The effect of paper thermal destruction on its luminescence spectra and luminescence excitation spectra in the spectral ranges of 400-550 nm and 250-450 nm, respectively, was studied. It is proposed to use the characteristic changes in the intensity and shape of the luminescence spectra as a criterion for the state of paper insulation of power transformers. On the basis of the analysis performed, it was concluded that when luminescence is excited at a wavelength of 360 nm, none of the main components of the paper can contribute to the recorded luminescence spectra. It is assumed that the resulting luminescence spectra are due to the emission of various impurities that enter the paper during its production.

In many of machine parts and structural components, materials surface would be worked. In this study, residual stresses on the surfaces were measured by X-ray diffraction method, and effects of surface working on the residual stresses were examined. In case of lathe machining of type 304 stainless steel bar, the residual stresses in circumferential directions are tensile, and those in axial directions are almost compressive. Highly tensile residual stresses in the circumferential directions were improved by emery paper polishing. 10 to 20 times of polishing changes high tensile residual stresses to compressive residual stresses. In the case of shot peening on a type 304 stainless steel plate, the compressive residual stress inside is several hundred MPa lower than that on the surface. By applying the emery paper polishing to the shot peened surface 10 or 20 times, the residual stress on the surface is improved to &minus, 700 MPa. While fatigue strength at 288 &deg, C in the air of the shot peened material is 30 MPa higher than solution heat treated and electro-polished material, the fatigue strength of the shot peened and followed by emery paper polished material is 60 MPa higher. Thus, the emery paper polishing is simple and a very effective process for improvement of the residual stresses.

Madagascar undergoes, like all countries in the world, the effects of climate change. in fact, since the last 5 years, in the coastal regions and the basins, the temperature has raised from 2 to 2.5 ° and varies between 34 to 36 ° in the shadow during the rainy season and on the high hills, the temperature diminishes from 2 to 2.5 ° during the dry period and varies from 4 ° to 8 °. However, the structure of lodging of 60% of the people are not adapted to this temperature change. Particularly, in the coastal regions, the walls of the houses are made of sheet iron. The inside of these houses is very hot when the weather is hot and very cold when it is cold. The inhabitants can’t afford the houses made in bricks or breeze block and the natural sources of aggregates are in the process of exhaustion. In the other part, we have seen that tons of paper are ready to be burned at the administrative services (public treasury, public financing, universities, ...) and the newspaper publishers. So, it becomes a must to find another way to the construction materials, justifying in that case our research axis. This study aims at the developing of construction material based on recycled paper, binder and aggregate. It deals of picking up or gathering all waste of papers and outdates newspapers and transforming them into brick for building constructions. What’s more, papers have prominent thermal insulating properties. Our work is focused on the study of variants on the different manufacturing processes, the choice of binder, the preparation of the specimens with different binders and different dosages, the mechanical compression tests for different binders, the evaluation of thermal conductivity for different binders and the numerical simulation of the thermo mechanical behavior of samples. The result is a lightweight brick with good thermal insulation. Tests have also made it possible to declare that the material has acceptable mechanical properties : the compressive strength is 1.56 [N/mm2], higher than the value prescribed by the standard for lightweight concrete blocks for construction of 1.1 [N/mm2], the value of thermal conductivity is 0.114 [W/mK], ten times less conductive heat than concrete and it can replace glass wool for a double its thickness. The specific weight is 57.5 [kg/m2].The practical results were confirmed by finite element simulations.

This paper presents a simulation method that is used to study subcritical vibrations of a tube roll in a paper machine. This study employs asymmetric 3D beam elements based on the Timoshenko beam theory. An asymmetric beam model accounts for varying stiffness and mass distributions. Additionally, a detailed rolling element bearing model defines the excitations arising from the set of spherical roller bearings at both ends of the rotor. The results obtained from the simulation model are compared against the results from the measurements. The results indicate that the waviness of the bearing rolling surfaces contributes significantly to the subcritical vibrations while the asymmetric properties of the tube roll have only a fractional effect on the studied vibrations.

This paper reports the effect of process orientation on the mechanical behavior and piezoelectricity of electroactive paper (EAPap) made from natural cotton pulp. EAPap is fabricated by a casting and wet drawing of cellulose film after dissolving cotton with LiCl and DMAc solvent. During the fabrication, permanent wrinkles, a possible factor for performance deterioration, were found in the films. Finite element method was introduced to identify the formation mechanism behind the wrinkles. The simulation results show that the wrinkles were caused by buckling and are inevitable under any conditions. The tensile and piezoelectric tests show that the orientation dependency of the stretched EAPap gives the anisotropic characteristics on both mechanical and piezoelectric properties. In this research, the anisotropic elastic moduli and Poisson&rsquo, s ratios are reported. The piezoelectric charge constant of EAPap in the linear elastic is calculated. The piezoelectric charge constants of EAPap are associated with the alignment angle in the order of 45&deg, &gt, 0&deg, 90&deg, due to the strong shear effect. The higher stretching ratio gives the higher piezoelectricity due to the alignment of the molecular chains and the microstructure in EAPap. The highest piezoelectric charge constant is found to be 12 pC/N at a stretching ratio of 1.6 and aligning angle of 45&deg

Imperfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) is inevitable in modern wireless communication networks, and results in severe multi-user interference in multi-antenna Broadcast Channel (BC). While the capacity of the multi-antenna (Gaussian) BC with perfect CSIT is known and achieved by Dirty Paper Coding (DPC), the capacity and the capacity-achieving strategy of the multi-antenna BC with imperfect CSIT remain unknown. Conventional approaches therefore rely on applying communication strategies designed for perfect CSIT to the imperfect CSIT setting. In this work, we break this conventional routine and make two major contributions. First, we show that linearly precoded Rate-Splitting (RS), relying on the split of messages into common and private parts and linear precoding at the transmitter, and successive interference cancellation at the receivers, can achieve larger rate regions than DPC in multi-antenna BC with partial CSIT. Second, we propose a novel achievable scheme, denoted as Dirty Paper Coded Rate-Splitting (DPCRS), that relies on RS to split the user messages into common and private parts, and DPC to encode the private parts. We show that the rate region achieved by DPCRS in Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) BC with partial CSIT is enlarged beyond that of conventional DPC and that of linearly precoded RS. Gaining benefits from the capability of RS to partially decode the interference and partially treat interference as noise, DPCRS is less sensitive to CSIT inaccuracies, networks loads and user deployments compared with DPC and other existing transmission strategies. The proposed DPCRS acts as a new benchmark and the best-known achievable strategy for multi-antenna BC with partial CSIT., accepted by IEEE transactions on communications for publication

