Climbing gyms aim to continuously improve their offerings and make the best use of their infrastructure to provide a unique experience for their clients, the climbers. One approach to achieve this goal is to track and analyze climbing sessions from the beginning of the ascent until the climber’s descent. Detecting the climber’s descent is crucial because it indicates when the ascent has ended. This paper discusses an approach that preserves climber privacy (e.g., not using cameras) while considering the convenience of climbers and the costs to the gyms. To this aim, a hardware prototype has been developed to collect data using accelerometer sensors attached to a piece of climbing equipment mounted on the wall, called a quickdraw, which connects the climbing rope to the bolt anchors. The sensors are configured to be energy-efficient, making them practical in terms of expenses and time required for replacement when used in large quantities in a climbing gym. This paper describes the hardware specifications, studies data measured by the sensors in ultra-low power mode, detects sensors’ orientation patterns during descent on different routes, and develops a supervised approach to identify lowering. Additionally, the study emphasizes the benefits of multidisciplinary feature engineering, combining domain-specific knowledge with machine learning to enhance performance and simplify implementation.

With the maturity of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, applications of AI in edge computing will greatly promote the development of industrial technology. However, the existing studies on the edge computing framework for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) still face several challenges, such as deep hardware and software coupling, diverse protocols, difficult deployment of AI models, insufficient computing capabilities of edge devices, and sensitivity to delay and energy consumption. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a software-defined AI-oriented three-layer IIoT edge computing framework and presents the design and implementation of an AI-oriented edge computing system, aiming to support device access, enable the acceptance and deployment of AI models from the cloud, and allow the whole process from data acquisition to model training to be completed at the edge. In addition, this paper proposes a time series-based method for device selection and computation offloading in the federated learning process, which selectively offloads the tasks of inefficient nodes to the edge computing center to reduce the training delay and energy consumption. Finally, experiments carried out to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are reported. The model training time with the proposed method is generally 30% to 50% less than that with the random device selection method, and the training energy consumption under the proposed method is generally 35% to 55% less.

Physical aggression is a serious and widespread problem in society, affecting people worldwide. It impacts nearly every aspect of life. While some studies explore the root causes of violent behavior, others focus on urban planning in high-crime areas. Real-time violence detection, powered by artificial intelligence, offers a direct and efficient solution, reducing the need for extensive human supervision and saving lives. This paper is a continuation of a systematic mapping study and its objective is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date review of AI-based video violence detection, specifically in physical assaults. Regarding violence detection, the following have been grouped and categorized from the review of the selected papers: 21 challenges that remain to be solved, 28 datasets that have been created in recent years, 21 keyframe extraction methods, 16 types of algorithm inputs, as well as a wide variety of algorithm combinations and their corresponding accuracy results. Given the lack of recent reviews dealing with the detection of violence in video, this study is considered necessary and relevant.

In today’s world, a significant amount of global energy is used in buildings. Unfortunately, a lot of this energy is wasted, because electrical appliances are not used properly or efficiently. One way to reduce this waste is by detecting, learning, and predicting when people are present in buildings. To do this, buildings need to become “smart” and “cognitive” and use modern technologies to sense when and how people are occupying the buildings. By leveraging this information, buildings can make smart decisions based on recently developed methods. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that have been designed and used for the monitoring of indoor environmental conditions within buildings. Using these technologies is crucial to gathering data about the indoor environment and determining the number and presence of occupants. Furthermore, this paper critically examines both the strengths and limitations of each technology in predicting occupant behavior. In addition, it explores different methods for processing these data and making future occupancy predictions. Moreover, we highlight some challenges, such as determining the optimal number and location of sensors and radars, and provide a detailed explanation and insights into these challenges. Furthermore, the paper explores possible future directions, including the security of occupants’ data and the promotion of energy-efficient practices such as localizing occupants and monitoring their activities within a building. With respect to other survey works on similar topics, our work aims to both cover recent sensory approaches and review methods used in the literature for estimating occupancy.

This paper addresses issues concerning biometric authentication based on handwritten signatures. Our research aimed to check whether a handwritten signature acquired with a mobile device can effectively verify a user’s identity. We present a novel online signature verification method using coordinates of points and pressure values at each point collected with a mobile device. Convolutional neural networks are used for signature verification. In this paper, three neural network models are investigated, i.e., two self-made light SigNet and SigNetExt models and the VGG-16 model commonly used in image processing. The convolutional neural networks aim to determine whether the acquired signature sample matches the class declared by the signer. Thus, the scenario of closed set verification is performed. The effectiveness of our method was tested on signatures acquired with mobile phones. We used the subset of the multimodal database, MobiBits, that was captured using a custom-made application and consists of samples acquired from 53 people of diverse ages. The experimental results on accurate data demonstrate that developed architectures of deep neural networks can be successfully used for online handwritten signature verification. We achieved an equal error rate (EER) of 0.63% for random forgeries and 6.66% for skilled forgeries.

