IMAGE recognition (Computer vision) , *PRODUCTION losses , *IMAGE analysis , *ARABLE land , *PRODUCTION increases , *CLASSIFICATION - Abstract
The world population grows every year, however, the arable lands of the planet are practically all in use or protected by environmental laws. Humanity needs to find ways to increase productivity in the countryside, and one of the ways is by making use of technology. This paper uses computational resources to detect failures in planting lines, through the analysis of plantation images obtained by UAVs. In the developed methodology, CNN, morphological operators and an algorithm were used to draw the planting lines. With the detected failures, the aim is to help rural producers to make better decisions, increase their production and reduce losses. The results obtained were satisfactory, but are closely linked to the quality of the image classification by CNN, which presented an F1 Score around 92%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to demonstrate that the argumentative dimension of a text can be made by the strategic use of different modalities, showing a theoretical and methodological perspective for the analysis of multimodal argumentative texts. This phenomenon in which diferente modalities are employed in the co-textual plane, delas with the interlocutor's persuasion, we call argumentative multimodality. In light, above all, of the theoretical assumptions of the Semiolinguistic Theory of Discourse, by Patrick Charaudeau, who understands discourse as the use of language situated in a socio-historical context, associated with studies that take the image as an object of analysis (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006 [1996]; Santaella, 2012), we will try to present reflections and analyzes that discuss how the iconic material, in media texts, not only illustrates the verbal content, but conveys a cohesive and coherent whole with a strong argumentative content, seeking to guide the reader to certain conclusions, excluding others. For this qualitative research, we carried out a literature review of argumentation and multimodality, uniting the two notions in analyzes of diverse media texts that make up our corpus. In the end, we show how multimodality can be used as argumentative strategy and we describe three analytical categories that can be used in the analysis of multimodal texts that have an argumentative dimension. The Jatropha-curcas L. presents a great potential for fuel, but there are few studies to assess seed quality of this species. Therefore, this research aimed to study the performance of the tetrazolium salt test procedures and to verify the efficiency of the X-ray test to evaluate the seed viability of this species. Seeds were hydrated between paper towel and immersed in water to reach 30 and 40% m.c.. Following, seed coat was removed manually and seeds were immersed in 0,075 and 0,5% tetrazolium solutions for 120 mm., respectively, at 40°C. Best results of tetrazolium test comprised the hydration between paper, until the seeds reach 30% m.c. and coloration in contact with a solution of 0,5%. The Jatropha curcas L. seeds were also submitted to X-ray test, in intensity of the 25Kv for 60s. Results of tetrazolium and X-ray tests were compared to germination and it was shown that both are efficient to assess Jatropha curcas L. seeds viability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effectiveness of using the X-ray technique to assess the viability of papaya seeds. The X-ray images were performed in eight replicates of 25 seeds, placed on transparent acrylic plates on double-sided adhesive tape, previously identified, and then submitted to radiation in X-ray equipment "HP Faxitron". After exposure to X-ray radiation, the seeds were submitted to the germination test in rolls of germitest paper and kept in a germination chamber at 20-30 °C for 30 days. Seedlings were photographed and evaluated as normal seedlings, abnormal and non-germinated seeds. Afterward, the X-ray images and the seedlings from the same seeds were visually compared, and the X-ray images clearly showed seeds with and without internal filling. All abnormal seedlings were full seeds; therefore, X-ray images were not able to separate normal and abnormal. A 100% accuracy was verified by comparing the X-ray images and their respective seedlings, full seeds originated normal or abnormal seedlings, and empty seeds corresponded to non-germinated seeds. Therefore, using X-ray images is a promising technique to identify the viability of papaya seeds. The automated analysis of X-ray images is a simple, fast, and efficient technique to provide information on seed viability and generate parameters related to their germination capacity.

The main objective of this paper is to show the potential image analysis on microscopy images interpretation of clay minerals. An image analysis software was applied to manipulate High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy images of clays to improve them. Afterwards some parameters such as interplanar spacing were measured. It is also possible to measure others parameters like the angle between crossed lattice fringes, grain morphology, orientation, elongation, and crystallite sizes. The technique involves the application of fast Fourier transforms to single particles, application of the spike-boost program accessory to improve the images, and after that it is applied the inverse FFT. Although the program can be used to other interesting applications (for example, metallographic analysis of optical photomicrographs) in this paper the results obtained from the analysis of some clays minerals lattice fringes are shown.