Understanding the effects of water absorption on the geometry of a paper sheet is important for inkjet printing applications, since internal moisture content differences may cause unacceptable out-of-plane deformations. The present work focuses on moisture-induced deformations due to a moisture content that is uniform over the thickness of the sheet. Large enough in-plane differences will cause the sheet to buckle, leading to a wavy pattern at the edges of the sheet. Two approaches are utilized to study this for levels of moisture content up to and including the threshold for buckling. An analytical approach, based on geometrically nonlinear plate theory (von Karman theory), and a numerical one, using commercially available finite element software, are presented. As a first reference problem an isotropic circular plate, wetted uniformly at its center, is solved both analytically and numerically for the in-plane stress distribution, the buckling threshold, and the resulting buckling mode. Secondly, the same is done for an orthotropic rectangular plate, wetted at its edges. Here, in the analytical approach a Rayleigh–Ritz analysis is employed to approximate the buckling threshold. The latter is also calculated by numerical means. The results show that the methods provide results consistent with each other.

In this paper, we address the challenge of overcoming the problem of developing doubly curved surfaces in product design. Product design uses two kinds of surfaces, developable surfaces and non-developable surfaces, which are also called singly and doubly curved surfaces, respectively. A developable surface has zero Gaussian curvature at all points, while a non-developable surface has non-zero Gaussian curvature at least in some region. Surfaces of many product design object are commonly created as doubly curved shapes to meet requirements of structure and aesthetic. The problem of creating the planar development of 3D surfaces with double curvature in the product design depends on the shape of the surface and the material of the surface cover. Therefore, the method of deriving a pattern is different when external forces are used in order to generate the plane patterns such as paper strips from the case when the plane shape can stretch or deform to fit on the 3D surface. Given a three-dimensional object surface, the first step of the fabrication process is flattening or planar development of this surface into a planar shape so that the manufacturer can not only determine the initial shape of the object but also estimate the strain distribution required to form the shape depending on a material. The paper is analysing and rationalizing doubly curved surface of a given shape by multiple strips of paper glued onto a surface. Results are addressing possibilities of achieving an overall smooth surface and developing a model for the generation of curvature continuous surfaces composed of paper strip surfaces, as well as generating alternative solutions that are in the domain of contemporary product design. The paper illustrates usability and different variations of the proposed design.

In this paper, we study the sum rate maximization for successive zero-forcing dirty-paper coding (SZFDPC) with per-antenna power constraint (PAPC). Although SZFDPC is a low-complexity alternative to the optimal dirty paper coding (DPC), efficient algorithms to compute its sum rate are still open problems especially under practical PAPC. The existing solution to the considered problem is computationally inefficient due to employing high-complexity interior-point method. In this study, we propose two new low-complexity approaches to this important problem. More specifically, the first algorithm achieves the optimal solution by transforming the original problem in the broadcast channel into an equivalent problem in the multiple access channel, then the resulting problem is solved by alternating optimization together with successive convex approximation. We also derive a suboptimal solution based on machine learning to which simple linear regressions are applicable. The approaches are analyzed and validated extensively to demonstrate their superiors over the existing approach., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The influence of wetting and drying during high-speed inkjet (HSI) printing on the time-dependent mechanical behavior of commercial HSI papers was investigated using a custom-built C-Impact tensile tester. In HSI printing the water based ink solvent penetrates into the paper while the colorants adhere onto the surface. We found that water strongly affected paper stiffness and strength already 0.1 s after wetting. Creep compliance and paper strain at a typical HSI printing input tension of 180 N/m are varying strongly during the different process steps of HSI printing. In order to achieve a good color registration and print quality, we thus recommend that the web tension should be dynamically controlled in each process step to prevent straining after wetting or shrinkage during drying.

The mechanical durability of paper is a key consideration for applications ranging from shipping boxes to disposable medical substrates. Paper commonly experiences fatigue loading in such applications, but a high-cycle fatigue mechanism has not been identified. This research details paper’s high-cycle fatigue degradation mechanism. Paper specimens were loaded with monotonically increasing, constant, and sinusoidally varying cyclic stresses, and the resulting tensile, creep, and fatigue damage accumulation rates were compared. The difficulty in defining the size and growth of cracks in paper’s cellulosic fiber network were overcome with optically measured strain fields. We found that fatigue damage can accumulate via a fiber fracture mechanism, while ratchetting, creep, and tensile overload damage accumulation occurs due to failure of inter-fiber bonds. We also discovered the synergistic interaction between creep and high-cycle fatigue damage accumulation mechanisms, which is critical for extending the high-cycle fatigue life of paper. Paper is a ubiquitous material used in a range of applications, many of which expose it to fatigue loading. Here, a detailed study of the mechanical response of paper during high‐cycle fatigue loading is reported, with fiber fracture found to be a key degradation mechanism.

