We consider the problem of communicating over a channel that randomly “tears” the message block into small pieces of different sizes and shuffles them. For the binary torn-paper channel with block length $n$ and pieces of length ${\mathrm{ Geometric}}(p_{n})$ , we characterize the capacity as $C = e^{-\alpha }$ , where $\alpha = \lim _{n\to \infty } p_{n} \log n$. Our results show that the case of ${\mathrm{ Geometric}}(p_{n})$ -length fragments and the case of deterministic length- $(1/p_{n})$ fragments are qualitatively different and, surprisingly, the capacity of the former is larger. Intuitively, this is due to the fact that, in the random fragments case, large fragments are sometimes observed, which boosts the capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we consider encoding strategies for the Z-channel with noiseless feedback. We analyze the combinatorial setting where the maximum number of errors inflicted by an adversary is proportional to the number of transmissions, which goes to infinity. Without feedback, it is known that the rate of optimal asymmetric-error-correcting codes for the error fraction $\tau \ge 1/4$ vanishes as the blocklength grows. In this paper, we give an efficient feedback encoding scheme with $n$ transmissions that achieves a positive rate for any fraction of errors $\tau < 1$ and $n\to \infty $. The number-theoretic code is a class of codes defined by single or multiple congruences. These codes are mainly used for correcting insertion and deletion errors, and for correcting asymmetric errors. This paper presents a formula for a generalization of the complete weight enumerator for the number-theoretic codes. This formula allows us to derive the weight enumerators and cardinalities for the number-theoretic codes. As a special case, this paper provides the Hamming weight enumerators and cardinalities of the non-binary Tenengolts’ codes, correcting single insertion or deletion. Linear codes achieving or nearly achieving the Singleton bound are interesting in both theory and practice. The objective of this paper is to construct several infinite families of MDS, near MDS and almost MDS codes from some special cyclic subgroups of ${\mathbb {F}}_{q^{2}}^{*}$. To this end, the augmentation and extension techniques are used. The codes in this paper have flexible parameters and their lengths could be large. The minimum linear locality of the codes constructed in this paper is also studied. Some infinite families of optimal linearly locally recoverable codes are obtained. A functional $k$ -batch code of dimension $s$ consists of $n$ servers storing linear combinations of $s$ linearly independent information bits. Any multiset request of size $k$ of linear combinations (or requests) of the information bits can be recovered by $k$ disjoint subsets of the servers. The goal under this paradigm is to find the minimum number of servers for given values of $s$ and $k$. A recent conjecture states that for any $k=2^{s-1}$ requests the optimal solution requires $2^{s}-1$ servers. This conjecture is verified for $s \leqslant 5$ but previous work could only show that codes with $n=2^{s}-1$ servers can support a solution for $k=2^{s-2} + 2^{s-4} + \left \lfloor{ \frac { 2^{s/2}}{\sqrt {24}} }\right \rfloor $ requests. This paper reduces this gap and shows the existence of codes for $k=\lfloor \frac {5}{6}2^{s-1} \rfloor - s$ requests with the same number of servers. Another construction in the paper provides a code with $n=2^{s+1}-2$ servers and $k=2^{s}$ requests, which is an optimal result. In general coding theory, we often assume that error is observed in transferring or storing encoded symbols, while the process of encoding itself is error-free. Motivated by recent applications of coding theory, in this paper, we consider the case where the process of encoding is distributed and prone to error. We introduce the problem of distributed encoding, comprised of a set of $K \in \mathbb {N}$ isolated source nodes and $N \in \mathbb {N}$ encoding nodes. Each source node has one symbol from a finite field, which is sent to each of the encoding nodes. Each encoding node stores an encoded symbol from the same field, as a function of the received symbols. However, some of the source nodes are controlled by the adversary and may send different symbols to different encoding nodes. Depending on the number of the adversarial nodes, denoted by $\beta \in \mathbb {N}$ , and the cardinality of the set of symbols that each one generates, denoted by $v \in \mathbb {N}$ , the process of decoding from the encoded symbols could be impossible. Assume that a decoder connects to an arbitrary subset of $t \in \mathbb {N}$ encoding nodes and wants to decode the symbols of the honest nodes correctly, without necessarily identifying the sets of honest and adversarial nodes. An important characteristic of a distributed encoding system is $t^{*} \in \mathbb {N}$ , the minimum of such $t$ , which is a function of $K$ , $N$ , $\beta $ , and $v$. In this paper, we study the distributed linear encoding system, i.e. one in which the encoding nodes use linear coding. We show that $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}=K+2\beta (v-1)$ , if $N\ge K+2\beta (v-1)$ , and $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}=N$ , if $N\le K+2\beta (v-1)$. In order to achieve $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}$ , we use random linear coding and show that in any feasible solution that the decoder finds, the messages of the honest nodes are decoded