Abstract

Although leisure constraints that individuals have to cope with can negatively affect their social inclusion and satisfaction with life, little research has addressed the link between these variables. Therefore, the current paper examined the moderator role of leisure constraints on the relationship between satisfaction with life and leisure constraints among adults living in five different European countries. The respondents were 1,382 women and 877 men adults. The findings of analysis revealed that all factors used in the study accounted for 15% of the variance in satisfaction with life and social inclusion had a significant and positive impact on satisfaction with life. As a result, it can be said that leisure constraints had a moderating effect on the relationship between satisfaction with life and social inclusion. The present research study recommends that social inclusion should be encouraged through decreasing to leisure constraints to increase the life satisfaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper argues that the impact of international programmes intended to improve the effectiveness of higher education institutions in transitional states is related to the extent to which the programmes are successful, through their various projects, in creating social capital within the institutions concerned. Based on case studies of similar institutions in Poland and Romania, the paper finds that projects developed within the institution had a more lasting impact on organisational change, even when the project was of an academic nature, than did externally directed projects which were actually focused on achieving institutional change. Social capital theory offers an explanation of this difference, and suggests what the mechanisms at work may be. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

3. The European Union and the Limits to Accession: Romania and Poland in Comparative Perspective.

Abstract

The ongoing debates within European studies over the nature of Central and Eastern European accession to the European Union (EU) have generated interest about the legacies of the communist past because of the importance of the role of previous modes of governance on the current politics of the entire continent. How do these legacies interact with the accession process to produce the current outcomes? What is the role of the EU in producing these outcomes? What are the limitations of the EU?s influence on the newly acceded countries? Models of the diffusion of international norms which utilize the EU as an organization platform may provide the beginning of an answer to these questions. This paper argues that in particular the spiral model of norm diffusion is useful at describing the ?transition? of Central and Eastern European countries to liberal democratic states rather than the internalization and consolidation of these norms. The influence of the European Union upon the accession countries is limited because of the two factors which have had an effect upon the accession criteria. The first is the positive enforcement of EU conditionality which is no longer effect in a post-accession environment. The second is the emphasis upon harmonization rather than development within the accession countries. This has limited the depth of the changes within the societies of Central and Eastern Europe. By clarifying the theoretical issues surrounding the accession to the EU, this paper promotes a greater understanding of the current and future politics between ?old? and ?new?
