This book contains a selection of the best articles presented at the 4th International Conference GIRE3D - Participatory and Integrated Management of Water Resources in Arid Zones, November 23th-25th, Help at Laayoune - Morocco, co-organized by Moroccan Committee of the International Hydraulics Association (CM-AIH) and Hydraulic basin agency of Sakia El Hamra and Oued Eddahab (ABHSHOD). It discusses the role of computational and geospatial technologies for water resources sustainable management and is intended primarily for professional, researchers, teachers and postgraduate students in fields that can benefit from geoinformation—both within and outside the areas of geographic information science, modelling and optimization.

Making maps dates back at least four thousand years and it is widely recognised that many maps are of great historical value and present a skilled method of summarising the real world on a sheet of paper. Less well known is the judgement involved in the selection and simplification of features, the complex transformation of space and the exacting standards which are needed in cartography. This book is primarily a tribute to Professor F.J. Ormeling, former President and Secretary/Treasurer of the ICA and gives a wide ranging review of the current status of cartography, how this status was attained and the way in which the subject is expected to evolve over the next decade. It is composed of two main sections. In the first, the present state of cartography in different countries is examined. In the five years since the publication of the first edition of A Guide to Effective Map Design, cartography and software have become further intertwined. However, the initial motivation for publishing the first edition is still valid: many GISers enter the field without so much as one hour of design instruction in their formal education. Yet they