DIGITAL cameras , *ELECTRONIC equipment , *VIDEOS , *METEORITES , *SEPTEMBER 11 Terrorist Attacks, 2001 , *EQUIPMENT & supplies - Abstract
The availability of digital cameras in mobile electronic devices and surveillance equipment has caused an exponential increase in the number of visual recording of the world. Among them are videos that capture the unexpected eruption of events. The eruption of such events is a invasion of the real into the scene, disorganizing its elements and modifying the image status. The objective of this paper is to conceptualize this type of image in addition to refer to theoretical references in order to analyze them, mostly based on the theories of Jacques Lacan. Also, we analyze some videos that capture relevant events: Kennedy's assassination, the 9/11 terrorist attack and the fall of a meteorite in Russia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EFFECT of X-rays on plants , *CASTOR beans , *SEED quality , *RENEWABLE energy sources , *PLANT morphology , *CULTIVARS - Abstract
The increasing interest in using biodiesel as an alternative energy source is increasing the importance of some oleaginous crops, such as castor bean, although high quality seeds must be used. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the X-Ray test in determining castor bean seed quality after harvesting and storage. The internal seed morphology of three seed lots of the 'IAC 2028' cultivar (from the first, second and third raceme, respectively) and two seed lots of the 'Guarani' cultivar (commercial seed lots with the three racemes mixed) was evaluated with the X-Ray test, at a radiation intensity of 20 kV and an exposure time of 60 seconds. Radiographed seeds were submitted to a germination test to determine any relationship between internal morphology and the quantity of normal and abnormal seedlings, and dead seeds. After six months of storage in paper bags, with no control of temperature or air relative humidity, seed samples were once more evaluated by the X-Ray test. The X-Ray test is effective in evaluating the internal morphology of castor bean seeds and its effects on seed physiological potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Construction and demolition waste (CDW) has become one of the most important environmental problems in large and medium-sized cities around the world. Classification and segregation of CDW particles constitute the main difficulties for their recycling. The present paper proposes a methodology for morphological classification of particles of recycled sands from CDW that consists in a typical supervised classification procedure. It uses size, shape and texture description parameters to discriminate between CDW particles from mortar, ceramic and concrete observed with scanning electron microscopy technique. The classification system reaches a reasonable success. The total success rate obtained is 73.96% and the success rates for mortar and ceramic are greater than 80%. The main limitation is the recognition of the concrete particles; the best result obtained for its success rate is 56.30%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The X-ray test is used in seed quality programs to assist morphological and physiological evaluations. Arnica (Lychnophora pinaster Mart.) is considered a medicinal species that has a remarkable number of badly formed seeds at the time of fruit dispersion. Thus, the objective of this study was to verify the influence of the maturation stages on the physiological quality of Arnica seeds by the X-ray test. The seeds used were collected in December 2003 from a natural population in the district of Itumirim, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. At seed collection the following were considered: the capitulum in which the seeds showed jointed internal papus, less mature stage, without internal papus and seeds that were dispersing. After collection the seeds were dried, cleaning and separated with a vertical blower. The seeds were placed in acrylic transparent plates, radiographed and separated into three categories, full, badly formed and empty seeds according to the internal morphology observed on the radiographs. The time and intensity used during the X-ray test were previously tested. Four replications of 50 seeds for each treatment were used. The seeds were placed in a gerbox on paper towel and kept for 90 days in an incubator (BOD) adjusted at alternating temperature (20-30°C) and 12-hour photoperiod. The parameters evaluated were speed of germination and final germination percentage. The remaining seeds were subjected to the tetrazolium test to verify seed viability. The X-ray test was shown to be effective for separating the seeds into categories based on their internal morphology. The radiation of 30Kv for 45 seconds allowed visualization of the internal structures of the seeds. The capitulum maturation stage with seeds without internal papus at the time of dispersion was the best for seed collection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fruits and vegetables losses and wastage have massive impacts on the economy, as they constitute about half of the 1.3 billion tons of food annually lost; on the environment, because its elimination generates 10%-12% of greenhouse gases, and on society, because one of every four calories produced is not consumed. Losses are generated during production, postharvest, and marketing periods. In developing countries, only in postharvest, losses reach between 40% and 50% depending on the product considered. Losses can be grouped into physical, biological, and physiological, and their reduction constitutes a challenge that countries are attempting to tackle through both individual and collaborative actions. For applying successful mitigation strategies, not only their quantification but also the identification of factors and occasions in which losses occur are of utmost importance. In this sense, the use of non-destructive techniques is especially useful as such techniques facilitate the detection of physical damages before they are visible or the identification of pathogens before they develop. Other aspects include the possibility of monitoring refrigeration conditions during storage and transport, identifying the occurrence of a cold chain break, and making it possible to rectify the same. In this paper, various techniques applicable to the identification and reduction of losses are reviewed.

