This paper introduces a method for high-resolution lattice image reconstruction and dislocation analysis based on diffraction extinction. The approach primarily involves locating extinction spots in the Fourier transform spectrum (reciprocal space) and constructing corresponding diffraction wave functions. By the coherent combination of diffraction and transmission waves, the lattice image of the extinction planes is reconstructed. This lattice image is then used for dislocation localization, enabling the observation and analysis of crystal planes that exhibit electron diffraction extinction effects and atomic jump arrangements during high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) characterization. Furthermore, due to the method's effectiveness in localizing dislocations, it offers a unique advantage when analyzing high-resolution images with relatively poor quality. The feasibility of this method is theoretically demonstrated in this paper. Additionally, the method was successfully applied to observed edge dislocations, such as 1 / 6 [ 21 1 − ] , 1 / 6 [ 2 − 1 1 − ] , and 1 / 2 [ 0 1 − 1 ] , which are not easily observable in conventional HRTEM characterization processes, in electro-deposited Cu thin films. The Burgers vectors were determined. Moreover, this paper also attempted to observe screw dislocations that are challenging to observe in high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. By shifting a pair of diffraction extinction spots and superimposing the reconstructed images before and after the shift, screw dislocations with a Burgers vector of 1 / 2 [ 01 1 − ] were successfully observed in electro-deposited Cu thin films. In diamond wire saw cutting monocrystalline silicon (mono-Si), the material brittleness removal can cause microcrack damage in the subsurface of the as-sawn silicon wafer, which has a significant impact on the mechanical properties and subsequent processing steps of the wafers. In order to quickly and non-destructively obtain the subsurface microcrack damage depth (SSD) of as-sawn silicon wafers, this paper conducted research on the SSD prediction model for diamond wire saw cutting of mono-Si, and established the relationship between the SSD and the as-sawn surface roughness value (SR) by comprehensively considering the effect of tangential force and the influence of the elastic stress field and residual stress field below the abrasive on the propagation of median cracks. Furthermore, the theoretical relationship model between SR and SSD has been improved by adding a coefficient considering the influence of material ductile regime removal on SR values based on experiments sawing mono-Si along the (111) crystal plane, making the theoretical prediction value of SSD more accurate. The research results indicate that a decrease in wire speed and an increase in feed speed result in an increase in SR and SSD in silicon wafers. There is a non-linear increasing relationship between silicon wafer SSD and SR, with SSD = 21.179 Ra4/3. The larger the SR, the deeper the SSD, and the smaller the relative error of SSD between the theoretical predicted and experimental measurements. This paper deals with the analysis of TRIP steel HCT690 deformation behaviour. The mechanical properties and deformation characteristics of the tested material are determined using selected material tests and tests that consider the required stress states used to define the yield criterion boundary condition and subsequent deformation behaviour in the region of severe plastic deformation. The measured data are subsequently implemented in the numerical simulation of sheet metal forming, where they are used as input data for the computational process in the form of a selected material model defining the yield criterion boundary and, furthermore, the material hardening law during deformation of the material. The chosen numerical simulation process corresponds to the sheet metal forming process, including the subsequent spring-back of the material, when the force does not affect the material. Furthermore, the influence of the chosen computational model and selected process parameters on the deformation and spring-back process of the material is evaluated. High entropy amorphous alloys (HEAAs) are materials that have received much attention in recent years. They exhibit many unique properties; however, research on their composition design method has not been deep enough. In this paper, we summarized some effective composition design strategies for HEAAs. By adjusting the atomic ratio from quinary bulk metallic glasses, Ti20Zr20Cu20Ni20Be20 HEAA with a high fracture strength of 2315 MPa was designed. By similar element addition/substitution, a series of Ti–(Zr, Hf, Nb)–Cu–Ni–Be HEAAs was developed. They possess good glass-forming ability with a maximum critical diameter of 30 mm. Combining elements from those ternary/quaternary bulk metallic glasses has also proved to be an effective method for designing new HEAAs. The effect of high entropy on the property of the alloy, possible composition design methods, and potential applications were also discussed. This paper provides a brief review on modeling of composite structures. Composite structures in this paper refer to any structure featuring anisotropy and heterogeneity, including but not limited to their traditional meaning of composite laminates made of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites. Common methods used in modeling of composite structures, including the axiomatic method, the formal asymptotic method, and the variational asymptotic method, are illustrated in deriving the classical lamination theory for the composite laminated plates. Before a new type of engine is introduced into civil aviation, it must comply with various safety regulations. These regulations include the analysis of secondary damage caused by the re-ingestion of a tooth fragment. The purpose is to prevent crack propagation through the gear rim, which would lead to catastrophic failure. In this context, identification of the initial crack location is crucial to determine the crack propagation path. Therefore, this paper presents a technique to determine and validate a constitutive material model and fracture locus for case-hardened spur gears. As the modelling of the surface-hardened layer is computationally intensive, it is necessary to homogenise the model. This paper comprehensively reviews and discusses the associated effects and errors. To determine the plastic behaviour of the case-hardened external gear (30CrNiMo8) and the nitrided internal gear (35CrAlNi7-10), the widely acknowledged Johnson–Cook material model is implemented using compression and Vickers indenter tests to define the necessary parameters. The fracture locus implementation is also based on the Johnson–Cook method and an axial shift of the fracture locus based on the hardness profile of the spur gears is determined by quasi-static pulsator tests. For validation, a project-specific gearbox test rig is used, enabling consistent ingestion of defined fragments. This paper summarizes the latest research results on materials for the treatment of methane, an important greenhouse gas, and toluene, a volatile organic compound gas, as well as the utilization of these resources over the past two years. These materials include adsorption materials, catalytic oxidation materials, hydrogen-reforming catalytic materials and non-oxidative coupling catalytic materials for methane, and adsorption materials, catalytic oxidation materials, chemical cycle reforming catalytic materials, and degradation catalytic materials for toluene. This paper provides a comprehensive review of these research results from a general point of view and