Background: The present paper represented the third installment on the monogenoidean parasites collected during a workshop exploring the diversity of the parasites of fishes in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Previous reports on monogenoids collected during the workshop included species parasitizing beloniform and gerreid fishes. Purpose: During January 2016, the author, having responsibility for the identification and description of monogenoids, participated in a workshop supported by an Australian Biological Resources Study Grant to Drs. Thomas Cribb and Scott Cutmore, University of Queensland, to explore the diversity of parasites infecting the fishes of Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Methods: Approximately 100 species of marine fishes were necropsied for parasites. Standard procedures for collecting, mounting, drawing, and measuring of monogenoids were employed. Results: A new species of Euryhaliotrema was collected and described from the silver moony Monodactylus argenteus (Monodactylidae) and the first recording of Euryhaliotrema spirotubiforum on the dory snapper Lutjanus fulviflamma and Russell's snapper Lutjanus russellii (both Lutjanidae) in Moreton Bay was reported. The article discusses the voyage of the immigrant clipper ship "Queen of the Colonies" from England to Moreton Bay in Brisbane, Queensland in 1862 and 1863. It examines the the diary of passenger Henry John Ford, an engagement with the Confederate States of America raider "CSS Alabama," and the deaths of several passengers, particularly passenger Emma Barnfield, on the "Queen of the Colonies" due to the measles and other maladies. The article also discusses the leadership of ship captain R. Cairncross.

The influence of natural populations of the sub-surface deposit-feeding amphipod Victoriopisa australiensis on sediment biogeochemistry was assessed by randomly collecting 21 sediment cores in a zone of Coombabah Lake, southern Moreton Bay, Australia, where the benthic infauna was dominated by this species. Cores were incubated sequentially to determine sediment–water column fluxes of oxygen, dissolved inorganic carbon and inorganic N species, followed by incubations to determine rates of denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) using the isotope pairing technique. Finally, each core was sieved in order to determine the population and biomass of amphipods present. Whilst all measures of overall benthic metabolism (sediment oxygen demand, and effluxes of inorganic carbon and nitrogen) showed increased with amphipod density, with rates being stimulated 70–220% at the highest categorised density range of 2,500–3,500 ind m−2, only the correlation with dissolved inorganic carbon was statistically significant. In contrast, there were no discernable trends between amphipod densities and any of the N-cycle processes with the slopes of all correlations being very close to zero. These results highlight the differences in mesocosm simulations of fauna effects, which primarily relate to shifts in rates of organic matter turnover, compared to natural sediments where fauna effects relate more to induced changes in rates of organic matter deposition. Therefore, while mesocosms represent a powerful tool to investigate the mechanisms by which fauna influences microbial metabolism in the sediment, only studies of natural sediments can determine to what extent these mechanisms function in situ. The optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating method was used to determine the geochronology of seven relict beach ridges that sit immediately behind the modern beach at Beachmere, a low-energy sandy coast within Moreton Bay, Queensland. Between 2600 ± 400 and 1700 ± 130 years ago, the shoreline eroded and foreshore sediment was deposited over the older beach deposit. Subsequently, there was a 1500-year period of shoreline progradation: the shoreline advanced 0.16 m/y between 1700 ± 130 and 1140 ± 80 years ago; and 0.41 m/y between 1140 ± 80 and around 200 years ago. Shortly after 690 ± 60 years ago, a series of well-developed regularly spaced beach ridges gave way to an intertidal flat and then deposition of a set of lower amplitude, closely spaced beach ridges. The younger ridges were deposited between 230 ± 40 and 140 ± 50 years ago, at a rate of around 1.06 m/y. During the last several decades, much of the Beachmere shoreline has eroded into these younger relict ridges. Drivers of these changes in shoreline sedimentary regime are yet to be accurately determined; however, it seems likely they are related to switches that occur in the nearshore sand transport pathway. Our results demonstrate the utility of the OSL method for providing insights into coastal change that occurred in the historical and recent geological period. Better understanding the tempo of shoreline change in the recent past is particularly relevant for assessments of vulnerability to erosion of rapidly developing, low-lying sandy coasts such as northern Moreton Bay.
