A simple framework to estimate the potential of solar industrial process heating (SIPH) and corresponding CO 2 emissions mitigation in paper industry in India is presented. Geographical locations with clusters of paper mills have been identified and the annual process heating requirement for paper production (based on raw material use) at each cluster has been estimated. The total process heating potential for the paper industry in India has been estimated at 25.2 PJ/annum. Using the estimated performance of a commercially available parabolic trough based SIPH system with collector area requirement of 1.11 million m 2 annual solar fraction in the range of 0.25–0.30 have been estimated. Annual energy delivery of SIPH systems estimated at 4.34 PJ per annum. Finally at 8 main locations with clusters of paper mills in India considered in this study, adoption of SIPH without storage is expected to mitigate 0.34 million tonnes of CO 2 emissions annually. An enzyme cocktail (xylanase-15U, pectinase-2U, α-amylase-2.5U, protease-2U and lipase- 1.8U) from Bacillus halodurans was applied for the biobleaching of unbleached and ODL (oxygen delignification) agro based pulp in the R&D set up of Shreyans Paper Mills Ludhiana, India, upscaling from 5 g (at lab scale) to 100 g odp (oven dried pulp). Enzyme pre-treatment was carried out at temperature and pH optima of 65 °C and 9–9.5 for 90 min followed by reduced chemical treatment. In case of unbleached agro pulp, as compared to the total chemical bleaching in mill, enzyme cocktail pre-treatment reduced the chemical usage by 50% without compromising brightness and rather with increased tensile strength (23.55%), burst factor (20.3%) and tear factor (3.17%) and reduced kappa number (19.5%). In case of ODL pulp, enzyme cocktail pre-treatment reduced the chemical usage by 40%, yet increasing brightness (2.24%), tensile strength (20.96%), burst factor (5.1%) and tear factor (8.2%) with reduction in kappa number (4.54%). Carbon footprints (CFs) are the measure of extent of green house gases (GHGs) emitted from any organization or activity. Reporting of extent of CFs in terms of CO 2 e from educational campus may be considered as a first step towards sustainable educational practices. The present study employs a bottom up approach where CFs due to consumption of resources from each academic department is evaluated separately and net is obtained by adding contributions from individual departments. This method has the advantage of avoiding the potential overlaps in the calculation. Hence this approach to calculate carbon footprints can lead to their precise CF evaluation. In order to justify above hypothesis, CF evaluation was carried out at Shikshana Prasarak Mandali's Sir Parashurambhau College, Pune for three consecutive years starting from 2015 to 2016. The average carbon footprints over the study period were 3630.57 ± 296.79 tones CO 2 e per year with per capita emission of 0.81 ± 0.06 tones CO 2 e. The emission density determined from the average value was found to be 0.0361 ± 0.0029 tCO 2 e m−2 of the campus. It was observed that emission sources classified as scope-1, scope-2 and scope-3 contribute 28%, 48% and 25% respectively to total emission. Out of all the emission sources identified, apart from human contribution through respiration, electricity (35%), biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, stationary paper, 7%, use of chemicals in the laboratories (5%), paper for official purpose (12%), LPG (3%) and transport (27%) were main contributors. This paper delves into the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies in the manufacturing sector, providing a framework tailored for adoption in India, a rapidly advancing digital economy. The current literature does not go into detail on industry 4.0 technology in the context of agile manufacturing. Addressing this critical gap in the literature, we identify 15 criteria across six categories, leveraging the entropy method to compute their weights. We prioritize Industry 4.0 technologies in the context of agile manufacturing using a comprehensive analysis that employs the TOPSIS and Fuzzy DEMATEL methodologies. Results indicate that cybersecurity, Cloud, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are the most commonly used technologies in agile manufacturing. The fuzzy DEMATEL-based framework identifies cybersecurity, Big data, Cloud, simulation, augmented reality, and IoT as 'cause' technologies, while additive manufacturing, robotics, mobile devices, and systems integration are identified as 'effect' technologies. The paper proposes practical strategies for managers in India to facilitate the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies, thereby enhancing firms' agility in the digital age. The rise in environmental awareness and personal well-being has led to a shift in menstrual product preferences. This research, focusing on women from India, utilizes a mixed-methods approach underpinned by the Push-Pull-Mooring (PPM) framework to investigate the transition from sanitary napkins to menstrual cups. Data from 894 menstrual product users from India were analyzed utilizing PLS-SEM. The study found that health concerns and perceived costs were significant push factors, while minimalism and environmental considerations acted as pull factors. However, social stigma and perceived complexity served as mooring factors. This study extends its practicality to product manufacturers, marketers, and health educators, providing actionable strategies to promote menstrual cups with the aim of surmounting prevailing hindrances. In recent decades, the world has witnessed a sudden rise in population and rapid urbanization. This has led to an increase in the water demand and consequently an upsurge in wastewater. Water scarcity, coupled with untreated wastewater, has become a major concern throughout the world. Municipalities are challenged with the task of treating wastewater and meeting domestic, agricultural, and industrial demands. Mismanagement of wastewater results in economic, social and environmental loss. The high concentration of population, lack of sanitation and water security, reduced awareness, and evident pollution have made India a home full of opportunity and innovation in the wastewater management (WWM) business. Despite several research evaluating the connection between sustainability and the bottom line of firms, the existing research is inconclusive. In addition, most studies focus on multinational firms based in the United States or Europe, while research in the context of emerging economies is scant. This paper endeavours to investigate the strength of the association between Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) disclosure scores and the financial performance of 272 Indian firms listed on National Stock Exchange for the period 2015 to 2021 by employing panel data regression techniques. The results indicate that organisations having better ESG performance outperform their industry peers financially and are valued more by the market. Moreover, the data indicates that financial markets for lenders consider ESG disclosure when determining creditworthiness. In accordance with this, businesses can examine their operations and become more aligned with eco-friendly methods. Even though ESG disclosure appears to be associated with improved financial success, this is not the case across all industries and during COVID-19 pandemic. This study is relevant due to the growing significance of sustainability and the role of emerging nations in international commerce. It helps managers prioritize resource allocations to ESG-related activities that may affect financial performance differently across industry sectors, thus adding to the literature on the financial effects of ESG disclosures, particularly industry-specific aspects. The rapid growth of soybean cultivation in the world augurs well for achieving SDG2 of promoting sustainable agriculture, ending hunger, achieving food security, and improving nutrition. India started promoting soybean cultivation in the 1970s to combat dietary protein deficiencies and augment smallholders' incomes. However, soybean yield remains low and plateaued at one ton per hectare for the past three decades. This paper leverages a large primary dataset and explores the speed of soybean varietal change by applying survival functions and analyzing determinants of varietal turnover time employing a dynamic framework and harnessing duration analysis. The results show that adopting leading soybean varieties has reached saturation and that policy intervention can have an immediate impact. The weighted average age of soybean varieties in farmers' fields is relatively high at 15.6 years, implying a slower varietal change rate. The lack of improved varieties with desirable traits, poor information flow, and growers' preference for traits beyond yield-hamper faster varietal substitution. Further, analysis indicates regional variations in driving the speed of varietal replacement. The findings have significant implications for spurring soybean yields through investments in varietal development, leveraging modern molecular methods for long juvenility