1. Bilingual Education. Papers Presented at the Language Teaching Conference (3rd, La Trobe University, May 3-4, 1974).

Abstract

The conference was held to alert teachers and other interested persons to the complexities of linguistic diversity in Australia, with attention focused on the immigrant child. This report includes the individual conference papers, presented by Marta Rado, Bert Townsend, Michael Clyne, Alan Matheson, and Rede Lar, and the comments of symposium and forum participants. The implications of bilingualism and biculturalism are analyzed from the standpoint of language development, language contact, social integration, social mobility, and communication interference. Principals and teachers elaborate on the practical problems encountered in schools with a high degree of immigrant intake. The Multilingual Project, a form of bilingual education developed at La Trobe University, is discussed by school staff who had direct experience with the materials, and its theoretical foundations are described. English-speaking teachers can participate in this program with the help of bilingual pupils, parents, or other assistants. Materials are student-centered, with emphasis on conceptual development. Learners may study in the language of their preference. Project materials are produced in parallel forms of English and immigrant languages, and the units are suitable for independent or small group study. (Author/CLK)

2. Symposium on Southeast Asian Library Resources. Papers and Proceedings.

Abstract

These are published presentations of the symposium in Canberra, Australia. The first major paper is a survey of Southeast Asian Studies in Australia since 1945. Other papers include: a review of progress of the Australian Advisory Council on Bibliographic Services survey of Southeast Asian resources in Australian libraries; current and future Southeast Asian research needs; procurement of library materials from Southeast Asia by the National Library, Monash University, and libraries in the United Kingdom; a concept of a Southeast Asia reference and bibliographical center. There were comments and discussion following most of the papers. The culmination is a discussion of possible future action. "Recollections on Southeast Asian Studies and the Library of Congress" by Cecil Hobbs is appended. (LS)

3. Learning Disability Research in Australia.

Abstract

Reviewed in this paper are some of the aspects of Australian practices and research activities in learning disabilities conducted over the past decade. Special emphasis is given to the diagnosis and treatment of children with severe reading problems. The influence of instruments such as the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities on the pattern of clinical and classroom practices in Australian education is traced. An approach which recognizes the interaction of aptitudes and teaching strategy is suggested as perhaps being the most efficient. Also suggested is that legislative or administrative convenience may not best serve children with learning disabilities and that teachers need training to understand both the learning process and the characteristics of exceptional children. 5. The Generalization of Psycholinguistic Research to Other English Speaking Cultures.

Abstract

This study attempted to determine whether the findings of psycholinguists to syntax and reading comprehension could be generalized to children of other English-speaking cultures. Specifically, the influence of material written at different levels of syntactic maturity (according to the T-unit analysis) upon the reading comprehension of selected Australian fourth graders was determined. The findings underline the need for caution in generalizing American research findings to other English-speaking cultures and for further studies of language development of children from other English-speaking cultures.
