Recently, as the use of wearable devices and the demand for eco-friendly energy have increased, many studies have been conducted on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which can economically harvest energy. Paper is considered a promising substrate and frame material that can be used to manufacture self-powered TENGs, owing to its flexibility, low cost, and accessibility. Herein, we present a sandwich-structured foldable paper-based TENG (FP-TENG) that comprises flexible materials and uses paper as a substrate. The FP-TENG can generate up to 572 mW/m2 of power via contact–separation of the triboelectric electrified body at the top and bottom. With more folds of the FP-TENG, the triboelectric cross-sectional area increases, and, thus, the electrical output increases. In addition, the proposed TENG exhibits excellent durability without signal degradation under 5000 cycles of repeated pushing motions. To demonstrate its practicality, the FP-TENG was manufactured in the form of a wristwatch Velcro and connected to an electronic watch panel to supply power. Various deformations are possible with origami, and they can drive wristwatches through external forces. In this paper, the notion of a cohesive and self-sufficient grid is proposed. Based on a cohesive and self-sufficient virtual microgrid, an active distribution network is optimally planned, and an optimal configuration of demand-side resources, distributed generations, and energy storage systems are generated. To cope with stochastic uncertainty from forecast error in wind speed and load, flexibility reserves are needed. In this paper, the supply relation between flexibility and uncertainty is quantified and integrated in an innovative index which is defined as cohesion. The optimization objectives are a minimized operational cost and system net-ability cohesion as well as self-sufficiency, which is defined as the abilities both to supply local load and to deal with potential uncertainty. After testing the optimal configuration in the PG&E 69 bus system, it is found that with a more cohesive VM partition, the self-sufficiency of VMs is also increased. The research problem of this paper is related to numerous open questions in the field of energy, its understanding, its use, and the challenges of the energy future. After the introductory part, in which a brief historical overview of energy literacy is provided, the paper focuses on energy literacy, its emergence, and the different approaches to its definition and measurement. The paper analyzes the energy literacy of students at the Faculty of Economics in Rijeka based on their cognitive, affective, and behavioral skills. Their knowledge about energy, energy processes, and the energy efficiency of the objects they encounter on a daily basis is examined. Their personal attitudes and values are examined through various forms of personal initiatives and active participation in energy sustainability projects. Finally, the habits and behavioral patterns that the respondents have in their daily lives and their tendencies to save energy resources and find energy-efficient solutions are examined. Despite some positive findings, the current results are not satisfactory and point to the creation of adequate public policies with a particular focus on education and the role of the corrective mechanisms of the state, but also the need for joint negotiations between policy makers, regulators, scientists, representatives of civil society, and the business community. The particular contribution of this work is reflected in being the first research of its kind conducted among Croatian economics students, as well as among Croatian students in general; in the creation of a research instrument that is conceptually consistent with the findings from the existing literature, but with an original set of questions within each energy literacy skill adapted to the cultural and sociological background of the respondents; and in a kind of progress from previous research by taking into account the quantitative aspect (in addition to the qualitative) assessment of the respondents' energy literacy. Due to a rising share of renewable energy sources on the production side and electrification of transport and heating on the consumption side, the efficient management of flexibility in distribution networks is crucial for ensuring optimal operation and utilization of resources. Nowadays, the sensitivity-based approach is mainly used in medium-voltage (MV) networks for regulating voltage profiles with reactive power of distributed energy resources (DER). The main disadvantage of the simplified sensitivity-based method is its inaccuracy in case of a high deviation of the network voltage from the nominal values. Furthermore, it was also noted that despite the fact that the method is well described in the literature, there is a lack of systematic approach to its implementation in real-life applications. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to address this disadvantage and to propose an algorithm designed to calculate required consumer flexibility in near real-time to ensure distribution grid operation within operational criteria. In the first part of the paper, network state, including line loading and node voltages, is assessed to determine distribution network node capacity. By analyzing the sensitivity of network busbars to changes in consumption and production, our algorithm effectively identifies the most efficient nodes and facilitates strategic decision-making for resource allocation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through simulations of real-world distribution network data, highlighting its ability to enhance network flexibility and improve resource utilization. Leveraging sensitivity coefficients, the algorithm enables flexible consumption and production management across various scenarios, supporting the transition to a more dynamic and efficient power system. Recently, there has been a significant increase in the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as small-scale photovoltaic systems and wind turbines in power distribution systems. When the aggregated outputs of DERs are combined, excessive reverse current may occur in distribution lines, leading to overvoltage issues and exceeding thermal limits of the distribution lines. To address these issues, it is necessary to limit the output of DERs to a certain level, which results in constraining the hosting capacity of DERs in the distribution system. In this paper, coordination control methodologies of DERs are developed and executed to mitigate the overvoltage and overcurrent induced by DERs, thereby increasing the hosting capacity for DERs of the distribution system. This paper proposes three coordinated approaches of active and reactive power control of DERs, namely Var Precedence, Watt Precedence, and Integrated Watt and Var Control. The Var and Watt Precedence prioritizes reactive power for voltage (Q–V) and active power for current (P–I) to address network congestion, thereby enhancing hosting capacity. Conversely, the Integrated Var and Watt Precedence propose a novel algorithm that combines four control indices (Q–V, P–V, Q–I, and P–I) to solve network problems while maximizing hosting capacity. The three proposed methods are based on the sensitivity analysis of voltage and current to the active and reactive power outputs at the DER installation locations on the distribution lines, aiming to minimize DER active power curtailment. Each sensitivity is derived from linearized power equations at the operating points of the distribution system. To minimize the computation burden of iterative computation, each proposed method decouples active and reactive power and proceeds with sequential control in its own unique way, iteratively determining the precise output control of distributed power sources to reduce linearization errors. The three proposed algorithms are verified via case studies, evaluating their performance compared to conventional approaches. The case studies exhibit superior control effectiveness of the proposed DER power control methods compared to conventional methods when issues such as overvoltage and overcurrent occur simultaneously in the distribution line so that the DER hosting capacity of the system can be improved. Low or even zero carbon dioxide emissions will be an essential requirement for energy supplies in the near future. Besides transport and electricity generation, industry is another large carbon emitter. Hydrogen produced by renewable energy provides a flexible way of utilizing that energy. Hydrogen, as an energy carrier, could be stored in a large capacity compared to electricity. In Sweden, hydrogen will be used to replace coal for steel production. This paper discusses how the need for electricity to produce hydrogen will affect the electricity supply and power flow in the Swedish power grid, and whether it will result in increased emissions in other regions. Data of the Swedish system will be used to study the feasibility of implementing the hydrogen system from the power system viewpoint, and discuss the electricity price and emission issues caused by the hydrogen production in different scenarios. This paper concludes that the Swedish power grid is feasible for accommodating the additional electricity capacity requirement of producing green hydrogen for the steel industry. Ever-increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the power grids, alongside their numerous benefits, brings new challenges that call for enhanced solutions in the field of control and management of power grids. The majority of the available research have considered either distribution or transmission grids in their studies. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the effects of DERs on the distribution and transmission grids is performed. The focus of this paper is on hierarchical management methods in order to categorize different approaches and highlight the gaps. Moreover, a review is conducted in the field of the newly introduced distributed energy resources management system (DERMS) concept. A DERMS can facilitate the hierarchical energy management procedure due to its functionalities and broad capabilities. Hence, its implementation in energy management and its impact on the power grid will be assessed with the aid of a co-simulation platform that considers both transmission and distribution grids. This paper presents a preliminary study of a 25 kV–50 Hz railway substation power supply system. The control of a back-to-back converter based on modular multilevel converter (MMC) technology was investigated to fit with the power quality requirements of the application. One of the main challenges is the presence of constraining load conditions, under which the train circulation variability, low-frequency harmonics and critical power transients can notably decrease the power quality and lead to instability. In order to address this, cascaded controllers based on resonant controllers are proposed to ensure the desired performance. Furthermore, balancing voltage algorithms are added to avoid stress phenomena and additional losses in the studied power conversion interface. The application of electrochemical cells as a source unit of electrical energy is rapidly growing—used in electric vehicles and other electric mobility devices, as well as in energy supply systems—as energy storage, often together with renewable energy sources. The key element of such systems is the power electronic converter used for DC energy storage and AC grid interfacing. It should be bidirectional to charge and discharge the battery when it is necessary. Two-stage battery interface converters are the most common; their DC-DC stage controls the battery current and adjusts voltage, but the DC-AC stage (inverter or frontend) controls the current in the grid. The use of unfolding inverters in two-stage battery interfaces can have some advantages. In this case, the DC-DC converter produces half-sinewave pulsating voltages and currents, but the unfolding circuit changes the polarity of the voltages and currents and produces no switching losses. Another trend of modern power electronics is the principle of partial power processing. In this case, power electronic converters deal only with a part of the total power; therefore, losses in such converters are reduced. This paper considers combining unfolding frontends with partial power DC-DC converters that enable the further reduction in losses. In this paper, it is shown that such implementation of the partial power conversion principle in semi-DC-AC systems is really possible based on the real-time matching of the voltage of the partial-power DC-DC converter, battery voltage (which depends on its state of charge) and the rectified instantaneous voltage of the AC grid. With the continuous development of large-scale wind and photovoltaic power worldwide, the net load fluctuation of systems is increasing, thereby imposing higher demands for power supply assurance and new energy consumption capacity within emerging power systems. It is imperative to establish a quantifiable and efficient model for planning new power systems, to propose an analytical approach for determining optimal evolutionary paths, and to advance research on flexible resource planning across wide areas. In this paper, based on the simplified operating characteristics of multi-type flexible resources, a source-grid-load-storage collaborative planning and evolution analysis framework is established. Secondly, the lowest total cost of the whole life cycle of the system is taken as the optimization goal, the multiple flexible resource investment decisions and production operation constraints of various flexible resources on all sides of the system are considered, and the source-grid-load-storage planning model is established. Then, through the investment decision-making strategy setting of the system in different planning level years, the evolutionary path analysis method of the whole life cycle economy and weighted environmental protection benefit of the system is given. Finally, by taking the sending-end power grid in Gansu Province as an example, a case study is carried out. Calculations of new energy, key channels within the province, energy storage capacity, and load-side response capacity requirements for 2025, 2030, and 2060 are optimized. Based on the above analysis, the optimal evolution path of the power grid is proposed. When considering the weighted benefits of economy and environmental protection, the greater the weight of environmental protection benefits, the greater the possibility of choosing a radical scheme. The modern world is moving towards a zero-emission economy; therefore, various actions are being taken to reduce the share of fossil fuels in energy production. The article examines the potential for the continued expansion of photovoltaic farms, with a special emphasis on farms utilising east–west panel orientation. The east–west orientation is an innovative solution with many advantages over the traditional north–south arrangement. The paper also makes a detailed assessment of the photovoltaic farm environment by applying two analyses based on the following factors: Political, Economic, Social, and Technological (PEST) and Demographic, Economic, Environmental, Political, Legal, Informational, Social, and Technological (DEEPLIST) factors. This is followed by an insightful, comprehensive review of the most important factors that contribute to the efficiency of photovoltaic installations, namely site conditions, existing infrastructure, and ability to connect to the electricity grid. The paper also devotes space to an analysis of daily energy price changes that affect the economic efficiency of the installation and discusses the potential for energy storage in the context of photovoltaic farms. The development of photovoltaics also requires investing in energy storage. All discussed issues fall within the scope of photovoltaic farm development and optimal use of energy resources. Increasing energy security is a crucial component of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Three main factors influence energy security: (1) the efficiency of resource use in energy production, (2) the extent of energy losses, and (3) the use of new energy sources. Novel food products can impact these factors, and this paper explores whether they are being studied in the context of reducing energy consumption. Specifically, we investigate the role of technical progress and know-how in the creation and development of novel food products and whether novel methods of food production using artificial intelligence aim to reduce energy expenditures while improving product quality, variety, and the use of new energy sources. This paper seeks to examine the impact determinants of novel foods on energy security, considering economic, technological, social, and environmental aspects of knowledge about new food. To implement the study, the relevant international literature published in the past ten years have been reviewed and methods of modeling, visualization, and descriptive statistics applied. The review is structured into three