and photo-insensitivity, disseminating information, and institutional changes enabling the private sector participation in crop breeding. Increasing demand of automotive products and over-consumption of natural resources compel the manufacturers to implement the Extension of Useful Life (EUL) methodology of automotive products through remanufacturing. Remanufacturing is a process in which the original functionality of End-of-Use (EoU) or End-of-Life (EoL) product is restored and the remanufactured product is treated as good as a new product. In spite of these advantages, remanufacturing is still not so popular and organized in developing countries like India. The developing countries encounter several problems in strategic, tactical and operational level of management while implementing the remanufacturing business option. In this paper attempts have been made to identify both the enablers and the barriers in managing business of EUL products through remanufacturing in India. Subsequently the structural relationships among the enablers and barriers have been modelled in this paper. Initially an extensive literature review is carried out to identify the factors depicting the enablers and barriers. Then, Fuzzy Interpretive Structural Modeling (FISM) is applied to develop and evaluate the structural relationships among the identified factors. The application of FISM helps in understanding the effect of major enablers and barriers in extending useful life of automotive products through remanufacturing. The outcome of FISM based analysis shows that low cost, price sensitive market, cheap labour cost, and fast turnaround are the major enablers for OEM in initiating EUL business practice through remanufacturing, whereas the major barriers are lack of proper design of product, stringent foreign trade policy, cannibalization of new product, lack of proper remarketing strategies, lack of reverse network design, lack of proper maintaining the database of the customers, seller reputation and identity. The analysis is further enriched by MICMAC technique, which leads to getting an insight on the significance of the dependence and driving power of both the enablers and barriers. As the world struggles to cope with the pressing matters of global warming, rising temperature, and environmental degradation, the need for sustainable practices has become more urgent than ever for individuals and other establishments. Organizations across industries recognize the importance of adopting sustainable practices, not only to meet societal expectations but also to achieve long-term success. This research paper studies the influence of sustainable marketing on customer loyalty, focusing on the consumer electronics sector in India. A mixed-methods approach incorporating descriptive and causal research methods was used; with data collected from 302 participants from India's capital, Delhi and its nearby regions. Structural equation modeling was employed to establish multivariate relationships and Smart PLS 4 was used to analyze the data. The results suggest that sustainable marketing practices positively influence brand image and loyalty. Additionally, brand image acts as an intermediary between sustainable marketing and customer loyalty. Recently, Indian manufacturing industries have undergone a significant transformation emphasising customer-centric objectives to meet the dynamic market's demands. To achieve this, existing industries must upgrade their existing infrastructure to a smart environment driven by automatic data exchange, transparency, and interconnected digital systems. These are the key enabling elements of Industry 4.0. As a result, many Indian industries are developing various sophisticated implementation strategies for adopting it. However, few research works and strategies contribute to its effective and successful implementation. This paper proposes two types of implementation strategies for implementing Industry 4.0 enabling technologies based on the requirements and adaptability of India's commercial vehicle manufacturing industry. The first strategy identifies various aspects of implementing Industry 4.0 enabling framework elements and categorizes it for developing implementation strategies based on India's commercial vehicle manufacturing industry. The significance of each was determined using fuzzy-AHP analysis and ranked accordingly based on the linguistic responses of the industry experts. The most significant framework element is found to be 'Decision Making and Management Skills'. The second strategy emphasizes long-term sustainable implementation objectives. The framework elements are reconstructed and developed into a novel, customized sustainable framework based on six dimensions of sustainability. Using the Fuzzy-DEMATEL method, the causal relationships among these elements are investigated to determine a sustainable implementation strategy. 'Central Database Server' is determined to be the most significant sustainable framework element, while the maximum number of casual relationships is obtained from the group, 'Skill upgradation of the workforce'. This paper proposes a novel research direction for implementing Industry 4.0 technologies into the existing industry. The findings provide several insights and strategies for technological upgradation in other industries in this geographical region. Abstract Physical, Regulatory and Brand value risks due to climate change challenges are foreseen by businesses globally. This paper is oriented towards these challenges and prepared a comprehensive Greenhouse gases (GHG) footprint plan and identification of mitigation opportunities for ONGC, a fortune 500 and national oil company of India. Internationally recognized standards and guidelines like Greenhouse Gas Protocol, ISO-14064, and American Petroleum Institute compendium have been referred for quantifying carbon emissions in nearly real 400 + operation control facilities. The GHG inventory is based on Operational Control approach to identify the boundary for which emissions are to be quantified and two significant scopes of emissions viz Direct Emissions and Indirect Emissions are identified and quantified. The quantification concluded that GHG emission footprint for the year 2016–17 is in the range of 9 million tons of CO 2 equivalent. GHG emissions mainly account due to stationary combustion, fugitive emissions and wastewater treatment, which share the around 56% of total emissions. Another 24–26% of emissions are contributed due to flaring, processes by glycol dehydrator, acid gas removal units, and by electricity purchased from the grid. As a result, it has been found that ONGC emits 187 kg CO 2 e emissions per tonne throughput and also compared with its global peer organizations. At the organization level, "Key Industrial Sites" have been identified as contributing higher GHG emissions and accordingly key "hot-spots," a list of 15 GHG mitigation opportunities have been proposed in the paper. Two GHG mitigation initiatives based on solar energy and bioenergy application undertaken at ONGC has also been briefed on case studies. The use of non-imaging collectors has a wide scope in process heat applications based on its performance and economics. An experimental investigation of trapezoidal/concave cavity surface receiver (TSR) for non-imaging solar concentrating collector is carried out in this paper. The implementation of surface/coil receiver instead of tubular receiver for non-imaging collector is presented in this paper. A TSR with helical coil is developed for non – imaging concentrating collector, Elliptical Hyperbolic Collector (EHC). Experiments are carried to estimate the thermal performance of the system under various operating conditions such as two operating modes: series and parallel modes of operation of the collector, two circulation modes: passive and active modes. The stagnation temperature of the trapezoidal/concave cavity surface receiver is measured to be 118 °C on a clear sunny day in October and 102 °C on a cloudy day in February. The daily performance tests are performed under different operating conditions. Based on the experimental study, for the flow rate of 0.03 kg/min and 0.5 kg/min, the fluid outlet temperature is estimated to be 87 °C at 768 W/m 2 and 49 °C at 908 W/m 2 respectively. The corresponding instantaneous efficiency was calculated to be 9% and 40% respectively. The numerical model is developed to predict the temperature of the fluid along the receiver. The pressure drop across a receiver is estimated to be 9.3 kPa for a flow rate of 0.5 kg/min. Exergy analysis of the system is carried out and it ranges between 10 and 20%. The costs involved in fabricating the EHC system are compared to that of a non-imaging concentrating collector (CPC) of same aperture area. An economic analysis of the system is also carried out to study the feasibility of the system based on the life cycle savings method by estimating the annual solar savings from the EHC system. Information and communication technologies applied to education through e-learning innovative solutions emerge as a relevant driver of change in the publishing industry, involving not only the supply of new educational