This paper aims at pointing out the evolution in real and financial plans in order to adhere to the EMU, using a comparative approach, on the example of Romania, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary. The main results of the study are the following: the four countries have made notable progress in the years preceding the current crisis; however, considerable efforts are still needed in order to comply with the euro zone, in terms of living standards, economic structure, degree of openness of the economy, etc.; refer the financial convergence, directions are needed to increase the financial intermediation and financial depth in Romania and Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary recording slightly more favourable indicators. On the other hand, central banks, except the Polish one, should significantly improve the transmission mechanism of monetary policy upon the financial and real sphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on earnings inequality within dual-earner couples in four Central-East European (CEE) countries: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. It aims to analyse the factors that influence earnings distribution within couples. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis uses OLS regression applied on the Statistics on Income and Living Conditions 2011 survey to reveal the various influence of relevant factors, especially relative education and the presence of children, on relative earnings. Findings – Women, on average, contribute less to a couple’s income than men. While considerably higher in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, such disparity is relatively low in Hungary and Poland. These countries have the highest share of dual-earner couples where the woman outearns her partner. The factor that substantially reduces the within-couple earnings inequality in all the analysed countries is a higher relative education of women. On the contrary, the presence of children, especially those of younger age, increases this disparity in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Originality/value – The research on within-couple earning inequality in CEE countries lags behind the relatively rich evidence from western Europe. This conceptual paper discusses key instruments for territorial cohesion in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) from a comparative historical analytical perspective amidst the neoliberalisation of EU Regional Policy, which has implications for the production and reinforcement of spatial inequalities in regional development. The neoliberalisation processes unfolding in the diff erent political-institutional contexts of CEE have implications for the movement, transformation and eff ectiveness of policies such as Regional Policy, complicating the holistic understanding of policy eff ects. Increasingly neoliberal regional policies across Europe, and in the diff erent path dependent political-institutional contexts of CEE in particular, raise questions about the eff ectiveness of Regional Policy to achieve territorial cohesion. Comparative historical analysis provides a method of inquiry into path dependent processes shaping institutions and aff ecting policy outcomes, and is therefore a useful approach for conceptualising regional political-institutional contexts and their implications for Regional Policy. Operational Programmes encompassed in national strategic documents from the Czech Republic, Estonia and Hungary over three programming periods are examined as the key instruments for the implementation of Regional Policy, the comparison of which reveals a diff erence in perspectives towards the common EU goals of competitiveness and growth as a means of achieving territorial cohesion. The research thus points to the need for deeper comparative understanding of the political-institutional contexts in the three countries in order to identify factors of eff ective policies and to tailor eff ective policy solutions to specific regional contexts, a task to be advanced in future studies of Regional Policy and political-institutional contexts of CEE. Abstract: For decades inner cities in East Central Europe have been characterised by physical dilapidation, ageing in place and selective outmigration. Post-socialist transition added to these developments by further outmigration due to suburbanisation but also provided new opportunities of residential change. In Polish and Czech second-order cities there is selective in-migration by younger households which remains so far almost hidden to the official statistics. Among them a new type of inner-city dwellers can be identified, that is transitory urbanites. They take the inner city as a perfect residential place in their current phase of life and value its characteristics both in emotional and pragmatic terms. But they do not expect to stay there for good and might leave the inner city in the future for another urban area or suburbia. However, while being present now they bring about residential change in the inner city and pave the way for future in-migrants of similar social status and age. From our material and observations, we can formulate the hypothesis that their importance has increased decisively during the last decade. Abstract: Buried (syn. sunken, sub-surface and sub-soil) archaeological features on arable land can frequently be discovered due to visually detectable changes in crop growth termed cropmarks. The aim of this paper was to demonstrate the range of features identified through cropmarks on aerial photographs in stands of main field crops in the Czech Republic. Low-altitude oblique aerial photographs of cropmarks were collected from an aircraft from a height of 300–500 m above ground during approximately 800 flight hours from 1992 to 2010. Some features discovered via cropmarks were excavated by standard archaeological methods. Around one thousand cropmarked sites were discovered. The highest density of archaeological sites was on sandy