- Abstract
The necessity of studying Arabic dialects has attracted more attention in the recent years. Qatar University chose to support the growing academic interest and research in the field by hosting the Association Internationale de Dialectologie Arabe (AIDA) conference on 11 - 13 November 2013. The AIDA10 conference and the tenth volume of AIDA proceedings show that a good deal of change and development in the field is occurring. Fewer papers deal on hitherto unknown dialects as the white spots on the map of Arabic dialects have significantly shrunk. More papers focus on syntactical issues because we now possess more and larger text collections. Papers using'change'in their titles indicate that Arabic dialectology has a long history. Perhaps the time has come to re-examine the studies of the 1940s, 50s and 60s concerning the dialects of certain regions.

- Abstract
The book presents the results of a long research into the life and work of the German theologian and teacher Fritz Jahr (1895–1953) from Halle an der Saale, who was the first to use the term'bioethics', as early as 1926. It is a revised history of bioethics with an overview of all 22 of Jahr's known published papers. The analysis follows the diffusion after 1997 of the discovery of Fritz Jahr worldwide and particularly the contribution of Croatian bioethicists to it.

Helga Thieroff and Helga Thieroff
- Abstract
In this non-fictional biography, Helga Thieroff relates the life of her gifted son Kai from his birth up until his suicide at the age of 21. She not only gives a vivid account of the various stages of Kai's life from the perspective of a mother who experiences a rollercoaster ride of emotions in accompanying her child; she also describes the'different'nature of gifted children and adolescents from a professional viewpoint and outlines the problems and misunderstandings these young people encounter at school and in society at large. Helga Thieroff studied educational science, psychology and general linguistics in Bayreuth and Berlin. Motivated by her experience with her own gifted son, she founded the'Children's Club', the first preschool project for gifted children in Berlin, in 1990. Since her move to Rhineland-Palatinate in the mid-nineties, she has operated a specialised psychological and educational practice for gifted children. In 2000 she founded the'Children's College'in Neuwied (Begabtenzentrum Rheinland-Pfalz), an extracurricular support facility for gifted children and adolescents, which she has since managed. Helga Thieroff was awarded the Order of Merit with Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2011 for her longstanding commitment to gifted people.'We hope this book about Kai's unusual life journey can give orientation and help to other gifted young people who are searching for their place in this world, and to their parents.'(Prof. Franz J. - Abstract
This celebratory publication is an expression of deepest gratitude to Herta Nagl-Docekal. With this volume, colleagues, graduates and friends want to celebrate her collected philosophical works. Her entire life's work has been characterized by both humanitarian and humanist commitment: to seek the principles of justice in the co-existence of human beings, but that philosophy also provides the basic yardstick, to highlight distortions on recent theories. Her philosophical work is alive with the commitment to a philosophy which is compelled to seek the principles of greater justice and solidarity.

8. Zwischen Kirche und Synagoge
- Author

- Abstract

9. Christian Ethical Implications of the Presence of the Kingdom as God’s Performative Action in the Light of Speech Act Theory
- Author
-
Anna Cho and Anna Cho
- Abstract
This book presents a novel Biblical ethical hermeneutic approach that emerges from an understanding of the presence of the kingdom of God in the Biblical text. The approach is predicated upon the use of speech act theory (abbreviated as SAT) in relation to `kingdom language'in the Biblical text. The approach shows how the notion of kingdom language, as God's divine activity, is elicited in the contemporary Christian's life by allowing it to operate beyond the world of the Biblical text. In other words, this approach establishes a Biblical-ethical hermeneutic bridge between the text (and its context) and the context of contemporary readers of the text. The alternative linguistic epistemology in SAT considers the principle of the kingdom of God in the past (locution level), the present (illocutionary level) and the future (perlocutionary level). The dynamic equivalences of the past, present and future of the kingdom of God based on an SAT approach to the Biblical text can inform Christian ethical theory and moral action in the present world. It can also provide a new moral sensibility in relation to God's sovereignty and the responsibility of Christians in contemporary society.

