Permafrost is a significant part of the cryosphere, which has gained increasing attention from scientists, policy-makers, and the general public due to global warming, environmental degradation, water shortages, and intense human activities. Although many permafrost research review articles have been published, these studies were predominantly limited to either one subject or one field, while systematic studies about permafrost based on bibliometric analysis methods remain limited. We aim to fill this gap by conducting a bibliometric analysis of 13,697 articles in the field of permafrost research from 1942 to 2021, collected from the Web of Science core collection database. The results indicate that permafrost research is a typically multi-author, multi-country, and multi-institution cooperative field, involved in many research fields. The cumulative number of publications has presented an exponential increase over the past 80 years, with an average annual growth rate of 10.40%. Since 2000, China has seen a rapid growth in the number of publications per year, surpassing the USA in 2016 and leading in the years since then. In addition, the authors from China have great contributions in publications, and there is good room for permafrost development in the future according to the authors' M-index ranking. After the analysis of authors' keywords, we found that, compared to the conventional methods, machine learning and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) are new technological approaches introduced in recent years, and the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau has become a popular study area. The results presented here can help related researchers, scholars, and students in the field to better understand the past developments, current status, and future trends of permafrost research. Furthermore, this paper presents and expands the general process of the bibliometric method used in permafrost studies, which can provide researchers with new inspirations and improve discipline research approach. Boreal peatlands are significant natural sources of methane and especially vulnerable to abrupt climate change. However, the controlling factors of CH4 emission in boreal peatlands are still unclear. In this study, we investigated CH4 fluxes and abiotic factors (temperature, water table depth, active layer depth, and dissolved CH4 concentrations in pore water) during the growing seasons in 2010 and 2011 both in shrub-sphagnum-and sedge-dominated plant communities in continuous permafrost zone of Northeast China. The objective of our study was to examine the effects of vegetation types and abiotic factors on CH4 fluxes from a boreal peatland. In Eriophorum-dominated community, mean CH4emissions were 1.015 and 0.801 mg m-2 h-1 in 2010 and 2011, respectively. CH4 fluxes (0.384 mg m-2h-1) released from the shrub-mosses-dominated community were lower than that from Eriophorum-dominated community. Moreover, in Eriophoru m-dominated community, CH4 fluxes showed a significant temporal pattern with a peak value in late August both in 2010 and 2011. However, no distinct seasonal s variation was observed in the CH4 flux in the shrub-mosses-dominated community. Interestingly, both in Eriophorum- and shrub-sphagnum-dominated communities, CH4 fluxes did not show close correlation with air or soil temperature and water table depth, whereas CH4 emissions correlated well to active layer depth and CH4 concentration in soil pore water, especially in Eriophorum-dominated community. Our results suggest that CH4 released from the thawed CH4-rich permafrost layer may be a key factor controlling CH4 emissions in boreal peatlands, and highlight that CH4 fluxes vary with vegetation type in boreal peatlands. Against the background of global warming, permafrost areas are facing increasing thawing, and the threat to the surface of the Qinghai–Tibet Engineering Corridor (QTEC) is serious. It is imperative to understand the current surface deformation and analyze the changes spatiotemporal characteristics for future warnings. At present, observation of a long time series and overall coverage of vertical ground deformation in QTEC are lacking. This paper takes the permafrost deformation of the QTEC as its research object. It uses the pretreated LiCSAR product and combines it with the LiCSBAS package to obtain monitoring results of the long time series deformation of the engineering corridor's surface. The SAR image acquisition date is taken as the constraint, the results covering the whole processing area are selected, and then the vertical deformation information covering the entire engineering corridor area by ignoring the north–south displacement is calculated. The results show that the surface of the study area, as a whole, slightly subsided between May 2017 and March 2022, and the vertical deformation rate was mostly distributed at −27.068 mm/yr − 18.586 mm/yr, with an average of −1.06 mm/yr. Vertical deformation dominated at 52.84 percent of the study area, of which settlement accounted for 27.57 percent and uplift accounted for 25.27 percent. According to the statistics of the normal distribution of deformation velocity per pixel, a total of 77% of the engineering corridor was stable, with a vertical deformation rate between −6.964 mm/yr and −4.844 mm/yr, and 17.7% of the region was sub-stable, with a settling rate of −12.868 mm/yr − –6.964 mm/yr. The unstable regions included areas with settlement rates greater than 12.868 mm/yr and uplift rates greater than 10.748 mm/yr, representing 4.4 percent and 0.9 percent of the total area, respectively, for a total of 5.3 percent. The results of this paper can be used as the theoretical basis and as basic data for decision making and scientific research in various departments, and they are of great significance for surface stability assessment and early warnings along engineering corridors and traffic projects. The Tibetan Plateau stands as one of China's largest middle and low latitude permafrost regions. However, the effects of global warming and human activities have led to permafrost thawing, inducing surface instability and posing significant threats to infrastructure and indigenous communities. The deployment of Lu Tan-1 (LT-1), China's premier L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation, offers a novel opportunity to assess these changes. This paper evaluates the deformation of critical engineering corridors, such as the Qinghai-Tibet Railway (QTR) and the Qinghai-Tibet Highway (QTH), utilizing time-series InSAR techniques with LT-1 SAR constellation data. We introduce both Stacking InSAR and a multi-baseline persistent scatterer multitemporal (MT-InSAR) method to enhance permafrost and engineering corridor deformation detection capabilities. Results obtained through the MT-InSAR approach reveal line-of-sight (LOS) deformation velocities of permafrost in the Beiluhe region ranging from -90 mm/y to approximately 70 mm/y, with an average velocity amplitude of 0.06 m/y. Differential displacement between alpine meadows and alpine deserts across the Beiluhe region is successfully discerned using LT-1 SAR data. Deformation velocities of QTR, QTH were found to be lower than that of permafrost, with average velocities of 0.027 m/y. These findings underscore the LT-1 SAR constellation's potential to serve as a valuable SAR data source for monitoring engineering corridor deformation within the Tibetan Plateau permafrost region. Currently, little is available on how mercury (Hg) methylation couples with soil organic matter decomposition in degraded permafrost in high northern latitudes, where the climate is becoming warmer rapidly. Here, we revealed the complex interactions between soil organic matter (SOM) mineralization, dissolved organic matter (DOM) and methylmercury (MeHg) production based on an 87-day anoxic warming incubation experiment. Results supported remarkably promotion effects of warming on MeHg production, by 130%-205% on average. Total mercury (THg) loss under warming treatment depended on marsh types but showed an increasing trend on the whole. Warming yielded higher proportions of MeHg to THg (%MeHg), increased by 123%-569%. As expected, greenhouse gas emission was significantly enhanced by warming. Warming also strengthened fluorescence intensities of fulvic-like and protein-like DOM, with contributions to total fluorescence intensities of 49%-92% and 8%-51%, respectively. DOM and its spectral features explained 60% variation of MeHg, and the explanation increased to 82% in conjunction with greenhouse gas emissions. The structural equation model implied that warming, greenhouse gas emission, and humification of DOM had positive effects on Hg methylation potential, while microbial-derived DOM showed negative effects on MeHg. Parts of sections in permafrost regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway (QTR) have been deformed due to permafrost degradation, the global warming and human activities. Therefore, monitoring the subgrade settlement of the QTR in permafrost regions has been a major working in QTR