provides an outlook on the treatment of these two gases and materials for resource utilization. Chemical shrinkage (CS) is an intrinsic parameter that may affect the early age cracking of paste, mortar and concrete. It is well known as the driving force of self-desiccation, autogenous shrinkage (AGS) and drying shrinkage. During the first stage of cement hydration (at the initial setting time), the CS and AGS are equal. In the hardened stages, there is a difference in values between the two shrinkage parameters. This paper is a comprehensive review on CS and AGS, measurement techniques, modeling and prediction of different cementitious systems. Based on the various experimental studies, chemical shrinkage depends on the water to binder ratio (w/b) and is proportional to the degree of hydration. A low w/b ratio leads to high CS and AGS. The composition of cement has an effect on both CS and AGS. Also, incorporating supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) affects both shrinkage parameters. It is concluded that adding fly ash (FA) to concrete contributes to CS and AGS reductions. However, this is not the case when concrete contains slag. More than 170 references were consulted including 35 which were published after 2020. According to the authors knowledge, there is no published work on the effect of fibers, especially bio-fibers, on the chemical shrinkage of cement-based composites. Therefore, in addition to traditional chemical shrinkage of cementitious systems, this review includes a section on recent papers conducted by the authors on the effect of bio-fibers on the chemical shrinkage of cement composites. Recently, green materials and technologies have received considerable attention in geotechnical engineering. One of such techniques is microbially-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP). In the MICP process, CaCO3 is achieved bio-chemically within the soil, thus enhancing the strength and stiffness. The purpose of this study is to introduce the wastepaper fiber (WPF) onto the MICP (i) to study the mechanical properties of MICP-treated sand with varying WPF content (0–8%) and (ii) to assess the freeze–thaw (FT) durability of the treated samples. Findings revealed that the ductility of the treated samples increases with the increase in WPF addition, while the highest UCS is found with a small fiber addition. The results of CaCO3 content suggest that the WPF addition enhances the immobilization of the bacteria cells, thus yielding the precipitation content. However, shear wave velocity analysis indicates that a higher addition of WPF results in rapid deterioration of the samples when subjected to freeze–thaw cycles. Microscale analysis illuminates that fiber clusters replace the solid bonding at particle contacts, leading to reduced resistance to freeze–thaw damage. At present, conjugated thermolysis of metal-containing monomers is widely used as single-source precursors to obtain new metal- and metal oxide-containing nanocomposites. In this study, a detailed analysis of the main stages of conjugated thermolysis of silver itaconate was carried out. The obtained nanocomposites containing silver nanoparticles are evenly distributed in a stabilizing carbon matrix. The structural characteristics and properties of the resulting nanomaterials were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). We have developed a method of test analysis of chlorides using paper modified with the obtained silver-containing nanocomposites. The analysis technique is based on the in situ conversion of chlorides to molecular chlorine, its dynamic release, and colorimetric detection using NP-modified paper test strips. A simple installation device is described that allows this combination to be realized. We have fabricated nanocarbon-based palm-sized cubic paper balloons that can be levitated by light irradiation. These paper balloons are composed of carbon nanotube (CNT) freestanding films and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) freestanding films. The number of CNT freestanding films (NCNT) and the number of CNF freestanding films (6-NCNT) among the six walls of the cube were varied. We investigated the effect of NCNT on the levitation behaviors under light irradiation. We found that the balloons were levitated when NCNT was greater than or equal to two. Insufficient dental restoration finishing and polishing may lead to plaque accumulation, gingival inflammation, staining, caries, and esthetic impairment. Here, the effect of two finishing and polishing systems on surface roughness and bacterial adhesion were evaluated. Two finishing and polishing kits were evaluated: diamond burs (Shine 1-2, Strauss & Co, Raanana, Israel) and paper discs (Sof-Lex 3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) (n = 30 each). For each group surface roughness was evaluated using an optical profilometer (Contour GT-K1, Bruker, Billerica, MA, USA) (n = 10). Surface bacteria were evaluated for biofilm biomass using crystal violet (CV) staining (absorbance measured at 538 nm) and viable counts (CFU/mL) (n = 20). The control group included polymerized discs against a Mylar strip (n = 30). Student's t test and one-way ANOVA were used for statistical evaluation. Diamond burs, paper discs, and control average surface RA were 169.4 ± 45.2 µ, 364 ± 77.7 µ, and 121.2 ± 18.1 µ, respectively. There was a significant difference found between all groups (p < 0.00001). Bacterial biomass on diamond burs, paper discs, and control samples were 0.458 ± 0.161, 0.507 ± 0.139, and 0.446 ± 0.142, respectively (p = 0.257). Viable bacterial counts (CFU/mL) on diamond burs, paper discs, and control samples were 2.25 × 104, 2.95 × 104, and 2.75 × 104, respectively (p = 0.856). A comparison between two finishing and polishing kits showed that the shine 1–2 diamond bur kit produced a smoother surface than the polishing disc kit. Hybrid cements combine clinker with large amount of supplementary cementitious materials while utilizing hydration and alkali activation processes. This paper summarizes shrinkage and creep properties of industrially produced H-cement, containing only 20% of Portland clinker. In comparison with a reference cement CEM II/B-S 32.5 R, autogenous shrinkage is smaller after 7 days, and drying shrinkage is similar at similar times. A different capillary system of H-cement leads to faster water mass loss during drying. Basic and total creep of concrete remains in the standard deviation of B4 and EC2 creep models. The results demonstrate that shrinkage and creep properties of concrete made from H-cement have similar behavior as conventional structural concrete or high-volume fly ash concrete. This article addresses manufacturing structures made via injection molding from biodegradable materials. The mentioned structures can be successfully used as energy-absorbing liners of all kinds of sports helmets, replacing the previously used expanded polystyrene. This paper is focused on injection technological tests and tensile tests (in quasi-static and dynamic conditions) of several composites based on a PLA matrix with the addition of other biodegradable softening agents, such as PBAT and TPS (the blends were prepared via melt blending using a screw extruder with mass compositions of 50:50, 30:70, and 15:85). Tensile tests showed a positive strain rate sensitivity of the mixtures and a dependence of the increase in the ratio of the dynamic to static yield stress on the increase in the share of the plastic component in the mixture. Technological tests showed that increasing the amount of the plasticizing additive by 35% (from 50% to 85%) results in a decrease in the minimal thickness of the thin-walled element that can be successfully