Can student performance on computer-based tests (CBT) and paper-and-pencil tests (PPT) be considered equivalent measures of student knowledge? States and school districts are grappling with this question, and although studies addressing this question are growing, additional research is needed. We report on the performance of students who took either a PPT or one of two different CBT containing multiple-choice items assessing science ideas. Propensity score matching was used to create equivalent demographic groups for each testing modality, and Rasch modelling was used to describe student performance. Performance was found to vary across testing modalities by grade band, students' primary language, and the specific CBT system used. These results are discussed in terms of the current literature and the differences between the specific PPT and CBT systems.

For the thirty-seventh year, the Research and Theory Division and the Division of Instructional Design of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) sponsored the publication of these Proceedings. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of the educational practice including growth-mindset strategies on the self-efficacy, self-regulation, academic achievement and mind development scores of 8th grade students who are continuing their secondary education in Turkey. In order to examine the effect of the use of growth-mindset strategies on the self-efficacy, self-regulation, academic achievement and mindset scores of the 8th grade students, the results obtained as a result of the four-week pilot application carried out with the participation of 42 eighth grade students (experimental group: 21, control group: 21). In this study, which was designed in accordance with the nested mixed pattern, data were obtained through Mindset Scale, Self-Efficacy Scale, and Metacognitive Skills Scale before and after the application. In the qualitative aspect of the research, the data obtained from the interviews with the students, reflection reports filled by the students, self-evaluation forms, peer assessment forms and course observations were subjected to content analysis. The categories and codes that emerged as a result of the analysis were structured under three themes that also constituted the interview questions. Within the scope of the research, semi-structured one-to-one interviews were conducted with 4 students in the experimental group, and after the application, self-assessment, peer assessment forms and reflection reports were filled by the students. Before the application, no significant difference was observed between the experimental and control groups in terms of the average scores showing academic success in mathematics, metacognitive skills and self-efficacy skills. A significant difference was observed only between the average scores of mind development among the posttest scores performed after the mind development training. A positive change was observed between the mindset scores of the experimental group students before and after the application. Recent research seeks to develop more comprehensive learner models for adaptive learning software. For example, models of reading comprehension built using data from students' use of adaptive instructional software for mathematics have recently been developed. These models aim to deliver experiences that consider factors related to learning beyond performance in the target domain for instruction. We investigate the extent to which generalization is possible for a recently developed predictive model that seeks to infer students' reading comprehension ability (as measured by end-of-year standardized test scores) using an introductory learning experience in Carnegie Learning's MATHia intelligent tutoring system for mathematics. Building on a model learned on data from middle school students in a single school district in a mid-western U.S. state, using that state's end-of-year English Language Arts (ELA) standardized test score as an outcome, we consider data from a school district in a south-eastern U.S. state as well as that state's end-of-year ELA standardized test outcome. Generalization is explored by considering prediction performance when training and testing models on data from each of the individual school districts (and for their respective state's test outcomes) as well as pooling data from both districts together. We conclude with discussion of investigations of some algorithmic fairness characteristics of the learned models. The results suggest that a model trained on data from the smaller of the two school districts considered may achieve greater fairness in its predictions over models trained on data from the other district or both districts, despite broad, overall similarities in some demographic characteristics of the two school districts. This raises interesting questions for future research on generalizing these kinds of models as well as on ensuring algorithmic fairness of resulting models for use in real-world adaptive systems for learning. Within the last decade, different educational data mining techniques, particularly quantitative methods such as clustering, and regression analysis are widely used to analyze the data from educational games. In this research, we implemented a quantitative data mining technique (clustering) to further investigate students' feedback. Students played educational games within a week on the educational games platform, Legends of Learning and after a week, we asked them to fulfill the feedback survey about their feelings on the use of this platform. To analyze the collected data from students, firstly, we prepared clusters and selected one prototype student closest to the centroid of each cluster to interview. Interviews were held to explain the clusters more and due to time and resource limitations, we were unable to interview all (N=60) students, thus only the most representative students were interviewed. In addition to the students, we conducted an interview with the teacher as well to get her detailed feedback and observations on the usage of educational games. We also asked students to take an exam before and after the research to see the impact of games on their grades. Our results depict that though educational games can increase students' motivation, they may negatively impact some students' grades. And even though playing games made students feel interested and fun, they would not like to play them on a daily basis. Hence, using educational games for a certain duration such as subject revision weeks may positively influence students' grades and motivation. [For the complete proceedings, see ED630829.]