Cork oak (Quercus suber L.) grows in the Mediterranean basis including Portugal and is the main species producing cork which is used prevailingly in stopper industry. In our paper, cork from Quercus suber L. over three consecutive harvests from a traditional rainfed plot, between 1999 and 2017, and cork from an irrigated plot, harvested in 2017, were studied. We applied two X–ray image analysis technologies – X–ray micro-computed tomography and X–ray microdensitometry. Cork development, related with intern porosity, growth and density was studied with the objective of understanding the cork characteristics evolution over the years and with a different water regime. The outcomes of this study suggested an increase in density and porosity over harvests and a slight decrease of the cork growth. Cork samples from the irrigated plot, compared with cork from the same year of extraction in the rainfed plot, showed higher growth rate and higher porosity. The results demonstrated the contribution of climatic factor of precipitation as well as the silviculture model in cork characteristics, showing the relevance of the present work for the definition of the management practices. These may be determinant for enhancing cork quality and quantity production through silviculture measures. Our findings can be particularly useful for stakeholders especially under the conditions of Portugal in terms of increasing the value of the industrial chain of cork.

This study evaluated the correlation between measurements of rib-eye areas of sheep carcasses by traditional methods and those obtained by scanned images. Thirty pictures of the longissimus dorsi muscle of sheep carcasses were drawn on tracing paper and analyzed for muscle area (rib-eye) using four methods: scanned images, which utilizes the software DDA -Determinador Digital de Áreas (Digital Area Determiner); measurements "A" and "B" applied to the equation: (A/2 × B/2) × π; Planimeter method and rib-eye grid method. All rib-eye area figures were measured five times by each method, setting up a completely randomized experiment with four treatments and five replicates. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and means were compared by the Tukey test, Pearson correlation and linear regression by the SAS software. Easiness and difficulties perceived by the evaluators in the performance of each method were also recorded. The method of scanned images analyzed by the software DDA showed high correlation with the methods traditionally used, and can be considered feasible to determine carcass rib-eye area, with the advantage of being easy to operate, flexible, and economical.

We live in a hyper-visual world, where the image plays a key role in identification, ideological unveiling and socialization of meanings. But for a long time the image was neglected in the context of qualitative research methods. In this sense, it is essential that the human and social sciences recognize the potential of images for the purposes of social investigation, even though creating them might be characterized as an activity that requires expertise. Image analysis is not a simple task, easily accessible to any researcher, since overcoming the inherent level of interpretation, or the level of common sense, requires deepening the theoretical frameworks that help to read beyond what it tells at a first look. In this sense, this paper presents a practical exercise of a photograph analysis based on the documentary method, which has its origin in Karl Mannheim's Sociology of Knowledge. The adaptation of the documentary method for image analysis was developed by Ralf Bohnsack, who, to that end, also returned to the theory of Iconography by Ervin Panofsky and the contributions of authors such as Max Imdahl and Roland Barthes. With this article we aim to offer a counterpoint to the recurring criticism that claims lack of theoretical grounding, reflection, and methodological rigor in both the treatment and the analysis of data. At the same time, we intended to encourage the inclusion of other sources in addition to text/interview and observation, such as photographs, images and movies, in the qualitative research.

This paper describes an approach for the colour-based classification of RGB (red-green-blue) images, acquired using a common scanner, of commercial carbonated soft drinks. Mean histograms of image colour channels were evaluated for the PCA classification of 29 brands of Guaraná, Cola, and orange flavors. Loadings for principal component axes resulted in different patterns for sample grouping on score plots according to RGB histograms. pH, sorbic acid and sucrose measurements were also correlated to the analyzed brands through PCA score plots of the digitalized images.

The X-ray test has been used for being a fast, accurate and no destructive method. The present paper was carried out with the purpose of verifying the possibility of identifying embryos abnormality of acerola seeds. Seeds from Olivier and Waldy clones androotstock, were radiographed (16 kv radiation and 180 seconds exposition time) and classified in function of their embryos condition (morphologically normal, morphologically abnormal and absent). After the X-ray, all seeds were submitted to a germination test and, after that, the seedlings and dead seeds were photographed and used in a computer with respective X-ray images. The X-ray method permits the detection of damage and abnormality on embryos of acerola seeds which are harmful to germination.