Copper-based friction material (CFM) and paper-based friction material (PFM) are the two most commonly used clutch friction materials. The friction and wear characteristics of these two kinds of friction materials under dry conditions were investigated by the pin-on-disc test over a broad range of applied loads, rotating speeds and ambient temperatures. Before experiments, the running-in test was conducted to stabilize the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear amount of the test samples. After experiments, the metallographic micrographs of the tested samples were presented to investigate the wear mechanisms. Experimental results showed that both the COF and wear depth of the CFM are much greater than these of PFM. The COF of CFM decreases with the increase of applied load, and changes slightly with the variation of rotating speed, whereas it increases first and then decreases with the increase of ambient temperature. However, the COF of PFM decreases dramatically with the increase of the rotating speed and ambient temperature, while it remains stable at first and then decreases slowly as the applied load increases. Additionally, under such three working conditions, the wear depth of CFM changes linearly, while the wear depth of PFM varies greatly. This study can be used as a guide for selecting friction materials for clutches with different applications.

International audience; We study the mechanical response, and tearing features of crêpe paper, a two-dimensional, very anisotropic material, with one direction much less stiff than the other one. Depending on how the soft direction has been pre-stretched or not, the apparent Young modulus of the material can be varied over a broad range, while its fracture energy remains unaltered. The classical tearing concertina problem shows that a macroscopic measurement (the shape of the teared region) provides a direct access to the fracture properties of the material (effective Young's modulus, and fracture energy). The overall discussion is conducted in the frame of Griffith's theory of fracture.

Conductive polymers such as PEDOT: PSS have gained popularity in sensor fabrication and integration. The objective of current work is to investigate the effects of process parameters on the final quality of conductive patterns fabricated through electro-hydrodynamic (EHD) jet printing. Solutions of different concentration of PEDOT: PSS in ethylene glycol and isopropyl alcohol were prepared for printing purpose. Effects of operating parameters such as voltage, frequency, pressure and printing speed on quality of printing patterns were experimentally investigated. Solution with higher concentration of PEDOT: PSS in ethylene glycol has shown better jetting stability even at higher frequencies and printing speeds. Increasing the frequency at high printing speed reduced the size of pattern width. Similarly, higher pulse voltage in the working envelope also reduced the pattern size. However, increasing the pressure increased the size of width of pattern. A drastic decrease in the pattern width was observed with increase in printing speed. A pattern width of approximately 19.6 μm was produced at 500 Hz of frequency and 2000 mm/min of printing speed, the electrical resistance of which is 1.03 × 106 Ω/mm. Finally, these results were compared with the same concentration of PEDOT: PSS in isopropyl alcohol reported in previous studies. Paper is a complex material consisting of a network of cellulose fibres at the micro-level. During manufacturing, the network is dried under restraint conditions due to tension in the paper web in machine direction. This gives rise to internal strains that are stored in the produced sheet. Upon exposure to a moisture cycle, these strains may be released. This results in permanent shrinkage that may cause instabilities such as curl or waviness of the sheet. The prime objective of this paper is to model this irreversible shrinkage and to link its magnitude to the properties of the fibres and of the network. For this purpose, randomly generated fibrous networks of different coverages (i.e. ratio of the area occupied by fibres and that of the sheet) are modeled by means of a periodic representative volume element (RVE). Within such RVEs, a finite element method combined with a kinematic hardening plasticity model at the scale of the fibres is used to capture the irreversible response. The computational results obtained demonstrate that the magnitude of the irreversible strains increases with coverage until a certain coverage and beyond that coverage decreases in magnitude. This phenomenon is explained by considering the area fraction of free-standing fibre segments relative to bonded fibre segments in the network. There are many sets of information in the literature (e.g., papers, books and websites) about the great achievements that are expected for aerospace gas turbine engines by the employment of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) and thermally sprayed environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) in their hot zones (e.g., combustion chambers, vanes, shrouds, blades and afterburners). Among these achievements, it is typically highlighted (i) turbine weight reduction, (ii) reduced fuel consumption, (iii) higher operation temperatures, (iv) superior thrust-to-weight ratio and (v) lower emission of toxic gases to the atmosphere. Although these achievements are true, they are generally not well-explained to the reader on how together they come to be. In addition, according to “conventional wisdom”, some of these engineering feats are in fact opposing each other (e.g., higher operation temperatures versus lower emissions). The objective of this tutorial paper is to present the reader how these feats are achieved by the concomitant combination of imaginative engineering. It will explain the non-stop driving force for increasing combustion temperatures; show the basic concepts of CMCs, the paramount need of EBCs, and the complexity of creating EBC architectures via air plasma spray (APS). Finally, highlights on how EBCs/CMCs are tested at high temperature will be provided. The content of this paper shall be understood by anyone with basic knowledge in materials processing and surface engineering.

For several industrial applications, high friction surfaces with low adhesion are essential. Here, a poly (styrene-co-butyl methacrylate) polymer latex is coated on paper to achieve a high static friction at the interface between a coating and e.g. a wood pallet. At this interface, the adhesion should be low enough for easy removal of objects placed on the coated paper. The static friction is measured with a custom designed and constructed frictometer and is investigated as a function of temperature from 25 to 55 degrees C and the resting time. Furthermore, the static friction is investigated with varying coating thicknesses and coatings containing calcium based fillers. Results show that the static friction is increasing non-linearly with both temperature and resting time. Furthermore, an amount of 10 wt% filler increases static friction. In conclusion, the static friction coefficient between coated paper and wood are up to 700% of uncoated paper depending on temperature and resting time. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) version of the dirty paper channel is studied, where the channel input and the dirt experience the same fading process and the fading channel state is known at the receiver (CSIR). This represents settings where signal and interference sources are co-located, such as in the broadcast channel. First, a variant of Costa's dirty paper coding (DPC) is presented, whose achievable rates are within a constant gap to capacity for all signal and dirt powers. Additionally, a lattice coding and decoding scheme is proposed, whose decision regions are independent of the channel realizations. Under Rayleigh fading, the gap to capacity of the lattice coding scheme vanishes with the number of receive antennas, even at finite Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). Thus, although the capacity of the fading dirty paper channel remains unknown, this work shows it is not far from its dirt-free counterpart. The insights from the dirty paper channel directly lead to transmission strategies for the two-user MIMO broadcast channel (BC), where the transmitter emits a superposition of desired and undesired (dirt) signals with respect to each receiver. The performance of the lattice coding scheme is analyzed under different fading dynamics for the two users, showing that high-dimensional lattices achieve rates close to capacity., Accepted in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications

Folded paper has a long history in origami artwork and is used by engineers to rapidly prototype designs of adaptive structures and mechanical metamaterials. However, engineers should be cautious when using paper to investigate the mechanical properties of origami structures. We show that the non-linear, pseudo-plastic behaviour of paper folds complicates the modelling of the mechanical properties of an origami structure. However, this pseudo-plastic behaviour could also present a new design space to tailor the mechanical properties of origami by controlling the rest angles of the folds.