correctly. In order to prove the converse of the fundamental limit, we show that when the adversary behaves in a particular way, it can always confuse the decoder between two feasible solutions that differ in the message of at least one honest node. In this paper, we investigate the convergence speed of the Arimoto-Blahut algorithm. For many channel matrices, the convergence speed is exponential, but for some channel matrices it is slower than exponential. By analyzing the Taylor expansion of the defining function of the Arimoto-Blahut algorithm, we will make the conditions clear for the exponential or slower convergence. The analysis of the slow convergence in this paper is new. Based on this analysis, we will compare the convergence speeds of the Arimoto-Blahut algorithm numerically with the values obtained in our theorems for several channel matrices. It is known that there exist mathematical problems of practical relevance which cannot be computed on a Turing machine. An important example is the calculation of the first derivative of continuously differentiable functions. This paper precisely classifies the non-computability of the first derivative, and of the maximum-norm of the first derivative in the Zheng-Weihrauch hierarchy. Based on this classification, the paper investigates whether it is possible that a Turing machine detects this non-computability of the first derivative by observing the data of the problem, and whether it is possible to detect upper bounds for the peak value of the first derivative of continuously differentiable functions. So from a practical point of view, the question is whether it is possible to implement an exit-flag functionality for observing non-computability of the first derivative. This paper even studies two different types of exit-flag functionality. A strong one, where the Turing machine always has to stop, and a weak one, where the Turing machine stops if and only if the input lies within the corresponding set of interest. It will be shown that non-computability of the first derivative is not detectable by a Turing machine for two concrete examples, namely for the problem of computing the input–output behavior of simple analog circuits and for solutions of the three-dimensional wave equation. In addition, it is shown that it is even impossible to detect an upper bound for the maximum norm of the first derivative. In particular, it is shown that all three problems are not even semidecidable. Finally, we briefly discuss implications of these results for analog and quantum computing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantum readout provides a general framework for formulating statistical discrimination of quantum channels. Several paths have been taken for such this problem. However, there is much to be done in the avenue of optimizing channel discrimination using classical codes. At least two open questions can be pointed out: how to construct low complexity encoding schemes that are interesting for channel discrimination and, more importantly, how to develop capacity-achieving protocols. This paper aims at presenting a solution to these questions using polar codes. Firstly, we characterize the information rate and reliability parameter of the channels under polar encoding. We also show that the error probability of the scheme proposed decays exponentially with the square root of the code length. Coded caching is a promising technique to smooth out network traffic by storing part of the library content at the users’ local caches. The seminal work on coded caching for single file retrieval by Maddah-Ali and Niesen (MAN) showed the existence of a global caching gain that scales with the total memory in the system, in addition to the known local caching gain in uncoded systems. This paper formulates a novel cache-aided matrix multiplication retrieval problem, relevant for data analytics and machine learning applications. In the considered problem, each cache-aided user requests the product of two matrices from the library. A structure-agnostic solution is to treat each possible matrix product as an independent file and use the MAN coded caching scheme for single file retrieval. This paper proposes two structure-aware schemes, which partition each matrix in the library by either rows or columns and let a subset of users cache some sub-matrices, that improve on the structure-agnostic scheme. For the case where the library matrices are “fat” matrices, the structure-aware row-partition scheme is shown to be order optimal under some constraint. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A common method for reading information stored in DNA molecules is shotgun sequencing. This method outputs a histogram of the frequencies of all the molecules’ substrings of a given length $\ell $. To protect against noisy readings, the rank-modulation scheme encodes the information in the relative ranking of the substring frequencies, instead of their absolute values. However, the best rank-modulation codes for shotgun sequencing have low rates which are asymptotically vanishing. In this paper we propose new constructions of rank-modulation codes for shotgun sequencing. The first code construction is systematic, allowing the user to arbitrarily set the frequencies of a large subset of the substrings, which the encoder then completes to a permutation that may be realized by a DNA molecule. The construction is then improved by allowing the user to set the frequencies of additional substrings, at the cost of imposing constraints on the frequencies. The resulting codes have higher, non-vanishing rates, compared with previously known codes. As an example, for histograms of substrings of length $\ell =2$ , and an alphabet of size 4 (as in DNA molecules), we are able to construct a code with rate $\approx 0.909$ , whereas previously, the best construction resulted in a code with rate $\approx 0.654$. Additionally, the encoded information in our construction may be written to shorter DNA molecules than possible before. As an algorithmic framework, message passing is extremely powerful and has wide applications in the context of different disciplines including communications, coding theory, statistics, signal processing, artificial intelligence and combinatorial optimization. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a message-passing algorithm called min-sum belief propagation (BP) for the vertex-disjoint shortest $k$ -path problem ($k$ -VDSP) on weighted directed graphs, and derive the iterative message-passing update rules. As the main result of this paper, we prove that for a weighted directed graph $G$ of order $n$ , BP algorithm converges to the unique optimal solution of $k$ -VDSP on $G$ within $O(n^{2}w_{max})$ iterations, provided that the weight $w_{e}$ is nonnegative integral for each arc $e\in E(G)$ , where $w_{max}=\max \{w_{e}: e\in E(G)\}$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first instance where BP algorithm is proved correct for NP-hard problems. The Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes are a well-studied subclass of cyclic codes that have found numerous applications in error correction and notably in quantum information processing. They are widely used in data storage and communication systems. A subclass of attractive BCH codes is the narrow-sense BCH codes over the Galois field ${\mathrm {GF}}(q)$ with length $q+1$ , which are closely related to the action of the projective general linear group of degree two on the projective line. Despite its interest, not much is known about this class of BCH codes. This paper aims to study some of the codes within this class and specifically narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH codes (these codes are also linear complementary duals (LCD) codes that have interesting practical recent applications in cryptography, among other benefits). We shall use tools and combine arguments from algebraic coding theory, combinatorial designs, and group theory (group actions, representation theory of finite groups, etc.) to investigate narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH Codes and extend results from the recent literature. Notably, the dimension, the minimum distance of some $q$ -ary BCH codes with length $q+1$ , and their duals are determined in this paper. The dual codes of the narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH codes derived in this paper include almost MDS codes. Furthermore, the classification of ${\mathrm {PGL}}(2, p^{m})$ -invariant codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(p^{h})$ is completed. As an application of this result, the $p$ -ranks of all incidence structures invariant under the projective general linear group ${\mathrm {PGL}}(2, p^{m})$ are determined. Furthermore, infinite families of narrow-sense BCH codes admitting a 3-transitive automorphism group are obtained. Via these BCH codes, a coding-theory approach to constructing the Witt spherical geometry designs is presented. This paper considers a massive random access problem in which a large number of sporadically active devices wish to communicate with a base station (BS) equipped with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas. Each device is preassigned a unique signature sequence, and the BS identifies the active devices by detecting which sequences are transmitted. This device activity detection problem can be formulated as a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) problem for which the sample covariance matrix of the received signal is a sufficient statistic. The goal of this paper is to characterize the feasible set of problem parameters under which this covariance based approach is able to successfully recover the device activities in the massive MIMO regime. Through an analysis of the asymptotic behaviors of MLE via its associated Fisher information matrix, this paper derives a necessary and sufficient condition on the Fisher information matrix to ensure a vanishing probability of detection error as the number of antennas goes to infinity, based on which a numerical phase transition analysis is obtained. This condition is also examined from a perspective of covariance matching, which relates the phase transition analysis to a recently derived scaling law. Further, we provide a characterization of the distribution of the estimation error in MLE, based on which the error probabilities in device activity detection can be accurately predicted. This paper formulates a distributed computation problem, where a master asks ${\mathsf N}$ distributed workers to compute a linearly separable function. The task function can be expressed as ${\mathsf K}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ linear combinations of ${\mathsf K}$ messages, where each message is a function of one dataset. Our objective is to find the optimal tradeoff between the computation cost (number of uncoded datasets assigned to each worker) and the communication cost (number of symbols the master must download), such that from the answers of any ${\mathsf