The aim of this research is to determine the effectiveness of the STEM Kid Module on the scientific literacy of fifth-grade students in the 'Energy' topic. The module was developed based on the combination of constructivism and constructionism as a fundamental learning theory. Meanwhile, the STEM Kid instructional phase was formed using a STEM integrated approach that included engineering design processes and inquiry-based science learning. A quasi-experimental design was used to assess the effectiveness of the STEM Kid Module. This study included 116 children, 61 of whom were high achievers and 55 of whom were moderate achievers. Two elementary schools using the STEM Kid Module were selected as the treatment group, while another school using conventional teaching approach as the control group. Data for this study were gathered by a scientific literacy test that included (i) scientific knowledge, (ii) science process skills, and (iii) daily science application. Results from repeated measurements MANOVA analysis revealed a significant difference in scientific knowledge and daily science application between groups. The study's implication was that the use of the STEM Kid Module through a STEM integrated approach can be implemented in elementary school science teaching and learning for children of varying levels of achievement. The number of students leaving traditional face-to-face public schools and moving to online school environments continues to grow. The National Center for Educational Statistics reported that almost 300,000 K12 students were served in a fully online environment for the 2019-2020 school year (US Department of Education, n.d.). This study investigates the impact of online and traditional learning on student achievement, specifically focusing on students with disabilities. The study used descriptive statistics to analyze state standardized testing data retrieved from the Texas Academic Performance Reports (TAPR) from three school districts in Texas to compare online schools and traditional face-to-face institutions from the 2020-2021 school year. The findings reveal that online schools outperformed their traditional counterparts. This research highlights the growing significance of online programming in K-12 education. Artificial intelligence (AI) education is still in the exploratory stage for K-12 schools. There is a serious lack of studies that informed schools teachers about AI curriculum design. Accordingly, this paper presented an AI curriculum and examined whether the curriculum improves students' perceived AI knowledge, attitudes, and motivation towards AI, as well as caters to students with different genders and academic achievement. It involved 64 grade 8-9 students. Results show that in the AI curriculum, 1) the students' self-report indicated that they became more competent, developed more positive attitude and higher intrinsic motivation to learn AI, 2) there were insignificant differences between girl and boys, and 3) there were almost no significant differences between high and low achieving students.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how a bilingual education program effects the minority groups' academic achievement. An explanatory sequential mixed method was used for this study. Triangulation was used in both the quantitative and qualitative parts of the study to minimize prejudice and enhance honesty regarding the social phenomenon studied. Both the quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed to examine the parameters to reveal academic achievements within a bilingual education context. For quantitative data collection, 280 participants responded the survey questions. For qualitative data collection, 12 participants were interviewed. Results reflected that bilingual education would help build stronger relationships between different ethnic groups and have a positive effect on all the academic achievement of minority students.

While many researchers have addressed the topic of academic resilience, studies on the individual protective factors in high-risk middle school students from urban settings are limited. In this qualitative interpretive study, we interviewed and obtained academic records from 20 eligible students in grades 7-8 to delve into the perceptions and experiences of factors contributing to their success despite adversity. Document analyses of attendance and course grades from the last two years were triangulated with interviews. These students articulated four themes that helped: positive self-esteem, self-determination, perseverance, and optimism. Based upon these results, implications (e.g., helping educational leaders understand the factors) and future avenues of research (e.g., conducted studies comparing those with and without these identified individual factors) are offered.