Aiming at the problems of target detection models in traffic scenarios including a large number of parameters, heavy computational burden, and high application cost, this paper introduces an enhanced lightweight real-time detection algorithm, which exhibits higher detection speed and accuracy for vehicle detection. This paper considers the YOLOv7 algorithm as the benchmark model, designs a lightweight backbone network, and uses the MobileNetV3 lightweight network to extract target features. Inspired by the structure of SPPF, the spatial pyramid pooling module is reconfigured by incorporating GSConv, and a lightweight SPPFCSPC-GS module is designed, aiming to minimize the quantity of model parameters and enhance the training speed even further. Furthermore, the CA mechanism is integrated to enhance the feature extraction capability of the model. Finally, the MPDIoU loss function is utilized to optimize the model’s training process. Experiments showcase that the refined YOLOv7 algorithm can achieve 98.2% mAP on the BIT-Vehicle dataset with 52.8% fewer model parameters than the original model and a 35.2% improvement in FPS. The enhanced model adeptly strikes a finer equilibrium between velocity and precision, providing favorable conditions for embedding the model into mobile devices.

In the ever-evolving landscape of modern agriculture, the integration of advanced technologies has become indispensable for optimizing crop management and ensuring sustainable food production. This paper presents the development and implementation of a real-time AI-assisted push-broom hyperspectral system for plant identification. The push-broom hyperspectral technique, coupled with artificial intelligence, offers unprecedented detail and accuracy in crop monitoring. This paper details the design and construction of the spectrometer, including optical assembly and system integration. The real-time acquisition and classification system, utilizing an embedded computing solution, is also described. The calibration and resolution analysis demonstrates the accuracy of the system in capturing spectral data. As a test, the system was applied to the classification of plant leaves. The AI algorithm based on neural networks allows for the continuous analysis of hyperspectral data relative up to 720 ground positions at 50 fps.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a computer vision process aimed at detecting and classifying human emotional expressions. FER systems are currently used in a vast range of applications from areas such as education, healthcare, or public safety; therefore, detection and recognition accuracies are very important. Similar to any computer vision task based on image analyses, FER solutions are also suitable for integration with artificial intelligence solutions represented by different neural network varieties, especially deep neural networks that have shown great potential in the last years due to their feature extraction capabilities and computational efficiency over large datasets. In this context, this paper reviews the latest developments in the FER area, with a focus on recent neural network models that implement specific facial image analysis algorithms to detect and recognize facial emotions. This paper’s scope is to present from historical and conceptual perspectives the evolution of the neural network architectures that proved significant results in the FER area. This paper endorses convolutional neural network (CNN)-based architectures against other neural network architectures, such as recurrent neural networks or generative adversarial networks, highlighting the key elements and performance of each architecture, and the advantages and limitations of the proposed models in the analyzed papers. Additionally, this paper presents the available datasets that are currently used for emotion recognition from facial expressions and micro-expressions. The usage of FER systems is also highlighted in various domains such as healthcare, education, security, or social IoT. Finally, open issues and future possible developments in the FER area are identified.

In this paper, the authors investigate the possibility of applying artificial intelligence algorithms to the outputs of a low-cost Kalman filter-based navigation solution in order to achieve performance similar to that of high-end MEMS inertial sensors. To further improve the results of the prototype and simultaneously lighten filter requirements, different AI models are compared in this paper to determine their performance in terms of complexity and accuracy. By overcoming some known limitations (e.g., sensitivity on the dimension of input data from inertial sensors) and starting from Kalman filter applications (whose raw noise parameter estimates were obtained from a simple analysis of sensor specifications), such a solution presents an intermediate behavior compared to the current state of the art. It allows the exploitation of the power of AI models. Different Neural Network models have been taken into account and compared in terms of measurement accuracy and a number of model parameters; in particular, Dense, 1-Dimension Convolutional, and Long Short Term Memory Neural networks. As can be excepted, the higher the NN complexity, the higher the measurement accuracy; the models’ performance has been assessed by means of the root-mean-square error (RMSE) between the target and predicted values of all the navigation parameters.

Nowadays, artificial intelligence is used everywhere in the world and is becoming a key factor for innovation and progress in many areas of human life. From medicine to industry to consumer electronics, its influence is ever-expanding and permeates all aspects of our modern society. This article presents the use of artificial intelligence (prediction) for the control of three motors used for effector control in a spherical parallel kinematic structure of a designed device. The kinematic model used was the “Agile eye” which can achieve high dynamics and has three degrees of freedom. A prototype of this device was designed and built, on which experiments were carried out in the framework of motor control. As the prototype was created through the means of the available equipment (3D printing and lathe), the clearances of the kinematic mechanism were made and then calibrated through prediction. The paper also presents a method for motor control calibration. On the one hand, using AI is an efficient way to achieve higher precision in positioning the optical axis of the effector. On the other hand, such calibration would be rendered unnecessary if the clearances and inaccuracies in the mechanism could be eliminated mechanically. The device was designed with imperfections such as clearances in mind so the effectiveness of the calibration could be tested and evaluated. The resulting control of the achieved movements of the axis of the device (effector) took place when obtaining the exact location of the tracked point. There are several methods for controlling the motors of mechatronic devices (e.g., Matlab-Simscape). This paper presents an experiment performed to verify the possibility of controlling the kinematic mechanism through neural networks and eliminating inaccuracies caused by imprecisely produced mechanical parts.

