- Abstract
This book starts with the premise that beauty can be an engine of transformation and authentic engagement in an increasingly complex world. It presents an organized picture of highlights from the 13th European Science Education Research Association Conference, ESERA 2019, held in Bologna, Italy. The collection includes contributions that discuss contemporary issues such as climate change, multiculturalism, and the flourishing of new interdisciplinary areas of investigation, including the application of cognitive neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and digital humanities to science education research. It also highlights learners' difficulties engaging with socio-scientific issues in a digital and post-truth era. The volume demonstrates that deepening our understanding is the preferred way to address these challenges and that science education has a key role to play in this effort. In particular, the book advances the argument that the deep and novel character of these challenges requires a collective search for new narratives and languages, an expanding knowledge base and new theoretical perspectives and methods of research. The book provides a contemporary picture of science education research and looks to the theoretical and practical societal challenges of the future.

- Abstract
This guide draws on English-related errors from around 6000 papers written by non-native authors, 500 abstracts written by PhD students, and over 2000 hours of teaching researchers how to write and present research papers. This new edition has chapters on exploiting AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Translate, and Reverso, for generating, paraphrasing, translating and correcting texts written in English. It also deals with contemporary issues such as the use of gender pronouns. Due to its focus on the specific errors that repeatedly appear in papers written by non-native authors, this manual is an ideal study guide for use in universities and research institutes. Such errors are related to the usage of articles, countable vs. uncountable nouns, tenses, modal verbs, active vs. passive form, relative clauses, infinitive vs. "-ing" form, the genitive, link words, quantifiers, word order, prepositions, acronyms, abbreviations, numbers and measurements, punctuation, and spelling.

- Abstract
The epidemic of COVID-19 has disrupted education in over 150 nations and harmed 1.6 billion children. As a result, a number of nations have introduced some type of remote learning employing technology and students were encouraged to engage in self-determined learning. Many Educational Institutions that previously resisted changing their traditional pedagogical method were forced to use online teaching and learning exclusively. Internet-educated kids who have never encountered this issue are unfamiliar with it. As a result, they are confronted with a number of psychological issues and are negatively impacting the health, social, and material well-being of children globally, with the poorest children, such as homeless children and children in detention, being the hardest hit. As a result, the editors came to the conclusion that it would be beneficial to issue a call for papers in order to discuss the difficulties and opportunities associated with the practise of heutagogy from the psychological and technological vantage points indicated in the title. - Abstract
"Skill is laying the foundation for a brighter India. As John Ruskin puts it, "Skill is the unified force of experience, intellect, and passion in their operation." "Nation Building" is a herculean task that involves the government of the land, private and public institutions, industries, organisations, and every citizen there, holding accountability of its development inch by inch. India faces enormous problems in practically every aspect of national life as a young democratic nation with a multilingual, multicultural, and multiethnic population. Poverty, illiteracy, unequal and underdeveloped growth of diverse segments of the country, and insufficient infrastructure in educational and training institutions are all impeding the country's development. The insufficiently skilled workforce is unable to assume greater responsibilities in the development of a better nation. In India, there is now a scarcity of highly trained and skilled educators. Both in India and overseas, there is a considerable need for all levels of skilled labour, including semiskilled, skilled, highly skilled, and highly skilled with specialisation. An estimated 65 percent of workers in India are aged 15 to 59, with an average age of 29 compared to China and other OECD countries. Approximately 335 million people are currently employed in the United States today. They are largely uneducated and have little or no experience. Approximately 59 million of the 70 million predicted to enter the market will be in the 15 to 30 age category. For the development of our country, reskilling, up-skilling, and conceiving and generating ways and means for national and international labour mobility, as well as mitigating the low contribution of women labour force, are all critical. Our youth will be more competent if we place a higher value on skill development. To address all of the concerns of globalisation, knowledge explosion and distribution, and skill development competition, the Indian government has launched a number of initiatives, including Skill India, Digital India, Startup India, and Make in India. Many groups are attempting to improve people's skills. (a) Directorate General of Training (DGT), (b) National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), (c) Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), (d) National Skill Development Agency (NSDA), (e) National Skill Development Fund (NSDF), (f) National Institute of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development, g) Skill Sector Councils, (h) ICT Academy, and respective State Skill Development Corporations. To impart and upgrade abilities, numerous organisations and universities offer a variety of certificate, diploma, and postgraduate diploma courses. TNOU also provides a variety of skill-based courses. The aspiration and ambition of the Indian Government is to make India the world's "Skill Capital." We/the editors consider it a privilege to have compiled this book titled "Nation Building through Skill Development," which contains contributions on a wide range of subtopics on various elements of skill development explored by a diverse group of authors from around the world. Choosing the chapters was, indeed, a difficult task. Original papers with less than 10% plagiarism were chosen for publication. For the publication of this book, forty-one essays were chosen. We/the editors would want to express our gratitude to everyone who submitted a chapter. The contributions that were not included in this publication are in no way considered rejects. We/the editors express our gratitude to Prof. Dr. K. Parthasarathy, Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Open University, for entrusting us with this task. We/the editors would also want to express our gratitude to all those kind individuals who have worked tirelessly to bring this book in black and white. Buckland, Michael and Dye, Charles M.
- Abstract
This paper presents a history of electronic distance education in the United States. Three broad categories of delivery systems are described: (1) over-the-air open circuit systems such as VHF-UHF stations, microwave, instructional television fixed service (ITFS), communications satellites, and educational radio and television; (2) through-the-wire, or closed circuit systems such as intraschool closed-circuit television, cable television, telephone applications, and campus information networks; and (3) direct physical delivery, including hand-carried videotapes, cassettes, discs, mail, videotape recordings, and library materials. Discussion focuses primarily on over-the-air and through-the-wire delivery systems, with emphasis on relevant U.S. government legislation. The history begins in 1844 with the telegraph, continues through the telegraph printer, the first transatlantic telegraph cable (1869), telephones (1876), the phonograph (1877), and through 1896 with the first patent for radio obtained by Marconi. Twentieth century advancements in communications technology are discussed in detail. Federal legislation noted includes the 1912 and 1927 Radio Acts, the development of the Federal Radio Commission, predecessor of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and other standards adopted first for the regulation of the radio spectrum and then for the regulation of the television spectrum. Also included in this discussion are the development of national organizations and agencies, convened in response to special interest groups and to specific uses for the media. Two chronologies are provided: the development and use of technology from 1812 to 1990, and legislation and philanthropy in distance education from 1910 to 1984. (25 references) (DB)

