The aim of this pilot study is to evaluate the relevance of the use of history in mathematics education. This paper presents an experiment carried out in France with sixth-grade students (n=108) in which an ancient number system is used, an approach that is commonly suggested in French sixth-grade textbooks but has previously been unassessed. Based on the data of a pretest and a post-test surrounding an activity on an ancient Chinese numeration system, a statistical analysis using Rasch modeling shows a specific added value of the history of mathematics for students with low abilities in mathematics. For these students, a significant increase in observed abilities of +0.67 logit in mean is measured with a large effect size (Cliff delta +0.52). This effect is then weighted by considering the regression to the mean (RTM) effect, leading to a value around +0.14 logit in mean and a negligible effect size (Cliff delta +0.10). So, this pilot study shows the important effect of RTM, which suggests a very strong rebalancing of students' results. In the last part of the paper, we discuss how RTM can nonetheless be positively interpreted in this specific context where students' disorientation is one of the purposes of history in mathematics education.

This study focuses on a case study that highlights the mathematical discourse developed by two pairs of students when dealing with a specific transition task, i.e., an activity leading to the construction of a graph of a function based on the exploration of another representation of the same function. Such a task was designed to work on the "transition beyond" that involves moving from the graph of a function in a dynamic geometry environment to the Cartesian graph of the same function in the paper-and-pencil environment. In this case study, I analyze in fine-grained detail the discourse developed by two pairs of high-school students (ages 15-16) and describe how they translate the dynamism of the proposed representation into the paper-based context. The analysis aims at investigating the potentialities of transition tasks for supporting the building of bridges between multiple representations of the same function. The analysis also showcased the important role dragging routines played for making the transition.

Mathematical memes are an Internet phenomenon with an epistemic potential noteworthy for the teaching and learning of mathematics. The aim of this paper is to conceptualize this phenomenon on an empirical base, elucidating its educational potential. To pursue this goal, a two-year ethnographic research study has been conducted in a selection of social media communities that exchange mathematical memes. In the paper, a twofold theoretical lens is used to investigate the phenomenon from a memetic perspective focused on the general characteristics of Internet memes, and from a cultural perspective considering the Web 2.0 environment. Analysis tools derived from the memetic and cultural theoretical background are applied to an instrumental case study, to reconstruct how mathematical memes activate the interaction among members of an online community. The investigation elicits key characteristics of the phenomenon, provides grounds to conceptualize mathematical memes as hybrid representations of mathematical statements, and sheds light on the traits of the epistemic culture they establish in the community.

Teachers' and students' values influenced the teaching and learning process in the mathematics classroom. Few studies were conducted to compare teachers' and students' value in mathematics learning. This paper explores Malaysian mathematics teachers' and students' values in mathematics learning. Fifty-three mathematics teachers and 354 secondary school students participated in the online survey. This study reports ten semantic differential items and an open-ended question related to mathematics learning. An independent t-test was conducted on the semantic differential items. Thematic coding analysis was performed to code the open-ended questions based on the framework of three intersecting values: mathematical values (the discipline), mathematics educational values (the pedagogy), and general educational values (the ethical and moral principles). The findings showed significant mean differences in mathematics educational values between teachers and students. No significant difference was found in mathematical values between teachers and students. Moreover, the qualitative data confirmed the similarities in mathematical values and differences in mathematics educational values between teachers and students. The current study also discusses possible reasons for the differences in teachers' and students' values. The findings imply that teachers' and students' values are crucial in enhancing teaching and learning in the mathematics classroom.

We report on a series of task-based interviews in which nine mathematicians were asked to evaluate a series of six mathematical arguments, purportedly produced either by fellow mathematicians or undergraduate students. In this paper, we attend to the role of context in mathematicians' responses, leading to four themes in expectations when evaluating the proofs that they read. First, mathematicians' evaluations of identical arguments were sensitive to researchers' manipulation of authorship, with most accepting arguments purportedly produced by a colleague while taking a more critical view of that same argument if produced by an undergraduate student. Our thematic analysis of interview responses led to three context-based factors influencing mathematicians' responses when evaluating student-produced texts: "course goals, instructors' expectations, and assessment type." In the final section, we consider implications for researchers focused on understanding common practice amongst mathematicians as well as the pedagogic consequences of our findings for practice in the classroom.