This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in brain–computer interfaces (BCI). It begins by providing an introduction to BCIs, describing their main operation principles and most widely used platforms. The paper then examines the various components of a BCI system, such as hardware, software, and signal processing algorithms. Finally, it looks at current trends in research related to BCI use for medical, educational, and other purposes, as well as potential future applications of this technology. The paper concludes by highlighting some key challenges that still need to be addressed before widespread adoption can occur. By presenting an up-to-date assessment of the state-of-the-art in BCI technology, this paper will provide valuable insight into where this field is heading in terms of progress and innovation.

Recent studies indicate that food demand will increase by 35–56% over the period 2010–2050 due to population increase, economic development, and urbanization. Greenhouse systems allow for the sustainable intensification of food production with demonstrated high crop production per cultivation area. Breakthroughs in resource-efficient fresh food production merging horticultural and AI expertise take place with the international competition “Autonomous Greenhouse Challenge”. This paper describes and analyzes the results of the third edition of this competition. The competition’s goal is the realization of the highest net profit in fully autonomous lettuce production. Two cultivation cycles were conducted in six high-tech greenhouse compartments with operational greenhouse decision-making realized at a distance and individually by algorithms of international participating teams. Algorithms were developed based on time series sensor data of the greenhouse climate and crop images. High crop yield and quality, short growing cycles, and low use of resources such as energy for heating, electricity for artificial light, and CO2 were decisive in realizing the competition’s goal. The results highlight the importance of plant spacing and the moment of harvest decisions in promoting high crop growth rates while optimizing greenhouse occupation and resource use. In this paper, images taken with depth cameras (RealSense) for each greenhouse were used by computer vision algorithms (Deepabv3+ implemented in detectron2 v0.6) in deciding optimum plant spacing and the moment of harvest. The resulting plant height and coverage could be accurately estimated with an R2 of 0.976, and a mIoU of 98.2, respectively. These two traits were used to develop a light loss and harvest indicator to support remote decision-making. The light loss indicator could be used as a decision tool for timely spacing. Several traits were combined for the harvest indicator, ultimately resulting in a fresh weight estimation with a mean absolute error of 22 g. The proposed non-invasively estimated indicators presented in this article are promising traits to be used towards full autonomation of a dynamic commercial lettuce growing environment. Computer vision algorithms act as a catalyst in remote and non-invasive sensing of crop parameters, decisive for automated, objective, standardized, and data-driven decision making. However, spectral indexes describing lettuces growth and larger datasets than the currently accessible are crucial to address existing shortcomings between academic and industrial production systems that have been encountered in this work.

Network security situation awareness (NSSA) is an integral part of cybersecurity defense, and it is essential for cybersecurity managers to respond to increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. Different from traditional security measures, NSSA can identify the behavior of various activities in the network and conduct intent understanding and impact assessment from a macro perspective so as to provide reasonable decision support, predicting the development trend of network security. It is a means to analyze the network security quantitatively. Although NSSA has received extensive attention and exploration, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews of the related technologies. This paper presents a state-of-the-art study on NSSA that can help bridge the current research status and future large-scale application. First, the paper provides a concise introduction to NSSA, highlighting its development process. Then, the paper focuses on the research progress of key technologies in recent years. We further discuss the classic use cases of NSSA. Finally, the survey details various challenges and potential research directions related to NSSA.

The wave of modernization around us has put the automotive industry on the brink of a paradigm shift. Leveraging the ever-evolving technologies, vehicles are steadily transitioning towards automated driving to constitute an integral part of the intelligent transportation system (ITS). The term autonomous vehicle has become ubiquitous in our lives, owing to the extensive research and development that frequently make headlines. Nonetheless, the flourishing of AVs hinges on many factors due to the extremely stringent demands for safety, security, and reliability. Cutting-edge technologies play critical roles in tackling complicated issues. Assimilating trailblazing technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), edge intelligence (EI), 5G, and Blockchain into the AV architecture will unlock the potential of an efficient and sustainable transportation system. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art in the literature on the impact and implementation of the aforementioned technologies into AV architectures, along with the challenges faced by each of them. We also provide insights into the technological offshoots concerning their seamless integration to fulfill the requirements of AVs. Finally, the paper sheds light on future research directions and opportunities that will spur further developments. Exploring the integration of key enabling technologies in a single work will serve as a valuable reference for the community interested in the relevant issues surrounding AV research.

