefits, proposes a flexibility assessment model for self-organized VPP to quantify the low-carbon value of DERs' response behavior in different time periods. Firstly, we introduce the definition of zero-carbon index based on the curve simultaneous rate of renewable energy and load demand. Then, we establish a multi-level self-organized aggregation method for virtual power plants, define the basic rules of DER, and characterize its self-organized aggregation as a Markov game process. Moreover, we use QMIX to achieve a bottom-up, hierarchical construction of VPP from simple to complex. Experimental results show that when users track the zero-carbon curve, they can achieve zero carbon emissions without reducing the overall load, significantly enhancing the grid's regulation capabilities and the consumption of renewable energy. Demand-side response (DR) and energy storage system (ESS) are both important means of providing operational flexibility to the power system. Thus, DR has a certain substitution role for ESS, but unlike DR, ESS planning has a coupling relationship between years, which makes it difficult to guarantee the reasonableness of the ESS planning results by considering only a single year. To achieve the optimal construction timing of ESS, this paper develops a consecutive year-by-year framework integrating DR and ESS to analyse and quantify the substitution effect of DR on energy storage while realizing year-by-year ESS planning. Our methods are as follows: (1) A consecutive year-by-year DR model and an ESS model are proposed; (2) These two models are combined together to achieve the purpose of considering DR in the ESS planning stage. Here, system reserve, renewable energy consumption, and preservation of power supply are given consideration to optimise the reliability and economy of the system; (3) The method is validated using a provincial real-world power grid in the eastern part of China. With the continuous development of large-scale wind and photovoltaic power worldwide, the net load fluctuation of systems is increasing, thereby imposing higher demands for power supply assurance and new energy consumption capacity within emerging power systems. It is imperative to establish a quantifiable and efficient model for planning new power systems, to propose an analytical approach for determining optimal evolutionary paths, and to advance research on flexible resource planning across wide areas. In this paper, based on the simplified operating characteristics of multi-type flexible resources, a source-grid-load-storage collaborative planning and evolution analysis framework is established. Secondly, the lowest total cost of the whole life cycle of the system is taken as the optimization goal, the multiple flexible resource investment decisions and production operation constraints of various flexible resources on all sides of the system are considered, and the source-grid-load-storage planning model is established. Then, through the investment decision-making strategy setting of the system in different planning level years, the evolutionary path analysis method of the whole life cycle economy and weighted environmental protection benefit of the system is given. Finally, by taking the sending-end power grid in Gansu Province as an example, a case study is carried out. Calculations of new energy, key channels within the province, energy storage capacity, and load-side response capacity requirements for 2025, 2030, and 2060 are optimized. Based on the above analysis, the optimal evolution path of the power grid is proposed. When considering the weighted benefits of economy and environmental protection, the greater the weight of environmental protection benefits, the greater the possibility of choosing a radical scheme. Increasing energy security is a crucial component of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Three main factors influence energy security: (1) the efficiency of resource use in energy production, (2) the extent of energy losses, and (3) the use of new energy sources. Novel food products can impact these factors, and this paper explores whether they are being studied in the context of reducing energy consumption. Specifically, we investigate the role of technical progress and know-how in the creation and development of novel food products and whether novel methods of food production using artificial intelligence aim to reduce energy expenditures while improving product quality, variety, and the use of new energy sources. This paper seeks to examine the impact determinants of novel foods on energy security, considering economic, technological, social, and environmental aspects of knowledge about new food. To implement the study, the relevant international literature published in the past ten years have been reviewed and methods of modeling, visualization, and descriptive statistics applied. The review is structured into three sections: the first section presents ways to save energy and other resources in the food production chain through the intensive use of artificial intelligence tools; the second section presents the development of novel food products; and the last section presents marketing challenges for novel foods. The findings show that the topic addressed by this paper is currently critical, with many authorities, research centers, food producers, and energy producers interested. However, the research problem remains open, as a systematic review of secondary sources revealed little knowledge of the topic under study, and each author's study presents a new solution. Recently, the generalization of P2P (peer-to-peer) technology with enhanced security due to blockchain technology and the expansion of renewable energy-based distributed energy resources have led to blockchain technology being applied in power transactions, thus giving the potential to become a new platform for DC microgrid operation. Meanwhile, the voltage of a DC microgrid represents the balance of energy supply and demand and also serves as a stability index. The balance is represented as a steady state; the stability is represented during and after events. This paper examines the stability of the DC microgrid built on a university campus in Korea and, in particular, the blockchain technology-based power transactions performed in the DC microgrid. The test is based on the pre-planned transaction schedule applied in the DC microgrid. The transaction schedule has used day-ahead and real-time bidding data. Although many technologies are included in the project, this paper focuses on the voltage stability of the DC microgrid. In addition, the DC protection is applied and evaluated. To consider general DC protection, the DC breaker was simplified with several IGBTs, diodes, capacitors, and arrestors and was designed to interrupt the fault current within five