​This volume provides an overview of the ways sustainable development issues as a whole, and the SDGs in particular, are perceived and practiced in a variety of countries in the Latin America and Caribbean region. It also discusses the extent to which its many socio-economic problems hinder progresses towards the pursuit of a sustainable future, and documents successful experiences from across the region.This book is part of the'100 papers to accelerate the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals initiative'.

This volume is a collection of papers that address multiple issues of contemporary Turkish politics, presented at the “Contemporary Turkey at a Glance: Turkey Transformed? Globalization and unemployment are two phenomena which are amongst the most widely discussed subjects in the economic debate today. Often, globalization is regarded as being responsible for the increase in unemployment, particularly in unskilled labor. This book deals with the correlation between globalization and unemployment under various aspects: historical aspects of globalization, empirical trends and theoretical explanations of unemployment, effects of globalization in general and of European Monetary Union in particular on umemployment, labor market policy in a global economy, the impact of fiscal policy on unemployment in a global economy, as well as the effects of globalization on inflation and national stabilization policy.

This book examines the changing significance of intra-European labor mobility in the 21st century. The focus is on the driving forces, the labor market effects and the regulation of this mobility. It is shown that there is a demand for workers with different qualifications in the'post-industrial'societies of Western Europe. This demand is primarily met by migration from the enlarged EU. However, this is no longer traditional labor migration, but the mobility of EU citizens. This brings with it new opportunities, but also challenges in a transnational mobility space, which is also a space of inequality.

This book uses Norbert Elias and John L. Scotson's The Established and The Outsiders to map selected established-outsiders figurations in Poland after 1989. Looking at gender and sexual orientation, nationalism and patriotism, race and class, antifeminism and homophobia, elitist and populist imaginaries, religious and political ideals and ideologies, hate speech, and the crisis of the rule of law, this book tracks how inequalities are transformed into figurations of the have and the have-nots by way of spatial, symbolic and institutional exclusion. This edited collection is rooted in a socio-historical understanding of the trajectory of Polish society before and since the fall of Communism over thirty years ago, and a critical assessment of the dramatic turn that Polish society has taken since the beginning of the democratic backsliding in 2015.

Das Buch analysiert die Rolle von Indikatoren sowohl für die Messung von räumlichen Disparitäten als auch für die Steuerung kompensatorischer Interventionen des Staates. Indikatoren vermessen Raum typischerweise in einem territorialen Schema, was nicht unbedingt den durch Praktiken konstituierten Räumen entspricht. Der Band untersucht die Territorialpolitik staatlicher Akteure in den Politikfeldern Kommunalfinanzen, Bildungsinfrastruktur, Regionalförderung und Asylverwaltung primär am Beispiel Deutschlands. Er zeigt, dass Indikatoren nur in einigen dieser Politikfelder eine Schlüsselstellung erreicht haben.

