Renewable energy resources (wind, solar) are unpredictable, so it is wise to store the electricity they generate in an energy carrier X. Various PtX (power to useful energy-intensive raw material such as hydrogen, synthetic natural gas, fuel) applications have been proposed. At the heart of our work is widely used idea to convert residual CO2 from biogas plant into higher hydrocarbons using electricity from renewables (e.g., sun, wind, hydro). The specific goal is to produce ethylene-highly demanded hydrocarbon in plastics industry. The process itself is realised on electrocatalytic carbon/copper cathode which must be selective to reaction: 2CO2 + 12e− + 12H+→C2H4 + 4H2O. We propose a bottom-up approach to build catalyst from the smallest particles-graphene sheet stacks (GSS) coated with metallic copper nanocrystals. Composite GSS-Cu structure functions as a CO2 and proton absorber, facilitating hydrogenation and carbon–carbon coupling reactions on Cu-nanocluster/GSS for the formation of C2H4. In our design electrocatalytic electrode is made from nitrogen-doped graphene sheet stacks coated with copper nanostructures. The N-GSSitself can be drop-casted or electrophoretically incorporated onto the carbon paper and gas diffusion electrode. Electrochemical deposition method was recognized as successful and most promising to grow Cu nanocrystals on N-GSS incorporated in conducting carbon substrate. Gaseous products from CO2 electro-catalytic reformation on the cathode were investigated by mass-spectrometer but the electrode surface was analysed by SEM/EDS and XRD methods. Heterogeneous catalysts play a dual role in transesterification due to their advantages of being separable and reusable. In recent years, heterogeneous catalysts derived from renewable resources have received more attention. In this paper, the production of biodiesel from Xanthoceras sorbifolia bunge oil via transesterification was studied under the action of an ILe@Cu@MOF catalyst. Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Thermogravimetric (TG) and other characterization methods were used to characterize the microstructure and thermal stability of the catalyst and further study the ILe@Cu@MOF catalyst for the preparation of biodiesel from Xanthoceras sorbifolia bunge oil. The results show that the surface of the ILe@Cu@MOF catalyst is attached with a sheet-like structure of isoleucine (ILe), which mainly contains Cu, O, C and N elements. The specific surface area is 19.687 m2/g, and the average pore size is 31.74 nm, which belongs to mesoporous material. The pyrolysis temperature of ILe@Cu@MOF reached 360 °C, indicating that the grafting of ILe had a protective effect on Cu@MOF and increased the pyrolysis temperature of Cu@MOF. At the same time, the water contact angle increased from 86° to 121°, and the material was hydrophobic. The optimum conditions for the preparation of biodiesel were as follows: the amount of catalyst was 3 wt%, the molar ratio of methanol to oil was 35:1, the reaction temperature was 50 °C, and the reaction time was 4 h. At this time, the biodiesel yield was up to 82.85%. Moreover, after five cycles of ILe@Cu@MOF, the yield still reached 73.4%. GC–MS and MNR studies showed that the quality of biodiesel after catalysis was higher. The prepared catalyst can make biodiesel products more sustainable, environmentally friendly and economical, and can provide future prospects for the energy utilization of renewable resources. As a clean and renewable energy source for sustainable development, hydrogen energy has gained a lot of attention from the general public and researchers. Hydrogen production by electrolysis of water is the most important approach to producing hydrogen, and it is also the main way to realize carbon neutrality. In this paper, the main technologies of hydrogen production by electrolysis of water are discussed in detail; their characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages are analyzed; and the selection criteria and design criteria of catalysts are presented. The catalysts used in various hydrogen production technologies and their characteristics are emphatically expounded, aiming at optimizing the existing catalyst system and developing new high-performance, high-stability, and low-cost catalysts. With the rapid development of industry and the increasing demand for transportation, traditional sources of energy have been excessively consumed. Biodiesel as an alternative energy source has become a research focus. The most common method for biodiesel production is transesterification, in which lipid and low carbon alcohol are commonly used as raw materials, in the presence of a catalyst. In the process of transesterification, the performance of the catalyst is the key factor of the biodiesel yield. This paper reviews the recent research progress on homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts in biodiesel production. The advantages and disadvantages of current homogeneous acid catalysts and homogeneous base catalysts are discussed, and heteropolyacid heterogeneous catalysts and biomass-derived base catalysts are described. The applications of the homogeneous and heterogeneous catalyst derivatives ionic liquids/deep eutectic solvents and nanocatalysts/magnetic catalysts in biodiesel production are reviewed. The mechanism and economic cost of current homogeneous acid catalysts and homogeneous base catalysts are also analyzed. The unique advantages of each type of catalyst are compared to better understand the microscopic details behind biodiesel. Finally, some challenges of current biodiesel catalysts are summarized, and future research directions are presented. This review will provide general and in-depth knowledge on the achievements, directions, and research priorities in developing novel homogeneous/heterogeneous catalysts for the green and cost-effective production of biodiesel. Developing earth-abundant electrocatalysts useful for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) is critical for electrocatalytic water splitting driven by renewable energy. Molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) with the crystal structure of hexagonal symmetry has been identified to be an excellent HER catalyst due to its platinum-like electronic