milliseconds. Wave energy has a high energy density and strong predictability, presenting encouraging prospects for development. So far, there are dozens of different wave energy devices (WECs), but the mechanism that ultimately converts wave energy into electrical energy in these devices has always been the focus of research by scholars from various countries. The energy conversion mechanism in wave energy devices is called PTO (power take-off). According to different working principles, PTOs can be classified into the linear motor type, hydraulic type, and mechanical type. Hydraulic PTOs are characterized by their high efficiency, low cost, and simple installation. They are widely used in the energy conversion links of various wave energy devices. However, apart from experimental methods, there is currently almost no concise numerical method to predict and evaluate the power generation performance of hydraulic PTO. Therefore, based on the working principle of hydraulic PTO, this paper proposes a numerical method to simulate the performance of a hydraulic PTO using MATLAB(2018b) Simulink®. Using a point-absorption wave energy device as a carrier, a float hydraulic system power-generation numerical model is built. The method is validated by comparison with previous experimental results. The predicted power generation and conversion efficiency of the point-absorption wave energy device under different regular and irregular wave conditions are compared. Key factors affecting the power generation performance of the device were investigated, providing insight for the subsequent optimal design of the device, which is of great significance to the development and utilization of wave energy resources. The popularity of nuclear power as a high-availability energy source is increasing in countries that currently rely on coal-based energy. The growing use of renewable energy sources emphasizes the need for greater energy supply security and grid stability. However, nuclear reactors remain the most expensive commercially available power-generation technology, which limits investment in this field. This paper explores the feasibility of investing in Coal-to-Nuclear conversion at selected coal-fired power plant sites in Poland. By converting coal-fired infrastructure, it is possible to reduce the financial cost of constructing a nuclear power plant. The study included an analysis of hydrological conditions from 2010 to 2023 at selected locations, which determined the potential for siting high-power nuclear reactors. An analytical model was used to calculate the required water intake for cooling, and the results were compared with actual river flow measurements. The findings suggested that constructing an inland nuclear power plant in Poland is feasible while complying with legal standards regarding maximum cooling water temperature. Automatic distribution master stations (ADMSs) are software platforms that can be used to monitor energy supply and consumption of power demand-side resources as well as to guarantee grid security. They play a vital role in maintaining the optimal performance and stability of electrical power systems. However, the stability of ADMSs is usually determined by the performance of the information interaction, which includes various challenges and complexities. Therefore, an efficient multiple-indicator filtering-based information interaction evaluation method for the ADMS is proposed in this paper. The proposed method first utilizes the principal component analysis (PCA) to filter the indicators of the ADMS. Then, the data envelopment method and the analytic network process (ANP) are employed to remove the invalid indicators and to determine the indicator weights. In this regard, the secondary screening of the indicators is completed, the effective indicators are obtained, and the accuracy of the evaluation system is improved. Results of the simulation show that the proposed method works well when evaluating information interaction performance, and it offers satisfactory performance evaluation of ADMSs. With the development of the economy and society, the importance of a secure and stable electricity supply continues to increase. However, the power grid is facing the test of excess installed capacity, the waste of renewable energy, and a low comprehensive utilization rate. This problem stems from the inconsistent peak–valley differences between power production and consumption, and the lack of clear electricity price signals, which disrupts the safe and stable operation of the power market. This paper combines the interactive transactions among clean energy power generation companies, users, and energy storage, explores how the system optimization model can be reflected in the power market through regulatory measures, and formulates the optimal output scheme of the system under the constraints of clean energy power generation forecast data, user base load forecast data, demand-side resource regulation ability, and energy storage system regulation ability to achieve the goals of comprehensive clean energy power consumption and minimum cost for users. A comprehensive analysis of the proposed model was conducted using actual data from a certain province in China, the results show that the consumption of clean energy will increase by 3% to full consumption and the total cost of users will be 32% lower than that of time-of-use (TOU) power prices, which proves the potential of the proposed joint optimization model in absorbing clean energy and the effectiveness of the market mechanism. Behind the meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DERs), such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery energy storage systems (BESSs), and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructures, have experienced significant growth in residential locations. Accurate load forecasting is crucial for the efficient operation and management of these resources. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art technologies and models employed in the load forecasting process of BTM DERs in recent years. The review covers a wide range of models, from traditional approaches to machine learning (ML) algorithms, discussing their applicability. A rigorous validation process is essential to ensure the model's precision and reliability. Cross-validation techniques can be utilized to reduce overfitting risks, while using multiple evaluation metrics offers a comprehensive assessment of the model's predictive capabilities. Comparing the model's predictions with real-world data helps identify areas for improvement and further refinement. Additionally, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has recently announced its plan to collect electricity consumption data from identified U.S.