Spatial predictions of wildfire spread are used operationally and in risk estimation. It is important that their outputs are validated to quantify predictive performance and uncertainty. There are numerous loss functions for this simulation validation. Our paper synthesises ten common and five novel loss functions for evaluating the performance of wildfire predictions against observed or simulated wildfires. We describe each loss function; test their sensitivity to scale, rotation and translation; and demonstrate their application with three case study wildfires in south-eastern Australia. Based on their purpose, there are three categories of loss functions: general overlap, partial overlap and distance. Within these categories, there is functional redundancy as many loss functions are appropriate and perform similarly. Using loss functions from across the three different categories is the most comprehensive for evaluating wildfire models, but the choice depends on the simulation purpose and interpretation. • Spatial predictions of wildfire spread are frequently used but not always evaluated. • We synthesised fifteen loss functions for evaluating predicted vs observed wildfire spread. • There is not a 'best' loss function, it depends on simulation use and interpretation. Accurately predicting estuaries water quality is essential to support immediate intervention to water quality problem management. Deep learning is used to improve forecasting of water quality parameters in many aquatic systems. However, it is frequently constrained by low data frequency and quality. High-frequency, continuous monitoring using integrated in-situ water quality and environmental sensors can be an input to deep learning models resulting in highly accurate water quality and environmental predictions. This paper proposes a novel approach to improve forecasting of water quality and environmental variables. The results of the real-world data from the Swan Canning Estuary sites show how well the suggested model works. With different sizes of training and testing sets, the model can still predict the increased number of hours in high scores. Under the trend of the global green and low-carbon transformation, accurate prediction of electric load is an urgent problem for all countries to maintain the normal operation of production and living activities. Currently, a large number of models based on single-point forecasting of electric load have emerged. However, these models are limited by the high randomness of electric load data, which restricts the further improvement of prediction accuracy. To fill this gap, a CElif (Combined Electric Load Interval Forecasting) system is proposed in this paper, which contains decomposition and denoising module, individual forecasting module, optimization module and evaluation module, aiming to tolerate uncertainty to provide policymakers with more information. Decomposition and denoising strategy is adopted to extract and reconstruct the inherent modes of the original sequence. In order to verify the superiority of the CElif system, the electric load data of 30-minute interval in Australia are used to test. The numerical results conclude the CElif system not only has excellent coverage performance in electric load interval prediction, controls the uncertainty to a great extent, but also provides a basis for power system dispatching management. • A novel integrated short-term power load forecasting system is proposed. • The fuzzy granulation technique simplifies the large-scale dataset and extracts the effective characteristics of the raw data. • A novel multi-objective variant of the tuna swarm optimizer is utilized to integrate multiple forecasting sequences. • The optimal weight coefficients of the ensemble model are theoretically demonstrated to be the Pareto optimal solutions. • Our proposed forecasting system can gauge the uncertainty of future electricity load. As an irreplaceable power source, electricity is responsible for sustaining the national economy and social development, and the precondition for the power system's stable operation is to perform an accurate short-term load forecast (STLF). However, with the increasing forms of social power consumption and the emergence of large-scale sustainable resources on the grid, which make STLF increasingly challenging as the power load exhibits greater stochasticity and instability. Therefore, a novel STLF system is developed in this paper, which incorporates data fuzzy granulation, a high-performance optimizer for integrating forecasting sequences, point and interval forecasts. Moreover, the performance tests of the optimization algorithm verify that our proposed optimizer can obtain more approximate solution sets to the real Pareto front and outshines the traditional optimization algorithm concerning convergence and diversity. Load data from three regions of Australia demonstrate that our developed system can remarkably contribute to the accuracy and stability of the STLF , and also quantify the volatility and uncertainty of the power load, which allows power workers to better capture the fluctuation interval of future loads and effectively enhance the flexibility of grid operation. More timely and accurate air quality forecasting could contribute to better public health protection and air pollution prevention. Particulates are a significant indicator for measuring the degree of air pollution. This paper reports on research to model an early warning tool for coarse particulates when assessing the impact of the 12 satellite-derived and ground-based meteorological pollutants out of 30 pollutants considered using hourly Australian data from January 2018–December 2020. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) was integrated with a one-directional fully gated recurrent unit (GRU) to forecast consecutive hours' air quality. The CNN model acts as a spatial feature extractor, whereas the new generation GRU makes it computationally efficient. The resultant hybrid ' CNN-GRU' is then comprehensively benchmarked outperforming an ensemble of six other deep learning models. The proposed model's efficacy is indicated at the four most air polluted Australian postcodes in the testing phase. A detailed error analysis with visual and statistical metrics for air quality forecasting ascertains the proposed model's countermeasure to reduce harm and loss. The practical tool is immensely beneficial and can be widely deployed to the regions of public health concern where air pollution is a significant hazard. • A novel CTSGAN deep learning framework is first proposed and applied to model day-ahead electricity price scenarios. • The CTSGAN point forecasting model can eventually be transformed into a probabilistic forecasting model by enhancing the diversity of random input. • The CTSGAN probabilistic forecasting model can directly yield high-quality forecasting intervals with different coverage probabilities as a multi-objective forecasting model. • PSO-based optimal conditions selection method can increase the forecasting accuracy. Electricity prices in spot markets are volatile and can be affected by various factors, such as generation and demand, system contingencies, local weather patterns, bidding strategies of market participants, and uncertain renewable energy outputs. Because of these factors, electricity price forecasting is challenging. This paper proposes a scenario modeling approach to improve forecasting accuracy, conditioning time series generative adversarial networks on external factors. After data pre-processing and condition selection, a conditional TSGAN or CTSGAN is designed to forecast electricity prices. Wasserstein Distance, weights limitation, and RMSProp optimizer are used to ensure that the CTGAN training process is stable. By changing the dimensionality of random noise input, the point forecasting model can be transformed into a probabilistic forecasting model. For electricity price point forecasting, the proposed CTSGAN model has better accuracy and has better generalization ability than the TSGAN and other deep learning methods. For probabilistic forecasting, the proposed CTSGAN model can significantly improve the continuously ranked probability score and Winkler score. • A hybrid short-term load forecasting method is proposed. • A data preprocessing module is conducted based on de-noising technique and fuzzy time series. • To balance the forecasting accuracy and stability, a multi-objective optimization algorithm is applied to optimize the BPNN model. Countries around the globe have introduced renewable energies (RE) and minimized the dependency of fossil resources in power systems to address extensive environmental risks. However, such large-scale energy transitions pose a great challenge to power systems due to the volatility of RE. Meanwhile, power demand is increasing over time and it shows temporal characteristics, such as seasonal and peak-valley patterns. Whether the future power system with a larger proportion of RE can meet the surging but fluctuated electricity demand remains problematic. Previous studies on short-term load forecasting focused more on forecasting accuracy than stability. Further, there is a relative paucity of research into temporal patterns. In order to fill in these research gaps, this paper proposes a fuzzy theory-based machine learning model for workdays and weekends short-term load forecasting. Fuzzy time series (FTS) is applied for data mining and back propagation (BP) neural network is used as the main predictor for short-term load forecasting. To exploit the trade-offs between forecasting stability and accuracy, multi-objective optimization is applied to modify the parameters of BP. Moreover, an interval forecasting architecture with several statistical tests is constructed to address forecasting uncertainties. Short-term load data from Victoria in Australia is selected as a case study. Results demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly boost forecasting stability and accuracy, and help strategy making in the field of energy and electricity system management and planning.
