Rocket kerosene plays an important role in the regenerative cooling process of rocket thrust chambers. Its thermal conductivity determines the cooling efficiency and the tendency to coke in rocket kerosene engines. In this paper, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were introduced into rocket kerosene to improve its thermal conductivity. Molecular dynamics simulation was used to investigate the thermal conductivity of the composite system and its underlying thermal conductivity mechanism. Firstly, by studying the effect of the mass fraction of GNPs, it was found that, when the graphene mass fraction increases from 1.14% to 6.49%, the thermal conductivity of the composite system increases from 4.26% to 17.83%, which can be explained by the percolation theory. Secondly, the influence of the size of GNPs on the thermal conductivity of the composite system was studied. Basically, the thermal conductivity was found to increase by increasing the aspect ratio of GNPs, indicating that GNPs with a higher aspect ratio are more conducive to improving the thermal conductivity of rocket kerosene. By carefully analyzing the effect of the size of GNPs on thermal conductivity, it was concluded that the thermal conduction enhancement by adding GNPs is determined by the combined effect of the percolation theory and the Brownian motion. The results of the temperature effect study showed that the ratio of thermal conductivity to rocket kerosene increased from 1.16 to 1.26 and from 1.07 to 1.11 for the composite systems, with graphene sizes of 41.18 Å × 64.00 Å and 24.14 Å × 17.22 Å in the temperature range of 293 K to 343 K, respectively. It is further proved that the Brownian motion of GNPs has a non-negligible effect on the thermal conductivity of the composite system. This work provides microscopic insights into the thermal conduction mechanism of GNPs in nanofluids and will offer practical guidance for improving the thermal conductivity of rocket kerosene. Nowadays, many types of materials are elaborated for microwave absorption applications. Carbon-based nanoparticles belong to these types of materials. Among these, graphene presents some distinctive features for electromagnetic radiation absorption and thus microwave isolation applications. In this paper, the dielectric characteristics and microwave absorption properties of epoxy resin loaded with graphene particles are presented from 2 GHz to 18 GHz. The influence of various parameters such as particle size (3 µm, 6-8 µm, and 15 µm) and weight ratio (from 5% to 25%) are presented, studied, and discussed. The sample loaded with the smallest graphene size (3 µm) and the highest weight ratio (25%) exhibits high loss tangent (tanδ = 0.36) and a middle dielectric constant ε' = 12-14 in the 8-10 GHz frequency range. As expected, this sample also provides the highest absorption level: from 5 dB/cm at 4 GHz to 16 dB/cm at 18 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A set of platinum (Pt) and earth-abundant transition metals (M = Ni, Fe, Cu) on graphene nanoplatelets (sqPtM/GNPs) was synthesised via sequential deposition to establish parallels between the synthesis method and the materials' electrochemical properties. sqPtM/GNPs were assessed as bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution (OER) and reduction (ORR) reactions for application in unitised regenerative fuel cells and metal-air batteries. sqPtFe/GNPs showed the highest catalytic performance with a low potential difference of ORR half-wave potential and overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 during OER, a crucial parameter for bifunctional electrocatalysts benchmarking. A novel two-stage synthesis strategy led to higher electrocatalytic performance by facilitating the reactants' access to the active sites and reducing the charge-transfer resistance. Carbon is one of the most abundant elements on Earth. In addition to the well-known crystallographic modifications such as graphite and diamond, other allotropic carbon modifications such as graphene-based nanomaterials and carbon nanotubes have recently come to the fore. These carbon nanomaterials can be designed to help deliver or target drugs more efficiently and to innovate therapeutic approaches, especially for cancer treatment, but also for the development of new diagnostic agents for malignancies and are expected to help combine molecular imaging for diagnosis with therapies. Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were prepared using the electrolytic exfoliation method on graphite foil in an ammonium sulfate solution. A series of experiments were conducted in order to optimize the production of the flakes by varying the pH of the solution, applied voltage and current, duration of electrolysis, temperature in the electrolytic system, and type and duration of the ultrasound interaction. This paper investigates the utilization of commercial masterbatches of graphene nanoplatelets to improve the properties of neat polymer and wood fiber composites manufactured by conventional processing methods. The effect of aspect ratio of the graphene platelets (represented by the different number of layers in the nanoplatelet) on the properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is discussed. The composites were characterized for their mechanical properties (tensile, flexural, impact) and physical characteristics (morphology, crystallization, and thermal stability). The effect of the addition of nanoplatelets on