-based crypto mining companies, which can exhibit abnormal energy consumption patterns due to rapid fluctuations. Hence, some real-world case studies have been presented that focus on irregular energy consumption patterns in residential buildings equipped with BTM DERs. These abnormal activities underscore the importance of implementing robust anomaly detection techniques to identify and address such deviations from typical energy usage profiles. Thus, our proposed framework, presented in residential buildings equipped with BTM DERs, considering smart meters (SMs). Finally, a thorough exploration of potential challenges and emerging models based on artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) is suggested as a promising approach. With the urgent global need to limit warming to 2 °C as well as a localized need in our case study to address rising energy demand amid electrical and thermal network limitations, a critical examination of demand-side energy reductions and the concept of energy sufficiency is needed. This paper contributes to the sparse literature on bottom-up analysis by utilizing Iceland—a leader in renewable energy generation—as a case study to explore the socio-economic factors influencing energy footprints. Our findings reveal significant energy footprints across various consumption domains, particularly housing and mobility, influenced by income levels, urbanization, and lifestyle choices. Today, electricity tariffs play an essential role in the electricity retail market as they are the key factor for the decision-making of end-users. Additionally, tariffs are necessary for increasing competition in the electricity market. They have a great impact on load energy management. Moreover, tariffs are not taken as a fixed approach to expense calculations only but are influenced by many other factors, such as electricity generation, transmission, distribution costs, and governmental taxation. Thus, electricity pricing differs significantly between countries or between regions within a country. Improper tariff calculation methodologies in some areas have led to high-power losses, unnecessary investments, increased operational expenses, and environmental pollution due to the non-use of available sustainable energy resources. Due to the importance of electricity tariffs, the authors of this paper have been inspired to review all electricity tariff designs used worldwide. In this paper, 103 references from the last ten years are reviewed, showing a detailed comparison between different tariff designs and demonstrating their main advantages and drawbacks. Additionally, this paper reviews the utilized electricity tariffs in different countries, focusing on one of the most important countries in the Middle East and North Africa regions (Egypt). Finally, some recommended solutions based upon the carried-out research are discussed and applied to the case study for electricity tariff improvement in this region. This paper examines normality in time series econometrics for a sustainable energy transition. By analysing data from January 1997 to December 2021, this study integrates macroeconomic, environmental, and energy data to gain insights into the potential changes in daily commuting patterns among Slovenians. Various methods, including unit root tests such as the augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF), Kwiatkowski–Phillips–Schmidt–Shin (KPSS), and Zivot–Andrews (Z-A), as well as other tests, are employed. Additionally, the vector autoregressive (VAR) model, Granger Causality and regression analysis determine the impact. This paper contributes to uncovering valuable information within data from macrovariables using macroeconometric techniques. It also provides insights that can support evidence-based decision-making for sustainable energy transition policies in Slovenia. The results of the normality tests indicate that most macro variables are integrated; there is a need for a careful analysis of integration levels and appropriate testing methods. These findings have implications for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners in economics, the environment, and energy supply. At the same time, this research highlights that gross domestic product, unemployment, inflation, and carbon dioxide positively impact car usage among Slovenians, while gasoline prices and commuters have a negative one. The energy transition to a decarbonized energy scenario leads toward distributed energy resources in which end users can both generate and consume renewable electricity. As a result, several challenges arise in terms of decentralized energy resource management and grid reliability. With microgrids, the cooperation of distributed energy resources is improved, and with peer-to-peer energy exchange and demand response programs, better energy allocation and flexible management of consumption loads according to the needs of supply systems are achieved. However, effective peer-to-peer energy allocation and flexible demand management in microgrids require the development of market structures, pricing mechanisms, and demand response strategies enabled by a reliable communication system. In this field, blockchain offers a decentralized communication tool for energy transactions that can provide transparency, security, and immutability. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive review of key factors for peer-to-peer energy trading and flexible energy demand management in blockchain-enabled microgrids. The goal is to provide guidelines on the basic components that are useful in ensuring efficient operation of microgrids. Global energy consumption has led to concerns about potential supply problems, energy consumption and growing environmental impacts. This paper comprehensively provides a detailed assessment of current studies on the subject of building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technology in net-zero energy buildings (NZEBs). The review is validated through various case studies, which highlight the significance of factors such as building surface area to volume ratio (A/V), window-wall ratio (WWR), glass solar heating gain coefficient (SHGC), and others in achieving the NZEBs standards. In addition, this review article draws the following conclusions: (1) NZEBs use renewable energy to achieve energy efficiency and carbon neutrality. (2) NZEBs implementation, however, has some limitations, including the negligence of indoor conditions in the analysis, household thermal comfort, and the absence of an energy supply and demand monitoring system. (3) Most researchers advise supplementing facade and window BIPV as solely roofing BIPV will not be able to meet the building's electricity usage. (4) Combining BIPV with building integrated solar thermal (BIST), considering esthetics and geometry, enhances outcomes and helps meet NZEB criteria. (5) BIPV designs should