- Author
-
Leslie S. Pratch and Leslie S. Pratch
- Subjects
- Executive ability, Leadership--Psychological aspects, Executives--Selection and appointment, Executives--Psychology, Personality assessment
- Abstract
Leslie S. Pratch is a practicing psychologist who focuses on assessing and coaching executives who occupy or are candidates for top positions in business organizations. In this book, she shares insights from more than twenty years of executive evaluations and offers an empirical method of identifying executives who will be effective within organizations—and to flag those who will ultimately fail—by evaluating hidden aspects of personality and character. Pratch compares candidates with impressive careers and tries to determine which are likely to act with consistently high integrity and exhibit sound, timely judgment when faced with unanticipated business problems. Central to effective leadership is a psychological quality called'active coping,'which Pratch defines and explores by referencing case studies, historical figures, and her own scholarly work. This book speaks not only to those in hiring positions and their advisors but also more widely to leaders and anyone who wishes to learn more about their own character and the abilities of those around them. Pratch offers knowledge, asks questions, and challenges common perceptions, providing a practical tool for those in business and for the general reader.

This Special Issue of Business Process Management Journal contains selected papers presented at the 7th Canadian Quality Congress that was held at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The theme of the congress was: Managing Change through Quality Leadership. This volume has eight papers on a variety of interesting topics. The authors, in their efforts to understand the important role of process management in TQM are telling us what is happening now and what must happen in the future on the global stage. Beside the papers presented here, I would like to say that there were many excellent presentations on quality and innovations in healthcare industries. But, unfortunately those authors decided not to write their stories at this time for this special issue.

This edited collection includes contributions by Mary Parker Follett, Henri Fayol, James D. Mooney and Henry S. Dennison, and L. J. Henderson, T. N. Whitehead and Elton Mayo. The paper by Henderson, Whitehead and Mayo discusses the findings of the Hawthorne experiments. Whilst admiring the pioneering work of Taylor, these authors criticize scientific management on the grounds that it does not study the facts of human organization. The Hawthorne experiments revealed the importance of spontaneous social organization of the work group into a micro-social system.

16. Entrepreneurial Theorizing : An Approach to Research
- Author

- Subjects
- Entrepreneurship, New business enterprises, Management
- Abstract
This open access book investigates an entrepreneurial approach to building new theories. It provides a rich understanding of how specific tools facilitate aspects of the theorizing process and offers a clearer big picture of the process of building important new entrepreneurship theories. The authors show that anthropomorphizing has been a critically important tool for developing influential entrepreneurship theories. They reveal how scholars build on their rich and highly accessible understanding of humans (i.e., the self and others) to make guesses and sense of entrepreneurial anomalies, articulate theoretical mechanisms to build more robust entrepreneurship theories, and create plausible stories that facilitate sensegiving. Further, they offer a frameworkthat guides entrepreneurship scholars in finding a balance to maximize their contributions and guides reviewers and editors in managing the revise-and-resubmit process to advance the entrepreneurship field. Finally, they present lean scholarship as an approach to developing a portfolio of high-quality, high-impact papers. Lean scholarship starts with an entrepreneurial mindset and involves creating a minimum viable paper, exploring its validity, adding a plausible paper to one's portfolio, and managing the portfolio by periodically deciding whether to persevere, pivot, or terminate each paper. This seminal work will appeal to entrepreneurship researchers, both those new to the field as well as seasoned veterans, who want to learn more about the tools that can be used to generate new knowledge about new ventures and other entrepreneurship topics.

