Objective: The ENT Scotland society (formerly known as the Scottish Otolaryngological Society) has two meetings a year and accepts oral presentations from trainees. This study aimed to identify publication rates from these meetings. Methods: Abstracts of the presentations are published in The Journal of Laryngology and Otology. A structured search on PubMed and Google Scholar was undertaken to identify which presentations from the 2005 to 2014 meetings have been published. Results: Of the 145 abstracts found, 60.7 per cent were presenting clinical research and 44.1 per cent were related to the head and neck subspecialty. Seventy-three abstracts (50.3 per cent) were associated with publication as a peer-reviewed article; otology papers were more likely to be published than those focusing on other subspecialties (64.3 per cent, p = 0.036). No correlation was found between publication and other factors. Conclusion: Presentations at the ENT Scotland meetings undergo unbiased peer review and are as likely to be published as those of other conferences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

background The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is the most challenging health crisis that we are facing today. Against the backdrop of this pandemic, it becomes imperative to study the effects of this infection on pregnancy outcome and its mode of delivery. Hence, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of COVID-19 infection on pregnancy as well as the outcome. Materials and methods In this retrospective observational analytical study, a total of 150 pregnant women were included in the study, from 1 September 2020 to 1 May 2021, most of them confirmed that positive COVID-19 by PCR, depending on questionaries' paper distributed to the infected pregnant women at that time in Babylon government. Results We observed that young females (<20 years) had the least chance of infection, rural areas were more vulnerable to infection than urban areas, employed pregnant women had a higher chance of infection than unemployed, and that the majority of women were treated at home. Of those infected patients, those who were infected during their third trimester were more likely to present with complications with their pregnancy (rather than COVID-19), such as IUGR and IUD etc. Regarding the mode of delivery, there is a slightly increased rate of caesarian section (CS) when compared with the typical population, after excluding the obstetric indication for CS, such as complete placenta prevea. Conclusion There is no significant effect of COVID-19 infection on maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnancy, despite a slight increase in preterm labor and C/S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mouth may be presented and understood in different ways, be subject to judgement by others and, as we age, may intrude on everyday life due to problems that affect oral health. However, research that considers older people's experiences concerning their mouths and teeth is limited. This paper reports on qualitative research with 43 people in England and Scotland, aged 65–91, exploring the significance of the mouth over the lifecourse. It uses the concept of 'mouth talk' to explore narratives of maintaining, losing and replacing teeth. Participants engaged in 'mouth talk' to downplay the impact of the mouth, demonstrate socially appropriate ageing, and distance themselves from 'real' old age by retaining a moral identity and sense of self. They also found means to challenge dominant discourses of ageing in how they spoke about missing teeth. Referring to Leder's notion of 'dys-appearance' and Gilleard and Higgs' work on the social imaginary of the fourth age, the study illustrates the ways in which 'mouth talk' can contribute to sustaining a sense of self in later life, presenting the ageing mouth, with and without teeth, as an absent presence. It also argues for the importance of listening to stories of the mouth in order to expand understanding of people's approaches to oral health in older age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This inaugural virtual issue of the Health Information and Libraries Journal ( HILJ) celebrates the contribution of health information in informing health and social care library and information provision. It has been drawn together to reflect the 2010 biennial Health Libraries Group conference theme of Keeping Information Centre Stage Amid Changing Scenery and includes a series of eleven key papers published in the journal over the last two years. This virtual issue mirrors the usual format of a journal issue with a review article, original articles and regular features on Learning and Teaching in Action, Using Evidence in Practice and International Perspectives and Initiatives. This special section of IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing presents extended versions of papers originally presented as part of the IEEE 33rd International Conference on Microelectronic Test Structures (ICMTS) which was hosted at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Originally planned to take place at the University’s South Hall Complex in April 2020, the impact of the global pandemic led to the difficult decision to move to a fully virtual conference held between 4th – 18th May 2020. Introduction: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) improves outcomes for frail patients; at FVRH this is delivered by the Frailty Intervention Team (FIT) comprising of senior nurses, allied health professionals (AHPs) and doctors. Faced with COVID-19, we took the opportunity to digitalise CGA documentation to preserve these benefits for patients whilst facing greater acuity, staffing and time pressures. An electronic solution was adopted to reduce paper-usage in COVID-receiving areas. Prior to COVID-19, CGA was recorded within case-notes, presenting challenges when patients were readmitted out-ofhours as these were stored off-site and not accessible out-of-hours. Method: Trakcare is the patient-management system in many Scottish hospitals. The Electronic Patient Record (EPR) was used to record pro-forma against admissions which were accessible and updatable for any patient 24–7-365. Patients meeting the Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) Frailty criteria were considered “frailty-positive”, with an e-alert added- reappearing on any re-admission. Providing no HIS-exclusion criteria, an electronic-CGA (e-CGA) was recorded or updated. The pro-forma designed contained information not immediately available to clerking practitioners. This evolved following discussion amongst the FIT to include information such as escalation-status, medicationarrangements and baseline cognition. Results: Over 13 weeks, 116 EPRs were reviewed. During weeks 1–3 (n=8, 12, 7 respectively), e-CGA completion averaged 31%. Following FIT collaboration, this rose to 82% (n=9) by week 12. Qualitative feedback from the MDT indicated that FIT, downstream wards and night-staff felt that having access to previous escalation-plans made immediate-management easier to determine, and discussions with familiesmore productive for patients. Conclusions: Development of the FVRH e-CGA is ongoing, with an electronic frailtyscreening tool being implemented to improve frailty-identification on admission to ensure correct streaming of patients to the FIT. We have demonstrated a cost-neutral method for improving access to CGA for patients using existing IT systems whilst protecting staff time, preserving patient care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