follow standards and learn from successful cases. However, to ascertain the long-term reliability and structural integrity of BIPV systems, a comprehensive study of their potential degradation mechanisms over extended periods is imperative. Distributed energy resources have been increasingly integrated into electrical grids. Consequently, electricity markets are expected to undergo changes and become more complex. However, while there are many scientific publications on the topic, a broader discussion is still necessary. Therefore, a systematic literature review on electricity markets in the context of distributed energy resources integration was conducted in this paper to present in-depth discussions on the topic, along with shedding light on current perspectives, the most relevant sources, authors, papers, countries, metrics, and indexes. The software R and its open-source tool Bibliometrix were used to perform the systematic literature review based on the widely recognized databases Web of Science and Scopus, which led to a total of 1685 articles after removing duplicates. The results demonstrate that demand response, renewable energy, uncertainty, optimization, and smart grid are the most-used keywords. By assessing highly impactful articles on the theme, emphasis on energy storage systems becomes clear compared to distributed generation and electric vehicles. However, electric vehicles draw attention in terms of citations. Furthermore, multi-level stochastic programming is the most-applied methodology among highly impactful articles. Due to the relevance of the demand response keyword, this paper also conducts a specific review on the topic aligned with electricity markets and distributed energy resources (296 articles). The results demonstrate that virtually all high-impact publications on the topic address day-ahead or real-time pricing. Based on the literature found, this paper presents a discussion on the main challenges and future perspectives related to the field. The complexity of electrical power systems and electricity markets is increasing substantially according to what this study found. Distributed generation development is already advanced, while energy storage systems and electric vehicles are limited in many countries. Peer-to-peer electricity trading and virtual power plant are newer concepts that are currently incipient, and DR programs showcase an intermediate stage of evolution. Renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and photovoltaics are the key to an environmentally friendly energy supply. However, their volatile power output is challenging in regard to supply security. Therefore, flexible energy systems with storage capabilities are crucial for the expansion of renewable energy sources since they allow storing off-demand produced power and reconverting and supplying it on-demand. For this purpose, a novel power plant concept is presented where high-temperature energy storage (HTES) is integrated between the recuperator and the combustor of a conventional micro gas turbine (MGT). It is used to store renewable energy in times of oversupply, which is later used to reduce fuel demand during MGT operation. Hereby, pollutant emissions are reduced significantly, while the power grid is stabilized. This paper presents a numerical process simulation study, aiming to examine the influence of different storage temperatures and load profiles of HTES on the MGT performance (e.g., fuel consumption, efficiency). Furthermore, relevant operating points and their process parameters such as pressures, temperatures, and mass-flow rates are derived. As operation conditions for the combustor are strongly influenced by the HTES, the paper contains a detailed theoretical analysis of the impact on combustor operability and includes an experimental investigation of the first combustor design adapted for the compound and tested under higher inlet temperatures conditions. The work proposes a technique to improve the infrastructure and energy resilience of new developments during the planning stage. Several resilience-related parameters are developed in this paper that can be used to quantify resilience. To apply these parameters, the work assumes various energy outage scenarios varying from less than 24 h to 3 weeks. During these scenarios, a neighborhood population can be relocated to several public buildings promoting better utilization of onsite energy resources. The technique is applied to four representative neighborhoods encompassing various sustainability measures including clean energy. Further, this paper demonstrates an urban scale improvement technique for greater energy and infrastructure resilience. The results indicate a significant improvement in infrastructure resilience by relocating public shelter buildings on the main street intersections so that these can be easily accessible during energy outages or disaster events. Energy resilience can be achieved by the appropriate design of onsite energy resources to eliminate vulnerabilities. For instance, 8.8% to 15.4% of additional land for solar thermal collectors can eliminate thermal energy vulnerabilities. When surplus generation from onsite resources is twice or more as compared to demand during their unavailability, the electrical vulnerability can be eliminated by employing suitable battery banks in various buildings. In order to achieve the flexible and efficient utilization of distributed energy resources, microgrids (MGs) can enhance the self-healing capability of distribution systems. Conventional primary droop control in microgrids exhibits deviations in voltage and frequency and lacks research on voltage–frequency control during network reconfiguration. Therefore, this paper investigates the control strategy of secondary control for voltage and frequency during the process of reconstructing distribution networks to operate in the form of microgrids after faults. Firstly, the mathematical model of three-phase voltage-source inverters with droop control is analyzed. Then, inspired by the generator's secondary frequency control strategy, an improved secondary control method based on droop control is proposed, and the effectiveness of the improved droop control strategy is verified. Finally, simulation examples of distribution networks with various dynamic boundary topology changes are designed to simulate a relatively stable control result, validating the proposed strategy. The green transition is a challenge for the Polish economy and energy sector. In this paper, the expert method of analysis was applied and findings revealed that the challenges and prerequisites for an effective transformation of the power sector mainly include technical, technological and organizational issues of energy production and use. The provision of electricity at competitive prices and with a