In many applications, top-k query is an important operation to return a set of interesting points in a potentially huge data space. It is analyzed in this paper that the existing algorithms cannot process top- k query on massive data efficiently. This paper proposes a novel table-scan-based T2S algorithm to efficiently compute top-k results on massive data. T2S first constructs the presorted table, whose tuples are arranged in the order of the round-robin retrieval on the sorted lists. T2S maintains only fixed number of tuples to compute results. The early termination checking for T2S is presented in this paper, along with the analysis of scan depth. The selective retrieval is devised to skip the tuples in the presorted table which are not top-k results. The theoretical analysis proves that selective retrieval can reduce the number of the retrieved tuples significantly. The construction and incremental-update/batch-processing methods for the used structures are proposed in this paper. Given a network with groups, such as a contact-network grouped by ages, which are the best groups to immunize to control the epidemic? Equivalently, how to choose best communities in social media like Facebook to stop rumors from spreading? Immunization is an important problem in multiple different domains like epidemiology, public health, cyber security, and social media. Additionally, clearly immunization at group scale (like schools and communities) is more realistic due to constraints in implementations and compliance (e.g., it is hard to ensure specific individuals take the adequate vaccine). Hence, efficient algorithms for such a “group-based” problem can help public-health experts take more practical decisions. However, most prior work has looked into individual-scale immunization. In this paper, we study the problem of controlling propagation at group scale. We formulate a set of novel Group Immunization problems for multiple natural settings (for both threshold and cascade-based contagion models under both node-level and edge-level interventions) and develop multiple efficient algorithms, including provably approximate solutions. Frequent sequence mining is well known and well studied problem in datamining. The output of the algorithm is used in many other areas like bioinformatics, chemistry, and market basket analysis. Unfortunately, the frequent sequence mining is computationally quite expensive. In this paper, we present a novel parallel algorithm for mining of frequent sequences based on a static load-balancing. The static load-balancing is done by measuring the computational time using a probabilistic algorithm. For reasonable size of instance, the algorithms achieve speedups up to $\approx 3/4\cdot P$ where $P$ is the number of processors. In the experimental evaluation, we show that our method performs significantly better then the current state-of-the-art methods. In a peer-to-peer system, a node should estimate reputation of other peers not only on the basis of its own interaction, but also on the basis of expression of other nodes. Reputation aggregation mechanism implements strategy for achieving this. Reputation aggregation in peer to peer networks is generally a very time and resource consuming process. Moreover, most of the methods consider that a node will have the same reputation after aggregation with all the nodes in the network, which is not true. This paper proposes a reputation aggregation algorithm that uses a variant of gossip algorithm called differential gossip. In this paper, estimate of reputation is considered to be having two parts, one common component which is same with every node, and the other one is the information received from immediate neighbours based on the neighbours’ direct interaction with the node. The differential gossip is fast and requires a lesser amount of resources. This mechanism allows computation of independent reputation value by every node, of every other node in the network. The differential gossip trust has been investigated for a power law network formed using preferential attachment (PA) Model. The reputation computed using differential gossip trust shows good amount of immunity to the collusion. Real social networks contain many communities, where members within each community are densely connected with each other, while they are sparsely connected with the members outside of the community. Since each member can join multiple communities simultaneously, communities in social networks are usually overlapping with each other. How to efficiently and effectively identify overlapping communities in a large social network becomes a fundamental problem in the big data era. Most existing studies on community finding focused on non-overlapping communities based on several well-known community fitness metrics. However, recent investigations have shown that these fitness metrics may suffer free rider and separation effects where the overlapping region of two communities always belongs to the denser one, rather to both of them. In this paper, we study the overlapping community detection problem in social networks that not only takes the quality of the found overlapping communities but also incorporate both free rider and separation effects on the found communities into consideration. Specifically, in this paper, we first propose a novel community fitness metric - triangle based fitness metric, for overlapping community detection that can minimize the free rider and separation effects on found overlapping communities, and show that the problem is NP-hard. We then propose an efficient yet scalable algorithm for the problem that can deliver a feasible solution. We finally validate the effectiveness of the proposed fitness metric and evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, through conducting extensive experiments on real-world datasets with over 100 million vertices and edges. This paper presents a novel Fourier analysis-based approach to combine, transmit, and visualize decision trees in a mobile environment. Fourier representation of a decision tree has several interesting properties that are particularly useful for mining data streams from small mobile computing devices connected through limited-bandwidth wireless networks. This paper presents algorithms to compute the Fourier spectrum of a decision tree and outlines a technique to construct a decision tree from its Fourier spectrum. It offers a framework to aggregate decision trees in their Fourier representations. The problem of counting triangles in graphs has been well studied in the literature. However, all existing algorithms, exact or approximate, spend at least linear time in the size of the graph (except a recent theoretical result), which can be prohibitive on today's large graphs. Nevertheless, we observe that the ideas in many existing triangle counting algorithms can be coupled with random sampling to yield potentially sublinear-time algorithms that return an approximation of the triangle count without looking at the whole graph. This paper makes these random sampling algorithms more explicit, and presents an experimental and analytical comparison of different approaches, identifying the best performers among a number of candidates. Social