Although learning analytics (LA) often processes massive data, not all courses in higher education institutions are on a large scale, such as courses for employed adult learners (EALs) or master's students. This places LA in a new situation with small datasets. This paper explores the contemporary situation of how LA has been used for small datasets, whereby we examine how the observed LA provisions can be validated in practice, which opens up possible LA solutions for small datasets and takes a further step from previous studies to enhance this topic. By examining the field of LA, a systematic literature review on state-of-the-art LA and small datasets was conducted. Thirty relevant articles were selected for the final review. The results of the review were validated through a small-scale course for EALs at a Swedish university. The findings revealed that the methods of multiple analytical perspectives and data sources with the support of contexts and learning theories are useful for strengthening the reliability of results from small datasets. More empirical evidence is required to validate possible LA methods for small datasets. Perceptions of the role and efficacy of written feedback in teaching and learning among teaching staff in British higher education institutions have not been extensively researched. In the present study 48 lecturers in one university and from a cross-section of disciplinary backgrounds were interviewed with respect to their lived experiences with writing assessment feedback. Like most universities, theirs has a stated commitment to academic excellence by, among other things, ensuring timely and useful feedback on assignments. The findings suggest, however, that institutional policies and departmental practices related to formative assessment in this respect are not having the intended effect. Teachers have varied perceptions and beliefs about the purposes of written feedback, and are uncertain about what it achieves and what use students make of it. Purpose: The pandemic's health and social issues have significantly altered the character and manner of teaching and learning in higher education across the country. The use of technology to replace or integrate face-to-face learning with online learning has become a necessary requirement for promoting and continuing learning processes. Furthermore, integrating technology is a goal of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) to make teaching and learning more innovative and sophisticated. This paper is based on a systematic review grounded in a synthesis of research papers and documents analyzing the current status of teachers' pedagogy through online learning modes in the context of Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach: Through content analyses of academic studies in higher education and reflection on the online teaching experiences, this study discusses how students' learning is associated with teachers' teaching approaches in the modern era of digitalization and innovation. Findings: The review and analysis suggest that online teaching is not viewed as an innovative phenomenon; rather, teachers simply teach their traditionally designed face-to-face courses through the use of technology. The paper suggests that transforming teachers' pedagogical insight to make online learning sustainable is an urgent need for higher education. Originality/value: The analysis provides a basis for consideration of teacher learning and quality education (SDG #4) to fulfill the nation's agenda for sustainable development. In this invited commentary for the special issue on 'How built spaces influence practices of educators' work: An examination through practice lens,' I discuss how insights from the theory of practice architecture and the theory of practice ontology are helpful in exploring the complexities of educational practices, particularly with reference to the locations within and through which such practices take place. By focusing on the doings, sayings and relatings that take place in such practices and on their material conditions, the contributions add much nuance and detail to the understanding of educational practices, particularly when such practices are 'in transition' due to forces that are often beyond the influence of the actors in such practices themselves. The main critical point I make concerns the sayings utilised by the authors themselves. I suggest that references to 'learning' are problematic in the study of educational practices. I single out the idea of seeing schools, colleges and universities as 'learning environments.' I provide reasons why this way of engaging with educational practices is problematic – both from a research perspective and from a practice and policy perspective – and suggest that the better designation would be that of seeing them as educational practices. In 1994, the African National Congress (ANC)-ledgovernment implemented a Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) program that entailed providing South Africans with stable and regular electricity supplies. Government through the state president declared COVID-19 a pandemic in 2019. Institutions of higher education resorted to introduce online teaching and learning as a method of ensuring that section 27(1) (a) (b) of the Constitution of the republic of South Africa was executed. Load shedding brought numerous challenges in the education settings in the institutions of higher learning. The crisis led to institutional economy and disrupted academic performance at institutions of higher learning. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether load shedding can be regarded as a pandemic post COVID-19. Access the impact of load shedding at institutions of higher learning. Therefore, this is a conceptual paper and it relied on existing data for analysis and interpretation. Educators are responsible for developing generic graduate capabilities, but the theoretical justification for teaching techniques is infrequently articulated. This conceptual paper aims to provide theory-informed principles to guide teaching practice in developing future-focused generic capabilities. The paper describes future-focused generic capabilities and then considers how cognitive constructivist, transformational and social learning theories inform the development of these capabilities. From these theories, four principles (4Es) for teaching generic capabilities are identified: students need to 1) be Enthused to develop personally relevant generic capabilities, 2) have opportunities to Explore by intellectually and emotionally connecting learning to processes, topics and