sections: the first section presents ways to save energy and other resources in the food production chain through the intensive use of artificial intelligence tools; the second section presents the development of novel food products; and the last section presents marketing challenges for novel foods. The findings show that the topic addressed by this paper is currently critical, with many authorities, research centers, food producers, and energy producers interested. However, the research problem remains open, as a systematic review of secondary sources revealed little knowledge of the topic under study, and each author's study presents a new solution. As the main source of energy supply and carbon emissions, the oil and gas industry has entered the comprehensive low-carbon transition stage driven by various factors. Since different oil companies possess distinct understandings of transition paths, the effect of low carbon transition varies greatly. Obviously, it is necessary to evaluate the performance of low-carbon transitions within the oil and gas industry. Therefore, in this paper, 10 major international oil companies are taken as examples, and a super-efficiency slack-based measurement (super-SBM) model is applied in the present study to analyze the efficiency of low-carbon transitions. Furthermore, the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) is used to decompose the driving factors of carbon emissions and analyze their impact on the low-carbon transition of international oil companies. The obtained results reveal that although major oil companies have taken different measures in low-carbon transition and achieved a year-on-year reduction in carbon emissions, from the perspective of the efficiency of the entire production and operation process, these oil companies are inefficient in carbon emissions and need to adopt more effective low-carbon transition strategies; Moreover, after the further decomposition of the carbon emission driving factors of the 10 companies, it is found that improving the energy consumption intensity and development level of oil companies can effectively improve the effect of low-carbon transition of international oil companies. Drawing on the above findings, this paper puts forward suggestions for the low-carbon transition of energy companies, thus providing theoretical support and guidance for energy companies in different countries to implement low-carbon transition and green development strategies. Energy markets are crucial for integrating Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into modern power grids. However, this integration presents challenges due to the inherent variability and decentralized nature of DERs, as well as poorly adapted regulatory environments. This paper proposes a medium-term decision-making approach based on a comprehensive suite of computational tools for integrating DERs into Colombian energy markets. The proposed framework consists of modular tools that are aligned with the operation of a Commercial Virtual Power Plant (CVPP). The tools aim to optimize participation in bilateral contracts and short-term energy markets. They use forecasting, uncertainty management, and decision-making modules to create an optimal portfolio of DER assets. The DC distribution network is a low-inertia system, which is very sensitive to load disturbance, system failure, and other factors. By adding virtual capacitance to the converter connected to the power supply, the virtual inertia of the DC power grid can be improved. Firstly, this paper proposes a strategy for adjusting virtual capacitance based on the voltage change rate to achieve adaptive control of virtual inertia, which enables the converter to quickly absorb or release energy during power fluctuations. Secondly, the adaptivity of the strategy is improved and the main control parameters in the proposed control method are qualitatively analyzed. Finally, the four-terminal photovoltaic storage DC distribution network system is constructed. Through Simulink, the adaptive virtual inertia control is incorporated on the battery side to simulate and validate the effectiveness of the strategy and the rationality of parameter analysis. With the urgent global need to limit warming to 2 °C as well as a localized need in our case study to address rising energy demand amid electrical and thermal network limitations, a critical examination of demand-side energy reductions and the concept of energy sufficiency is needed. This paper contributes to the sparse literature on bottom-up analysis by utilizing Iceland—a leader in renewable energy generation—as a case study to explore the socio-economic factors influencing energy footprints. Our findings reveal significant energy footprints across various consumption domains, particularly housing and mobility, influenced by income levels, urbanization, and lifestyle choices. The study highlights the paradox of a high renewable energy supply leading to potential misconceptions regarding abundant and low-cost energy, resulting in substantial energy consumption-related environmental impacts. Using detailed household consumption survey data, this research provides insights crucial for developing sustainable energy policies that not only target technological advancements but also address the need for a reduction in energy demand and a shift towards energy sufficiency. This work marks a contribution to the literature through the provision of a case study of low income inequality and high energy footprints in a highly renewable energy system context. Further, this work is useful for Icelandic and international policymakers to understand in such high-demand contexts which consumption domains would be most relevant for sufficiency policies. Global warming increases the risk of power outages. Mine water pumping stations pump approximately 100 million m3 of water per year (2023). The cessation of mine water pumping would expose neighboring mines and lower lying areas to flooding. The pumping stations have some containment, but a prolonged shutdown could cause environmental problems. Remediation of the resulting damage would be costly and time-consuming. The combination of the problems of dewatering abandoned mines and storing energy in the form of hydrogen to ensure continuity of power supply to pumping stations has not been the subject of extensive scientific research. The purpose of this paper was to develop options for protecting mine water pumping stations against the "blackout" phenomenon and to assess their investment relevance. Six technically feasible options for the modernization of mine water pumping stations were designed and analyzed in the study. All pumping station modernization options include storage of the generated energy in the form of green hydrogen. For Q1 2024 conditions, the option with the partial retail sale of the produced hydrogen and the increased volume of produced water for treatment is recommended for implementation. Solar energy is one type of clean energy resource, and currently the IMO, EU and UK are targeting net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This paper delves into the integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems into hybrid vessels in order to meet their strategies and targets. The technical challenges that come with designing such systems as well as their economic and environmental impacts are examined. By optimizing the usage of harnessed solar energy, we discover the operational strategy that provides maximal benefits through day-to-day savings as well as over the 25 year lifespan of solar panels. It demonstrates impressive economic viability, with cost savings of up to GBP 4.55 per day and a payoff period as short as 9 years. It also displays a modest emission reduction of up to 8.002 kg of CO2, which serves as proof for a pathway to greener practices in the maritime industry. This report highlights the operational flexibility that a hybrid vessel possesses once paired with a PV system through the ability to withstand regulatory and market changes. Microgrids (MGs) have evolved as critical components of modern energy distribution networks, providing increased dependability, efficiency, and sustainability. Effective control strategies are essential for optimizing MG operation and maintaining stability in the face of changing environmental and load conditions. Traditional rule-based control systems are extensively used due to their interpretability and simplicity. However, these strategies frequently lack the flexibility for complex and changing system dynamics. This paper provides a novel method