resources, but also a reduction of paper consumption used in the traditional book edition. The dual goal of this paper is, firstly, to identify sustainable business model archetypes that illustrate the behavior and potential growth of firms in the e-learning industry and, secondly, to provide evidence of the existence of these archetypes through the study of strategic actions and managerial perceptions in a case study of rapid internationalization in this industry. The analysis follows a two-stage method. First, the main behaviors of e-learning firms are identified and grouped in sustainable business archetypes and the research proposals defined. Then these proposals are applied to a case study of the e-learning industry. This analysis furnishes evidence to conclude that the alliance of software firms with publishers becomes a driver that allows e-learning firms to overcome some of the limits of their growth model and maintain sustainable business models. Rice is the main staple crop of India, where it covers about 44 million hectares of arable land for the cultivation. To tackle the problem of in situ field burning of rice straw in various states is the major challenge for researchers, government and farmers. This review is focused on cleaner and environment friendly technologies that can apply easily for the management of straw economically and ecofriendly. Conversion of straw into biomethane, biohydrogen, manufacturing of pulp and paper, in house enzyme synthesis, biochar, bio oil production, animal feed preparation and use for the mushroom composting are incredibly achievable with the modest efforts. Proposed technologies have potential to rein the straw burning at root level and further can improve the socio economic status of farmers and public that lives in the rural areas. Many of the above said technologies are least exploited at commercial scale, because most of the Indian farmers are unacquainted from the financial and environmental benefits of these advancements. Responsible management of electronic waste (E-waste) is a major apprehension in contemporary urban India. As a toxic waste stream, E-waste calls for conscientious management practices in order to avoid possible human health and environmental consequences. Publics' consumption, disposal behaviour and awareness/perception are central to any successful E-waste management initiative. This paper is a journey from a review of existing literature on some significant aspects of E-waste (including some widely used conceptual frameworks for waste management studies) towards a new conceptual framework of ‘public understandings of E-waste and its disposal’ in urban India. Accordingly, the paper is divided into two parts: 1) In-depth literature review on a few important aspects of E-waste and 2) Review of publics' perceptions of E-waste and the determinants of their consumption and disposal intention with the help of specific theoretical underpinnings. The concluding conceptual framework underlying our work uses elements that stem from the ideas of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and conspicuous consumption. Further, a case study carried out in the city of Bangalore is considered to validate the relevance of the new conceptual framework. The growth of manufacturing small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) is vital as they have a significant amount of share in total manufacturing output. In this era of globalization, SMEs are compelled to ensure sustainable profitability through cost savings, while being environmentally conscious at the same time. It has been reported in the prior investigations that lean and green practices can achieve excellent results if they are implemented simultaneously. Hence, SMEs need to adopt integrated lean and green manufacturing as this can address economic and environmental concerns together. The drivers for implementation of integrated lean and green manufacturing in SMEs have not been thoroughly explored in the past studies. This sets the motivation for the present research. Thus, in this paper drivers for integrated lean and green manufacturing are identified from the combined support of existing literature and experts' opinions in the relevant field. The drivers are ranked using multi-criteria decision making methods such as technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and simple additive weighting (SAW) in fuzzy environment using environmental, social and economic perspectives, however, consolidated ranking is obtained by borda method. The results reveal that top management commitment, technology up-gradation, current legislation, green brand image and future legislation are five most important drivers for the implementation of integrated lean and green manufacturing in Indian manufacturing SMEs. The research counters the uncertainties in importance of criteria weights using sensitivity analysis which determines the influence of criteria weights on the prioritization. Finally, the paper concludes with some managerial implications which will help the policy makers in government and industry to focus on few important drivers to facilitate the integrated lean and green manufacturing implementation in SMEs with limited resources. Green logistics is an important aspect of production system in today’s world. It combines various efforts to quantify and control the environmental effect of production activities in an enterprise. This research is intended to emphasize upon the ways by which organizations can accomplish positive ecological effects simply by modifying their logistics practices. This paper presents a case study of an Indian automobile company by analyzing alternatives for green practices along with organizational objectives. It is imperative to focus on the green practices in context of Indian automobile sector as the volume of vehicles in India has increased considerably during last few decades. Accordingly, this paper attempts to improve the performance for sustainable adaptation of green practices of an Indian company by selecting the best alternative obtained from the use of Analytical Hierarchy Process to analyze alternatives for green practices in the assembly and packaging processes. Alternatives have been evaluated on the basis of three criteria i.e. green efficiency, factor of safety and ease of operation. The sustainability transition of electricity sectors is a matter of competition between multiple emerging renewable systems and dominant, established conventional systems. These transitions are multi-dimensional and are featured with non-linear and causal interactions between social, technical, economic and political components. Understanding the dynamic of transitions, i.e. how transitions unfold, can inform effective policy interventions. This paper aims to present a narrative-modelling approach to improve the understanding and description of transition dynamics in electricity sectors. The central ideas of the paper are: (1) the use of qualitative transition narratives helps to capture the co-evolving nature of society and technology which are simplified in modelling approaches; (2) narratives, with concepts from the sustainability transitions field, also guide the development of a model structure; and (3) computational models, in return, reproduce the complexity of transition dynamics, i.e. feedback loops, non-linearity, and time delays—the features which are impracticable to analyse with transition narratives alone. We use the historical transition of India's electricity sector to demonstrate the implementation of our proposed approach. First, an overview of the transition narratives is presented and the model structure, developed based on the narratives, is explained. Then, it is argued how the coupling of the narratives and model improves our understating of the positive impacts as well as the side-effects of stable feed-in tariffs and accelerated depreciation on the penetration levels of wind and solar electricity. This paper discusses about the results of a short term monitoring study of sea coast contaminated with oil spill. Collision of two oil-cargo ships, namely BW Maple and MT Dawn Kanchipuram near the Ennore Port, Chennai had released an approximately 200 tonnes of heavy fuel oil. We analyzed four different oil spill samples collected from Chennai beaches for different time intervals (1st, 3rd, 6th, 10th day of oil spill) from 1 km away from the source of the off shore spill location. The physicochemical characteristics of spilled oil sludge, concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in the spilled oil were investigated. The variations in pH, moisture content and volatile hydrocarbon content, viscosity and density of the spilled oil were in the range of 7 ± 0.2, 255–575 g/kg, 118 to 850 PaS and 1.04 to 0.98 g/cm3 respectively. Elemental analysis showed that C, H, N and S were in the range of 9.9–13.3 (%), 0.63 to 1.76 (%), 1.88 to 1.02 (%) and 0.29 to 0.27 (%) respectively. Analysis of oil spill samples using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GCMS) shows the presence of recalcitrant and hazardous PAHs such as fluoranthene and pyrene. Ocean sediments were collected at different locations along