situations, 3) develop by purposefully Extending their capabilities within varied and progressively more complex contexts, and 4) be given opportunities to Exhibit their capabilities. We contend that the development of generic capabilities can be informed by this set of principles. By unearthing and researching them, educators can become more versatile, informed, and impactful. The complexities involved in HyFlex teaching and learning prompt us to consider what we know about university students' experiences as they transition into this new pedagogical approach post-pandemic. As part of a larger mixed-methods study, this paper focuses on the qualitative phase, which investigated HyFlex learning (HL) experiences of 17 students from six higher education institutions to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how HL is viewed, the challenges faced and what competencies shaped their engagement with HL. The results show that students' experience is influenced by instructors' HL competence in synchronous and asynchronous aspects of the classroom and students' e-learning self-efficacy. Students' agentic competence, developed and augmented during the pandemic, was illustrated in their reported strategies (i.e., problem-solving, decision-making, self-regulation, and adaptability) engaging within the HL environment. The topic of this paper is the relocation of a proven learning mechanism in a real-life working situation to a university setting. The aim is to discuss to what degree the types of learning generated in the original setting can survive the re-contextualisation and what might be done to retain as much value as possible. The original learning situation was an aesthetic experience – choral singing and conducting – that allowed nine senior managers to sense various relational phenomena, such as control and empowerment, multi-voice teamwork, the impact of own body, empathy, and vulnerability. The target learning domain is a university setting. The paper draws on various theories of learning. The re-contextualisation is discussed in the form of five hurdles that must be overcome. For each hurdle, a design hypothesis is proposed. Learning analytics (LA) is an emerging area that has had extensive development in higher education in recent years, focused both on the learning process of students within subjects and on monitoring their trajectories in training programmes. However, most of the developments remain in the pilot phase without reaching institutional adoption. This paper reports the results of a systematic review of the literature carried out with the aim of identifying the factors that influence the adoption of LA, as well as the existing strategies that facilitate such adoption in higher education institutions. The results show that factors for LA adoption are situated in multiple dimensions, including stakeholders at different levels, institutional and pedagogical processes, technical limitations and ethical considerations. This work contributes with a consolidated list of 14 critical factors to be considered to effectively adopt LA tools, addressing planning, strong leadership, collaboration and prioritizing senior management commitment, goal setting, cross‐organizational design, educational process redesign, system integration and legacy system linkage. On the other hand, a variety of frameworks, models and approaches are distinguished in the literature to help the adoption of LA, however, none of them cover all the factors involved in such adoption. Therefore, we provide a compilation of strategies that have been used in the literature to reduce the gaps associated with the different factors described. Introduction: As higher education institutions (HEIs) moved from in-person to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, various challenges were presented. Using a large online survey conducted during the pandemic, this paper investigates the impact of COVID-19 on learning and institutional support offered to students in HEIs in South Africa. Methods: The study utilized a closed-ended questionnaire on a data-free online platform. The study sample included South African youth aged 18-35 years who were enrolled for some type of educational training or in higher education institutions (including private colleges). Data was benchmarked to the 2019 estimates of the youth population in educational institutions. Descriptive statistics are presented. Results: Among the 7011 student participants, the main challenges experienced during lockdown were loss of study time (57.9%), insufficient money for essential personal items for studying (55.8%), loss of social contact (42.2%) and insufficient money for food (40.1%). Overall, 47.0% of students reported having free access to the internet, 49.5% used personal internet or paid for internet access and 3.5% indicated having no access to internet. The majority rated their institution's eLearning portal as good or excellent, and 23.4% thought their eLearning portal was of poor quality. Significantly fewer (38.1%) technical and vocational education and training (TVET) college students indicated that their institution provided the capacity to conduct virtual learning compared to those enrolled at other types of institutions. Almost two thirds of students (66.2%) from TVET colleges experienced difficulty in communicating with their institutions. Half of the students (49.9%) reported that they had a suitable place to study during lockdown, while 78.6% had regular access to electricity during lockdown. Significantly more TVET and University of Technology students received transport to return home and fee refunds. Conclusion: While it was encouraging that most HEIs had capacity for online learning and made provision of internet access for students, it was concerning that students who are enrolled at TVET colleges faced more learning challenges during the lockdown. This highlights the inequality in learning support at different types of institutions, and that effective support from HEIs to students during the COVID-19 pandemic was not fully implemented. The article focuses on the study which attempts to employ curricular reformation in undergraduate biological education. The study is done through the use of two exercises, which are both part of a course in developmental biology at the University of Toledo. The first exercise is "Cytodifferentiation: Formation of Multinucleated Myotubes in vitro," in which students are asked to observe changes in the experimented cells. The second exercise is "Cell Aggregation: Formation of Multicellular Systems," in which students are asked to investigate one or two influences on aggregation. Through these exercises, the students were able to realize that more exercises should be adapted in other subjects as well for learning purposes.