The response of paper to humidity variations is a complex, inherently multi-scale problem. The hygroscopic swelling of individual fibres and their interactions within the fibrous network govern the macroscopic, sheet-level response. At this scale, moisture induced instabilities and out-of-plane deformations may occur, which are critical for a number of industrial applications. This work specifically focuses on several aspects of this important issue. A macroscopic phenomenological hygro-mechanical model is first proposed, which aims at predicting moisture induced out-of-plane deformations in paper sheets. The constitutive model is based on the relation between these deformations and typical irreversible phenomena associated to the history of paper manufacturing, i.e. the release of dried-in strains. The model is used to describe bending induced by moisture gradients through the thickness of the sheet as well as buckling due to moisture variation in the presence of mechanical constraints. The results of the model show that the anisotropic sheet-level hygro-expansion has a strong influence on the instability phenomena. Moreover, a comparison with experiments provides adequate semi-quantitative estimates. An additional step is made towards the multi-scale understanding of paper hygro-mechanics. The fundamental physical mechanisms governing the macroscopic moisture induced response are investigated on the basis of the underlying fibrous network. To this aim, a meso-structural model is developed which consists of a network of fibres randomly positioned in a planar region according to an orientation probability density function. A series of network simulations reveals that upon moisture content variations the expansion of the inter-fibre bonding regions essentially drives the overall deformation. Particularly in the case of anisotropic fibre orientation, this explains the origin of the macro-scale anisotropic hygro-expansion, which is essential for the observed sheet-level instability phenomena.

We translate it into English here and we discuss its results in detail, with a view to its possible influence in the modern theories of generalised continua. The clever solution found, in terms of Bessel functions, by Schrödinger of the problem of the vibrations of a linear infinite chain of molecules gives some important methodological hints for contemporary research.

This paper presents a multi-scale approach to predict the effective hygro-mechanical behaviour of paper sheets based on the properties of the underlying fibrous network. Despite the vast amount of literature on paper hygro-expansion, the functional dependence of the effective material properties on the micro-structural features remains yet unclear. In this work, a micro-structural model of the paper fibrous network is first developed by random deposition of the fibres within a planar region according to an orientation probability density function. Asymptotic homogenization is used to determine its effective properties numerically. Alternatively, two much more idealized micro-structural models are considered, one based on a periodic lattice structure with a regular network of perpendicular fibres and one based on the Voigt average. Despite their simplicity, they reproduce representative micro-structural features, such as the orientation anisotropy and network level hygro-elastic properties. These alternative models can be solved analytically, providing closed-form expressions that explicitly reveal the influence of the individual micro-scale parameters on the effective hygro-mechanical response. The trend predicted by the random network model is captured reasonably well by the two idealized models. The resulting hygro-mechanical properties are finally compared with experimental data reported in the literature, revealing an adequate quantitative agreement.

Damage detection and localization in civil engineering constructions using dynamic analysis has become an important topic in recent years. This paper presents a methodology based on non-destructive detection, localization and quantification of multiple damages in simple and continuous beams, and a more complex structure, namely two-dimensional frame structure. The proposed methodology makes used of Firefly Algorithm and Genetic Algorithm as optimization tools and the Coordinate Modal Assurance Criterion as an objective function. The results show that the proposed combination of Coordinate Modal Assurance Criterion and Firefly Algorithm or Genetic Algorithm can be easily used to identify multiple local structural damages in complex structures. However, the convergence rate becomes slower for the case of multiple damages compared to the case of single damage. The effect of noise on the algorithm is further investigated. It is found that the proposed technique is able to detect the damage location and its severity with high accuracy in the presence of noise, although the convergence rate became slower than in the case when no noise is present. It is also found that the convergence rate of Firefly Algorithm is much faster than that of Genetic Algorithm.

It is our great pleasure and honor to present this special issue of Heat Transfer Engineering to highlight some of the research works presented at the ASME-ATI-UIT 2015 Conference on Thermal Energy Systems: Production, Storage, Utilization, and the Environment that took place on May 17–20, 2015, in Napoli, Italy. The conference was organized under the auspices of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Associazione Termotecnica Italiana (ATI), and Unione Italiana di Termofluidodinamica (UIT). Ten papers included in this special issue were edited by Professor Afshin Ghajar, Editor-in-Chief of Heat Transfer Engineering. The papers report studies of heat transfer related to its enhancement and application to energy systems. The contents open with a paper on experimental measurements in flow boiling heat transfer of low-GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerant R1234yf. It is followed by an experimental investigation of volumetric heat transfer coefficient in three-phase direct contact condenser. A study, both experimental and numerical, on dropwise cooling is also presented on studying the cooling effect of two water droplets gently released onto a heated solid surface. Under the framework of passive heat transfer enhancement, a numerical investigation of laminar mixed convection in a two-dimensional, symmetrically, and partially heated vertical channel with nanofluids is provided. Followed by a study that used Ethylene glycol and water (60:40 EG/W mass ratio) as base fluid with SiO2 nanoparticles as nanofluid in order to compute Nusselt number and friction factor for turbulent pipe flow under the heat flux boundary condition. An active method of enhancing cooling of an array of heat sources mounted in a duct was numerically addressed in another paper. The papers on applications in energy systems starts with a numerical analysis of freezing of phase change materials in a thermal energy storage device integrated with a milk storage cooling cycle. Also given is a study on dynamic models for analyzing and evaluating energy storage concepts and interactions with a concentrated solar power system. Moreover, correlations developed from experimental data for predicting dehumidification and thermal performance of a desiccant wheels are presented. They correlate inlet air temperature and humidity ratio, regeneration temperature, air flow rates, and rotational speed. To complete the energy systems topic, a study on two small second-generation compressed air energy storage systems based on a recuperated gas turbine is presented. The article deals with the issues and methods of teaching translation and interpretation of scientific and technical papers to engineering students from a linguistic point of view. The authors describe the concept and special features of technical translation as a professional activity compared to different kinds of translation. The paper analyzes stylistic, lexical and phraseological, and grammatical peculiarities of scientific and technical papers. Moreover, the authors suggest the main techniques of translating scientific and technical papers such as direct and indirect translation methods.