maintenance. For this reason, this paper investigates the subsidence characteristics and derivative mechanisms of railway subgrades in the permafrost regions of the QTR. Additionally, it analyses the impact mechanisms of surface temperature changes on the subsidence of permafrost subgrades. Building on this investigation, a C-I-GWO-BP neural network prediction model was developed to forecast subgrade settlement in permafrost regions. The findings reveal a substantial correlation (R2 = 0.834) between the deformation of railway subgrades in permafrost regions and changes in surface temperature. Meanwhile，with the intensification of global warming and human activities, the subsidence of permafrost subgrade has shown an increasing trend year by year. The primary areas of deformation are predominantly concentrated in ice-rich permafrost regions, including rivers, lakes, and snowmelt runoff areas. Additionally, when compared to traditional BP neural network models, the C-I-GWO-BP neural network prediction model proposed in this article showcases diminished prediction errors and heightened accuracy in identifying optimal weights and thresholds. As global temperatures rise, permafrost is degraded. Permafrost degradation alters vegetation phenology and community composition, thereby affecting local and regional ecosystems. The Xing'an Mountains, located on the southern edge of the Eurasian permafrost region, are very sensitive to the impact of permafrost degradation on ecosystems. Climate change has direct effects on permafrost and vegetation growth, and analysis of the indirect effects of permafrost degradation on vegetation phenology based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) can explain the internal impact mechanisms of ecosystem components. Based on the temperature at the top of permafrost (TTOP) model, which was used to simulate the spatial distribution of permafrost areas in the Xing'an Mountains from 2000 to 2020, the areas of the three permafrost types showed a decreasing trend. The mean annual surface temperature (MAST) increased significantly at a rate of 0.008 °C year -1 from 2000 to 2020, and the southern boundary of the permafrost region moved north by 0.1-1 degrees. The average NDVI value of the permafrost region increased significantly in 8.34 % of the region. The significant correlations between NDVI and permafrost degradation, temperature and precipitation in the permafrost degradation region were 92.06 % (80.19 % positive, 11.87 % negative), 50.37 % (42.72 % positive, 7.65 % negative), and 81.59 % (36.25 % positive, 45.34 % negative), and were mainly distributed along the southern boundary of the permafrost region. A significance test of phenology in the Xing'an Mountains showed that the end of the growing season (EOS) and the length of the growing season (GLS) were significantly delayed and prolonged in the southern sparse island permafrost region. Sensitivity analysis showed that permafrost degradation was the main factor that affected the start of the growing season (SOS) and GLS. When the effects of temperature, precipitation, and sunshine duration were excluded, the regions with a significant positive correlation between permafrost degradation and SOS (20.96 %) and GLS (28.55 %) were located in both continuous and discontinuous permafrost regions. The regions with a significant negative correlation between permafrost degradation and SOS (21.11 %) and GLS (8.98 %) were mainly distributed on the southern edge of the island permafrost region. This paper attempts to reveal the enrichment status, spatial characteristics and material sources of typical soil trace elements at permafrost section along National Highway 214 on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Therefore, the samples of typical trace elements in surface soil, being located at the northern slope of Bayan Kara Mountains, were collected and tested. The concentrations of typical trace elements in soil were analysed by mathematical statistics, spatial analysis and ecological assessment. The results show that: (1) the concentrations of As, Cd and Hg in the soil are higher than the local background values, and their degrees of variation were high. There was a certain degree of accumulation. Soil As and Hg elements constitute "slight pollution", indicating there is a none-to-slight ecological hazard. (2) The distributions of soil As, Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations are lower near the highway and increase with distance from it and then become relatively low further away. The distributions of Cr, Cu, Hg and Ni concentrations show no obvious trends in any direction. (3) The spatial heterogeneity of typical trace elements in soil is affected by soil organic matter (SOM), cation exchange capacity (CEC), pH, slope curvature and aspect. At the local scale, soil texture and topography were the main affecting factors. China's largest high-latitude permafrost distribution zone is in Northeast China. With the intensification of global warming and engineering construction, the carbon stored in permafrost will gradually thaw and be released in the form of methane gas. However, research on the changes in methane concentration and emission sources in this area is still unclear. In this paper, the AIRS (Atmospheric Infrared Sounder) data carried by the Aqua satellite were used to analyze the distribution and change trends in the overall methane concentration in the near-surface troposphere in Northeast China from 2003 to 2022. These data, combined with national meteorological and on-site monitoring data, were used to study the methane emission characteristics and sources in the permafrost area in Northeast China. The results show that the methane concentration in the near-surface troposphere of Northeast China is mainly concentrated in the permafrost area of the Da and Xiao Xing'an Mountains. From 2003 to 2022, the methane concentration in the near-surface troposphere of the permafrost area in Northeast China showed a rapid growth trend, with an average linear trend growth rate of 4.787 ppbv/a. In addition, the methane concentration in the near-surface troposphere of the permafrost area shows a significant bimodal seasonal variation pattern. The first peak appears in summer (June–August), with its maximum value appearing in August, and the second peak appears in winter (December–February), with its maximum value appearing in December. Combined with ground surface methane concentration monitoring, it was found that the maximum annual ground surface methane concentration in degraded permafrost areas occurred in spring, causing the maximum average growth rate in methane concentration, also in spring, in the near-surface troposphere of permafrost areas in Northeast China (with an average value of 6.05 ppbv/a). The growth rate of methane concentration in the southern permafrost degradation zone is higher than that in the northern permafrost stable zone. In addition, with the degradation of permafrost, the geological methane stored deep underground (methane hydrate, coal seam, etc., mainly derived from the accumulation of ancient microbial origin) in the frozen layer will become an important source of near-surface troposphere methane in the permafrost degradation area. Due to the influence of high-permeability channels after permafrost degradation, the release rate of methane gas in spring is faster than predicted, and the growth rate of methane concentration in the near-surface troposphere of permafrost areas can be increased by more than twice. The Muli permafrost area is the only midlatitude permafrost area where natural gas hydrates (NGHs) have been drilled. Although a series of achievements has been made in studies on NGH accumulation conditions in the permafrost area, related studies on gas hydrate stability zones, gas sources and groundwater are still controversial and need further work. Based on geophysical, geological and geochemical data, this paper systematically elaborates the main NGH accumulation conditions in the Muli area in terms of the pressure‒temperature stability conditions, fault structure, gas composition, gas source, reservoir characteristics, groundwater distribution and topographic characteristics. The results show that the thicknesses of the NGH stability zone range from 491.0 to 962.7 m. The fault structure can provide a pathway for hydrocarbon gas migration from deep to NGH stability zones, in which thrust faults can prevent the upwards migration of gas by sealing it below the hanging wall block. Rock fractures in the NGH stability zone can not only be gas migration channels, but also serve as a reservoir space for NGH accumulation. The hydrocarbon gas of NGHs shows multiple origins and is mainly composed of oil-associated gas. The formation of frost mounds related to the overpressured gas ejection caused by NGH decomposition may imply the existence of NGHs. Synthetically, similarities and differences in NGH accumulation conditions between the Muli permafrost area and other high-latitude permafrost areas are proposed, and the 'regression' NGH accumulation pattern