N}_{\mathrm{ r}}$ out of ${\mathsf N}$ workers the master can recover the task function with high probability, where the coefficients of the ${\mathsf K}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ linear combinations are uniformly i.i.d. over some large enough finite field. The formulated problem can be seen as a generalized version of some existing problems, such as distributed gradient coding and distributed linear transform. In this paper, we consider the specific case where the computation cost is minimum, and propose novel achievability schemes and converse bounds for the optimal communication cost. Achievability and converse bounds coincide for some system parameters; when they do not match, we prove that the achievable distributed computing scheme is optimal under the constraint of a widely used ‘cyclic assignment’ scheme on the datasets. Our results also show that when ${\mathsf K}= {\mathsf N}$ , with the same communication cost as the optimal distributed gradient coding scheme proposed by Tandon et al. from which the master recovers one linear combination of ${\mathsf K}$ messages, our proposed scheme can let the master recover any additional ${\mathsf N}_{\mathrm{ r}}-1$ independent linear combinations of messages with high probability. We revisit and take a closer look at a (not so well known) result of a 2017 paper, showing that the differential uniformity of any vectorial function is bounded from below by an expression depending on the size of its image set. We make explicit the resulting tight lower bound on the image set size of differentially $\delta $ -uniform functions (which is the only currently known non-trivial lower bound on the image set size of such functions). We also significantly improve an upper bound on the nonlinearity of vectorial functions obtained in the same reference and involving their image set size. We study when the resulting bound is sharper than the covering radius bound. We obtain as a by-product a lower bound on the Hamming distance between differentially $\delta $ -uniform functions and affine functions, which we improve significantly with a second bound. This leads us to study what can be the maximum Hamming distance between vectorial functions and affine functions. We provide an upper bound which is slightly sharper than a bound by Liu, Mesnager and Chen when $m < n$ , and a second upper bound, which is much stronger in the case (happening in practice) where $m$ is near $n$ ; we study the tightness of this latter bound; this leads to an interesting question on APN functions, which we address (negatively). We finally derive an upper bound on the nonlinearity of vectorial functions by means of their Hamming distance to affine functions and make more precise the bound on the differential uniformity which was the starting point of the paper. Consider a massive random access scenario in which a small set of $k$ active users out of a large number of $n$ potential users need to be scheduled in $b\ge k$ slots. What is the minimum common feedback to the users needed to ensure that scheduling is collision-free? Instead of a naive scheme of listing the indices of the $k$ active users in the order in which they should transmit, at a cost of $k\log (n)$ bits, this paper shows that for the case of $b=k$ , the rate of the minimum fixed-length common feedback code scales only as $k \log (e)$ bits, plus an additive term that scales in $n$ as $\Theta (\log \log (n))$ for fixed $k$. If a variable-length code can be used, assuming uniform activity among the users, the minimum average common feedback rate still requires $k \log (e)$ bits, but the dependence on $n$ can be reduced to $O(1)$. When $b>k$ , the number of feedback bits needed for collision-free scheduling can be significantly further reduced. Moreover, a similar scaling on the minimum feedback rate is derived for the case of scheduling $m$ users per slot, when $k \le mb$. The problem of constructing a minimum collision-free feedback scheduling code is connected to that of constructing a perfect hashing family, which allows practical feedback scheduling codes to be constructed from perfect hashing algorithms. Uplink-downlink duality refers to the fact that under a sum-power constraint, the capacity regions of a Gaussian multiple-access channel and a Gaussian broadcast channel with Hermitian transposed channel matrices are identical. This paper generalizes this result to a cooperative cellular network, in which remote access-points are deployed as relays in serving the users under the coordination of a central processor (CP). In this model, the users and the relays are connected over noisy wireless links, while the relays and the CP are connected over noiseless but rate-limited fronthaul links. Based on a Lagrangian technique, this paper establishes a duality relationship between such a multiple-access relay channel and broadcast relay channel, under the assumption that the relays use compression-based strategies. Specifically, we show that under the same total transmit power constraint and individual fronthaul rate constraints, the achievable rate regions of the Gaussian multiple-access and broadcast relay channels are identical, when either independent compression or Wyner-Ziv and multivariate compression strategies are used. The key observations are that if the beamforming vectors at the relays are fixed, the sum-power minimization problems under the achievable rate and fronthaul constraints in both the uplink and the downlink can be transformed into either a linear programming or a semidefinite programming problem depending on the compression technique, and that the uplink and downlink problems are Lagrangian duals of each other. Moreover, the dual variables corresponding to the downlink rate constraints become the uplink powers; the dual variables corresponding to the downlink fronthaul constraints become the uplink quantization noises. Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity are important cryptographic primitives in some stream ciphers. In this paper, two methodologies for constructing minimal binary codes from sets, Boolean functions and vectorial Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity, are proposed. More precisely, a general construction of new minimal codes using minimal codes contained in Reed-Muller codes and sets without nonzero low degree annihilators is presented. The other construction allows us to yield minimal codes from certain subcodes of Reed-Muller codes and vectorial Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity. Via these general constructions, infinite families of minimal binary linear codes of dimension $m$ and length less than or equal to $m(m+1)/2$ are obtained. Besides, a lower bound on the minimum distance of the proposed minimal linear codes is established. Conjectures and open problems are also presented. The results of this paper show that Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity have nice applications in several fields additionally to symmetric cryptography, such as coding theory and secret sharing schemes. The nondispersive per-sample channel model for the optical fiber channel is considered. Under certain smoothness assumptions, the problem of finding the minimum amount of noise energy that can render two different input points indistinguishable is formulated. This minimum noise energy is then taken as a measure of distance between the points in the input alphabet. Using the machinery of optimal control theory, necessary conditions that describe the minimum-energy noise trajectories are stated as a system of nonlinear differential equations. It is shown how to find the distance between two input points by solving this system of differential equations. The problem of designing signal constellations with the largest minimum distance subject to a peak power constraint is formulated as a clique-finding problem. As an example, a 16-point constellation is designed and compared with conventional quadrature amplitude modulation. A computationally efficient approximation for the proposed distance measure is provided. It is shown how to use this approximation to design large constellations with large minimum distances. Orthogonal/vector approximate message-passing (AMP) is a powerful message-passing (MP) algorithm for signal reconstruction in compressed sensing. This paper proves the convergence of Bayes-optimal orthogonal/vector AMP in the large system limit. The proof strategy is based on a novel long-memory (LM) MP approach: A first step is a construction of LM-MP that is guaranteed to converge systematically. A second step is a large-system analysis of LM-MP via an existing framework of state evolution. A third step is to prove the convergence of state evolution recursions for Bayes-optimal LM-MP via a new statistical interpretation of existing LM damping. The last is an exact reduction of the state evolution recursions for Bayes-optimal LM-MP to those for Bayes-optimal orthogonal/vector AMP. The convergence of the state evolution recursions for Bayes-optimal LM-MP implies that for Bayes-optimal orthogonal/vector AMP. Numerical simulations are presented to show the verification of state evolution results for damped orthogonal/vector AMP and a negative aspect of LM-MP in finite-sized systems. Approximate message passing (AMP) is a low-cost iterative parameter-estimation technique for certain high-dimensional linear systems with non-Gaussian distributions. AMP only applies to independent identically distributed (IID) transform matrices, but may become unreliable (e.g., perform poorly or even diverge) for other matrix ensembles, especially for ill-conditioned ones. To solve this issue, orthogonal/vector AMP (OAMP/VAMP) was proposed for general right-unitarily-invariant matrices. However, the Bayes-optimal OAMP/VAMP (BO-OAMP/VAMP) requires a high-complexity linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimator. This prevents OAMP/VAMP from being used in large-scale systems. To address the drawbacks of AMP and BO-OAMP/VAMP, this paper offers a memory AMP (MAMP) framework based on the orthogonality principle, which ensures that estimation errors in MAMP are asymptotically IID Gaussian. To realize the required orthogonality for MAMP, we provide an orthogonalization procedure for the local memory estimators. In addition, we propose a Bayes-optimal MAMP (BO-MAMP), in which a long-memory matched filter is used for interference suppression. The complexity of BO-MAMP is comparable to AMP. To asymptotically characterize the performance of BO-MAMP, a state evolution is derived. The relaxation parameters and damping vector in BO-MAMP are optimized based on state evolution. In its most elementary form, compressed sensing studies the design of decoding algorithms to recover a sufficiently sparse vector or code from a lower dimensional linear measurement vector. Typically it is assumed that the decoder has access to the encoder matrix, which in the combinatorial case is sparse and binary. In this paper we consider the problem of designing a decoder