Magnesium oxide (MgO)-graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites were prepared by the hydrothermal method at different temperatures. The effect of growth temperature on the structural, linear, and nonlinear optical (NLO) parameters was investigated. The decoration of MgO on GO sheets was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy analyses. The energy band-gaps of MgO-GO nanocomposites were calculated from UV-vis spectrum using Tauc plot. The NLO parameters of MgO-GO nanocomposites were calculated for the first time by the simple Z-scan technique with nanosecond Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm. The nonlinear absorption coefficient β and nonlinear refractive index n 2 for MgO-GO nanocomposites at the laser intensity of 1.1×108 W/cm2 were measured to be in the order of 10−7 cm/W and 10−12 cm2/W, respectively. The third-order NLO susceptibility of MgO-GO nanocomposites was measured in the order of 10−9 esu. The results showed that MgO-GO structures have negative nonlinearity as well as good nonlinear two-photon absorption at 532 nm. Furthermore, the NLO parameters increased by the enhancement of the growth temperature. As the investigation of new materials plays an important role in the advancement of optoelectronics, MgO-GO nanocomposites possess potential applications in NLO devices.

In this paper, we report an approach for tuning the surface morphology and phase of Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) by using an ultrafast laser in a one-step process. Four surface micro/nanostructures with specific phase states were sequentially formed by changing the pulse energy: the modified ripple structure, the completely crystallized structure, the ablated nanodots, and the ablated ripple structure. A high correlation existed between the surface micro/nanostructures and their property. Through integrated property–structure modulation, multifunctional optical recording could be achieved by using modified ripples with specific crystallized phase states. The geometric grating morphology caused by the volume shrinkage effect during crystallization enabled modified ripples to exhibit a structural color based on the grating’s diffraction effect. Moreover, the considerable change in the reflectivity of the crystallized area enabled easy grayscale identification. On the basis of the spatially resolved phase-transition threshold effect, the integrated modulation of the geometric nanograting proportion and degree of crystallization was conducted in multilevel states. Notably, different from the fixed ablated surface structures, the printed modified surface structures could be erased and rewritten by controlling its phase state. This paper presents a promising method for producing dynamic tunable metasurfaces, conducting optical anticounterfeiting, and achieving information storage.

Nanowires have garnered considerable attention in photonics and optoelectronics due to their unique features. Owing to the large surface area and significant potential of usage as a resonator and waveguide in photonic integrated circuits (PICs), nanowires have been applied in many research areas in nanophotonics. To enhance the properties of light emitting materials, the hybrid of nanowires and 2D materials has been deployed in many papers. This paper summarises recent studies on the application of various types of nanowires in photonics and optoelectronics, as well as the combination of nanowires and 2D materials. This review article introduces nanowires that act as resonators or/and waveguides to increase the performance of 2D materials used in PICs for light enhancement and guiding. Moreover, the review lays out the hybrid of nanowires and 2D materials that have been studied in the field of optoelectronics. The hybridization of nanowires and 2D materials for photonics and optoelectronics is discussed in this review for the outlook of future studies.

Terahertz switch is one of the key components of future communication, radar, and imaging systems. Limited by the strong electromagnetic coupling in subwavelength scale, the traditional terahertz switch is difficult to meet the increasing application requirements. In this paper, a parallel topology terahertz meta-chip switch based on the combination of equivalent circuit theory and electromagnetic coupling is proposed. The meta-chip is realized by adjusting the density of two-dimensional electron gas of InP-HEMT, which converts the electromagnetic coupling between the microstructure and microstrips. By using the 90 nm gate length InP-HEMT process, a C-ring loaded meta-chip is fabricated and tested in this paper. The results show an insertion loss lower than 1 dB with a 10 dB switching ratio, which is 20% higher than that without C-ring while ensuring the rather low insertion loss. It shows that the presented mechanism has positive significance for the design of terahertz band functional devices.

Integrated photonics offers attractive solutions for realizing combinational logic for high-performance computing. The integrated photonic chips can be further optimized using multiplexing techniques such as wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). In this paper, we propose a WDM-based electronic–photonic switching network (EPSN) to realize the functions of the binary decoder and the multiplexer, which are fundamental elements in microprocessors for data transportation and processing. We experimentally demonstrate its practicality by implementing a 3–8 (three inputs, eight outputs) switching network operating at 20 Gb/s. Detailed performance analysis and performance enhancement techniques are also given in this paper.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials were widely used in sensing owing to the tunable physical or chemical properties. For years, optical sensing attracted a massive amount of attention on account of high accuracy, high security, non-invasive measurement, and strong anti-interference ability. Among the various optical sensing schemes, multi-wavelength optical sensing (MWOS) is an important branch and widely adopted in optical image, spectroscopy, or bio/chemical research. However, no spectral selectivity, limited working wavelength range, or intrinsic instability makes conventional 2D materials unsuitable for MWOS. A new class of 2D materials, known as MXene, exhibits outstanding electronic, optical, and thermal properties, leading to new applications in optical sensing. In this paper, we propose an integrated photothermal optical sensor (PHOS) using Ti3C2Tx MXene films. Thanks to the inherent spectral dependence of Ti3C2Tx MXene over a broadband range, the proposed PHOS can respond to different wavelengths from visible to short-wavelength infrared. Because of the efficient photothermal conversion, the PHOS has a control efficiency up to 0.19 π · mW−1 · mm−1 under 980-nm laser pumping and shows a higher control efficiency under red light (690 nm) irradiation. The measured response time of the proposed PHOS is 23.4 μs. This paper brings MXene into chip-integrated optical sensing fields for the first time and shows the potential applications.