in the Muli area is constructed. The study results can enrich theoretical knowledge of terrestrial NGH accumulation, and provide scientific guidance for NGH exploration in midlatitude permafrost areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau is the highest and largest permafrost area in the middle and low latitudes of China. In this region, permafrost thaw settlement is the main form of expressway subgrade disaster. Therefore, the quantitative analysis and regionalization study of permafrost thaw settlement deformation are of great significance for expressway construction and maintenance in the Qinghai–Tibet region. This paper establishes a thaw settlement prediction model using the thaw settlement coefficient and thaw depth. The thaw depth was predicted by the mean annual ground temperatures and active-layer thicknesses using the Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network model, and the thaw settlement coefficient was determined according to the type of ice content. Further, the distribution characteristics of thaw settlement risk of the permafrost subgrade in the study region were mapped and analyzed. The results showed that the thaw settlement risk was able to be divided into four risk levels, namely significant risk, high risk, medium risk and low risk levels, with the areas of these four risk levels covering 3868.67 km2, 1594.21 km2, 2456.10 km2 and 558.78 km2, respectively, of the total study region. The significant risk level had the highest proportion among all the risk levels and was mainly distributed across the Chumar River Basin, Beiluhe River Basin and Gaerqu River Basin regions. Permafrost is strongly associated with human well‐being and has become a frontier of cryospheric science. Professor Guodong Cheng is one of the most outstanding geocryologists in China. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993 and served as the president of the International Permafrost Association from 1993–1998. In the early 1980s, Professor Cheng proposed the hypothesis of the repeated‐segregation mechanism for the formation of thick‐layered ground ice near the permafrost table. Subsequently, in the early 2000s, he proposed the "proactive roadbed cooling" concept and led the successful development of a series of specific engineering measures that were fully applied in the Qinghai–Tibet Railway Project. Furthermore, he developed a conceptual model to describe the influences of changing permafrost on the groundwater system and discovered the "sink‐holing effect" (channeling with improved hydraulic conductivity of warming permafrost). Professor Cheng has also developed theories on the three‐dimensional zonation and proposed a classification system and an altitude model for high‐altitude permafrost distribution. On this special occasion of Professor Cheng's 80th birthday, this paper summarizes his outstanding achievements on permafrost science, hoping the permafrost research community will carry forward the momentum to further advance permafrost science worldwide. Permafrost degradation and the development of thermokarst lakes are important factors driving the variability of regional hydrologic processes. Hydrogeochemical and isotopic analyses are important methods for investigating the hydrologic processes of thermokarst lakes. This study focused on comparing the chemical and hydrogeochemical characteristics between lake water and groundwater during the melting of the active layer in a typical thermokarst lake region on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Ninety-five samples were collected during different periods of active layer melting and analyzed using statistical, isotope, hydrogeochemical, and modeling methods. Statistical results showed that the average concentrations of almost all ions were lower in lake water than in groundwater, with wider spatial variability in groundwater. The lake water is of the ClNa and HCO 3 -Ca type with low TDS (total dissolved solids), whereas groundwater is of the HCO 3 -Ca and mixed type (or transition type) with high TDS. The chemical types of the lake water and groundwater are mainly driven by rock weathering. In terms of the saturation index (SI), halite and gypsum are unsaturated dissolved, whereas dolomite and calcite are generally saturated. Evaporation significantly affects the chemical composition of groundwater, while the hydrochemical compositions of lake water are relatively stable under the joint control of evaporation, precipitation, surface runoff, and groundwater. The isotopic analysis results showed that the contribution of permafrost meltwater and precipitation to groundwater and lake water varied during different stages of active layer melting. According to hydrogeochemical modeling, the main chemical reactions in groundwater are the precipitation of calcite and the dissolution of halite, dolomite, and gypsum. The intensity of groundwater flow determines the degree of chemical reactions along the flow path at different stages of active layer melting. Autumn freeze-thaw period significantly influenced the soil temperature, moisture, nutrients, and then affected the structure and diversity of soil microbial community. In this paper, three types of wetlands in the permafrost region of Daxing'an Mountains were selected to investigate the greenhouse gas fluxes during the autumn freeze-thaw period. CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O fluxes during the autumn freeze-thaw period ranged from 24.76 to 124.06 mg m -2  h -1 , - 249.10 to 968.87 μg m -2  h -1 , and - 4.21 to 12.86 μg m -2  h -1 . CO 2 fluxes were mainly influenced by soil temperature and moisture. CH 4 fluxes were mainly influenced by temperature and soil moisture. And N 2 O fluxes were significantly affected by temperature, soil moisture, ammonia nitrogen, and nitrate nitrogen. Environmental factors could explain 64-73.2%, 51-85.4%, and 60.3-93.3% of temporal variation of CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O fluxes, respectively. Comparing different wetlands, the soil temperature was the significant factor to affect the CH 4 flux. Known as the third pole of the world, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has been experiencing rapid permafrost warming and thawing over the last few decades. However, the impact of permafrost distribution and hydrogeology on river hydrochemistry in alpine areas remains unclear. This study conducted four sampling campaigns to reveal the temporal and spatial variations in and factors driving river hydrochemistry in the upper reaches of the Heihe River, the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. We found that the concentrations of major ions and total dissolved solids (TDS) in river water showed substantial seasonal variations; the concentrations were generally lower during the initial thawing and thawed periods than during the initial freezing period. However, solute fluxes during the thawed period were much higher than those during the frozen period. The concentrations of major ions and TDS gradually decreased to a minimum from the permafrost meander (PM) section to the seasonal frost meander (SFM) section and then increased the seasonal frost canyon section. Using the revised forward model, we found that river solutes were contributed by carbonate weathering (mean 38.9%) > sulfide oxidation (22.9%) > evaporite dissolution (20.2%) > atmospheric precipitation (8.7%) > silicate weathering (5.0%) > glacial meltwater (4.3%). The higher TDS, Na + , Cl - , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and SO 4 2- concentrations in the PM section reflected the influence of freeze-out fractionation. The concentrations of major ions and TDS were lowest in the SFM section, indicating that the riparian porous aquifer was essential in regulating river hydrochemistry, thus reducing its spatiotemporal variations in the alpine area. In the mountain glacier-hillslope-riparian porous aquifer-river system, the river was mainly recharged by groundwater with insufficient water-rock interactions due to the rapid flow owing to the high elevation difference and high permeability of the riparian quaternary porous aquifers. Thawing permafrost has affected the structural integrity of buried warm pipelines in cold regions and poses an ongoing threat in the context of climate change. Therefore, characterizing variation in the engineering properties of pipeline foundation permafrost and its effect on the mechanical behavior of pipeline is important. In this paper, the ground temperature distributions around a buried warm pipeline and mechanical response of the pipeline to differential thaw settlement of foundation permafrost are investigated using thermal–mechanical sequential coupling simulation, based on the observational data collected from a selected monitoring site along the China-Russia crude oil pipelines in northeastern China. The results indicate that the thaw-induced settlement of pipeline foundation permafrost develops quickly with the formation and expansion of the thaw bulb in the first 10 years, and then increases slowly when the thaw bulb extends to the weathered granite. Differential thaw settlement will cause a significant change in the deformation and stress of the pipeline near the interface of strong and weak thaw settlement zones. When the length ratio of strong and weak thaw settlement zones is 1, the maximum stress of the pipeline with a thickness of 16 mm is approximately 45% of the allowable stress of X65 steel, and the pipeline remains safe for 30 years. However, the potential failure of the pipeline should be considered due to the continued ground thawing and warming and pipe material aging. As a major parameter in the energy balance of the ground surface, temperature represents the level of exchange of energy and moisture between the ground and air. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) has the permafrost region with the highest altitude and the largest area in low–middle latitude of the world. The variation in ground surface temperature has an impact on the existence and development of the permafrost. Therefore, the analysis of the ground surface temperature in the QTP is significant to reflect the energy exchange in permafrost regions. This paper collected solar radiation data and calculated the conversion coefficient from total solar radiation to long-wave radiation of the ground surface on different underlying surfaces. The ground surface temperature was inversely calculated and modified based on the reception of solar radiation on different underlying surfaces. A simplified calculation model of ground surface temperature was built to reflect the ground surface temperature on different underlying surfaces of the QTP. The calculation results were compared with MODIS and showed good fitness, providing a systematic and reliable method for calculating the ground surface temperature on the QTP. Monitoring pollution in Arctic regions is a challenging and important task, regardless of the way these lands are used. The summer 2019 expedition to the Yamal Peninsula revealed historic petroleum pollution of the tundra area adjacent to "Yamalsky" natural reserve. Soil, surface water and bottom sediments from a downhill lake, and herbaceous plant Eriophorum scheuchzeri samples were collected to address the origin and the level of the aged pollution, and to investigate, if E. scheuchzeri species could be a potential phytoremediation agent. Compositional GC-MS analysis of the soil organic matter showed that diesel fuel spillage affected the study area and the territories nearby. Weathered diesel compounds penetrated the soil and reached the permafrost layer at 85 cm depth. Petroleum hydrocarbon level peaked at 11% (wt) in the topsoil at the polluted site and 3% (wt) in the bottom sediments of the downhill lake, demonstrating chronic ecosystem exposure. The following ICP-MS analysis showed presence of trace elements (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Ag, Cd, Ba, Pb, Bi, U) in the soil, water, and E. scheuchzeri samples. Observed concentrations of V, Cr, Cd, Pb, Ni, and Zn in the soil samples exceeded the background values by 3.6, 2.3, 9.7, 2.9, and 3.0 times, respectively. V (0.4 mg/L) and Cr (0.12 mg/L) levels in the lake water exceeded the established national limits by 40 and 2.4 times, respectively, which demonstrated the possibility of pollution migration with groundwater or surface water. The plant E. scheuchzeri tolerated diesel pollution and stimulated natural attenuation, bioaccumulating Mo, Cd, Ba, and Bi in its tissue from the soil. Stable isotopes in wood lignin methoxyl groups (δ 2 H LM and δ 13 C LM values) have been suggested as valuable complementary paleoclimate proxies. In permafrost forests, tree growth is influenced by multiple factors, however temperature appears to have the strongest impact on tree growth and, therefore, on carbon cycling. To test whether δ 2 H LM and δ 13 C LM values of trees from permafrost regions might record climate parameters, two dominant tree species (Larix gmelinii, larch, and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica, pine) collected from a permafrost forest in China's Greater Hinggan Mountains, were investigated. The two tree species larch and pine covered time spans of 1940 to 2013 and 1870 to 2013, respectively. Results showed significant correlations of pine and larch δ 2 H LM values and larch δ 13 C LM values with temperatures and in particular with the mean temperature of the growing season from April to August. However, only weak correlations of δ 2 H LM and δ 13 C LM values with moisture conditions, such as precipitation amount and relative humidity were observed. In addition, species specificity in the climate response was most obvious for δ 13 C LM values. Compared to a temperature reconstruction based on tree ring width, pine δ 2 H LM -based reconstruction showed strongest spatial correlations with regional temperature. This article presents a study of water-heat coupled problems of frozen soil along the Mohe-Daqing crude oil pipeline with thermosyphons. It is known that the Mohe-Daqing pipeline goes through four different kinds of frozen soil classified by ice content in soil. To determine the region with high tendency of permafrost thawing, the temperature field and water content field of the four types of frozen soil were first investigated in this paper. Taking freezing and thawing risk, typical geological condition and other factors into consideration, the soil temperature field of pipeline located at the permafrost swamp area was calculated numerically. Comparative study was also carried out for soil temperature field with and without thermosyphons to investigate the cooling effect of thermosyphons. It is evident that thermosyphons have great influence on temperature drop of permafrost, and this influence is especially magnificent in winter. In contrast to soil temperature without thermosyphons, installing the thermosyphons could reduce the soil temperature right beneath the pipeline by approximately 4°C. The surface displacement by seasonally freezing bulge and thawing subsidence are the main hazards for engineering construction in permafrost regions, especially for the Qinghai-Tibet railway. One of the main problems is how to monitor the frozen ground's displacement in the process of construction and protection of the Qinghai-Tibetan railway. The technology of Permanent Scatterers (PS) has been successfully used to detect the long-term subsidence at urban areas. For detecting the subsidence of the frozen earth on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, this paper extended the capability of the technology of PS to investigate deformation phenomena in vegetated area. The paper analyses an interferometric phase model, and presents improved PS algorithms for separating different components in interferometric phase. The proposed technique is implemented using ENVISAT ASAR images to detect the deformation over permafrost region of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The results are in concordance with results provided by a traditional ground levelling, which encourages future development using the Permanent Scatterers method to analyse deformation of the frozen earth on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Express highways are roads of high speed, large capacity, and transportation flexibility. The network of express highways in China has been developed over the last 30 years to accommodate the needs of a growing population and to facilitate economic development. Part of the network is in permafrost regions, where the construction and maintenance of these roads present significant engineering challenges due to permafrost degradation induced by climate warming and by construction. This paper summarizes the engineering problems encountered in the construction and maintenance of these express highways, and the mitigation techniques used to overcome them on new transportation projects in permafrost regions. Ten types of engineering problems along the Qinghai‐Tibet Highway, the oldest and longest highway in the permafrost regions of China are identified. Their main cause is related to permafrost degradation in the subgrade beneath the road subbase. Settlement of the highway embankment due to thaw consolidation of degrading permafrost is the dominant mechanical distress observed. Mitigation techniques, mainly for enhancing heat convection beneath express highways, are discussed along with their effects. Groundwater in China’s permafrost region is vital for humans and cold-climate ecosystems. Permafrost responses to global warming have significantly changed the spatio-temporal patterns and distribution of properties associated with the groundwater system. The main areas of current and past studies on permafrost hydrogeology in China include four aspects: groundwater distribution and dynamics in permafrost regions, interplay between groundwater and permafrost, the impact of permafrost degradation on groundwater, and the regional effect of groundwater changes on the environment in permafrost regions. Over the last 10 years, the development and use of coupled heat-transport and groundwater