Ensuring the longevity of web-based information is a significant preservation issue with wide implications for the future of scholarship. This paper describes a longitudinal study of fifty websites through which the determination of survival rates of Australian web publications is attempted. This paper reports on the outcomes of research assessing the nature and extent of print journal cancellations by Australian research libraries since 1990. The cancellation activity of two groups of libraries, one representing the national and state library sector and the other the university library sector, was examined. These two groups were tested for their cancellation of both Australian and international journals. From the results some conclusions are reached about the factors driving the cancellations and the implications these cancellations might have for the nation's access to scholarly journal literature. The development of the conceptual 'Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records' (FRBR) Model enables records to be considered in terms of contextual relationships. Developments in software can capitalise on this to significantly improve the display of works through surfacing of these relationships. One aspect of a wider ongoing longitudinal study of 'Research and researchers in school librarianship' is discussed here. Research articles and conference papers published in English over the ten-year period 1991 to 2000 in the field of school librarianship were analysed to identify the country of the research, the type of publication in which the research was reported, the research methods used, and the aspects of school librarianship that were investigated. Changes and trends in the research at the international level through the decade are described, and compared to the research related to school librarianship in Australia. AEShareNet is a collaborative system to streamline the licensing of intellectual property so that Australian training materials are developed, shared and adapted efficiently. AEShareNet went live in February 2002: its history is reviewed here to illustrate the many strands in the provision of an online system in the context of the national vocational education and training system and to move practitioners from traditional paper-based systems to the new world of online resource discovery and licensing. This account focuses particularly on information management and technical issues and addresses the need for consultation, user education and innovative organisational structures. The author reflects on working with Director-General of the National Library of Australia Harrison Bryan. He comments on Bryan's personality as approachable, willing to listen and suggest solutions to problems. He remarks that he never had to ask twice for a paper Bryan was responsible for. The author suggests that Bryan's professionalism shone during the recovery efforts after the fourth floor of the Australian National Library where asbestos removal was taking place.