While the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted educational learning, the impacts of the pandemic may vary based on student demographics. The main purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in student performance due to COVID-19 across several demographic variables. Multilevel mixed effects models compared the effects of COVID-19 in a large-scale math and English Language Arts (ELA) assessment for sixth grade students. By creating a cohort variable pertaining to the 2019 (pre-pandemic) or 2021 (post-pandemic) assessment, a single model was built with all 2019 and 2021 data combined. Interaction terms between the cohort variable and covariates allowed for comparison of covariates between cohorts. Coefficients from the 2021 covariates were compared to the 2019 covariates to understand and identify how changes in academic instruction due to COVID-19 may have impacted student learning. Results showed that assessment scores in 2021 were significantly lower than 2019 with math scores showing the largest decrease. The greatest decrease in scaled score between the 2019 and 2021 test administrations is seen in students who identify as female, Black, economically disadvantaged, and English language learner. ELA results showed that rural schools scored higher than city schools in 2021, and math results showed that suburban, town, and rural schools all scored higher than city schools in 2021. There was no significant difference in scaled score between public and private schools in either 2019 or 2021.

Pandemic-related policies are typically developed by districts and translated to all schools for implementation. Understanding the degree to which the pandemic impacted school-level performance would provide additional perspective for researchers looking to help district and school officials move forward. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the pandemic impact at the school level using three different regression approaches. Large scale assessment datasets in ELA and Mathematics grades 5-8 were used in this study. The reference group data included test-takers from the Spring 2017 and 2019 administrations, which were not impacted by the pandemic. The study group data was test-takers from the Spring 2019 and 2021 administrations. Residual values were estimated by subtracting predicted 2021 scores with the regression coefficients of 2017 to 2019 from observed 2021 scale scores, with the residuals being considered as the pandemic impact. A school residual was calculated by averaging the residuals of the students in the schools. There were three study questions. The first question was about the stability of school effects on students' performances across 2019 and 2021. For both 2019 and 2021, there were some school effects on students' performance. For ELA, ICC values for spring 2021 were lower than those for spring 2019. The second question was regarding which regression method produced the best-fit model. As expected, the regression model with the nested school design produced the best fit. The third question was how to flag schools impacted by the pandemic. In this study, the two flagging criteria utilized were the SD and effect size flags. Because the SD flag compares school residuals to state residuals, it can be considered a relative criterion. These effect size flags compared expected performance under a normal environment and the 2021 observed performance of a school and thus can be regarded as an absolute criterion.

The purpose of the current research study was to investigate the extent to which student performance was influenced by the disruption to learning that occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To explain observed differences in performance, we compared outcomes from a state-wide summative testing program between students who were administered the test in 2019 and 2021. Because the background and demographic characteristics of the two testing populations differed on several variables, including race/ethnicity, locale, and subgroup membership, propensity score matching was used to develop comparable groups for analyses. Independent samples t-tests were then conducted to assess whether there were significant differences in mean scaled scores and domain subscores between the two matched groups. In addition, the same procedures were used to develop and analyze differences for specific student subgroups (students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students, and English language learners). Overall, results indicated that the 2021 test-takers earned lower scores than students who tested in 2019 for all subjects and grade levels, except English Language Arts (ELA) grade 8. Moreover, larger score differences were observed for mathematics than ELA. Lastly, results from subgroup analyses indicated that in mathematics all subgroups earned significantly lower scores in 2021 than 2019, whereas in ELA grades 5 through 7, English Language Learners and economically disadvantaged subgroups earned lower scores in 2021 than 2019. The results of this study suggest that after controlling for differences between the 2021 and 2019 populations, student performance was likely influenced by the disruption to learning due to pandemic-related factors.