injection molded by about 32% in the case of PLA/PBAT blends (from 0.22 mm to 0.15 mm) and by about 26% in the case of PLA/TPS blends (from 0.23 mm to 0.17 mm). Next, the thin-walled elements (dimensions of 55 × 55 × 20 mm) were manufactured and evaluated using a spring-loaded drop hammer. The 60 J impact energy was tested in accordance with the EN 1078 standard. The dynamic crushing test included checking the influence of the materials' temperature (−20, 0, 20, and 40 °C) and the impact velocity. It was proven that the maximum deflection increases with increasing material temperature and an increase in the share of the plastic component in the mixture. The PLA15PBAT85 blend was selected as the most effective material in terms of its use as an energy-absorbing liner for sport helmets. Johnson–Cook and Cowper–Symonds material plasticizing models were constructed. In the present paper, we present an electron magnetic resonance (EMR) study of Ni 50.2 Mn 28.3 Ga 21.5 powders obtained from melt-spun ribbons in the milling process. We registered EMR spectra in various temperatures at the X-band. In the EMR spectra recorded for the samples taken at the beginning of the milling process, the "training effect" was observed. After 2 h of milling, this phenomenon was no longer observed. To determine the basic EMR parameters, such as linewidth, resonance field, and asymmetry parameters, the experimental data were fitted using a single metallic Lorentz line. In high-temperature regions, we observed the influence of dispersion on the shape of the spectra, but as the temperature decreased, the asymmetry of line was reduced. The shift in the resonance field value at high temperatures and the temperature dependence of the linewidth below Curie temperature indicate that the investigated samples exhibited a characteristics of a spin-glass alloy. With the booming of renewable clean energies towards reducing carbon emission, demands for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in applications to transportation vehicles and power stations are increasing exponentially. As a consequence, great pressures have been posed on the technological development and production of valuable elements key to LIBs, in addition to concerns about depletion of natural resources, environmental impacts, and management of waste batteries. In this paper, we compile recent information on lithium, nickel, and cobalt, the three most crucial elements utilized in LIBs, in terms of demands, current identified terrestrial resources, extraction technologies from primary natural resources and waste. Most nickel and cobalt are currently produced from high-grade sulfide ores via a pyrometallurgical approach. Increased demands have stimulated production of Ni and Co from low-grade laterites, which is commonly performed through the hydrometallurgical process. Most lithium exists in brines and is extracted via evaporation–precipitation in common industrial practice. It is noteworthy that at present, the pyrometallurgical process is energy-intensive and polluting in terms of gas emissions. Hydrometallurgical processes utilize large amounts of alkaline or acidic media in combination with reducing agents, generating hazardous waste streams. Traditional evaporation–precipitation consumes time, water, and land. Extraction of these elements from deep seas and recycling from waste are emerging as technologies. Advanced energy-saving and environmentally friendly processes are under extensive research and development and are crucial in the process of renewable clean energy implementation. High-entropy alloys (HEA) are promising structural materials that will successfully resist high-temperature irradiation with helium ions and radiation-induced swelling in new generations of nuclear reactors. In this paper, changes in the elemental and phase composition, surface morphology, and structure of CoCrFeNi and CoCrFeMnNi HEAs irradiated with He2+ ions at a temperature of 700 °C were studied. Structural studies were mainly conducted using the X-ray diffraction method. The formation of a porous surface structure with many microchannels (open blisters) was observed. The average diameter of the blisters in CoCrFeMnNi is around 1.3 times smaller than in CoCrFeNi. It was shown that HEAs' elemental and phase compositions are stable under high-temperature irradiation. It was revealed that, in the region of the peak of implanted helium, high-temperature irradiation leads to the growth of tensile macrostresses in CoCrFeNi by 3.6 times and the formation of compressive macrostresses (−143 MPa) in CoCrFeMnNi; microstresses in the HEAs increase by 2.4 times; and the dislocation density value increases by 4.3 and 7.5 times for CoCrFeNi and CoCrFeMnNi, respectively. The formation of compressive macrostresses and a higher value of dislocation density indicate that the CoCrFeMnNi HEA tends to have greater radiation resistance compared to CoCrFeNi. This research focuses on investigating the buckling strength of thin-walled composite structures featuring various shapes of holes, laminates, and composite materials. A parametric study is conducted to optimize and identify the most suitable combination of material and structural parameters, ensuring the resilience of structure under both mechanical and thermal loads. Initially, a numerical approach employing the finite element method is used to design the C-section thin-walled composite structure. Later, various structural and material parameters like spacing ratio, opening ratio, hole shape, fiber orientation, and laminate sequence are systematically varied. Subsequently, simulation data from numerous cases are utilized to identify the best parameter combination using machine learning algorithms. Various ML techniques such as linear regression, lasso regression, decision tree, random forest, and gradient boosting are employed to assess their accuracy in comparison with finite element results. As a result, the simulation model showcases the variation in critical buckling load when altering the structural and material properties. Additionally, the machine learning models successfully predict the optimal critical buckling load under mechanical and thermal loading conditions. In directed energy deposition (DED), accurately controlling and predicting melt pool characteristics is essential for ensuring desired material qualities and geometric accuracies. This paper introduces a robust surrogate model based on recurrent neural network (RNN) architectures—Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). Leveraging a time series dataset from multi-physics simulations and a three-factor, three-level experimental design, the model accurately predicts melt pool peak temperatures, lengths, widths, and depths under varying conditions. RNN algorithms, particularly Bi-LSTM, demonstrate high predictive accuracy, with an R-square of 0.983 for melt pool peak temperatures. For melt pool geometry, the GRU-based model excels, achieving R-square values above 0.88 and reducing computation time by at least 29%, showcasing its accuracy and efficiency. This paper deals with the issue of the bond of concrete with the new artificial aggregate Certyd to prestressing steel strands. The solution of the problem is of great importance in the development of the use of lightweight aggregate concrete for prestressed concrete elements. Experimental research on the bond stress–slip relationship of concrete to 15.7 mm non-pretensioned steel strand was carried out. The results of bond stress–slip tests for various embedment lengths (40, 80, 120, 240, 330 and 460 mm) for test specimens made of the same lightweight aggregate concrete mixture, in which the transfer of prestressing force took place at different levels