- Abstract
This collection of papers covers subjects from obstacles women face due to cultural understandings to the thoughts of prominent philosophers on certain issues related to the diverse aspects of gender distinction. Taking up a variety of topics related to the problem of discrimination against women, the papers implicate the woman question as a “question for humanity.” Accordingly, the author argues that, to grasp discrimination against women as a problem for humanity is not only critical for the over-all well-being, but more importantly, is inescapable for an adequate conceptualization of the human and hence of human rights.

- Arabic language--Dialects--Congresses
- Abstract
The necessity of studying Arabic dialects has attracted more attention in the recent years. Qatar University chose to support the growing academic interest and research in the field by hosting the Association Internationale de Dialectologie Arabe (AIDA) conference on 11 - 13 November 2013. The AIDA10 conference and the tenth volume of AIDA proceedings show that a good deal of change and development in the field is occurring. Fewer papers deal on hitherto unknown dialects as the white spots on the map of Arabic dialects have significantly shrunk. More papers focus on syntactical issues because we now possess more and larger text collections. Papers using'change'in their titles indicate that Arabic dialectology has a long history. Perhaps the time has come to re-examine the studies of the 1940s, 50s and 60s concerning the dialects of certain regions.

- Abstract
What are the connections between the polity of the church and church unity - or division? Does the polity of churches serve or obstruct the missional nature of the church? These questions were the focus of the Third Conference of the International Protestant Church Polity Study Group (IPCPSG), held in Princeton, New Jersey in April 2016. The authors of the essays in this volume probe these questions from a variety of angles. The conference intended to model close attention to and reflection on the theological import and value of church order and polity. Attendees of the conference came from churches and denominations in the Reformed tradition, gathering from across the United States and around the world. They included scholars of church order and polity, and practitioners with depth of knowledge and experience gained through the exercise of polity in a variety of settings and contexts. Conference papers, discussions, and informal conversations turned from theological reflection to practice and back.

- Abstract
This volume is the documentation of a workshop at the'Dietrich Bonhoeffer Centre for Public Theology'in Kigali, that took place in February 2018 and discussed what can be gained from Bonhoeffer's theology for contextual theologies in Africa as well as in Europe. The core feature of the workshop in February 2018 was a competition in which students from Butare/Huye presented the findings of their examination of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's life and work. The prize-winning contributions are documented in this volume. Papers from the European perspective were contributed by doctoral candidates and students of the Ruhr University Bochum, and the chairing and commentary of the event was shared amongst Dr Clemens Wustmans (Berlin), Dr Christine Schliesser (Bern), the President of the Presbyterian Church in Rwanda, Dr Pascal Bataringaya (Kigali), the Dean of the Theological Faculty of the Protestant Institut of Arts and Social Sciences, Olivier Munyansanga, Ph.D. (Huye/Rwanda), and Prof. Dr Traugott Jähnichen (Bochum).

- Abstract
Volume 17/18 begins with a section containing original Huxley documents: Below the Equator, an unpublished film story collaboration by Isherwood and Huxley, edited by James Sexton and Bernfried Nugel, to be followed by two pieces rediscovered and edited by James Sexton, viz. The Heroes, William R. Cox's screenplay adaptation of a lost Huxley story, and the translation of a 1960 interview held in French by the Canadian writer Hubert Aquin. Then Huxley nephew Piero Ferrucci kindly opens his family archives of original Huxley letters and photographs and contributes a remarkable essay on his coming of age with Aldous Huxley. Rounding off this section, Peter Wood introduces an unknown 1934 letter Huxley wrote to Ren'e Schickele, a forgotten German author in the writers'community at Sanary. The second section presents a further selection of papers from the Sixth International Aldous Huxley Symposium held at Almer'a in April 2017 as well as other critical articles.

- Abstract
During the 1970s the todays Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung, BMBWF) supported the founding of the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and the Austrian Chair at Stanford University in California. These foundings were the initial incentives for the world wide'spreading'of similar institutions; currently nine Centers for Austrian and Central European Studies exist in seven states on three continents. The funding of the Ministry enables to connect senior with young scholars, to help the latter, to participate and benefit from the scientific connection of the former, as the Austrian say, `to sniff the scientific air', and to get in touch with the respective national scientific community, to avoid prejudices, and to spread a better understanding and knowledge about Austria and Central Europe. This volume contains the annual reports (2016/2017) of the Center Director's and the presented papers of their PhDs, which discuss various topics on (East-)Central European History from various perspectives and in different centuries.