The dimensional stability of printing paper is strongly related to changes in moisture content. This represents a major issue in the field of digital ink-jet printing, where moisture induced reversible and irreversible deformations may compromise printing quality and runnability. This paper proposes a two-dimensional hygro-mechanical model for paper, that focuses on the prediction of moisture induced out-of-plane deformations, due to inhomogeneous moisture variations in the plane. The model is based on a discrete network of beams. The adopted constitutive model, whose input parameters are calibrated to available experimental data for homogeneous moisture cycling, allows to describe typical irreversible phenomena related to the history of the production of paper, such as the release of dried-in strains. The deformation of paper in the wet and in the dry state predicted by the model is compared with experiments, in which the paper is subjected to a moisture cycle under different types of mechanical constraint. The results of the model capture well the experimental response of paper in terms of buckling patterns and of out-of-plane displacement wavelengths and amplitudes.

In this paper, the thermo-elastic behavior of the graphite nodules contained in ductile iron is derived on the basis of recent transmission electron microscopy investigations of their real internal structure. The proposed model is initially validated by performing a finite element homogenization analysis to verify its consistency with the room-temperature elastic properties of ductile iron measured at the macro scale. Subsequently, it is used to investigate the formation of local residual stresses around the graphite particles by simulating the manufacturing process of a typical ferritic ductile iron grade, and the results are compared with preliminary measurements using synchrotron x-rays. Finally, the obtained accurate description of the stress & strain field at the micro scale is used to shed light on common failure modes reported for the nodules and on some peculiar properties observed in ductile iron at both micro and macro scale.

In a series of papers which are either published [A.R. Hadjesfandiari and G.F. Dargush, Couple stress theory for solids, Int. J. Solids Struct. 48, 2496-2510, 2011; A.R. Hadjesfandiari and G.F. Dargush, Fundamental solutions for isotropic size-dependent couple stress elasticity, Int. J. Solids Struct. 50, 1253-1265, 2013] or available as preprints Hadjesfandiari and Dargush have reconsidered the linear indeterminate couple stress model. They are postulating a certain physically plausible split in the virtual work principle. Based on this postulate they claim that the second-order couple stress tensor must always be skew-symmetric. Since they use an incomplete set of boundary conditions in their virtual work principle their statement contains unrecoverable errors. This is shown by specifying their development to the isotropic case. International audience; The need for safety and comfort in vehicular environments has led to a lot of research in vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANET), ranging from vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications to security. As regards the latter aspect, mostly the focus has been on resorting to public key infrastructure (PKI) and its related concepts. Moreover, methods used to detect the most feared security attacks are based almost exclusively on the use of physical characteristics as well as PKI concepts or both. However with emerging technologies that enable connecting a vehicle to external resources, VANET is evolving, thus inheriting security threats that are common place in conventional IT systems. Therefore, as it is shown in the paper, VANET security must go beyond cryptographic-centric mechanisms that are commonly used for providing data security in wireless environment

in microsystems, and microflow visualization. Two special sessions have been devoted to industrial applications of microfluidics and to nanofluidics. This special issue of Microsystem Technologies focuses the attention of the readers on a selection of nine works representative of the research advances in microfluidics presented during the Conference. Carrier et al. experimentally analyzed the mechanism of satellite droplets formation in the wake of the main droplet generated in a flow-focusing junction, with Newtonian or non-Newtonian liquids. By confocal laser scanning microscopy, Ben Hassan et al. experimentally observed the fouling of a filter due to the accumulation of microparticles on a membrane surface, and developed a numerical model able to predict the cake growth during the filtration. The paper of Kong and Nguyen reports a technique for the fabrication of three-dimensional multilayer liquid-metal microcoils by lamination of dry adhesive films; these microcoils can be used for magnetic resonance relaxometry (MRR) measurement in a lab-ona-chip platform. Samouda et al. developed a new setup for the experimental investigation of gaseous microflows by molecular tagging velocimetry—MTV—and discussed its possible use to obtain a direct measurement of velocity slip at the walls in rarefied regimes. Cao et al. designed different tools for microfluidic droplet processing, including an automated “gradient take-up tool” for the generation of segment sequences with gradually changing composition of the individual droplets. Wibel et al. studied a novel microstructured evaporator geometry consisting of curved, instead of straight, microchannels and demonstrated that strong centrifugal forces led to an enhancement of the evaporation efficiency. Calaon et al. evaluated the capability of producing with high volume lab-on-chip devices through injection molding. The Third European Conference on Microfluidics (μFlu’12) was held in Heidelberg, Germany, in December 8–10, 2012, under the sponsorship of the Hydrotechnic Society of France (SHF), the Alma Mater Studiorum Universita di Bologna, the University of Toulouse and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. This event has gathered 252 participants from 33 countries. The porosity and specific surface areas of four industrial paper materials were determined from synchrotron X-ray microtomography. The porosity profile within the thickness of each paper material shows that a paper sheet consists of three layers: two boundary layers, which present a strong gradient of porosity, and a “bulk” layer in which the porosity is almost constant. The anisotropy and the heterogeneity scale of the microstructure in the “bulk” layer was then analyzed by means of covariograms. It is shown that the microstructure of the four studied papers is transverse isotropic and that the anisotropy of papers containing fillers is less pronounced. Finally, the representative elementary volume (REV) for both studied microstructural properties was evaluated using two techniques: a systematic analysis of the influence of the volume size on the property measurement, and a statistical methodology. The REVs given by both methodologies are then compared.