- Abstract
This book presents a systematic literature review of 156 published papers on business model innovation (BMI). The aim is to identify and integrate the different theoretical perspectives, analytical levels, and empirical contexts in order to deepen understanding of this complex phenomenon. The authors conduct an inductive thematic analysis based on an informal ontological classification that identifies 56 key themes. Within each theme, discussion focuses on thematic patterns, potential inconsistencies and debates, and future directions and opportunities for research. The book makes a number of significant contributions to the field. First, it offers a deeper understanding of the evolution of research on BMI through an ontological map that identifies the key thematic areas in the literature. Second, a multilevel model is developed that clarifies the concept of BMI by identifying its drivers, contingencies, and outcomes. Third, the authors identify clear and specificdirections for further research and offer suggestions on research design, creating an informative road map for the future. The book will be of value both to scholars and researchers and to practitioners.

- Abstract
In April 2018 more than 150 researchers from 16 different countries convened at MIT for the second SCALE Latin American Conference on Supply Chain Management and Logistics (SCM&L). This edited book presents 18 papers on SCML in Latin America which emerged from this conference. As a region with more than 640 million people, and an economy that grows faster than those of developed regions, Latin America is the subject of large infrastructure projects and heightened interest from multinational companies. With contributors spanning eleven different countries, and comprising MIT faculty and researchers, and academics from prestigious Latin American institutions, this collection covers a variety of relevant topics in SCM&L for the region, and also addresses its lack of cases and applied examples. With cases from Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, and Paraguay, this book breaks fresh ground by looking at risk analysis, and small firms supply chain management. Making a solid contribution to the regional needs for SCM&L literature for education, research, and practice, this book is relevant to researchers and professionals living and operating in the region, as well as in developing economies beyond.

- Abstract
Cyber risk has emerged as a key threat to financial stability, following recent attacks on financial institutions. This paper presents a novel documentation of cyber risk around the world for financial institutions by analyzing the different types of cyber incidents (data breaches, fraud and business disruption) and identifying patterns using a variety of datasets. The other novel contribution that is outlined is a quantitative framework to assess cyber risk for the financial sector. The framework draws on a standard VaR type framework used to assess various types of stability risk and can be easily applied at the individual country level. The framework is applied in this paper to the available cross-country data and yields illustrative aggregated losses for the financial sector in the sample across a variety of scenarios ranging from 10 to 30 percent of net income.

- Abstract
Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 4.9, Kenyatta University, course: Business Management, language: English, abstract: In the ever-evolving landscape of business, organizations constantly find themselves at the crossroads of change. Whether driven by external market forces or internal transformations, change is an inevitable companion on the corporate journey. The ability to navigate change effectively often defines the success and longevity of a company. In this change analysis paper, we delve into the intriguing narratives of two renowned publicly traded companies and explore how they have handled significant changes in their organizations. Change is not a monolithic concept; rather, it takes on different shapes and forms, each with its unique set of challenges and opportunities. To comprehend these dynamic processes, we employ the concept of'Images of Change.'Each image represents a distinct perspective on change management, ranging from the assertive'director'to the empathetic'nurturer.'By analyzing these images, we gain a deeper understanding of how these organizations responded to pivotal moments of transformation and adapted to the ever-changing corporate landscape. In the spotlight are two corporate giants, Apple Inc. and General Electric. Apple, a global icon renowned for its innovative prowess, faced a momentous leadership transition from the visionary Steve Jobs to the pragmatic Tim Cook. On the other hand, General Electric, a conglomerate with a storied history, undertook a series of strategic shifts, divestitures, and restructurings to remain relevant in an evolving industrial landscape. This paper embarks on a journey to dissect the change images embodied by these companies and their application within their unique contexts. It explores the pressures that necessitated these changes, the distinctions between their change approaches, and the unintended consequences that emerged along the way. Through this comparative analysis, we aim to glean valuable insights into the art of change management, demonstrating that the path to change is as diverse as the organizations that traverse it.

- Abstract
This paper describes issues in Korea's corporate sector, the need for restructuring, and the authorities'initiatives and challenges. It then identifies lessons from other countries'experience and conducts an econometric analysis based on cross-country aggregate data, compared with previous studies which mostly use firm-level data. This analysis finds that restructuring episodes, while sometimes challenging in the short term, have typically been associated with more rapid economic growth afterward. Corporate restructuring could have a negative effect on the labor and the financial markets in the short term, but is associated with positive growth through increased investment and capital productivity in the medium term, outpacing the negative effects.

