• This paper examines whether home overcrowding has a significant effect on children's academic performance. This topic has not been explored in detail in Latin America. • The study uses data from the international SERCE (2006) test conducted in fifteen Latin America countries for a sample of students of sixth grade. • The results show that overcrowding has a negative effect that even exceeds the impact of certain maternal education level on a child's academic performance. After examining the robustness of the model with several techniques, the coefficients remains negative and statistically significant. • The evidence suggests that overcrowding is an important variable that should be considered when creating public policies aimed at improving student performance. This study seeks to determine whether overcrowding has a significant effect on students' academic performance, controlling for variables associated with poverty and low socioeconomic status. It uses data from the international SERCE test conducted in fifteen Latin American countries. Based on multiple specifications and robustness tests, the evidence suggests that overcrowding is a negative and statistically significant factor that even exceeds the impact of certain maternal education levels on a child's academic performance.