low carbon footprint, for individual consumers and industry, is a prerequisite for maintaining the well-being of the population and ensuring the competitiveness of domestically produced goods. The ambitious climate policy goals of the European Union require immediate action and call for radical changes in the Polish energy sector; in the coming years, it must drastically reduce the amount of energy produced from fossil fuels and replace it with so-called green energy from renewable sources. The main purpose of this article was to highlight the need to modify Poland's energy policy until 2040 in order to make it more consistent with the ambitious climate goals of the European Union. This article also shows that Poland's energy transition must include a shift from fossil fuels to renewables, while ensuring that energy security is stabilized by the current energy and generation resources. Reducing the heat demand of existing buildings is an essential prerequisite for achieving a greenhouse gas-neutral energy supply. Numerous studies and open-source tools deal with heat demand mapping. It is not uncommon that estimated heat demands deviate from real heat consumption, so existing approaches should be improved by including in-depth building information. Some tools have recognised this problem and offer built-in functions for factoring various parameters into their assessments. Nevertheless, the necessary information is usually missing and should be obtained first. In this paper, we analyse the impact of thermal refurbishment and climate on building heat demand; hence, generate public datasets with corresponding key figures for each building type in different efficiency states and years. Accounting for already performed refurbishments in methodologies for assessing the actual state heat demand for cities will result in a reduction of at least 8% up to more than 21%, depending on whether conventional or passive house components were installed. As a result of climatic differences within Germany, a building's heat demand can be up to 39% higher or up to 21% lower than the heat demand of an identical building in the reference climate of Germany. By further developing the approaches of the tools Hotmaps and Heat Cadastre Hamburg, we could improve the estimated heat demand of Hamburg to a value approximating the real consumption. Formulating energy policies at national, European, and global levels is extremely challenging. The move away from fossil fuels is associated with a variety of technological, economic, and social implications, each of which is subject to dynamic changes and societal scrutiny and can hardly be predicted with certainty. Therefore, a fact-based assessment for the path to a sustainable green energy future is sought out in this paper, using the road-based mobility sector of the Federal Republic of Germany as an example. The analysis performed in this paper is built on publicly accessible, reputable sources like DESTATIS and EUROSTAT. In addition, some very simple calculations were made, e.g., on the potential for wind and photovoltaic energy within Germany. Such an analysis needs to start with the overall energy consumption of any one country. A basic assumption of the paper is that the energy system of the future will be based to a large extent on electricity and its storage in chemical energy. It is assumed that, in addition to hydrogen, liquid energy sources will play a significant role due to the simplicity of their logistics and the subsequent implications on cost. Examples of green, electricity-based fuels with great potential are methanol, methane, and ammonia. Additionally, biomass plays an important role, either for direct use as a fuel or as a source of non-fossil carbon. Today, biofuels, i.e., biodiesel and bioethanol, deliver the largest contribution to climate protection in the EU transport sector. The main goal—the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions—often collides with geopolitical circumstances or national political necessities. This includes, for example, the current world market situation and its national impacts caused by the Russian attack on Ukraine. The prospect for a green, sustainable, and defossilized energy supply are discussed in this context. The solar energy supply system has played an increasingly substantial role in realizing nearly zero-carbon buildings. In order to overcome the impact of solar randomness on the energy supply of a distributed solar system, this paper proposes a solar tri-generation supply system which integrates a photovoltaic/thermal collector (PV/T), a heat pump (HP), and an absorption chiller (AC). The PV/T-HP integration system is adopted to provide stable heating for a building and AC. The system model is established in TRNSYS software, and its performance is evaluated based on energy, exergy, and economic aspects. The results demonstrate that the system effectively meets the load demand, with an energy efficiency of 32.98% and an exergy efficiency of 17.62%. The payback period (PP) is 7.77 years. Compared with the systems proposed in the other literature, the performance of the proposed system has a certain extent of advantage. Furthermore, the equipment and system exergy performance decline with an increase in the intensity of solar radiation. Increasing the PV/T area effectively improves the system's profitability within the actual roof area limitation of the building. Moreover, increasing the capacity of the low-temperature heat pump after 68 kW improves the system efficiency and reduces the payback period. Energy efficiency programs funded by utility customers provide an electricity resource in most U.S. states, but their scale and cost of saving electricity varies significantly by state. In this paper, we explore the drivers of the cost of saved electricity in these programs with an econometric model and nearly a decade of data reported by efficiency program administrators. We found strong evidence for economies of scale and weak evidence for diseconomies of scale, which suggests that states with low levels of efficiency savings relative to retail sales can increase the size of their efficiency programs without large increases to the cost of saved electricity. We discuss examples of energy efficiency forecasting and potential modeling in light our econometric analysis and identify methodological improvements relevant to utilities and grid operators. An energy supply and demand forecasting system can help decision-makers grasp more comprehensive information, make accurate decisions and even plan a carbon-neutral future when adjusting energy structure, developing alternative energy resources and so on. This paper presents a hierarchical design of an energy supply and demand forecasting system based on web crawler and a grey dynamic model called GM(1,1) which covers all the