In this study, SAA (Simulated annealing algorithm) is used to optimize the well layout direction of tertiary infilling wells by water flooding. The specific research includes: (1) constructing a mathematical model for optimizing the well layout direction of tertiary infilling wells by water flooding; Design the search strategy of SAA; Simulation experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm; Analyze the experimental results and put forward optimization suggestions. The simulation results show that the oil recovery after optimization is about 10% higher than that before optimization. This result directly proves the effectiveness of SAA in the optimization of well layout direction of tertiary infill wells by water flooding. At the same time, the convergence of the algorithm is good in the optimization process, which shows that the SAA is efficient in solving this problem. And the algorithm in this paper has good stability and consistency in many experiments. This result verifies the effectiveness and adaptability of the algorithm in this paper, and provides strong support for the practical application in oilfield development. Through this study, it is expected to provide new ideas and methods for optimizing the well layout direction of tertiary infilling wells by water flooding, and promote the innovation and development of oilfield development technology.

The paper discusses the results of a study that highlights the importance of modern biotechnological processes in the framework of sustainable development by analyzing the activities of several international corporations. It is shown that the implementation of the principles of justice and ethics in this context is identified as one of the key challenges for the global community. The paper discusses in detail the concept of the bio-based circular economy, which is already being applied in the EU countries, although with varying degrees of success in long-term operations. It is determined that green project management plays a key role in the implementation of this concept. Particular attention is paid to the impact of the biotechnology industry on the environmental situation. It is established that materials produced with the use of biotechnology can have a negative impact on the environment. An important aspect is also the sustainability of technologies, which implies not only their natural changes but also the ability to adapt to new standards of use. In the context of highlighting these aspects, the article points out the need for further research and development of strategies aimed at effective management of environmentally friendly technologies as well as ensuring their sustainable effectiveness in the long term. The paper presents the results of a study on the role of modern biotechnological processes in the context of sustainable development on the example of a number of international corporations. The concept of the bio-based circular economy, which has been promoted in the EU member countries, although with varying degrees of success in long-term operations, is considered. It is established that the management of “green” projects plays a key role in this context.

Many cities suffer overpopulation and the presence of obsolete underutilised areas which sometimes are located in central city areas. Urban regeneration is an effective tool to “breathe life” into such spaces. Urban regeneration has become common in the last few decades; there are many successful cases of implemented or planned urban regeneration worldwide. The Authors of this paper study such best practices in order to identify current architectural trends in urban regeneration, which contribute to the creation of more green, resilient, sustainable, safe, accessible urban areas. The case studies shown in this article are the winning projects of the C40 Reinventing Cities competition, which is a global competition that was established to accelerate the development of decarbonised and resilient urban regeneration across the globe. This paper contributes to the knowledge through highlighting five architectural trends which are the most common and crucial for facilitating positive urban regeneration processes.

Residential buildings in Russia consume electricity, natural gas, thermal energy for home and water heating, as well as other resources from external suppliers. Such resource consumption results in direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions that affect the environment. Sustainable development requires the humanity to fit the environmental carrying capacity, and measures against climate change require carbon emissions to reduce. This paper compares carbon footprint reduction target declared by UNCC Conference 2015 and the Paris Agreement, as well as targets offered by other environmental institutions, to carbon emissions arising from existing Russian building standards and social norms application, and actual data. Building standards set the amount of heat per square meter to be delivered to apartment buildings depending on its geographic location, while social norms set a minimal premises area per resident. Also social standards for electricity and natural gas consumption per person exist. Russian Government decrees regulate utility services parameters for apartment and residential buildings, setting hot water temperature and consumption standards per resident and for common household needs. These norms and standards permit the minimal carbon dioxide emissions per year per resident to assess and compare to the carbon footprint reduction target. This paper demonstrates that existing Russian building standards and norms result in carbon emissions per capita significantly exceeding the targets, and recommends standards and norms update to reduce carbon footprint, admitting at the same time that such update is only a step towards the Paris Agreement targets.