This volume provides a record of the response, by eight expert scholars in the field of medieval monastic studies, to the question'To what extent did abbots and abbesses contribute as a `human resource'to the development of reformed monastic communities in the ninth- to twelfth-century west?'Covering a broad geographical area, papers consider one or several of three key points of interest: the direct contribution of abbots and abbesses to the shaping of reformed realities; their influence over future modes of leadership; and the way in which later generations of monastics relied upon the memory of a leader's life and achievements to project current realities onto a legitimizing past.

- Abstract
Crossing boundaries is a key issue in EFL teaching and Postcolonial Studies. It is an objective not only for the foreign language classroom that is facing increasingly global influences in terms of more heterogeneous societies, but also with a view to the growing heterogeneity in the literature, media and materials used in teaching and research. Because the intersections between Postcolonial Studies and TEFL are not only manifold but also highly significant, this volume brings together papers that explore, perform and theorize various kinds of crossovers, be they disciplinary, thematic or intermedial ones.

This book provides Pentecostals with the necessary equipment and motivation to contribute to one of Africa's important ethical challenges, LGBTIQ+ people and Africa's homophobic reaction to them. The study is aimed at Christian believers and pastors, to empower them with relevant information about the issue. The issue is discussed in terms of existing biological, psychological, anthropological, sociological, philosophical and queer theory knowledge, along with a study of the biblical texts, in order to answer the question, what should a responsible African Pentecostal response be towards the LGBTIQ+ issue, and what should Pentecostals'attitude be towards such people?

- Abstract
The relatively peaceful interreligious relations in Indonesia seem to be shattered ever since Suharto's fall in 1998. Religious cleavages grew and quickly became sources of conflict. Exclusive religious truth claims have led people to support interreligious violence. Yet, benevolent religious values continue to encourage people for mutual solidarity and to shy away from violence. Religious minority groups are often perceived as a threat by the religious majority. Although living side by side allows different groups to develop positive interreligious contacts, this may differ for religious majority and minorities. This study scrutinizes the role of religion in interreligious conflicts in Indonesia.

Polish contemporary literature is not a closed book to European and world readers. Those not involved professionally in the production or study of literature may well have heard of Stanisaw Lem, Witold Gombrowicz, Czesaw Miosz, Wisawa Szymborska or the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature for 2018, Olga Tokarczuk. The situation is different with Polish literature of earlier periods, including the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century novel. Our book attempts to change this perspective and poses the question as to whether another - expanded and more inclusive - literary canon is possible.

- Abstract
Vision reports occupy large space in the Book of Ezekiel and the texts put special emphasis on the details of receiving a vision. In Thailand, Buddhist monks or Hindu priests also have seen visions. Mediums travel to distant places in visions and meet with spirits. Christian churches set goals for the future and call them visions. This study takes a closer look at visions both in the Book of Ezekiel and in the Thai context by focusing on the Thai translation of Hebrew terms for visions. Besides that, it compares the Hebrew concepts behind visions with the Thai understanding.

- Abstract
Jan-Olav Henriksen investigates the close relationship between God and human beings via an understanding of religion as clusters of practices that relate humans to ultimacy by different types of representation. Christian religion articulates its belief in God as creator (manifest in the power to be) and redeemer (represented in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Christ thus is the primary representation of God as the ultimate reality of love. He is also the true image of God, and the model for how humans are also called to represent God in love. The human features of desire and vulnerability, as these express elements that shape, form, and articulate challenges for human life, present humans with the need for orienting themselves, and for different types of transformation. Christian religion articulates a specific mode of how to cope with these challenges presented by desire and vulnerability: by living in love. Against this backdrop, Henriksen argues that neither how one understands religion, God, nor how to live a life that relates to ultimacy, can be tasks fulfilled as long as history goes on.

