In this book, the latest achievements of the computation time analysis theory and practical applications of intelligent algorithms are set out. This Festschrift volume, published in honor of Kurt Mehlhorn on the occasion of his 60th birthday, contains 28 papers written by his former Ph.D. students and colleagues as well as by his former Ph.D. advisor, Bob Constable. The volume's title is a translation of the title of Kurt Mehlhorn's first book,'Effiziente Algorithmen', published by Teubner-Verlag in 1977. This Festschrift demonstrates how the field of algorithmics has developed and matured in the decades since then. The papers included in this volume are organized in topical sections on models of computation and complexity; sorting and searching; combinatorial optimization with applications; computational geometry and geometric graphs; and algorithm engineering, exactness and robustness.

“Automatic Program Development” is a tribute to Robert Paige (1947-1999), our accomplished and respected colleague, and moreover our good friend, whose untimely passing was a loss to our academic and research community. We have collected the revised, updated versions of the papers published in his honor in the Higher-Order and Symbolic Computation Journal in the years 2003 and 2005. Among them there are two papers by Bob: (i) a retrospective view of his research lines, and (ii) a proposal for future studies in the area of the automatic program derivation. The book also includes some papers by members of the IFIP Working Group 2.1 of which Bob was an active member. All papers are related to some of the research interests of Bob and, in particular, to the transformational development of programs and their algorithmic derivation from formal specifications. “Automatic Program Development” offers a renewed stimulus for continuing and deepening Bob's research visions. A familiar touch is given to the book by some pictures kindly provided to us by his wife Nieba, the personal recollections of his brother Gary and some of his colleagues and friends.

Streaming problems are algorithmic problems that are mainly characterized by their massive input streams. Because of these data streams, the algorithms for these problems are forced to be space-efficient, as the input stream length generally exceeds the available storage. The goal of this study is to analyze the impact of additional information (more specifically, a hypothesis of the solution) on the algorithmic space complexities of several streaming problems. To this end, different streaming problems are analyzed and compared. The two problems “most frequent item” and “number of distinct items”, with many configurations of different result accuracies and probabilities, are deeply studied. Both lower and upper bounds for the space and time complexity for deterministic and probabilistic environments are analyzed with respect to possible improvements due to additional information. The general solution search problem is compared to the decision problem where a solution hypothesis has to be satisfied.

Motivation It is now possible to build powerful single-processor and multiprocessor systems and use them efficiently for data processing, which has seen an explosive ex­ pansion in many areas of computer science and engineering. One approach to meeting the performance requirements of the applications has been to utilize the most powerful single-processor system that is available. When such a system does not provide the performance requirements, pipelined and parallel process­ ing structures can be employed. The concept of parallel processing is a depar­ ture from sequential processing. In sequential computation one processor is in­ volved and performs one operation at a time. On the other hand, in parallel computation several processors cooperate to solve a problem, which reduces computing time because several operations can be carried out simultaneously. Using several processors that work together on a given computation illustrates a new paradigm in computer problem solving which is completely different from sequential processing. From the practical point of view, this provides sufficient justification to investigate the concept of parallel processing and related issues, such as parallel algorithms. Parallel processing involves utilizing several factors, such as parallel architectures, parallel algorithms, parallel programming lan­ guages and performance analysis, which are strongly interrelated. In general, four steps are involved in performing a computational problem in parallel. The first step is to understand the nature of computations in the specific application domain.

We investigate the proof theory, the model theory and some applications of reasoning with par­ tial information. We have as a goal a general theory for combining, in a principled way, logic formulae expressing partial information, and a logical tool for choosing among them for application and implementation purposes. We also would like to have a model theory for reasoning with partial infor­ mation that is a simple generalization of the usual Tarskian semantics for classical logic. We show the need to go beyond the view of logic as a geometry of static truths, and to see logic, both at the proof-theoretic and at the model-theoretic level, as a dynamics of processes. We see the dynamics of logic processes bear with classical logic, the same relation as the one existing between classical mechanics and Euclidean geometry.

This textbook provides an in depth course on data structures in the context of object oriented development. The emergence of massively par­ allel computers made these algorithms of practical interest. The best known algorithms in this class include evolutionary programming, genetic algorithms, evolution strategies, simulated annealing, classifier systems, and neural net­ works. Recently (1-3 October 1990) the University of Dortmund, Germany, hosted the First Workshop on Parallel Problem Solving from Nature [164]. This book discusses a subclass of these algorithms - those which are based on the principle of evolution (survival of the fittest). In such algorithms a popu­ lation of individuals (potential solutions) undergoes a sequence of unary (muta­ tion type) and higher order (crossover type) transformations. These individuals strive for survival: a selection scheme, biased towards fitter individuals, selects the next generation. After some number of generations, the program converges - the best individual hopefully represents the optimum solution. There are many different algorithms in this category. To underline the sim­ ilarities between them we use the common term'evolution programs'.

Genetic algorithms are founded upon the principle of evolution, i.e., survival of the fittest. Hence evolution programming techniques, based on genetic algorithms, are applicable to many hard optimization problems, such as optimization of functions with linear and nonlinear constraints, the traveling salesman problem, and problems of scheduling, partitioning, and control. The importance of these techniques has been growing in the last decade, since evolution programs are parallel in nature, and parallelism is one of the most promising directions in computer science.The book is self-contained and the only prerequisite is basic undergraduate mathematics.