hierarchy (i.e., pyramid structure of societies) is a fundamental concept in sociology and social network analysis. The importance of social hierarchy in a social network is that the topological structure of the social hierarchy is essential in both shaping the nature of social interactions between individuals and unfolding the structure of the social networks. The social hierarchy found in a social network can be utilized to improve the accuracy of link prediction, provide better query results, rank web pages, and study information flow and spread in complex networks. In this paper, we model a social network as a directed graph G, and consider the social hierarchy as DAG (directed acyclic graph) of G, denoted as GD. By DAG, all the vertices in G can be partitioned into different levels, the vertices at the same level represent a disjoint group in the social hierarchy, and all the edges in DAG follow one direction. The main issue we study in this paper is how to find DAG GD in G. The approach we take is to find GD by removing all possible cycles from G such that G=U(G)∪GD, where U(G) is a maximum Eulerian subgraph which contains all possible cycles. We give the reasons for doing so, investigate the properties of GD found, and discuss the applications. In addition, we develop a novel two-phase algorithm, called Greedy-&-Refine, which greedily computes an Eulerian subgraph and then refines this greedy solution to find the maximum Eulerian subgraph. We give a bound between the greedy solution and the optimal. The quality of our greedy approach is high. We conduct comprehensive experimental studies over 14 real-world datasets. We provide techniques that enable a scalable so-called Volunteered Geographic Services system. This system targets the increasing populations of online mobile users, e.g., smartphone users, enabling such users to provide location-based services to each other, thus enabling citizen reporter or citizen as a sensor scenarios. More specifically, the system allows users to register as service volunteers, or micro-service providers, by accepting service descriptions and periodically updated locations from such volunteers; and the system allows users to subscribe to notifications of available, nearby relevant services by accepting subscriptions, formalized as continuous queries, that take service preferences and user locations as arguments and return relevant services. Services are ranked according to their relevance and distance to a query, and the highest ranked services are returned. The key challenge addressed is that of scalably providing up-to-date results to queries when the query locations change continuously. This is achieved by the proposal of a new so-called safe-zone model. With safe zones, query results are accompanied by safe zones with the property that a query result remains the same for all locations in its safe zone. Then, query users need only notify the system when they exit their current safe zone. Existing safe-zone models fall short in the papers setting. The new model is enabled by (i) weighted and (ii) set weighted imprecise Voronoi cells. In many scientific and commercial domains, we encounter flexibility objects, i.e., objects with explicit flexibilities in a time and an amount dimension (e.g., energy or product amount). Applications of flexibility objects require novel and efficient techniques capable of handling large amounts of such objects while preserving flexibility. Hence, this paper formally defines the concept of flexibility objects (flex-objects) and provides a novel and efficient solution for aggregating and disaggregating flex-objects. Out of the broad range of possible applications, this paper will focus on smart grid energy data management and discuss strategies for aggregation and disaggregation of flex-objects while retaining flexibility. This paper further extends these approaches beyond flex-objects originating from energy consumption by additionally considering flex-objects originating from energy production and aiming at energy balancing during aggregation. In more detail, this paper considers the complete life cycle of flex-objects: aggregation, disaggregation, associated requirements, efficient incremental computation, and balance aggregation techniques. This paper focuses on the problem of short text summarization on the comment stream of a specific message from social network services (SNS). Due to the high popularity of SNS, the quantity of comments may increase at a high rate right after a social message is published. Motivated by the fact that users may desire to get a brief understanding of a comment stream without reading the whole comment list, we attempt to group comments with similar content together and generate a concise opinion summary for this message. Since distinct users will request the summary at any moment, existing clustering methods cannot be directly applied and cannot meet the real-time need of this application. In this paper, we model a novel incremental clustering problem for comment stream summarization on SNS. Moreover, we propose IncreSTS algorithm that can incrementally update clustering results with latest incoming comments in real time. Furthermore, we design an at-a-glance visualization interface to help users easily and rapidly get an overview summary. From extensive experimental results and a real case demonstration, we verify that IncreSTS possesses the advantages of high efficiency, high scalability, and better handling outliers, which justifies the practicability of IncreSTS on the target problem. Existing main-memory hash join algorithms for multi-core can be classified into two camps. Hardware-oblivious hash join variants do not depend on hardware-specific parameters. Rather, they consider qualitative characteristics of modern hardware and are expected to achieve good performance on any technologically similar platform. The assumption behind these algorithms is that hardware is now good enough at hiding its own limitations—through automatic hardware prefetching, out-of-order execution, or simultaneous multi-threading (SMT)—to make hardware-oblivious algorithms competitive without the overhead of carefully tuning to the underlying hardware. Hardware-conscious implementations, such as (parallel) radix join , aim to maximally exploit a given architecture by tuning the algorithm parameters (e.g., hash table sizes) to the particular features of the architecture. The assumption here is that explicit parameter tuning yields enough performance advantages to warrant the effort required. This paper compares the two approaches under a wide range of workloads (relative table sizes, tuple sizes, effects of sorted data, etc.) and configuration parameters (VM page sizes, number of threads, number of cores, SMT, SIMD, prefetching, etc.). The results show that hardware-conscious algorithms generally outperform hardware-oblivious ones. However, on specific workloads and special architectures with aggressive simultaneous multi-threading, hardware-oblivious algorithms are competitive. The main conclusion of the paper is that, in existing multi-core architectures, it is still important to carefully tailor algorithms to the underlying hardware to get the necessary performance. The