Higher education institutions are increasingly relying on learning analytics to collect voluminous amounts of data ostensibly to inform student learning interventions. The use of learning analytics, however, can result in a tension between the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) principles of autonomy and non-malfeasance on the one hand, and the principle of beneficence on the other. Given the complications around student privacy, informed consent, and data justice in addition to the potential to do harm, many current practices around learning analytics within higher education can be considered to be in violation of CAS standards. This paper aims to explore this tension in greater detail and argues that the student voice offers a promising way to ensure that students' autonomy is respected, harm is reduced, and that higher education institutions can still fulfil the principle of beneficence. Assessment of Learning in Higher Education (ALHE) has, since its roots in the early 1980s, grown into a routine activity in higher education institutions in the United States that is led by thousands of professionals who contribute to a growing body of scholarship. Yet, there are few formal ALHE training programs, no licensure or certification for ALHE professionals, no accreditation for ALHE programs, and only a handful of dedicated journals, resulting in limited outside recognition of ALHE as a discipline. Failure to fully establish ALHE as a discipline puts ALHE in a dangerous position, leaving its progress in advancing student learning vulnerable to external forces. The purposes of this paper are to examine the progress ALHE has made in advancing as a discipline and to explore the benefits and tensions inherent in growing ALHE as a discipline. Using lessons from Library Science, the paper concludes by identifying steps that show promise for continuing the advancement of ALHE as a discipline and ensuring ALHE is ready to meet the needs of future generations of learners. The Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) teaching and learning methodology has gained increased recognition as a nuanced form of virtual exchange, especially in the last five years in South Africa and during the Coronavirus-2019 global pandemic era. COIL serves to connect local and global entities as strategic partnerships are developed between higher education institutions in different countries. An important condition for its successful implementation to achieve targeted learning outcomes is the active involvement, creativity, and collaboration of disciplinary teams. These teams address the epistemological (knowing), ontological (self-identity) and praxis (action) elements of the curriculum. Drawing from Boschma's dimensions of proximity, this paper uses a concurrent nested mixed methods research approach to explicate how the integration of COIL into the curriculum increases cognitive and social proximities while reducing geographical distances among students. Introduction: Quality training and mentoring are crucial components of successful career development for early mid career researchers (EMCRs). This paper describes the overarching framework of novel ongoing national Training and Mentoring Programme Melbourne University Sydney Queensland:Impact (MUSQ:Impact) for musculoskeletal researchers, including a description of how it was set up and established, and lessons learned from its implementation. Results: The MUSQ:Impact programme spans four multidisciplinary musculoskeletal research teams across three universities in Australia, comprising 40–60 EMCR members. It was established to provide EMCRs with a unique learning environment and opportunities to gain exposure to, and network with, other national musculoskeletal research teams. Specific goals are to focus on core research competencies (e.g. writing skills, managing grant budgets, public speaking and media engagement, research translation), provide career mentoring, fund development activities (e.g. conference attendance, laboratory visits, skill development courses), and share training resources (e.g. data dictionaries, project summaries). A Steering Committee of 10–12 EMCR members, co‐chaired by a senior researcher and one EMCR, is responsible for overseeing MUSQ:Impact and organising regular activities, including a monthly webinar series, a mentor/mentee scheme, annual group research retreats, annual infographic competition, and funding awards. An evaluation survey found that most participants perceived each activity to be beneficial and of value to their research career and development. Conclusion: This paper presents the structure of national training and mentoring programme that serves as a potential template for other research teams to adapt within their own contexts. This paper presents the results of a systematic review of literature, reported in research journals, on the experiences of higher educational institutions regarding teaching, learning, and assessment during the Covid-19 pandemic. Different studies related to the Covid-19 pandemic have been conducted within the South African context, but there has not been a systematic review of these studies highlighting the lessons learned, how these lessons have affected education in higher education institutions (HEIs), and how these lessons can inform future planning. This study aims to summarise literature on teaching, learning and assessment in higher education institutions and to conceptualise possible guidelines for future planning. An analysis of 52 research articles revealed 7 implications for the lessons learnt from the pandemic for future teaching, learning and assessment (TLA) in South African HEIs (realisation of the affordances of technology for TLA, institutional changes related to online TLA during the pandemic, students' experiences related to TLA, lecturer's experiences related to TLA, the need for care, assessment related matters, approaches to teaching, learning and assessment) and several recommendations for how these lessons can be leveraged to help HEIs to prepare effectively for future catastrophic disruptions to education in South African HEIs. The discussion shows the digital divide that exists within the South African population and other contextual challenges faced by higher education institutions during the pandemic, and the different sacrifices by both institutions and students to survive the pandemic. Overall, the findings of this review provide valuable