Our main goal in our study was to enable students to take an active role in teaching social studies. With the work done in the process, it was tried to raise awareness about museums and to explain how valuable museums are for a new perspective on education and most importantly for the social studies course. In our study, a 2X2 split-plot mixed design was used. In the quantitative part of the study, dependent and independent variable measurements were made on the experimental and control groups. In the qualitative part, semistructured interview technique was applied. The participants of the research were carried out with 50 people in a public school in the center of Gaziantep in the 2020-2021 academic year. The quantitative data of the research were analyzed with the SPSS 22.00 program. Qualitative data were evaluated by descriptive analysis method. In our study, which was prepared on the basis of the achievement "discuss the contributions of the scholars who grew up in the Turkish-Islamic civilization to the scientific development process"; One week before the application, pre-tests were made to the experimental and control groups, and then the teaching activity was applied in the classroom by adhering to the curriculum. In addition, a museum tour activity was carried out with the experimental group. Afterwards, the post-test was applied to both groups. In the last stage of the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 8 students. As a result of the research, it was determined that museum education, which is one of the out-of-school learning environments for the social studies course, improved the course success level of the students in the experimental group. The International Conference seeks to provide some answers and explore the several areas within the Psychology field, new developments in studies and proposals for future scientific projects. The goal is to offer a worldwide connection between psychologists, researchers and lecturers, from a wide range of academic fields, interested in exploring and giving their contribution in psychological issues. We take pride in having been able to connect and bring together academics, scholars, practitioners and others interested in a field that is fertile in new perspectives, ideas and knowledge. We counted on an extensive variety of contributors and presenters, which can supplement the view of the human essence and behavior, showing the impact of their different personal, academic and cultural experiences. This is, certainly, one of the reasons there are several nationalities and cultures represented, inspiring multi-disciplinary collaborative links, fomenting intellectual encounters and development. InPACT 2023 received 548 submissions, from more than 39 different countries all over the world, reviewed by a double-blind process. Submissions were prepared to take the form of Oral Presentations, Posters, Virtual Presentations and Workshops. 192 submissions (overall, 35% acceptance rate) were accepted for presentation at the conference.

This paper will include details on knowledge and ambition levels found between Latino-ethnic K-5 students located in a Southern Region of Texas from a college going culture presentation. The purpose is to understand how ambition and knowledge about higher education was influenced among Latino-ethnic K-5 students in impoverished areas. A low-income public school located in South Texas was included in this study. An open-ended questionnaire was provided to 26 teachers. 511 students were targeted for a presentation with information about college, universities, degrees, careers, and income facts. Teachers documented ambition levels before and after students received a college-going presentation. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to analyze the responses for 10 pre and post surveys. Findings indicate ambition and knowledge was increased with a higher education presentation among Latino-ethnic K-5 students in highly impoverished areas. Recommendations were made to continue to research the Latino-ethnic impoverished population and variables that influence higher education success rates. In this statement to the Rhode Island State Legislature, Ian Rowe presents a case for education equality. He acknowledges that America is not perfect, but there is a need to confront the inequities faced united rather than divided. In preparing for this testimony, he pulled 8th grade NAEP reading proficiency scores for Rhode Island students since 1998. As is the case with most other states, in each year since the Nation's Report Card was administered in Rhode Island in 1998, less than half of Rhode Island's white students in the 8th grades scored NAEP proficient in reading. The sad irony is that closing the black or hispanic to white achievement gap, without improving outcomes for all students, would mean black and hispanic student outcomes would grow from sub-mediocrity to full-mediocrity in terms of reading. It is important that kids know they live in a good, if not great country, one that is not hostile to their dreams.