of concrete maturity (after 3, 7 and 28 days of concrete maturing), are presented. Based on the obtained results, an analytical model of the bond stress–slip relationship of lightweight aggregate Certyd concrete to 15.7 mm non-pretensioned steel strand was proposed. Modeling the dynamic properties of wood and wood-based composites is a challenging task due to naturally growing structure and moisture-dependent material properties. This paper presents the finite element modeling of plywood panels' dynamic properties. Two panels differing in thickness were analyzed: (i) 18 mm and (ii) 27 mm. The developed models consisted of individual layers of wood, which were discretized using three-dimensional finite elements formulated using an orthotropic material model. The models were subjected to an updating procedure based on experimentally determined frequency response functions. As a result of a model updating relative errors for natural frequencies obtained numerically and experimentally were not exceeding 2.0%, on average 0.7% for 18 mm thick panel and not exceeding 2.6%, on average 1.5% for 27 mm thick panel. To prove the utility of the method and at the same time to validate it, a model of a cabinet was built, which was then subjected to experimental verification. The steelmaking–continuous casting process (SCCP) is a complex manufacturing process which exhibits the distinct features of process manufacturing. The SCCP involves a variety of production elements, such as multiple process routes, a wide array of smelting and auxiliary devices, and a variety of raw and auxiliary materials. The production-simulation of SCCP holds a natural advantage in being able to accurately depict the intricate production behavior involved, and this serves as a crucial tool for optimizing the production operation of the SCCP. This paper thoroughly considers the various production elements involved in the SCCP, such as the fluctuation of the converter smelting cycle, fluctuation of heat weight, and ladle operation. Based on the Plant Simulation software platform, a dynamic simulation model of the SCCP is established and detailed descriptions are provided regarding the design of an SCCP using dynamic-operation rules. Additionally, a dynamic operational control program for the SCCP is developed using the SimTalk language, one which ensures the continuous operation of the caster in the SCCP, using the discrete simulation platform. The effectiveness of the proposed dynamic simulation model is verified by the total completion time of the production plan, the transfer time of the heat among the different processes, and the frequency of ladle turnover. The simulation's results indicate that the dynamic simulation model has a satisfactory effect in simulating the actual production process. On this basis, the application effects of different schedules are compared and analyzed. Compared with a heuristic schedule, the optimized schedule based on the "furnace–machine coordinating" mode reduces the weighted value of total completion time by 8.7 min, reduces the weighted value of transfer waiting time by 45.5 min, and the number of rescheduling times is also reduced, demonstrating a better application effect and verifying the optimizing effect of the "furnace–machine coordinating" mode on the schedule. Polyethylene oxide (PEO) has become a highly sought−after polymer electrolyte for lithium−ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high ionic conductivity, strong mechanical properties, and broad electrochemical stability range. However, its usefulness is hindered by its limited ionic conductivity at typical temperatures (<60 °C). Many researchers have delved into the integration of active fillers into the PEO matrix to improve the ionic conductivity and overall efficiency of composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) for LIBs. This review delves deeply into the latest developments and insights in CPEs for LIBs, focusing on the role of PEO–active filler composites. It explores the impact of different types and morphologies of active fillers on the electrochemical behavior of CPEs. Additionally, it explores the mechanisms that contribute to the improved ionic conductivity and Li−ion transport in PEO−based CPEs. This paper also emphasizes the present obstacles and prospects in the advancement of CPEs containing PEO–active filler composites for LIBs. This paper conducted a high-temperature storage test (HTST) on bonded samples made of Pd100 (Pd-coated Cu wire with a Pd layer thickness of 100 nm) and Pd120, and studied the growth law of Cu-Ag intermetallic compounds and the inhibitory mechanism of Pd thickness on Cu-Ag intermetallic compounds. The results show that the Kirkendall effect at the bonding interface of the Pd100-bonded sample is more obvious after the HTST, the sizes of voids and cracks are larger, and the thickness of intermetallic compounds is uneven. But, the bonding interface of the Pd120-bonded sample has almost no microcracks, the Kirkendall voids are small, and the intermetallic compound size is uniform and relatively thin. The formation sequence of intermetallic compounds is as follows: Cu atoms diffuse into the Ag layer to form Ag-rich compounds such as CuAg4 or CuAg2, and then the CuAg forms with the increase in diffused Cu elements. Pd can significantly reduce the Kirkendall effect and slow down the growth of Cu-Ag intermetallic compounds. The growth rate of intermetallic compounds is too fast when the Cu bonding wire has a thin Pd layer, which results in holes and microcracks in the bonding interface and lead to the peeling of the bonding interface. Processing of cast-iron castings by machining is associated with a large amount of post-production waste in the form of cast-iron chips, which constitute up to about 5% of the weight of the entire casting. In the case of serial production, this generates large amounts of post-production waste, constituting a constantly growing scale of environmental problems. The aim of this research was to develop a simple and cheap method of utilizing post-production waste of gray cast-iron chips from the machining process for the production of small structural elements of water supply fittings. The analysis of the state of knowledge indicates that the simplest method of managing waste chips is to use them as a starting material in the process of manufacturing polymer composites. The most frequently chosen material for the matrix of polymer composites reinforced with metal powders is epoxy resin. The epoxy composite was produced by the vacuum-assisted casting method. This paper presents the results of tests of morphological, mechanical, and corrosion properties of epoxy composites filled with grey cast-iron powder with a grain size below 0.075 mm and a mass content in the composite of 65%. The composite cured at 130 °C for 90 min had the best mechanical properties. The sample cured at 130 °C for 90 min was observed to have the optimum effect, with a tensile strength of 28.35 MPa, a flexural strength of 55.4 MPa, and a compressive strength of 53.8 MPa. All tested composites were characterized by very good thermal resistance and, in comparison to gray cast iron, over 2.5 times lower weight and an over three times lower corrosion rate in the tap water environment. The effect of extreme water repellency, called the lotus effect, is caused by the formation of a Cassie–Baxter state in which only a small portion of the wetting liquid droplet is in contact with the surface. The rest of the bottom of the droplet is in contact with air pockets. Instrumental methods are often used to determine the textural features that cause this effect—scanning electron and atomic force microscopies, profilometry, etc. However, this result provides only an accurate texture model, not the actual information about the part of the surface that is wetted by the liquid. Here, we show a practical method for estimating the surface fraction of texture that has contact with liquid in a Cassie–Baxter wetting state. The method is performed using a set of ethanol–water mixtures to determine the contact angle of the textured and chemically equivalent flat surfaces of AlSI 304 steel, 7500 aluminum, and siloxane elastomer. We showed that the system of Cassie–Baxter equations can be solved graphically by the wetting diagrams introduced in this paper, returning a value for the texture surface fraction in contact with a liquid. Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques are among the fastest-growing technologies for producing even the most geometrically complex models. Unfortunately, the lack of development of metrology guidelines for these methods, related to dimensional and geometry accuracy and surface roughness, significantly limits the commercialization of finished products manufactured using these methods. This paper aims to evaluate the macro- and micro-geometry of models manufactured using the PolyJet method from three types of photopolymer resins: Digital ABS Plus, RGD 720, and Vero Clear. For this purpose, test parts were designed and then manufactured on an Object 350 Connex3 3D printer. The Atos II Triple Scan optical system and the InfiniteFocusG4 microscope were used to evaluate macro- and micro-geometry, respectively. For both systems, measurement procedures were developed to obtain statistical results for evaluating geometric accuracy and surface roughness parameters. In the case of macro-geometry, for Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear materials, 50% of the central deviations (between first quartile Q1 and third quartile Q3) lie within the range (−0.06, 0.03 mm) and for RGD 720 material within the range (−0.08, 0.01 mm). For micro-geometry, the arithmetic mean height (Sa) values for the Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear samples were approximately 1.6 and 2.0 µm, respectively, while for RGD 720, it was 15.9 µm. The total roughness height expressed by reduced peak height (Spk) + core height (Sk) + reduced dale depth (Svk) for the Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear samples was approximately 9.1 and 10.5 µm, respectively, while for the RGD 720, it was 101.9 µm. This paper investigates the effectiveness of applying continuous high-compression pressure on the initial setting of fresh concrete to produce hardened concrete materials with excellent mechanical properties. A novel experimental apparatus was self-designed and used for the pre-setting pressure application. The utilization of the completely decomposed granite (CDG) soil as an alternative aggregate in concrete production was also explored. A total of twenty-eight specimens were fabricated using two types of fine aggregates, six mix ratios, two initial pressure values, and two distinct durations of the initial pressure application. The density and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the specimens were examined to evaluate their mechanical qualities, while micro-CT tests with image analysis were used to quantify their porosity. The results indicated that the 10 MPa initial pre-setting pressurization can effectively eliminate the excess air and voids within the fresh concrete, therefore enhancing the mechanical properties of the hardened concrete specimens of various types. Compared with non-pressurized specimens, the porosity values of pressurized specimens were reduced by 73.11% to 86.53%, the density values were increased by 1.43% to 8.31%, and the UCS values were increased by 8.42% to 187.43%. These findings provide a reference for using a continuous high pre-setting compression pressure and using CDG soil as an aggregate in the fabrication of concrete materials with improved mechanical performance. In this study, we prepared a low-cost novel Cu/Cu2O/BC nanocomposite visible-light photocatalyst by the impregnation method using CuSO4·5H2O and rice husk biochar (BC) as raw materials and Na2S2O4 as a single reductant to improve the stability and dispersion of the Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles, in order to solve their aggregation tendency during photocatalysis. The morphology and structure of the Cu/Cu2O/BC were characterized using various analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The photocatalytic effect and cyclic stability of the synthesized photocatalyst on methyl orange (MO) removal were investigated under visible light radiation and various parameter conditions, including the mass ratio of BC to Cu/Cu2O, initial MO concentration, pH, temperature, and catalyst dosage. The results show that the synthesized Cu/Cu2O/BC nanocomposite composed of Cu/Cu2O spherical particles was loaded on the BC carrier, which has better stability and dispersion. The best adsorption–photocatalytic effect of the Cu/Cu2O/BC is exhibited when the mass ratio of BC to Cu/Cu2O is 0.2. A total of 100 mg of Cu/Cu2O/BC can remove 95% of the MO and 88.26% of the COD in the aqueous solution at pH = 6, T = 25 °C, and an initial MO concentration of 100 mg/L. After five cycles of degradation, the MO degradation rate in the sample can still remain at 78.41%. Both the quasi-secondary kinetic model and the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model describe the adsorption process. Additionally, the thermodynamic analysis demonstrates that the photocatalytic process follows the quasi-primary kinetic model and that the removal process is of spontaneous heat absorption. This paper presents the experimental results of a study evaluating the mechanical and fatigue performance of welded Fe-Mn-Si SMA. For the experimental study, welded and welded-and-heat-treated Fe-Mn-Si SMA specimens were fabricated, and fatigue tests were performed at various stress amplitudes. In addition, direct tensile tests and recovery stress tests were also performed to evaluate the material properties of Fe-Mn-Si SMAs. The elastic modulus, yield strength, and tensile strength of the welded specimens were reduced by 35.4%, 12.1%, and 8.6%, respectively, compared to the values of the non-welded specimens. On the other hand, the elastic modulus, yield strength, and tensile strength of the welded-and-heat-treated Fe-Mn-Si SMA specimens were increased by 18.6%, 4.9%, and 1.3%, respectively, compared to the values of the welded specimens. Both welded and welded-and-heat-treated Fe-Mn-Si SMAs failed at lower cycles than the conventional Fe-Mn-Si SMAs at the same stress amplitude. High-cycle fatigue failure, characterized by cycles exceeding 104, typically occurs at relatively low stress levels within the elastic region, whereas low-cycle fatigue failure, generally occurring within cycles below 104, involves high stress levels that encompass both elastic and plastic deformation. The paper presents an analysis of the effective use of a mixture of steel sludge (S1) and slag (S2) from the converter process of steel production for the production of cement mortars. Metallurgical waste used in the research, which is currently deposited in waste landfills and heaps near plants, posing a threat to groundwater (possibility of leaching metal ions present in the waste), was used as a substitute for natural sand in the range of 0–20% by weight of cement (each). The obtained test results and their numerical analysis made it possible to determine the conditions for replacing part of the sand in cement mortars with a mixture of sludge and slag from a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and to determine the effects of such modification. For