In recent years, sub-wavelength metamaterials-based light perfect absorbers have been the subject of many studies. The most frequently utilized absorber configuration is based on nanostructured plasmonic metals. However, two main drawbacks were raised for this design architecture. One is the fabrication complexity and large scale incompatibility of these nano units. The other one is the inherent limitation of these common metals which mostly operate in the visible frequency range. Recently, strong interference effects in lithography-free planar multilayer designs have been proposed as a solution for tackling these drawbacks. In this paper, we reveal the extraordinary potential of bismuth (Bi) metal in achieving light perfect absorption in a planar design through a broad wavelength regime. For this aim, we adopted a modeling approach based on the transfer matrix method (TMM) to find the ideal conditions for light perfect absorption. According to the findings of our modeling and numerical simulations, it was demonstrated that the use of Bi in the metal-insulator-metal-insulator (MIMI) configuration can simultaneously provide two distinct functionalities; a narrow near unity reflection response and an ultra-broadband near perfect absorption. The reflection behavior can be employed to realize additive color filters in the visible range, while the ultra-broadband absorption response of the design can fully harvest solar irradiation in the visible and near infrared (NIR) ranges. The findings of this paper demonstrate the extraordinary potential of Bi metal for the design of deep sub-wavelength optical devices.

In this paper, the influence of classical signals on quantum key distribution (QKD) is studied over multi-core fiber (MCF) when optical amplifiers exist. Firstly, the long-distance simultaneous transmission architectures of QKD and classical signals are proposed based on advanced asymmetric sending or not sending QKD (SNS-QKD) and classical Bennett–Brassard 1984-QKD (BB84-QKD), and the segment length between optical amplifiers can be adjusted according to requirement. Then, theoretical models of spontaneous Raman scattering noise and four-wave mixing noise are established based on the proposed architectures. Next, the calculation models of the secure key rate under the influence of noises from classical signals are derived. Finally, the experimental results show that the theoretical models match well with the experimental photons, and the maximum difference between experimental and simulated noise photons is less than 2.6 dB. Simulation results show that the performance of asymmetric SNS-QKD is better than that of BB84-QKD architecture when classical signals and quantum signals are transmitted in different cores of MCF.

Although traditional quantum-confined nanostructures e.g. regular quantum wells or quantum dots have achieved huge success in the field of semiconductor lasers for past decades, these traditional nanostructures are encountering the difficulty of enhancing device performance to a higher level due to their inherent gain bottleneck. In this paper, we are proposing a new super-gain nanostructure based on self-assembled well-wire complex energy-band engineering with InGaAs-based materials to break through the existing bottleneck. The nanostructure is constructed by utilizing the special strain-driven indium (In)-segregation and the growth orientation-dependent on-GaAs multi-atomic step effects to achieve the distinguished ultra-wide and uniform super-gain spectra. The structural details and its luminescence mechanism are investigated by multiple measurement means and theoretical modeling. The polarized gain spectra with the max fluctuation of −1 in 904 nm–998 nm for transverse electric (TE) mode and 904 nm–977 nm for transverse magnetic (TM) mode are simultaneously obtained with this nanostructure. Graphene is emerging as an ideal material for new-generation optoelectronic devices. In this paper, a novel graphene metasurface-based electrically switchable and tunable infrared light modulator has been proposed and theoretically studied. The functional modulator comprises a monolayer graphene sheet sandwiched in a Fabry–Perot (FP) like nanostructure consisting of a metal reflector, a dielectric spacer, and an ellipse patterned anisotropy antenna layer. As a result of the photon localization effect of the guided-mode resonance (GMR) in the FP structure, the graphene electroabsorption can be significantly enhanced to enable a high-performance light modulator. By fine-tuning the Fermi energy (E f) of graphene via controlling its bias-gate voltage, the proposed modulator can switch between a perfect absorber and a reflective polarization converter of high conversion efficiency (i.e., >90%) at 1550 nm. The conversion mechanism and the geometric dependences of the infrared light modulator have been investigated. We further demonstrated the tunability of the highly-efficient polarization converter over a broad spectrum by adjusting the real dispersion of E f. Our design concept provides an effective strategy for customizing novel optoelectronic devices by combining an electrically-tunable 2D material with a functional metasurface.

Chirality prevails in nature and is of great value for molecular biology, medicine, and bioscience. Due to the enhancement of chiroptical responses, chiral metasurfaces has attracted enormous attentions. In this paper, some novel polarization-sensitive transmission effects in terahertz chiral metasurfaces are exhibited. In the chiral metasurfaces whose unit cell consists of two basic resonators – a wire and a split ring resonator (SRR), we observe the asymmetrical transmission for circularly polarized state from the circular cross-polarization conversion spectra and the circular conversion dichroism (CCD). More importantly, we verify that the chiroptical activities can be affected by the coupling between the two resonators by simply moving their relative position in the terahertz metasurfaces. From the experimental and simulated results, we observe the distinguished variation in the circular cross-polarization conversion spectra and CCD, and combining with the theoretical analysis using coupled mode theory, we reveal that the chirality of the metasurfaces is strongly correlated to the coupling between the two modes determined by the wire and SRR. Finally, we demonstrate the coupling-enabled chirality by investigating the dependence of CCD on the coupling discrepancy with different relative positions of the two resonators. These findings offer the insights into the relationship between chirality and mode coupling and provide a theoretical method to design chiral metasurfaces and enhance the circular conversion dichroism, which have potential applications in the fields such as optical sensing, polarization imaging, and biological/chemical detection.

Silicon nitride (SiN) has surged into prominence as a material for photonic-integrated circuits (PICs) in the past decade, well regarded for its broadband transparency, compatibility with complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication processes and high optical bandgap that avoids two-photon absorption. However, current fabrication methods result in users having to choose between low thermal budgets and low losses, which are suboptimal given that both are necessary to facilitate a wide range of applications. Recently, works have emerged featuring PICs fabricated using deuterated silicon nitride (SiNx:D) – SiNx films grown using deuterated precursors instead of conventional hydrogenated ones. This decreases material absorption near the telecommunications bands at 1.55 µm previously present due to parasitic silicon–hydrogen and nitrogen–hydrogen bonds, attaining low-loss PICs realised using a low temperature, back-end-of-line CMOS-compatible fabrication plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition process. These devices have shown promise for both linear and nonlinear applications and the platform has the potential to be instrumental in realising highly efficient chips with co-packaged electronics and photonics devices. This paper reviews recent developments on the SiNx:D platform and provides a glance at future advancements for this highly promising material.