This volume includes three sections of the 2021 NORDSCI international conference proceedings: (1) Education and Educational Research; (2) Language and Linguistics; and (3) Sociology and Healthcare. Education and Educational Research includes 15 papers covering the full spectrum of education, including history, sociology and economy of education, educational policy, strategy and technologies. This study examines the COVID-19 shift to online instruction and its impact on a charter school system (CSS) 3rd-10th grade students' academic achievement through the lens of noncognitive factors. We recruited 693 students and utilized qualitative and quantitative analyses. We found that students' NWEA math and ELA scores continued to increase although almost ninety percent of them completed 2020-2021 school year online. Second, students' self-efficacy, academic engagement, and growth mindset scores significantly explained some of the variance in students' NWEA math and ELA scores. Lastly, students indicated that they liked the comfort, family presence, safety, and personalization of the online learning most. They disliked the lack of social component of learning, technical, and focus and engagement problems most.

Through a theoretical framework emphasizing the importance of fidelity of implementation (FOI), this paper explores how 3rd and 4th grade teachers implemented an early algebra intervention, and the extent to which the FOI related to student learning. The data for this report are taken from the first two years of an experimental research project. Videotaped classroom observations, our primary measure of FOI, were coded by adding to and adapting the Mathematical Quality of Instruction (MQI) instrument, and student performance was measured by overall score (correctness) on an algebra assessment. Results revealed a significant positive relationship between teachers' implementation and their students' performance. In the context of a large-scale randomized controlled trial, our team investigated "front line" teaching issues as schools implemented a fully digital, blended learning curriculum in mathematics. This paper focuses on observations of instruction within schools that were assigned to use the new digital resources. Compared to a business-as-usual control group, classroom activity and teaching practices changed in the treatment group. Observers, who were blind to student achievement outcomes, found two overall patterns in treatment classrooms across five categories of observations. Later quantitative analysis indeed found the "high" and "low" patterns could account for some of the variance in achievement outcomes within the treatment condition. We explore observed patterns in terms of existing learning science theory and suggest areas where further development of the learning sciences may be needed and how learning sciences can contribute to improvement of digital, blended learning environments.

In this research, school and district gifted coordinators in three states reported on the gifted curriculum in their schools. We also use state administrative data to examine the achievement growth from 3rd to 5th grade for gifted and non-gifted students. We find a limited use of a gifted mathematics and language arts curriculum for gifted students. School gifted coordinators report that school gifted programs focus more on critical thinking skills and creative thinking skills than on accelerated instruction in mathematics and language arts, based on a ranking of 26 different potential curriculum foci. We find that gifted students start 3rd grade with academic achievement that is about two grade levels above the academic level of non-gifted students. However, gifted students have slower academic growth between 3rd grade and 5th grade than non-gifted students. We attribute this to limited opportunities for advanced content.

The 12th iteration of the International Conference on Educational Data Mining (EDM 2019) is organized under the auspices of the International Educational Data Mining Society in Montreal, Canada. The theme of this year's conference is EDM in Open-Ended Domains. As EDM has matured it has increasingly been applied to open-ended and ill-defined tasks such as writing, design, and collaborative problem solving, and it has been used in new informal contexts where student actions are at best semi-structured. This iteration of the conference includes a range of work in these and other areas. This year's conference features three invited talks: Julita Vassileva, Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Saskatchewan, Canada; Steve Ritter, Co-Founder and Chief Scientist, Carnegie Learning Inc., Pittsburgh; and Michael Mozer, Professor Department of Computer Science and Institute of Cognitive Science University of Colorado. The number of accepted papers include 22 full papers and 42 short papers. An additional 47 papers were accepted to the poster track. The poster and demo track itself accepted 14 contributions out of 34 submissions. Together with the "Journal of Educational Data Mining" ("JEDM"), the EDM 2019 conference held a "JEDM" Track that provides researchers a venue to deliver more substantial mature work than is possible in a conference proceeding and to present their work to a live audience. The papers submitted to this track followed the "JEDM" peer review process. Two such papers are featured in the conference's program. Additionally this year, papers that were regularly published in the journal in 2018 were invited for presentation at the conference. Two authors accepted this invitation. The main conference invited contributions to an Industry Track in addition to the main track. The EDM 2019 Industry Track received eleven submissions of which six were accepted. The EDM conference continues its tradition of providing opportunities for young researchers to present their work and receive feedback from their peers and senior researchers. The doctoral consortium this year features eight such presentations. This year's conference includes also an invited talk by the authors of the 2018 winner of the EDM Test of Time Award. This year's talk is delivered by Mykola Pechenizkiy. In addition to the main program, there are three workshops: (1) Learning Analytics: Building bridges between the Education and the Computing communities; (2) Reinforcement Learning for Educational Data Mining; and (3) Workshop on EDM & Games: Leveling Up Engaged Learning with Data-Rich Analytics. Three tutorials were presented as well: (1) Sharing and Reusing Data and Analytic Methods with LearnSphere; (2) Causal Discovery with Tetrad in LearnSphere's Tigris and Designing and Developing Open; and (3) Pedagogically-Based Predictive Models using the Moodle Analytics API.