Imaging is one of the main tools of modern astronomy—many images are collected each day, and they must be processed. Processing such a large amount of images can be complex, time-consuming, and may require advanced tools. One of the techniques that may be employed is artificial intelligence (AI)-based image detection and classification. In this paper, the research is focused on developing such a system for the problem of the Magellan dataset, which contains 134 satellite images of Venus’s surface with individual volcanoes marked with circular labels. Volcanoes are classified into four classes depending on their features. In this paper, the authors apply the You-Only-Look-Once (YOLO) algorithm, which is based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). To apply this technique, the original labels are first converted into a suitable YOLO format. Then, due to the relatively small number of images in the dataset, deterministic augmentation techniques are applied. Hyperparameters of the YOLO network are tuned to achieve the best results, which are evaluated as mean average precision (mAP@0.5) for localization accuracy and F1 score for classification accuracy. The experimental results using cross-vallidation indicate that the proposed method achieved 0.835 mAP@0.5 and 0.826 F1 scores, respectively.

This paper presents the findings of detailed and comprehensive technical literature aimed at identifying the current and future research challenges of tactical autonomy. It discusses in great detail the current state-of-the-art powerful artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and robot technologies, and their potential for developing safe and robust autonomous systems in the context of future military and defense applications. Additionally, we discuss some of the technical and operational critical challenges that arise when attempting to practically build fully autonomous systems for advanced military and defense applications. Our paper provides the state-of-the-art advanced AI methods available for tactical autonomy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that addresses the important current trends, strategies, critical challenges, tactical complexities, and future research directions of tactical autonomy. We believe this work will greatly interest researchers and scientists from academia and the industry working in the field of robotics and the autonomous systems community. We hope this work encourages researchers across multiple disciplines of AI to explore the broader tactical autonomy domain. We also hope that our work serves as an essential step toward designing advanced AI and ML models with practical implications for real-world military and defense settings.

With the rapid growth in the data and processing over the cloud, it has become easier to access those data. On the other hand, it poses many technical and security challenges to the users of those provisions. Fog computing makes these technical issues manageable to some extent. Fog computing is one of the promising solutions for handling the big data produced by the IoT, which are often security-critical and time-sensitive. Massive IoT data analytics by a fog computing structure is emerging and requires extensive research for more proficient knowledge and smart decisions. Though an advancement in big data analytics is taking place, it does not consider fog data analytics. However, there are many challenges, including heterogeneity, security, accessibility, resource sharing, network communication overhead, the real-time data processing of complex data, etc. This paper explores various research challenges and their solution using the next-generation fog data analytics and IoT networks. We also performed an experimental analysis based on fog computing and cloud architecture. The result shows that fog computing outperforms the cloud in terms of network utilization and latency. Finally, the paper is concluded with future trends.

This paper merges new research topics in Industry 5.0 using the Business Process Modeling and Notation (BPMN) approach able to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) in production processes. The goal is to provide an innovative approach to model production management in industry, adopting a new “proof of concept” of advanced Process Mining (PM) automatizing decisions and optimizing machine setting and maintenance interventions. Advanced electronic sensing and actuation systems, integrating supervised and unsupervised AI algorithms, are embedded in the PM model as theoretical process workflows suggested by a Decision Support System (DSS) engine enabling an intelligent decision-making procedure. The paper discusses, as examples, two theoretical models applied to specific industry sectors, such as food processing and energy production. The proposed work provides important elements of engineering management related to the digitalization of production process matching with automated control systems setting production parameters, thus enabling the self-adapting of product quality supervision and production efficiency in modern industrial systems.

Medical images play an important role in medical diagnosis and treatment. Oncologists analyze images to determine the different characteristics of deadly diseases, plan the therapy, and observe the evolution of the disease. The objective of this paper is to propose a method for the detection of brain tumors. Brain tumors are identified from Magnetic Resonance (MR) images by performing suitable segmentation procedures. The latest technical literature concerning radiographic images of the brain shows that deep learning methods can be implemented to extract specific features of brain tumors, aiding clinical diagnosis. For this reason, most data scientists and AI researchers work on Machine Learning methods for designing automatic screening procedures. Indeed, an automated method would result in quicker segmentation findings, providing a robust output with respect to possible differences in data sources, mostly due to different procedures in data recording and storing, resulting in a more consistent identification of brain tumors. To improve the performance of the segmentation procedure, new architectures are proposed and tested in this paper. We propose deep neural networks for the detection of brain tumors, trained on the MRI scans of patients’ brains. The proposed architectures are based on convolutional neural networks and inception modules for brain tumor segmentation. A comparison of these proposed architectures with the baseline reference ones shows very interesting results. MI-Unet showed a performance increase in comparison to baseline Unet architecture by 7.5% in dice score, 23.91% insensitivity, and 7.09% in specificity. Depth-wise separable MI-Unet showed a performance increase by 10.83% in dice score, 2.97% in sensitivity, and 12.72% in specificity as compared to the baseline Unet architecture. Hybrid Unet architecture achieved performance improvement of 9.71% in dice score, 3.56% in sensitivity, and 12.6% in specificity. Whereas the depth-wise separable hybrid Unet architecture outperformed the baseline architecture by 15.45% in dice score, 20.56% in sensitivity, and 12.22% in specificity.