This open access book constitutes a transnational and multidisciplinary inquiry of the most pressing challenges faced by young people Not in Employment, nor in Education or Training (NEET) in rural areas across Europe.. Rural NEETs are one of the most invisible segments of the youth population, in spite of the fact that the percentage of NEETs is higher in the countryside, compared to those in suburban and urban areas across the EU and many of the Southern and Eastern European countries. This book identifies and analyses different factors that may contribute to or hamper youth social development and social inclusion. Among them are main individual features of rural NEETs, the quality and characteristics of rural NEETs'informal social networks and support, the singularities of formal and non-formal education in rural areas and how they shape the transition from school to work, the role of employment services in providing adequate institutional support, the importance of policy package designor the role of new paradigms of rural development to uphold vulnerable young people in the European countryside. The contributions offered in this book provide a new model of analysis and comprehension of rural NEETs'personal development and social inclusion. Seit 2018 gibt es das Grundlagenwerk „Praxis der Sinus-Milieus® - eine autoritative Darstellung des Milieuansatzes von SINUS und dessen Anwendungsmöglichkeiten, also eine Publikation, die die Gültigkeit der Sinus-Milieus im Kontext der soziokulturellen Dynamik begründet, ihre Aktualität in Zeiten von Digitalisierung und Globalisierung untermauert und ihren Nutzwert für Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft wie für den institutionellen Bereich deutlich macht.Diese Grundsatzveröffentlichung ist jetzt komplett überarbeitet, aktualisiert und ergänzt worden. Much ink has been spilled on poverty measurements and trends, at the expense of revealing causality. Assembling multi-disciplinary and international contributions, this book shows that a causal understanding of poverty in rich and poor countries is essential. That understanding must be based on a critical interrogation of the wider social relations which set up the mechanisms producing poverty as an outcome. In den vergangenen drei Jahrzehnten sind die Anteile befristeter Beschäftigungsverhältnisse bei jungen Erwachsenen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und in anderen spätkapitalistischen Gesellschaften deutlich angestiegen. But social science reveals the true human cost of this policy. The Covid Consensus provides an internationalist-left perspective on the world's Covid-19 response, which has had devastating consequences for democratic rights and the poor worldwide. As the fortunes of the richest soared, nationwide shutdowns devastated small businesses, the working classes and the Global South's informal economies. Gender-based violence surged, and the mental health of young people was severely compromised. Meanwhile, unprecedented health restrictions prevented participation in daily life without proof of vaccination. Toby Green and Thomas Fazi argue that these policies grossly exacerbated existing trends of inequality, mediatization and surveillance, with grave implications for the future. This open access book critically examines discussions on digitalisation and individual opportunities for socio-economic advancement. Contrary to the prevailing narratives of “digital empowerment” and opportunities for every individual, this book argues that digitalisation massively curtails social advancement opportunities, consolidating existing social relations. From a spatial perspective, Scheffer demonstrates how socially disadvantaged groups are faced with reproducing mechanisms as part of a new data economy. Surprisingly, the more intensively digital services are used, the more this happens.Building on Löw´s sociology of space and Bourdieu´s concept of habitus, this book shows how practices of social exclusion are transferred to the digital present in an innovative way. The image of “mirrored” spaces describes a new mechanism that explains social exclusion in the age of digitalisation. Since its existence in the 1950s, consumer policy in Germany has been understood and pursued primarily as a bundle of actions and measures initiated and institutionalised by the state. In many cases, the state has also issued corresponding mandates and set up support models, which has created the impression that we are basically dealing with a'consumer policy from above'imposed by macro-politics. Not that there have not been repeated attempts in the past decades to give impetus to consumer policy from the middle of civil society - often in the form of small citizens'initiatives. And in recent years in particular, a number of new consumer organisations have emerged which operate much closer to the grass roots. Nevertheless, the impression seems to have taken root among the large, government-related'players'in the field, who have been in the'business'for decades, not to mention government-internal consumer policy, that consumer policy concerns a policy field that is essentiallyordered by a collaboration of the state on the one hand, and consumer protection organisations representing all consumers equally on the other, while the many small consumer initiatives, not even started by individual committed consumers, regularly fall behind in comparison. This perspective refers largely to the view of and from the centre of politics. This volume is intended to go some way towards countering the institutionally prevailing impression that, in principle, there is only'consumer policy from above'that is really effective and assertive.The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. Das Buch stellt eine empirische Analyse der subjektiven Bedeutung von Armut und sozialer Aus-grenzung innerhalb eines gewandelten sozialstaatlichen Arrangements dar. Es zeigt auf, dass von Armut betroffene Menschen ständig damit konfrontiert sind, dass sie von ihren eigenen Idealen, Wünschen und Überzeugungen abweichen und diese nicht realisieren können. Zugleich wird gezeigt, dass die Entstehung und Etablierung von Hilfsangeboten der ‚Tafel‘ auf die Existenz von Armut innerhalb der bundesrepublikanischen Gesellschaft verweist und ein Symbol der Transformation des Sozialstaats darstellt. Während die Nutzer•innen der ‚Tafeln‘ auf die Hilfen angewiesen sind, versetzen diese sie zugleich jedoch nicht in der Lage, die Armutssituation zu überwinden.