the numerical analysis, a full quadratic Response Surface Model (RSM) was utilized for two controlled factors. This model was subsequently optimized through backward stepwise regression, ensuring the inclusion of only statistically significant components and verifying the consistency of residual distribution with the normal distribution (tested via Ryan-Joiner's test, p > 0.1). The designated material models are helpful in designing ecological cement mortars using difficult-to-recycle waste (i.e., sludge and converter slag), which is important for a circular economy. Mortars modified with a mixture of metallurgical waste (up to 20% each) are characterized by a slightly lower consistency, compressive and flexural strength, and water absorption. However, they show a lower decrease in mechanical strength after the freezing–thawing process (frost resistance) compared to control mortars. Mortars modified with metallurgical waste do not have a negative impact on the environment in terms of leaching heavy metal ions. The use of a mixture of sludge and steel slag in the amount of 40% (slag/sludge in a 20/20 ratio) allows you to save 200 kg of sand when producing 1 m3 of cement mortar (cost reduction by approx. Urban construction generates significant amounts of construction residue soil. This paper introduces a novel soil stabilizer based on industrial waste to improve its utilization. This stabilizer is primarily composed of blast furnace slag (BFS), steel slag (SS), phosphogypsum (PG), and other additives, which enhance soil strength through physical and chemical processes. This study investigated the mechanical properties of construction residue soil cured with this stabilizer, focusing on the effects of organic matter content (Oo), stabilizer dosage (Oc), and curing age (T) on unconfined compressive strength (UCS). Additionally, water stability and wet–dry cycle tests of the stabilized soil were conducted to assess long-term performance. According to the findings, the UCS increased with the higher stabilizer dosage and longer curing periods but reduced with the higher organic matter content. A stabilizer content of 15–20% is recommended for optimal stabilization efficacy and cost-efficiency in engineering applications. The samples lost their strength when immersed in water. However, adding more stabilizers to the soil can effectively enhance its water stability. Under wet–dry cycle conditions, the UCS initially increased and then decreased, remaining lower than that of samples cured under standard conditions. The aim of the work presented in this paper was development of a thermodynamically consistent constitutive model for orthotopic metals and determination of its parameters based on standard characterisation methods used in the aerospace industry. The model was derived with additive decomposition of the strain tensor and consisted of an elastic part, derived from Helmholtz free energy, Hill's thermodynamic potential, which controls evolution of plastic deformation, and damage orthotopic potential, which controls evolution of damage in material. Damage effects were incorporated using the continuum damage mechanics approach, with the effective stress and energy equivalence principle. Material characterisation and derivation of model parameters was conducted with standard specimens with a uniform cross-section, although a number of tests with non-uniform cross-sections were also conducted here. The tests were designed to assess the extent of damage in material over a range of plastic deformation values, where displacement was measured locally using digital image correlation. The new model was implemented as a user material subroutine in Abaqus and verified and validated against the experimental results for aerospace-grade aluminium alloy 2024-T3. Verification was conducted in a series of single element tests, designed to separately validate elasticity, plasticity and damage-related parts of the model. Validation at this stage of the development was based on comparison of the numerical results with experimental data obtained in the quasistatic characterisation tests, which illustrated the ability of the modelling approach to predict experimentally observed behaviour. A validated user material subroutine allows for efficient simulation-led design improvements of aluminium components, such as stiffened panels and the other thin-wall structures used in the aerospace industry. The disposal of stone waste derived from the stone industry is a worldwide problem. The shortage of landfills, as well as transport costs and environmental pollution, pose a crucial problem. Additionally, as a substitute for cement that has high carbon emissions, energy consumption, and pollution, the disposal of stone wastes by utilizing solid waste-based binders as road base materials can achieve the goal of "waste for waste". However, the mechanical properties and deterioration mechanism of solid waste-based binder solidified stone waste as a road base material under complex environments remains incompletely understood. This paper reveals the durability performance of CGF all-solid waste binder (consisting of calcium carbide residue, ground granulated blast furnace slag, and fly ash) solidified stone waste through the macro and micro properties under dry–wet and freeze–thaw cycling conditions. The results showed that the dry–wet and freeze–thaw cycles have similar patterns of impacts on the CGF and cement stone waste road base materials, i.e., the stress–strain curves and damage forms were similar in exhibiting the strain-softening type, and the unconfined compressive strengths all decreased with the number of cycles and then tended to stabilize. However, the influence of dry–wet and freeze–thaw cycles on the deterioration degree was significantly different; CGF showed excellent resistance to dry–wet cycles, whereas cement was superior in freeze–thaw resistance. The deterioration grade of CGF and cement ranged from 36.15 to 47.72% and 39.38 to 47.64%, respectively, after 12 dry–wet cycles, whereas it ranged from 57.91 to 64.48% and 36.61 to 40.00% after 12 freeze–thaw cycles, respectively. The combined use of MIP and SEM confirmed that the deterioration was due to the increase in the porosity and cracks induced by dry–wet and freeze–thaw cycles, which in turn enhanced the deterioration phenomenon. This can be ascribed to the fact that small pores occupy the largest proportion and contribute to the deterioration process, and the deterioration caused by dry–wet cycles is associated with the formation of large pores through the connection of small pores, while the freeze–thaw damage is due to the increase in medium pores that are more susceptible to water intrusion. This paper presents the results of an analysis of resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and offers solutions and technologies for manufacturing castings of components for critical applications, such as blades for gas turbine engines (GTEs). The values of the technological parameters for directional crystallization (DC) are determined, allowing the production of castings with a regular dendritic structure of the crystallization front in the range of 10 to 12 mm/min and a temperature gradient at the crystallization front in the range of 165–175 °C/cm. The technological process of making GTE blades has been improved by using a scheme for obtaining disposable models of complex profile castings with the use of 3D printing for the manufacture of ceramic molds. The ceramic mold is obtained through an environmentally friendly technology using water-based binders. Short-term tensile testing of the samples in gaseous hydrogen revealed high hydrogen resistance of the CM-88 alloy produced by directed