guidance for HEIs and stakeholders involved in TLA, offering insights on how to integrate the lessons learned from the pandemic into their future planning and strategies. This study adopted a participant observation method and reflected on planning and operating a nine-week nine-credit Taiwanese culture and Mandarin study abroad program. The program ran successfully in the face of surging COVID-19 cases in Kaohsiung and increased political tension associated with Nancy Pelosi's visit in Taiwan during the summer of 2022. This program resulted from a new international partnership between West Virginia University (WVU) in the United States and National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan (NSYSU) through the Taiwan's Huayu Bilingual Exchanges of Selected Talent (BEST) initiative funded by Taiwan's Ministry of Education in 2021. This paper discusses how the administrative and pedagogical collaboration between WVU and NSYSU has made the study abroad programs affordable and accessible for students and productive for WVU student and faculty participants alike. The primary objective of the paper is twofold. First, the faculty lead's experience is shared to offer insights for higher education institutions in the U.S. and Taiwan interested in taking part in BEST or other grant-funded programs as they evaluate their options for developing study abroad programs. Second, administrators and faculty who have completed their study abroad programs can reflect on the feedback from both students and the faculty lead in the study as they assess their programs. Successful retention of students through understanding their motivations and behaviours is a challenge to universities worldwide. Whilst the impact of withdrawals is an issue for all institutions, attrition for distance-learning providers is particularly problematic owing to higher non-completion rates, less physical visibility, and because distance-learners tend to have more complex lives. This paper examines students' personal stories explaining their decisions to withdraw from university study. It considers 641 written discourses initiated by students as part of their requests to withdraw, covering the challenges they face, and the complex combinations of factors that contribute to their decisions to give up. This qualitative approach was adopted as a necessary complement to the quantitative rush of metrics information that universities now provide on withdrawal figures. Three themes selected are: deferral/withdrawal, time available, and preparedness for study. The paper concludes that complementary qualitative insights both add clarity and detail to institutional understanding and reduces oversimplification of complex decision-making from unidimensional quantitative approaches. The paper investigates the level of development of a creative mindset in the training of music education professionals. The research is based on the experimental method which examines the level of creativity of students before and upon completion of the developed training program focusing on development of the creative thinking using cutting-edge technology. The Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) was used to measure the level of students' creativity. The study was conducted at the School of Music, Soochow University. A total of 95 students were involved in the experiment. According to the results of the pre-test, the majority of students (52%) have a low level of creativity development, while 35% have an average level and only 13% have a low level. Background: Investigating emotion sequence patterns in the posts of discussion forums in massive open online courses (MOOCs) holds a vital role in shaping online interactions and impacting learning achievement. While the majority of research focuses on the relationship between emotions and interactions in MOOC forum discussions, research on identifying the crucial difference in emotion sequence patterns among different interaction groups remains in its infancy. Objectives: This research utilizes deep learning and sequential pattern mining to investigate whether there are differences in emotion sequence patterns across different groups of learners who exhibit various types of interactions in online discussion forums. Methods: Data from a comprehensive array of sources, including log files, discussion texts and scores from 498 learners in online discussion forums, were collected for this study. The agglomerative hierarchical algorithm is used to classify learners into groups with different levels of interactions. Additionally, we implement and evaluate multiple deep learning models for detecting different emotions from online discussions. Relevant emotion sequence patterns were identified using sequence pattern analysis and the identified emotion sequence patterns were compared across different groups with different levels of interactions. Results and Conclusions: Using an agglomerative hierarchical algorithm, we classified learners into three distinct groups characterized by different levels of interactions: high, average and low level. Leveraging the bi‐directional long short‐term memory model for emotion detection yielded the highest predictive performance, with an impressive F‐measure of 94.01%, a recall rate of 93.83% and an accuracy score of 95.01%. The results also revealed that learners in the low‐level interaction group experienced more emotion transition from boredom to frustration than the other two groups. Therefore, the aggregation of students into groups and the utilization of their MOOC log data offer educators the capability to provide adaptive emotional feedback, customize assessments and offer more personalized attention as needed. In the context of the new era, the distinctive function of BD (big data) analysis and prediction also introduces a new way of thinking to university IPE (ideological and political education), broadens the domain of university IPE, and enhances the curricular offerings of IPE universities. In order to enhance the intelligence and personalization of the intelligent teaching system, this paper describes in detail the design and implementation processes for each component of the system. It also uses the association mining rule algorithm of data mining. To maintain population diversity, a population initialization method and a neighborhood-based search operator are used, both of which are based on a thorough consideration of the characteristics of complex networks. The neighborhood search strategy enhances the local search capability of the TLBO (Teaching-Learning Based Optimization) algorithm. The optimized TLBO algorithm