Multilayer films with continuously varying indices for each layer have attracted great deal of attention due to their superior optical, mechanical, and thermal properties. However, difficulties in fabrication have limited their application and study in scientific literature compared to multilayer films with fixed index layers. In this work we propose a neural network based inverse design technique enabled by a differentiable analytical solver for realistic design and fabrication of single material variable-index multilayer films. This approach generates multilayer films with excellent performance under ideal conditions. We furthermore address the issue of how to translate these ideal designs into practical useful devices which will naturally suffer from growth imperfections. By integrating simulated systematic and random errors just as a deposition tool would into the optimization process, we demonstrated that the same neural network that produced the ideal device can be retrained to produce designs compensating for systematic deposition errors. Furthermore, the proposed approach corrects for systematic errors even in the presence of random fabrication imperfections. The results outlined in this paper provide a practical and experimentally viable approach for the design of single material multilayer film stacks for an extremely wide variety of practical applications with high performance.

Electrical switching of nanophotonic structural color elements is a promising approach towards addressable color switching pixels for next generation reflective displays. However, electrical switching between the primary colors to colorless near-white state remains a challenge. Here, we present a reversible electrical switching approach, relying on the electrocoagulation of Ag nanoparticles between silicon nanostructures that support Mie resonances. The electrodeposited Ag nanoparticles enable the excitation of the hybrid plasmon-Mie resonance as supported on Ag-silicon nanostructures, resulting in a large spectral transformation. Importantly, this process is reversible. This device design outperforms other designs in terms of electrotonic color control since it is highly stable and reliable for use in high-resolution reflective displays, such as colored electronic papers and smart display glass, where the combination is scalable to other nanostructure designs and electrolytic solutions.

Fabrication of nanostructures with a feature size much smaller than the laser wavelength is challenging due to the optical diffraction limit. It’s well known that the irradiation of polarized ultrafast laser generates periodic nanostructures, so called laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS). Owing to the modulated field, the surface is periodically ablated to form specific patterns, which can be used for some photonic applications including surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In this paper, we investigate the morphologies of LIPSS on ZnO substrates by mask-less ultrafast laser processing. By adjusting the laser processing parameters, including fluence, pulse number, polarization, and pulse duration, the homogenous nanostrip array and nanopillar array are created. Furthermore, by adjusting the laser fluence, a single nanogroove with a width of ∼20 nm and a single nanocavity with a diameter of ∼24 nm are created. The gold nanoparticles are then coated on the ZnO nanopillar array for SERS application. We found that the concentration of defects in ZnO substrate is increased by the laser irradiation, which is beneficial for SERS performances to achieve an enhancement factor of SERS as high as 2.28 × 107.

Multiport interferometers based on integrated beamsplitter meshes have recently captured interest as a platform for many emerging technologies. In this paper, we present a novel architecture for multiport interferometers based on the sine–cosine fractal decomposition of a unitary matrix. Our architecture is unique in that it is self-similar, enabling the construction of modular multi-chiplet devices. Due to this modularity, our design enjoys improved resilience to hardware imperfections as compared to conventional multiport interferometers. Additionally, the structure of our circuit enables systematic truncation, which is key in reducing the hardware footprint of the chip as well as compute time in training optical neural networks, while maintaining full connectivity. Numerical simulations show that truncation of these meshes gives robust performance even under large fabrication errors. This design is a step forward in the construction of large-scale programmable photonics, removing a major hurdle in scaling up to practical machine learning and quantum computing applications.

Spatial visualization of mode distribution of light scattering from plasmonic nanostructures is of vital importance for understanding the scattering mechanism and applications based on these plasmonic nanostructures. A long unanswered question in how the spatial information of scattered light from a single plasmonic nanostructure can be recovered in the far-field, under the constraints of the diffraction limit of the detection or imaging optical system. In this paper, we reported a theoretical model on retrieving local spatial information of scattered light by plasmonic nanostructures in a far-field optical imaging system. In the far-field parametric sin δ images, singularity points corresponding to near-field hot spots of the edge mode and the gap mode were resolved for gold ring and split rings with subwavelength diameters and feature sizes. The experimental results were verified with Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation in the near-field and far-field, for the edge mode and the gap mode at 566 nm and 534 nm, respectively. In sin δ image of split-ring, two singularity points associated with near-field hot spots were visualized and resolved with the characteristic size of 90 and 100 nm, which is far below the diffraction limit. The reported results indicate the feasibility of characterizing the spatial distribution of scattering light in the far-field and with sub-wavelength resolution for single plasmonic nanostructures with sub-wavelength feature sizes.

Metallic nanostructures exhibit localized surface plasmons (LSPs), which offer unprecedented opportunities for advanced photonic materials and devices. Following resonant photoexcitation, LSPs quickly dephase, giving rise to a distribution of energetic ‘hot’ electrons in the metal. These out-of-equilibrium carriers undergo ultrafast internal relaxation processes, nowadays pivotal in a variety of applications, from photodetection and sensing to the driving of photochemical reactions and ultrafast all-optical modulation of light. Despite the intense research activity, exploitation of hot carriers for real-world nanophotonic devices remains extremely challenging. This is due to the complexity inherent to hot carrier relaxation phenomena at the nanoscale, involving short-lived out-of-equilibrium electronic states over a very broad range of energies, in interaction with thermal electronic and phononic baths. These issues call for a comprehensive understanding of ultrafast hot electron dynamics in plasmonic nanostructures. This paper aims to review our contribution to the field: starting from the fundamental physics of plasmonic nanostructures, we first describe the experimental techniques used to probe hot electrons; we then introduce a numerical model of ultrafast nanoscale relaxation processes, and present examples in which experiments and modelling are combined, with the aim of designing novel optical functionalities enabled by ultrafast hot-electron dynamics.