Die Geschlechtersegregation am Arbeitsmarkt und die sich dadurch ergebenden Unterschiede zwischen Frauen und Männer in Hinblick auf Tätigkeitsfelder, Positionen, Stundenausmaß, Einkommen, Aufstiegschancen usw. sind in der sozial- und wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Forschung vielfach beleuchtet worden. This book calls for more holistic place-based action to address the social and environmental crisis, deploying the Deep Place approach as one contribution to the toolbox of actions that will underpin the UN Decade of Action towards the Sustainable Development Goals. The authors suggest that ‘place'is a critical window on how to conceive a resolution to the multiple and overlapping crises. As well as diagnosing the problem (the world as it is), this book also offers a normative advocacy (the world as it could/should be and proposed pathways to get there). A series of ‘Deep Place'case studies from the UK, Australia, and Vanuatu help to illustrate this approach. Ultimately, the book argues for the need for a real and green ‘new deal'and identifies what this should be like. It suggests that a new economic order, whilst eventually inevitable, requires radical change. This will not be easy but will be essential given the current impasse, caused, not least by the conjunction of carbon-based, neoliberal capitalism in crisis and the multifactorial global ecological crisis. Ultimately, it concludes that there is a need to develop a new model of ‘regenerative collectivism'to overcome these crises.This book will be of interest to academics, policy practitioners, and social and climate justice advocates/activists.

The anthology presents the social consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in the field of work and gainful employment from a multidisciplinary perspective of social and economic sciences. Specifically, it deals with the analysis of changes in work processes and relations in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Different facets of the discussion are taken up, and the topic of'work, precarity and COVID-19'is discussed along a wide range of diversity categories (age, gender, disability, social origin, ethnicity, religion, etc.) and their intersections (intersectionality). This open access book uses a rich data set, from individuals whose background profiles statistically predict strong cultural non-participation, to explore the most salient lifestyles and symbolic boundaries drawn in these potentially disengaged groups.The book departs from a theoretical framework in which cultural practices and cultural participation in their most visible and tangible form are seen as manifestations of cultural capital and power, to show empirically that people and groups dubbed passive in many policy documents and scholarly research are actually relatively active, both in terms of traditional cultural participation and different kinds of social and anthropological understandings of participation.

This book presents a unified approach to the problem of inequality, combining results from a variety of research fields – the human life cycle, group dynamics, networks, markets, and economic geography. Its main message is that inequality emerges as the natural result of mechanisms operating both in individual human development and in social interaction. It posits that inequality is not an anomalous deviation from a naturally egalitarian social structure; quite to the contrary, inequality is to be expected as part of the human condition. The author states that the growth of inequality, on the other hand, is not a natural law – the level and character of inequality can be affected by collective decisions. This perspective on human inequality has potentially far-reaching consequences both for the political philosophy of inequality and for public policy-making.This book is of interest to a wide interdisciplinary social science readership, including public policy, decisionsciences, economic geography, and life course studies.

Vor diesem Hintergrund bietet der Band eine Grundlage für die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema, indem er den Forschungsstand aus verschiedenen Disziplinen zusammenführt und systematisch aufarbeitet. Die Beiträge können als Ausgangspunkt für weitere Forschung dienen, sollen aber auch eine Übersetzung der Befunde der Rassismusforschung in Richtung Polizei leisten.

Diese Publikation untersucht „Transformationsprozesse am Fluchtort Stadt“, die sich vor und nach der verstärkten Fluchtzuwanderung im Untersuchungsraum Hamburg der Jahre 2015/2016 nachweisen lassen. Kenntnisleitend war dabei die Frage, inwiefern Flucht und Zuwanderung von Geflüchteten nicht mehr nur als vorübergehende und kurzfristige Phänomene betrachtet und als Reaktion auf einen „Ausnahmezustand“ gedacht werden, sondern auch auf institutionellen/strukturellen Ebenen Transformationen auslösen und deshalb in regulärer Stadtpolitik und Stadtentwicklung zu berücksichtigen sind.Der theoretische Zugang erfolgte entsprechend der interdisziplinären Ausrichtung des Projekts mit einer wechselseitigen Bezugnahme auf bildungstheoretische, stadtsoziologische und migrationstheoretische Überlegungen. Empirisch wurden zunächst Transformationsprozesse administrativer und institutioneller Strukturen und deren Spuren in den Lebenslagen Geflüchteter in den Blick genommen. Abschließend erfolgt eine kontrastierende Diskussion der Hamburger Befunde zu den vielfach bundesweit als vorbildlich beurteilten kommunalen Strategien und Praktiken des Umgangs mit Flucht•Migration in Schwäbisch Gmünd sowie eine Reflexion ethischer Fragen in der wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung von Flucht•Migration.