multiple longest common subsequence (MLCS) problem, related to the identification of sequence similarity, is an important problem in many fields. As an NP-hard problem, its exact algorithms have difficulty in handling large-scale data and time- and space-efficient algorithms are required in real-world applications. To deal with time constraints, anytime algorithms have been proposed to generate good solutions with a reasonable time. However, there exists little work on space-efficient MLCS algorithms. In this paper, we formulate the MLCS problem into a graph search problem and present two space-efficient anytime MLCS algorithms, SA-MLCS and SLA-MLCS. SA-MLCS uses an iterative beam widening search strategy to reduce space usage during the iterative process of finding better solutions. Based on SA-MLCS, SLA-MLCS, a space-bounded algorithm, is developed to avoid space usage from exceeding available memory. SLA-MLCS uses a replacing strategy when SA-MLCS reaches a given space bound. Experimental results show SA-MLCS and SLA-MLCS use an order of magnitude less space and time than the state-of-the-art approximate algorithm MLCS-APP while finding better solutions. Compared to the state-of-the-art anytime algorithm Pro-MLCS, SA-MLCS and SLA-MLCS can solve an order of magnitude larger size instances. Outlier detection is an important task in data mining, with applications ranging from intrusion detection to human gait analysis. With the growing need to analyze high speed data streams, the task of outlier detection becomes even more challenging as traditional outlier detection techniques can no longer assume that all the data can be stored for processing. While the well-known Local Outlier Factor (LOF) algorithm has an incremental version, it assumes unbounded memory to keep all previous data points. In this paper, we propose a memory efficient incremental local outlier (MiLOF) detection algorithm for data streams, and a more flexible version (MiLOF_F), both have an accuracy close to Incremental LOF but within a fixed memory bound. Our experimental results show that both proposed approaches have better memory and time complexity than Incremental LOF while having comparable accuracy. In addition, we show that MiLOF_F is robust to changes in the number of data points, the number of underlying clusters and the number of dimensions in the data stream. These results show that MiLOF/MiLOF_F are well suited to application environments with limited memory (e.g., wireless sensor networks), and can be applied to high volume data streams. Abstract-Spatial PrObabilistic Temporal (SPOT) databases are a paradigm for reasoning with probabilistic statements about where a vehicle may be now or in the future. They express statements of the form "Object O is in spatial region R at some time t with some probability in the interval [L, U]." Past work on SPOT databases has developed selection operators based on selecting SPOT atoms that are entailed by the SPOT database-we call this `cautious" selection. In this paper, we study several problems. First, we note that the runtime of consistency checking and cautious selection algorithms in past work is influenced greatly by the granularity of the underlying Cartesian space. In this paper, we first introduce the notion of "optimistic" selection, where we are interested in returning all SPOT atoms in a database that are consistent with respect to a query, rather than having an entailment relationship. We then develop an approach to scaling SPOT databases that has three main contributions: 1) We develop methods to eliminate variables from the linear programs used in past work, thus greatly reducing the size of the linear programs used-the resulting advances apply to consistency checking, optimistic selection, and cautious selection. 2) We develop a host of theorems to show how we can prune the search space when we are interested in optimistic selection. 3) We use the above contributions to build an efficient index to execute optimistic selection queries over SPOT databases. Our approach is superior to past work in two major respects: First, it makes fewer assumptions than all past works on this topic except that in [30]. Data mining techniques have been widely used in various applications. However, the misuse of these techniques may lead to the disclosure of sensitive information. Researchers have recently made efforts at hiding sensitive association rules. Nevertheless, undesired side effects, e.g., nonsensitive rules falsely hidden and spurious rules falsely generated, may be produced in the rule hiding process. In this paper, we present a novel approach that strategically modifies a few transactions in the transaction database to decrease the supports or confidences of sensitive rules without producing the side effects. Since the correlation among rules can make it impossible to achieve this goal, in this paper, we propose heuristic methods for increasing the number of hidden sensitive rules and reducing the number of modified entries. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our approach, i.e., undesired side effects are avoided in the rule hiding process. The results also report that in most cases, all the sensitive rules are hidden without spurious rules falsely generated. This paper presents a new type of fuzzy sets, called ‘Hierarchical Fuzzy Sets,’ that apply when the considered domain of values is not ‘flat,’ but contains values that are more specific than others according to the ‘kind of’ relation. We study the properties of such fuzzy sets, that can be defined in a short way on a part of the hierarchy, or exhaustively (by their ‘closure’) on the whole hierarchy. We show that hierarchical fuzzy sets form equivalence classes in regard to their closures and that each class has a particular representative called ‘minimal fuzzy set.’ We propose a use of this minimal fuzzy set for query enlargement purposes and, thus, present a methodology for hierarchical fuzzy set generalization. In multilabel learning, each instance in the training set is associated with a set of labels and the task is to output a label set whose size is unknown a priori for each unseen instance. In this paper, this problem is addressed in the way that a neural network algorithm named BP-MLL, i.e., Backpropagation for Multilabel Learning, is proposed. It is derived from the popular Backpropagation algorithm through employing a novel error function capturing the characteristics of multilabel learning, i.e., the labels belonging to an instance should be ranked higher than those not belonging to that instance. Applications to two real-world multilabel learning problems, i.e., functional genomics and text categorization, show that the performance of BP-MLL is superior to that of some well-established multilabel learning algorithms. In this paper, we present Trust-χ, a comprehensive XML-based [12] framework for trust negotiations, specifically conceived for a peer-to-peer environment. Trust negotiation is a promising approach for establishing trust in open systems like the Internet, where sensitive interactions may often occur between entities at first contact, with no prior knowledge of each other. The framework we propose takes into account all aspects