called hybrid intelligent control for adaptive MG that integrates basic rule-based control and deep learning techniques, including gated recurrent units (GRUs), basic recurrent neural networks (RNNs), and long short-term memory (LSTM). The main target of this hybrid approach is to improve MG management performance by combining the strengths of basic rule-based systems and deep learning techniques. These deep learning techniques readily enhance and adapt control decisions based on historical data and domain-specific rules, leading to increasing system efficiency, stability, and resilience in adaptive MG. Our results show that the proposed method optimizes MG operation, especially under demanding conditions such as variable renewable energy supply and unanticipated load fluctuations. This study investigates special RNN architectures and hyperparameter optimization techniques with the aim of predicting power consumption and generation within the adaptive MG system. Our promising results show the highest-performing models indicating high accuracy and efficiency in power prediction. The finest-performing model accomplishes an R 2 value close to 1, representing a strong correlation between predicted and actual power values. As offline control photovoltaic (PV) plants are not equipped with online communication and remote control systems, they cannot adjust their power in real-time. Therefore, in a distribution network saturated with offline control PVs, the distribution system operator (DSO) should schedule the distributed energy resources (DERs) considering the uncertainty of renewable energy to prevent curtailment due to overvoltage. This paper presents a day-ahead network operation strategy using a mobile energy storage system (MESS) and offline control PVs to minimize power curtailment. The MESS model efficiently considers the transportation time and power loss of the MESS, and models various operating modes, such as the charging, discharging, idle, and moving modes. The optimization problem is formulated based on mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) considering the spatial and temporal operation constraints of MESSs and is performed using chanced constrained optimal power flow (CC-OPF). The upper limits for offline control PVs are set based on the probabilistic approach, thus mitigating overvoltage due to forecasting errors. The proposed operation strategy was tested in the IEEE 33-node distribution system coupled with a 15-node transportation system. A reasonable allocation of production schedules and savings in overall electricity costs are crucial for large manufacturing conglomerates. In this study, we develop an optimization model of off-site industrial production scheduling to address the problems of high electricity costs due to the irrational allocation of production schedules on the demand side of China's power supply, and the difficulty in promoting industrial and commercial distributed photovoltaic (PV) projects in China. The model makes full use of the conditions of different PV resources and variations in electricity prices in different places to optimize the scheduling of industrial production in various locations. The model is embedded with two sub-models, i.e., an electricity price prediction model and a distributed photovoltaic power cost model to complete the model parameters, in which the electricity price prediction model utilizes a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network. Then, the particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to solve the optimization model. Finally, the production data of two off-site pharmaceutical factories belonging to the same large group of enterprises are substituted into the model for example analysis, and it is concluded that the optimization model can significantly reduce the electricity consumption costs of the enterprises by about 7.9%. Natural gas hydrate (NGH) is a potential future energy resource. More than 90% of NGH resources exist in the pore medium of seafloor sediments. During the development of deep-sea oil and gas fields, wellbore pipelines are often clogged due to the synthesis of gas hydrates, and the addition of thermodynamic inhibitors is a common solution to prevent hydrate synthesis. In this paper, the effects of two single inhibitors, sodium chloride and ethylene glycol, as well as hybrid inhibitors combining these two inhibitors on the synthesis of methane hydrates were investigated using the self-developed one-dimensional gas hydrate exploitation simulation test apparatus. The effects of single and hybrid inhibitors were investigated in terms of the hydrate synthesis volume and gas–water two-phase conversion rate. The results show that the hybrid inhibitor has a better inhibitory effect on hydrate synthesis with the same initial synthesis driving force. When the concentration of inhibitors is low, salt inhibitors can have a better inhibitory effect than alcohol inhibitors. However, in the mixed inhibitor experiment, increasing the proportion of ethylene glycol in the mixed inhibitor can more effectively inhibit the synthesis of hydrates than increasing the proportion of sodium chloride in the mixed inhibitor. The use of renewable energy sources to achieve carbon neutrality is increasing. However, the uncertainty and volatility of renewable resources are causing problems in power systems. Flexible and low-carbon resources such as Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) are essential for solving the problems of power systems and achieving greenhouse gas reduction goals. However, ESSs are not being installed because of Korea's fuel-based electricity market. To address this issue, this paper presents a method for determining the optimal investment timing of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) using the Least Squares Monte Carlo (LSMC) method. A case study is conducted considering the System Marginal Price (SMP) and Capacity Payment (CP), which are electricity rates in Korea. Revenue is calculated through the arbitrage of a 10 MW/40 MWh lithium-ion BESS, and linear programming optimization is performed for ESS scheduling to maximize revenue. The ESS revenue with uncertainty is modeled as a stochastic process using Geometric Brownian Motion (GBM), and the optimal time to invest in an ESS is determined using an LSMC simulation considering investment costs. Active Distribution Networks are Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) systems with coupled dynamics, which cause interactions among the control loops of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). This undesired effect leads to performance degradation of voltage control. To mitigate the effects of this unavoidable coupling, the present paper proposes a systematic design procedure based on the analysis of the interaction's sources. In detail, each DER is equipped with a double-loop PI to control the active and reactive power output of the voltage source converter, which connects the DER to the network's node. Furthermore, to guarantee ancillary services, the two loops are coupled by a simple mechanism of cooperation of the active power to voltage regulation realized by a filtered droop law. To achieve voltage regulation with reduced loop interactions, the PI parameters and the filter's pulse are designed according to a procedure with two sequential steps based on the Internal Model Control (IMC) technique. Simulation studies are finally presented to demonstrate that the proposed design method achieves both reduction of the loop interaction and robust voltage control in the presence of model parameter uncertainty in the MIMO plant, modeling various operating conditions of the ADN, including a step connection of large loads, renewable energy source variations, and changes in the substation transformer ratio. In this paper, a two-leg-transfer switch structure method that can continuously supply three-phase power even when an accident occurs in a power semiconductor of a three-level active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter for railway vehicles is presented. The proposed method can minimize the ripple effect caused by power semiconductor faults by separating the faulty leg from the main circuit and connecting the load-side circuit to a neutral point. As a result of simulations, the average values of MAE and RMSE can be reduced by 1.53 [A] and 1.77 [A], respectively, when using the proposed leg-transfer switch structure compared to using the conventional structure. In the IGBT failure experiment, when the proposed method was applied to a three-level ANPC inverter, there was only