the coast line from Ennore to Cooum after 60 days of oil spill and analyzed for TPH in GCMS. The results showed that the residual concentrations of TPH varied from 0.19 to 3.43 mg/g. The presence of heavy PAHs, which are highly toxic and recalcitrant, could pose a severe threat to the marine environment and ecology.The long term effects of these compounds were unexplored on marine environment. Rapid industrialization, urbanization, and motorization lead to hiking of air pollution in various mega cities including Delhi, India. Studies done to analyze pollution suggests that vehicle exhaust emissions are major contributor to the urban air quality along with many other comparable sources. Hence to check instantaneous pollution increment, government aims to reduce vehicle emission. Traditional policies are working at times for holding sudden increase but long-term effects are not seen which need meso-spatial and small temporal policy. For optimizing meso-spatial policies implementation, many intricacies related to moving and stationary sources in near real-time have to be monitored including vehicular emission, itself. Analyzing these moving source emissions on the meso-spatial level is challenging. Therefore, the present study is an attempt to first understand the need of meso-spatial and near real-time checking policy and then leveraging the usage of previous region specific pollutant survey reports to map real-time pollution monitoring parameters. For that, a real-time vehicle monitoring strategy is proposed to map city-wide traffic congestion and emission using crowd-source data of Google Maps. For comparative study of different meso-spatial regions real-time moving source pollutant parameter 'μ' is calculated using a factor 'F'. Also, the different effects of congestion on vehicular emission in two different meso-spatial areas of Delhi is presented using comparative case study. Analysis of case study revealed that Anand Vihar area is more prone to vehicle emission variability in case of congestion fluctuation. Further the discussion of short temporal and spatial emission calculation, for weekly pollution evaluation is presented in the paper. How far the de-linking and morphological and hydrological degradation of tie channels connecting river to the wetland are caused for the areal and hydrological transformation of a wetland was not received enough attention in previous literature. This paper tried to explain this about the confluence reach of the Dwarka and Brahmni rivers in Moribund deltaic India. In order to explain the linkages 16 tie channels' change depicting variables and seven wetland area and hydrological transformation (consistency, hydro-period, water depth, water richness etc.) related variables were taken. Ordinary least square (OLS) regression was applied for explain the linkage. Machine learning approaches were applied for water richness mapping. Tie channel evolution was digitized from the Survey of India (SOI) toposheet (1974) and historical Google Earth images. The result revealed that, the tie channel witnessed morphological and hydrological degradations like channel constriction, channel clogging, flow lowering etc. and these were further identified as some vectors of areal shrinkage and growing hydrological insecurity in the linked wetlands. The total wetland area declined from 44.89 km2 to 16.86 km2 from 1991 to 2021. The rate of areal loss, shallowing WD, growing inconsistency of water presence, narrowing HP, and weakening WR was found high in recent times due to de-linking and degradations of tie channels. This approach of explanation of hydrological insecurity of wetland in relation to tie channel degradations, de-linking and findings are quite unique. Competitiveness of a country depends on the innovation capacity of its industries while sustainability relies upon the adoption of cleaner production processes. Hence, to promote economic development without negative environmental impact, it is imperative to have appropriate development policies and also a sound instrument to monitor the effectiveness of the supporting ecosystem. India, one of the world's largest economies with a huge base of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), makes it a perfect sample for creating an Index to measure innovation for sustainability and adds to the empirical literature. The study identifies the determinants of innovation and the key drivers using multivariate tools on the empirical data collected from the MSMEs in 4 key sectors that have Social, Economic, and Environmental relevance. The findings suggest that "Market sources" is the most influential determinant of innovation, followed by "Institutional sources", "Market sophistication" and "Business Membership Organisations". Further, findings of the Principal Component Analysis revealed that "Productivity and Profitability" consideration is the most important driver for adoption of innovation for sustainability by MSME units. The other drivers are "Regulatory and Occupational Health and Safety Needs"; "Immediate Survival Needs"; "Raw Material and other Cost Issues"; "Developmental Support", and "Competition from Similar Units". Based on the relative importance of these factors, an index is created to measure the effectiveness of the innovation ecosystem. While the disparities between women and men in respect of healthcare, education, nutrition, livelihood opportunities, and political participation are global phenomena, development of human and social capitals is crucial in this regard. In particular, emphasis on improvement in female education is imperative for bridging such gaps towards a gender indifferent society. Accordingly, policy initiatives and institutional arrangements have been made to promote female education, especially in the developing and underdeveloped countries. Nonetheless, it is uncertain whether such initiatives can necessarily improve female education. For example, the initiatives in India have mostly focused on improving physical infrastructure and other amenities in schools, raising awareness, improving nutrition, and providing financial and other supports. While such interventions are crucial, lack of basic amenities at home can also potentially hinder female education in various ways, particularly in rural areas. This paper examines how household basic amenities influence female education in rural India. Based on secondary data and applying panel data estimation techniques for Indian states, it is found that sanitation facilities at home, access to electricity, use of cleaner cooking fuels, time taken to collect water, and girl sex ratio have significant impact on school attendance of girl child and female literacy rate. While time take to collect water affects female education adversely, the rests have positive impact on the same. Furthermore, public spending on education also impacts female literacy and female literacy relative to the male literacy rate positively, though they do not have any significant influence on school attendance of girls. Further, poverty does not have any significant impact on female education. The findings, therefore, suggest that success of development policies requires inclusive and comprehensive approach to explore the complementarity across the interventions. In addition to development of school infrastructure and provision of other services, emphasis should also be given on improving household basic amenities for better outcome on female education. The annual consumption of petroleum products in India was about 221 million metric tons in 2015. Of this, 84% was imported. The Indian industrial sector accounts for about 16%-20% of the total fuel consumption for thermal energy for different heating applications in the temperature range of 50°C--250 °C. Solar collectors can meet these temperature requirements and offer the possibility to mitigate the consumption of oil. This study highlights the fact that conversion efficiency from solar energy is much higher for process heating than for electricity generation and that process heating applications constitute a significant share of industrial energy consumption. In this paper, a methodology has been developed to estimate the potential for integration of solar collectors for process heating. The methodology employs process operating temperatures to select the type of solar collectors. The size of the solar field is estimated taking into account the thermal heat loads, working fluid and temperatures of these processes, the efficiency of the chosen solar collectors, location-based solar irradiance and capacity utilization of the solar collectors. The proposed methodology has been validated with a software tool called System Advisor Model (SAM). The techno-economic analysis will indicate the viability of solar systems for integration in industries. Therefore, the consociated parameters on economic (capital cost, fuel oil savings, monetary benefits), financial (Payback periods, Rates of Returns) and environmental (Carbon savings) are estimated. Further, the methodology has been applied to select Indian industries to verify its potential quantitatively. The industries selected include Textile, Pulp & Paper, Dairy, Leather and Automobile. Process-wise energy demands are considered while estimating the potential as the fuel requirement offset by solar energy in terms of absolute fuel oil savings, monetary benefits and carbon savings. The other economic and financial parameters mentioned above were estimated to verify the capability and present the market position of solar systems. Further, sensitivity analyses have been performed with respect to solar energy penetration and fuel oil prices to address the viability of integration of solar energy for process heating. The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of ecodesigned packaging on consumers' response. The theory of reasoned action (TRA) served as a framework for identifying major antecedents of ecodesigned packaging behavior and for determining their relative importance. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data of 204 young Indian consumers and test the proposed conceptual model. The finding of the study confirmed that purchase intention towards ecofriendly packaging is significantly influenced by personal norms, attitude, environmental concern and willingness to pay. The paper also provides interesting insights about young consumers towards eco-designed packaging. These useful insights will helpful to marketers in developing the focused strategies towards young consumers and encourage them to reduce the global ecological footprint of packaging. Cleaner technology strategy is a firm's long term planning to avoid negative externality to the natural environment and remain competitive in future markets. The paper proposes a comprehensive definition of cleaner technology strategy and presents its important aspects to derive competitive advantages based on an empirical study of sixty firms across the industry sectors in India. A measure of cleaner technology strategy was constructed and, tested for its reliability and validity. Descriptive statistics was used to understand the relative importance of competitive aspects of cleaner technology strategy in Indian firms. The result shows that cleaner technology strategy derived from top management's vision of future technologies and ability to manage risk due to natural environment play a critical role in implementation of cleaner technology strategy. Firm's ability to pursue regulators for additional benefits, ability to manage risk associated with failures and imitation, and focus on up-gradation of in-house technological capabilities help in re-positioning to derive competitive advantages. The results also indicate that sustainable solutions offer differential competitive advantages across the industry sectors and firm's focus to update skill set of employees is also linked with industry sectors. The paper contributes to existing literature by making distinction between cleaner technology strategy and other strategies like pollution prevention and product stewardship. Public and private food consumption is responsible for significant environmental impacts, resulting in numerous studies that highlight the problem and reveal its magnitude at global and national scales. Drawing on a high level of data aggregation and focussing on individual choices and attitudes, current accounts stop short of grappling with the underlying complexity of the phenomenon. In this paper, we explore the conceptual value and methodological feasibility of linking Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and Social Practice Theory (SPT) to apprehend household food consumption dynamics. We develop and pilot a “Practice-extended MFA” framework among selected households in Bangalore, India. While MFA modelling serves to describe and quantify all food consumption processes and related flows at the micro-level, SPT is applied to investigate how individual, technological and sociological aspects of consumption practices converge towards household food “metabolic profiles”. The results revealed a complex system of interactions between food provisioning, storage and management practices, as well as socio-cultural norms. The paper concludes by emphasizing the contribution of a reflective stance between household metabolisms and consumption practices revealing not only what and how much food is consumed and wasted, but why and in what way. Abstract Biomass has often been regarded as a promising renewable energy resource to mitigate climate change. However, what will be the impact on global surface temperature if biomass replace fossil fuel remain unclear. This paper, through a case study in Uttar Pradesh, India address this issue by assessing biomass resource potential to reduce fossil fuel demand and mitigate climate change. Impact of biomass power related GHG emissions on global surface temperature is estimated using the Absolute Global Temperature change Potential (AGTP) climate metric. Uttar Pradesh can produce 71 Mt surplus biomass annually, equivalent to 7298 MW power. Power density of biomass range between 0.10 and 0.25 Wm-2. Significant amount of GHG emissions reduction is possible if biomass replace fossil fuel as a power source in the region. Annual GHG emissions associated with 1 MWh of power derived from coal, natural gas and biomass would cause 4.10 × 10−7, 2.40 × 10−7 and 1.25 × 10−7 mK rise in global surface temperature, 100 years after an initial emission, indicating potential of biomass power to mitigate climate change. Variation in spatio-temporal distribution and low power density could be delimiting factors in large-scale deployment of biomass power. Abstract Lack of infrastructures, rapid growth in population, high urbanization and unsegregation makes the management of municipal solid waste a difficult task for local authorities. The paper proposes an approach for selecting the waste transfer station locations under unsegregated and segregated waste scenarios in an economical manner. The analytical approach is a combination of two basic components, (i) a mathematical optimization model for the overall cost of municipal solid waste management; and (ii) tools of a geographic information system for creating the dataset of the mathematical model. The novelty in the developed model includes strategic allocation of transfer stations for three scenarios: (i) solid waste collected from sources without segregation (Scenario (I)); (ii) waste collected considering source separation and transfer stations taking only one type of wastes (Scenario (II)); (iii) waste collected under source separation and transfer stations having multiple halls for multiple types of waste (Scenario (III)). The proposed approach has been verified by applying on city of Bilaspur, India. Optimization model selects six best locations for Scenario (I), (II) and five for Scenario (III). Results also show that among the three scenarios studied, scenario (III) is the best as it is providing more profit than scenario (II) and (I). Validity of the model is tested by ANOVA analysis and it suggested key parameters (frequency, operating cost and land value) as significant. This finding suggests that transfer stations with or without multiple halls under source separation environment can earn the profit from solid waste while solving the problem of high collection cost and landfills. Abstract Many Climate Smart Agricultural (CSA) technologies fail to achieve their full potential impact due to low levels of adoption by smallholder farmers and difficulties in scaling CSA. This paper presents how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can act as change agents for the uptake of CSA technologies where their business models may be seen as adoption and scaling mechanisms. Drawing upon our fieldwork in Punjab (India) during which over 100 respondents have been interviewed, critical issues and enabling factors for the business model of two types of SMEs, i.e. farmer cooperatives and individual service providers of climate smart technologies have been identified. Enabling factors supporting adoption are driven by scientific and practical evidence of CSA technologies, good partnership between SMEs and research institutes, good customer relationships and effective channels through farmers' field trials. Critical issues consist of distortive government subsidies on energy and the lack of market intelligence affecting the profitability of the business model. Scaling is enhanced through market intelligence and a favouring regulatory landscape. However, difficult socio-economic circumstances and distortive government subsidies limit the role of SMEs business model as mechanism for scaling. The post-harvest and marketing system is a chain of interlinked activities starting after the harvest time and continuing until the delivery of the food product to the consumers. An efficient post-harvest system ensures that the harvested product reaches the customer in the shortest possible time interval without compromising the volume, quality, and safety of the product. The objective of this paper is to identify and model the critical causal factors of post-harvest losses (PHL) in the fruit and vegetable (F&V) supply chain in India, with the help of a detailed literature review and expert opinions. Fifteen causal factors were identified using the decision making and trial evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method, which is a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) tool. This was applied for determining the cause-effect relationships among the identified factors. The results highlighted that the most critical factors that should be tackled to ensure progressive PHL reduction are: lack of proper packaging facilities (PHL3), lack of proper storage facilities (PHL1), insufficient infrastructure (PHL4), improved handling of the products at the farm and marketplace (PHL2), lack of processing facilities (PHL5), lack of linkage between the farmers and processing units (PHL6), lack of linkages in the marketing channel (PHL9), and large number of intermediaries (PHL15). Why are some firms more environmentally proactive than their counterparts from the same industry? What are these factors, which are responsible for the adoption of proactive environmental strategies which are beyond the requirement of extant laws? The power sector is a critical sector for the development of infrastructure in a developing economy like India. The emissions from the power sector are a cause of concern for the environmentalists and stakeholders. Some firms are observed to be more environmentally proactive than others even though the regulatory requirements are same. This paper aims to identify the determinants of the adoption of proactive environmental strategies in the power sector in India. The available studies are generalised and very few are sector-specific. No such research is carried out specifically for the power sector in India. Statistical tools like SPSS (Statistical Programme for Social Science) and AMOS (Analysis of Moment Structures) are used to analyse the quantitative data collected through a questionnaire-based survey from major power sector companies. Reliability and validity of data collected are checked using Exploratory Factor Analysis. Subsequently, Confirmatory Factor Analysis is applied to identify the determinants of adoption of proactive environmental strategies. The identified determinants are ranked using Structural Equation Modelling. The study identifies institutional pressure, performance improvement, business practices, and market pressure and benefits as determinants. Institutional pressure and performance improvement emerge as determinants which are ranked higher as compared to other two. The specific contribution of the study is to provide an understanding for the policymakers in Indian power sector to recognise these determinants in the formulation of policies and guidelines for environmental protection. Research on the status of green buildings, their drivers and barriers have received significant attention, however little has been done to develop an integrated strategy that will lead to the development of green buildings. The present study is a conscious effort in that direction. On the basis of exhaustive literature review a ‘Green Building Sustainability Model’ has been developed and structural equation modelling is employed to verify the research framework. The study clearly state that the intentions to maintain green performance levels and adopt green practices has to come from all levels of society. The conceptual model establishes hypothesized relationship amongst nine constructs: issues, challenges, government, corporate, developers, buyers, private bodies, strategic-mix and sustainable development and develop twelve hypotheses. The data is collected by means of questionnaire survey method. The empirical results reveal that collaborative efforts of government and other stakeholders (corporate, developers, buyers, and private bodies) play a significant role in developing a strategic-mix that would lead to sustainable development however government as a regulatory body plays the most important role in developing the strategic-mix that will lead to resource efficient future. The contributions of the paper lies in developing an original Green Building Sustainability Model’ and fill the research gap. Though model has been developed and empirically tested in India, it can be further tested on green buildings in other developing or developed countries. The model is generic and can be further tested for commercial and residential green building. Numerous empirical and conceptual studies describe waste minimisation as a key environmental performance indicator for industry. ISO 14001certification in this regard is widely considered the tool of choice for driving waste minimisation efforts. To this day, however, the evidence remains mixed as it pertains to the effectiveness of ISO 14001 in helping firms reduce waste, especially in developing countries. This paper explores the waste minimisation efforts among Indian small and medium enterprises. Specifically, improvements in waste minimisation are analysed from small and medium enterprises operating in the cities of Delhi and Noida. Our proposed model is tested for a model-fit, and the hypotheses are tested through regression coefficient (β) scores to determine the influence of ISO 14001 on the degree of waste minimisation among certified and non-certified companies. The data reveal that ISO 14001 certification alone helped account for a 25% increase in waste minimisation in certified companies after controlling for other critical factors (correlated to the variable ‘waste minimisation’) that may influence this relationship. The analytical tools described in this paper lend themselves to be applied to similar research problems in future studies. The study provides baseline data for further research into ISO 14001 effectiveness in the Indian SME context – a field with still only limited research insights – and offers policy prompts for targeted environmental management improvements in Indian firms. The increasing nature of biomedical waste and its improper disposal has become a significant concern, resulting in a negative impact on the environment. These are associated with the direct consumption of input materials along with generated co-products and wastewater. This paper aims to address the environmental burden of existing biomedical waste management in the northern part of India. It also aims to suggest some constructive steps which result in a less impactful environment through the Life cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. LCA is a widely used sustainable assessment tool to evaluate the environmental performance of various waste management systems. The present study's functional unit is all the waste collected at a common treatment and disposal facility. A gate-to-gate approach has been performed based on the foreground data gathered from field surveys, semi-structured interviews, and background data of Eco invent database v1.03. The data has been further evaluated using LCA software SimaPro 9.1.0.4 utilizing the CML-IA impact assessment method. The impact categories include Abiotic Depletion (AD), Abiotic Depletion (fossil fuels) (ADF), Global Warming (GWP), Ozone Layer Depletion (OLD), Human Toxicity (HT), Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity (FAE), Marine Aquatic Ecotoxicity (MAE), Terrestrial Ecotoxicity (TE), Photochemical Oxidation (PO), Acidification (AF), and Eutrophication (EP). The results indicate that the integrated system, including incineration with energy recovery, autoclave-shredder, chemical disinfection, and Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), reduces the environmental burden compared to the present state. The reliability of the model is tested using sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. The analysis identifies the influential key processes, parameters, and impact categories. This paper suggests that LCA is a beneficial tool for the decision-makers and managers to take strategic decisions for reducing environmental burden and developing a life cycle inventory database for the developed economies. Substance flow analysis (SFA) provides a helpful tool for the study of the industrial metabolism of a certain substance within a regional level. This paper presents SFA of steel in four countries, namely Australia, Brazil, China and India. These countries are traditionally economically mineral dependent and are major contributors in global iron ore production. For example, in 2010 together these countries produced 81% of world iron ore. Based on the analysis it was found that Australian and Brazilian iron ore stocks will deplete rapidly while China and India are accumulating. This paper then presents a discussion on sustainability issues related to substance flows of steel stocks. The study is aimed at providing better understanding of stocks and flows and to inform the policy making for achieving the industrial metabolism and consequently leading to better management of resources and recycling of steel in the countries under study. This paper investigates household decision-making behaviour in the market for energy-efficient lighting and appliances in Delhi, India to study the energy efficiency gap using the inter-disciplinary framework of behavioural economics. A primary dataset of survey responses and choice experiments is analysed to test whether under-investment in energy-efficient technologies