- Abstract
Tax provisions favoring corporate debt over equity finance (“debt bias”) are widely recognized as a risk to financial stability. This paper explores whether and how thin-capitalization rules, which restrict interest deductibility beyond a certain amount, affect corporate debt ratios and mitigate financial stability risk. We find that rules targeted at related party borrowing (the majority of today's rules) have no significant impact on debt bias—which relates to third-party borrowing. Also, these rules have no effect on broader indicators of firm financial distress. Rules applying to all debt, in contrast, turn out to be effective: the presence of such a rule reduces the debt-asset ratio in an average company by 5 percentage points; and they reduce the probability for a firm to be in financial distress by 5 percent. Debt ratios are found to be more responsive to thin capitalization rules in industries characterized by a high share of tangible assets.

- Abstract
Base-of-the-pyramid (BoP) research talks about market based solutions for the development of marginalized sections of informal market economies. However, absence of sound theoretical foundations is obstructing development of the discourse. Relatively mature, (sustainable) supply chain management ((S)SCM) literature has many analogous concepts to the BoP research. The integration of the two research streams can not only provide BoP with the much needed theoretical infrastructure, but can also open new research frontiers for the (S)SCM research. The extent dissertation is an effort to integrate the BoP and (S)SCM research. The results of the systematic literature review highlight the theoretical commonalities among the two research streams and led to development of certain frameworks based upon the results of contingency analysis. The empirical part of the dissertation tries to explore the (S)SCM practices significantly affecting the purchasing performance of indigenous BoP firms in a B2B context. Argumentation of the resource dependency theory is employed to get deeper insights into the empirical results of the study.

- Abstract
This paper studies corporate performance in the aftermath of the global crisis by examining 6,581 manufacturing firms in 48 developed and developing countries in 2010, identifying factors of resilience as well as vulnerability. Based on a cross-sectional analysis, the results show that pre-crisis leverage and short-term debt have had negative effects on the speed of the recovery, while asset tangibility has had positive effects. The negative effect of leverage is non-linear, being particularly strong in firms with high pre-crisis leverage. Furthermore, the effects are different for advanced and emerging market economies. The paper also shows that the macroeconomic framework critically matters for firm growth. In particular, in countries that have allowed the exchange rate to depreciate, firms have had a faster recovery in sectors highly dependent on trade.

- Abstract
Master's Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Frankfurt (Main), language: English, abstract: This paper is about archetypes of a Digital Leader and takes a closer look at the development of a competency requirements profile based on a qualitative literature analysis. This thesis aims to develop a valid model of different archetypes of the DL and to provide those various archetypes with individual competencies. The archetypes match the respective challenges for corporations in their digitalization and transformation process. In order to develop such archetypes and the associated competency requirements, the following research questions will be answered throughout the thesis to define the boundaries of the case. 1. How can various leadership approaches as well as existing archetype and competency approaches be combined to create a new competency requirement profile of a Digital Leader? 2. What different archetypes of a Digital Leader emerge in terms of their competencies in the course of the Digitalization and Digital Transformation? In an environment characterized by transformation, in which long-term planning and reliable predictions are becoming increasingly impossible, competent leaders are becoming indispensable and even vital for organizations. Organizations must identify leaders who possess a comprehensive set of competencies for the emerging requirements. To address this issue, the outline of the thesis is as follows: section 2 introduces a comprehensive overview of the related literature and the definitional boundaries as well as existing approaches are provided. In section 3 the utilized research methodology is covered. This is followed, in section 4, by the presentation of the elaborated model and the results from the interviews will be connected to the research questions. In section 5, the work and the model are discussed and assessed in terms of potential limitations. Finally, a conclusion and outlook for further research requirements regarding the topic is provided in section 6.