process of data collection, data analysis and data prediction. It mainly consists of three services, namely Crawler Service (CS), Algorithm Service (AS), Data Service (DS). The architecture of multiple loose coupling services makes the system flexible in more data, and more advanced prediction algorithms for future energy forecasting works. In order to make higher prediction accuracy based on GM(1,1), this paper illustrates some basic enhanced methods and their combinations with adaptable variable weights. An implementation for testing the system was applied, where the model was set up for coal, oil and natural gas separately, and the enhanced GM was better with relative error about 9.18% than original GM on validation data between 2010 and 2020. Global energy consumption is growing rapidly, with the frequency and intensity of extreme events constantly increasing, posing a long-term threat to power supply and consumption. Therefore, analyzing the spatiotemporal characteristics of electricity consumption and quantitatively assessing the impact of extreme events on electricity consumption are of great significance. Based on fine-grained electricity consumption data from Europe for the years 2019–2022, this paper employs a data mining perspective and four methods including Z-score, Isolation Forest, Local Outlier Factor, and Autoencoder to detect abnormal electricity consumption during extreme events. Additionally, it combines indicators such as elastic loss, vulnerability, and duration to measure the impact of extreme events on electricity consumption. It is found that low temperatures could lead to abrupt changes in electricity consumption, with Northern Europe being more significantly affected by low temperatures. The COVID-19 pandemic had the most significant impact on electricity consumption in Europe, with the middle part of Europe being the hardest hit during the first wave of the pandemic. Electricity anomalies during the pandemic period were related to national pandemic control policies and exhibited some lag. The coupling between multiple energy sources such as electricity, gas, and heat is strengthened in an integrated energy system (IES), and this, in turn, improves the operational flexibility of the IES. As an upper-level energy supply system, an IES can play a role as virtual energy storage, which can provide regulating power to smooth out the volatility from large-scale renewable energy generation. The establishment of an aggregating virtual energy storage model for IESs has become an important issue. Under this background, a multi-objective optimization-based adjustable capacity evaluation method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the mathematical model of an IES considering the coupling of multiple kinds of energy forms is proposed. Then, an aggregating model considering demand response and economic constraints is established to demonstrate the adjustable capacity of the IES. In addition, multi-objective optimization is used to identify parameters in the proposed model, and the normal boundary intersection (NBI) method is used to solve the problem. Finally, a simulation example is provided to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method. The external energy demand boundary of the IES can be modeled as virtual energy storage, and the coupling relations of electricity and gas can be presented. The regional energy system (RES) is a system that consumes multiple forms of energy in the region and achieves coordinated and efficient utilization of energy resources. The RES is composed of multiple micro energy systems (MESs); however, due to the mismatch of energy resources and different energy consumption within each MES, a large amount of clean energy is wasted, and each MES has to acquire extra energy. This significantly increases operation costs and contributes to environmental pollution. One of the promising ways to solve this problem is to deploy an energy storage system in the RES, which can make use of its advantages to transfer energy in space-time and fulfill the demand for loads in different periods, and conduct unified energy management for each MES in the RES. Nevertheless, a large number of users are deterred by the high investment in energy storage devices. A shared energy storage system (SESS) can allow multi-MESs to share one energy storage system, and meet the energy storage needs of different systems, to reduce the capital investment of energy storage systems and realize efficient consumption of clean energy. Taking multiple MESs as the object, this paper proposes a model and collaborative optimal strategy of energy management for the RES to accomplish high utilization of clean energy, environmental friendliness, and economy. First, the paper analyzes the internal energy supply characteristics of the RES and develops a model of the RES with an SESS. Then, the paper poses the management concept of load integration and unified energy distribution by using the operational information of each subsystem. An optimal operation strategy is established to minimize daily operation costs and achieve economic, environmentally friendly, and efficient operation of the RES. Third, by setting up scenarios such as no energy storage system and an independent energy storage system (IESS) of each MES and SESS, a case of a science and education park in Guangzhou, China, is illustrated for experiments. Numerical experiment results show that with an SESS built by the investor in the RES and applying the mentioned energy management strategy, the utilization of clean energy can be 100%, the operation costs can be reduced by up to 9.78%, the pollutant emission can be reduced by 3.92%, and the peak-to-valley difference can be decreased by 20.03%. Finally, the influence of energy storage service fees and electricity tariffs on daily operation costs is discussed, and the operation suggestions of the SESS are proposed. Conventional power systems have been heavily dependent on fossil fuel to meet the increasing energy demand due to exponential population growth and diverse technological advancements. This paper presents an optimal energy model and power management of an off-grid distributed energy system (DES) capable of providing sustainable and economic power supply to electrical loads. The paper models and co-optimizes multi-energy generations as a central objective for reliable and economic power supply to electrical loads while simultaneously satisfying a set of system and operational parameters. In addition, mixed integer nonlinear programing (MINLP) optimization technique is exploited to maximize power system generation between interconnected energy sources and dynamic electrical load with highest reliability and minimum operational and emission costs. Due to frequent battery cycling operation in the DES, rainflow algorithm is