This paper proposes a concept of Digital Stereotypes, observed during research on quantitative overrepresentation of one class over others, and its impact on the results of the training of Deep Learning models. The real-life observed data classes are rarely of the same size, and the intuition of presenting multiple examples of one class and then showing a few counterexamples may be very misleading in multimodal classification. Deep Learning models, when taught with overrepresentation, may produce incorrect inferring results, similar to stereotypes. The generic idea of stereotypes seems to be helpful for categorisation from the training point of view, but it has a negative influence on the inferring result. Authors evaluate a large dataset in various scenarios: overrepresentation of one or two classes, underrepresentation of some classes, and same-size (trimmed) classes. The presented research can be applied to any multiclassification applications, but it may be especially important in AI, where the classification, uncertainty and building new knowledge overlap. This paper presents specific ’decreases in accuracy’ observed within multiclassification of unleveled datasets. The ’decreases in accuracy’, named by the authors ’stereotypes’, can also bring an inspiring insight into other fields and applications, not only multimodal sentiment analysis.

Chip pad inspection is of great practical importance for chip alignment inspection and correction. It is one of the key technologies for automated chip inspection in semiconductor manufacturing. When applying deep learning methods for chip pad inspection, the main problem to be solved is how to ensure the accuracy of small target pad detection and, at the same time, achieve a lightweight inspection model. The attention mechanism is widely used to improve the accuracy of small target detection by finding the attention region of the network. However, conventional attention mechanisms capture feature information locally, which makes it difficult to effectively improve the detection efficiency of small targets from complex backgrounds in target detection tasks. In this paper, an OCAM (Object Convolution Attention Module) attention module is proposed to build long-range dependencies between channel features and position features by constructing feature contextual relationships to enhance the correlation between features. By adding the OCAM attention module to the feature extraction layer of the YOLOv5 network, the detection performance of chip pads is effectively improved. In addition, a design guideline for the attention layer is proposed in the paper. The attention layer is adjusted by network scaling to avoid network characterization bottlenecks, balance network parameters, and network detection performance, and reduce the hardware device requirements for the improved YOLOv5 network in practical scenarios. Extensive experiments on chip pad datasets, VOC datasets, and COCO datasets show that the approach in this paper is more general and superior to several state-of-the-art methods.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a sharp increase in the interest in artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool supporting the work of doctors in difficult conditions and providing early detection of the implications of the disease. Recent studies have shown that AI has been successfully applied in the healthcare sector. The objective of this paper is to perform a systematic review to summarize the electroencephalogram (EEG) findings in patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and databases and tools used in artificial intelligence algorithms, supporting the diagnosis and correlation between lung disease and brain damage, and lung damage. Available search tools containing scientific publications, such as PubMed and Google Scholar, were comprehensively evaluated and searched with open databases and tools used in AI algorithms. This work aimed to collect papers from the period of January 2019–May 2022 including in their resources the database from which data necessary for further development of algorithms supporting the diagnosis of the respiratory system can be downloaded and the correlation between lung disease and brain damage can be evaluated. The 10 articles which show the most interesting AI algorithms, trained by using open databases and associated with lung diseases, were included for review with 12 articles related to EEGs, which have/or may be related with lung diseases.

Pork accounts for an important proportion of livestock products. For pig farming, a lot of manpower, material resources and time are required to monitor pig health and welfare. As the number of pigs in farming increases, the continued use of traditional monitoring methods may cause stress and harm to pigs and farmers and affect pig health and welfare as well as farming economic output. In addition, the application of artificial intelligence has become a core part of smart pig farming. The precision pig farming system uses sensors such as cameras and radio frequency identification to monitor biometric information such as pig sound and pig behavior in real-time and convert them into key indicators of pig health and welfare. By analyzing the key indicators, problems in pig health and welfare can be detected early, and timely intervention and treatment can be provided, which helps to improve the production and economic efficiency of pig farming. This paper studies more than 150 papers on precision pig farming and summarizes and evaluates the application of artificial intelligence technologies to pig detection, tracking, behavior recognition and sound recognition. Finally, we summarize and discuss the opportunities and challenges of precision pig farming.

Since the 20th century, a rapid process of motorization has begun. The main goal of researchers, engineers and technology companies is to increase the safety and optimality of the movement of vehicles, as well as to reduce the environmental damage caused by the automotive industry. The difficulty of managing traffic flows is that cars are driven by a person and their behavior, even in similar situations, is different and difficult to predict. To solve this problem, ground-based unmanned vehicles are increasingly being developed and implemented; however, like any other intelligent system, it is necessary to train different road scenarios. Currently, an engineer is driving an unmanned vehicle for training and thousands of kilometers are being driven for training. Of course, this approach to training unmanned vehicles is very long, and it is impossible to reproduce all the scenarios that can be found in real operations on a real road. Based on this, we offer a simulator of a realistic urban environment which allows you to reduce the training time and allows you to generate all kinds of events. To implement such a simulator, it is necessary to develop a method that would allow recreating a realistic world in one passage with cameras (monocular) installed on board the vehicle. Based on this, the purpose of this work is to develop an intelligent vehicle recognition system using convolutional neural networks, which allows you to create mesh objects for further placement in the simulator. It is important to note that the resulting objects should be optimal in size so as not to overload the system, since a large number of road infrastructure objects are stored there. Also, neural complexity should not be excessive. In this paper, the general concept and classification of convolutional neural networks are given, which allow solving the problem of recognizing 3D objects in images. Based on the analysis, the existing neural network architectures do not solve the problems mentioned above. In this connection, the authors first of all carried out the design of the system according to the methodology of modeling business processes, and also modified and developed the architecture of the neural network, which allows classifying objects with sufficient accuracy, obtaining optimized mesh objects and reducing computational complexity. The methods proposed in this paper are used in a simulator of a realistic urban environment, which reduces the time and computational costs when training unmanned transport systems.