models have focused on the hydrogeology of permafrost, and on groundwater development and distribution in permafrost regions. Progress in groundwater-related research on issues surrounding permafrost regions of China are comprehensively summarized and discussed in this review paper, which should provide a theoretical basis for further study of the groundwater system and its effects on the ecological environment under climate change. Considering the difficulty in evaluating pipeline safety in permafrost region, the pipeline disaster safety evaluation index system in permafrost region is analyzed and established. A comprehensive weight determination method based on improved fuzzy analytic hierarchy process, entropy weight method and Lagrange algorithm is proposed, and a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model of permafrost pipeline safety is established. Taking the disaster safety evaluation of pipeline in the China-Russia crude oil permafrost region as an example, the proposed method is used to determine the comprehensive weight of disaster safety index of permafrost pipeline and carry out comprehensive safety evaluation. The permafrost in Northeast China is experiencing rapid degradation due to the influence of climate change and human activities, profoundly impacting the local ecological environment and engineering construction. Understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of long-term permafrost in this region is crucial; however, systematic research on this topic remains scarce. This study combines meteorological station data, MODIS land surface temperature (LST) datasets, and borehole locations to apply the surface frost number (SFn) model. This approach enables the simulation and estimation of the spatial distribution and changes in the area of the surface frost number without vegetation effects (SFnv) and permafrost temperature (PT) in Northeast China from 1971 to 2020. The area of the SFnv > 0.49 within the permafrost region decreased substantially from approximately 44.353 × 104 km2 to 19.909 × 104 km2 between 1971 and 2020, with a notable change in 1988. The area of permafrost calculated using PT < 0 was slightly smaller, declining from 39.388 × 104 km2 to 29.852 × 104 km2. There was also a significant increase in the area with PT ranging from −1 °C to 0 °C, indicating a decline in permafrost stability. Approximately 10.926 × 104 km2 of stable permafrost has been transformed into semi-stable and unstable permafrost. Moreover, from 1982 to 2020, the NDVI was negatively correlated with the area of stable permafrost and positively correlated with the area of transitional or unstable permafrost. Vegetation cover decreased as transitional or unstable permafrost degraded. The Qinghai-Tibet railway, the highest railway in terms of elevation, was built under the harshest of weather conditions in the world. A new technique, called the ventiduct embankment, was used for the first time in railway construction in the Qinghai-Tibet permafrost region of China to overcome the specific difficulties of the permafrost plateau. To evaluate its effectiveness, several full-scale test embankments were constructed at a representative field site, the Qingshuihe experimental section. The effectiveness of the ventiduct embankment structure has been verified by comparing it with the performance of the nearby control embankment in terms of permafrost table, settlement, and thaw depth. Lakes under natural conditions are potential indicators of climate change, but limited evidence has been proposed to explicitly explain the mechanisms of large-scale lake changes associated with climate. In this paper, satellite imageries from the 1970s to 2010 were compared to track the dynamic change patterns of plateau lakes. It aims to identify the forcing of climate change on the lakes in plateau regions of China. Results revealed that: (1) widespread expanding trends in the area and abundance of lakes on wetter plateau regions, by increasing precipitation and snow presented a positive effect on lake levels, as well as warming resulted glacier melting and permafrost degrading contributed to expansion of lakes in the regions covered by glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau by 58-62 % and of 13-20 % on the western Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang Plateau; (2) shrinkage lakes in the main portion of the arid regions were mainly caused by the decreasing wind speed resulted water balance change, irrigation and other human utilization of water resources. Although precipitation decreased, wind speed also has the most dominant impact on decreasing evaporation, followed by solar radiation, both of which offset the effect of increasing temperature, especially in eastern Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang Plateau; (3) thawing permafrost led to shrinkage of lakes in an area of seasonal permafrost, the shrinking and splitting of lakes in a discontinuous permafrost zone, and the rising of lake levels in an area of continuous permafrost; (4) the future of the plateau lakes under climate change must be in question, because the glacier and snow melting water is not sustainable for wetter regions, and the increasing water consumption caused by the farmland expansion for arid regions. On-site monitoring is very important for understanding formation mechanisms of frost hazards frequently occurring in pipeline foundation soils and for designing and deploying according mitigative measures in permafrost regions. Significant thaw subsidence of ground surfaces along the China-Russia Crude Oil Pipeline (CRCOP) from Mo'he to Daqing, Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China have been observed at some segments underlain by ice-rich, warm (>1.0°C) permafrost since the official operation in January 2011. Recent monitoring results of the thermal states of foundation soils at the kilometer post (KP) 304 site along the CRCOP are presented in this paper. The results indicate that during the period from 2012 to 2014, shallow soils (at the depths from 0.8 to 4.0 m from ground surface) has warmed by approximately 1.0°C in the lateral range of 1.2 to 2.1 m away from the pipeline axis, and deeper permafrost (such as at the depth of 15 m, or the depth of zero annual amplitude of ground temperatures) by 0.08°C per year 4 m away from the pipe axis, and 0.07°C per year 5 m away from the pipeline axis. The results indicate an all-season talik has developed around and along the CRCOP. The thaw bulb, with a faster lateral expansion (compared with the vertical growth), enlarges in summer and shrinks in winter. This research will provide important references and bases for evaluating thermal influences of warm pipeline on permafrost and for design, construction, operation and maintenance of pipelines in permafrost regions. Many highways and railways in western China are built on permafrost roadbed. Frost heave and thaw settlement might cause diseases to frozen soil roadbed, such as deformation and cracking. For long-term operation, frozen soil roadbed should be kept stable and durable. Therefore, this paper analyzes the distribution law of temperature field of roadbed in permafrost regions, under the effect of thermal stability. Based on the thermodynamic properties of permafrost, the authors analyzed the influence of engineering geological factors, roadbed structural factors, and natural environmental factors on the thermal stability of frozen soil roadbed. Next, the antifreeze mechanism of frozen soil roadbed was described, together with the calculation methods for the relevant parameters. Afterwards, the temperature field of the roadbed with low thermal conductivity insulation material was analyzed by two methods, namely, steady-state thermal analysis and transient thermal analysis, and the solving process of roadbed temperature field was explained in details. The proposed analysis method and solving algorithm were proved valid through experiments. The research results provide a reference for the reasonable design of frozen soil roadbed. Climate warming has resulted in significant changes in permafrost in Northeast China, leading to notable alterations in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. These changes are crucial for both the global carbon cycle and climate change, as well as directly impacting the sustainable development of ecosystems. In order to examine the SOC dynamics and the impact of permafrost changes on SOC, we investigate the changes of permafrost extent based on a regression model and TTOP (top temperature of permafrost) model and the relationship between land use and land cover (LULC), SOC stocks, and permafrost changes in Northeast China. The results showing a shrinking permafrost area from 37.43 × 104 km2 to 16.48 × 104 km2 during the period from the 1980s to the 2010s in Northeast China, and the SOC stock decreased by 24.18 Tg C from the 1980s to the 1990s and then rapidly increased by 102.84 Tg C in the 2000s. Permafrost degradation speeds up the succession of LULC, impacting about 90% of the SOC in permafrost