presented in this paper achieves the highest average modularity value of 0.5238 through testing on real-world data sets. Background: Traditional lecturing used in teaching has the lowest retention rate; the use of games as part of an instruction method may enhance retention and reinforce learning by creating a dynamic educational environment. This study aims to systematically review the literature on educational games for the health professions to identify trends and investigate assessment tools used to measure its learning outcomes. Methods: Seven databases were used in the search: ERIC, Education Research Complete, Medline, Medline Complete, Academic Search Complete, The Cochrane Library and PubMed. Results: The search identified 2865 papers; among them, 1259 were excluded and 22 were evaluated. The selection incorporated five full papers which focused directly on the health professionals. Two studies involved the use of board games and two studies involved card games, crossword puzzles and one study involved a team quiz competition. Overall, studies lacked a strong link between the use of games for both instructional and assessment purposes. Conclusion: Gaming makes a positive impact on the teaching/learning process. However, existing assessment methodologies have been not fully captured the learning that may occur in these games. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss key aspects of knowledge management (KM) education in response to challenges posed by the necessity to improve KM as a discipline and an established professional field.Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a systematic review of the current literature. This review was used as input in a recent panel held at the 2016 International Conference on Knowledge Management (ICKM). Despite the increasingly widespread adoption of building information modeling (BIM) in Australia, a steady pipeline of BIM-ready graduates required to meet industry demand remains elusive. Anecdotal evidence suggests that universities in Australia have not been successful in delivering BIM-enabled graduates of the correct caliber, due to a plethora of barriers. This paper aims to identify, define, and delineate barriers to the integration of BIM education into programs in Australian higher education institutions (HEIs), and unearth the antecedents of these barriers. A postpositivist philosophical design will be implemented to undertake a cross-sectional and mixed methods approach to collecting and analyzing primary data. Data will be collected through qualitative methods, 18 structured and 7 semistructured interviews, with key BIM educators in Australia. Data will be analyzed using NVivo. The findings reveal that four thematic groups of barriers hinder effective BIM education integration in Australian HEIs. These are (1) change management challenges, (2) curriculum and content limitation, (3) educators' problems, and (4) disconnect with the industry. The research concludes that a major overhaul is needed to change the modus operandi via which the industry, accreditation bodies, and government policymakers engage with HEIs to define BIM education programs. However, given a notable lack of investment and collaboration from industry and government, HEIs cannot manage the change needed to run effective BIM training programs. Therefore, cross-government and industry collaboration and financial support is needed to stimulate a cultural shift in existing HEIs' provisions to generate future generations of highly skilled and competent BIM-enabled graduates. This paper, to the best of the authors' knowledge, represents the first attempt in Australia to contextualize HEIs' capacity to deliver advanced BIM training, given the wider and prevailing economic and political topology that currently fails to adequately support the supply of fully trained graduates. Background: In learning mechanics, students often believe that "force is exerted on moving objects." As this misconception called "motion implies a force" (MIF) is difficult to correct, various teaching methods have been proposed, such as showing refutational/explanatory text (Palmer & Flanagan, 1997; Takagaki, 2004), promoting students' conceptual development (Dekkers & Thijs, 1998) and epistemology‐focused instruction (Elby, 2001). Objectives: The purpose of this research is to empirically examine the effectiveness of an alternative method we have proposed for helping students overcome MIF misconceptions. The method is called the "Error‐based simulation (EBS)" that creates a counterexample to students' misconceptions by simulating erroneous phenomena based on students' incorrect ideas. Methods: We conducted a two‐year experimental implementation of EBS in mechanics classes at a technical college, and investigated the results. Students worked on the pre‐test, the exercise with EBS, the post‐test, and the delayed post‐test. Results and Conclusions: In both years, MIF‐answers (wrong answers due to MIF) in the learning task (problems learned with EBS) significantly decreased from the pre‐test to the post‐test and the delayed post‐test. The decrease in other erroneous answers was not significant. EBS was effective mainly in correcting MIF‐answers, and the effect was maintained over the long term. In the transfer task (new problems), the ratio of MIF‐answers to all erroneous answers in both the post‐test and delayed post‐test was much lower than that on the learning task in the pre‐test. These results suggest that learning with EBS not only corrected MIF‐answers but also promoted the correction of MIF misconceptions. A comparison between our results and those of other methods for correcting MIF misconceptions revealed that the effect of EBS was equal to or greater than that of other methods mentioned above. Purpose: This paper aims to contribute by placing the missing "learner agent" within the entire process of learning. To understand under what social conditions, it is possible to develop autonomous learners who are conscious of self, able to reflect on their identities, roles and responsibilities, to learn and develop professionally, in alignment with the organizational goals and objectives. Design/methodology/approach: The paper uses empirical data from a higher educational institution to provide insights on how it might be possible to intervene to incorporate workspaces which allow learner agent reflection resulting in individual and organizational learning processes, devoid of power exercises and manipulation strategies. Findings: The empirical findings reveal the crucial role of learner agents, and positive outcomes associated with learning