related to negotiations, from the specification of the profiles and policies of the involved parties to the selection of the best strategy to succeed in the negotiation. Trust-χ presents a number of innovative features, such as the support for protection of sensitive policies, the use of trust tickets to speed up the negotiation, and the support of different strategies to carry on a negotiation. With the rapid development of mobile devices and crowdsourcing platforms, the spatial crowdsourcing has attracted much attention from the database community. Specifically, the spatial crowdsourcing refers to sending location-based requests to workers, based on their current positions. In this paper, we consider a spatial crowdsourcing scenario, in which each worker has a set of qualified skills, whereas each spatial task (e.g., repairing a house, decorating a room, and performing entertainment shows for a ceremony) is time-constrained, under the budget constraint, and required a set of skills. Under this scenario, we will study an important problem, namely multi-skill spatial crowdsourcing (MS-SC), which finds an optimal worker-and-task assignment strategy, such that skills between workers and tasks match with each other, and workers’ benefits are maximized under the budget constraint. We prove that the MS-SC problem is NP-hard and intractable. Therefore, we propose three effective heuristic approaches, including greedy, g-divide-and-conquer and cost-model-based adaptive algorithms to get worker-and-task assignments. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our MS-SC processing approaches on both real and synthetic data sets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many commercial products and academic research activities are embracing behavior analysis as a technique for improving detection of attacks of many sorts—from retweet boosting, hashtag hijacking to link advertising. Traditional approaches focus on detecting dense blocks in the adjacency matrix of graph data, and recently, the tensors of multimodal data. No method gives a principled way to score the suspiciousness of dense blocks with different numbers of modes and rank them to draw human attention accordingly. In this paper, we first give a list of axioms that any metric of suspiciousness should satisfy; we propose an intuitive, principled metric that satisfies the axioms, and is fast to compute; moreover, we propose CROSSSPOT, an algorithm to spot dense blocks that are worth inspecting, typically indicating fraud or some other noteworthy deviation from the usual, and sort them in the order of importance (“suspiciousness”). Finally, we apply CROSSSPOT to the real data, where it improves the F1 score over previous techniques by 68 percent and finds suspicious behavioral patterns in social datasets spanning 0.3 billion posts. Max-flow has been adopted for semi-supervised data modelling, yet existing algorithms were derived only for the learning from static data. This paper proposes an online max-flow algorithm for the semi-supervised learning from data streams. Consider a graph learned from labelled and unlabelled data, and the graph being updated dynamically for accommodating online data adding and retiring. In learning from the resulting non stationary graph, we augment and de-augment paths to update max-flow with a theoretical guarantee that the updated max-flow equals to that from batch retraining. For classification, we compute min-cut over current max-flow, so that minimized number of similar sample pairs are classified into distinct classes. A representative skyline contains k skyline points that can represent its corresponding full skyline. The existing measuring criteria of k representative skylines are specifically designed for static data, and they cannot effectively handle streaming data. In this paper, we focus on the problem of calculating the k representative skyline over data streams. First, we propose a new criterion to choose k skyline points as the k representative skyline for data stream environments, termed the k largest dominance skyline (k-LDS), which is representative to the entire data set and is highly stable over the streaming data. Second, we propose an efficient exact algorithm, called Prefix-based Algorithm (PBA), to solve the k-LDS problem in a 2-dimensional space. The time complexity of PBA is only O((M −k ) × k) where M is the size of the full skyline set. Third, the k-LDS problem for a d -dimensional (d ≥ 3) space turns out to be very complex. Therefore, a greedy algorithm is designed to answer k-LDS queries. To further accelerate the calculation, we propose a ϵ-greedy algorithm which can achieve an approximate factor of ...(...). Experimental results on both synthetic and real-world data show that our k-LDS significantly outperforms its competitors in data stream environments. Due to the fact that existing database systems are increasingly more difficult to use, improving the quality and the usability of database systems has gained tremendous momentum over the last few years. In particular, the feature of explaining why some expected tuples are missing in the result of a query has received more attention. In this paper, we study the problem of explaining missing answers to top-k queries in the context of SQL (i.e., with selection, projection, join, and aggregation). To approach this problem, we use the query-refinement method. That is, given as inputs the original top-k SQL query and a set of missing tuples, our algorithms return to the user a refined query that includes both the missing tuples and the original query results. Community detection is an important task in network analysis. A community (also referred to as a cluster) is a set of cohesive vertices that have more connections inside the set than outside. In many social and information networks, these communities naturally overlap. For instance, in a social network, each vertex in a graph corresponds to an individual who usually participates in multiple communities. In this paper, we propose an efficient overlapping community detection algorithm using a seed expansion approach. The key idea of our algorithm is to find good seeds, and then greedily expand these seeds based on a community metric. Within this seed expansion method, we investigate the problem of how to determine good seed nodes in a graph. In particular, we develop new seeding strategies for a personalized PageRank clustering scheme that optimizes the conductance community score. An important step in our method is the neighborhood inflation step where seeds are modified to represent their entire vertex neighborhood. Experimental results show that our seed expansion algorithm outperforms other state-of-the-art overlapping community detection methods in terms of producing cohesive clusters and identifying ground-truth communities. Recently, map services (e.g., Google maps) and location-based online social networks (e.g., Foursquare) attract a lot of attention and businesses. With the increasing popularity of these location-based services, exploring and characterizing points of interests (PoIs) such as restaurants and hotels on maps provides valuable information for applications such as start-up marketing research. Due to the