- Abstract
Medical devices include objects, substances and software that are used for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes for humans. However, the main intended effect, in contrast to medicinal products, is not primarily pharmacological, metabolic or immunological, but usually physical or physicochemical. The innovation cycles for many modern implantable medical devices are estimated to be about 18 months, for software even shorter. It is obvious that the evaluation of the performance, the effectiveness, the benefits and risks of a medical devices is very different compared to medicinal products. The recent EU-Regulation on medical devices asks for very requirements regarding the systematic evaluation of medical devices in humans and the procedures for granting the CE mark. The recent volume of the series MEDICAL ETHICS addresses the ethical, legal, methodological, and practical challenges arising from the Regulation regarding the development and use of medical devices.

- Abstract
Muslim reflection on the Cross is dominated by the notion of a substitute being crucified in Jesus'place - something never mentioned in the Qur'an. Reliant on repetition of decontextualized, lexicographical readings, it does scant justice to the spiritual depth and hermeneutical finesse of the Qur'an. Failing to note the ironic trope of the text, it conceptualizes the supremacy of God in merely this-worldly terms, reducing divine mystery to the mythical and the banal. Far from explaining Qur'an 4:157, Substitutionism obscures and distorts it.

In the past seventy years, education and training have evolved from side issues of political cooperation to political priorities of the EU. For three decades within this period, they were promoted implicitly to enable the mobility of workers in the internal market. Later on, a European dimension of education and training has developed through mobility and cooperation programs and through the lifelong learning discourse. Today, a European policy space of education and training is unfolding, which the EU is coordinating by the means of soft governance arrangements.

The book highlights facets of people's experiences since the 19th century with Atlantic space and the design of their stay on board ships. The contributions range from the perspective of pleasure-seeking tourists, who used ships as a temporary, luxurious homes to the perspective of military personnel, who perceived the Atlantic Passage as a transition between homeland security and potentially dangerous professional operations - the risks of sea voyages even on technically sophisticated ocean liners, whose interiors and services often include grand hotels in the metropolises of the late 19th and 20th century, were discreetly ignored by the passengers. The charm of the Atlantic and the ship, unthinkable in earlier times, should not be decimated in any way.

- Abstract
Africa is on the move. New geopolitical constellations have prompted individuals and groups to escape war, authoritarian regimes, environmental crises, and poverty. This has led to multiple migration patterns and complex mobilities of African people within and outside of Africa. This volume demonstrates that there is no unifying way to conceptualise the multiple nature of African mobilities. Some authors have conceptualised mobility on a metaphorical level while others provide analyses along spatial movement. This volume offers a vast portrayal of the diversity, innovation and richness of African mobile experiences through geographical, linguistic and socio-political domains. Providing nuanced and complex analyses offered by African Studies scholars of various disciplines, this book aims to contribute to new insights into African mobile experiences and to a repositioning of how Africa is represented globally.

Undertaking a systematic examination of the post-conciliar ecclesiological development in the Indian Catholic Church, in its existential multi-religious and multi-cultural context, the author attempts to develop an ecclesiological reflection for the Indian context.

- Author

- Abstract

- Abstract
Volume 19 is dedicated to the memory of Prof Lothar Fietz (University of Tübingen) in appreciation of his merits as an outstanding Huxley scholar, as a Founding Member and Curator of the Aldous Huxley Society and as a true friend (see the In Memoriam above). The volume opens with a sequence of hitherto unpublished Huxley writings, starting with the three extant versions from 1949 of his dramatization of Ape and Essence (1948), thematically linked with two texts treating the physical survival of mankind and three contrasting texts discussing the question of spiritual survival. This section is followed by Huxley's draft for an introduction of Edna St. Vincent Millay at one of her poetry readings in 1938 and an autograph letter to Seabury Edwardes that he wrote shortly after the publication of The Doors of Perception (1954). The volume closes with several critical articles on Huxley's relationship with D. T. Suzuki, his Sanary period and his view and practice of literary utopias.

- Abstract

- Abstract
During World War 2 (WW2) Nazi Germany established 500 camps in occupied Norway. In May 1945 these camps quickly became symbols of terror and death. At war's end war criminals and collaborators had to be arrested pending their trials, in a time marked by revenge. This book examines new perspectives on the scope and fate of the Nazi camps in Norway during WW2. One of the most symbol-laden sites in Norwegian war history is in focus. The SS camp Falstad in central Norway was an arena of Nazi abuses from 1941-1945. After the war, it was made into a prison and played a key part in the Norwegian post-war trials.

50. Evolution und Degeneration der Stadt