that happens be an autonomous choice and process, with minimal structural influence. The relevance of reflection, personal identity, social conditions, dialogic third spaces and transformation opportunity structures in developing lifelong learners, learning societies and democratic learning organizations is emphasized. Research limitations/implications: This study suggests plausible directions in which the model of learning organizations can move forward, in the form of designing transformation structures or workspaces where learner agents have the opportunity to reflect on their tacit knowledge, job responsibilities and functions in an autonomous manner to generate learning, which is democratic and un-contested in nature. Originality/value: The significance of learner agent in the entire learning process is demonstrated, to place forward a learner-centric model of learning organization where structure and agency harmoniously merge to form one common ground, where individual learning becomes organizational learning with no hidden power dynamics. In this paper, a smart greenhouse project has been presented as an example of a sustainability-focused project-based learning experience for undergraduates. While project-based instruction and learning experience has already gained enough momentum in several fields of education, the inclusion of sustainability perspectives from the science and engineering fields of studies is yet to make its room in the current course curricula as well as in the mindset of new generations of engineering undergraduates. This smart greenhouse project is an example of how sustainability can be brought into a classroom setting of engineering and technology programs as a project-based learning experience. The objective of this smart greenhouse project is to create an automated system capable of growing vegetation with little human input by utilizing electricity, computer programming, and a microcontroller operation. While this project was implemented by a group of two students with electrical engineering technology (EET) major as parts of their Introduction to Programming (ET 142) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (ET 342) courses requirements at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA, a similar sustainability-focused project-based learning approach can also be applied successfully in other courses at different levels of engineering and technology programs at other academic institutions. Many studies have been conducted on the implementation of alternative assessments on students. However, this study is carried out to explore definitions, characteristics and students' perceptions of alternative assessment at university and school level. A total of one hundred and seventeen (117) journal articles were searched through different search engines, and only twenty-six (24) recent and relevant publications published between years 2002 to 2018 were included in this study and remaining are excluded. Among inclusions, there were ten (10) quantitative researches, six (6) qualitative, seven (7) mix-mode and one (1) review paper. The overall respondents of the studies were two thousand eight hundred and seven (2807). Most of the studies were carried in Asian countries such as Indonesia, Iran, Turkey, Malaysia, Bosnia, Thailand and Egypt and some of the studies were conducted in the USA, UK, Scotland, and Netherlands. The finding reveals that the learners have a positive perception of implementing the alternative assessment. Furthermore, the findings of some studies revealed alternative assessment is preferable while other researches indicated the alternative assessment favorably. The paper focuses on ICT-enabled education and advanced Learning Management Systems (LMS) through introducing the concept of gamification on improving the learning processes of students in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in the Republic of North Macedonia, which has become a requirement due to the measures related to the COVID-19 crisis. The main goal of the research is to examine the practical implications of gamified systems on improving student motivation and engagement in distant learning processes. The research indicates that HEIs can benefit by implementing gamification in their higher educational processes, especially prevalent when LMS are involved. In line with other research on the field, the paper brings new data and conclusions applicable for the country of interest, as well as the more expanded Balkan region. As the research focuses on primary data through case study and questionnaires, it moves forward the discussion on implementing gamification systems in the learning processes for students at a tertiary level, with significant improvement to student motivation, habits and participation in class even on a short term-basis. Higher education institutions (HEI) have undergone fundamental changes driven by ICT developments, globalisation, and the advent of socio-constructivist pedagogic approaches. As a result, within the UK, capital investment in new and retrofitted facilities has reached a record expenditure. Recent research on user-related evaluations of facilities, particularly in HEI learning spaces, highlights the prevalence of evaluations dominated by reductionist approaches focused on measuring outcomes, on users, such as satisfaction, learning outcomes or engagement. These approaches have a major pitfall, neglecting the complexity of the dynamic relationships between people, spaces, technology, institutional structure and pedagogic practices. In response, this paper aims to propose a shift on current approaches by exploring the application of sociotechnical systems theory to learning space design and evaluation. Amid these, it is argued that Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) offers promising alternatives to inform design and management of higher education learning spaces. Finally, within the paper, three CWA interventions are proposed and discussed, focusing on how these address previously identified shortcomings of predominant approaches used in HEI learning space design and evaluation. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to provide some insights on current industry internship practices and the perceptions of students during their internship experience. This paper also highlights some issues pertaining to internship from the students' and the industry's perspective Design/methodology/approach: The paper utilises qualitative research methodology using in-depth interviews. Findings: The sources of conflict arising between the two parties need to be addressed carefully so as to create a win–win situation. The contribution of universities, knowledge and innovation to development has moved to the foreground of national and regional policy and practice. More successful nations and regions show a close alignment between knowledge policy and socio-economic development. However, in peripheral regions, this link is less well articulated for place-based development. This paper interrogates this relationship within the South African and Eastern Cape regional context. Using core tenets from the learning region concept, I show how the role of knowledge has gained significant traction in the national knowledge and development policy landscape. Using evidence from the broader Amathole region in the Eastern Cape, I highlight some of the challenges within the knowledge-development policy nexus. In the main, weak knowledge and social capabilities undermine place-based innovation, interactive learning and ultimately development. The paper concludes that although the University of Fort Hare can serve as a development agent in the region, a continuously reflexive and engaged policy making process of learning, networking and institutional embeddedness is critical. In the profession of the Social Worker, where social contexts and social relations are matters of work, it is necessary to argue about the value of the internship as an integral part of university training. The situated work allows to reduce the gap between theory and reality, enabling the student to effectively understand the ethical principles of the profession, the development of an intercultural communicative competence, and the implementation of reflective action. Social relationships, imbued with emotional flows, allow the development of empathy, the deconstruction of the mental constructs, with which the individual interprets the world, and the constitution of a plastic forma mentis able to interact in the perspective of mutual growth with the other. The formative response of the Social Worker, a profession in which social relations are the conditio sine qua non of the social work itself, is contained within what wants to be defined, in this paper, as pedagogy of complexity -- a theoretical, practical and relational triad. Technological momentum is pushing colleges to digitize materials, courses, and classrooms, but screen-based learning is not as effective for students in remedial writing classes. The differences between how students read on paper and screen, the distractions and difficulties of screens, the haptics of writing and their contribution to reading and learning, and the necessity for annotation and proofreading make paper and pens the most effective tools for rebuilding low level and basic literacy while moving towards proficiency. As the facilitators of literacy, college professors teaching remedial courses become gatekeepers, and they must not allow the digital wave to wash them towards inferior pedagogies and teaching materials when their students' ability to stay in college and to move in the world as fully literate adults is at stake. The University of Scranton is one of the 28 Jesuit institutions of higher education located in the United States. Committed to community engagement and the development of Ignatian educators, a Community-Based Learning (CBL) Faculty Fellows Program was implemented academic year 2022-2023. The Ignatian pedagogical paradigm and the Engagement of Hope framework were used as models to develop, implement, and assess a CBL faculty development program. Program activities were designed to build faculty skills, capacities, and their identity as community-engaged practitioners. Lessons learned through program assessment on the impact on faculty's transformation to Ignatian educators and their ability to imagine new possibilities and a hope-filled future through community-engaged work are discussed. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the ongoing discussion on best practices to engage faculty in the use of Ignatian pedagogy at Jesuit universities using a CBL Faculty Fellows Program. These scoping reviews challenge the dissonance between policies on the delivery of spiritual care (SC) to clients in institutions and the education required to perform that delivery. The authors discovered a paucity of literature relating to Scotland regarding healthcare support workers' SC education and little more regarding that for nurses. There were various gaps in the understanding of SC, planning in the curriculum for SC and subsequent learning by students. The conclusion of this article is that as SC is embedded in human rights policy and government health and social care standards, the educational and professional governing bodies should be responsible for ensuring that SC features in all healthcare training, which should include SC assessment in the curriculum as a way of learning and endorsing knowledge. This paper describes the research and practice on the reforming of the examination method of engineering graphics at Zhejiang University. Based on the theory of standardizing general examinations and emphasizing key examinations, a new combined examination method of multiple modes has been explored and practised. The examination modes include unified large-scale examination mode, interviewing mode, additional score mode by designing an object or writing a paper, and do-it-yourself mode, i.e. self-questioning, self-answering and self-evaluating. Benjamin Bloom had proposed three hierarchical models used to classify educational learning objectives (of the learner) into levels of complexity and specificity. These three models are cognitive (knowledge-based), affective (emotion-based), and psychomotor (action-based). The objective of this paper is to discover the outcome-based education mechanism to observe the transformation from LOTs to HOTs through unconventional teaching and learning practices in context with IT education that can be beneficial for teachers, students, and higher education institutions. Authors have explored the Cognitive model (knowledge-based), which is used to decide learners' competency with six different levels. These levels are: Remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. The former three levels are categorized in Lower order thinking skills (LOT), and the latter three are in higher-order thinking skills (HOT). A learner can upgrade competency by navigating various levels from LOT to HOT in particular. Bloom's Taxonomy (BT) competencies also indicate the probability of securing a leaner's employment. In this paper, the authors propose an outcome-based education mechanism to observe the