lack of a direct fully access to PoI databases, it is infeasible to exhaustively search and collect all PoIs within a large area using public APIs, which usually impose a limit on the maximum query rate. In this paper, we propose sampling methods to accurately estimate PoI statistics such as sum and average aggregates from as few queries as possible. Query processing over uncertain data has gained growing attention, because it is necessary to deal with uncertain data in many real-life applications. In this paper, we investigate skyline queries over uncertain data in distributed environments (DSUD query) whose research is only in an early stage. The state-of-the-art algorithm, called e-DSUD algorithm, is designed for processing this query. It has the desirable characteristics of progressiveness and minimum bandwidth consumption. However, it still needs to be perfected in three aspects. (1) Progressiveness. Each time it only returns one query result at most. (2) Efficiency. There are a significant amount of redundant I/O cost and numerous iterations which causes a long total query time. (3) Universality. It is restricted to the case where local skyline tuples are incomparability. To address these concerns, we first present a detailed analysis of the e-DSUD algorithm and then develop an improved framework for the DSUD query, namely IDSUD. Based on the new framework, we propose an adaptive algorithm, called ADSUD, for the DSUD query. In the algorithm, we redefine the approximate global skyline probability and choose local representative tuples due to minimum probabilistic bounding rectangle adaptively. Furthermore, we design a progressive pruning method and apply the reuse mechanism to improve its efficiency. Classification problems in high dimensional data with a small number of observations are becoming more common especially in microarray data. During the last two decades, lots of efficient classification models and feature selection (FS) algorithms have been proposed for higher prediction accuracies. However, the result of an FS algorithm based on the prediction accuracy will be unstable over the variations in the training set, especially in high dimensional data. This paper proposes a new evaluation measure Q-statistic that incorporates the stability of the selected feature subset in addition to the prediction accuracy. Then, we propose the Booster of an FS algorithm that boosts the value of the Q-statistic of the algorithm applied. Empirical studies based on synthetic data and 14 microarray data sets show that Booster boosts not only the value of the Q-statistic but also the prediction accuracy of the algorithm applied unless the data set is intrinsically difficult to predict with the given algorithm. This paper explores combinatorial optimization for problems of max-weight graph matching on multi-partite graphs, which arise in integrating multiple data sources. In the most common two-source case, it is often desirable for the final matching to be one-to-one; the database and statistical record linkage communities accomplish this by weighted bipartite graph matching on similarity scores. Such matchings are intuitively appealing: they leverage a natural global property of many real-world entity stores—that of being nearly deduped—and are known to provide significant improvements to precision and recall. Unfortunately, unlike the bipartite case, exact max-weight matching on multi-partite graphs is known to be NP-hard. Our two-fold algorithmic contributions approximate multi-partite max-weight matching: our first algorithm borrows optimization techniques common to Bayesian probabilistic inference; our second is a greedy approximation algorithm. In addition to a theoretical guarantee on the latter, we present comparisons on a real-world entity resolution problem from Bing significantly larger than typically found in the literature, on publication data, and on a series of synthetic problems. Our results quantify significant improvements due to exploiting multiple sources, which are made possible by global one-to-one constraints linking otherwise independent matching sub-problems. The structural graph clustering algorithm SCAN is a fundamental technique for managing and analyzing graph data. However, its high runtime remains a computational bottleneck, which limits its applicability. In this paper, we propose a novel interactive approach for tackling this problem on multicore CPUs. Our algorithm, called anySCAN, iteratively processes vertices in blocks. The acquired results are merged into an underlying cluster structure consisting of the so-called super-nodes for building clusters. During its runtime, anySCAN can be suspended for examining intermediate results and resumed for finding better results at arbitrary time points, making it an anytime algorithm which is capable of handling very large graphs in an interactive way and under arbitrary time constraints. Moreover, its block processing scheme allows the design of a scalable parallel algorithm on shared memory architectures such as multicore CPUs for speeding up the algorithm further at each iteration. Consequently, anySCAN uniquely is a both interactive and work-efficient parallel algorithm. We further introduce danySCAN an efficient bulk update scheme for anySCAN on dynamic graphs in which the clusters are updated in bulks and in a parallel interactive scheme. Experiments are conducted on very large real graph datasets for demonstrating the performance of anySCAN. They show its ability to acquire very good approximate results early, leading to orders of magnitude speedup compared to SCAN and its variants. Collective entity disambiguation, or collective entity linking aims to jointly resolve multiple mentions by linking them to their associated entities in a knowledge base. Previous works are primarily based on the underlying assumption that entities within the same document are highly related. However, the extent to which these entities are actually connected in reality is rarely studied and therefore raises interesting research questions. For the first time, this paper shows that the semantic relationships between mentioned entities within a document are in fact less dense than expected. This could be attributed to several reasons such as noise, data sparsity, and knowledge base incompleteness. As a remedy, we introduce MINTREE, a new tree-based objective for the problem of entity disambiguation. The key intuition behind MINTREE is the concept of coherence relaxation which utilizes the weight of a minimum spanning tree to measure the coherence between entities. Based on this new objective, we design Pair-Linking, a novel iterative solution for the MINTREE optimization problem. The idea of Pair-Linking is simple: instead of considering all the given mentions, Pair-Linking iteratively selects a pair with the highest confidence at each step for decision making. Via extensive experiments on eight benchmark datasets, we show that our approach is not only more accurate but also surprisingly faster than many state-of-the-art collective linking algorithms. In many popular applications like peer-to-peer systems, large amounts of data are distributed among multiple sources. Analysis of this data and identifying