- Abstract
The discussion around whether entrepreneurship can be taught is becoming obsolete as the number of entrepreneurship courses, specializations and degrees is rising at an unprecedented rate all over the world and the demand for entrepreneurial education teachers or instructors is constantly growing. The global community of entrepreneurial education proponents is enthusiastic about the possibility of spreading the idea of entrepreneurship, as it is believed to benefit societies and economies in addition to influencing human development on an individual level. The fervour is nurtured by public policies and the development of an enterprising culture in the public discourse. In this discourse, entrepreneurship is treated as a panacea for numerous social and economic problems. This book is a solid reference point for all who are interested in conducting research on entrepreneurial education or engaged in teaching entrepreneurship. It is a compendium of knowledge about entrepreneurial education as a research field, seen from the perspective of the last four decades, its complete contemporary history. - Abstract
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1.0, Würzburg-Schweinfurt University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: This paper is about the implementation of lean management in German SMEs. Globalization and modern technologies have notably affected the contemporary business environment. Especially, they have increased the market competition, encouraging the new entrants as well as interrupted the supply chain leading to an unstable economic state. SMEs are always at high risk of disappearing from the market in such an unstable economy. Therefore, the SMEs have to rethink to make themselves capable of facing the challenges of volatility that globalization and emerging technology have brought in the market environment. The businesses in the current competitive market have no chance to keep long lead time anymore because they cannot address the frequently fluctuating customer demand. The companies producing low-quality products with limited product diversity are also not able to survive in the current globalized market. Implementation of a new production method in SMEs has been essential. It uses the strong capability and the core competencies of the managers or owners in order to cope with the globalized market environment. Executing lean management makes use of manager's leading skills, entrepreneurship, technicality and innovativeness that enables a firm to eliminate all kinds of waste and produce high-quality goods, in a short time with low cost. It has been essential for SMEs to be existing in the current business environment.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2.1 (A), University of West Scotland (Business School), course: Doctorate of Business Administration, language: English, abstract: There is no doubt of leaders'existence and profound contribution in developing human civilization. History is littered with stories of many great leaders. Some are recognized for their dexterity in the battlefields, some perhaps for their business acumen or for inspiration for their employees. Whatever the reasons for fame, humans have recognized that the capability of an individual to make others take action and achieve goals makes them stand out in society. However, the question still remains - what is it that makes them different? Hence the purpose of this theoretical paper is to provide a review of the definition of leadership and of the three main theories of leadership, namely Trait, Behaviour, and Contingency Theory. The author then chooses a particular focus on Contingency Theory, which is analysed further.

- Abstract
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, Maastricht University, language: English, abstract: How does the use of heuristics by entrepreneurs in their long-term strategic decision-making influence firm performance? This research proposal suggests a positive relationship between the use of heuristics in decision-making and entrepreneurial firm performance. Consequently, the findings of this study could have important implications for the academic area concerned with heuristics. These findings could also provide meaningful implications for the success and sustainability of entrepreneurial firms that are currently facing substantial challenges. Moreover, this study provides valuable information for entrepreneurial and strategic decision-making, and, given the economic importance of entrepreneurial activity, strongly benefits society as a whole. To answer the research question at hand, this paper is structured as follows. Firstly, the literature review will incorporate existing research on strategic decision-making, heuristics, and the research gap, after which the proposed hypothesis will be derived. Secondly, the methodology and research design will be outlined. This section is followed by a description of how to execute the data analysis of the research model. Afterwards, this paper outlines potential findings and contributions in terms of theoretical and practical implications. Moreover, possible limitations will be examined, and an outlook for future research will be provided. Lastly, a brief conclusion will be given.