a 0.21 [%] difference from the THD under normal conditions. As a result, the magnitude, phase, and total harmonic distortion of the three-phase current waveforms measured before and after the fault were identical. Thus, normal three-phase power could be effectively supplied to the load when the proposed leg-transfer switch method was applied after a power semiconductor fault occurred in the three-level ANPC inverter. If this leg-transfer switch method is applied in three-level ANPC inverterd for railway vehicles, track schedule errors can be minimized by continuously supplying three-phase power to the electric motor even when an accident occurs in a power semiconductor. A grid blackout is an intractable problem with serious economic consequences in many developing countries. Although it has been proven that microgrids (MGs) are capable of solving this problem, the uncertainties regarding when and for how long blackouts occur lead to extreme difficulties in the design and operation of the related MGs. This paper addresses the optimal design problem of the MGs considering the uncertainties of the blackout starting time and duration utilizing the kernel density estimator method. Additionally, uncertainties in solar irradiance and ambient temperature are also considered. For that, chance-constrained optimization is employed to design residential and industrial PV-based MGs. The proposed approach aims to minimize the expected value of the levelized cost of energy ( L C O E ), where the restriction of the annual total loss of power supply ( T L P S ) is addressed as a chance constraint. The results show that blackout uncertainties have a considerable effect on calculating the size of the MG's components, especially the battery bank size. Frequency response performance in power systems is becoming vulnerable due to the transition toward the higher penetration of renewable energy such as achieving carbon neutrality. In particular, reducing power system inertia energy as the asynchronous generation increases could result in violating the frequency stability constraint when a disturbance occurs in the power systems. In order to control the rapidly fluctuating frequency of the power system with low inertia, it is necessary to introduce fast frequency response resources such as a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This paper proposes a method to calculate the required capacity of BESS for compensating the frequency control performance of the power system using inertia energy. For calculating the required capacity of BESS, the inertia energy in the critical power system, where frequency control performance marginally satisfies frequency stability constraint, should be calculated. Also, the inertia energy in the evaluated power system having deficit inertia energy should be calculated. By comparing power systems that respond with different dynamics when the same disturbance occurs, the proposed calculation corresponds to the ratio of inertia energy deficiency based on critical power system inertia energy within the power imbalance. Through various case studies employing Korean power systems, the effectiveness of the inertia energy-based calculation method for the required BESS is verified by the fact that the BESS integrated power system marginally satisfies the frequency stability constraint. In these study cases, it is found that the instant response of BESS is very effective for compensating the frequency control performance of the low inertia power system. With the large-scale use of wind turbines, the ability of the power system to resist frequency fluctuations has been greatly weakened, making the contradiction between frequency regulation supply and demand in the power system increasingly prominent. In order to ensure the frequency security of the power system, this paper conducts research on the primary frequency regulation (PR) backup configuration problem of a power system containing a high proportion of wind power. First, according to the dynamic properties of the speed regulator, a system frequency response model considering the limiting link is established. And the system frequency response model is transformed into a time-domain analytical function of PR reserve capacity and frequency maximum value. On this basis, a PR backup configuration model of a power system containing a high proportion of wind power is constructed with the optimization goal of minimizing system operating costs and taking into account the limiting link constraints. It is proposed to use the L-shape algorithm to decompose the model into main problems and sub-problems, which effectively reduces the solution complexity of the model. Geothermal energy exploration, development, and research have been ongoing in Canada for several decades. The country's cold climate and the push to develop renewable energy sources have driven interest in geothermal energy. Despite this drive, regulatory complexities and competition with other relatively inexpensive energy sources with existing infrastructure have hindered development. As such, interest has grown and waned with changes in the energy economy over several decades, leaving many projects at a standstill. As of January 2023, there are currently no operational geothermal power projects in Canada. Many hot spring pool and spa complexes remain active, and Canada is a leading country in the installation of ground source heat pumps (GSHPs; also called geo-exchange systems). However, in the last decade, the interest in deep geothermal systems has renewed, with many new projects starting up across several provinces and territories. Moreover, projects that had shown limited progress for many years—such as Mount Meager in British Columbia—have begun to renew their development efforts. Research is also expanding within prominent research groups and universities. The areas of focus include both building upon previous studies (such as thermal gradients and the heat flow in sedimentary basins) and researching new methods and resources (such as GSHPs, closed-loop systems, integrated geothermal operations, and hybrid systems, including heat storage). The development is supported by federal, provincial, and territorial governments through grants and the development of regulatory frameworks. Although challenges still remain for Canada to develop its geothermal energy resources, several power, thermal, and co-production projects, ongoing research, funding, and regulatory acts are all moving forward to support geothermal development. In order to achieve the flexible and efficient utilization of distributed energy resources, microgrids (MGs) can enhance the self-healing capability of distribution systems. Conventional primary droop control in microgrids exhibits deviations in voltage and frequency and lacks research on voltage–frequency control during network reconfiguration. Therefore, this paper investigates the control strategy of secondary control for voltage and frequency during the process of reconstructing distribution networks to operate in the form of microgrids after faults. Firstly, the mathematical model of three-phase voltage-source inverters with droop control is analyzed. Then, inspired by the generator's secondary frequency control strategy, an improved secondary control method based on droop control is proposed, and the effectiveness of the improved droop control strategy is verified. Finally, simulation examples of distribution networks with various dynamic boundary topology changes are designed to simulate a relatively stable control result, validating the proposed strategy. The basic requirements for the design of a switchgear for main 35–220 kV step-down substations are reliability and efficiency. Switchgear circuits are chosen depending on the number of supply and transit lines and transformers, the substation's place in the power supply system, and the area that can be allocated under the substation construction. The substation switchgear's reliability depends on the circuit type and the equipment to be installed. When designing, as a rule, standard substation switchgear circuit solutions are chosen with often unreasonably overstated reliability indicators and, as a consequence, capital costs. This paper explores the issues of automated choice of the best option for the 35–220 kV substation switchgear circuit, considering its structural reliability and additional costs for the area allocated under the electrical unit. A distinctive feature of the work is a comprehensive accounting of the reliability indicators of the substation and the influence of the layout of switchgear circuits as