transformation from LOTs to HOTs through unconventional teaching and learning practices in context with IT education. The results suggest a significant improvement in the educational practices and insights for educational stakeholders and policymakers. This transformation aims to create subject interest among learners and ensure a minimum gap between teaching and learning (short-term goal). The purpose of this paper was to highlight the implications and challenges of Universities as learning organizations in Nigeria. Purpose: This study aims to explore an interdisciplinary pedagogical approach for advancing knowledge and understanding of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) at higher education institutions (HEIs). Design/methodology/approach: This qualitative study conducted an explorative experiment to elaborate on forms to advance a pedagogical approach that embeds sustainability. The design of the pedagogical project was explorative and interdisciplinary, using a predefined framework on key competencies for sustainability. Findings: The findings showed that an interdisciplinary approach can create a learning setting that stimulates students' problem-solving competencies for sustainability-related issues. Students were trained in the five key sustainable competencies addressed by Wiek et al. (2011). Moreover, although it is not always possible to arrange an interdisciplinary pedagogical setting, this might be a key condition for the development of students' key competencies regarding their understanding of the SDGs. Addressing the SDGs from an interdisciplinary perspective paved the way for the development of students' strategic competencies, including systems thinking and anticipatory competencies. Practical implications: The pedagogical project, as an interdisciplinary explorative experiment, was shown to be a potentially suitable method to counteract "cherry-picking" approaches to teaching the SDGs at HEI. Originality/value: The pedagogical approach advanced in this paper, extends active learning and interdisciplinarity in higher education. This trend is also present in higher education because higher education institutions and institutes increasingly rely on the use of modern information-communication technologies in their operations. The effects of the use of personal computers, the Internet and global social networks are multiple in the higher education system as well. In the process of acquiring new knowledge, developing creativity, as well as ensuring greater activity in the process of education, new learning technologies, with the use of multimedia systems, created the prerequisites for the engagement of all individual and collective resources. The most important source of the state's competitive advantage is the ability to educate and retain highly educated personnel in the field of information technologies. From that aspect, the paper discusses information technologies as a scientific discipline and general conditions for education in the field of information technologies. The impact of technical and pedagogical changes on education in this area is analyzed with particular attention. It is known that information technologies are suitable for vocational education, and the modern environment sets specific requirements regarding the applicability of knowledge acquired in higher education institutions. The dynamic and turbulent market emphasizes the applicability of knowledge as a key requirement in the educational process. These short researches propose new educational modules that should structure teaching in the field of information technologies in accordance with the global demand in this sector. Every society strives for a more efficient and economical system of education, and therefore the issue of the use of new information technologies in education comes down to the problem of creating a theoretically ideal model of the use of these technologies at all levels of education and work. Objectives: This paper evaluates an Australian curriculum of health administration postgraduate program and its applicability to the workplace. Methods: This study adopted a cross-sectional design. Between January and April 2020, invitations to complete an anonymous online survey were emailed to a total of 250 Master of Health Administration (MHA) alumni who completed their course at an Australian University between 2014 and 2019. Results: A total of 44 alumni participated in the survey. Half (50%) of the respondents were female, the majority of whom (77%) were under the age of 45 years, while 63% of the participants were enrolled part time and undertook their studies in a blended mode. More than half of those responding indicated that MHA improved their strategic thinking (54%), planning (52%), and process development (48%), in addition to their ability to meet goals (48%) and perform data interpretation (45%). Resilience (39%), emotional thinking (36%), and flexibility (27%) scored lower. More than 80% of those who responded stated that they received a promotion (89%) or secured an increased income (86%) as a result of their MHA completion. Conclusion: This study finds that a mix of basic and advanced knowledge of subjects such as project management, health resources management, data analysis, and human resources management to be relevant and highly applicable to the workplace. Provision of flexibility of subjects' delivery for health administration should be encouraged to allow for the diversity and the changes in health services while maintaining the core requirements needed for health managers' competencies. Although learning analytics benefit learning, its uptake by higher educational institutions remains low. Adopting learning analytics is a complex undertaking, and higher educational institutions lack insight into how to build organizational capabilities to successfully adopt learning analytics at scale. This paper describes the ex-post evaluation of a capability model for learning analytics via a mixed-method approach. The model intends to help practitioners such as program managers, policymakers, and senior management by providing them a comprehensive overview of necessary capabilities and their operationalization. Qualitative data were collected during pluralistic walk-throughs with 26 participants at five educational institutions and a group discussion with seven learning analytics experts. Quantitative data about the model's perceived usefulness and ease-of-use was collected via a survey (n = 23). The study's outcomes show that the model helps practitioners to plan learning analytics adoption at their higher educational institutions.