crystallization technology: the relative elongation in hydrogen at a pressure of 30 MPa increased from 2% for the commercial alloy to 8% for the experimental single-crystal alloy. Honeycomb structures made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) are increasingly used in the aerospace field due to their excellent energy absorption capability. Attention has been paid to CFRP structures in order to accurately simulate their progressive failure behavior and discuss their ply designability. In this study, the preparation process of a CFRP corrugated sheet (half of the honeycomb structure) and a CFRP honeycomb structure was illustrated. The developed finite element method was verified by a quasi-static test, which was then used to predict the low-velocity impact (LVI) behavior of the CFRP honeycomb, and ultimately, the influence of the ply angle and number on energy absorption was discussed. The results show that the developed finite element method (including the user-defined material subroutine VUMAT) can reproduce the progressive failure behavior of the CFRP corrugated sheet under quasi-static compression and also estimate the LVI behavior. The angle and number of plies of the honeycomb structure have an obvious influence on their energy absorption under LVI. Among them, energy absorption increases with the ply number, but the specific energy absorption is basically constant. The velocity drop ratios for the five different ply angles are 79.12%, 68.49%, 66.88%, 66.86%, and 60.02%, respectively. Therefore, the honeycomb structure with [0/90]s ply angle had the best energy absorption effect. The model proposed in this paper has the potential to significantly reduce experimental expenses, while the research findings can provide valuable technical support for design optimization in aerospace vehicle structures. Silica fume (SF) is an essential component in ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) to compact the matrix, but the nucleus effect also causes rapid hydration, which results in high heat release and large shrinkage. In this paper, the carboxylic agents, including polyacrylic acid and polycarboxylate superplasticizer, were used to surface modify SF to adjust the activity to mitigate hydration at an early time and to promote continuous hydration for a long period. The surface and dispersion properties of modified SF (MSF), as well as the strength and pore structure of UHPC, were studied, and the stability of the modification was also investigated. The results demonstrated that, after treatment, the carboxylic groups were grafted on the SF surface, the dispersion of SF was improved due to the increased negative pentanal of the particle surface and the steric hindrance effect, the early hydration was delayed about 3–5 h, and the hydration heat release was also mitigated. The compressive strength of UHPC with MSF reached a maximum of 138.7 MPa at 3 days, which decreased about 3.7% more than the plain group, while flexural strength varied insignificantly. More pores and cracks were observed in the matrix with MSF, and the hydration degree was promoted with MSF addition. The grafted group on SF fell off under an alkali environment after 1 h. With the rapid advancement of 3D-printing technology, additive manufacturing using FDM extrusion has emerged as a prominent method in manufacturing. However, it encounters certain limitations, notably in surface quality and dimensional accuracy. Addressing issues related to stability and surface roughness necessitates the integration of 3D-printing technology with traditional machining, a strategy known as the hybrid technique. This paper presents a study of the surface geometric parameters and microstructure of plastic parts produced by FDM. Sleeve-shaped samples were 3D-printed from polyethylene terephthalate glycol material using variable layer heights of 0.1 mm and 0.2 mm and then subjected to the turning process with PVD-coated DCMT11T304 turning inserts using variable cutting parameters. The cutting depth was constant at 0.82 mm. Surface roughness values were correlated with the cutting tool feed rate and the printing layer height applied. The selected specimen's microstructure was studied with a Zeiss EVO MA 15 scanning electron microscope. The roundness was measured with a Keyence VR-6200 3D optical profilometer. The research results confirmed that the additional application of turning, combined with a reduction in the feed rate (0.0506 mm/rev) and the height of the printed layer (0.1 mm), reduced the surface roughness of the sleeve (Ra = 1.94 μm) and increased its geometric accuracy. For space missions to either the Moon or Mars, protecting mechanical moving parts from the abrasive effects of prevailing surface dust is crucial. This paper compares the abrasive effects of two lunar and two Martian simulant regoliths using special pin-on-disc tests on a stainless steel/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sealing material pair. Due to the regolith particles entering the contact zone, a three-body abrasion mechanism took place. We found that friction coefficients stabilised between 0.2 and 0.4 for all simulants. Wear curves, surface roughness measurements, and microscopic images all suggest a significantly lower abrasion effect of the Martian regoliths than that of the lunar ones. It applies not only to steel surfaces but also to the PTFE pins. The dominant abrasive micro-mechanism of the disc surface is micro-ploughing in the case of all tests, while the transformation of the counterface is mixed. Al-Mg alloys are widely used as important engineering structural materials in aerospace engineering, transportation systems, and structural constructions due to their low density, high specific strength, corrosion resistance, welding capability, fatigue strength, and cost-effectiveness. However, the conventional Al-Mg alloys can no longer fully satisfy the demands of practical production due to difficulties caused by many defects. The high strength of Al-Mg alloys as non-heat treatment precipitation-strengthened alloys is achieved primarily by solid solution strengthening along with work hardening rather than precipitation strengthening. Therefore, severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques can be often used to produce ultrafine-grained structures to fabricate ultra-high strength aluminum alloys. However, this approach often achieves the strengthening of material at the cost of reduced ductility. This paper comprehensively summarizes the various approaches of ultrafine/nanocrystalline materials for enhancing their plasticity, elaborates on the creation of a bimodal microstructure within the alloy, and discusses the formation of a nanotwin microstructure within the alloy and the incorporation of dispersed nanoparticles. The mechanisms underlying both the strengthening and toughening during large plastic deformation in aluminum alloys are summarized, and the future research direction of high-performance ultrafine crystalline and nanocrystalline Al-Mg aluminum alloys is prospected. Due to its exceptional mechanical and chemical properties at high temperatures, Inconel 718 is extensively utilized in industries such as aerospace, aviation, and marine. Investigating the flow behavior of Inconel 718 under high strain rates and high temperatures is vital for comprehending the dynamic characteristics of the material in manufacturing processes. This paper introduces a physics-based constitutive model that accounts for dislocation motion and its density evolution, capable of simulating the plastic behavior of Inconel 718 during large strain deformations caused by machining processes. Utilizing a microstructure-based flow stress model, the machinability