a whole on the performance indicators of future electrical installations. The developed technique is used at the pre-design stages and allows for reducing further capital, maintenance, and repair costs for electrical units by up to 14.5%. Integration of inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs) is reshaping the landscape of distribution grids to fulfill the socioeconomic, environmental, and sustainability goals. Addressing the technological challenges of DER grid integration requires an adaptive communication layer for efficient DER management and control. This transition has given rise to a cyberphysical system (CPS) architecture within the distribution system, causing new vulnerabilities for cyberphysical attacks. To better address potential threats, this paper presents a comprehensive risk assessment framework for cyberphysical security in distribution grids with grid-edge DERs. The framework incorporates a detailed CPS model accounting for dynamic DER characteristics within the distribution grid. It identifies vulnerabilities in DER communication systems, models attack scenarios, and addresses communication latency crucial for inverter control timescales. Subsequently, the quantification of attack impacts employs an attack probability model including both the vulnerability and criticality of cyber components. PV power generation is developing fast in both centralized and distributed forms under the background of constructing a new power system with high penetration of renewable sources. However, the control performance and stability of the PV system is seriously affected by the interaction between PV internal control loops and the external power grid. The impact of the PV system on the reliability, stability, and power quality of power systems has restricted them to further participate in power supplies with a large capacity. Traditional control methods have become ineffective at dealing with these problems as the PV system becomes increasingly complex and nonlinear. Intelligent control as a more advanced technology has been integrated into the PV system to improve system control performance and stability. However, intelligent control for the PV system is still in the early stages due to the extensive calculation and intricate implementation of intelligent algorithms. The energy transition introduces new technical standards, laws and regulations regarding the stability and reliability of energy grids and systems. Due to the non-existence of a measuring standard, key performance indicators (KPIs) were developed to enable the measurement and comparison of individual energy grid (namely electricity, heat and gas grid) and system supportabilities while also promoting well-founded decision-making and optimization efforts. Inconsistencies in definitions concerning fundamental energy terms and the correlations between them inhibit the effective usage of the KPIs. Therefore, the overarching issue of the security of energy supply and its related subjects were also approached. The primary subject of this paper is the development of two new KPIs to measure and compare the energy grid and system supportability. These KPIs are based on spatio-temporal conditions in their respective grids. The usage and benefits of the developed KPIs are exemplarily highlighted by analyzing the impact of a scenario with the integration of a large-scale heat pump into the electricity and heat grid. The energy grid supportability is determined for each grid, whereas the energy system supportability takes the interactions of the electricity and heat grid into account. The developed KPIs are intended to enable stakeholders to identify areas with optimization potential in energy grids and systems. The synthesis of methane from hydrogen and carbon dioxide creates an energy resource that is suitable for long-term storage. Once this process is powered by renewable electricity, it produces a clean fuel for producing electricity and heat and supports large-scale renewable energy deployment, energy transition and climate change mitigation. This paper proposes a pragmatic approach to assessing the economic potential of synthetic methane-based power. Today, natural gas plays an important role in the Baltic region due to the existing infrastructure, which includes a transmission and distribution pipeline network, gas power plants and a large underground storage reservoir. Replacing natural gas with synthetic methane would fulfil carbon emission reduction ambitions. In this paper, we simulate electricity producers' actions at market conditions and consider the generation portfolio in the Baltics and the interconnections with Scandinavia and Poland operating in the NORDPOOL electricity market. As a result of these calculations, we obtain the volume of the synthetic gas, the production costs, the volume of gas storage, the installed capacity of the gas power plant, and the investments required to ensure energy transition and system adequacy. Recently, the generalization of P2P (peer-to-peer) technology with enhanced security due to blockchain technology and the expansion of renewable energy-based distributed energy resources have led to blockchain technology being applied in power transactions, thus giving the potential to become a new platform for DC microgrid operation. Meanwhile, the voltage of a DC microgrid represents the balance of energy supply and demand and also serves as a stability index. The balance is represented as a steady state; the stability is represented during and after events. This paper examines the stability of the DC microgrid built on a university campus in Korea and, in particular, the blockchain technology-based power transactions performed in the DC microgrid. The test is based on the pre-planned transaction schedule applied in the DC microgrid. The transaction schedule has used day-ahead and real-time bidding data. Although many technologies are included in the project, this paper focuses on the voltage stability of the DC microgrid. In addition, the DC protection is applied and evaluated. To consider general DC protection, the DC breaker was simplified with several IGBTs, diodes, capacitors, and arrestors and was designed to interrupt the fault current within five milliseconds. This paper takes a cursory look at the problem of inadequate power supply in the rural healthcare centres of a developing country, specifically Nigeria, and proffers strategies to address this issue through the design of hybrid renewable energy systems combined with the existing unreliable grid in order to meet the healthcare load demand, thus ensuring higher reliability of available energy sources. The simulations, analysis and results presented in this paper are based on meteorological data and the load profiles of six selected locations in Nigeria, using which hybrid grid-connected systems integrating diesel, solar and wind energy sources are designed with configurations to give optimum output. The optimised design configurations in the considered case study, Ejioku, Okuru-Ama, Damare-Polo, Agbalaenyi, Kadassaka and Doso, produce very low energy costs of of 0.0791 $/kWh, 0.115 $/kWh, 0.0874 $/kWh, 0.0754 $/kWh, 0.0667 $/kWh and 0.0588 $/kWh, respectively, leveraging solar and wind energy sources which make higher percentage contributions at all sites. The load-following-dispatch strategy is adopted at all sites, ensuring that at every point in time, there is sufficient power to meet the needs of the healthcare centres. This paper examines normality in time series econometrics for a sustainable energy transition. By analysing data from January 1997 to December 2021, this study integrates macroeconomic, environmental, and energy data to gain insights into the potential changes in daily commuting patterns among Slovenians. Various methods, including unit root tests such as the augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF), Kwiatkowski–Phillips–Schmidt–Shin (KPSS), and Zivot–Andrews (Z-A), as well as other tests, are employed. Additionally, the vector autoregressive (VAR) model, Granger Causality and regression analysis determine the impact. This paper contributes to uncovering valuable information within data from macrovariables using macroeconometric techniques. It also provides insights that can support evidence-based decision-making for sustainable energy transition policies in Slovenia. The results of the normality tests indicate that most macro variables are integrated; there is a need for a careful analysis of integration levels and appropriate testing methods. These findings have implications