Mathematics was considered to be a universal language that God used to write the book of nature. Many of the greatest mathematicians (such as Descartes, Leibniz, Euler, Cantor) saw their mathematical work as a way to have a clearer insight into the existence of God and His infinity, as well as to glorify His name. This paper explores the mathematics-theology relation in the works of some of the greatest mathematicians from the fifteenth century to the present day. It also discusses how this information could be used to introduce the investigation of the reality of mathematics as divine language in the mathematics curricula of Catholic universities and colleges. At advanced levels, students need to understand Mathematics not only as a secular subject of technical utility, but also as a rich culture in which ideas of transcendence can be explored.

Understanding the intricate quantifier relations in the formal definitions of both convergence and continuity is highly relevant for students to use these definitions for mathematical reasoning. However, there has been limited research about how students relearn previous school mathematics for understanding multiply quantified statements. This issue was investigated in a case study in a 5-week teaching unit, located in a year-long transition course, in which students were engaged in defining and proving sequence convergence and local continuity. The paper reports on four substantial changes in the ways students relearn school mathematics for constructing quantified statements: (1) endorse predicate as formal property by replacing metaphors of epsilon strips with narratives about the objects [epsilon], N[subscript epsilon], and |a[subscript n] - a|; (2) acknowledge that statements have truth values; (3) recognize that multiply quantified statements are deductively ordered and that the order of its quantifications is relevant; and (4) assemble multiply quantified statements from partial statements that can be investigated separately. These four changes highlight how school mathematics enables student to semantically and pragmatically parse multiply quantified statements and how syntactic considerations emerge from such semantic and pragmatic foundations. Future research should further investigate how to design learning activities that facilitate students' syntactical engagement with quantified statements, for instance, in activities of using formal definitions of limits during proving.

Mathematical modelling has been included in many mathematics curricula worldwide, and China's curricula are no exception. The development of modelling competencies has recently been listed among the Chinese mathematics curriculum's six key objectives. However, the manner in which nationwide learning and teaching of modelling should be conducted presents a key challenge to China's schools, most of which are wholly lacking in experience of this practice. In this study we present a thematic analysis of the conceptions of four mathematicians, five mathematics educators and seven mathematics teachers, with regard to the learning and teaching of modelling. The results show that the participants' views of modelling can be categorised and linked to the following theoretical perspectives of modelling: applied, epistemological, educational, pedagogical and conceptual perspectives. Interestingly, the mathematicians and mathematics educators tended towards the atomistic approach to the learning and teaching of modelling, while the mathematics teachers placed greater emphasis on the holistic approach. The mathematicians and mathematics educators stressed student autonomy, while the teachers emphasised teacher demonstration. All participants considered group work to be an appropriate means of conducting modelling learning and teaching. Additionally, some teachers were concerned that modelling could not be incorporated into mathematical teaching and learning if it could not be included in high-stakes examinations. The paper concludes with a discussion on the rationale behind the existence of the various conceptions and the potential insights that may be drawn from these conceptions.

In this paper, the construct of 'uncertainty' in professional mathematics is investigated in relation to mathematical creativity. Specific focus is on 'Big C' research mathematicians' conceptions of what uncertainty means and ways in which it influences their research. Based on the hypothesis that uncertainty is both a catalyst and a necessary condition for creativity, a qualitative research design was used to obtain and analyze data from a 4-year study involving 18 research mathematicians who were at the forefront of their research domains. Data analysis using analytic induction confirmed the hypothesis that uncertainty plays an important role as a catalyst of mathematical creativity. The emergent categories from qualitative analysis revealed a dialectic or tension between (1) logic versus heuristics (synthetic versus analytic), (2) learner-researcher and researcher-learner transition, (3) axiom tweaking versus constraints. The findings of the study indicate that textbooks, unexpected moments, risk taking, and a community of support play a crucial role and characterize the interplay of uncertainty with mathematical creativity. The schema for understanding the dialectics of uncertainty sheds new light on an hitherto unexplored aspect of mathematical creativity, namely, uncertainty, vital for the development of mathematicians as researchers in addition to the growth of their discipline.