Given the extensive number of empirical studies pertaining to this subject, a bibliometric study was required to create an overview of the literature on green technology and environmental sustainability. The objective of the study is to identify the most cited research journals. Six research questions were developed to study the number of publications per year, the number of citations per article, the country-wise contribution, etc. Using a bibliometric analysis, this study analyses and summarises the related literature from 1997–2023. The paper provides an all-around intellectual structure for the literature. It was found out that the research paper by Sharifi et al. (2020), entitled “The COVID-19 pandemic: Impacts on cities and major lessons for urban planning, design, and management”, published in the journal "The Science of the Total Environment," was most cited journal. China contributed the most as far as green technology and environmental sustainability are concerned. It was also found out that most of the papers were published in 2020.

SUSTAINABLE development , *SOCIAL norms , *ENVIRONMENTAL sociology , *SOCIAL ecology , *ECONOMIC development & the environment - Abstract
Our paper asserts that sustainable development is not a univocal question whose inherent truth may be clearly stated. In historical terms, sustainable development is originally a societal project aiming at a better common life on Earth, a kind of environmental and social-democratic ideal. This project, however, must unavoidably face economic and political logics that often run against it. The paper then claims that 'sustainable development' as an expression has become omnipresent in the media, an infinitely flexible mantra liable to endless adaptations and transformations. In the following section, the paper postulates that sustainable development is not solely an ecological-social-democratic project nor a norm of 'correct speak' in the public sphere, but that it is also a set of more or less articulated institutions and practices that have a fallout on social legitimacies. Finally the paper states that for many, sustainable development is also a hit target, a way of conceiving the world that, if it cannot be combated head on because of its attractive and affective aura, must at all costs be undermined from the inside and pushed out of the way. Some postulates about sustainable development indicators: the example of aquaculture. Firstly, the authors illustrate the abundance of references and initiatives enabling to implement sustainable development in aquaculture. They develop a chart to assess such initiatives with regards to the main features of sustainable development. Secondly, this paper outlines the co-construction approach of principles, criteria and indicators, selected in reference to the assumption that implementing sustainable development requires a stakeholder commitment and a collective learning process. The construction of indicators is based on criteria which refer to principles accounting for local issues and stakeholder representations of sustainable development. Finally, the third part of the paper provides a reflexive analysis of the protocol which is proposed so as to develop a more general inventory of conditions and procedures for the appropriation of sustainable development. Focusing on these conditions and procedures outlines the need for collective learning regarding the appropriation of a new value system. They also emphasize on the organizational and institutional conditions of this learning process; this implies defining a co-construction system and taking into account intermediate elements. Consequently, the proposed approach underlines the multiplicity of indicator functions. As a result, criteria and indicators are "facilitating" and "mediating" tools for stakeholders, employed in the deconstruction/construction process for implementing sustainable development. Thus the authors agree with the recent observations stemming from the evaluation of sustainable development indicators' construction approaches. These approaches demonstrate the significance of their supporting role in the consultation process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses how the concept of sustainable development interacts with scientific disciplines. First it confronts the characteristics of academic research dealing with sustainable development to the criteria formulated by T. Kuhn for disciplines, paradigms and scientific revolutions. In this framework, sustainable development does not appear as an overarching paradigm. It is interpreted differently within several disciplines, and can modify their subjects and methods of research. In the second part of the paper, more recent theory about scientific disciplines is introduced, underlining the importance of interactions with spheres external to scientific communities. The paper suggests that a major feature of sustainable development research - that has more to deal with methods than with the subjects studied - would be to deliberately assume the interactions of science, society and policy, and to deal with their consequences. We conclude with some implications of these analyses for teaching sustainable development in higher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Taking Sartre's philosophy as a starting point, our paper is deliberately both theoretical and action oriented. It aims to promote