applied to the optimization result to estimate the depth of discharge (DOD) and subsequently count the number of cycles. The validity and performance of the power management strategy is evaluated with an aggregate load demand scenario of sixty households as a benchmark in a MATLAB program. The simulation results indicate the capability and effectiveness of optimal DES model through an enhanced MINLP optimization program in terms of significant operational costs and emission reduction of the diesel generator (DG). Specifically, the deployment of DES minimizes the daily operational cost by 71.53%. The results further indicate a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions, with 22.76% reduction for the residential community load scenario in contrast to the exclusive DG system. This study provides a framework on the economic feasibility and effective planning of green energy systems (GESs) with efficient optimization techniques with capability for further development. The reduction of carbon emissions from the energy industry chain and the coordinated development of the energy supply chain have attracted widespread attention. This paper conducts a systematic review of the existing literature on the energy industry chain and energy supply chain. In addition, the studies of coordinated operation mechanisms, risk control and the impact of government policies on the energy supply chain still have some shortcomings. Two interconnected AC microgrids are proposed based on three renewable energy sources (RESs): wind, solar, and biogas. The wind turbine drives a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). A solar photovoltaic system (SPVS) with an appropriate inverter was incorporated. The biogas genset (BG) consists of a biogas engine coupled with a synchronous generator. Two interconnected AC microgrids, M1 and M2, were considered for study in this work. The microgrid M2 is connected to a diesel engine (DE) characterized by a continuous power supply. The distribution power loss of the interconnected AC microgrids comprises in line loss. The M1 and M2 losses are modeled as an objective function (OF). The power quality enhancement of the interconnected microgrids will be achieved by minimizing this OF. This research also created a unique frequency control method called virtual inertia control (VIC), which stabilizes the microgrid frequency using an optimal controller. In this paper, the following five controllers are studied: a proportional integral controller (PI), a fractional order PI controller (FOPI), a fuzzy PI controller (FPI), a fuzzy fractional order PI controller (FFOPI), and a VIC based on FFOPI controller. The five controllers were tuned using particle swarm optimization (PSO) to minimize the (OF). The main contribution of this paper is the comprehensive study of the performance of interconnected AC microgrids under step load disturbances, step changes in wind/solar input power, and eventually grid following/forming contingencies as well as the virtual inertia control of renewable energy resources used in the structure of the microgrids. For the multi-energy power system composed of thermal power, wind power, and a pumped-storage power station aiming at minimizing coal consumption of the power grid, an optimal dispatch model is established in this paper. Its advantage is to allow the power grid to accept a high proportion of new energy while ensuring power demand. The dynamic programming method is used to solve the problem. In the solution process, the traditional dynamic programming method is improved by introducing the penalty function and the dynamic value of the state variable, which can ensure the reliability of the power supply while achieving the optimization goal, as well as realize the full utilization of energy. Using the example of a high proportion of wind power systems with a pumped-storage power station as the energy storage mode and considering the relevant constraints after the heating transformation of the thermal power plant, our built model solves these challenges. The results show that when the maximum pumping power of the pumped-storage power station reaches 1138 MW and the maximum generating power reaches 755 MW, the wind curtailment and power rationing during the off-peak period of heating can be reduced from the previous 58,158 MWH and 46,838 MWH to almost 0, and the wind curtailment and power rationing during the peak period of heating can be reduced from the previous 77,656 MWH and 53,780 MWH to almost 0, so as to realize the flexible operation of the power grid. Traditional charging stations have a single function, which usually does not consider the construction of energy storage facilities, and it is difficult to promote the consumption of new energy. With the gradual increase in the number of new energy vehicles (NEVs), to give full play to the complementary advantages of source-load resources and provide safe, efficient, and economical energy supply services, this paper proposes the optimal operation strategy of a PV-charging-hydrogenation composite energy station (CES) that considers demand response (DR). Firstly, the operation mode of the CES is analyzed, and the CES model, including a photovoltaic power generation system, fuel cell, hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, hydrogenation, and charging, is established. The purpose is to provide energy supply services for electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCVs) at the same time. Secondly, according to the travel law of EVs and HFCVs, the distribution of charging demand and hydrogenation demand at different periods of the day is simulated by the Monte Carlo method. On this basis, the following two demand response models are established: charging load demand response based on the price elasticity matrix and interruptible load demand response based on incentives. Finally, a multi-objective optimal operation model considering DR is proposed to minimize the comprehensive operating cost and load fluctuation of CES, and the maximum–minimum method and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) are used to transform this into a linearly weighted single-objective function, which is solved via an improved moth–flame optimization algorithm (IMFO). Through the simulation examples, operation results in four different scenarios are obtained. Compared with a situation not considering DR, the operation strategy proposed in this paper can reduce the comprehensive operation cost of CES by CNY 1051.5 and reduce the load fluctuation by 17.8%, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed model. In addition, the impact of solar radiation and energy recharge demand changes on operations was also studied, and the resulting data show that CES operations were more sensitive to energy recharge demand changes. The world is facing