for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners in economics, the environment, and energy supply. At the same time, this research highlights that gross domestic product, unemployment, inflation, and carbon dioxide positively impact car usage among Slovenians, while gasoline prices and commuters have a negative one. While the recently investigated development of sustainable commuting does not work, the study highlights an innovation: the connection of time series econometrics, which offers a better understanding of future commuting patterns on energy consumption and their causalities. At present, electrified railroads with complex road conditions are facing the problems of the existence of a single power supply method, the deterioration in power quality, and the difficulty in recycling regenerative braking energy. In order to improve the above problems, this paper establishes a traction power supply system containing photovoltaic units, proposes an optimized compensation model for the RPC (railroad power conditioner), and improves the particle swarm algorithm for solving the reference value of RPC compensation power. First, the structure of the RPC-based traction photovoltaic power generation system and the establishment of the integrated energy management strategy of the system are constructed. Then, the back-to-back converter compensation model with power quality index parameter constraints is established, which establishes the optimization function with the objectives of minimizing the negative sequence current, maximizing the power factor, and minimizing the RPC compensation power, as well as establishes constraints on the active converter capacity and three-phase voltage imbalance. Then, the particle swarm algorithm for solving the RPC compensation power reference value is improved, specifically in the original PSO by introducing dynamically changing inertia weights and learning factors. This not only solves the problem of the single power supply and realizes the nearby consumption of photovoltaic units in the traction system, but also realizes the recycling of regenerative braking energy and the coordinated control of the traction photovoltaic power generation system, improves the power quality of the system, and meets the demand of the RPC for real-time control. In order to verify the effectiveness of the optimized compensation model established in this paper and improve the convergence of the particle swarm algorithm for solving the RPC compensation power reference value, a simulation model of the traction PV power generation system is established in MATLAB/Simulink, and a real-time simulation is carried out to verify it based on the preset working condition data. The results show that the RPC optimization compensation model developed in this paper can coordinate the control system energy flow and improve the system power quality (the power factor increases and the negative sequence current decreases). This paper presents a new control method for a bidirectional DC–DC LLC resonant topology converter. The proposed converter can be applied to power the conversion between an energy storage system and a DC bus in a DC microgrid or bidirectional power flow conversion between vehicle-to-grid (V2G) behavior and grid-to-vehicle (G2V) behavior. Furthermore, such a converter can be applied to energy storage systems for decentralized renewable energy generation systems, such as solar and wind power. In addition, this converter can be combined with a bidirectional inverter to allow energy storage in the system to improve the safety, stability, and power quality of the microgrid. In the proposed circuit structure, we use a bidirectional DC–DC LLC, which has the advantages of a higher voltage conversion ratio, lower part count, simpler control than similar converters such as DAB, CLLC, and L–LLC converters, and bidirectional power flow and electrical isolation. Specifically, to extend the battery life, it can be employed as a control strategy for discharging the energy stored in the battery (SOC) and reducing the temperature rise generated by the internal solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) when discharging the battery under the variation in distributed energy resource (DER) generation and load demand. To realize the bidirectional power conversion without using any auxiliary inductor and only changing the control strategy, the forward step-down power conversion was based on pulse frequency modulation (PFM) control, and the reverse step-up power conversion was based on pulse width modulation (PWM) control. In this paper, we introduce the bidirectional converter topology and its control strategy for the DC microgrid battery energy storage system. The demand for the power grid system's capacity to undergo peak-shaving is increasing as the proportion of renewable energy rises. In China, nuclear power units usually only provide a base load operation in the view of safety and economic considerations, but they do not provide load adjustment services, which undoubtedly increases the pressure of grid load adjustment. In this paper, a novel flexibility load adjustment strategy of the CHP nuclear unit is studied, which is achieved by introducing the thermal storage tank (TST) into the Rankine cycle without changing the output of the nuclear reactor. The AP1000 pressurized water reactor nuclear power unit for combined heat and power is taken as an example, and the thermodynamic model is established through the water vapor equation. Furthermore, the reference system is simulated for the goal of minimizing the imbalance between power supply and demand, and the flexibility–environment–economy benefits are evaluated. The results show that the heat storage/release of the TST may achieve power output flexible adjustment of the nuclear unit, and the power imbalance of the reference energy system is reduced from 1107.99 MWh to 457.24 MWh, a reduction of 58.73%. The introduction of a 600 MWh TST can enable the reference unit to contribute 335 MWh of peak electricity within the reference day. From the perspective of replacing the power generation output increment of coal-fired power units with equal amounts, it can achieve a reduction of 106.09 tons of coal consumption in the case day, which means that 277.73 tons of CO2 emissions can be reduced. The efficient integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in buildings is a challenge that can be addressed through the deployment of multienergy microgrids (MGs). In this context, the Interreg SUDOE project IMPROVEMENT was launched at the end of the year 2019 with the aim of developing efficient solutions allowing public buildings with critical loads to be turned into net-zero-energy buildings (nZEBs). The work presented in this paper deals with the development of a predictive energy management system (PEMS) for the management of thermal resources and users' thermal comfort in public buildings. Optimization-based/optimization-free model predictive control (MPC) algorithms are presented and validated in simulations using data collected in a public building equipped with a multienergy MG. Models of the thermal MG components were developed. The strategy currently used in the building relies on proportional–integral–derivative (PID) and rule-based (RB) controllers. The interconnection between the thermal part and the electrical part of the building-integrated MG is managed by taking advantage of the solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation surplus. The optimization-based MPC EMS has the best performance but is rather computationally expensive. The green transition is a challenge for the Polish economy and energy sector. In this paper, the expert method of analysis was applied and findings revealed that the challenges and prerequisites for an effective transformation of the power sector mainly include technical, technological and organizational issues of energy production and use. The provision of electricity at competitive prices and with a low carbon footprint, for individual consumers and industry, is a prerequisite for maintaining the well-being of the population and ensuring the competitiveness of domestically produced goods. The ambitious climate policy goals of the European Union require immediate action and call for radical changes in the Polish energy sector; in the coming years, it must drastically reduce the amount of energy produced from fossil fuels and replace it with so-called green energy from renewable sources. The main purpose of this article was to highlight the need to modify Poland's energy policy until 2040 in order to make it more consistent