a way to develop the adequate scientific practices which the sustainable development utopia requires. To this end, it is written as a manifesto designed to stimulate debates and controversies. Following a critical review of all that is being said and done in the name of sustainable development in the political sphere as well as in the relationships social sciences entertain with the political sphere, this paper is a call to consider rigorously the difficulties and even the impossibilities of moving "from the utopia to the concepts". Introducing and articulating the almost contradictory dimensions of sustainability in real urban territories demands that a relevant method be developed to investigate this complex object. We propose the concept of "socially sustainable milieu" to try and reach this objective which requires the interdisciplinary linking of physical and social sciences. GIS and modelling need to be associated with anthropological methods. Most of all, the paper underscores the need to set "inhabitants" at the heart of the scientific project, thus reversing the usual focus and starting with an investigation of the way each individual reconciles the "three pillars" of sustainable development and builds his/her relationship with sustainable urban milieus. This may help rise above the still top-down views of governance, thus enabling scientists to contribute to developing the political sustainable utopia in real sites and situations. Along with the emergence of the "sustainable city" concept, urban issues are assuming increasing importance in research and debates relating to the environment. In order to contribute to reflection on achievements and interdisciplinary research perspectives, this paper proposes a retrospective and prospective account of city and urban analyses conducted in the journal Natures Sciences Sociétés. Based on the corpus of writings published in the journal since its inception, the author develops a critical analysis around five themes: urban nuisances and the quality of the urban living environment; local pollution and heritage management of urban living environment; urban atmospheric pollution and human health; urban ecology and nature in the city; from urban ecology to the sustainable city. The paper then shows the contribution made by these articles and considerations in the development of an interdisciplinary perspective to investigate the relationship that people have with nature. This analysis highlights the heuristic potential offered by the broadening of problematics and the decompartmentalization of approaches as well as the conceptual, methodological, and epistemological difficulties and stumbling blocks of interdisciplinary approaches that link natural sciences and social sciences. In the Amazonian context, some authors analyze the evolution of the agricultural frontier as a pre-determinated dynamic: the stabilization of the frontier, which has been colonized by family farmers, would repeat the Brazilian model of land tenure, with the domination of big properties and the marginalization of family farming. This paper is based on the hypothesis that the stabilization of the frontier depends on sedentarization strategies of the farmers: alongside public politics and the economic context, examining migration choices of family farmers is essential to understand the type of frontier stabilization occurring. Those strategies can not be seen as an economically rationalistic behaviour, but depends on the reproduction logics of the families. This paper focuses on the migrations of the farmers’ sons in the Transamazonian frontier in order to reveal the strategies of their families’ mobility, and their complex relations with the space and the society. Concluding with a statistical analysis showing that there is no factor explaining the whole migrations of the sons, I present a qualitative analysis in order to establish a typology of farmer families according to their mobility practices; and I attempt to map this typology to show its importance in different localities over 30 years. Finally, I point out that the stabilization of the frontier is closely linked with the families’ strategies, and that the debate on sedentarization requires a more complex model of the relations between social organization and land. Strategy determines the success of the long-term development of any enterprise. In the context of sustainability, the consumer wants to be aware of what strategic principles the company adheres to, including questions about the use of environmental materials, technological innovation, corporate social responsibility, and other aspects. All these aspects should be reflected in the sustainability strategy, which, like any document, is in closed mode. In order to broadcast certain business practices in the field of sustainable development, any brand of light industry and fashion industry needs a system of strategic communications. This paper analyzes the corporate experiences of famous brands in the industry, examining their mission, vision, principles, ideology, philosophy and so on. The study has created a unique model that can help brands with sustainability information policy from the perspective of privacy in terms of partial disclosure of their sustainability strategy. In the future, the study can be extended to quantitative and qualitative analysis of the effects of changes in the communication system.