- Abstract
Patient self-reported data has become increasingly important in today's clinical trials. Trials in some disease indications rely upon patient recorded diary data as the primary endpoint to demonstrate drug efficacy - including, for example, indications such as insomnia, migraine and pain. In addition, improvements in quality of life measured using patient questionnaires can now be included as claims on drug labelling. Traditionally these data have been collected using paper questionnaires and diaries issued to subjects. Regulators and the industry have become increasingly aware of the limitations of recording patient reported outcomes data on paper including data quality and integrity issues. As a result there is a growing interest in collection of patient reported outcomes data using electronic means (ePRO). Solutions include handheld PDAs, Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems, and other site-based hardware such as touchscreen PCs. Recently, there has been much open debate with the regulators around the use of ePRO in clinical drug submissions. US and European agencies have approved new drugs that have included ePRO data in the submission dossier, but there are many questions around the adoption of the technology that concern the community. These include: ¢ How should instruments developed on paper be adapted for electronic use, and what degree of validation should be done between paper and electronic forms? ¢ How can researchers ensure they are complying with regulatory requirements including the PRO guidance published by FDA in 2009 when using ePRO solutions? ¢ Can fewer patients be exposed in a clinical trial as a result of improved data quality obtained using electronic diaries? ¢ What type of solution should be used for certain patient populations and protocols, and how can ePRO solutions be designed optimally to increase patient acceptability and compliance? Bill Byrom and Brian Tiplady's ePro addresses all these issues, reviews the new FDA guidance, and provides a very contemporary view on this important subject.

- Abstract
This book discusses the subject of pathways to a sustainable economy through science and technology innovations which are regarded as the important components of the ‘4th Industrial Revolution'. The volume has been developed from Bangladesh's ‘Vision 2041'agenda which includes development actions needed to catch up with more developed nations. Most importantly, the goals of the ‘Vision 2041'have been taken from the dreams of the architect of independent Bangladesh, Bangabandhu (Friends of Bengal) Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. His dream was to make Bangladesh the Switzerland of Asia. The Father of Bangladesh Nation was killed by assassins'bullets along with his most of the family members in August 1975. After his death, the nation moved backwards while recovering from nine months of liberation post war in 1971.Between 1975 and 1990 Bangladesh was ruled by military and quasi military governments. Bangladesh established a true democratic regime in 1996 withSheikh Mujib's daughter, Sheikh Hasina, who formed the government after 21 years with a mandate to realise the dreams of her father. Sheikh Hasina, had her own 20 year vision for Bangladesh, called, ‘Vision 2021', with plans to make the nation poverty free by 2021. After a pause between 2001 and 2008, Sheikh Hasina returned to power in 2009. Under her consecutive three terms she brought Bangladesh back on track and Bangladesh is one of the nations which reduced poverty half under MDGs by 2015. During her third consecutive term Sheikh Hasina, is on the way to transforming Bangladesh into a ‘middle income'nation by 2021. This volume aims to identify and mitigate the challenges of ‘4th Industrial Revolution'investigating the areas of science and technology innovations for Bangladesh and for other parts of the world keeping in mind establishing a sustainable economy under UN agendas to 2030 (SDGs). The primary audience for this book are UN development agencies, academic institutions, government policymakers and business leaders of the more developed and developing nations alike.