to recover a set of sparse codes from their linear measurements alone, that is without access to encoder matrix. To this end we study the matrix factorisation task of recovering both the encoder and sparse coding matrices from the associated linear measurement matrix. The contribution of this paper is a computationally efficient decoding algorithm, Decoder-Expander Based Factorisation, with strong performance guarantees. Under mild assumptions on the sparse coding matrix and by deploying a novel random encoder matrix, we prove that Decoder-Expander Based Factorisation recovers both the encoder and sparse coding matrix at the optimal measurement rate with high probability and from a near optimal number of measurement vectors. In addition, our experiments demonstrate the efficacy and computational efficiency of our algorithm in practice. Beyond compressed sensing, our results may be of interest for researchers working in areas as diverse as linear sketching, coding theory, matrix compression and dictionary learning. This paper studies low-latency streaming codes for the multi-hop network. The source transmits a sequence of messages to a destination through a chain of relays, and requires the destination to reconstruct each message by its deadline. We assume that each communication link is subjected to a certain maximum number of packet erasures. The case of a single relay (a three-node network) was considered in Fong et al. (2020). A coding scheme known as symbol-wise decode and forward was proposed. In the present work, we propose an alternative scheme that is different from Fong et al. (2020) and still achieves the same rate as in Fong et al. (2020) for the one hop case as the field-size goes to infinity. Furthermore, our proposed scheme naturally generalizes to the case of multiple-relay nodes yielding new achievable rates for this setting. The main difference with Fong et al. (2020) is that our proposed scheme exploits the ability of the relay nodes to adapt the transmission based on the erasures on the previous link. Hence, we refer to our scheme as “state-dependent” and contrast it with the scheme in Fong et al. (2020) that is state-independent. Our scheme requires the relay nodes to append a header to the transmitted packets, and we show that the size of the header does not depend on the field-size of the code. We also derive an upper bound on the maximal streaming rate achievable over a network with an arbitrary number of relays. We show that this upper bound matches our achievable rate in the special case when the maximal number of erasures on the first link is greater than or equal to the maximal number of erasures on each of the following links, and the field size goes to infinity. In this paper, we consider variable-length coding over the memoryless binary asymmetric channel (BAC) with full noiseless feedback, including the binary symmetric channel (BSC) as a special case. In 2012, Naghshvar et al. introduced a coding scheme, which we refer to as the small-enough-difference (SED) coding scheme. For symmetric binary-input channels, the deterministic variable-length feedback (VLF) code constructed with the SED coding scheme asymptotically achieves both capacity and Burnashev’s optimal error exponent. Building on the work of Naghshvar et al., this paper extends the SED coding scheme to the BAC and develops a non-asymptotic VLF achievability bound that is shown to achieve both capacity and the optimal error exponent. For the specific case of the BSC, we develop an additional non-asymptotic VLF achievability bound using a two-phase analysis that leverages both a submartingale synthesis and a Markov chain time of first passage analysis. Speckle or multiplicative noise is a critical issue in coherence-based imaging systems, such as synthetic aperture radar and optical coherence tomography. Existence of speckle noise considerably limits the applicability of such systems by degrading their performance. On the other hand, the sophistications that arise in the study of multiplicative noise have so far impeded theoretical analysis of such imaging systems. As a result, the current acquisition technology relies on heuristic solutions, such as oversampling the signal and converting the problem into a denoising problem with multiplicative noise. This paper attempts to bridge the gap between theory and practice by providing the first theoretical analysis of such systems. To achieve this goal the log-likelihood function corresponding to measurement systems with speckle noise is characterized. Then employing compression codes to model the source structure, for the case of under-sampled measurements, a compression-based maximum likelihood recovery method is proposed. The mean squared error (MSE) performance of the proposed method is characterized and is shown to scale as $O\left({\sqrt {\frac{k \log n }{ m}}}\right)$ , where $k$ , $m$ and $n$ denote the intrinsic dimension of the signal class according to the compression code, the number of observations, and the ambient dimension of the signal, respectively. This result, while in contrast to imaging systems with additive noise in which MSE scales as $O\left({{\frac{k \log n }{ m}}}\right)$ , suggests that if the signal class is structured (i.e., $k \ll n$), accurate recovery of a signal from under-determined measurements is still feasible, even in the presence of speckle noise. Simulation results are presented that suggest image recovery under multiplicative noise is inherently more challenging than additive noise, and