These proceedings contain the papers and posters of the International Conference on e-Learning (EL) 2019, which was organised by the International Association for Development of the Information Society and co-organised by the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, in Porto, Portugal, July 17-19, 2019. The EL 2019 conference aims to address the main issues of concern within e-Learning. This conference covers both technical as well as the non-technical aspects of e-Learning. The aim of this study is to examine, in an educational context, the influence of chess training on academic performance (written text comprehension and recall and mathematical problem-solving ability) and on meta-cognitive skills (approach to studying and study strategies availability). A sample of 85 children attending primary school participated in the study: 48 children in the experimental group and 37 in the control group. The experimental group took part to a chess training (a 30-hour chess program) during school hours; the control group carried out a sport program. The results show that after the chess training, the two groups did not differ in their approach to studying, in their use of more or less functional study strategies, and in their written text recall and comprehension ability; instead, a significant difference emerged between the two groups in mathematical problem solving: The experimental group children showed a greater ability to represent a math problem and to categorize it than the control children. The results will be discussed in light of the debate about the transfer of specific domain skills to general domain skills. [For the complete proceedings, see ED608557.]

The CELDA conference aims to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There have been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agent systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aims to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments. Main tracks have been identified. However, innovative contributions that do not easily fit into these areas will also be considered as long as they are directly related to the overall theme of the conference -- cognition and exploratory learning in the digital age. The CELDA 2019 Conference received 87 submissions from more than 25 countries. Out of the papers submitted, 48 were accepted as full papers for an acceptance rate of 55%; 15 were accepted as short papers and one was accepted as a reflection paper. In addition to the presentation of full, short and reflection papers, the conference also includes one keynote presentation from an internationally distinguished researcher, Baltasar Fernández Manjón, Director of the e-Learning Research Group e-UCM, Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), Spain. This work investigates in how far gamification and micro-learning, implemented by the novel technologies H5P and xAPI, are suitable to increase the motivation and learning performance of pupils with cognitive and behavioral challenges. The context for the field trials is the Norwegian SOL framework (short for Systematic Observation of Reading) in 6th and 7th grade. The results show that, albeit there are technical deficiencies, the technology is well suited for crafting engaging learning experiences. The prototype developed in the course of the project is capable of assessing task fidelity and pupil performance. With the proper statistical analysis, it can be a valuable ingredient for useful teacher assets such as monitoring tools. [For the complete proceedings, see ED600498.]