Effective use of the potential of both an individual country and its regions in order to ensure sustainable development is possible only on the basis of conscious, purposeful, scientifically grounded actions on the transformation of regional systems. That is why, the aim of the paper is to provide an analysis of the theoretical aspects of regional sustainable development in the EU and Ukraine, which will create a methodological basis for the further development of practical mechanisms for ensuring balanced regional development. As a main method of research, we use the critical analysis and comparison of normative documents, analytical reports, regional development strategies and scientific publications on the issues of sustainable development. As a result, the authors substantiate the essence of sustainable development and clarified the concept of regional sustainable development. This made it possible to determine its features. The paper also summarizes the institutional framework for ensuring regional sustainable development, including the justification of informal constraints, formal rules and coercive mechanisms. The authors identify vectors for ensuring the regional sustainable development in Ukraine. However, for the effective implementation of certain strategic priorities, a change in the public consciousness is needed in order to understand the importance of regional sustainable development, as well as the definition of clear criteria for the achievement of sustainable development and continuous monitoring of its level. We consider education as one of the most effective tools that will allow the formation of a system of knowledge, skills and competences necessary for the formation of citizens responsible for the future of the country.

Geni Jora ,gender equality ,sustainable development ,Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
The paper is a semiotic study of Abidah El-Khalieqy’s novel Geni Jora. Semiotics is definedwith reference to the study of signs and sign systems, and “signs” concern any things that stand for other things. The semiotic analysis used in this paper was adopted from Chandler’s framework where he combines the Saussurean and Peircean concepts of signs and modes of relationship. The result of the semiotic reading of Geni Jora is that Jora, the main character of the novel, is a symbol, representingAbidah’s resistance to gender injustice within Muslim circle in particular and in Indonesia in general. The novel symbolizes Abidah’s concern about Indonesian (Muslim) women, who suffer from discrimination, injustice, abuse, and violence due to the stronghold of patriarchy. It also signifies her insistence, urging the people of Indonesia to seriously take actions to bring about gender equality and to provide women’s quality education, without which Indonesia would not be able to make sustainable community and development happen.

Raising awareness through Virtual Experiencing (RAVE) and a Cross-Cultural Perspective on Raising Awareness through Virtual Experiencing (C-RAVE) approaches are used in this article to promote awareness of concerns relating to linguistic stereotyping. Virtual Reality (VR) technology has completely changed several facets of modern life, including instruction, training and entertainment. We give a summary of the techniques employed to increase awareness of how stereotypes might distort our vision. The patterns of the answers provided by the participants demonstrate that the reported gender of the speaker in addition to the accent (native vs. non-native), has an impact on the respondents' assessments of performance. Additionally, we were able to show that the discussions and ideas produced by these response patterns led to a rise in self-awareness of language and stereotyping-related problems. The paper gives a general description of RAVE and examines how it may improve education, create empathy and foster good social change. Focus on a critique of our methodologies and place our work within a larger debate of strategies and efforts for how educational institutions might actively contribute to combating (language) discrimination and bias in many ways. The relevance of Raising Awareness by Virtual Reality and Cross-Cultural Raising of Awareness by Virtual Reality in fostering inclusion and understanding in a society that is becoming more sustainable globally connected is highlighted in the article’s conclusion.

Modern cities are centers of economic, social, cultural and intellectual life, which makes it crucially important to ensure proper conditions for their sustainable development. The paper is intended to elaborate on some spatial aspects of the sustainable development of million cities in Russia. The study used official statistics, as well as data from the information and analytical system of urban development VEB.RF. The research method consists in comparing the values of indicators characterizing cities’ spatial particularities with each other and with the national average. The article analyzes accessibility of objects of interest for the population (social infrastructure facilities, leisure centers). It reveals that million cities differ in these parameters quite significantly and can be categorized into three groups. The most numerous group (8 cities) is one embracing cities with liveability above the national average; in four cities, the liveability level is equivalent to the all-Russia average; and two millionplus cities are lagging behind the others. The research also indicates the factors defining the accessibility of objects of interest for city inhabitants: its area, population density, saturation of urban space with such objects and the specificities of their localization, uniqueness of urban planning, and the quality of the urban environment.

Nowadays, Morocco keeps showing several efforts as part of sustainable development to introduce environmental management measures within companies, no matter what their size or activity field. However, studies prove the impact of these measures on psychosocial risk management which are still limited or inexistent. This paper explores the impact of poor environmental management as a factor affecting health and psychosocial well-being at work. The question is: How can environmental practices contribute to reducing psychosocial risks in the workplace? To answer this question, an experiment including the distribution of a questionnaire was carried out, addressed to 150 employees working in industrial companies in the Larache’s region, Morocco. The collected responses show that the psychosocial health of more than ninety percent of those surveyed is directly impacted by living conditions at work. These results indicate that responsible environmental management practices are necessary to improve employee well-being and reduce psychosocial risks in organisations.