The dimensional stability of paper products is a well-known problem, affecting multiple engineering applications. The macroscopic response of paper to moisture variations is governed by complex mechanisms originating in the material at all length-scales down to the fiber-level. Therefore, a recently-developed method, based on Global Digital Height Correlation of surface topographies is here exploited to measure the full-field hygro-expansion of single fibers, i. e. a surface strain tensor map over the full field of view is obtained as function of time. From the strain field, the longitudinal and transverse hygro-expansion and principle strains can be calculated. Long- and intermediate-duration dynamic tests are conducted on softwood and hardwood fibers. A large spread in the softwood fiber’s transverse and longitudinal hygro-expansion coefficient ratio was found, while hardwood fibers behave more consistently. Computing the principle strain ratios reduces this spread, as it takes into account the variations of the deformation direction, which is directly affected by the micro-fibril angle (MFA). Furthermore, long-duration tests allow identification of the half-times at which the fibers equilibrate. Finally, the determined major strain angles for all fibers are consistent with the MFA ranges reported in the literature.

An integral formulation for heat conduction problems in non-homogeneous media has recently been proposed by Kassab and Divo [Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements 1996;18:273]. The goal of this communication is to revisit and clarify two key features of the formulation of Kassab and Divo. First, the contention that the integral equation formulation proposed by them does not possess the desired boundary-only character is made and substantiated; it is shown in particular that Eq. (10) therein does not hold owing to the fact that a crucial requirement for the fundamental solution, Eqs. (5c) and (5d) therein, is actually not met. Second, the limiting process associated with a vanishing neighbourhood in connection with the particular kernel function used therein is revisited.

In this study the effects of ink (offset and toner) presence on the mechanical, physical, morphological and thermal properties of newspaper- and office paper fiber-plastic composites were investigated. Printed and unprinted newspaper and office paper fibers were mixed with recycled polypropylene at 50 % by weight fiber loading. The samples were produced with extrusion and compression moulding. The mechanical properties, water absorption and thermal resistances of unprinted and printed newspaper- and office paper fiber-polypropylene composites were compared. In addition, samples were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The obtained results showed that ink presence in the fiber matrix enhanced the water resistance and mechanical properties of fiber plastic composites. Due to ink formulation and fiber characteristics, better results were obtained with printed office paper fiber-plastic composites than with printed newspaper fiber-plastic composites. Scanning electron microscopy investigation also confirmed the good interaction between polypropylene and toner-printed office paper fiber. Moreover, differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed that higher crystallization (χcor) values on printed office paper- and newspaper fiber-plastic composites. This work demonstrated that undeinked waste paper fibers could be effectively used as the reinforcing filler in thermoplastic matrices.

The manufacturing of Portland cement is responsible for a big amount of energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. Therefore, to date, it is imperative to find alternative materials to replace a major part of cement for sustainable concrete constructions. The present study forms a part of an on-going research project on the application of new cementitious matrices produced using different types of recycled materials. In particular, it focuses on the use of pulp and waste paper to partially replace Portland cement at varying percentages for producing a new lightweight mortar, frequently named papercrete. The development of this economical and eco-friendly material may permit of recycling a big amount of waste paper leading to lower housing costs with also ecological benefits. To this scope, an experimental campaign in the laboratory is carried out to characterize this new innovative material from a physical and mechanical point of view. The preliminary results of this on-going experimental campaign are illustrated and commented on in this paper. The obtained results confirm the possibility of applying this partially-recycled material as a possible alternative for strengthening existing panels of masonry.

This review paper provides an overview of the literature for topology optimisation of fluid-based problems, starting with the seminal works on the subject and ending with a snapshot of the state of the art of this rapidly developing field. “Fluid-based problems” are defined as problems where at least one governing equation for fluid flow is solved and the fluid−solid interface is optimised. In addition to fluid flow, any number of additional physics can be solved, such as species transport, heat transfer and mechanics. The review covers 186 papers from 2003 up to and including January 2020, which are sorted into five main groups: pure fluid flow; species transport; conjugate heat transfer; fluid−structure interaction; microstructure and porous media. Each paper is very briefly introduced in chronological order of publication. A quantititive analysis is presented with statistics covering the development of the field and presenting the distribution over subgroups. Recommendations for focus areas of future research are made based on the extensive literature review, the quantitative analysis, as well as the authors’ personal experience and opinions. Since the vast majority of papers treat steady-state laminar pure fluid flow, with no recent major advancements, it is recommended that future research focuses on more complex problems, e.g., transient and turbulent flow.

In this paper, the required models and methods to analyze and quantify the potential demand for urban air mobility (UAM) complementing public transport and possible impacts were defined and applied to the Munich Metropolitan region. An existing agent-based transport model of the study area were used and extended to cover socio-demographic changes up to the year 2030 and intermodal UAM services. An incremental logit model for UAM was derived to simulate demand for this new mode. An airport access model was developed as well. Three different UAM networks with different numbers of vertiports were defined. Sensitivity studies of ticket fare and structure, flying vehicle cruise speed, passenger process times at vertiports and different Urban Air Mobility networks sizes were performed. For the reference case, UAM accounts for a modal share of 0.5%. The absolute UAM demand is concentrated on very short routes; hence, UAM vehicle flight speed variation shows low UAM demand impacts. Kilometer-based fare, number of UAM vehicles per vertiport and passenger process times at vertiports show a significant impact on UAM demand.