clusters is challenging due to processing, storage, and transmission costs. In this paper, we propose GDCluster, a general fully decentralized clustering method, which is capable of clustering dynamic and distributed data sets. Nodes continuously cooperate through decentralized gossip-based communication to maintain summarized views of the data set. We customize GDCluster for execution of the partition-based and density-based clustering methods on the summarized views, and also offer enhancements to the basic algorithm. Coping with dynamic data is made possible by gradually adapting the clustering model. Our experimental evaluations show that GDCluster can discover the clusters efficiently with scalable transmission cost, and also expose its supremacy in comparison to the popular method LSP2P. Advanced technology in GPS and sensors enables us to track physical events, such as human movements and facility usage. Periodicity analysis from the recorded data is an important data mining task which provides useful insights into the physical events and enables us to report outliers and predict future behaviors. To mine periodicity in an event, we have to face real-world challenges of inherently complicated periodic behaviors and imperfect data collection problem. Specifically, the hidden temporal periodic behaviors could be oscillating and noisy, and the observations of the event could be incomplete. In this paper, we propose a novel probabilistic measure for periodicity and design a practical algorithm, ePeriodicity, to detect periods. Our method has thoroughly considered the uncertainties and noises in periodic behaviors and is provably robust to incomplete observations. The massive collection of data via emerging technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) requires finding optimal ways to reduce the observations in the time series analysis domain. The IoT time series require aggregation methods that can preserve and represent the key characteristics of the data. In this paper, we propose a segmentation algorithm that adapts to unannounced mutations of the data (i.e., data drifts). The algorithm splits the data streams into blocks and groups them in square matrices, computes the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), and quantizes them. The key information is contained in the upper-left part of the resulting matrix. We extract this sub-matrix, compute the modulus of its eigenvalues, and remove duplicates. The algorithm, called BEATS, is designed to tackle dynamic IoT streams, whose distribution changes over time. We implement experiments with six datasets combining real, synthetic, real-world data, and data with drifts. Compared to other segmentation methods like Symbolic Aggregate approXimation (SAX), BEATS shows significant improvements. Trying it with classification and clustering algorithms it provides efficient results. BEATS is an effective mechanism to work with dynamic and multi-variate data, making it suitable for IoT data sources. Many pattern analysis and data mining problems have witnessed high-dimensional data represented by a large number of features, which are often redundant and noisy. Feature selection is one main technique for dimensionality reduction that involves identifying a subset of the most useful features. In this paper, a novel unsupervised feature selection algorithm, named clustering-guided sparse structural learning (CGSSL), is proposed by integrating cluster analysis and sparse structural analysis into a joint framework and experimentally evaluated. Nonnegative spectral clustering is developed to learn more accurate cluster labels of the input samples, which guide feature selection simultaneously. Meanwhile, the cluster labels are also predicted by exploiting the hidden structure shared by different features, which can uncover feature correlations to make the results more reliable. Row-wise sparse models are leveraged to make the proposed model suitable for feature selection. To optimize the proposed formulation, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted on 12 diverse benchmarks, including face data, handwritten digit data, document data, and biomedical data. The encouraging experimental results in comparison with several representative algorithms and the theoretical analysis demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for feature selection. Multi-label learning studies the problem where each example is represented by a single instance while associated with a set of labels simultaneously. During the past decade, significant amount of progresses have been made toward this emerging machine learning paradigm. This paper aims to provide a timely review on this area with emphasis on state-of-the-art multi-label learning algorithms. Firstly, fundamentals on multi-label learning including formal definition and evaluation metrics are given. Secondly and primarily, eight representative multi-label learning algorithms are scrutinized under common notations with relevant analyses and discussions. Top-k pairs and top-k objects queries have received significant attention by the research community. In this paper, we present the first approach to answer a broad class of top-k pairs and top-k objects queries over sliding windows. Our framework handles multiple top-k queries and each query is allowed to use a different scoring function, a different value of k, and a different size of the sliding window. Furthermore, the framework allows the users to define arbitrarily complex scoring functions and supports out-of-order data streams. For all the queries that use the same scoring function, we need to maintain only one K-skyband. We present efficient techniques for the K-skyband maintenance and query answering. We conduct a detailed complexity analysis and show that the expected cost of our approach is reasonably close to the lower bound cost. For top-k pairs queries, we demonstrate the efficiency of our approach by comparing it with a specially designed supreme algorithm that assumes the existence of an oracle and meets the lower bound cost. Many problems in natural language processing, data mining, information retrieval, and bioinformatics can be formalized as string transformation, which is a task as follows. Given an input string, the system generates the $k$ most likely output strings corresponding to the input string. This paper proposes a novel and probabilistic approach to string transformation, which is both accurate and efficient. The approach includes the use of a log linear model, a method for training the model, and an algorithm for generating the top $k$ candidates, whether there is or is not a predefined dictionary. The log linear model is defined as a conditional probability distribution of an output string and a rule set for the transformation conditioned on an input string. The learning method employs maximum likelihood estimation for parameter estimation. The string generation algorithm based on pruning is guaranteed to generate the optimal top $k$ candidates. The proposed method is applied to correction of spelling errors in queries as well as reformulation of queries in web search. Experimental results on large scale data show that the proposed approach is very accurate and efficient improving upon existing methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency in different settings. This paper designs an efficient image hashing with a ring partition and a nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF), which has both the rotation robustness and good discriminative capability. The key contribution is a novel construction of rotation-invariant secondary image, which is used for the first time in image hashing and helps to make image hash resistant to rotation. In addition, NMF coefficients are approximately linearly changed by content-preserving manipulations, so as to measure hash similarity with correlation coefficient. We conduct experiments for illustrating the efficiency with 346 images. Our experiments show that the proposed hashing is robust against content-preserving operations, such as image rotation, JPEG compression, watermark embedding, Gaussian low-pass filtering, gamma correction, brightness adjustment, contrast adjustment, and image scaling. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve comparisons are also conducted with the state-of-the-art algorithms, and demonstrate that the proposed hashing is much better than all these algorithms in classification performances with respect to robustness and discrimination. Measuring similarity between objects is a fundamental task in domains such as data mining, information retrieval, and so on. Link-based similarity measures have attracted the attention of many researchers and have been widely applied in recent years. However, most previous works mainly focus on introducing new link-based measures, and seldom provide theoretical as well as experimental comparisons with other measures. Thus, selecting the suitable measure in different situations and applications is difficult. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis and critical comparison of various link-based similarity measures and algorithms are presented. Their strengths and weaknesses are discussed. Their actual runtime performances are also compared via experiments on benchmark data sets. Skyline is an important operation in many applications to return a set of interesting points from a potentially huge data space. Given a table, the operation finds all tuples that are not dominated by any other tuples. It is found that the existing algorithms cannot process skyline on big data efficiently. This paper presents a novel skyline algorithm SSPL on big data. SSPL utilizes sorted positional index lists which require low space overhead to reduce I/O cost significantly. The sorted positional index list $(L_j)$ is constructed for each attribute $(A_j)$ and is arranged in ascending order of $(A_j)$. SSPL consists of two phases. In phase 1, SSPL computes scan depth of the involved sorted positional index lists. During retrieving the lists in a round-robin fashion, SSPL performs pruning on any candidate positional index to discard the candidate whose corresponding tuple is not skyline result. Phase 1 ends when there is a candidate positional index seen in all of the involved lists. In phase 2, SSPL exploits the obtained candidate positional indexes to get skyline results by a selective and sequential scan on the table. Classification algorithms used to support the decisions of human analysts are often used in settings in which zero-one loss is not the appropriate indication of performance. The zero-one loss corresponds to the operating point with equal costs for false alarms and missed detections, and no option for the classifier to leave uncertain test samples unlabeled. A generalization bound for ensemble classification at the standard operating point has been developed based on two interpretable properties of the ensemble: strength and correlation, using the Chebyshev inequality. Such generalization bounds for other operating points have not been developed previously and are developed in this paper. Significantly, the bounds are empirically shown to have much practical utility in determining optimal parameters for classification with a reject option, classification for ultralow probability of false alarm, and classification for ultralow probability of missed detection. Counter to the usual guideline of large strength and small correlation in the ensemble, different guidelines are recommended by the derived bounds in the ultralow false alarm and missed detection probability regimes. The exemplar-based data clustering problem can be formulated as minimizing an energy function defined on a Markov random field (MRF). However, most algorithms for optimizing the MRF energy function cannot be directly applied to the task of clustering, as the problem has a high-order energy function. In this paper, we first show that the high-order energy function for the clustering problem can be simplified as a pairwise energy function with the metric property, and consequently it can be optimized by the $(\alpha)$-expansion move algorithm based on graph cut. Then, the original expansion move algorithm is improved in the following two aspects: 1) Instead of solving a minimal s-t graph cut problem, we show that there is an explicit and interpretable solution for minimizing the energy function in the clustering problem. Based on this interpretation, a fast $(\alpha)$-expansion move algorithm is proposed, which is much more efficient than the graph-cut-based algorithm. 2) The fast $(\alpha)$-expansion move algorithm is further improved by extending its move space so that a larger energy value reduction can be achieved in each iteration. Experiments on benchmark data sets show that the enhanced expansion move algorithm has a better performance, compared to other state-of-the-art exemplar-based clustering algorithms. The string similarity join is a basic operation of many applications that need to find all string pairs from a collection given a similarity function and a user-specified threshold. Recently, there has been considerable interest in designing new algorithms with the assistant of an inverted index to support efficient string similarity joins. These algorithms typically adopt a two-step filter-and-refine approach in identifying similar string pairs: 1) generating candidate pairs by traversing the inverted index; and 2) verifying the candidate pairs by computing the similarity. However, these algorithms either suffer from poor filtering power (which results in high verification cost), or incur too much computational cost to guarantee the filtering power. In this paper, we propose a multiple prefix filtering method based on different global orderings such that the number of candidate pairs can be reduced significantly. We also propose a parallel extension of the algorithm that is efficient and scalable in a MapReduce framework. We conduct extensive experiments on both centralized and Hadoop systems using both real and synthetic data sets, and the results show that our proposed approach outperforms existing approaches in both efficiency and scalability. At the core of graph mining lies independent expansion of substructures where a substructure (also referred to as a subgraph) independently grows into a number of larger substructures in each iteration. Such an independent expansion, invariably, leads