In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrated photothermal nonlinearities of both forward and backward scattering intensities from quasi-perfect absorbing silicon-based metasurface with only λ/7 thickness. The metasurface is efficiently heated up by photothermal effect under laser irradiation, which in turn modulates the scattering spectra via thermo-optical effect. Under a few milliwatt continuous-wave excitation at the resonance wavelength of the metasurface, backward scattering cross-section doubles, and forward scattering cross-section reduces to half. Our study opens up the all-optical dynamical control of the scattering directionality, which would be applicable to silicon photonic devices.

Achromatic devices present unique capabilities in efficient manipulation of waves and have wide applications in imaging and communication systems. However, the research of achromatic devices is limited by the narrow bandwidth, low efficiency as well as large configurations. In this paper, we propose a general strategy to design spin-locked achromatic metasurface with broadband and high efficiency properties in microwave region. A multi-resonant model is used to control the dispersion within a wide bandwidth by tuning its resonant intensity, resonance numbers as well as resonant frequency. As a proof of the concept, two achromatic meta-devices with ultra-thin profile at microwave frequency are experimentally investigated. The achromatic deflector can reflect the normal incident waves to the same angle within 9.5 to 11.5 GHz, while the other achromatic lens can focus the excitations at the same focal points. The experimentally working efficiency of the meta-devices fluctuates around 71–82% and 57–65% within the target working bandwidth, respectively. Moreover, our meta-devices can preserve the charity of the excitations. The scheme of this research shows great advances in the design of broadband and high-efficiency achromatic devices which can also be applied to other frequency ranges and inspires the realization of ultrabroadband and high-efficiency metadevices.

Silicon-based optical switch is one of the key components for on-chip optical interconnect systems, and mode division multiplexing technology has been employed to boost optical switches’ channel capacity. However, the majority of the proven multimode optical switches have a switching time in the microsecond range, which is insufficient for some applications. In this paper, we design and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed dual-mode 4 × 4 optical switch based on a mode-diversity scheme, composed of four pairs of mode multiplexers and de-multiplexers, and two optimized single-mode 4 × 4 optical switches. Fast switching is enabled based on the carrier dispersion effect. At the same time, we improve the performances of the optical switch by reducing the number of optical switch units used in the 4 × 4 Spanke–Beneš architecture. Its power consumptions are reduced by ∼17%. Its insertion losses are within 8.8 dB in the wavelength range of 1525–1565 nm in the both sates of “through” and “all-cross”, while the optical signal-to-noise ratios are larger than 12.8 dB. Also, 50 Gbps data transmission experiments verify the device’s data transmission functionality.

Microscale infrared thermal emitters are highly demanded in a variety of applications such as micro-molecular thermal sensing and micro-thermal imaging. In this paper, we propose a micro-meta-cavity array through combining nanohole metasurfaces and Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavity. Based on this design, integrated multiband micro-thermal emitters covering 7 − 9 μm and 10 − 14 μm wavelength ranges with high spatial resolution near wavelength scale has been theoretically and experimentally demonstrated simultaneously, providing the possibility for microscale infrared sources. In addition, narrow thermal emission bandwidth is enabled by the interaction between the resonant modes of metasurface and the FP cavity mode in meta-cavity. The emission features of each meta-cavity are investigated and analyzed through thermal imaging. Furthermore, polarization, wavelength and spatial multiplexing thermal emission with high spatial resolution is also experimentally demonstrated utilizing nanohole patterns. We anticipate that this thermal emission microchip can be possibly employed in micro-molecular sensing and micro-thermal imaging in the future.

Chirality (C) is a fundamental symmetry property of objects. Detecting and distinguishing molecular chirality in the infrared spectrum is important in life sciences, biology, and chemistry. In this paper, we demonstrate an achiral metasurface based on a gaped dual-germanium-dimer array for enhanced mid-infrared chiral sensing under both circularly polarized light (CPL) and linearly polarized light (LPL) excitations. With the metasurface, strong electric and magnetic dipole resonances with large field enhancement can be generated, resulting in an accessible superchiral hotspot in the dimer gaps under both excitation modes. The maximum electric and magnetic field enhancements exceed 220 and 100 for the bare metasurface, and exceed 70 and 60 for the metasurface coated with a 50 nm chiral biolayer under both excitations, respectively. Importantly, a high volume-averaged C enhancement C E_ave of 241 (444) and C E_ave_bio of 161 (102) under CPL (LPL) excitation can be achieved for the bare metasurface and it coated with the chiral biolayer, respectively. These results may open up new possibilities for ultrasensitive vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and rotational optical dispersion (ORD) spectroscopy in the mid-infrared range.

In this paper, we demonstrate the first example of phonon-assisted hot luminescence (PAHL) emission from silicon (Si) spheres (diameter > 100nm) without using the plasmonic effect or quantum confinement effect. Instead, we excite the hot luminescence of Si by a strong thin-film-cavity-enhanced magnetic dipole resonance. The thin-film cavity (80 nm SiO2/Ag) shows a strong co-enhancement with the magnetic dipole resonance of Si sphere (diameter = 120 nm). The concentrated electromagnetic fields induce significant light–matter interaction. Our Si sphere coupled with a thin-film cavity achieves a 10-fold field enhancement relative to the Si sphere without an enhancement substrate. Furthermore, we experimentally use cavity-enhanced magnetic dipole resonance to a 50-fold enhancement in PAHL. The measured internal quantum efficiency for the visible light emitted from the Si spheres was approximately 2.4%. Furthermore, we demonstrate the tunability of emission peaks merely by adjusting the sizes of Si spheres using thermal oxidation and etching processes. For comparison, we calculated the peak wavelength (λ peak) sensitivities (Δλ peak/ΔDiameter) of Si spheres and Si QDs through Mie theory and effective mass approximation, respectively. The predicated peak sensitivities of the Si spheres ranged from 1.3 to 3.2; they were much more controllable than those of the Si QDs (200–400). Thus, the peak wavelengths of the PAHL of the Si spheres could be modulated and controlled much more precisely and readily than that of the Si QDs. With the tunability and strong electromagnetic field confinement, the cavity-enhanced magnetic dipole resonance appears to have great potential in the development of all-optical processing based on Si photonics.