with the ambitious climate goals of the European Union. This article also shows that Poland's energy transition must include a shift from fossil fuels to renewables, while ensuring that energy security is stabilized by the current energy and generation resources. Energy transition towards a local resilient energy supply is necessary for energy security. Climate change and the threat of economic collapse are reasons to force society to become less dependent on fossil fuel. Small-scale solutions are expected to be more sustainable, as large-scale integrated networks are featured by complexity and difficult-to-notice vulnerabilities, creating system risks. This paper presents the results of empirical research among a sample of Polish business students (N = 205) on the importance of worldviews for the choice of the energy transition scenario (local solutions vs. large-scale solutions). Worldviews are represented here by the Dominant Social Paradigm (defined for the purpose of this study as the belief that liberal democracy, free markets, and technological development are to solve all type of problems). This study addresses two research questions: (1) Is there a difference in preference for the energy transition scenarios? (2) Does adherence to the Dominant Social Paradigm determine the choice of the scenario for energy transition? The results present a preference for non-cooperative solutions (individual household solutions and large-scale solutions), while no significant relation to the worldviews represented by the Dominant Social Paradigm has been found. The results suggest that preferences for individual and large-scale solutions may be influenced more by institutional factors than by personal worldviews. A policy implication is that a change in the socio-political institutions and strengthening local governance may be a prerequisite for a sustainable energy transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a practical framework for developing a net-zero electricity mix scenario (NEMS), which considers detailed conditions for supply of each energy. NEMS means a path scenario for power generation amount by year of each generation resource required to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050. NEMS framework refers to a methodological framework that contains procedures and requirements to continuously update the NEMS by comprehensively reflecting policy changes. For evaluation of NEMS, indicators such as a system inertia resource ratio (SIRR) and a fuel conversion rate (FCR) are proposed. The proposed framework and indicators are applied for the 2050 NEMS in Korea's electricity sector. The SIRR, indicating the ratio of inertial resources to total resources, projects values of 49% and 15% for the years 2030 and 2050, respectively. Furthermore, the FCR, reflecting the ratio of fuel conversion for resources undergoing this process, predicts that all targeted resources will have completed conversion by the year 2043. In the light of increasingly valuable resources and a trend towards more efficient processes pushed by climate change, distributed Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) is an important element in the transformation of the energy supply. In recent years, however, WHR systems have often been optimized and implemented for steady-state applications. In this paper, dynamic system modeling and a Steam Rankine Cycle (SRC) pilot plant with 40 kWel are used to investigate applications unutilized thus far for the conversion of high-temperature waste heat into electricity using a shell boiler with 1.27 m3 of liquid water for short-term energy storage. In addition to experimental investigations of the storage system as an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and the input and output of +/−100% electrical power peaks for grid-assistive operation, a control concept for the use of volatile waste heat is developed from a model-based controller design up to a Model Predictive Control (MPC) with the help of a dynamic system simulation. This paper focuses on analyzing asymmetric and open-phase fault modes in symmetrical two-channel six-phase induction machines while considering the spatial harmonics of the electromagnetic field in the air gap. Under sinusoidal power supply, the magnetomotive force exhibits high-order spatial harmonics, which arise due to the winding design. The interaction between these spatial harmonics and the first-time harmonic of the power supply results in the presence of high-order harmonics in the current and electromagnetic torque. The harmonic content of the currents and torque under asymmetric and open-phase operation mode while taking into account spatial harmonics is analyzed. It is shown that in asymmetrical modes, in addition to the 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th higher harmonics found in symmetrical modes, harmonics in multiples of the 3rd are introduced into the stator winding currents. As for the composition of the electromagnetic torque in asymmetrical modes, all even harmonics are present, in addition to the 6th and 12th harmonics that are characteristic of symmetrical modes. A mathematical model of the six-phase induction machine has been developed using the average voltages within the integration step method. Distributed energy resources have demonstrated their potential to mitigate the limitations of large, centralized generation systems. This is achieved through the geographical distribution of generation sources that capitalize on the potential of their respective environments to satisfy local demand. In a microgrid, the control problem is inherently distributed, rendering traditional control techniques inefficient due to the impracticality of central governance. Instead, coordination among its components is essential. The challenge involves enabling these components to operate under optimal conditions, such as charging batteries with surplus solar energy or deactivating controllable loads when market prices rise. Consequently, there is a pressing need for innovative distributed strategies like emergent control. Inspired by phenomena such as the environmentally responsive behavior of ants, emergent control involves decentralized coordination schemes. This paper introduces an emergent control strategy for microgrids, grounded in the response threshold model, to establish an autonomous distributed control approach. The results, utilizing our methodology, demonstrate seamless coordination among the diverse components of a microgrid. For instance, system resilience is evident in scenarios where, upon the failure of certain components, others commence operation. Moreover, in dynamic conditions, such as varying weather and economic factors, the microgrid adeptly adapts to meet demand fluctuations. Our emergent control scheme enhances response times, performance, and on/off delay times. In various test scenarios, Integrated Absolute Error (IAE) metrics of approximately 0.01% were achieved, indicating a negligible difference between supplied and demanded energy. Furthermore, our approach prioritizes the utilization of renewable sources, increasing their usage from 59.7% to 86.1%. Reducing the heat demand of existing buildings is an essential prerequisite for achieving a greenhouse gas-neutral energy supply. Numerous studies and open-source tools deal with heat demand mapping. It is not uncommon that estimated heat demands deviate from real heat consumption, so existing approaches should be improved by including in-depth building information. Some tools have recognised this problem and offer built-in functions for factoring various parameters into their assessments. Nevertheless, the necessary information is usually missing and should be obtained first. In this paper, we analyse the impact of thermal refurbishment and climate on building heat demand; hence, generate public datasets with corresponding key figures for each building type in different efficiency states and years. Accounting for already performed refurbishments in methodologies for assessing the actual state heat demand for cities will result in a reduction of at least 8% up to more than 21%, depending on whether conventional or passive house components were installed. As a result of climatic differences within Germany, a building's heat demand can be up to 39% higher or up to 21% lower than the heat demand of an identical building in the reference climate of Germany. By further developing the approaches of the tools Hotmaps and Heat Cadastre Hamburg, we could improve the estimated heat demand of Hamburg to a value approximating the real consumption.