For at least the last century researchers have advocated the use of student confidence as a form of educational assessment and the growth of online and mobile educational software has made the implementation of this measurement far easier. The following short paper discusses our first study of the dynamics of student confidence in an online math tutor. We used a randomized controlled trial to test whether asking students about their confidence while using an Intelligent Tutor altered their performance. We observe that (1) Asking students about their confidence has no statistically significant impact on any of several performance measures (2) Student confidence is more easily reduced by negative feedback (being incorrect) than increased by positive feedback (being correct) and (3) confidence accuracy may be a useful predictor of student behavior. This paper demonstrates how psychological ideas can be imported into Educational Data Mining and our findings point to the possibility of using student confidence to better predict performance and differentiate between students based on the way they approach items. The aim of this paper is to provide an objective overview of the impact of teacher salaries on the educational achievements of students. It is often debated about teacher salaries and improvement or jeopardizing their standard, but educational consequences that may ensue as a result of these intentions are rarely addressed. Teacher's role in student's achievement outcomes is unquestionable. There are many factors that have an impact on student achievement, but this paper will analyze only the impact of teacher's income on student's achievement. A hypothesis for further study has been set by collecting and analyzing pedagogical documentation on teacher salaries and student's educational achievements. Qualitative approach to statistical results of PISA study published in 2013 analyzes following categories: reading, mathematics and science, student's sense of belonging to school and student's personal opinion on does school prepare them for adult life. The study of these elements in selected countries gives us a concrete insight into their interrelationship. The comparative analysis compared the educational achievements of students with the level of teacher's salaries in the following countries: Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, Norway, South Korea, Spain and Switzerland. The results of the research show that the level of teacher's income has an impact on student's achievements. The paper confirms the facts that the teaching profession is more popular as incomes increase and therefore attracts more motivated and skilled individuals. Although an understanding of time is crucial in our society, curriculum documents have an undue emphasis on reading time and little emphasis on core underlying ideas. Given this context, a one-to-one assessment interview, based on a new framework, was developed and administered to investigate students' understanding of core ideas undergirding the notion of time: succession, duration and measurement. This paper reports on the development and implementation of the interview and initial results for Year 3/4 students.

Educators in gifted education struggle to identify effective strategies for identifying gifted students from under-served populations who would benefit from gifted education services. Using data from a longitudinal study and drawing from an initial student sample in 12 low-income rural districts, we examined an alternative identification process for gifted services. Data analysis validated the process in yielding a new pool of students and confirmed that rural gifts may manifest in ways "missed" by traditional identification processes. Results also demonstrate that while students varied on pretests (alternatively identified students scored lower), there were no differences in the post-tests among the two groups, invalidating claims that alternative assessment leads to the inclusion of students less capable of high levels of achievement.

Relative age effects occur when older and younger students are peers in the same classroom. Previous research in this field has shown that older children have higher academic achievement compared to the youngest children in the same grade. This study examined the effects of separating kindergarten students into classes based solely on age. The groups of students were compared to each other and to a control group of students who were not in classes dependent on age. The results show that while older students still score higher than younger students by the end of the year, the students in the youngest classroom made larger gains in achievement during the year in math and reading.

This study reports findings of ten urban California educational leaders' views about their perceived emotional, psychological, and cognitive skillsets to mitigate the Dunning-Kruger Effect and maximize equity in student learning in ten of the state's highest performing, low socioeconomic status schools. Psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger (1999) investigated cognitive biases of university students as they were first tested then subsequently asked to report their estimates of how well they scored. Those most competent reported a reasonable confidence level whereas those least competent expressed the highest confidence. This study seeks to report California school leaders' perceptions regarding their skillsets to mitigate the Dunning-Kruger Effect and maximize equity in student learning within ten of the state's highest performing, low SES schools.

Teacher expectations have been researched for five decades. However, the question of whether or not expectations are stable or not over time has been infrequently investigated. Further, studies of stability have generally not controlled for achievement and expectations may be stable because achievement is stable. The current study investigated the rank order of expectations (between students) controlling for achievement at the beginning, middle and end of one academic year. The study also examined whether expectations changed for individual students (within student). Overall, the results showed strong stability in the rank ordering of students across the year. Further, although teachers adjusted their expectations for some students over the year, for others expectations remained high or low throughout the year.

Learning mathematics is a complex and dynamic process. In this paper, the authors adopt a semiotic framework (Yeh & Nason, 2004) and highlight programming as one of the main aspects of the semiosis or meaning-making for the learning of mathematics. During a 10- week teaching experiment, mathematical meaning-making was enriched when primary students wrote Logo programs to create 3D virtual worlds. The analysis of results found deep learning in mathematics, as well as in technology and engineering areas. This prompted a rethinking about the nature of learning mathematics and a need to employ and examine a more holistic learning approach for the learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) areas.