Due to the fact that clamping devices are widely used in various industries, the requirements for the operation of such devices are constantly increasing. This is due to an increase in the general requirements for processing accuracy, as well as an increase in the forces acting on the clamped part. The reliability of these devices when working with thin-walled cylindrical parts is of great importance. Thin-walled cylinders used in mechanical engineering are subject to significant loads. With prolonged exposure to loads from clamping forces, as well as from axial tensile forces, plastic deformations of cylindrical parts occur. In the oil and gas industry, when clamping drill and casing pipes in some areas in the capture zone, stresses exceed the yield strength. Multiple clamping of the pipe will reduce the pipe wall in the gripping area, which causes premature pipe failure. Therefore, increasing the holding capacity of clamping mechanisms is relevant. Analysis of broken drill pipes, which have been operating in wedge grips for a long time, showed that in most cases the pipes undergo plastic deformation caused by damage to the pipe surface by the teeth of the ram. To clarify the actual conditions of loading the pipe and the possibilities of increasing the capacity of the clamping devices, studies of the contact pressures in the clamping zone were carried out. A new pipe clamping chuck is also presented, which provides a sufficiently high reliability of fastening of cylindrical parts.

To increase the average achievable rates per user for cluster-edge users, a rotating clustering scheme for the downlink of a coordinated multicell multiuser multiple-input multiple-output system is proposed in this paper and analyzed in two network layouts. In the multicell heterogeneous cellular network, base stations of a cluster cooperate to transmit data signals to the users within the cluster; rotating cluster patterns enable all users to be nearer the cluster center in at least one of the patterns. Considering cellular layouts with three or six macrocells per site, different rotating patterns of clusters are proposed and the system performance with the proposed sets of clustering patterns is investigated using a simulated annealing algorithm for user scheduling and successive zero-forcing dirty paper coding as the precoding method. The rotating clustering scheme is less complex than fully dynamic clustering, and it is primarily designed to improve the throughput of cluster-edge users. As an extra secondary benefit, it is also capable of slightly improving the average achievable sum rate of the network overall. The effectiveness of the proposed methods with two different scheduling metrics, namely throughput maximization and proportionally fair scheduling, is of interest in this work. Moreover, the speed of rotation affects the performance of the system; the higher the speed of rotation, the more frequently any specific users will be nearer the cluster center. Our simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed rotational approach and determine the speed of rotation beyond which any additional performance gains become negligible.

A summary is given of the mechanical characteristics of virus contaminants and the transmission via droplets and aerosols. The ordinary and partial differential equations describing the physics of these processes with high fidelity are presented, as well as appropriate numerical schemes to solve them. Several examples taken from recent evaluations of the built environment are shown, as well as the optimal placement of sensors.

In this work, surface/interface effects for pull-in voltage and viscous fluid velocity effects on the dimensionless natural frequency of fluid-conveying multiwalled piezoelectric nanosensors (FC-MWPENSs) based on cylindrical nanoshells is investigated using the Gurtin–Murdoch surface/interface theory. The nanosensor is embedded in a viscoelastic foundation and subjected to nonlinear van der Waals and electrostatic forces. Hamilton’s principle is used to derive the governing and boundary conditions and is also the assumed mode method used for changing the partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations. The influences of the surface/interface effect, such as Lame’s constants, residual stress, piezoelectric constants and mass density, are considered for analysis of the dimensionless natural frequency with respect to the viscous fluid velocity and pull-in voltage of the FC-MWPENSs.

Throughout the past six months, no number has dominated the public media more persistently than the reproduction number of COVID-19. This powerful but simple concept is widely used by the public media, scientists, and political decision makers to explain and justify political strategies to control the COVID-19 pandemic. Here we explore the effectiveness of political interventions using the reproduction number of COVID-19 across Europe. We propose a dynamic SEIR epidemiology model with a time-varying reproduction number, which we identify using machine learning. During the early outbreak, the basic reproduction number was 4.22±1.69, with maximum values of 6.33 and 5.88 in Germany and the Netherlands. By May 10, 2020, it dropped to 0.67±0.18, with minimum values of 0.37 and 0.28 in Hungary and Slovakia. We found a strong correlation between passenger air travel, driving, walking, and transit mobility and the effective reproduction number with a time delay of 17.24±2.00 days. Our new dynamic SEIR model provides the flexibility to simulate various outbreak control and exit strategies to inform political decision making and identify safe solutions in the benefit of global health.

Metal working fluids in machining operations, also called cutting fluids (CFs), accomplish the main functions of lubrication between the tool and the work material, cooling down the cutting zone, and washing away the chips from the cutting area. Traditional CFs are either entirely based on mineral oils or, for water-based CFs, contain up to 10% mineral oils. Over time, CFs become contaminated by foreign substances, including bacteria and fungi, causing rancid odour in the work environment and health hazards for the machinists; this contamination is countered by adding biocides, which in turn can be polluting and unhealthy. Conventional CFs, therefore, are potentially pathogenic for humans, deteriogenic for the environment, and costly to dispose of due to the mineral oil and biocide contents. As the global CF consumption amounts to over two million tons/year, the development of greener, more sustainable CFs is highly desired in the manufacturing industry. In this paper, the replacement of mineral oil in CFs with suitable microorganisms providing the lubrication function is studied within a bio-integrated manufacturing approach, with the aim to markedly reduce the negative impact conventional CFs on environment and human health. The turning trials were performed on AISI 1045 steel bars under Small Quantity Lubrication (SQL) conditions using a microbial-based CF containing a microalgae species as lubricant component. The viability and effectiveness of utilising the novel microbial-based CF was positively demonstrated. The cutting forces, tool wear level, surface finish and dimensional accuracy achieved with the microbial-based CF were comparable to or better than for dry cutting and conventional CF.

Surface roughness parameters are an important factor affecting surface wear resistance, but the relevance between the wear resistance and the surface roughness parameters has not been well studied. This paper based on the finite element simulation technology, through the grey incidence analysis (GIA) method to quantitatively study the relevance between the wear amount of per unit sliding distance (&Delta, Vs) and the surface texture roughness parameters under dry friction conditions of the different surface topography. A zeroth order six-variables grey model, GM(0,6), for prediction the wear characteristic parameter &Delta, Vs was established, and the experiment results verified that the prediction model was accurate and reasonable.