the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of the reinforced polymer with different contents of reinforcement was also investigated. In general, the mechanical performance of the polymer was enhanced at the presence of either of the reinforcements (graphene or wood fiber). The improvement in mechanical properties of the nanocomposite was notable considering that no compatibilizer was used in the manufacturing. The use of a masterbatch can promote utilization of nano-modified polymer composites on an industrial scale without modification of the currently employed processing methods and facilities. As promising next-generation conducting materials, Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs) have been widely used to enhance the mechanical and pressure-sensitive properties of cement-based materials. However, this beneficial effect highly depended on its dispersion. In this study, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) surfactant, high-speed shear, and ultrasonication were used to disperse GNPs. To fully exert the mechanical and pressure-sensitive properties and enhance the dispersion effect of GNPs in cement-based materials, the dispersing method parameters, including PVP concentration, ultrasonication time, shear time, and rate, were optimized. The dispersion degree of GNPs was evaluated by absorbance. The results show that the optimal dispersion parameters were 10 mg/mL of PVP concentration, 15 min of ultrasonication time, 15 min of shear time, and 8000 revolutions per minute (rpm) of shear rate. In addition, the effect of GNPs dosage (0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 wt%) on the setting time, flowability, and mechanical and pressure-sensitive properties of cement mortar were examined. Fe3O4 nanoparticles with average sizes of 3–8 nm were in-situ grown and self-assembled as homogeneous clusters on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) via coprecipitation with some additives, where RGO sheets were expanded from restacking and an increased surface area was obtained. The crystallization, purity and growth evolution of as-prepared Fe3O4/RGO nanocomposites were examined and discussed. Supercapacitor performance was investigated in a series of electrochemical tests and compared with pure Fe3O4. In 1 M KOH electrolyte, a high specific capacitance of 317.4 F g−1 at current density of 0.5 A g−1 was achieved, with the cycling stability remaining at 86.9% after 5500 cycles. The improved electrochemical properties of Fe3O4/RGO nanocomposites can be attributed to high electron transport, increased interfaces and positive synergistic effects between Fe3O4 and RGO. Graphene-based materials are widely studied to enable significant improvements in electroanalytical devices requiring new generations of robust, sensitive and low-cost electrodes. In this paper, we present a direct one-step route to synthetize a functional nitrogen-doped graphene film onto a Ni-covered silicon electrode substrate heated at high temperature, by pulsed laser deposition of carbon in the presence of a surrounding nitrogen atmosphere, with no post-deposition transfer of the film. With the ferrocene methanol system, the functionalized electrode exhibits excellent reversibility, close to the theoretical value of 59 mV, and very high sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide oxidation. Our electroanalytical results were correlated with the composition and nanoarchitecture of the N-doped graphene film containing 1.75 at % of nitrogen and identified as a few-layer defected and textured graphene film containing a balanced mixture of graphitic-N and pyrrolic-N chemical functions. The absence of nitrogen dopant in the graphene film considerably degraded some electroanalytical performances. Heat treatment extended beyond the high temperature graphene synthesis did not significantly improve any of the performances. The implementation of organic phase change materials (PCMs) in several applications such as heating and cooling or building comfort is an important target in thermal energy storage (TES). However, one of the major drawbacks of organic PCMs implementation is flammability. The addition of flame retardants to PCMs or shape-stabilized PCMs is one of the approaches to address this problem and improve their final deployment in the building material sector. In this study, the most common organic PCM, Paraffin RT-21, and fatty acids mixtures of capric acid (CA), myristic acid (MA), and palmitic acid (PA) in bulk, were tested to improve their fire reaction. Several flame retardants, such as ammonium phosphate, melamine phosphate, hydromagnesite, magnesium hydroxide, and aluminum hydroxide, were tested. The properties of the improved PCM with flame retardants were characterized by thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), the dripping test, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results for the dripping test show that fire retardancy was considerably enhanced by the addition of hydromagnesite (50 wt %) and magnesium hydroxide (50 wt %) in fatty acids mixtures. This will help the final implementation of these enhanced PCMs in building sector. The low thermal conductivity of fluids used in many industrial applications is one of the primary limitations in the development of more efficient heat transfer systems. A promising solution to this problem is the suspension of nanoparticles with high thermal conductivities in a base fluid. These suspensions, known as nanofluids, have great potential for enhancing