This book contains a compilation of papers presented at the International Conference on Education and New Developments (END 2017), organized by the World Institute for Advanced Research and Science (W.I.A.R.S.). Education, in our contemporary world, is a right since we are born. Every experience has a formative effect on the constitution of the human being, in the way one thinks, feels and acts. One of the most important contributions resides in what and how we learn through the improvement of educational processes, both in formal and informal settings. The International Conference seeks to provide some answers and explore the processes, actions, challenges and outcomes of learning, teaching and human development. END 2017 received 581 submissions, from 55 different countries, reviewed by a double-blind process. We are delighted to welcome you to the International Psychological Applications Conference and Trends (InPACT) 2017, taking place in Budapest, Hungary, from 29 of April to 1 of May, 2017. Modern psychology offers a large range of scientific fields where it can be applied. The goal of understanding individuals and groups (mental functions and behavioral standpoints), from this academic and practical scientific discipline, aims ultimately to benefit society. This International Conference seeks to provide some answers and explore the several areas within the Psychology field, new developments in studies and proposals for future scientific projects. The goal is to offer a worldwide connection between psychologists, researchers and lecturers, from a wide range of academic fields, interested in exploring and giving their contribution in psychological issues. The conference is a forum that connects and brings together academics, scholars, practitioners and others interested in a field that is fertile in new perspectives, ideas and knowledge. There is an extensive variety of contributors and presenters, which can supplement the view of the human essence and behavior, showing the impact of their different personal, academic and cultural experiences. This is, certainly, one of the reasons there are nationalities and cultures represented, inspiring multi-disciplinary collaborative links, fomenting intellectual encounter and development. InPACT 2017 received 243 submissions, from 35 different countries from all over the world, reviewed by a double-blind process. Submissions were prepared to take form of Oral Presentations, Posters, Virtual Presentations and Workshops. It was accepted for presentation in the conference 128 submissions (29% acceptance rate). The conference also includes: (1) Two keynote presentations by Prof. Dr. Leslie G. Walker (Professor of Cancer Rehabilitation at the University of Hull, United Kingdom) and by Prof. Dr. Howard S. Schwartz (Professor of Organizational Behavior in the School of Business Administration, Oakland University, USA); and (2) Two Special Talks one by Prof. Dr. Michael Wang (Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Leicester, United Kingdom), and the other by Dr. António Alvim (Portuguese Association of Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Portugal). This paper reports on elementary teachers' positioning of students as learners of mathematics related to their perceived ability level or previous achievement in mathematics. This work, which is a part of a larger design experiment on teacher learning of mathematics learning trajectories, examines the ways in which LTs influenced teachers' positioning of students and the changes we observed in teachers' discourse as teachers engaged in various professional learning tasks throughout the professional development. While such connection between an instructional leader and a vigorous teacher-leader team seems natural in the school with instructional effectiveness, the research evidence is surprisingly limited. To fill the gap, these factors are linked such that principals' effort on instruction will lead them to change the school's leadership structure by involving teacher leaders for collective instructional improvement, which will help improve teacher's instructional efficacy and ultimately boost student learning. Using data collected by a Chinese policy center, this study found that instructional leadership and teacher leadership are positively related to teacher efficacy and student performance, while the effect size between both leadership styles and teacher efficacy is more significant than that between school leadership and student test score.

This paper describes Singapore and Australian Grade 6 students' (n=1,187) performance on a symmetry task in a recently developed Mathematics Processing Instrument (MPI). The MPI comprised tasks sourced from Australia and Singapore's national assessments, NAPLAN and PSLE. Only half of the cohort solved the item successfully. It is possible that persistence of prototypical images of a vertical line of symmetry and reinforcements in the classrooms could have attributed to this low success rate.