The present study investigates essential steps in build‐up of models for description of the spread of infectious diseases. Combining these modules, a SEI3RSD model will be developed, which can take into account a possible passive immunisation by vaccination as well as different durations of latent and incubation periods. Besides, infectious persons with and without symptoms can be distinguished. Due to the current world‐wide SARS‐CoV‐2 pandemic (COVID‐19 pandemic) models for description of the spread of infectious diseases and their application for forecasts have become into the focus of the scientific community as well as of broad public more than usual. Currently, many papers and studies have appeared and appear dealing with the virus SARS‐CoV‐2 and the COVID‐19 disease caused by it. This occurs under medical, virological, economic, sociological and further aspects as well as under mathematical points of view. Concerning the last‐mentioned point, the main focus lies on the application of existing models and their adaptation to data about the course of infection available at the current time. Clearly, the aim is to predict the possible further development, for instance in Germany. It is of particular interest to investigate how will be the influence of political and administrative measures like contact restrictions, closing or rather re‐opening of schools, restaurants, hotels etc. on the course of infection. The steps considered here for building up suitable models are well‐known for long time. However, understandably they will not be dealt with in an extended way in current application‐oriented works. Therefore, it is the aim of this study to present some existing steps of modelling without any pretension of completeness. Thus, on the one hand we give assistance and, on the other hand, we develop a model capable to take already known properties of COVID‐19 as well as a later possible passive immunisation by vaccination and a possible loss of immunity of recovered persons into account.

Glulam are long engineered wood beams (or columns) composed by graded lumbers bounded together with the use of appropriate adhesives under pre-established pressure. The greater the industrialization the greater will be the production of wood waste a matter that deserves attention and development of technologies in terms of its waste management. This paper aimed to investigate the technical feasibility of Brazilian industrial glulam waste usage as raw material for particleboard production industries using a castor oil-based polyurethane adhesive. Particleboards were manufactured using glulam (produced with Eucalyptus urograndis) waste particles and castor oil-based polyurethane adhesive at 8, 10, 12 and 14% mass proportions and characterized based on NBR 14810-2:2006 procedures. Analysis of variance was performed for the comparison of mechanical and physical performances of the panels. The increase of adhesive content caused and increase of the MOR (Rupture Modulus), but the MOE (Elasticity Modulus) and the physical properties remained unaltered above 12% of adhesive content. The adhesive content greater than 8% provided panel performances that met the standardized specifications. Based on these findings, it was possible to conclude that the waste of glulam produced with Eucalyptus urograndis can be used as raw material for particleboard production. Resumo Madeira Lamelada Colada (MLC) podem ser empregadas como vigas ou colunas. A MLC é um produto engenheirado de madeira composto por lamelas classificadas e coladas usando adesivos apropriados e pressão preestabelecida. Quanto maior a industrialização do processo de fabricação de MLC maior é a geração de resíduos, que merecem atenção, e o desenvolvimento de tecnologias para a agreagação de valor nestes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar a viabilidade técnica do uso do resíduo industrial brasileiro da produção de MLC como matéria-prima para a indústria de painéis de partículas utilizando adesivo poliuretano à base de óleo de mamona. Painéis de partículas foram produzidos utilizando resíduos da produção de MLC (produzida com Eucalyptus urograndis) e resina poliuretana à base de mamona na proporção em massa de 8, 10, 12 e 14% e caracterizados de acordo com os procedimentos do documento normativo NBR 14810-2:2006. Análise de variância foi realizada para comparação dos desempenhos físicos e mecânicos dos painéis. O aumento do teor de adesivo provocou aumento de MOR (Módulo de ruptura), mas o MOE (Módulo de Elasticidade) e as propriedades físicas se mantiveram constantes acima de 12% de adesivo. Painéis com teores de adesivo maiores que 8% apresentaram desempenhos que atenderam os requisitos normativos. Assim, foi possível concluir que os resíduos de MLC produzida com Eucalyptus urograndis podem ser utilizados como matéria-prima para produção de painéis de partículas.

The paper based on the analysis of the working conditions of railway transport shows that, ceteris paribus, an increase in actual durability and mean time before failure of rolling stock units is obtained through maintenance of wheelsets, especially during logistic processes on nonmechanized humps. One of the main causes for the service life decrease of wheelsets is brake damage. To eliminate such brake damage on highways, on-board braking dis-tance regulators mounted on the locomotive are used. In the hump yards, using such systems is not possible, since under marshalling, cars are detached from the locomotive. In this regard, an industrial challenge turns up to design a similar in purpose braking distance regulator for humps through skidding. To solve this problem, we developed a method of controlling the speed of cars to be sorted, which complements the widely used technology of the shoe braking and avoids the formation of one-way sliders. The paper presents a skid adjuster, which excludes brake damage to the rolling stock wheels by the slides on the humps using the shoe braking techniques. The motion equation of the rolling stock equipped with a skid adjuster on the hump tracks is developed. In the result of this study, an equation of car motion in the system of “rolling stock Hughes regulator way” allowing to enter the working elements of Hughes controller to an existing and debugged algorithm of any slides with minimal change it.

Combined with block diagonalization (BD) methods, Tomlinson-Harashima (TH) precoding and vector perturbation (VP) are attractive non-linear precoding techniques for multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) broadcast channels. In this paper, we first briefly review several non- linear precoding schemes including BD-VP, TH and zero-forcing (TH-ZF) and TH-VP, and then derive the achievable sum rate of the hybrid TH-VP precoding. After that, we compare the achievable sum rates and diversity gains of these non-linear precoding schemes with zero-forcing VP (ZF-VP) and dirty paper coding (DPC). The achievable sum rate of TH-VP is shown to approach the sum capacity of DPC asymptotically and outperforms BD-VP, TH-ZF and ZF- VP.