regions. The relationship between permafrost changes and SOC in Northeast China shows that permafrost degradation significantly reduces SOC stocks in the short term but increases SOC stocks in the long term, and that LULC play a crucial role in regulating this relationship. The goals of this study are to acquire an understanding of permafrost status and deepening insights into the dynamics of SOC. Simultaneously, the study aims to furnish valuable scientific references for shaping policies on sustainable land use and management in the future, all the while advancing the cause of ecological equilibrium and sustainable development in Northeast China and other areas. Recent investigations into relict periglacial phenomena in northern and western China and on the Qinghai- Tibet Plateau provide information for delineating the extent of permafrost in China during the Late Pleistocene. Polygonal and wedge-shaped structures indicate that, during the local Last Glacial Maximum ( LLGM, between ∼35 and 10.5 ka BP), the southern limit of latitudinal permafrost in northern China advanced southward at least to ∼38-40° N in the east and to ∼37-39° N in the west. This represents an advance of about 5-10° of latitude beyond present-day permafrost limits. The lower limits of elevationally controlled permafrost on the Qinghai- Tibet Plateau and its peripheries were about 1000 m lower: this permafrost was largely continuous during the LLGM. This suggests a cooling of between 4 and 10° C, or more. This paper discusses the extent of permafrost during the LLGM and presents maps that have been constructed on the basis of extensive and integrative analysis of all reliable and pertinent data. The results indicate that the extent of LLGM permafrost in China was between ∼3.8 and 4.3×106 km2. This is 80 to 100% more than that of ∼2.15×106 km2 in the 1970s, and 120 to ∼150% more than that of ∼1.75×106 km2 today. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT To date, the mechanical control of drifting sand is the main method used for the protection of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway from damage. The thermal effect of sandy sediments which are held in place on the underlying permafrost is a key area of interest and the focus of this paper. A ground temperature investigation of the permafrost along the railway route was undertaken and results were related to the different mechanical control measures used to control moving sand which had resulted in varying sandy sediment thicknesses. The studies were conducted in the Hongliang River area of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from June 2010 to September 2010 using thermistor sensors. The results showed that the permafrost ground temperature and its daily variation, as well as the thawing depth of the active layer, decreased after the setting-up of sand movement controls which had resulted in the accumulation of thick sandy sediments within the outside fringe of sand-control engineering, or a covering of thin sandy sediments within the inside trackside (fringe) of sand-control engineering. Below the thick sandy sediment cover accumulated by sand-blocking fences, the average maximum temperature decreased. Average temperature decreased and the average depth of seasonal thawing (average thinning) were 3·38°C, 0·54°C and 0·48 m, respectively. Below the thin sand sediment cover accumulated by the checkerboard sand barriers, the values for the same parameters were 1·02°C, 0·21°C and 0·5 m, respectively. This study found that the mechanical control of sand does not only protect the railway from obstruction, but also facilitates permafrost stability, which in turn can help promote safety in railway operations. This paper presents new field observations that assist in further defining the extent of Last Permafrost Maximum (LPM) permafrost and frozen ground in north China. In that respect, this region is specific by its arid environment and continental position. Bedrock exposures and sand and gravel pits were examined along a south-north transect from southern Ordos as far as the vicinity of Dongsheng District, Ordos City on the Ordos Plateau (North China). Attention focussed upon the recognition of sand-wedge remains and possible cryoturbations. Two types of wedge structures were recognized: type A wedges extend to depths in excess of 3.0 m and are thought to have formed under conditions of continuous permafrost. Type B wedges are restricted to the upper 1.5 m and are thought to reflect discontinuous permafrost and/or deep seasonal frost. OSL dating of wedge infills indicates that type A wedges formed between 23–19 ka and younger type B wedges formed until the early Holocene. It is now possible to delineate a more exact position of the boundary between continuous permafrost and discontinuous permafrost and/or deep seasonal frost on the Ordos Plateau during the LPM. In-situ monitoring system is absolutely necessary for a long-distance linear pipeline infrastructure in permafrost regions due to the complicated interaction between buried pipeline and its harsh permafrost environment. To study this complex problem, a comprehensive in-situ monitoring system has been designed and established along the China–Russia Crude Oil Pipeline (CRCOP), which is one of vital energy channels for importing crude oil from Russia to China. This monitoring system can record the meteorological data, ground temperature and water content within the permafrost foundation, vertical settlement of the oil pipe, ground surface deformation on the pipeline right-of-way (on-ROW), as well as the thaw bulb around the pipeline at four sites with different engineering geological conditions. In this paper, the layout and instrumentation of the whole monitoring system and monitoring methods are described in detail, and then the thermal regime of permafrost on-ROW and off-ROW and cooling performance of the mitigative measures on foundation soils are evaluated. Results show that heat dissipated from the CRCOP lead to the rapid degradation of permafrost on-ROW and produce different sizes of thaw bulb around the oil pipelines. The mitigative measures, including insulation layer, two-phase closed thermosyphon and U-shaped air-ventilated pipes, are effective to minimize permafrost degradation and ensure the thermal stability of permafrost foundation along the CRCOP. Some recommendations are proposed for future research and for the monitoring system to be improved. The main portion of Tibetan Plateau has experienced statistically significant warming over the past 50 years, especially in cold seasons. This paper aims to identify and characterize the dynamics of inland lakes that located in the hinterland of Tibetan Plateau responding to climate change. We compared satellite imageries in late 1970s and early 1990s with recent to inventory and track changes in lakes after three decades of rising temperatures in the region. It showed warm and dry trend in climate with significant accelerated increasing annual mean temperature over the last 30 years, however, decreasing periodically annual precipitation and no obvious trend in potential evapotranspiration during the same period. Our analysis indicated widespread declines in inland lake's abundance and area in the whole origin of the Yellow River and southeastern origin of the Yangtze River. In contrast, the western and northern origin of the Yangtze River revealed completely reverse change. The regional lake surface area decreased by 11,499 ha or 1.72% from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, and increased by 6,866 ha or 1.04% from the early 1990s to 2004. Shrinking inland lakes may become a common feature in the discontinuous permafrost regions as a consequence of warming climate and thawing permafrost. Furthermore, obvious expanding were found in continuous permafrost regions due to climate warming and glacier retreating. This paper studies the relationship between net primary productivity (NPP) and annual average air temperature (GT) at 0cm above ground in permafrost regions by using revised Chikugo NPP model, cubic spline interpolating functions, and nonlinear regression methods. The source regions of the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers were selected as the research areas. Results illustrate that: (1) There is significant non-linear relationship between NPP and GT in various typical years; (2) The maximum value of NPP is 6.17, 5.87, 7.73, and 5.41 DM·t·hm·a respectively, and the corresponding GT is 7.1, 10.0, 21.2, and 8.9°C respectively in 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2007; (3) In 1980, the sensitivity of NPP to GT is higher than in 1990, 2000 and 2007. This tendency shows that the NPP presents change from fluctuation to an adaptation process over time; (4) During 1980∼2007, the accumulated NPP was reduced to 8.05, and the corresponding carrying capacity of theoretical livestock reduced by 11%; (5) The shape of the demonstration region of ecological compensation system, livelihood support system, and science appraisal system in the source regions of Yangtze and Yellow