that the derived theoretical results are sharp. In this paper, we analyze the generalization performance of the Iterative Hard Thresholding (IHT) algorithm widely used for sparse recovery problems. The parameter estimation and sparsity recovery consistency of IHT has long been known in compressed sensing. From the perspective of statistical learning, another fundamental question is how well the IHT estimation would predict on unseen data. This paper makes progress towards answering this open question by introducing a novel sparse generalization theory for IHT under the notion of algorithmic stability. Our theory reveals that: 1) under natural conditions on the empirical risk function over $n$ samples of dimension $p$ , IHT with sparsity level $k$ enjoys an $\tilde {\mathcal {O}}(n^{-1/2}\sqrt {k\log (n)\log (p)})$ rate of convergence in sparse excess risk; 2) a tighter $\tilde {\mathcal {O}}(n^{-1/2}\sqrt {\log (n)})$ bound can be established by imposing an additional iteration stability condition on a hypothetical IHT procedure invoked to the population risk; and 3) a fast rate of order $\tilde {\mathcal {O}}\left ({n^{-1}k(\log ^{3}(n)+\log (p))}\right)$ can be derived for strongly convex risk function under proper strong-signal conditions. The results have been substantialized to sparse linear regression and sparse logistic regression models to demonstrate the applicability of our theory. In the coded caching problem, as originally formulated by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, a server communicates via a noiseless shared broadcast link to multiple users that have local storage capability. In order for a user to decode its demanded file from the coded multicast transmission, the demands of all the users must be globally known, which may violate the privacy of the users. To overcome this privacy problem, Wan and Caire recently proposed several schemes that attain coded multicasting gain while simultaneously guarantee information theoretic privacy of the users’ demands. In Device-to-Device (D2D) networks, the demand privacy problem is further exacerbated by the fact that each user is also a transmitter, which appears to be needing the knowledge of the files demanded by the remaining users in order to form its coded multicast transmission. This paper shows how to solve this seemingly infeasible problem. The main contribution of this paper is the development of new achievable and converse bounds for D2D coded caching that are to within a constant factor of one another when privacy of the users’ demands must be guaranteed even in the presence of colluding users (i.e., when some users share cached contents and demanded file indices). First, a D2D private caching scheme is proposed, whose key feature is the addition of virtual users in the system in order to “hide” the demands of the real users. By comparing the achievable D2D private load with an existing converse bound for the shared-link model without demand privacy constraint, the proposed scheme is shown to be order optimal, except for the very low memory size regime with more files than users. Second, in order to shed light into the open parameter regime, a new achievable scheme and a new converse bound under the constraint of uncoded cache placement (i.e., when each user stores directly a subset of the bits of the library) are developed for the case of two users, and shown to be to within a constant factor of one another for all system parameters. Finally, the two-user converse bound is extended to any number of users by a cut-set type argument. With this new converse bound, the virtual users scheme is shown to be order optimal in all parameter regimes under the constraint of uncoded cache placement and user collusion. It is well known that for Gaussian channels, a nearest neighbor decoding rule, which seeks the minimum Euclidean distance between a codeword and the received channel output vector, is the maximum likelihood solution and hence capacity-achieving. Nearest neighbor decoding remains a convenient and yet mismatched solution for general channels, and the key message of this paper is that the performance of nearest neighbor decoding can be improved by generalizing its decoding metric to incorporate channel state dependent output processing and codeword scaling. Using generalized mutual information, which is a lower bound to the mismatched capacity under independent and identically distributed codebook ensemble, as the performance measure, this paper establishes the optimal generalized nearest neighbor decoding rule, under Gaussian channel input. Several restricted forms of the generalized nearest neighbor decoding rule are also derived and compared with existing solutions. ChaCha has been one of the most prominent ARX designs of the last few years because of its use in several systems. The cryptanalysis of ChaCha involves a differential attack that exploits the idea of Probabilistic Neutral Bits (PNBs). For a long period, the single-bit distinguisher in this differential attack was found up to 3rd round. At Crypto 2020, Beierle et al. introduced for the first time the single bit distinguishers for 3.5th round, which contributed significantly to regaining the flow of the research work in this direction. This discovery became the primary factor behind the huge improvement in the key recovery attack complexity in that work. This was followed by another work at Eurocrypt 2021, where a single bit distinguisher at 3.5th round helped to produce a 7th round distinguisher of ChaCha and a