In diesem Buch wird der aktuelle Zustand der österreichischen Sozialpartnerschaft und ihrer Kontextbedingungen aus verschiedenen disziplinären Perspektiven (Soziologie, Politikwissenschaft,Rechtswissenschaft und Wirtschaftswissenschaft) in ausgewählten Bereichen beschrieben und diskutiert. Im Fokus stehen die Antworten sozialpartnerschaftlicher Akteure auf aktuelle gesellschaftliche, politische, rechtliche und wirtschaftliche Herausforderungen, wie etwa Digitalisierung, Transnationalisierung von Wertschöpfungsketten, ökologische Transformation, neue Formen der Beschäftigung, Arbeitsmigration und die Neuordnung der politischen Kräfteverhältnisse.

Vor dem Hintergrund eines expandierenden Privatschulsektors einerseits und der Konzeption der für allen gemeinsamen Grundschule andererseits untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit, ob private Grundschulen in Deutschland Bildungsungleichheiten verstärken. Betrachtet werden einerseits die Selektivität der Privatschulwahl und andererseits die Effekte, welche der Besuch einer privaten Grundschule auf die Kompetenzentwicklung hat. Beide Aspekte werden auf Basis von Daten des Nationalen Bildungspanels untersucht. Die Befunde weisen darauf hin, dass die Wahl einer privaten Grundschule insbesondere in städtischen Gebieten und in Ostdeutschland vom Bildungsniveau und vom kulturellen Kapital der Eltern abhängt. Wird die soziale Selektivität der Privatschulwahl berücksichtigt, zeigt sich kein Effekt privater Beschulung auf die Entwicklung von Lese- und Mathematikkompetenzen.

Der Band präsentiert aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse des Zentrums für Rechtsextremismusforschung, Demokratiebildung und gesellschaftliche Integration (KomRex) der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Saatgut steht im Zentrum eines Transformationsprozesses, der weltweit mehr als zwei Milliarden Menschen betrifft. In dieser Studie über Kleinbäuerinnen und Kleinbauern in Tansania wird untersucht, wie lokale Saatgutsysteme in den soziokulturellen Strukturen kleinbäuerlicher Lebenswelten verankert sind. Am Beispiel des Saatguts wird damit die enge Verwobenheit landwirtschaftlicher und sozialer Praxis nachgezeichnet und es wird herausgearbeitet, wie einzelne von außen herangetragene Modernisierungsprozesse weitreichende Konsequenzen für das kleinbäuerliche Zusammenleben nach sich ziehen. Die Studie liefert eine konkrete, detaillierte und differenzierende Darstellung des bäuerlichen Alltags sowie über den Umgang der kleinbäuerlichen Haushalte mit Saatgut. The COVID-19 pandemic and the global response to it have disrupted the daily lives of children in innumerable ways. These impacts have unfolded unevenly, as nation, race, class, sexuality, citizenship status, disability, housing stability, and other dimensions of power have shaped the ways in which children and youth have experienced the pandemic. COVID-19 and Childhood Inequality brings together a multidisciplinary group of child and youth scholars and practitioners who highlight the mechanisms and practices through which the COVID-19 pandemic has both further marginalized children and exacerbated childhood disparities. It challenges post-capitalist discourses of active ageing with a focus on restrictive end-of-career and retirement measures. This book looks at the background to the policy of free movement in Europe and discusses the consequences. European integration changed migration conditions considerably: Under the concept of'freedom of movement', border crossings between EU member states as well as work and settlement by nationals of other member states were largely facilitated; internal borders thus lost their significance. At the same time, the question of how to deal with a common external border and the migration of'third-country nationals'gained in importance. The essential explains why migration from outside Europe was increasingly understood as a problem of security policy and why this still determines the measures for designing a common external border today.

Getting Real About Inequality is a contributed reader for undergraduate courses in Race/Class/Gender, Social Inequality, or the Social Construction of Difference and Inequality. It gives instructors in these courses a set of materials to help them moderate civil, productive, and social science-based discussions with their students about social statuses and identities. Like the book it is modeled after, Getting Real About Race, it is organized around myths and stereotypes that students might already believe or be familiar with through the media or popular culture. A panel of expert contributors were enlisted to write short, accessible essays address the same questions (What is the myth or stereotype under investigation? How do we know that the myth or stereotype is widespread? What does the empirical data tell us?) and provide the same pedagogical features (a summary of the research data, discussion questions, suggestions for further study, suggested activities and assignments). All of pieces in the book employ an intersectional perspective, to help students see the nuanced mechanisms of power and inequality that are often lost in everyday discourse.