- Abstract
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Review of Business Studies, grade: 1.0, University of Frankfurt (Main), language: English, abstract: This work will analyze the reality of social entrepreneurship in Sub-Saharan Africa, through qualitative interviews in the field. By talking to social entrepreneurs of different countries and sectors in the region, it will possible to give a holistic understanding of what social enterprises need, in order to succeed. Social enterprises still face different internal and external challenges that need to be overcome: From equal access to talent, finance and social networks. To existing policies, which currently are not creating enough favorable incentives to support social enterprises. And an overall stigma and mindset around Sub-Saharan Africa, dominated by stereotypes of poverty, instability and risk. Based on this multidimensional understanding of the obstacles, which hinder social entrepreneurial success in the region, this paper will elaborate concrete recommendations: both in terms of internal and external factors, such as policy and mindset transformation. Social entrepreneurship and its difficulties and success factors in Sub-Saharan Africa are still under-researched. This field especially lacks empirical studies. Literature offers theoretical knowledge about the phenomenon of social entrepreneurship in general and a holistic insight about specific business conditions in Sub-Saharan Africa. A desk review of existing literature in this area will form the theoretical-contextual foundation for the qualitative field-research of this paper. The analysis of the qualitative data will be carried out within four different categories in order to allow a comprehensive understanding of social entrepreneurial success factors: Human capital, financial capital, social capital and business environment. Within the discussion, based on the qualitative results, this paper will be able to formulate recommendations as to how social entrepreneurial success factors could be achieved and leveraged. The results of which will be summarized within the conclusion and form the foundation for answering the core research question of this work: which factors help social enterprises to scale successfully and foster sustainable development? An outlook of possible future research topics will conclude this paper.

- Abstract
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2.0, University of Tubingen (Department of International Business), language: English, abstract: This paper's purpose is to give an overview of how distance in management research is measured and to overview the strong critique the corresponding measures have to face. The paper's investigation brought several findings: firstly that frameworks in which distance constructs develop are too wide in their definition and that these frameworks are insufficiently connected to each other what impedes the improvement of the strong criticised but in management research essential constructs. Secondly the paper illustrates the widespread disagreement among researchers and literature. The paper gives suggestions how distance measures could be improved and contributes to a more'outside of the box thinking'by considering the whole distance construct. Furthermore it helps to build unbiased opinions of the thematic by not taking a side or giving suggestions whether on construct is superior towards another. Due to rising internationalization of businesses and the circumstance of having business partners, suppliers and clients placed all around the world, companies are fronting challenges like diversities in lifestyles, languages, cultural values and norms, consumer preferences and buying power. So it is not surprising that these differences or distances became an increasingly important topic in international management research. Distance aspects are important for companies in evaluating and improving their international strategies in nearly every field of business, especially when it comes to expansions in foreign investments through direct investments, international transactions and joint ventures. In purpose to be able to identify the extent of difference between countries, that Hymer called'liability of foreignness', management scholars evolved a broad range of quantitative and qualitative distance measures based on different assumptions and methods. But although the concepts play an important role in international management research and although they are widely used in international business practice to support or to improve companies'decision-making process, they face strong criticism and contradiction.

- Abstract
Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 67, University College London (School of Public Policy), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this research focuses on one of the latest and most significant development of Justice, Freedom and Security policies of the EU: the creation of FRONTEX, the Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union, established in 2004 and operational since 2005. In particular, this paper will utilise a principal-agent perspective in an attempt to explain why Frontex has been established, what roles the various institutions played in the process of, and the context behind, its creation. The paper argues that Member States established an agency borne out of the need to enhance the Area of Justice, Freedom and Security in the context of the Schengen agreements. Consequently, the paper highlights the deficiencies of the structure, especially regarding its independence from its principals, and its current funding regulation limits, that result in a wide range of tasks and a high dependence from the resources of Member States. However, even if primarily only used in the context of counter-illegal immigration operations, the paper highlights how the agency has been growing steadily in power and resources, and represents a first fundamental step towards an effective communitarisation of border management that could lead, in the long term, to the establishment of a European Border Police.

- Abstract
Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: B, Henley Business School University of Reading (Department of Real Estate & Planning), course: Independent Study, language: English, abstract: Purpose – To explore current practice and integrate proposed concepts from academic literature into a more comprehensive conceptual framework for workplace solution planning that is applicable to professional services firms. The paper aims for facilitating holistic considerations of strategic opportunities and, therefore, may enhance approaches in the early stages of workplace transformation projects. It also presents a critical reflection of the contemporary cost reduction paradigm. Design/methodology/approach – Review of literature from a wide range of academic disciplines and practitioners. Findings – In the realm of contemporary workplace solutions there is little evidence to be found of an evolution of CREM towards a truly strategic discipline but it still appears to be focused on operational metrics in the aftermath of the greatest recession after World War II. Originality/value – This paper integrates findings and theories from different disciplines in order to create a contextual understanding about the nature of knowledge work and the requirements for productivity-focussed workplace solutions in multinational professional services firms.