The velocity gradient can be controlled for aggregates formation during flocculation, so that aggregates can be subsequently removed in solid/liquid separation units. The batch assays help in finding the optimal coagulation and flocculation conditions, making possible to change gradient velocities and hydraulic detention time. Nevertheless, the secondary effects as result of inertial and differential sedimentation transport over aggregates are not known. Therefore, this paper aims to present the combined effect of inertial transport over aggregates, using nonintrusive image technique and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The inertial transport plays an important role in the beginning, just after paddles are turned off. After this, differential sedimentation acts to modify aggregates. Two distinct moments were observed, from when aggregates size have been modified after flocculation. The first one occurs up to the first two minutes, and the other between four and six minutes, when the transition between mechanisms is likely to happen.

ABSTRACT This paper shows the results of a research that aimed to investigate the influence of flocculated particles size on the dissolved air flotation (DAF) efficiency. Special image acquisition method and equipment were developed to characterize the flocculated particles and air microbubbles size distribution in the contact zone outlet of the DAF unit. The trials were carried out with synthetic water (temperature of 26.0±0.5oC; turbidity of 7.5±0.2 NTU; apparent color of 38±1 uC; alkalinity of 29.8±0.6 mgCaCO3.L-1; conductivity of 59.3±0.8 µS.cm-1; UV254nm of 0.128±0.004 cm-1), that it was coagulated by applying 1.9 mg.L-1 of Al3+ (pH 6.6±0.05; 22.5 mg.L-1alum). The results showed that: i) the flocculation conditions interfered directly on the efficiency of DAF process, and the best flocculation conditions were those that conducted to formation of flocculated particles size with Feret mean diameter above 300 µm; ii) the best results were obtained applying Condition 2 of flocculation (T=17 min/G=60 s-1) combined to air mass concentration of 4.8 mg.L-1, however, DAF was also capable of operating with a satisfactory efficiency when applying flocculation time of 10 minutes; iii) the special image acquisition method and equipment developed proved to be an important tool to characterize the flocculated particles and air microbubbles size distribution.

This paper presents a method for building roof contours extraction from digital image taken over complex urban scenes. The proposed method is based on the optimization of a snakes' energy function that represents building roof contours in digital images by using the dynamic programming optimization technique. As most of the building roof contours contains straight edges intercepting at right angles, appropriate geometrics constraints are enforced into the original snakes' energy function. The main advantage of using the dynamic programming algorithm for optimizing the snakes' energy function is the augmentation of the pull-in-range, when compared to the one that is usually obtained in the original solution based on variational approaches. Experimental evaluation, including visual inspection and numeric analysis, was performed by using real data and the obtained results showed the potentiality of the proposed method for extracting building roof contours from digital imagery. There is a consensus among technicians that degritters ought to remove discrete particles which present elevated settling velocities (e.g. sand, silt, ashes, fruit seeds etc.) and that units which are able to retain particles larger than or equal to 0.2 mm remove most of the material which causes operational problems to wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Nevertheless, there is no agreement on how to determine grit concentration in wastewater and particle size distribution of this material. This paper presents a method to determine particle size distribution of grit carried by sewage based on the use of digital image analysis techniques. The use of the proposed method demonstrated that, on average, 84% of grit mass carried by the WWTP Jardim das Flores (Rio Claro, SP, Brazil) influent was made up of particles larger than or equal to 0.2 mm.

BACKGROUND: Comet assay or single cell gel electrophoresis is a useful and widely applied technique for the assessment of DNA damage and repair in individual cells. Nuclei can be stained with fluorescence methods or silver salts. The latter has technical advantages such as the type of microscope used and the possibility of slide storage. Comet analysis may be performed visually, however, there is the disadvantage of subjective results, which can be minimized by automated digital analysis. OBJECTIVES: Development and validation of digital analysis method for silver stained comet assays. METHODS: Fifty comets were photographed in a standardized way and printed on paper. Before and after being automatically preprocessed by ImageJ 1.38x software, the images were manually measured and classified into five categories by three evaluators. Their estimates were compared as to their correlation and reproducibility. Afterwards, an algorithm for automated digital analysis of the comet measurements was developed based on statistical filters of median and minimum. These results were compared with those manually and visually estimated after preprocessing. RESULTS: Manual measurements of preprocessed images showed higher intraclass correlation than the original ones. Automated results had high correlation with the pre-processed manual measurements, suggesting that this system increases objectivity and can be used in the estimation of comet parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Digital analysis of silver stained comet assay proved to be feasible and better reproducible than the visual analysis.