further improvement in the key recovery. In this paper, first, we provide the theoretical framework for the distinguisher given by Beierle et al. We mathematically derive the observed differential correlation for the particular position where the output difference is observed at 3.5th round. Also, Beierle et al. mentioned the issue of the availability of proper IVs to produce such distinguishers, and pointed out that not all keys have such IVs available. Here we provide a theoretical insight of this issue. Next, we revisit the work of Coutinho et al. (Eurocrypt 2021). Using Differential-Linear attacks against ChaCha, they claimed the distinguisher and the key recovery with complexities 2218 and $2^{228.51}$ respectively. We show that the differential correlation for the 3.5th round is much smaller than the claim of Coutinho et al. This makes the attack complexities much higher than their claim. This paper presents a unifying framework to construct low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with associated Tanner graphs of desired girth. Towards this goal, we highlight the role that a certain square matrix that appears in the product of the parity-check matrix with its transpose has in the construction of codes with graphs of desired girth and further explore it in order to generate the set of necessary and sufficient conditions for a Tanner graph to have a given girth between 6 and 12. For each such girth, we present algorithms to construct codes of the desired girth and we show how to use them to compute the minimum necessary value of the lifting factor. For girth larger than 12, we show how to use multi-step graph lifting methods to deterministically modify codes in order to increase their girth. We also give a new perspective on LDPC protograph-based parity-check matrices by viewing them as rows of a parity-check matrix equal to the sum of certain permutation matrices and obtain an important connection between all protographs and those with variable nodes of degree 2. We also show that the results and methodology that we develop for the all-one protograph can be used and adapted to analyze the girth of the Tanner graph of any parity-check matrix and demonstrate how this can be done using a well-known irregular, multi-edge protograph specified by the NASA Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS). Throughout the paper, we exemplify our theoretical results with constructions of LDPC codes with Tanner graphs of any girth between 6 and 14 and give sufficient conditions for a multi-step lifted parity-check matrix to have girth between 14 and 22. In contrast to their seemingly simple and shared structure of independence and stationarity, Lévy processes exhibit a wide variety of behaviors, from the self-similar Wiener process to piecewise-constant compound Poisson processes. Inspired by the recent paper of Ghourchian, Amini, and Gohari, we characterize their compressibility by studying the entropy of their double discretization (both in time and amplitude) in the regime of vanishing discretization steps. For a Lévy process with absolutely continuous marginals, this reduces to understanding the asymptotics of the differential entropy of its marginals at small times, for which we obtain a new local central limit theorem. We generalize known results for stable processes to the non-stable case, with a special focus on Lévy processes that are locally self-similar, and conceptualize a new compressibility hierarchy of Lévy processes, captured by their Blumenthal–Getoor index. In this paper, we consider a status updating system where updates are generated at a constant rate at $K$ sources and sent to the corresponding recipients through a noise-free broadcast channel. We assume that perfect channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter before each transmission, and the transmitter is able to utilize the CSI to precode the updates. Our object is to design optimal precoding schemes to minimize the summed average age of information (AoI) at the recipients. Under various assumptions on the size of each update $B$ , the number of transmit antennas $M$ , and the number of receive antennas $N$ at each user, this paper identifies the corresponding age-optimal precoding and transmission scheduling strategies. Specifically, for the case when $N=1$ , a round-robin based updating scheme is shown to be optimal. In 1991, Wei proved a duality theorem that established an interesting connection between the generalized Hamming weights of a linear code and those of its dual code. Wei’s duality theorem has since been extensively studied from different perspectives and extended to other settings. In this paper, we re-examine Wei’s duality theorem and its various extensions, henceforth referred to as Wei-type duality theorems, from a new Galois connection perspective. Our approach is based on the observation that the generalized Hamming weights and the dimension/length profiles of a linear code form a Galois connection. The central result of this paper is a general Wei-type duality theorem for two Galois connections between finite subsets of $\mathbb {Z}$ , from which all the known Wei-type duality theorems can be recovered. As corollaries of our central result, we prove new Wei-type duality theorems for $w$ -demi-matroids defined over finite sets and $w$ -demi-polymatroids defined over modules with a composition series, which further allows us to unify and generalize all the known Wei-type duality theorems established for codes endowed with various metrics.