Background: Industry 4.0 technologies have been widely used in the railway industry, focusing mainly on maintenance and control tasks necessary in the railway infrastructure. Given the great potential that these technologies offer, the scientific community has come to use them in varied ways to solve a wide range of problems such as train failures, train station security, rail system control and communication in hard-to-reach areas, among others. For this reason, this paper aims to answer the following research questions: what are the main issues in the railway transport industry, what are the technologic strategies that are currently being used to solve these issues and what are the technologies from industry 4.0 that are used in the railway transport industry to solve the aforementioned issues? Methods: This study adopts a systematic literature review approach. We searched the Science Direct and Web of Science database inception from January 2017 to November 2021. Studies published in conferences or journals written in English or Spanish were included for initial process evaluation. The initial included papers were analyzed by authors and selected based on whether they helped answer the proposed research questions or not. Results: Of the recovered 515 articles, 109 were eligible, from which we could identify three main application domains in the railway industry: monitoring, decision and planification techniques, and communication and security. Regarding industry 4.0 technologies, we identified 9 different technologies applied in reviewed studies: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Big Data, Cybersecurity, Modelling and Simulation, Smart Decision Support Systems (SDSS), Computer Vision and Virtual Reality (VR). This study is, to our knowledge, one of the first to show how industry 4.0 technologies are currently being used to tackle railway industry problems and current application trends in the scientific community, which is highly useful for the development of future studies and more advanced solutions. Our review aimed to assess the current state and quality of publicly available datasets used for automated affect and emotion recognition (AAER) with artificial intelligence (AI), and emphasising cardiovascular (CV) signals. The quality of such datasets is essential to create replicable systems for future work to grow. We investigated nine sources up to 31 August 2020, using a developed search strategy, including studies considering the use of AI in AAER based on CV signals. Two independent reviewers performed the screening of identified records, full-text assessment, data extraction, and credibility. All discrepancies were resolved by discussion. We descriptively synthesised the results and assessed their credibility. The protocol was registered on the Open Science Framework (OSF) platform. Eighteen records out of 195 were selected from 4649 records, focusing on datasets containing CV signals for AAER. Included papers analysed and shared data of 812 participants aged 17 to 47. Electrocardiography was the most explored signal (83.33% of datasets). Authors utilised video stimulation most frequently (52.38% of experiments). Despite these results, much information was not reported by researchers. The quality of the analysed papers was mainly low. Researchers in the field should concentrate more on methodology.

In recent years, greenhouse-based precision agriculture (PA) has been strengthened by utilization of Internet of Things applications and low-power wide area network communication. The advancements in multidisciplinary technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) have created opportunities to assist farmers further in detecting disease and poor nutrition of plants. Neural networks and other AI techniques need an initial set of measurement campaigns along with extensive datasets as a training set to baseline and evolve different applications. This paper presents LoRaWAN-based greenhouse monitoring datasets over a period of nine months. The dataset has both the network and sensing information from multiple sensor nodes for tomato crops in two different greenhouse environments. The goal is to provide the research community with a dataset to evaluate performance of LoRaWAN inside a greenhouse and develop more efficient PA monitoring techniques. In this paper, we carried out an exploratory data analysis to infer crop growth by analyzing just the LoRaWAN signals and without inclusion of any extra hardware. This work uses a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network to predict the weekly plant growth, trained using RSSI value from sensor data and manual measurement of plant height from the greenhouse. We developed this proof of concept of joint communication and sensing by using generated dataset from the “Proefcentrum Hoogstraten” greenhouse in Belgium. Results for the proposed method yield a root mean square error of 10% in detecting the average plant height inside a greenhouse. In future, we can use this concept of landscape sensing for different supplementary use-cases and to develop optimized methods.

This paper considers the use of a machine learning system for the reconstruction and recognition of distorted or damaged patterns, in particular, images of faces partially covered with masks. The most up-to-date image reconstruction structures are based on constrained optimization algorithms and suitable regularizers. In contrast with the above-mentioned image processing methods, the machine learning system presented in this paper employs the superposition of system vectors setting up asymptotic centers of attraction. The structure of the system is implemented using Hopfield-type neural network-based biorthogonal transformations. The reconstruction property gives rise to a superposition processor and reversible computations. Moreover, this paper’s distorted image reconstruction sets up associative memories where images stored in memory are retrieved by distorted/inpainted key images.