- Abstract
This paper presents the results of the second round of the Revenue Administration Fiscal Information Tool (RA-FIT) country survey in an aggregated manner for all respondents and by income group. Notwithstanding regional biases and some data quality issues with the sample, broad insights and trends are discernible from the data, and the results form part of an evolving series that will continue to develop and grow with the International Survey On Revenue Administration (ISORA), the successor survey to RA-FIT conducted by the IMF in collaboration with the Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations (CIAT), the Intra-European Organisation of Tax Administration (IOTA), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This paper expands on a previous one, which covered the first round of RA-FIT (Lemgruber and others 2015),1 and aims to allow countries to access information about key measures in revenue administration. Unlike the first paper, this one does not cover issues specific to customs administration but focuses rather on tax administration data.

- Abstract
This book includes many cases that provide new perspectives in developing agent-based modeling and simulation. The real problems are complex, and sophisticated methodology is needed to handle them. Agent-based modeling and simulation is one methodology that provides a bottom-up experimental approach applicable to social sciences such as economics, management, sociology, and politics as well as some engineering fields dealing with social activities. However, to improve the applicability of agent-based modeling and simulation methods, a new perspective is needed. In this book, that new perspective is developed and utilized to deal with many cases of real-world problems such as the supply chain, land use and land cover, transportation, health, services, economics, and social problems. The cases are selected from papers presented at the Ninth International Workshop on Agent-Based Approaches in Economic and Social Complex Systems held in Bali, Indonesia, in 2015. At the workshop, 29 reviewed full papers were presented, and of those, 16 were selected to be included in this volume.