severe environmental challenges as it heavily relies on a USD 100 trillion fossil-fuel-based economy. Its transition from a fuel-intensive to a material-intensive economy is not well understood. The conventional energy resources are responsible for the excessive generation of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions resulting in increased environmental degradation owing to climate change. The human impact has been cited as highly indisputable in this respect. Pakistan is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries highly suffering from such increased impact of climate change and, thus, has been warned against the excessive use of conventional resources. As such, in the premises of Pakistan, conventional products are being excessively utilized in both power generation and transport sectors. Apart from the electrical power sector, the transport sector is also one of the main contributors to GHG emissions. In this context, the automobile industry has emerged as an environmentally friendly solution, which presents Electric Vehicles (EVs) as an efficient and feasible alternative to mitigate the GHG footprint. The transition from fossil-fuel-based vehicles (FFVs) to EVs is, therefore, considered as a potential way to decarbonize the transport sector, where the socio-economic conditions may be improved to a significant extent. A major prerequisite under planning and implementation in Pakistan is forecasting of load growth of EVs in Pakistan. Therefore, this paper proposes a load growth model (load forecast), used to forecast the load growth expected for electric vehicles in Pakistan from 2021 to 2030. This paper discusses in detail the original and revised models. According to the revised model, total EV energy demand stood at 24.61 GWh in 2020 and increased up to 2862.54 GWh in 2030. Manufacturing facilities use about 35% of the domestic energy in the United States every year. Implementing an effective energy management system (EnMS) is one of the most important approaches to improve energy efficiency. However, the implementation of EnMS is low for many countries (including the US) and even for energy-intensive sectors. The reasons for the low implementation rate of energy management systems had been investigated by multiple researchers, but very few studies have focused on the barriers and challenges of implementing ISO 50001-based energy management systems. To contribute to this understudied area, this paper discusses the implementation and outcomes of the first Better Plants 50001 Ready Virtual In-plant Training. This paper first provides an overview of 50001 Ready and the 50001 Ready Navigator Tool. Then, it provides details on this training event and its outcomes. Finally, it discusses findings from the responses to 40 live polling questions about the status of the 25 tasks of the 50001 Ready Navigator for participating companies, key components of the participating manufacturing companies' energy management systems, and challenges and barriers that these companies are facing. The findings suggest that although many companies understood the importance of an effective energy management system, about half of them do not understand the required resources for building energy management systems, and most of them have only just begun establishing these systems and need more assistance and resources in multiple areas. More specifically, more assistance is necessary for the following: (1) improving corporate management's understanding of the time and resources needed to build an EnMS as well as the benefits; (2) creating linear regression models for more accurate energy performance tracking; (3) understanding energy use, collecting and analyzing energy performance data; (4) optimizing equipment operational controls, and creating action plans. The energy use of residues from agriculture, forestry, and solid waste can foster the transition towards a more renewable energy supply. This paper analyzes the energy potential of the above-mentioned sources for energy applications in Kosovo. The analysis is based on statistical data from different studies and reports, analyzing and calculating them to determine the theoretical and energy biomass potential. Kosovo can increase its self-sufficiency by taking advantage of its rich but under-utilized potential of biomass energy sources. This is a novelty study in this area, considering Kosovo lignite-dominated heat energy and electricity consumption and the available special literature. According to our estimates, the theoretical potential is 6.13 million tons/year, while the biomass energy potential should be around 4.57 million tons/year, including approximately 74.6% of biomass, which can be used for energy needs (heating and electricity). Based on the data and calculations, the available and usable potential shows biomass as an energy source with high potential in Kosovo; its share is very low, but it is reasonable to grow for both environmental and economic reasons. The use of biomass can be a strategic way to realize a carbon-neutral energy plan, ensuring a fuel feedstock. Residual biomass arising from pruning is demonstrated to be an important energy resource in terms of quantity and quality. In the Salento peninsula, Apulia Region, in the south of Italy, a dramatic outbreak of Xylella fastidiosa has decimated olive trees since 2013, gaining a considerable amount of wood biomass. This paper, starting from the need to find a way to optimize the use of this available stock, reviews the main technologies on the utilization of olive wood for energy purposes. In particular, processes and products are here described, and an energy analysis compares lower heating value (LHV), higher heating value (HHV), mass yield, process operating conditions, and energy generated and spent by the process in order to find the most effective technology in order to optimize the energy use of olive biomass. The conclusions show the advantages and disadvantages of each technology. Pyrolysis performs well, showing the best results for both char HHV and syngas yield under different operating conditions. Gasification seems to be the most appropriate among conversion technologies to optimize olive tree pruning for energy purposes, as it can be used to produce both electrical and thermal energy. In terms of economic valorization, char is the most promising material representing a value-added product, the quality and versatility of which ranges from fuel to soil improvers and additives for the construction of supercapacitors. Conversely, its disadvantages are mainly represented by high ash content, which can slightly decrease the boiler efficiency. Finally, the amount of alkali metals can produce several problems, such as fouling, slagging, corrosion, etc., posing a challenge for combustion control and pollutant minimization.