Rivers are an important research for increasing the adaptation capacity and balancing protection and development. Abstract: The design and building of a pipeline in permafrost regions challenge engineers and scientists in many regards, and the geohazards resulting from the (differential) frost heaving and thaw settlement of the pipeline foundation soils present one of the most daunting tasks. The China–Russia Crude Oil Pipeline, a spur line from the Siberia–Pacific Pipeline System, presented unique scientific and engineering problems because of: 1) extensive presence of the more ice-rich permafrost in boreal forests and swamps; 2) an insistence on a buried construction mode because of concerns about the potential for frequent forest fires and other safety issues; 3) great uncertainties in the temperatures of oil being transported although the given estimated oil temperature of −6.4 to +3.6°C entering the Mo''he Pump Station, and the estimated oil temperatures could vary from about −6 to +10°C along the southward pipeline route; 4) the limited lead time for detailed surveys on engineering geology along the pipeline routes and for engineering design; 5) very much limited investment and a limited number of engineers experienced in designing and building a major pipeline in an area where about one-half of its length would be impacted by generally warm (−3 to 0°C) permafrost. Nevertheless, the pipeline engineers and permafrost scientists strived to economically build and satisfactorily operate the first major crude oil pipeline in the boreal ecosystem in China. The major results on the formation mechanisms and mitigative measures for the (differential) frost heave and thaw settlement were presented in the eight papers in this special issue on permafrost pipeline, and one additional paper on the Golmud–Lhasa Oil Products Pipeline on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau was also included. They may provide insights to the understanding of pipeline–permafrost interactions and benefit the future design and construction of pipelines in similar northern environments. Abstract: In allusion to the problems of the frozen soil engineering geology, the roadbed stability with climate change in construction of the Qinghai–Tibet Railway (QTR), this paper provides overview of the frozen soil engineering problems before and during the QTR constructions. Based on the experiences and lessons learned from the road construction in permafrost areas, the authors recommended that the principle of “positive cooling” of the railroad roadbed by lowering permafrost temperatures should be used in the design of the QTR, rather than that of “passive protection” of permafrost through increasing thermal resistance of the roadway, such as simply increasing fill thickness and/or using thermal-insulation materials. This is especially important for the road sections in warm, ice-rich permafrost areas. In addition, this paper reviews several methods for “cooled roadbed” by controlling radiation, convection and conduction through modifying roadway structure and using different fill materials. Meanwhile, the authors also provide information on some existing problems and future monitoring programs along the QTR. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: As far as the railway embankment in permafrost regions is concerned, its mechanical properties are closely related to soil temperature. Especially for the embankment in the warm permafrost regions (mean annual ground temperatures range from 0–−1.5 °C), its stability will change greatly with minor temperature variations. The Qinghai–Tibet Railway (QTR) is approximately 1142 km long, of which 275 km are underlain by warm permafrost. Furthermore, the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) is in an active seismic zone. Thus, the seismic stability, liquefaction, and deformation of the embankment of QTR are critical issues on safe operation. However, there are few papers concerning about the seismic response of railway embankment in permafrost regions. This paper will propose a thermal-dynamic coupled model, and the model and its specific analytical procedure can be described as follows. Firstly, based on the governing differential equations of transient temperature field with phase change, the temperature distributions of railway embankment are computed and analyzed by numerical method. Then, since the mechanical properties of frozen soil are effected by temperature, the dynamic consolidation equations of Biot, whose parameters are relative to temperature, are deduced in detail by adopting dynamic consolidation theory. Lastly, by using this numerical model, the seismic response of the QTR embankment is simulated, and the characteristics of seismic response, such as excess pore water pressure, stress and displacement, are analyzed in detail. Meanwhile, the seismic stability of this embankment is evaluated. The results show that this numerical model is able to simulate seismic response of embankment in permafrost regions. This paper discusses the effect of route direction, embankment height, and pavement type on the thermal field of embankments built in permafrost regions. A finite-element model (FEM) is adopted to simulate diverse conditions of the embankment. The 30-year meteorological data including the solar radiation, air temperature, and wind velocity are used as the boundary conditions for the Qinghai-Tibet Highway. The results obtained from the FEM calculations are found to be in good agreement with the actual measurements on the thermal field. Further, the results show that route direction has great impact on the equilibrium of the thermal field within embankments in permafrost regions. The thermal imbalance is more obvious for embankments in the east–west direction and less in the north–south direction. In addition, the thermal asymmetry is closely related to seasonal variation and it is more pronounced in winter and less in summer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The delineation of the southern boundary of the latitudinal permafrost in the north of China in the period of late Pleistocene, i.e. the last glaciation maximum (LGM), has been hampered for two reasons. Firstly, previous studies were limited to the eastern part of the north of China, and, secondly, the ages of the permafrost had not been determined systematically. In this paper, we suggest that the southern boundary of the high latitudinal permafrost in the north of China is bounded by approximately 38-40°N (eastern part) and 37-39°N (western part) lines of latitude based on our interpretation of periglacial phenomena and their implication to the environment during the late Pleistocene, and this southern boundary is plotted for the first time. Also, we reconstrnct the migration of the southern latitudinal permafrost boundary and the environment after LGM. It is proposed that two cold stages occurred in the LGM at 26 kaBP and 23-13 kaBP, when the annual mean temperature was 8 -12°C lower than at present. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-latitude permafrost peatlands are sensitive to global warming, and understanding their paleohydrological evolution is critical for assessing future hydrological and environmental changes. This paper presents a diatom record from a peat deposit covering the past 3300 years to reconstruct the moisture and acidity conditions in the Tuqiang permafrost peatland in the northern Greater Khingan Mountains of northeast China. Our findings are integrated with previously published records of plant macrofossils, palynology, and geochemistry from the same profile. From 3300 to 2800 cal yr BP, planktonic and benthic diatoms were equally abundant, indicating relatively high moisture conditions, while the low abundance of acidophilous diatoms reflects relatively high pH during this interval. Pollen data show dominance by sedges with input from the surrounding Pinus forest, while LOI data and lithology suggest that the site was a non-peat accumulating wetland. During the period 2800–1100 cal yr BP, the dominance of planktonic diatoms indicates a wetter local environment, concurrent with the dominance of peat-forming sedges (Eriophorum), indicating the development of a peatland. Between 1100 and 500 cal yr BP, a short-lived increase in acidophilous diatoms (Eunotia) marks a decrease in pH. Since 500 cal yr BP, the dominance of benthic diatoms reflects a drier environment, while a vegetation shift from an Eriophorum -dominated rich fen to a Sphagnum- and Ericaceae-dominated poor fen. An increase in Eunotia diatoms prior to the Sphagnum peak may indicate that diatoms are more sensitive to local acidified habitats than moss. Peatland development in the northern Greater Khingan Mountains was likely induced by the onset of a cooler and wetter climate starting at approximately 2800 cal yr BP, a scenario supported by regional paleoclimate records. Since 700 cal yr BP, the peatland has been affected by both anthropogenic activities and climatic changes, as a drying climate and intensified human activities around the study area reduced diatom species diversity and peat accumulation. Under the background of future global warming and enhanced human activities, the decreasing species diversity and carbon accumulation rate of peatlands in high-latitude permafrost regions need more attention. • Diatoms can indicate local moisture and acidity in permafrost peatlands. • Diatoms are likely more sensitive to microhabitats than bryophytes. • TQ peatland formed after 2800 cal yr BP caused by the cooler and wetter climate. • Rich-fen shifted to poor-fen which co-influenced by deforestation and dry climate at LIA. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is one of the middle- and low-latitude regions with the most developed and well-preserved periglacial phenomena and remains in the world. On the northeastern QTP, periglacial remains are widespread and vital for investigating the evolution of regional periglacial and permafrost environments. The recently discovered periglacial remains on the northeastern QTP are mostly cryogenic wedges of Late Pleniglacial age (30–10 ka), deep and large cryogenic wedges mostly formed during 30–19 ka ago. Shallow cryogenic wedges have formed between 16 and 12.5 ka. A second wave of cryogenic wedge pseudomorphs seems to have followed, which was ending by about 7 ka. Based on the types of cryogenic wedges and in combination with stratigraphic data for dating, as well as the past Quaternary geological and periglacial landform data, we infer that the mean annual air temperature (MAAT) in this region during the local LPM (30–19 ka) was 7–9°C lower than that at present, and the lower limit of permafrost was lowered to about 2,200–2,500 m a. s. l. During the local LPM, permafrost was extensively and intensively developed on the northeastern QTP, and the continuous permafrost zone extended down to the source area of the Yellow River and the vicinity of the Zoîgé Plateau in the east. The contemporary carbon balance over the Tibetan Plateau is highly uncertain with a ten-fold difference between various estimates. In a warming world, the potential exists for a large carbon release from its permafrost which could compromise China's 2060 carbon-neutral goal. Here, we used a satellite- and inventory-based approach, ecosystem models, and atmospheric inversions to estimate that the carbon sink was 33.12–37.84 TgC yr−1 during 2000–2015. The carbon sink induced by climate change and increasing CO2 levels largely overcompensated for a livestock grazing-induced carbon source of 0.38 TgC yr−1. By 2060, the carbon sink is projected to increase by 38.3–74.5% under moderate to high emissions scenarios, with the enhanced vegetation carbon uptake outweighing the warming-induced permafrost carbon release. The restoration of degraded grassland could sequestrate an additional 9.06 TgC yr−1, leading to a total carbon sink of 57.78–70.52 TgC yr−1. We conclude that the Tibetan Plateau's ecosystems absorbed two-and-a-half times the amount of its cumulative fossil CO2 emissions during 2000–2015 and that their carbon sinks will almost double in strength in the future, helping to achieve China's pledge to become carbon neutral by 2060. Thermokarst terrain is developing at an accelerating pace in the ice‐rich permafrost on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP), China, and the most dramatic of these terrain‐altering thermokarsts is retrogressive thaw slump (RTS). The freeze–thaw erosion (FTE) impacts are sharply increasing on the Plateau due to RTS, especially as a result of the migration of fine sediments in cold climates, these impacts are still not quantified due to the limitation of hydro‐thermal‐mass transport laws in RTS development. Moreover, it is difficult to assess the impact of RTS on the ecology and environment, especially on soil erosion. This study developed a heat–water‐mass transport coupled model of a RTS in the Beiluhe River Region on the QTP, considering the actual topography, water‐ice phase change, latent heat, and surface heat exchange layer. Based on the observed data of ground temperature, unfrozen water content, and heat flux, the coupled model herein is practicable for presenting the geotemperature regime and groundwater flow in the RTS area, thereby quantifying the ice‐rich permafrost thaw and mass wasting. The results presented indicate that: (1) the seepage velocity of the superficial zone (0–1.5 m depth) is two orders of magnitude higher than that of the permafrost table; (2) the mean ice‐rich permafrost thaw volume was 13.4 m2 from 2016 to 2021; and (3) the cumulative mass transport volume was 22 m2 from July 2020 to September 2021. In addition, the relation between the FTE (shown as the migration of sediments) and the amount of ground ice ablation can be fitted by an exponential equation. The China–Russia crude oil pipeline (CRCOP) traverses rivers, forests, and mountains over permafrost regions in northeastern China. Water accumulates beside the pipe embankment, which disturbs the hydrothermal balance of permafrost underlying the pipeline. Ground surface flows along the pipeline erode the pipe embankment, which threatens the CRCOP's operational safety. Additionally, frost heave and thaw settlement can induce differential deformation of the pipes. Therefore, it is necessary to acquire the spatial distribution of water features along the CRCOP, and analyze the various hazard probabilities and their controlling factors. In this paper, information regarding the permafrost type, buried depth of the pipe, soil type, landforms, and vegetation were collected along the CRCOP every 2 km. Ponding and erosive damage caused by surface flows were measured via field investigations and remote sensing images. Two hundred and sixty-four pond sites were extracted from Landsat 8 images, in which the areas of 46.8% of the ponds were larger than 500 m2. Several influential factors related to freeze–thaw hazards and erosive damage were selected and put into a logistic regression model to determine their corresponding risk probabilities. The results reflected the distributions, and forecasted the occurrences, of freeze–thaw hazards and erosive damage. The sections of pipe with the highest risks of freeze–thaw and erosive damage accounted for 2.4% and 6.7%, respectively, of the pipeline. Permafrost type and the position where runoff encounters the pipeline were the dominant influences on the freeze–thaw hazards, while the runoff–pipe position, buried depth of the pipe, and landform types played a dominant role in erosive damage along the CRCOP. Combined with the geographic information system (GIS), field surveys, image interpretation and model calculations are effective methods for assessing the various hazards along the CRCOP in permafrost regions. Rapid permafrost thawing triggered by heat release from the buried warm-oil pipeline would result in the instability of the pipeline, posing a potential risk of an oil spill in permafrost regions. Therefore, how to precisely control the ground temperature to mitigate pipeline foundation permafrost from thawing is of significant importance. Thermosyphon is a widely-accepted and extensively-used countermeasure against permafrost thawing in permafrost engineering. This paper presents 3-year (2015–2018) monitored data of ground temperature and geophysical survey results conducted by electrical resistivity tomography in April 2018, to investigate the thermal stabilizing effect of thermosyphons installed nearby the China-Russia crude oil pipeline (CRCOP) and the influencing factors. Furthermore, numerical simulation tests were conducted to evaluate their long-term cooling applicability and to optimize their layout parameters. Field observations show that the thermosyphons can cool down and even freeze the thawed soil layers around the CRCOP, prohibiting the infiltration of water into the thawing front to some extent and effectively mitigating the rapid thawing of permafrost beneath the pipeline. The performance of the thermosyphons is greatly influenced by the method and time of thermosyphon installation, as well as layout parameters including the number and longitudinal spacing. Two pairs of thermosyphons with a shorter spacing are unable to control the thawing of the underlying permafrost due to the non-anticipated higher oil temperature, the thermal erosion of water ponding, and climate warming. The simulated results indicate that thermosyphons perform well in the first 5 years after installation. Thermosyphon lowers the mean annual temperature of soils surrounding it by about 2 and 1.4 times when the evaporator section length is increased by 50% and the longitudinal spacing is decreased by 0.5 m, respectively. The application of thermosyphons has proven its strength for thermally stabilizing the pipeline foundation permafrost along the CRCOP. • 3-year ground temperature data and geophysical survey results are presented. • Thermosyphon can mitigate the rapid thawing of permafrost beneath the pipeline. • Thermosyphons performs most significantly in the first five years. • Lengthening thermosyphon and decreasing spacings are favorable for the better cooling effect.