- Abstract
This is an open access book.Management science and engineering is a systematic discipline that combines modern information technology and digital technology, and then uses some related discipline methods, such as systems science, mathematical science, economics and behavioral science, and engineering methods. After analyzing and researching some problems arising from social economy, engineering, education, finance, etc., and making corresponding countermeasures. The main purpose is to achieve control and planning, decision-making and adjustment in social, economic, education, engineering and other aspects, and then make improvements, and finally organize and coordinate. The relevant departments can be combined to achieve system management, so that the allocation of resources and the Management can be rationally optimized, so that individual functions can play the greatest role, minimize resource consumption, and maximize the optimal allocation of resources. This is also the ultimate research purpose.Liangliang Wang said:'Management is the productive force, which promotes the development of the country, society and enterprise. The relationship between management practice and management science is the relationship between theory and practice. The research on management science helps to improve the level of management, and then promote the development of the country, society and enterprises. On the other hand, management practice changes with the continuous progress of the times. It is necessary to study the current situation and trend of management science in the new era, which will help to clarify the future development direction of the discipline and discover the deficiencies in management scientific research and grasp it. The focus of management science research, thereby promoting research in management science.'Therefore, it is necessary to create a space for management science practitioners, engineering practitioners, researchers and related enthusiasts to gather and discuss this current issue. The 2nd International Conference on Management Science and Software Engineering (ICMSSE 2022) aims to accommodate this need, as well as to:1. provide a platform for experts and scholars, engineers and technicians in the field of management and software engineering to share scientific research achievements and cutting-edge technologies2. understand academic development trends, broaden research ideas, strengthen academic research and discussion, and promote the industrialization cooperation of academic achievements3. - Abstract
How can management research promote a more applicable and a more transparent knowledge for the benefit of individuals and organizations? Looming large over this question is the challenge of repurposing management research for improving public good. Co-edited by R. H. Tiell and S. C. Malka, the title of the book says it all - Amplifying management research for the common good: Lessons for curious individuals and organizations - Insights from practitioners in the field. In this book, we sought to bridge the chasm that separates the non-academic audience from the typically less-accessible scientific journals. We attempted to make empirical evidence more inclusive, impactful and public good relevant for the non-academic stakeholders that live and work in the broader community. For that purpose, we made available to the reader and to our chapter contributors a collection of published papers, some authored by the editors of this book, and others co-authored with other researchers. The papers cover a diverse set of business topics all of which we believe hold much relevance for management today. Providing the reader with their insights on subject matter along with lessons and practical recommendations, we sought experts in the field that can build on empirical research in various areas of management and then synthesize and broaden it through their expertise and work experience. As a trigger, we aligned each contributor with one or two empirical papers based on their background, interests, and professional experience. Using the assigned papers as a springboard, we asked each author to identify emerging themes around which they can build their chapter. We wanted them to think of the book audience: non-academicians comprised of interested and curious individuals, managers, and their organizations. And, we wanted our authors to elaborate on practical lessons, suggestions, and recommendations that can make a difference in the lives of the book audience. Our effort resulted in a collection of chapters covering a wide range of topics from supply chain challenges in Central America, to life changing long-term effects of the pandemic, from delivery of services for mental health and suicide, to logistics capabilities pre-post Ivan in the Cayman Islands, from the new workplace, to labor market shortages, and from new workforce service pathways, and the optimization of talent, to the impact of recent recessions on the youth and the unemployed, and the assessment of C-suit level leaders. We would like to believe that the breadth of the topics covered and the amount of information being disseminated through the book chapters are meaningful, practical, and relevant to a wide audience of curious readers. ENDORSEMENTS'I highly recommend “Amplifying Management Research for the Common Good” to anyone interested in shaping the workplace of the future. Written by a team of experts, this book provides a compelling argument for why free and open access to research is essential for improving workforce outcomes. The authors explore how the current paywall system limits the dissemination of critical research findings and prevents practitioners and policymakers from accessing the latest insights and innovations. As we exit a global pandemic and enter a re-shaping of the world of work the nation's talent development ecosystem must innovate and scale to the need. By advocating for open access to research, the authors advance the forming of a more effective and equitable workforce development system. This book is a must-read for anyone looking to contribute to that cause.'— Rick Maher, Adaptive Human Capital'Someone once observed that a crisis is a horrible thing to waste. The essence of this advice is that a crisis will always have the potential for the wise and curious to draw lessons and extract prescriptions. Tiell and Malka have produced a book reflecting not only their curiosity and wisdom, but also their desire to help all who follow their pre

- Abstract
This volume collects the best papers presented at the 2019 Conference SIEV (Italian Society of Appraisal and Valuation) on the Science of Evaluation foundations, actuality, and prospects. The book consists of twenty-six papers and is organized into four parts: the first one collects reflections on the nature of the value judgement, on the truth of the evaluative statement, and on the authenticity its contents, the values; the next three present operational experiences in the three fields of natural, urban and cultural heritage where the knowledge of the value of the human space, supports decisions and policies, highlighting feature concerning: value and valuations in the dialectic between earth and the city; the value bearers between heuristic and normatively; the role of valuation for the complementarity of rules and creativity. The book is being published in the midst of the new radical transformations of the equilibrium between social system and environment generated by the serious and unexpected crises of the third decade of this century. Reflections on the reality that fills evaluative statement with truth – the reality of values – is more topical than ever in a historic phase in which the role of democracies and the destiny of civil coexistence is called into question, claiming the order of unamendable values like truth, justice and beauty. The book brings together experiences that focus on the “intentional evaluative consciousness” as a condition for the responsibility of the subject - individual and collective - concerning the saliences and urgencies most significantly contributing to the formation of orderly communities.