Summary: Originally published in 1995, this volume is the direct result of a conference in which a number of leading researchers from the fields of artificial intelligence and biology gathered to examine whether there was any ground to assume that a new AI paradigm was forming itself and what the essential ingredients of this new paradigm were. A great deal of scepsis is justified when researchers, particularly in the cognitive sciences, talk about a new paradigm. Shifts in paradigm mean not only new ideas but also shifts in what constitutes good problems, what counts as a result, the experimental practice to validate results, and the technological tools needed to do research. Due to the complexity of the subject matter, paradigms abound in the cognitive sciences -- connectionism being the most prominent newcomer in the mid-1980s. This workshop group was brought together in order to clarify the common ground, see what had been achieved so far, and examine in which way the research could move further. This volume is a reflection of this important meeting. It contains contributions which were distributed before the workshop but then substantially broadened and revised to reflect the workshop discussions and more recent technical work. Written in polemic form, sometimes criticizing the work done thus far within the new paradigm, this collection includes research program descriptions, technical contributions, and position papers.

- Abstract
This paper reviews the state-of-the-art in generative computer-assisted instruction and artificial intelligence. It divides relevant research into three areas of instructional modeling: models of the subject matter; models of the learner's state of knowledge; and models of teaching strategies. Within these areas, work sponsored by Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) plays a prominent role in theoretical advances. ARPA sponsored research has concentrated both on the development of instructional systems teaching subjects like programming and problem solving, and on research basic to the improvement of adaptive instructional systems in general. The review concludes that as a CAI system becomes more responsive to natural language input, the number of extraneous skills a student must develop in order to interact with the program decreases. Also, providing an author with the opportunity to interact with the computer in natural language lessens the time required to create CAI materials, as well as the constraints imposed on those materials by working in a programming language. Artificial intelligence ,Computational intelligence - Abstract
Summary: This book is an edited collection of chapters based on the papers presented at the conference "Beyond AI: Artificial Dreams" held in Pilsen in November 2012. The aim of the conference was to question deep-rooted ideas of artificial intelligence and cast critical reflection on methods standing at its foundations. Artificial Dreams epitomize our controversial quest for non-biological intelligence, and therefore the contributors of this book tried to fully exploit such a controversy in their respective chapters, which resulted in an interdisciplinary dialogue between experts from engineering, natural sciences and humanities. While pursuing the Artificial Dreams, it has become clear that it is still more and more difficult to draw a clear divide between human and machine. And therefore this book tries to portrait such an image of what lies beyond artificial intelligence: we can see the disappearing human-machine divide, a very important phenomenon of nowadays technological society, the phenomenon which is often uncritically praised, or hypocritically condemned. And so this phenomenon found its place in the subtitle of the whole volume as well as in the title of the chapter of Kevin Warwick, one of the keynote speakers at "Beyond AI: Artificial Dreams". .

King, Margaret and King, Margaret
- Abstract
The first section of this paper deals with the attempts within the framework of transformational grammar to make semantics a systematic part of linguistic description, and outlines the characteristics of the generative semantics position. The second section takes a critical look at generative semantics in its later manifestations, and makes a case against this position on the basis of its treatment of presupposition. The attempt to include presupposition, in a broad sense, in a grammatical system leads to a situation where grammar breaks down. It is possible to redefine grammar in such a way that it can correct tentative assumptions, but this would be the definition of a design criterion for an artificial intelligence (AI) system, in which the aim is to understand the sentence, and grammaticality is at best of secondary importance. A general conclusion is that the demand that grammar should take into account not only well-formedness and semantic acceptability but also all possible aspects of the context of use of a sentence renders the production of a grammar in a normal sense impossible; but it does provide an intelligible and coherent basis for work within the paradigm of artificial intelligence. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) presents a bibliography of more than 350 reports, theses, and papers from its artificial intelligence laboratory. Title, author, and identification number are given for all items, and most also have a date and contract number. Some items are no longer available, and others may be obtained from National Technical Information Service. For those available from MIT, a price is listed. Many items, particularly the more recent ones, are annotated. The scope of the bibliography includes aspects of computer uses and routines such as programing languages, games, mathematical functions, language recognition, music theory, pattern recognition, computer assisted instruction, artificial intelligence, tracking, time sharing, robots, and computational linguistics.