10. Dialogical Foundations of Business Ethics
- Author
-
Przemyslaw Rotengruber and Przemyslaw Rotengruber
- Abstract
Seeking an ethical formula that would prove useful for evaluating actions and events occurring in the sphere of business and economics, the author focuses on dialogue. The need for dialogue is justified by the fact that interlocutors share a conviction that the relationship between them is valuable. Although the manner for assessing business experiences in the proposed formula is narrowed down to the interactive criterion of fairness, this criterion is sufficient for enabling partners to agree, or for them to reach a consensus. It reveals to them the ethically and praxeologically destructive effects of refusing to exchange information about their own accomplishments and plans and, sometimes, the consequences of refusing to accept responsibility for the process of others taking on the role of business partners.

- Abstract

- Abstract
At the intersection of Derrida's philosophy and Spivak's influence on narrative studies, this study offers a critical effort that goes against the mainstream of contemporary studies about autobiographical texts, here Reading Lolita in Tehran and Persepolis. On another level, this book is an attempt to interrogate critically the relation of subalternity and autobiographical writing, which is only made possible by extending the range of the genre of autobiography so that it can bear witness to what has been condemned to be unnarratable and, consequently, unheard.

Using three divisions of the horizontal tripartite of the Déwaruci play, and of the vertical tripartite of the wayang kulit cosmology, together with the Javanese concepts of lair, batin, and rasa, the examination of Bhīma's quest reveals three stages of the Javanese spiritual growth, which can be systematically summarized as the purification of the corporeal feelings, the purification of the emotional feelings, and the purification of the intuitive feelings which culminates in the union with God, the so-called manunggaling kawula-Gustia.

It is the conviction of Sacramentum Caritatis as well as the fathers of the Second Vatican Council that active participation at Eucharistic celebration cannot be easily disassociated from active involvement in the Church's mission in the world. This present study in the light of the foregoing presuppositions, exposes some of such challenges confronting the Afro-Igbo Christian, with special focus on the menace of the osu caste system, and proposes ways towards its eradication. One of such ways remains strengthening the Eucharistic celebration through the process of the inculturation.

18. The Kurds before a Regional Transformation
- Author

Ferhad Ibrahim Seyder (Ed.) and Ferhad Ibrahim Seyder (Ed.)
- Abstract
The Kurdish independence movement is in retreat. Contributing factors for this withdrawal are the new outbreak of the Kurdish war in Turkey, the structural weakening of the autonomous region'Rojava'in Syria, proclaimed by the DUP, and the setbacks in Iraqi Kurdistan, caused by political and economic blockades. The Kurdish autonomy projects will be reduced to a minimum. The independence referendum in Iraq and the Iraqi and Shiite militias'military response are indicative of the reluctance of the Middle-Eastern ruling forces to accept political and ethnical pluralism. External actors as the USA, the EU and the UN, support the return of the'strong'state in order to support regional stability. Kurdish elites and their political organisations are facing a crisis of their own. The Kurdistan Workers'Party propagates postmodern concepts of a post-nation state in a region requiring stable political structures more than ever before. In Iraqi Kurdistan ongoing internal fighting between the main actors sets back Nation and State building processes by decades. All these factors are part of a phase of transition aiming at a new regional order, whose outlines can't be anticipated yet.

- Abstract
Over the last decade traditional Indian temple towns have transformed into centres for urban lifestyles and tourist activities. One of these is the historic temple town Vrindavan in North India, on which this study focuses. Exploring the multiple socio-cultural realities present in the town, the author engages with the narratives of the residents as they respond to the socio-environmental changes against the backdrop of national and regional modernisation processes. Here the imaginaries of a mythic Vrindavan, with its pristine and sacred environment, are evoked in narrations on contemporary modernity.

- Abstract

- Abstract
The authority-oriented pastoral/catechetical planning method, which characterizes the African mission transmission, has been problematic as it subtly neglects in its pedagogy the culture and daily life of the subject. Hence, the people operate a Christian/cultural double standard. This book proffers an alternative as the author makes the concept of the relationship hermeneutics model to a creative writing that aims towards an empirical application in the theology of inculturation, which is a subject-oriented and dialogical method that draws its strength from the incarnation prototype.