structure while the synthesis of Mo2C is generally time consuming and energy intensive. Herein, we demonstrated the ultrafast synthesis of a Mo2C-based electrocatalyst with Joule heating at 1473 K for only 6 s. Benefitting from several advantages including efficient catalytic kinetics, enhanced charge transport kinetics and high intrinsic activity, the as-prepared catalyst exhibited drastically enhanced HER performance compared with commercial Mo2C. It showed an overpotential of 288 mV for achieving a current density of −50 mA cm−2 and good stability, which highlighted the feasibility of the Joule heating method towards preparing efficient electrocatalysts. As traditional fossil fuel energy development faces significant challenges, two-dimensional layered materials have become increasingly popular in various fields and have generated widespread research interest. MXene is an exceptional catalytic material that is typically integrated into functional composite materials with other substances to enhance its catalytic-reaction performance. Improving the thermal stability, electrical conductivity, and electrochemical activity, as well as enhancing the specific surface structure, can make the material an excellent catalyst for photoelectrocatalysis and energy-regeneration reactions. The article mainly outlines the structural characteristics, preparation methods, and applications of MXene in the field of catalysis. This text highlights the latest progress and performance comparison of MXene-based catalytic functional materials in various fields such as electrochemical conversion, photocatalysis, renewable energy, energy storage, and carbon capture and conversion. Water electrolysis to obtain hydrogen in combination with intermittent renewable energy resources is an emerging sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Among the available electrolyzer technologies, anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) has been paid much attention because of its advantageous behavior compared to other more traditional approaches such as solid oxide electrolyzer cells, and alkaline or proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Recently, very promising results have been obtained in the AEMWE technology. This review paper is focused on recent advances in membrane electrode assembly components, paying particular attention to the preparation methods for catalyst coated on gas diffusion layers, which has not been previously reported in the literature for this type of electrolyzers. The most successful methodologies utilized for the preparation of catalysts, including co-precipitation, electrodeposition, sol–gel, hydrothermal, chemical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, ion beam sputtering, and magnetron sputtering deposition techniques, have been detailed. Besides a description of these procedures, in this review, we also present a critical appraisal of the efficiency of the water electrolysis carried out with cells fitted with electrodes prepared with these procedures. Biomass as a renewable energy resource is a major topic on a global scale. Several types of biomass heat treatment methods have been introduced to obtain useful byproducts via pyrolysis. Microwaves are a practical replacement for conventional stoves and ovens to perform pyrolysis of biomass. Their rapid heating rate and user-friendliness make them a good choice for the pyrolysis process over conventional methods. The current study reviewed research articles that used microwaves for the pyrolysis process on different types of biomass. This study primarily provides comprehensive details about the pyrolysis process, especially microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) and its feasibility for treating biomass. A systematic literature review, according to the PRISMA guidelines, was performed to find research articles on biomass treatment using MAP technology. We analyzed various research studies (n = 32), retrieved from different databases, that used MAP for pyrolysis on various types of biomass, and we achieved good results. The main goal of this study was to examine the usefulness of the MAP technique, comparing its effects on distinguished types of biomass. We found MAP's effective parameters, namely, temperature, concentration of microwave absorber, moisture percentage of starting material and flow rate, microwave power and residence time of the initial sweep gas that control the pyrolysis process, and effect quality of byproducts. The catalytic agent in MAP pyrolysis was found to be useful for treating biomass, and that it has great potential to increase (nearly double) the production yield. Although MAP could not be used for all types of materials due to some challenges, it produced good results compared to conventional heating (pyrolysis) methods. We concluded that MAP is an effective method for reducing pyrolysis reaction time and improving the quality of value-added products. Also, MAP eliminates the shredding requirement for biomass and improves heating quality. The global energy demand is increasing day by day. Fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal and gas are the main source of energy worldwide. However, fossil fuels, which cause acid rain, the greenhouse effect and other such environmental problems, will eventually be depleted, and renewable energy seems to be the most reasonable solution in this regard. Renewable biofuels have significant potential and can meet the world's current energy demand. One of the important biofuels is biodiesel, and in the future it can replace petroleum. Waste cooking oil was used as a raw material in biodiesel production in order to reduce the production cost of the offered additive. In this study, the aim was to optimize the process parameters for biodiesel production within the acceptable limit values in the literature. Therefore, the molar ratio of methanol to waste cooking oil (9:1–15:1), catalyst concentration (1–5% by weight) and reaction time (60–120 min) were studied for two catalyst types, potassium hydroxide and ion exchange resin Amberlyst 15. High demand for energy consumption forced the exploration of renewable energy resources, and in this context, biodiesel has received intensive attention. The process of biodiesel production