heat transfer. The heat transfer enhancement of sulfonic acid-functionalized graphene nanoplatelet water-based nanofluids is addressed in this work. A new experimental setup was designed for this purpose. Convection coefficients, pressure drops, and thermophysical properties of various nanofluids at different concentrations were measured for several operational conditions and the results are compared with those of pure water. Enhancements in thermal conductivity and in convection heat transfer coefficient reach 12% (1 wt %) and 32% (0.5 wt %), respectively. New correlations capable of predicting the Nusselt number and the friction factor of this kind of nanofluid as a function of other dimensionless quantities are developed. In addition, thermal performance factors are obtained from the experimental convection coefficient and pressure drop data in order to assess the convenience of replacing the base fluid with designed nanofluids. In this work, in-plane and through-plane thermal diffusivities and conductivities of a freestanding sheet of graphene nanoplatelets are determined using photothermal beam deflection spectrometry. Two experimental methods were employed in order to observe the effect of load pressures on the thermal diffusivity and conductivity of the materials. The in-plane thermal diffusivity was determined by the use of a slope method supported by a new theoretical model, whereas the through-plane thermal diffusivity was determined by a frequency scan method in which the obtained data were processed with a specifically developed least-squares data processing algorithm. On the basis of the determined values, the in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivities and their dependences on the values of thermal diffusivity were found. The results show a significant difference in the character of thermal parameter dependence between the two methods. In the case of the in-plane configuration of the experimental setup, the thermal conductivity decreases with the increase in thermal diffusivity, whereas with the through-plane variant, the thermal conductivity increases with an increase in thermal diffusivity for the whole range of the loading pressure used. This behavior is due to the dependence of heat propagation on changes introduced in the graphene nano-platelets structure by compression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A successful bone-graft-controlled healing entails the development of novel products with tunable compositional and architectural features and mechanical performances and is, thereby, able to accommodate fast bone in-growth and remodeling. To this effect, graphene nanoplatelets and Luffa-fibers were chosen as mechanical reinforcement phase and sacrificial template, respectively, and incorporated into a hydroxyapatite and brushite matrix derived by marble conversion with the help of a reproducible technology. The bio-products, framed by a one-stage-addition polymer-free fabrication route, were thoroughly physico-chemically investigated (by XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, and nano-computed tomography analysis, as well as surface energy measurements and mechanical performance assessments) after sintering in air or nitrogen ambient. The experiments exposed that the coupling of a nitrogen ambient with the graphene admixing triggers, in both compact and porous samples, important structural (i.e., decomposition of β-Ca3(PO4)2 into α-Ca3(PO4)2 and α-Ca2P2O7) and morphological modifications. Certain restrictions and benefits were outlined with respect to the spatial porosity and global mechanical features of the derived bone scaffolds. Specifically, in nitrogen ambient, the graphene amount should be set to a maximum 0.25 wt.% in the case of compact products, while for the porous ones, significantly augmented compressive strengths were revealed at all graphene amounts. The sintering ambient or the graphene addition did not interfere with the Luffa ability to generate 3D-channels-arrays at high temperatures. It can be concluded that both Luffa and graphene agents act as adjuvants under nitrogen ambient, and that their incorporation-ratio can be modulated to favorably fit certain foreseeable biomedical applications. The effects of the wet milling rotating speed on the number of graphene layers and graphene quality, and the conversion efficiency of graphite exfoliate to graphene, were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that the number of few-layer graphene nanometer sheets (GNSs) (≤10 layers) gradually increases with the increase of rotational speed in the range of 160–240 rpm. The proportion of GNSs with 0–10 layers reaches more than 80% as the rotational speed is increased to 280 rpm. GNS defect types in the composite materials are marginal defects with minimal influence and almost no oxidation. In the range of 160–280 rpm, the intensity of graphite peak decreases and the conversion efficiency of graphene increases with the increase of rotational speed. The objective of this study is to investigate the tribological behavior of graphene nanoplatelets (xGnPs) as nano-solid lubricants, and to evaluate their applicability to the micro-drilling of multi-directional carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (MD-CFRP). To verify the tribological effect of nano-solid lubricants, three kinds of xGnPs (xGnP C-750, xGnP M-5, and xGnP H-5), multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and hBN are compared by the ball-on-plate test. Of these, three