Green logistics has become an integral part of economic, political and social debates in all areas of activity. The environment has become a major priority for all organizations, whether public or private, and has prompted them to go beyond the two predominant management concepts (competitiveness and performance), and revolutionize their management methods to become more agile and, above all, more sustainable in the face of various changes, particularly climate change. In fact, it’s all about “doing better with less” impacts to respect the environment. Facing this situation, the Moroccan public university could not stay back as an active part of the business ecosystem. It also had to adopt Green Logistics, which had become an urgent imperative in order to ensure its own performance at national and international level. This paper is an exploratory study that attempts to analyze the current situation of the Moroccan public university by answering the following questions: What are the motivations behind Green Logistics at Moroccan public universities? What are its practices and areas of application? Are there any obstacles, and if so, what are they? And what are the university’s future prospects?

As environmental consciousness is growing, organizations are required to implement environmental-friendly practices, and to develop sustainable strategies not just for the health of the environment but also for sustaining the industry for the future. Today consumers value organizations that go green and are willing to pay a price premium for sustainable goods. Then, it is an incumbent need for the industry to integrate sustain ability concepts into its traditional supply chain management. The industry is a driving force behind sustainable development, where industry 4.0 is set to be a critical enabler. Nevertheless, to foster sustainable development of the industry, there is a need for applying uniform standards in environmental management to reduce the consumption of renewable resources and develop productive ways of reusing and recycling the used/waste resources. This paper, theoretical by nature, explores the impact of Green Supply Chain Practices (GSCP) on accelerating industry-related targets of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 on building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation. Based on the literature review, conceptual interlinkages between the targets of SDG 9 and those SDGs that address issues of social, economic, and environmental goals, are studied in the context of GSCP. This work provides an understanding of the impact of green practices on the achievement of the SDGs.

The relevant literature on environmental strategy has carried out extensive research on the internal and external factors that affect the sustainable development of enterprises, but some important horizontal factors, such as the influence from peers, are ignored. Based on benchmarking theory and expectation theory, this paper makes an empirical analysis on the panel data of Listed Companies in 24 industries in China from 2001 to 2019. The results show that the number of Listed Companies in the industry has a positive impact on the passive and active environmental strategies of the whole industry. The outstanding performance of peers promotes the whole industry to actively implement the active environmental strategy and reduce the passive environmental strategy. At the same time, the longer the listing time of the listed companies, the more able the companies to strengthen the impact of the number of listed companies on the implementation of active or passive environmental strategy in the whole industry, and the smaller the relative scale, the more able the companies to strengthen the impact of performance on the implementation of active environmental strategy in the whole industry.

Industrial and technological revolutions have always changed the way companies create value. More recently, sustainability has become a source of inspiration and innovation and most organizations start redesigning their business models based on sustainability concepts. Sustainable practices have become critical issues for industrial engineering, dealing with technological and management principles. Engineering is a major driver of sustainable development by connecting social needs and environmental priorities with appropriate technologies and management practices. According to UNESCO sustainable engineering is about designing and operating daily systems so that the energy and resources they use are sustainable that is, they are used at a rate that safeguards the availability of natural resources for future needs. The literature on the subject is mostly dedicated to technical and design aspects of engineering principles integrating sustainability concepts. Works on how sustainable engineering principles impact sustainable value creation are scarce. Exploring the concepts and the main principles of sustainable value and sustainable engineering, this paper shed light on supporting organizations operationalizing the transition toward business models which are environmentally, socially, and financially sustainable. This work aims to provide a conceptual framework setting out how sustainable engineering principles can provide a thinking guide to connect corporate sustainable value creation drivers and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Investment in human capital, along with natural resource management, is an important indicator of sustainable development. One of the areas of such investments is the creation of artificial intelligence systems that allow for the classification of texts. This paper analyzes the use of artificial intelligence systems for stylometric text analysis. On the basis of the algorithm of the convolutional artificial immune system, a system for stylometric analysis of texts was developed and implemented in software. In order to determine the possibility of using this system to determine the authorship of literary works, it was trained and tested. For this, the works of two authors were chosen: Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Kryukov. This system demonstrated a high quality of text classification and a good speed of work and learning. So, to test the performance of the system, 11 works by Leo Tolstoy and 12 works by Fedor Kryukov were taken that were not used to train the system. All works of these authors were classified correctly. It should be noted that the artificial immune system algorithm can also be successfully used in other tasks requiring text classification.