In this paper, we examine mathematicians' views on the value of advanced mathematics for secondary mathematics teachers. The data comprise semi-structured interviews with 24 mathematicians from 10 universities. The findings indicate that the value of advanced mathematics courses for prospective secondary mathematics teachers lies in their potential to offer connections across mathematical domains, mathematical experience for the development of problem-solving abilities, and increased epistemological awareness of the subject. Additionally, mathematicians' examples that connect advanced and school mathematics are presented and discussed. While the mathematicians provided rich examples of such connections, we noted that such examples were relatively scarce and accordingly sought possible explanations in the discussion of the findings.

In the disciplines of dance and mathematics, binary identities commonly split individuals into either (non)dance and/or (non)math people. However, these shorthand assessments become dangerous because they constrain disciplinary knowledge, and limiting one's identity and capabilities remains antithetical to broad education goals. Capitalizing on dance as a situated, embodied form of knowledge, as well as an engaging, interactive, and social endeavor, we facilitate instruction that uses a dance-based approach to teach geometric transformations in a teacher education program. In this paper, we discuss findings from a case study intervention in a graduate-level geometry education course where we engaged participants in this transformations dance activity. We ask: What disciplinary practices did participants use in a dance-based intervention on geometric transformations? And, how did they use them? We found that the parallel disciplinary practices that the participants engaged in, in dance and mathematics, sheds light on a need in education to resist binary identities and to encourage inquiry-based practices. We aim to inspire future professional development and collaborative teaching opportunities for dance teachers in math and math teachers in dance, along with research that investigates intersections of learning, practice, and identity, particularly in dance + math.

Shulman (1986) conceptualized pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) at the intersection of content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge. In this paper, I re-explore the intersection of content--in our case, mathematics--and pedagogy, not in terms of domains of knowledge, but in terms of domains of practice. I conceptualize, describe, and exemplify what ideas at the intersection of mathematical practices and pedagogical practices might mean--which I refer to as pedagogical mathematical practices (PMPs)--and then explore what the potential implications for such a construct might be in teacher education, and how it might be useful for, and used by, the field.