to the generation of duplicates. In the presence of graph partitions, duplicates are generated both within and across partitions. Eliminating these duplicates (for correctness) not only incurs generation and storage cost but also additional computation for its elimination. Our primary aim is to design techniques to reduce generating duplicate substructures as we show that they cannot be eliminated. This paper introduces three constraint-based optimization techniques, each significantly improving the overall mining cost by reducing the number of duplicates generated. These alternatives provide flexibility to choose the right technique based on graph properties. We establish theoretical correctness of each technique as well as its analysis with respect to graph characteristics such as degree, number of unique labels, and label distribution. We also investigate the applicability of their combination for improvements in duplicate reduction. Finally, we discuss the effects of the constraints with respect to the partitioning schemes used in graph mining. Our experiments demonstrate significant benefits of these constraints in terms of storage, computation, and communication cost (specific to partitioned approaches) across graphs with varied characteristics. Crowdsourcing has been shown to be effective in a wide range of applications, and is seeing increasing use. A large-scale crowdsourcing task often consists of thousands or millions of atomic tasks, each of which is usually a simple task such as binary choice or simple voting. To distribute a large-scale crowdsourcing task to limited crowd workers, a common practice is to pack a set of atomic tasks into a task bin and send to a crowd worker in a batch. It is challenging to decompose a large-scale crowdsourcing task and execute batches of atomic tasks, which ensures reliable answers at a minimal total cost. Large batches lead to unreliable answers of atomic tasks, while small batches incur unnecessary cost. In this paper, we investigate a general crowdsourcing task decomposition problem, called the Smart Large-scAle task DE composer (SLADE) problem, which aims to decompose a large-scale crowdsourcing task to achieve the desired reliability at a minimal cost. We prove the NP-hardness of the SLADE problem and propose solutions in both homogeneous and heterogeneous scenarios. For the homogeneous SLADE problem, where all the atomic tasks share the same reliability requirement, we propose a greedy heuristic algorithm and an efficient and effective approximation framework using an optimal priority queue (OPQ) structure with provable approximation ratio. For the heterogeneous SLADE problem, where the atomic tasks can have different reliability requirements, we extend the OPQ-based framework leveraging a partition strategy, and also prove its approximation guarantee. The skyline of a data point set is made up of the best points in the set, and is very important for multi-criteria decision making. In these years, the skyline problem attracts more and more attention, and many variants of the traditional skyline emerge in the database field. One recent and important variant is group-based skyline, which aims to find the best groups of points in a given set. In this paper, we bring forward an efficient approach, called minimum dominance search (MDS), to solve the g-skyline problem, a latest group-based skyline problem. MDS consists of two steps: In the first step, we construct a novel g-skyline support structure, i.e., minimum dominance graph (MDG), which proves to be a minimum g-skyline support structure. In the second step, we search for g-skyline groups based on the MDG through two searching algorithms, and a skyline-combination based optimization strategy is employed to improve these two algorithms. We conduct comprehensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world data sets, and show that our algorithms are orders of magnitude faster than the state-of-the-art in most cases. Finding the shortest path in road networks becomes one of important issues in location based services (LBS). The problem of finding the optimal meeting point for a group of users has also been well studied in existing works. In this paper, we investigate a new problem for two users. Each user has his/her own source and destination. However, whether to meet before going to their destinations is with some uncertainty. We model it as minimum path pair ( MPP) query, which consists of two pairs of source and destination and a user-specified weight $\alpha$ to balance the two different needs. The result is a pair of paths connecting the two sources and destinations respectively, with minimal overall cost of the two paths and the shortest route between them. To solve MPP queries, we devise algorithms by enumerating node pairs. We adopt a location-based pruning strategy to reduce the number of node pairs for enumeration. An efficient algorithm based on point-to-point shortest path calculation is proposed to further improve query efficiency. We also give two fast approximate algorithms with approximation bounds. In this paper, we research the community deception problem. Tackling this problem consists in developing techniques to hide a target community (\mathcalC ) from community detection algorithms. This need emerges whenever a group (e.g., activists, police enforcements, or network participants in general) want to observe and cooperate in a social network while avoiding to be detected. We introduce and formalize the community deception problem and devise an efficient algorithm that allows to achieve deception by identifying a certain number ($\beta$ ) of \mathcalC ’s members connections to be rewired. Deception can be practically achieved in social networks like Facebook by friending or unfriending network members as indicated by our algorithm. We compare our approach with another technique based on modularity. By considering a variety of (large) real networks, we provide a systematic evaluation of the robustness of community detection algorithms to deception techniques. Recent progress in Internet of Things (IoT) platforms has allowed us to collect large amounts of sensing data. However, there are significant challenges in converting this large-scale sensing data into decisions for real-world applications. Motivated by applications like health monitoring and intervention and home automation we consider a novel problem called Activity Prediction, where the goal is to predict future activity occurrence times from sensor data. In this paper, we make three main contributions. First, we formulate and solve the activity prediction problem in the framework of imitation learning and reduce it to a simple regression learning problem. This approach allows us to leverage powerful regression learners that can reason about the relational structure of the problem with negligible computational overhead. Second, we present several metrics to evaluate activity predictors in the context of real-world applications. Third, we evaluate our approach using real sensor data collected from 24 smart home testbeds. We also embed the learned predictor into a mobile-device-based activity prompter and evaluate the app for nine participants living in smart homes.