xGnPs are selected as nano-solid lubricants to investigate the micro-drilling performance of MD-CFRP using nano-solid dry lubrication, and the experimental results demonstrate that all xGnPs can enhance lubrication action in terms of surface quality (delamination, uncut fiber, and inner surface) and tool wear. In particular, larger graphene nanoplatelets (xGnP M-5 and xGnP H-5) are superior to the smaller one (xGnP C-750) by guaranteeing enhanced sliding action between the tool grain and the CFRP composite. Graphene-based nanostructures, used as potential reinforcement in ceramic composites, have a great tendency to agglomerate. This requires the use of homogenization techniques during the powder processing, posing the need to evaluate how these techniques affect the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the resulting composites. The influence of the processing route on the properties of 3YTZP (3 mol % yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystals) ceramic composites with 10 vol % cost-effective GNP (graphene nanoplatelets) has been addressed. Four different powder processing routines combining ultrasonic powder agitation (UA) and planetary ball milling (PBM) in wet and dry media have been used and all the composites were densified by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The mechanical properties at room temperature in the macroscale have been assessed by Vickers indentations, four-point bending tests and the impulse-echo technique, while instrumented indentation was used to measure the hardness and Young's modulus at the nanoscale. The application of dry-PBM enhances greatly the mechanical and electrical isotropy of the composites, slightly increases the hardness and lowers the elastic modulus, independently of the application of UA. The goal of this work was to study the effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) modified with ionic liquid (IL) on properties of styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) composites. GnPs were decorated with IL or were modified in bulk directly during rubber mix preparation. The ionic liquid used was 1-butyl-4-methylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate (BMPFB). The textural properties were studied to confirm surface modification of GnPs with BMPFB. In these investigations, the impact of the concentration of GnPs and the effect of the method of GnPs' modification with IL on elastomers properties are described. Some thermal measurements (e.g., differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry) were conducted to characterize the thermal stability or the vulcanization process of the investigated samples. Complementary experimental techniques were used to investigate the properties of the obtained elastomers, specifically tensile testing, and electrical and barrier property measurements. The deposition of IL on the GnPs' surface positively influenced the mechanical and barrier properties of elastomers. However, samples containing graphene nanoplatelets modified from solution were characterized by less electrical conductivity. The incorporation of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) within a polymer matrix can play an important role in the physical properties and the functionality of the composite material. Composites consisting of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and GnPs of different concentrations were developed by mixing GnPs with a molten form of the polymeric matrix. The effect of the GnPs content on the morphological, structural, and electrical properties of the composites were investigated. As shown, graphene presence and its concentration significantly modified the polymer matrix properties, a behavior that can be employed for tailoring its applicability in electrical applications. It was found that the increase of the graphene platelets concentration seems to promote the formation of graphene agglomerates, air gaps, and inhomogeneities, while higher dielectric constant/lower dielectric losses can be achieved. Ultrasound energy is a green and economically viable alternative to conventional techniques for surface modification of materials. The main benefits of this technique are the decrease of processing time and the amount of energy used. In this work, graphene nanoplatelets were treated with organic acids under ultrasonic radiation of 350 W at different times (30 and 60 min) aiming to modify their surface with functional acid groups and to improve the adsorption of uremic toxins. The modified graphene nanoplatelets were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The optimum time for modification with organic acids was 30 min. The modified nanoplatelets were tested as adsorbent material for uremic toxins using the equilibrium isotherms where the adsorption isotherm of urea was adjusted for the Langmuir model. Composite solder is a promising route to improve the properties and reliability of Sn-based lead-free solder. In this study, Cu-coated graphene nanosheets (Cu-GNSs) were synthesized using pyrolysis. Cu-GNSs reinforced Sn2.5Ag0.7Cu0.1RE composite lead-free solders were prepared via powder metallurgy. The size, distribution, and adsorption type of Cu nanoparticles on the GNSs were studied. The relation of the Cu-GNSs content and microstructure to the physical, wettability, and mechanical properties of composite solders was discussed. The results show that Cu nanoparticles (with a mean size of 13 nm) present uniform distribution and effective chemisorptions