is explained by present-biased preferences. A ‘Multiple Price List’ set is employed to compute the standard discount factor, and the present bias and long-run component of a quasi-hyperbolic specification. Individuals who are more patient and less present-biased are found to be more likely to invest in certain energy-efficient appliances. As expected, time preferences are relevant for larger purchases such as refrigerators but lose some or all of their explanatory power for inexpensive purchases such as light bulbs. Our quantitative study contributes to the existing literature, which is limited to qualitatively identifying the (market failure) barriers for energy efficiency; inter alia , it tests for behavioural failures in individuals' decision-making towards the environment. In developing countries like India, very limited observatory stations are available to collect daily global solar radiation (GSR). This paper focuses to develop a common model for daily GSR estimation and standalone hybrid power system (HPS) design in view of six different climate locations in India. A new strategy is applied for finding the daily GSR model in Madurai location in Tamil Nadu, India. It is based on new parameter, which is named as 'approximate-bright sunshine duration' from the real-time measurement. The remaining six locations are estimated from the new model developed. In addition, to improve the accuracy of estimation, the developed linear one input variable model is further modified as two input variable model, based on the latitudes of six different climatic locations. The performances of developed one-input and two input models are analyzed using statistical indicators. The result shows that the developed two input variable model has provided excellent estimations for Madurai and also other six Indian climatic locations of latitudes ranging from 9°N to 13°N. This work also projects a detailed analysis of HPS design based on three meteorological data inputs to cover the residential energy demand. The NASA data, predicted ANFIS data (estimated data) and the measurement data are used in the analysis for the HPS feasibility and size optimization. The analysis shows that the hybrid configurations are same for all the locations, whereas PV and converter sizes are varied in the range of 47–52 kW and 23–27 kW, respectively. The Paris agreement stresses on concerted efforts to limit global temperature increase to 2 °C and make efforts towards achieving 1.5 °C temperature stabilization. Countries announced actions under the Nationally Determined Contributions outlining domestic mitigation actions to achieve the global target. Understanding the impact of these actions on achieving these ambitions requires an assessment of long term national level scenarios. Limited studies currently exist that model long term scenarios at national level addressing the impacts of Nationally Determined Contributions and the additional actions required, especially at the sectoral level. The paper compares four alternate future scenarios for India spanning till 2050, with a specific focus on the passenger and freight transportation. The analysis is performed using the ANSWER MARKAL model and complemented with methodologies to estimate transportation demand under strong decarbonisation pathways. The results show that 1.5 °C scenario would need immediate actions and deep transformations. Demand side actions would, in addition to infrastructure investments require transforming human behaviour through use of information technology, internet and sharing economy. Clean vehicle technologies need to play a much bigger role and fossil fuel dependence would be moderated with the dominance of electricity, hydrogen and biofuels. The higher share of electricity in transport is complimented with accelerated decarbonisation of electricity. Managing the transition to a low carbon economy is a complex challenge that needs both early wins and a longer-term alternate technologies leapfrog, to better supplement existing public policies. Relative to the significant investment and policy focus on renewable energy generation and Electric Vehicles (EV) - both globally and in India - Stationary Energy Storage systems (ESS) have received far lower investment and policy attention. This is an important issue to redress for two key reasons. Firstly, ESS is a key rate limiting constraint to achieve the desired benefits of further increasing the share of renewables in the energy generation mix, in India's case from the current 20–25% to a target 40%+ range by 2030. Secondly, several ESS applications are already/very nearly economically viable. Although the dominant discourse focuses on EVs, our analysis in this paper shows that there is a bigger near term opportunity in India for Stationary Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to replace diesel gensets for power backup. Interestingly India offers a meaningful level of scale for power-backup applications, for adoption directly by end-users. BESS as an alternative to Diesel Generator (DG) for power backup is economically viable in the Telecom sector and for roof-top solar installations; further non-subsidy levers e.g. differential tariffs and an annual cess on DG use, can drive economic viability in large campuses e.g. residential, schools and commercial buildings. These applications could offer a BESS demand ranging from 40 to 145 GWh over the next three years – which is more than the BESS demand estimates for EV segment of 40 GWh. Our study is verified and supported by experiential insights derived through primary research, personal interviews and hosting round-table discussions with relevant private and public policy experts. Large-scale tree planting has been advocated for decades in many countries as a cost-effective strategy to mitigate carbon, rejuvenate degraded landscapes, and support local livelihoods. Recent studies, however, suggest limited ecological and livelihood impacts of tree planting programs, indicating possible limits to tree planting as a natural climate solution. In this paper, we explore these carrying capacity-like limits by evaluating the site suitability of forestry landscapes of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh using theory/expert-based rules and machine learning algorithms. We find that the state can only achieve a maximum of 31.54% forest cover due to socio-ecological and biophysical constraints, much less than India's goal of bringing 66% of the total geographical area of Himalayan states into forest cover. The low availability of suitable lands for growing trees, together with poor plantation site selection by forest range officers limit the use of tree planting as a sole climate mitigation strategy. To approach theoretical planting limits, we propose an ePSA (e-Plantation Site Assistant) recommendation system based on our site-suitability results to assist forest rangers in selecting suitable sites for planting trees. An initial deployment of the recommender system suggests its potential utility in shaping the long-term success of tree plantations as an effective carbon strategy in northern India and beyond. Overall, we argue that there is a need to realign over-ambitious national and international tree planting targets with actual limits from site characteristics to avoid massive wastage of funds and to obtain feasible carbon mitigation outcomes. Electric vehicles have attracted the attention of India's policy makers as clean technology alternatives due to their multiple advantages like higher efficiency and lower air pollution in short to medium term and reduced CO 2 emissions as electricity gets decarbonized in the long-run under low carbon scenarios. This paper uses an energy system model ANSWER-MARKAL to analyse the role of electric vehicles (EV) in India. The modelling assessment spans the period 2010 to 2050 and analyses future EV demand in India under three scenarios: i) a ‘Reference’ scenario which includes the continuation of existing EV policies as outlined in India's Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC); ii) a ‘EV policy’ scenario which, in line with India's INDCs, follows targeted supply-side push policies for EVs, but without the budget constraints; and iii) a ‘low carbon’ scenario which uses an exogenous price for CO 2 in line with the global target of 2 °C temperature stabilization. The scenarios analysis delineates penetration of EVs and their co-benefits as well as co-costs. The co-benefits relate to local air quality, national energy security and CO 2 emissions in India whereas the co-costs (risks) are related to sourcing of raw materials for batteries and battery reprocessing and disposal. The findings show that: i) in the reference scenario, the EVs 2-wheelers will achieve a significant share by 2050. Electric 4-wheelers though would have a small share even in 2050; ii) EV push policies though lead to significant diffusion of electric 2- wheelers in India by 2030. These policies enhance diffusion of electric 4-wheelers only if financial incentives are sustained in the long-term, iii) the application of global carbon price on the Indian economy in the 2° C stabilization scenario increases competitiveness of EVs