itself needs to be optimized in order to make it an eco-friendly and high-performance energy resource. Within this scheme, development of low-cost and reusable heterogeneous catalysts has received much attention. Mesoporous silica materials with the characteristics of having a high surface area and being modifiable, tunable, and chemical/thermally stable have emerged as potential solid support of powerful catalysts in biodiesel production. This review highlights the latest updates on mesoporous silica modifications including acidic, basic, enzyme, and bifunctional catalysts derived from varied functionalization. In the last century, conventional strategies pursued to reduce or convert CO2 have shown limitations and, consequently, have been pushing the development of innovative routes. Among them, great efforts have been made in the field of heterogeneous electrochemical CO2 conversion, which boasts the use of mild operative conditions, compatibility with renewable energy sources, and high versatility from an industrial point of view. Indeed, since the pioneering studies of Hori and co-workers, a wide range of electrocatalysts have been designed. Starting from the performances achieved using traditional bulk metal electrodes, advanced nanostructured and multi-phase materials are currently being studied with the main goal of overcoming the high overpotentials usually required for the obtainment of reduction products in substantial amounts. This review reports the most relevant examples of metal-based, nanostructured electrocatalysts proposed in the literature during the last 40 years. Moreover, the benchmark materials are identified and the most promising strategies towards the selective conversion to high-added-value chemicals with superior productivities are highlighted. Photo-catalytically converting the greenhouse gas CO2 into ethanol is an important avenue for the mitigation of climate issues and the utilization of renewable energies. Catalysts play critical roles in the reaction of photocatalytic CO2 conversion to ethanol, and a number of catalysts have been investigated, including semiconductors and plasmonic metal-based catalysts, as well as several other catalysts. In this review, the progress in the development of each category of catalysts is summarized, the current status is reviewed, the remaining challenges are pointed out, and the future research directions are prospected, with the aim being to pave pathways for the rational design of better catalysts. Worldwide, hydrogen is gaining ground since it is a promising alternative energy source to conventional fuels, which include fossil fuel. Thus, numerous techniques to generate hydrogen have been suggested. This literature review describes the challenges and obstacles identified through a series of the publications that target the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride. This review present several catalysts and reactor systems for the generation of hydrogen gas using the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride, selecting articles in the literature that show a promising future for this technology, although some challenges lie ahead. Sodium borohydride has been widely considered as a low-cost hydrogen storage material with high gravimetric hydrogen capacity of about 10 wt.%. However, its thermodynamic stability seriously hinders the application of sodium borohydride to obtain hydrogen. The performances of the reviewed systems of sodium borohydride hydrolysis include analysis from both the thermodynamic and kinetic points of view. The feasibility of an efficient hydrogen generation system, where a mixture of sodium borohydride and catalysts is hydrolyzed, is considered. This review aims to provide a useful resource to aid researchers starting work on the generation of hydrogen gas using the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride, so they can select the catalysts and reactor systems that best suit them. Hydrogen is nowadays considered a favorable and attractive energy carrier fuel to replace other fuels that cause global warming problems. Water electrolysis has attracted the attention of researchers to produce green hydrogen mainly for the accumulation of renewable energy. Hydrogen can be safely used as a bridge to successfully connect the energy demand and supply divisions. An alkaline water electrolysis system owing to its low cost can efficiently use renewable energy sources on large scale. Normally organic/inorganic composite porous separator membranes have been employed as a membrane for alkaline water electrolyzers. However, the separator membranes exhibit high ionic resistance and low gas resistance values, resulting in lower efficiency and raised safety issues as well. Here, in this study, we report that zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA)–based separator membrane exhibits less ohmic resistance 0.15 Ω·cm2 and low hydrogen gas permeability 10.7 × 10−12 mol cm−1 s−1 bar−1 in 30 wt.% KOH solution, which outperforms the commercial, state-of-the-art Zirfon® PERL separator. The cell containing ZTA and advanced catalysts exhibit an excellent performance of 2.1 V at 2000 mA/cm2 at 30 wt.% KOH and 80 °C, which is comparable with PEM electrolysis. These improved results show that AWEs equipped with ZTA separators could be superior in performance to PEM electrolysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a sustainable and clean energy source, hydrogen can be generated by electrolytic water splitting (i.e., a hydrogen evolution reaction, HER). Compared with conventional noble metal catalysts (e.g., Pt), Mo based materials have been deemed as a promising alternative, with a relatively low cost and comparable catalytic performances. In this review, we demonstrate a comprehensive summary of various Mo based materials, such as MoO2, MoS2 and Mo2C. Moreover, state of the art designs of the catalyst structures are presented, to improve the activity and stability for hydrogen evolution, including Mo based carbon composites, heteroatom doping and heterostructure construction. The structure–performance relationships relating to the number of active sites, electron/ion conductivity, H/H2O binding and activation energy, as well as hydrophilicity, are discussed in depth.