on the GNS. Microstructural evolution of composite solders is dependent on the addition of Cu-GNSs. With increasing Cu-GNSs addition, β-Sn grains become finer and the eutectic phase proportion becomes larger, while the morphology of the eutectic phase transforms from dispersion to network-type. The improvement of the tensile strength of the composite solder can be attributed to grain refinement and load transfer. While the existence of Cu-GNSs can effectively improve the wettability and slightly change the melting point, it can also lead to the decline of elongation and electrical conductivity of the composite solder. Graphene is an attractive component for high-performance stimuli-responsive or 'smart' materials, shape memory materials, photomechanical actuators, piezoelectric materials and flexible strain sensors. Nanocomposite fibres were produced by electrospinning high molecular weight Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP-1300 kDa) in the presence of noncovalently functionalised graphene obtained through tip sonication of graphite alcoholic suspensions in the presence of PVP (10 kDa). Bending instability of electrospun jet appears to progressively increase at low graphene concentrations with the result of greater fibre stretching that leads to lower fibre diameter and possibly conformational changes of PVP. Further increase of graphene content seams having the opposite effect leading to greater fibre diameter and Raman spectra similar to the pure PVP electrospun mats. All this has been interpreted on the basis of currently accepted model for bending instability of electrospun jets. The graphene addition does not lower the very high sound absorption coefficient, α, close to unity, of the electrospun PVP mats in the frequency range 200–800 Hz. The graphene addition affects, in a non-monotonous manner, the bell shaped curves of α versus frequency curves becoming sharper and moving to higher frequency at the lower graphene addition. The manuscript describes methods for producing hybrid silica microparticles and hybrid alginate beads with carbon nanotube (CNT) contents up to 4.5 and 30 wt.%, respectively. Silica hybrid aerogel microparticles with embedded nanotubes were obtained using a two-stage sol–gel method with a gelling process in an oil-emulsion. Alginate hybrid aerogels with embedded nanotubes were obtained using cross-linking reactions. The following methods were used to measure the structural characteristics of obtained materials: nitrogen adsorption porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and others. It is shown that specific surface area and pore volume increase with the increase of CNT content in silica aerogel microparticles. Obtained aerogels were tested as adsorbents for argon–oxygen separation. The alginate hybrid aerogel with 30 wt.% CNT content has the best argon adsorption selectivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanoparticles of graphene and carbon nanotubes are attractive materials for the improvement of mechanical and barrier properties and for the functionality of biodegradable polymers for packaging applications. However, the increase of the manufacture and consumption increases the probability of exposure of humans and the environment to such nanomaterials; this brings up questions about the risks of nanomaterials, since they can be toxic. For a risk assessment, it is crucial to know whether airborne nanoparticles of graphene and carbon nanotubes can be released from nanocomposites into the environment at their end-life, or whether they remain embedded in the matrix. In this work, the release of graphene and carbon nanotubes from the poly(lactic) acid nanocomposite films were studied for the scenarios of: (i) biodegradation of the matrix polymer at the disposal of wastes; and (ii) combustion and fire of nanocomposite wastes. Thermogravimetric analysis in air atmosphere, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to verify the release of nanoparticles from nanocomposite films. The three factors model was applied for the quantitative and qualitative risk assessment of the release of graphene and carbon nanotubes from nanocomposite wastes for these scenarios. Reduced-graphene-oxide-supported bimetallic Fe/Ni nanoparticles were synthesized in this study for the removal of crystal violet (CV) dye from aqueous solutions. This material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, N2-sorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The influence of independent parameters (namely, initial dye concentration, initial pH, contact time, and temperature) on the removal efficiency were investigated via Box–Behnken design (BBD). Artificial intelligence (i.e., artificial neural network, genetic algorithm, and particle swarm optimization) was used to optimize and predict the optimum conditions and obtain the maximum removal efficiency. The zero point of charge (pHZPC) of rGO/Fe/Ni composites was determined by using the salt addition method. The experimental equilibrium data were fitted well to the Freundlich model for the evaluation of the actual behavior of CV adsorption, and the maximum adsorption capacity was estimated as 2000.00 mg/g. The kinetic study discloses that the adsorption processes can be satisfactorily described by the pseudo-second-order model. The values of Gibbs free energy change (ΔG0), entropy change (ΔS0), and enthalpy change (ΔH0) demonstrate the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption of CV onto rGO/Fe/Ni composites.