and results in near total share of electric 2-wheelers by 2030 and a sizable share of electric 4-wheelers by 2050. The high and rising carbon price in low carbon scenario cause deep decarbonisation of electricity and enables EVs to deliver deep cut in CO 2 emissions. The results show asymmetry in the impacts of national and global policies on co-benefits from EV. The EV supply-push policies deliver moderate benefits vis-à-vis air pollution and energy security indicators but make insignificant contribution CO 2 emissions reduction. On the other hand, the global carbon price in the global 2° C stabilization scenario delivers sizable co-benefits vis-à-vis all three indicators. This asymmetry reveal important policy insights: i) the policy sequencing is vital to gain co-benefits, ii) EV technology push policies are good for creating early domestic market for a clean vehicle technology but they may not deliver sizable co-benefits vis-à-vis CO 2 emissions which are global externalities, and iii) implementing strong climate policies early would lead to EVs delivering high co-benefits, in case of India, vis-à-vis all three indicators. Lack of access to electricity in rural areas hinders productive activities, which in turn affects sustainable rural development. Off-grid electrification options can offer an alternative but in order to develop productive uses of electricity in off-grid area, a detailed study of livelihoods and potential areas for improvement in the value chain is required. This paper reports such a study where a livelihood baseline survey was undertaken in a cluster of five remote off-grid villages in Dhenkanal district of Odisha (India) and through a series of interviews, focused group meetings and stakeholder interactions, the study finds that value-added services can be developed through an off-grid electrification intervention. Electrification can support productive activities, thereby offering an opportunity for improved income generation and a better quality of life and a transition to cleaner energy sources. The study provides a novel value chain framework for linking off-grid projects with local livelihoods replicable across multiple geographies ensuring sustainability of these projects. In order to be competitive, small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) should focus, not only towards their performance in operational dimension, but they need to integrate the environmental dimension through the balanced adoption of lean and green paradigms simultaneously. Prior research indicates the positive impact of integrated lean and green paradigms on a firm's performance and competitiveness. This paper applies an analytical hierarchy process approach to investigate the impact of select lean and green practices on performance benefits, and to evaluate the influence of lean and green paradigms on overall performance of SMEs. Total productive maintenance is identified as the most important lean practice, while ISO 14001is the most significant green practice. On-time delivery and a reduction in emissions are the most critical criteria for leanness and greenness, respectively. Based on the dynamic sensitivity analysis of three AHP models, we propose bundles of lean and green practices to surmount the market challenges faced by SMEs. These results are used to develop an integrated framework for lean-green system to guide SMEs towards sustainable growth. The findings are expected to benefit policy makers and industrial practitioners of SMEs to focus on a few vital issues to facilitate both lean and green manufacturing implementation and assessment. Strategy that targets pollution prevention shall be the first one among sustainability strategies to be implemented to achieve early cost advantages and mitigate litigation risk. This article aims to isolate pollution prevention strategy (PPS) from other similar sustainability strategies and provides an independent scope of PPS. A questionnaire based survey was conducted among 689 managers of 60 Indian firms known for their orientation towards sustainability. Factorial analysis delivered five factors highlighting the composition of associated variables. Descriptive statistics was used to understand the relative importance of various aspects of PPS and status of implementation of this strategy in Indian firms. The results show that firms are paying higher attention to structured waste management and the priority is early cost advantages hence prefer less investment prone processes modifications. The initiatives are geared mainly due to short term advantages than top management commitment and pro-activeness to comply with environmental regulations. Firms believe in developing expertise and deploying standard practices. It is evident that firms specifically train employees for PPS implantation, but lags in empowerment of employees, resources allocation, cross-functional team formations and rewards for the employees. Also, PPS strategy is implemented as stand-alone strategy and lacks the integration with core corporate strategy. The study adds to existing literature by segregating PPS from other similar strategies like product stewardship and cleaner technology. Tested measure of PPS shall help managers to assess their performance to achieve pollution prevention goals. Further, the paper discusses some important managerial implications. Over the last decade, most manufacturing organizations have been experiencing pressure to incorporate sustainability practices in their supply chains. The key reasons behind this pressure may be stated as increased consumer awareness towards environmental issues, stricter environmental laws and regulations, and increased competition. This paper seeks to identify the factors affecting sustainability adoption in the Indian automobile supply chain and investigate the inter-relationships existing among them. The factors have been identified on the basis of a comprehensive literature review and expert opinion. Data were collected through a survey of 157 Indian automobile companies; a carefully prepared questionnaire was used as research instrument. Partial least square (PLS) approach was used to investigate the relationships among various factors leading to sustainability performance. Results indicate that external influence and expected sustainability benefits positively affect top management's commitment towards adoption of sustainable practices. Further, it was found that a better buyer–supplier relationship positively impacted the triple bottom line of sustainability which comprises economic, social, and environmental performance measures. The buyer–supplier relationship was assessed after breaking it down to three constructs - supplier selection, supplier development and supplier performance review. This study is unique and carries a high originality value as it offers a better understanding of: 1) each construct (supplier selection, supplier development and supplier performance review) of the buyer–supplier relationship; and 2) every construct's effect on each dimension (economic, social and environmental) of supply chain sustainability of the Indian automobile industry. Such a comprehensive and detailed study involving the observation of each construct of the buyer–supplier relationship, and analysis of the effect that each construct has on the three dimensions of sustainability has not been carried out before. This way, the study makes a significant contribution to the existing body of literature. Rapid population growth and high rate of urbanization make municipal solid waste management a challenging task for municipalities due to the inadequacy of infrastructural services. Taking this into consideration, this paper proposes an approach for finding economically optimal locations and feasibility demonstration of a municipal solid waste management infrastructure unit, i.e. waste transfer stations. This analytical approach consists of two basic elements: ( i ) a mathematical model to optimize overall cost for municipal solid waste management; and ( ii ) geographical information system tools to create a data inventory for the mathematical model. The novelty of the proposed model includes heterogeneity in data compilation, on-road measurements of distances and strategic allocation of transfer stations. Also, to assess waste load estimation more precisely, analyzing the impacts of heterogeneity in data and on-road distances on model, three distinct cases have been considered. Further, the developed approach has been demonstrated on the city of Nashik, India. The mathematical model for Nashik city is written in a mathematical programming language AMPL and the solutions have been obtained using KNITRO solver. Optimization model selects three best locations out of eight potential locations with the optimum capacity of 200 TPD. Furthermore, the assessment of model's behavior under uncertainty has been performed with a comprehensive sensitivity analysis for further improvements. The integrity of all components in this study produces a generic framework for helping municipal officials and researchers for development of a municipal solid waste management system with transfer stations in an economically optimal manner.