Metalens has emerged as an important optical block in free-space optical systems, which shows excellent performance. Even the metalens based on gradient index (GRIN) profiles can be implemented for on-chip beam focusing behavior. However, for most previous schemes, the GRIN metalenses can only achieve on-chip beam focusing behavior in one dimension, which limits their applications in low-loss waveguide interconnecting or fiber-to-chip coupling. In this paper, an on-chip half Maxwell’s fisheye lens based on GRIN profiles with subwavelength features, integrated with silicon waveguides, is experimentally demonstrated. Benefitting from the index distribution and beam focusing characteristics of the half Maxwell’s fisheye lens, an on-chip beam transforming can be achieved for transverse electric (TE) fundamental mode in two waveguides with different heights and widths. The simulated 1 dB bandwidth can reach 1100 nm, which exhibits great prospects in integrated photonic circuits. The measured insertion loss of an on-chip 5.4 μm-length lens is less than 1 dB to connect a 220 nm-height, 8 μm-wide waveguide, and a 60 nm-height, 0.5 μm-wide waveguide in the wavelength range of 1280–1620 nm.

The frequency mixing property of time-modulated metasurfaces, attributed to the well-known phenomenon of temporal photonic transition, has led to several exotic functionalities in the last lustrum. Based on this concept, we demonstrate the possibility of achieving nonreciprocal responses in the near-infrared regime via combining a time-modulated platform and a static high-Q metasurface. In particular, the temporal metasurface is designed to up-convert the incident tone to the first higher-order harmonic, while the static platform is implemented to establish a filtering behavior with respect to the incident frequency. It is shown that while the receiver port acquires the transmitted signal in the forward direction, the amount of received power becomes negligible under the time-reversal scenario, which indicates the presented configuration exhibits different optical responses from opposite directions. In addition, the role of operating wavelength and the modulation frequency on the power isolation level are investigated, and it is demonstrated that by appropriate selection, the isolation level can reach −30 dB. Since this is the first time a nonreciprocal response is obtained in the near-infrared regime via a pure temporal modulation, we believe the idea of this paper can be of utmost importance in various applications, such as tunable optical isolators.

Super-resolution optical microscopy, which gives access to finer details of objects, is highly desired for fields of nanomaterial, nanobiology, nanophotonics, etc. Many efforts, including tip optimization and illumination optimization etc., have been made in both near-field and far-field super-resolution microscopy to achieve a spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit. The development of vector light fields opens up a new avenue for super-resolution optical microscopy via special illumination modes. Cylindrical vector beam (CVB) has been verified to enable resolution improvement in tip-scanning imaging, nonlinear imaging, stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy, subtraction imaging, superoscillation imaging, etc. This paper reviews recent advances in CVB-based super-resolution imaging. We start with an introduction of the fundamentals and properties of CVB. Next, strategies for CVB based super-resolution imaging are discussed, which are mainly implemented by tight focusing, depletion effect, plasmonic nanofocusing, and polarization matching. Then, the roadmap of super-resolution imaging with CVB illumination in the past two decades is summarized. The typical CVB-based imaging techniques in fields of both near-field and far-field microscopy are introduced, including tip-scanning imaging, nonlinear imaging, STED, subtraction imaging, and superoscillation imaging. Finally, challenges and future directions of CVB-illuminated super-resolution imaging techniques are discussed.

Multichannel metasurfaces become one of the most significant development trends, as they exhibit versatile manipulation abilities on electromagnetic fields and provide a promising approach to constitute compact devices with various complex functions, especially in optical encryption due to its capabilities of multichannel, high complexity, and high concealment. However, the existent multichannel metasurfaces based optical encryption technology can only realize two channels in the near-field, or perform three channels in near- and far-field. In this paper, a four-channel display metasurface used to encrypt information by three optical parameters as security keys is firstly proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which is different from the previous three-channel metasurface combined nanoprinting and hologram in near- and far-field. The novel design strategy of the four-channel metasurface can effectively enhance the information capacity and increase the difficulty of leaks without causing manufacturing challenges and additional costs. In addition, the simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the designed metasurface with four independent channels can separately display distinguishable nanoprinting images under decoding keys of special optical parameters. The proposed four-channel display metasurface with advantages of high capacity and ultracompactness will pave a way for multichannel applications in nano display, information storage, optical anticounterfeiting, and other relevant fields.

To meet the growing demand for photonic integration and device miniaturization, planar diffractive Fresnel zone plates (FZPs) are widely applied in integrated optical systems. However, challenges remain in fabricating FZPs with high efficiency and satisfying the requirement for cross-scale fabrication. This paper details a high efficiency method for fabricating ultrathin FZPs of different scales on metal films by using holographic femtosecond lasers. The FZPs are split into a series of element patterns that are printed in order by using corresponding modulated femtosecond pulses. The fabricated FZPs are spliced by the printed element structures with no FZP size limitation in theory. FZPs with an area varying across three orders of magnitude are presented to demonstrate the capability of cross-scale fabrication. The fabricated FZPs possess an excellent broadband focusing and imaging ability in the visible spectrum. Furthermore, the fabrication of other functional ultrathin lenses, such as axial multifocal zone plates, petal-like zone plates, and FZP arrays, is described, revealing the wide potential for the flexible and scalable fabrication method in on-chip integrated optical systems.