- Abstract

This volume brings together ten essays focusing on the diversity of operatic institutions, their protagonists, and historical fortunes in Europe from 1730 to 1917. Its aim is not to understand operatic institutions as locally distinct and isolated organizations, but rather to perceive them as a part of a historically fluctuating, transnational network: a network that was shaped among other things by individual professionals and groups in the opera business (and beyond), as well as by specific socio-cultural and political surroundings. The volume offers new perspectives on a wide range of topics, including networks of cultural exchange, singers as agents in shaping institutional structures, and the influence of socio-cultural, diplomatic, and political factors on operatic production across international borders.

- Abstract
How does EU apply conditionality towards potential candidate countries in the Europeanization process? Is EU applying also deliberation for defining and applying conditions towards local institutions? This study analyzes the Europeanization process of newly established country, Kosovo by focusing on the application of EU conditionality and deliberation as enlargement tools. Deliberation is used for the first time in combination to EU conditionality. The research base of this study is the High Representative Meeting between EU and Kosovo representatives in the Stabilization and Association Process Dialogue: Sectorial Meeting on Justice, Freedom and Security, which was held in Prishtina in 2016. This case study has been qualitatively analyzed with a discourse analysis of thirty dialogues. As novelty, this study introduces an index of three measurement levels of EU conditionality, whereas Discourse Quality Index (DQI) was applied for deliberation. In a combination of theory and practice, the study presents concrete results, which are interesting for academia, EU institutions and public politics in Kosovo.'Lushaku shows in her book that real politics is more complex with a mixture of conditionality and deliberation, where sometimes preferences are changed by the force of the better argument. Her book will help that the general public becomes more aware of this complexity and learns that politics can be much more interesting than simply a power game.'Jürg Steiner, Professor Emeritus at North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA and Universität Bern, Switzerland.

Van Rensselaer Potter (1911-2001), the biochemist-oncologist of University of Wisconsin-Madison, was long been related to the invention of the term'bioethics'. Even today, knowing that the German theologian Fritz Jahr (1895-1953) is to be credited for this invention, Potter's ideas do not lose on their importance, primarily for his opposition to a bioethics narrowed down onto biomedical issues. The book represents the first monograph on Potter's life and work worldwide, telling a fascinating story about a concerned top scientist and humanist.

- Abstract
Today, we can no longer hide under the pretence that the grace of God alone suffices to make one a good priest. A close study of the history of priestly formation has shown that not just the training of priests can ensure an authentic priest-product, rather a continuous effort to adapt the training to the current world situation so that priests would be in the position to discharge their duties effectively. Such readiness to adaptability should, of course, not lose sight of the meaning and function of the priest as revealed in the person of Jesus: a service to the world. In the bid to assess the models for the training of priests in South-eastern Nigeria, the author using a historical-critical method traced the history of the models and events that shaped the current modules for the training of priests in South-eastern Nigeria. At the end of the historical research, he proffered some suggestions for improvement, amendment and solidification of the training of priests in the area. As one of the younger African churches, the examination of the training of priests in South-eastern Nigeria will also serve as a paradigm or typology for understanding the dynamics and the process of training of priests in other African countries, since most of these local churches share relatively similar historical, cultural, economic and socio-political circumstances.

In Metaphysical Poetry, there is an emphasis on religious experience, which often touches on diverse kinds of turning. Among them are religious conversion (a turn to God), spatial movement (turning in space), divine transformation (turning from one kind into another), musical tuning (turning as a requisite for harmony) and circular turning. Moreover, there is a strong link between turning and its realisation through the language of the poems. Focussing on John Donne and George Herbert, this study explores various aspects of turning, as well as their interrelation.

38. Spanish Literature, Crisis and Spectrality: Notes on a Haunted Canon
- Author

Pablo Valdivia and Pablo Valdivia
- Abstract
In Spanish Literature, Crisis and Spectrality: Notes on a Haunted Canon, Prof. Dr. Pablo Valdivia analyses the contradictions and complexities of the Spanish traditional canon from a transnational approach. Valdivia explores this particular canon as a ‘haunted house'by focusing on the specific dialectics of presence, absence and (in)visibilization offered in relevant case studies: José Ricardo Morales, Cervantes or Jesús Carrasco, among others. Under the new term of ‘disinherited literature', Valdivia advocates for coining critical categories that enrich the study of Spanish texts and shed new light on their radical specificities far from biased political and power strategic interests.