soils in dry lowland regions, and a substantially lower number on loess or clay soils or in regions above 350 m a.s.l. Cropmarks were best developed in barley (Hordeum vulgare), followed by wheat (Triticum aestivum), winter rape (Brassica napus) and lucerne (Medicago sativa). The most common archaeological sites discovered via positive cropmarks were ancient funeral and settlement areas, with many related features such as waste pits, sunken dwellings, post holes, ditches and graves. Abandoned roads were the most commonly negatively cropmarked features. Positive cropmarks represented 98% and negative only 2% of all recorded cropmarks. Archaeological features present beneath the modern arable horizon can irreversibly change sub-soil properties and growth of crops. Arable fields in Czech lowlands represent a unique archive of buried archaeological features, recording human activities in the landscape over the last 7500 years. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper presents the results of two separate geophysical investigations undertaken across the Sudetic Marginal Fault zone in the Bohemian Massif. This fault zone represents one of the most important tectonic features in central Europe. The first, preliminary, investigation used electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) to define the exact position of the main fault at two localities (Kamenička & Bílá Voda). Both profiles revealed a resistivity gradient that divided a complex of crystalline rocks with high resistivities from sedimentary deposits with low resistivities. From these data, sites were selected for palaeoseismic trenching. This trenching provided detailed information regarding the surveyed structures and lithologies. The second, more extensive, investigation used electrical resistivity tomography and gravimetric survey in order to extend the previously recognised features both laterally and to depth. The fault is displayed by the presence of an expressive resistivity gradient, even on profiles undertaken in more homogeneous lithologies. Finally, the most intensive investigations were conducted at Bílá Voda, where highly detailed ERT was undertaken on the floor of the trench. From this, it was possible to trace approximately logged geological structures to far greater depths and assess sedimentary thicknesses. A gravimetric survey was also undertaken adjacent to the trench. From modelling the gravitational effects of the fault zone, it is shown that the fault dips about 75° NE and that the vertical offset of Miocene vs. bedrock on the fault is approximately 200m. The presented study has demonstrated the value of undertaking two phases of geophysical exploration separated by a trenching investigation. It is considered that this methodology is particularly suitable for the study of active tectonics in analogous intraplate settings where fault slip-rate is low. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article discusses the environmental history of Central European countries that acceded to the European Union in 2004, noting changes they have realized in all respects since the fall of Germany's Berlin Wall in 1989. The paper focuses on environmental management in the Czech Republic, Poland, and other Central European countries. Topics include the histories of these countries following World War II, the emergence of environmental interests after removal of the Berlin Wall, and the closing gap between Western countries and Central European countries in environmental management.

Abstract: Although, at the time of accession to the EU, organic farming policies formally were equally developed in the Czech Republic and Poland, a closer investigation reveals some variation. This paper takes a policy network perspective to explore the policy differences between these two countries. Common network themes are used to link networks with policy output. It is argued that the capacity of the organic sector and its structural organization, its cohesion, and the relationship between organic interest groups and the government affect the political discourse, and, in consequence, how organic farming policy is elaborated. Abstract: Although Cambisols are the predominant soil type in Central Europe, especially in less favoured mountain areas, the long-term sustainability of winter wheat production on such soils has not been examined. In this paper, the yield of winter wheat over 50 years of farmyard manure, N, P and K fertilizer application (12 treatments altogether) was analysed in the Lukavec Crop Rotation Experiment (LCRE), which was established in 1955 in a potato-growing area (mean annual precipitation and temperature 686mm and 6.8°C, respectively). In the unfertilized control, low plant available P, K and Mg concentrations were recorded after 50 years. The annual yield growth (AYG) of grain was negative in the control as well as in low N treatments and positive in the 46kgNha−1 treatment. The mean AYG ranged from 7.1 to 72.8kgha−1 following the application of 46 to 121kgNha−1, respectively. In the first decade of the experiment, the increase in grain yield per 1kg of applied N was 7.3kgha−1 while in the last decade it was 27.1kgha−1. The mean grain yield of long-straw and short-straw varieties was 3.9 and 4.7tha−1, respectively. In the control, the grain yields were 4.3, 3.2 and 2.4tha−1 after root crops, legumes and cereals, respectively. To summarize the 50 years’ results of winter wheat production in the LCRE, grain yield was the most affected by mineral fertilizers, followed by the effect of variety, the preceding crop and farmyard manure application. The long-term sustainability of winter wheat production on low productive sandy-loamy Cambisols can be achieved only by adequate application of N, P and K fertilizers. High year-to-year variation in grain yield stresses the necessity of long-term studies in crop research, which are able to separate real trends from inter-annual fluctuations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
