The Antenna Applications Symposium and its predecessor, the Air Force Antenna Symposium, have for more than fifty years provided a unique forum for exchange of ideas and information about the practical aspects of antenna design, development, and use in systems. The Antenna Applications Symposium emphasizes antenna design and application to systems. Engineers are encouraged to present practical solutions to problems that are encountered during development and implementation of antennas and antenna systems. This paper presents a systematic approach to characterize integration challenges when implementing mission engineering and discusses some specific techniques to address these issues. With the introduction of mission engineering in the DOD science and technology lexicon, integration assumes a new dimension beyond the system product level. First, the authors offer a more precise definition of integration that focuses on incorporating a new technology or military capability into an existing organization's infrastructure. Using a collection of system integration literature and a set of examples, the authors define major problem areas regarding integration. Analyses of these issues present opportunities to identify specific methods to avoid or mitigate them. The resultant process is a foundation for mission engineering practitioners to plan successful integration of a new system. Acceptance of these procedures in the mission engineering community may lead to inclusion as standard practices in the DOD Mission Engineering Guide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Formation behaviors of rod-like reactive shaped charge penetrator (RRSCP) and their effects on damage capability are investigated by experiments and numerical simulations. The pulsed X-ray technology and a spaced aluminum/steel plate with the thicknesses of 5 mm/100 mm are used. Three types of sphericalsegment aluminum-polytetrafluoroethylene-copper (Al-PTFE-Cu) reactive liners with Cu contents of 0%, 46.6%, and 66% are fabricated and tested. The experimental results show that the reactive liners can form excellent rod-shaped penetrators with tail skirts under the shaped charge effect, but the tail skirts disappear over time. Moreover, rupturing damage to the aluminum plate and penetration to the steel plate are caused by the RRSCP impact. From simulation analysis, the RRSCP is formed by a mechanically and chemically coupled response with the reactive liner activated by shock in its outer walls and bottom and then backward overturning, forming a leading reactive penetrator and a following chemical energy cluster. The unique formation structure determines the damage modes of the aluminum plate and the steel plate. Further analysis indicates that the formation behaviors and damage capability of Al-PTFE-Cu RRSCP strongly depend on Cu content. With increasing Cu content, the velocity, activation extent, and reaction extent of Al-PTFE-Cu RRSCP decrease, which contribute to elongation and alleviate the negative effects of chemical reactions on elongation, significantly increasing the length-diameter ratio and thus enhancing the capability of steel plate penetration. However, the lower activation extent and energetic density will weaken the RRSCP's capability of causing rupturing damage to the aluminum plate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One subsystem of the Czech GBAD system 2K12 which is currently being modernized is the automated 1A18 device for missile aiming and positive target-in-zone indication. Its contemporary construction is according to the mid-20th century technology. The device is an analogue electro-mechanical computer which does not meet today's needs of reliability and operational demand factor. This paper concisely deals with a possibility of this device replacement by a more universal digital computing device. Reactive material (RM) is a new type of energetic material, which is widely used in the military technology fields such as fragmentation warheads and shaped charge warheads. Violent chemical reactions take place in the impact process of reactive materials, and how to realize the macro numerical simulation of shock-induced energy release behavior of reactive materials is one of the most urgent problems to be solved for its future military applications. In this study, a numerical simulation approach and procedure is proposed, which can simulate the shock-induced energy release behavior of reactive materials on a macro scale. Firstly, program implementation of the mechanical-thermal-chemical coupled effect model for RM is realized in the second-development interface of LS-DYNA software. Then, the adaptive simulated annealing algorithm is used to fit the chemical reaction kinetic parameters of RM using the direct ballistics test data. Finally, the simulation calculation of the fragment penetrating upon steel plate is carried out to expand the applicability of the numerical simulation approach proposed in this study. The results show that the numerical simulation approach proposed in this study can reproduce the results of the direct ballistics test more accurately, which assumes practical significance for the engineering application of reactive materials in the military field in the future.