Research on instructional quality has been of great interest for several decades, leading to an immense and diverse body of literature. However, due to different definitions and operationalisations, the picture of what characteristics are important for instructional quality is not entirely clear. Therefore, in this paper, a scoping review was performed to provide an overview of existing evidence of both generic and subject-didactic characteristics with regard to student performance. More precisely, this paper aims to (a) identify both generic and subject-didactic characteristics affecting student performance in mathematics in secondary school, (b) cluster these characteristics into categories to show areas for quality teaching, and (c) analyse and assess the effects of these characteristics on student performance to rate the scientific evidence in the context of the articles considered. The results reveal that teaching characteristics, and not just the instruments for recording the quality of teaching as described in previous research, can be placed on a continuum ranging from generic to subject-didactic. Moreover, on account of the inconsistent definition of subjectdidactic characteristics, the category of 'subject-didactic specifics' needs further development to establish it as a separate category in empirical research. Finally, this study represents a further step toward understanding the effects of teaching characteristics on student performance by providing an overview of teaching characteristics and their effects and evidence. A steward of the discipline was originally defined as an individual to whom "we can entrust the vigor, quality, and integrity of the field", and more specifically, as "someone who will creatively generate new knowledge, critically conserve valuable and useful ideas, and responsibly transform those understandings through writing, teaching, and application" [8]. Originally articulated for doctoral education, in 2019 the construct of stewardship was expanded so that it can also be applied to non-academic practitioners in any field, and can be initiated earlier than doctoral education [18]. In this paper we apply this construct to the context of mathematics and argue that even for those early in their training in mathematics, stewardly practice of mathematics can be introduced and practiced. Postsecondary and tertiary education in mathematics -- for future mathematicians as well as those who will use math at work -- can include curriculum-spanning training, and documented achievement in stewardship. Even before a formal ethical practice standard for mathematics is developed and deployed to help inculcate math students with a "tacit responsibility for the quality and integrity of their own work", higher education can begin to shape student attitudes towards stewardly professional identities. Learning objectives to accomplish this are described, to assist math instructors in facilitating the recognition and acceptance of responsibility for the quality and integrity of their own work and that of colleagues in the practice of mathematics. The purpose of this paper was to examine current mathematics interventions designed for students in kindergarten through eighth grade to determine how often they incorporated the five strands of mathematical proficiency identified by the National Research Council (2001). The five strands are conceptual understanding, procedural knowledge, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, and productive disposition. A systematic review of the literature resulted in 13 meta‐analyses of that studied a total of 19 unique interventions. The five strands of mathematical proficiency were then compared to each intervention to determine with which strand(s) the intervention aligned. None of the 19 interventions contained all five strands, but interventions could be combined to enhance math proficiency. The strands of mathematics proficiency could provide a framework with which to meaningfully combine intervention components. HIGHLIGHTS: A review of 19 math interventions found that none of them addressed all five strands of proficiency, and it would require combinations of them to do so. During the past 20 years, numerous studies examining the use of problem posing in mathematics instruction have documented positive outcomes in terms of students' problem-solving skills, creativity, and attitudes and beliefs regarding the study of mathematics. However, despite these promising results, problem posing in mathematics instruction has rarely been studied in the population of students with learning disabilities (LD). This study describes a problem-posing intervention that draws on an existing Conceptual Model–based Problem-Solving program (COMPS, Xin) into the problem posing task. The COMPS-based problem posing intervention is designed to teach word problem posing skills to students with LDs under structured posing situations. The study used a multiple baseline across participants design and found the intervention was effective in improving students' problem solving and posing skills. It provided implications for future research and teaching regarding the use of problem posing interventions in mathematics for students with LDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several universities are witnessing an increase in students' enrolment in mathematics-intensive programmes over the last decades. This increase has come with the price of high failure rates in foundational mathematics courses, which poses challenges to mathematics teaching and learning in higher education. It is therefore inevitable, for some universities, to transform the teaching and learning of mathematics to more student-centred approaches that engage the students mathematically and enhance their success rates. We approach this transformative effort by investigating students' perception of teaching, feedback, and assessment as a first step in reforming the teaching of a first-year mathematics course at a Norwegian university. The results of both quantitative and qualitative analyses of the data generated using a questionnaire from 107 (80 men) engineering students show that the status quo of teachings offers little support for learning. The teaching is dominated by teacher-led instruction, note-taking, and large pieces of proof which make learning difficult for students during class activities. The results also show that the current structure of the course offers limited formative feedback to students and that the assessment tasks require restructuring to capture students' time and effort. In this study, a mobile learning system (MLS) was developed and adopted to facilitate elementary second-grade students to learn mathematics. A quasi-experimental design was adopted. There were two learning models, including the typical instruction group (TI group) and MLS group. The learning content is the topic of multiplication. A total of 93 s-grade students from four classes in a public elementary school in Northern Taiwan participated in this research. Participants were randomly divided into the MLS group (47 participants: 22 boys and 25 girls) and the TI group (46 participants: 26 boys and 20 girls). Participants in the MLS group received mathematics instruction in the MLS, whereas those in the TI group received direct instruction in typical classrooms. All students took the pretest and posttest of mathematics learning achievement test and mathematics learning interest scale assess their improvement of learning achievement and learning interest after the learning activities. The findings revealed that students in the MLS group had significantly better improvement in their mathematics learning interest and mathematics learning achievement than those in the TI group. In addition, students in the MLS group had significantly better performance in answering items of comprehension and application levels in the mathematics learning achievement test.