This paper reported a study on the 3-dimensional deep-learning-based automatic diagnosis of nasal fractures. (1) Background: The nasal bone is the most protuberant feature of the face; therefore, it is highly vulnerable to facial trauma and its fractures are known as the most common facial fractures worldwide. In addition, its adhesion causes rapid deformation, so a clear diagnosis is needed early after fracture onset. (2) Methods: The collected computed tomography images were reconstructed to isotropic voxel data including the whole region of the nasal bone, which are represented in a fixed cubic volume. The configured 3-dimensional input data were then automatically classified by the deep learning of residual neural networks (3D-ResNet34 and ResNet50) with the spatial context information using a single network, whose performance was evaluated by 5-fold cross-validation. (3) Results: The classification of nasal fractures with simple 3D-ResNet34 and ResNet50 networks achieved areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 94.5% and 93.4% for binary classification, respectively, both indicating unprecedented high performance in the task. (4) Conclusions: In this paper, it is presented the possibility of automatic nasal bone fracture diagnosis using a 3-dimensional Resnet-based single classification network and it will improve the diagnostic environment with future research.

In this paper, a novel deep learning method Mamba-RAYOLO is presented, which can improve detection and classification in the processing and analysis of ECG images in real time by integrating three advanced modules. The feature extraction module in our work with a multi-branch structure during training can capture a wide range of features to ensure efficient inference and rich feature extraction. The attention mechanism module utilized in our proposed network can dynamically focus on the most relevant spatial and channel-wise features to improve detection accuracy and computational efficiency. Then, the extracted features can be refined for efficient spatial feature processing and robust feature fusion. Several sets of experiments have been carried out to test the validity of the proposed Mamba-RAYOLO and these indicate that our method has made significant improvements in the detection and classification of ECG images. The research offers a promising framework for more accurate and efficient medical ECG diagnostics.

Artificial intelligence and Internet of Things are playing an increasingly important role in monitoring beehives. In this paper, we propose a method for automatic recognition of honeybee type by analyzing the sound generated by worker bees and drone bees during their flight close to an entrance to a beehive. We conducted a wide comparative study to determine the most effective preprocessing of audio signals for the detection problem. We compared the results for several different methods for signal representation in the frequency domain, including mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), gammatone cepstral coefficients (GTCCs), the multiple signal classification method (MUSIC) and parametric estimation of power spectral density (PSD) by the Burg algorithm. The coefficients serve as inputs for an autoencoder neural network to discriminate drone bees from worker bees. The classification is based on the reconstruction error of the signal representations produced by the autoencoder. We propose a novel approach to class separation by the autoencoder neural network with various thresholds between decision areas, including the maximum likelihood threshold for the reconstruction error. By classifying real-life signals, we demonstrated that it is possible to differentiate drone bees and worker bees based solely on audio signals. The attained level of detection accuracy enables the creation of an efficient automatic system for beekeepers.

In this paper, artificial intelligence (AI) technology is applied to the electromagnetic imaging of anisotropic objects. Advances in magnetic anomaly sensing systems and electromagnetic imaging use electromagnetic principles to detect and characterize subsurface or hidden objects. We use measured multifrequency scattered fields to calculate the initial dielectric constant distribution of anisotropic objects through the backpropagation scheme (BPS). Later, the estimated multifrequency permittivity distribution is input to a convolutional neural network (CNN) for the adaptive moment estimation (ADAM) method to reconstruct a more accurate image. In the meantime, we also improve the definition of loss function in the CNN. Numerical results show that the improved loss function unifying the structural similarity index measure (SSIM) and root mean square error (RMSE) can effectively enhance image quality. In our simulation environment, noise interference is considered for both TE (transverse electric) and TM (transverse magnetic) waves to reconstruct anisotropic scatterers. Lastly, we conclude that multifrequency reconstructions are more stable and precise than single-frequency reconstructions.

The number of connected devices or Internet of Things (IoT) devices has rapidly increased. According to the latest available statistics, in 2023, there were approximately 17.2 billion connected IoT devices; this is expected to reach 25.4 billion IoT devices by 2030 and grow year over year for the foreseeable future. IoT devices share, collect, and exchange data via the internet, wireless networks, or other networks with one another. IoT interconnection technology improves and facilitates people’s lives but, at the same time, poses a real threat to their security. Denial-of-Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks are considered the most common and threatening attacks that strike IoT devices’ security. These are considered to be an increasing trend, and it will be a major challenge to reduce risk, especially in the future. In this context, this paper presents an improved framework (SDN-ML-IoT) that works as an Intrusion and Prevention Detection System (IDPS) that could help to detect DDoS attacks with more efficiency and mitigate them in real time. This SDN-ML-IoT uses a Machine Learning (ML) method in a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) environment in order to protect smart home IoT devices from DDoS attacks. We employed an ML method based on Random Forest (RF), Logistic Regression (LR), k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), and Naive Bayes (NB) with a One-versus-Rest (OvR) strategy and then compared our work to other related works. Based on the performance metrics, such as confusion matrix, training time, prediction time, accuracy, and Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (AUC-ROC), it was established that SDN-ML-IoT, when applied to RF, outperforms other ML algorithms, as well as similar approaches related to our work. It had an impressive accuracy of 99.99%, and it could mitigate DDoS attacks in less than 3 s. We conducted a comparative analysis of various models and algorithms used in the related works. The results indicated that our proposed approach outperforms others, showcasing its effectiveness in both detecting and mitigating DDoS attacks within SDNs. Based on these promising results, we have opted to deploy SDN-ML-IoT within the SDN. This implementation ensures the safeguarding of IoT devices in smart homes against DDoS attacks within the network traffic.