of Inconel 718 in terms of cutting forces and temperatures is quantitatively predicted and compared with results from orthogonal cutting experiments. The model's predictive precision, with a margin of error between 5 and 8%, ensures reliable consistency and enhances our comprehension of the high-speed machining dynamics of Inconel 718 components. The impact of perforation patterns on the compressive strength of cardboard packaging is a critical concern in the packaging industry, where optimizing material usage without compromising structural integrity is essential. This study aims to investigate how different perforation designs affect the load-bearing capacity of cardboard boxes. Utilizing finite element method (FEM) simulations, we assessed the compressive strength of packaging made of various types of corrugated cardboards, including E, B, C, EB, and BC flutes with different heights. Mechanical testing was conducted to obtain accurate material properties for the simulations. Packaging dimensions were varied to generalize the findings across different sizes. Results showed that perforation patterns significantly influenced the compressive strength, with reductions ranging from 14% to 43%, compared to non-perforated packaging. Notably, perforations on multiple walls resulted in the highest strength reductions. The study concludes that while perforations are necessary for functionality and aesthetics, their design must be carefully considered to minimize negative impacts on structural integrity. With the rapid development of the construction industry worldwide, a large amount of waste concrete is generated each year, which has caused serious environmental problems. As a green and sustainable building material, thermally activated recycled cement (RC) has received widespread attention. However, the unique properties of RC, such as the high water demand and short setting time, necessitate the use of specialized superplasticizers that are different from those used in ordinary Portland cement. As an important component for the application of RC, superplasticizer has an important impact on the performance modification of RC. This article summarizes the recent research progress of potential superplasticizers for RC, with a view to providing a reference for the research and application of superplasticizers for RC. Based on the differences between ordinary Portland cement and RC, the paper discusses potential superplasticizers that may be suitable for RC, and points out that future development of potential modified superplasticizers can include altering the molecular structure to improve adsorption onto the surfaces of RC or to enhance the durability of concrete with RC. The commonly used aluminum–copper alloys in industry are mainly rolled plates and extruded or drawn bars. The aluminum–copper alloys' anisotropy generated in the manufacturing process is unfavorable for subsequent applications. Its underlying mechanism shall be interpreted from a microscopic perspective. This paper conducted the loading simulation on Al–4%Cu alloy crystals at the microscopic scale with molecular dynamics technology. Uniaxial tension and compression loading were carried out along three orientations: X-< 1 ¯ 12 >, Y-< 1 1 ¯ 1 >, and Z-<110>. It analyzes the micro-mechanisms that affect the performance changes of aluminum–copper alloys through the combination of stress–strain curves and different organizational analysis approaches. As shown by the results, the elastic modulus and yield strength are the highest under tension along the < 1 1 ¯ 1 > direction. Such is the case for the reasons below: The close-packed plane of atoms ensures large atomic binding forces. In addition, the Stair-rod dislocation forms a Lomer–Cottrell dislocation lock, which has a strengthening effect on the material. The elastic modulus and yield strength are the smallest under tension along the <110> direction, and the periodic arrangement of HCP atom stacking faults serves as the main deformation mechanism. This is because the atomic arrangement on the <110> plane is relatively loose, which tends to cause atomic misalignment. When compressed in different directions, the plastic deformation mechanism is mainly dominated by dislocations and stacking faults. When compressed along the <110> direction, it has a relatively high dislocation density and the maximum yield strength. That should be attributed to the facts below. As the atomic arrangement of the <110> plane itself was not dense originally, compression loading would cause an increasingly tighter arrangement. In such a case, the stress could only be released through dislocations. Clays are components in the fine portion of aggregates, less than 75 microns in size (micro-fines), which are usually washed away when producing coarse or fine (manufactured sand) aggregates in quarries. When marginal sources of aggregates are being used, the content of this washed portion can be quite high, and there is an incentive to keep as much of it in the aggregate, including the clays. The present paper presents a comprehensive treatment of the role of clays in terms of the characterization of their composition and quantification of their effects on the rheological and mechanical properties of cementitious systems, as well as the means to mitigate deleterious influences. It is shown that the strategy for neutralizing the effect of micro-fines containing clays on increased water demand in concrete can be quantified in terms of the combination of their content in concrete and their nature as characterized by the methylene blue value (MBV); this is a more rational approach to considering their influence than their content in specific aggregates as specified in standards. The effect of low and medium MBV aggregates on the water requirement can be neutralized by lignosulfonates when their content in the concrete is below a threshold value of about 150 kg/m3; polycarboxylates (PC) are required at higher contents; for high MBV aggregates, a combination of PC and clay mitigating admixture (CMA) is required. It is also demonstrated that with proper treatment, such micro-fines can be turned into useful fillers, enhancing the strength of concrete and thus also serving as a means for reducing cement content. The paper aims at documenting the material employed in 1942 for the fabrication of an exhaust valve for a Harley-Davidson WLA/WLC motorcycle and assesses the material features with modern steel standard specifications and treatment. Facing properties of the original historical parts of technical heritage objects according to modern standards is a rare discipline, as these objects are nowadays in collections of museums or private collectors and experimental instrumental analyses are strictly forbidden. In this case, a preserved accessible unused surplus replacement kit was studied. The microstructure was assessed by light optical and scanning electron microscopy, electron probe micro-analysis and by heat treatment–hardness correlation. It was found that the valve was made of Silchrome 1 steel in coherence with the X45CrSi9-3 steel modern material standard, but with a slightly higher content of phosphorus and sulfur. Microscopic observations and hardness profile testing suggested a tempered martensitic structure (sorbite) with very fine grains uniformly distributed in the valve and an even heat treatment. Heat treatment–hardness experimentation demonstrated that the original heat treatment cannot be achieved by the modern standard procedure. The tempering temperature was surprisingly deduced to be lower than the recommended one according to the modern standard, which contrasts with the service temperature indicated in the contemporary motorcycle mechanics handbook.