Passively mode-locked lasers have been widely investigated as one of the effective methods to obtain ultrashort pulses. As an important part of passively mode-locked fiber lasers, the exploration of 2D material-based saturable absorber has become one of the hotspots in ultrafast photonics in recent years. Germanene, a novel 2D Dirac material, with ultrafast optical response and broadband optical absorption, is a promising alternative material for saturable absorber in mode-locked fiber lasers. In this paper, germanium nanosheets are prepared via liquid-phase exfoliated method, with the saturable absorption property systematically characterized in three major wavebands of the near-infrared region. The generation of ultrashort pulses based on germanene saturable absorber in fiber lasers is further realized, in a broad waveband (1000 nm) centered at 1061.1, 1559.3 and 1883.5 nm, respectively. In addition, noise-like pulses operation with central wavelength of 1558.6 nm is also obtained, and the formation of rogue waves is further demonstrated via statistical analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental verification of the broadband saturable absorption property of germanene-based devices, covering three major fiber laser wavelengths from 1.0 to 2.0 μm.

When assembled in periodic arrangements, metallic nanostructures (NSs) support plasmonic surface lattice (SL) resonances resulting from long-range interactions these surface lattice resonances differ radically from localized surface plasmon (LSP). Similarly to the hybridization of LSP resonances, observed in short-range interactions, we demonstrate the possibility to generate a hybridization of surface lattice (SL) plasmon resonances, by the excitation of grazing order diffraction within the metasurface. This hybridization leads to the emergence of bonding and anti-bonding modes. If hybridization of LSP modes has been widely described in recent literature, there is still no experimental proof-of-concept reporting such hybridization with SL plasmon resonances. We fill this gap in the present paper by considering surfaces made of binary arrays with unit cells made of two gold disks of distinct diameters. We demonstrate the possibility to maximize or cancel the interaction between the hybridized SL resonances by simply controlling the distance between particles. All our experimental results are supported by FDTD calculations. The hybridization of SL modes results in much richer hybridization scenario in terms of wavelength and quality factor control, compared to a hybridization of LSP in a short-range configuration. It offers unprecedented opportunities to generate innovative optical devices, with high flexible tunability.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a newly emerging human infectious disease that continues to develop new variants. A crucial step in the quest to reduce the infection is the development of rapid and reliable virus detectors. Here, we report a chip scale photonic sensing device consisting of a silicon-nitride double microring resonator (MRR) for detecting SARS-CoV-2 in clinical samples. The sensor is implemented by surface activation of one of the MRRs, acting as a probe, with DNA primers for SARS-CoV-2 RNA, whereas the other MRR is used as a reference. The performance of the sensor is determined by applying different amounts of SARS-CoV-2 complementary RNA. As will be shown in the paper, our device detects the RNA fragments at concentrations of 10 cp/μL and with sensitivity of 750 nm/RIU. As such, it shows a promise toward the implementation of label-free, small form factor, CMOS compatible biosensor for SARS-CoV-2, which is also environment, temperature, and pressure independent. Our approach can also be used for detecting other SARS-CoV-2 genes, as well as other viruses and pathogens.

Optical metasurfaces have great potential to overcome the functional limitations of conventional optical devices. In addition to polarization- or wavelength-multiplexed metasurfaces, angle-multiplexed metasurfaces can provide new degrees of freedom, enabling previously unrealized complex functionality in diverse applications such as LiDAR, augmented reality glasses, and imaging. However, there have been fundamental trade-offs in transmission efficiency and angular sensitivity for practically important paraxial rays. In this paper, we overcome this limitation by breaking mirror symmetries of single-layer metasurface structures. Based on an effective medium theory, we intuitively explain which material parameters affect the sensitivity and efficiency and prove that high sensitivity and high efficiency can be achieved simultaneously by breaking the mirror symmetry. Based on this, we propose optimized metasurfaces for two applications: an angle-multiplexed beam-steering device with up to 93% relative efficiency and an angle-multiplexed metalens array that can break the fundamental resolution–density trade-off of microlens arrays with high efficiency. The proposed angle-selective designs could pave the way for the development of new classes of compact optical devices with novel functions.

Neuromorphic photonic processors based on resonator weight banks are an emerging candidate technology for enabling modern artificial intelligence (AI) in high speed, analog systems. These purpose-built analog devices implement vector multiplications with the physics of resonator devices, offering efficiency, latency, and throughput advantages over equivalent electronic circuits. Along with these advantages, however, often comes the difficult challenges of compensation for fabrication variations and environmental disturbances. In this paper we review sources of variation and disturbances from our experiments, as well as mathematically define quantities that model them. Then, we introduce how the physics of resonators can be exploited to weight and sum multiwavelength signals. Finally, we outline automated design and control methodologies necessary to create practical, manufacturable, and high accuracy/precision resonator weight banks that can withstand operating conditions in the field. Projection photolithography using an extreme-ultraviolet light source is the core technology that has enabled patterning on the scale of a few nanometers that is required for modern electronic chips. However, this high-end system is neither affordable nor needed for photonics where critical feature sizes are of 100s of nanometers (or of submicron). Although electron-beam lithography can provide a means for photonic device fabrication, it suffers from extremely low throughput. Therefore, a lithographic technique for submicron pattern generation at high throughput and low cost is in high demand. This group recently showed that maskless digital photolithography (MDPL), a convenient and versatile photolithographic technique that requires no photomask, could potentially address this demand by demonstrating photonic crystal (PhC) patterns with submicron periodicity and associated PhC band-edge lasers. In this paper, we report the fabrication of a PhC L3 cavity laser, which contains irregular air holes in terms of their positions and sizes, using the MDPL technique. Successful generation of such an aperiodic and nontrivial submicron pattern requires thorough understanding and scrupulous manipulation on light diffraction. Our achievements should provide the concrete foundation upon which compact, versatile, convenient, speedy, and economical lithographic tools for arbitrary submicron pattern generation can be developed.