This paper presents a classification model for eye diseases utilizing attention mechanisms to learn features from fundus images and structures. The study focuses on diagnosing glaucoma by extracting retinal vessels and the optic disc from fundus images using a ResU-Net-based segmentation model and Hough Circle Transform, respectively. The extracted structures and preprocessed images were inputted into a CNN-based multi-input model for training. Comparative evaluations demonstrated that our model outperformed other research models in classifying glaucoma, even with a smaller dataset. Ablation studies confirmed that using attention mechanisms to learn fundus structures significantly enhanced performance. The study also highlighted the challenges in normal case classification due to potential feature degradation during structure extraction. Future research will focus on incorporating additional fundus structures such as the macula, refining extraction algorithms, and expanding the types of classified eye diseases.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has punched a devastating blow on the majority of the world’s population. Millions of people have been infected while hundreds of thousands have died of the disease throwing many families into mourning and other psychological torments. It has also crippled the economy of many countries of the world leading to job losses, high inflation, and dwindling Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The duo of social distancing and contact tracing are the major technological-based non-pharmaceutical public health intervention strategies adopted for combating the dreaded disease. These technologies have been deployed by different countries around the world to achieve effective and efficient means of maintaining appropriate distance and tracking the transmission pattern of the diseases or identifying those at high risk of infecting others. This paper aims to synthesize the research efforts on contact tracing and social distancing to minimize the spread of COVID-19. The paper critically and comprehensively reviews contact tracing technologies, protocols, and mobile applications (apps) that were recently developed and deployed against the coronavirus disease. Furthermore, the paper discusses social distancing technologies, appropriate methods to maintain distances, regulations, isolation/quarantine, and interaction strategies. In addition, the paper highlights different security/privacy vulnerabilities identified in contact tracing and social distancing technologies and solutions against these vulnerabilities. We also x-rayed the strengths and weaknesses of the various technologies concerning their application in contact tracing and social distancing. Finally, the paper proposed insightful recommendations and open research directions in contact tracing and social distancing that could assist researchers, developers, and governments in implementing new technological methods to combat the menace of COVID-19.

With the depletion of surface resources, mining will develop toward the deep surface in the future, the objective conditions such as the mining environment will be more complex and dangerous than now, and the requirements for personnel and equipment will be higher and higher. The efficient mining of deep space is inseparable from movable and flexible production and transportation equipment such as scrapers. In the new era, intelligence is leading to the development trend of scraper (LHD), path tracking control is the key to the intelligent scraper (LHD), and it is also an urgent problem to be solved for unmanned driving. This paper describes the realization of the automatic operation of articulating the scraper (LHD) from two aspects, a mathematical model and trajectory tracking control method, and it focuses on the research of the path tracking control scheme in the field of unmanned driving, that is, an LQR controller. On this basis, combined with different intelligent clustering algorithms, the parameters of the LQR controller are optimized to find the optimal solution of the LQR controller. Then, the path tracking control of an intelligent LHD unmanned driving technology is studied, focusing on the optimization of linear quadratic optimal control (LQR) and the intelligent cluster algorithms AGA, QPSO, and ACA; this research has great significance for the development of the intelligent scraper (LHD). As mining engineers, we not only need to conduct research for practical engineering projects but also need to produce theoretical designs for advanced mining technology; therefore, the area of intelligent mining is the one we need to explore at present and in the future. Finally, this paper serves as a guide to starting a conversation, and it has implications for the development and the future of underground transportation.

Vertigo is a sensation of movement that results from disorders of the inner ear balance organs and their central connections, with aetiologies that are often benign and sometimes serious. An individual who develops vertigo can be effectively treated only after a correct diagnosis of the underlying vestibular disorder is reached. Recent advances in artificial intelligence promise novel strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with this common symptom. Human analysts may experience difficulties manually extracting patterns from large clinical datasets. Machine learning techniques can be used to visualize, understand, and classify clinical data to create a computerized, faster, and more accurate evaluation of vertiginous disorders. Practitioners can also use them as a teaching tool to gain knowledge and valuable insights from medical data. This paper provides a review of the literatures from 1999 to 2021 using various feature extraction and machine learning techniques to diagnose vertigo disorders. This paper aims to provide a better understanding of the work done thus far and to provide future directions for research into the use of machine learning in vertigo diagnosis.