39. Neuroethics, Nootropics, Neuroenhancement
- Author

- Abstract
This book puts forward an ethical case against promoting neuroenhancement in modern society. It does so by invoking a normative platform that can be couched in three S'es: synapses, self, and society —themselves symbolizing the three main sources of influence in neuroethics. From this platform, it seeks to protect the individual's right to choose the good over what is purportedly better, thereby contributing a philosophical perspective not only to the neuroenhancement debate, but to the other debates in neuroethics as well.

- Abstract
Living in global villages where different world-views and cultures daily traverse each other, and the hegemonic power of the West is being challenged by other powerful role-players, numerous political and ethical challenges emerge. This traversing of narratives is interpreted and developed into a trans-fictional praxis, as a praxis that takes this global experience seriously. The book also acknowledges the role of Christianity in the construction of global villages and therefore seeks a Christ-poiēsis as a way for non-colonial spaces to emerge from the shadows of these villages.

- Abstract
In our present time, talking about God with reference to its at times destructive consequences has become so much conflictive that sometimes even the abolition of God to the advantage of a more peaceful mutual co-existence is demanded.

- Abstract
This longitudinal study has followed nineteen Swedish service members as they have transitioned from military to civilian life and grappled with their own questions of losing profound military identities, communities, meanings, and purposes in life, in addition to exploring alternate cultural identities. The findings present existential, implicit religious and spiritual ways of reconsidering the uniform through new and/or preexisting identities.

Sören Köpke and Sören Köpke
- Abstract
As climate change is becoming more severe, drought is threatening to disrupt agrarian societies. This book investigates the connections between drought and social conflict over land and water. It is a comparative study of eight dryland regions in Sub-saharan Africa, South and East Asia and South America. Sören Köpke looks at different agricultural production systems and analyses environmental conflicts linked to drought. Through the political ecology approach, the author highlights the power imbalances underpinning these conflicts. A central finding: Development strategies decide if a conflict escalates or not. The book contributes to the on-going debate on the link between climate change and conflict.

- Abstract
This book presents a case study on the city of Yangzhou in China from 1853 to 1928. During this time, the local society of Yangzhou experienced profound changes towards modernization, when the nation-state of China gradually took shape at the local level.'Yangzhou under the Qing'was transformed into'Yangzhou under modern China'. The diverse interactions between the Protestant missions and the multiple actors in the local society kept generating new local context and giving special input to the shaping of modernity in the local society. This study analyses the changing situations of the local society as well as the role of Protestant Church as part of the local social fabric, and tries to achieve a better understanding of how modern China developed out of armed conflicts, power-play, and cooperations among different actors in the local society.

- Abstract

47. Representations and Renegotiations of the Nation in Anglophone Cameroonian Literature

- Abstract
Guided by postcolonial theory and the ideas of some Western and African philosophers this study's in-depth analysis of the novels of three Anglophone Cameroonian authors addresses the question of how principles of nation formation and nationalism are influenced by both colonialism and pre-colonial in situ constituents. The analysis focuses on how nations represented in the imaginary worlds constructed by the novelists are dominated by aspects such as ethnicity, corruption, authoritarianism, nepotism, solidarity and communitarianism which marginalize the masses, leaving them in misery and abject poverty. Tracing the historical settings of the novels from 1948 till present day, the study delineates the writers'representation of the Anglophones of Cameroon as being marginalized as well as suffering from self-marginalization and also demonstrates how postcolonial misery in Africa is not caused solely by colonialism but by several other aspects. This study reads the works of these Anglophone novelists not only as representing aspects in a nation but as tools of renegotiating a better society and a way forward for this nation.

- Abstract

It addresses topics that are still heavily under-researched. These include the `decolonisation'of health care as well as the development and implementation of medical concepts for `developing countries'such as primary health care.