Plasmonic nanoantennas have the ability to confine and enhance incident electromagnetic fields into very sub-wavelength volumes, while at the same time efficiently radiating energy to the far-field. These properties have allowed plasmonic nanoantennas to be extensively used for exciting quantum emitters-such as molecules and quantum dots-and also for the extraction of photons from them for measurements in the far-field. Due to electromagnetic reciprocity, it is expected that plasmonic nanoantennas radiate energy as efficiently as an external source can couple energy to them. In this paper, we adopt a multipole expansion (Mie theory) and numerical simulations to show that although reciprocity holds, certain plasmonic antennas radiate energy much more efficiently than one can couple energy into them. This work paves the way towards designing plasmonic antennas with specific properties for applications where the near-to-far-field relationship is of high significance, such as: surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, strong coupling at room temperature, and the engineering of quantum states in nanoplasmonic devices., 22 pages (1.5 linespacing), 6 figures

With the drafting of the 6G white paper, terahertz (THz) modulators reshow profound significance in wireless communication, data storage, and imaging. Active tuning of THz waves through hybrid meta-structure incorporated with smart materials has attracted keen interest due to the deliberate structural design and dynamic transition of material properties. However, until now, these meta-devices have usually been responsive to a single driving field, such as electrical, thermal, or optical stimuli, which hinders their applicability for multidimensional manipulation of THz waves. Herein, to the best of our knowledge, a Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3–silicon hybrid meta-modulator to achieve opposite tuning of the amplitude characteristic with two different types of stimuli is proposed for the first time. When driven by an external voltage, the proposed meta-modulator exhibits enhanced transmittance. In contrast, the transmission coefficient gradually decays as the external current increases. This outstanding performance is systematically studied by analyzing the carrier transport in the meta-structure as well as the change in the dielectric constant. Our research provides a novel idea for the development of actively tunable THz meta-devices and paves the way for robust multifunctionality in electrically controlled THz switching, and biosensors.

With recent advances in nanofabrication technology, various metallic gap structures with gap widths reaching a few to sub-nanometer, and even ‘zero-nanometer’, have been realized. At such regime, metallic gaps not only exhibit strong electromagnetic field confinement and enhancement, but also incorporate various quantum phenomena in a macroscopic scale, finding applications in ultrasensitive detection using nanosystems, enhancement of light–matter interactions in low-dimensional materials, and ultralow-power manipulation of electromagnetic waves, etc. Therefore, moving beyond nanometer to ‘zero-nanometer’ can greatly diversify applications of metallic gaps and may open the field of dynamic ‘gaptronics.’ In this paper, an overview is given on wafer-scale metallic gap structures down to zero-nanometer gap width limit. Theoretical description of metallic gaps from sub-10 to zero-nanometer limit, various wafer-scale fabrication methods and their applications are presented. With such versatility and broadband applicability spanning visible to terahertz and even microwaves, the field of ‘gaptronics’ can be a central building block for photochemistry, quantum optical devices, and 5/6G communications.

Opening a new door to tailoring electromagnetic (EM) waves, temporal boundaries have attracted the attention of researchers in recent years, which have led to many intriguing applications. However, the current theoretical approaches are far from enough to handle the complicated temporal systems. In this paper, we develop universal matrix formalism, paired with a unique coordinate transformation technique. The approach can effectively deal with temporally stratified structures with complicated material anisotropy and arbitrary incidence angles. This formulation is applied to various practical systems, enabling the solution of these temporal boundary related problems in a simple and elegant fashion, and also facilitating a deep insight into the fundamental physics.

It is the basic characteristic of pure vortex light that there is a phase singularity at the origin. Such a singularity may be multiple degenerate, which determines the order of vortex light. Singularities splitting phenomenon means that singularities no longer concentrate at the origin but distribute around the space, usually occurring in impure vortex light. In this paper, we demonstrate the singularities splitting phenomenon and propose an analysis method, based on which one may rapidly estimate the modal components of impure vortex light. As two common singularity discrimination methods, the spiral and fork wire interference patterns are compared in distinguishing splitting singularities. The most widely used spiral interference pattern is revealed to be the worst form because of the low resolution. Instead, the fork wire interference pattern is with higher and easily adjusted resolution. 1‰ impurity is still able to be distinguished through fork wire interference patterns in the experiment.

Computing metasurfaces are two-dimensional artificial nanostructures capable of performing mathematical operations on the input electromagnetic field, including its amplitude, phase, polarization, and frequency distributions. Rapid progress in the development of computing metasurfaces provide exceptional abilities for all-optical image processing, including the edge-enhanced imaging, which opens a broad range of novel and superior applications for real-time pattern recognition. In this paper, we review recent progress in the emerging field of computing metasurfaces for all-optical image processing, focusing on innovative and promising applications in optical analog operations, image processing, microscopy imaging, and quantum imaging.

This paper reviews recent advances in the research and development of graphene-based plasmonic metamaterials for terahertz (THz) laser transistors. The authors’ theoretical discovery on THz laser transistors in 2007 was realized as a distributed-feedback dual-gate graphene-channel field-effect transistor (DFB-DG-GFET) in 2018, demonstrating ∼0.1 µW single-mode emission at 5.2 THz and ∼80 µW amplified spontaneous 1–7.6 THz emission at 100 K. To realize room-temperature, dry-cell-battery operating intense THz lasing with fast direct modulation, various approaches based on graphene plasmonic metamaterials are investigated and introduced as real device implementations, including (i) replacement of the laser photonic cavity with plasmonic cavity enormously improving the THz photon field confinement with larger gain overlapping, (ii) introduction of THz amplification of stimulated emission via current-driven graphene Dirac plasmons (GDPs), and (iii) controlling the parity and time-reversal symmetry of GDPs enabling ultrafast direct gain-switch modulation. Possible real device structures and design constraints are discussed and addressed toward coherent light sources applicable to future 6G- and 7G-class THz wireless communication systems.

The simultaneous and independent measurement of multiple movement forms is a significant issue to be solved in research. In this paper, we proposed a method that combines the self-interference of conjugated optical vortices and external interference of plane waves, and successfully realize the independent measurement of both rotation and rectilinear motion. Three kinds of interference schemes based on vortex beams are analyzed theoretically and verified experimentally. The results show that the double interference between conjugated optical vortices and Gaussian beam can detect the motion along and perpendicular to the beam propagation direction even under complex motion background, providing a powerful way to detect the multiple movement forms of a target. Our work may pave a new way for the detection of spatial noncooperative targets and stimulate the invention of new detection equipment.

Light’s orbital angular momentum (OAM) with inherent mode orthogonality has been suggested as a new way to the optical encryption. However, the dependence of annular intensity profiles on the topological charge complicates nanoscale light–matter interactions and hampers the ultra-secure encryption application. In this paper, we demonstrate ultra-secure image encryption by tightly focusing perfect optical vortex (POV) beams with controllable annular intensity profiles and OAM states. A simple scheme composed of single spatial light modulator to implement Fourier transform of an ideal Bessel mode with both amplitude and phase modulations is proposed to generate radius-controllable POV in tightly focused beams. Such focused POV beams with identical intensity profiles but varied local OAM density are applied to disorder-coupled gold nanorod aggregates to selectively excite electromagnetic hot spots for encoding information through photothermal deformation. As such, ultra-secure image encryption in OAM states of POV beams in combination with different polarizations can be achieved. Our results lay the ground for diverse nanophotonic applications harnessing the OAM division of POV beams.

Multimode fibers (MMF) were initially developed to transmit digital information encoded in the time domain. There were few attempts in the late 60s and 70s to transmit analog images through MMF. With the availability of digital spatial modulators, practical image transfer through MMFs has the potential to revolutionize medical endoscopy. Because of the fiber’s ability to transmit multiple spatial modes of light simultaneously, MMFs could, in principle, replace the millimeters-thick bundles of fibers currently used in endoscopes with a single fiber, only a few hundred microns thick. That, in turn, could potentially open up new, less invasive forms of endoscopy to perform high-resolution imaging of tissues out of reach of current conventional endoscopes. Taking endoscopy by its general meaning as looking into, we review in this paper novel ways of imaging and transmitting images using a machine learning approach. Additionally, we review recent work on using MMF to perform machine learning tasks. The advantages and disadvantages of using machine learning instead of conventional methods is also discussed. Methods of imaging in scattering media and particularly MMFs involves measuring the phase and amplitude of the electromagnetic wave, coming out of the MMF and using these measurements to infer the relationship between the input and the output of the MMF. Nanoscale particles and structures hold promise in circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy for overcoming the weakness of molecular CD signals. Significant effort have been made to characterize nanophotonic CD enhancement and find efficient ways to boost molecular chirality, but the best solution is yet to be found. In this paper, we present a rigorous analytic study of the nanophotonic CD enhancement of typical nanoparticles. We consider metallic and dielectric nanoparticles capped with chiral molecules and analyze the effect of multipolar nanoparticles on the molecular CD. We identify the spectral features of the molecular CD resulting from the electric and magnetic resonances of nanoparticles and suggest better ways to boost molecular chirality. We also clarify the contribution of particle scattering and absorption to the molecular CD and the dependence on particle size. Our work provides an exact analytic approach to nanophotonic CD enhancement and offers a rule for selecting the most efficient particle for sensitive molecular chirality detection.

The insight that optical vortex beams carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), which emerged in Leiden about 30 years ago, has since led to an ever expanding range of applications and follow-up studies. This paper starts with a short personal account of how these concepts arose. This is followed by a description of some recent ideas where the coupling of transverse orbital and spin angular momentum (SAM) in tightly focused laser beams produces interesting new effects. The deflection of a focused light beam by an atom in the focus is reminiscent of the Magnus effect known from aerodynamics. Momentum conservation dictates an accompanying light force on the atom, transverse to the optical axis. As a consequence, an atom held in an optical tweezer will be trapped at a small distance of up to $\lambda/2\pi$ away from the optical axis, which depends on the spin state of the atom and the magnetic field direction. Three-dimensional (3D) printing enables the fabrication of complex, highly customizable structures, which are difficult to fabricate using conventional fabrication methods. Recently, the concept of four-dimensional (4D) printing has emerged, which adds active and responsive functions to 3D-printed structures. Deployable or adaptive structures with desired structural and functional changes can be fabricated using 4D printing; thus, 4D printing can be applied to actuators, soft robots, sensors, medical devices, and active and reconfigurable photonic devices. The shape of 3D-printed structures can be transformed in response to external stimuli, such as heat, light, electric and magnetic fields, and humidity. Light has unique advantages as a stimulus for active devices because it can remotely and selectively induce structural changes. There have been studies on the light activation of nanomaterial composites, but they were limited to rather simple planar structures. Recently, the light activation of 3D-printed complex structures has attracted increasing attention. However, there has been no comprehensive review of this emerging topic yet. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of the light activation of 3D-printed structures. First, we introduce representative smart materials and general shape-changing mechanisms in 4D printing. Then, we focus on the design and recent demonstration of remote light activation, particularly detailing photothermal activations based on nanomaterial composites. We explain the light activation of 3D-printed structures from the millimeter to sub-micrometer scale.

The phase modulator is a key component in optical communications for its phase modulation functions. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a variety of ultra-compact high-efficiency graphene phase modulators (GPMs) based on metal–nanoribbon integrated hybrid plasmonic waveguides in the near-infrared region. Benefiting from the good in-plane mode polarization matching and strong hybrid surface plasmon polariton and graphene interaction, the 20 μm-length GPM can achieve excellent phase modulation performance with a good phase and amplitude decoupling effect, a low insertion loss around 0.3 dB/μm, a high modulation efficiency with V π L π of 118.67 V μm at 1.55 μm, which is 1–3 orders improvement compared to the state-of-the-art graphene modulators. Furthermore, it has a wide modulation bandwidth of 67.96 GHz, a low energy consumption of 157.49 fJ/bit, and a wide operating wavelength ranging from 1.3 to 1.8 μm. By reducing the overlap width of the graphene–Al2O3–graphene capacitor, the modulation bandwidth and energy consumption of the modulator can be further improved to 370.36 GHz and 30.22 fJ/bit, respectively. These compact and energy-efficient GPMs may hold a key to various high-speed telecommunications, interconnects, and other graphene-based integrated photonics applications.
