This paper responds to a resurgence of interest in constructing long-term time proxies of human activity, especially but not limited to models of population change over the Pleistocene and/or Holocene. While very much agreeing with the need for this increased attention, we emphasize three important issues that can all be thought of as modifiable reporting unit problems: the impact of (i) archaeological periodization, (ii) uneven event durations and (iii) geographical nucleation-dispersal phenomena. Drawing inspiration from real-world examples from prehistoric Britain, Greece and Japan, we explore their consequences and possible mitigation via a reproducible set of tactical simulations. This paper reexamines the archaeological evidence for three episodes of rural abandonment and resettlement in the countrysides of Late Roman Greece (200–700 CE): an abandoned Late Hellenistic-Early Roman countryside (second century BCE to third century CE), a decline in the third to early fourth centuries CE, and the Dark Age beginning in the seventh century CE. The first and third episodes of abandonment, especially, have sharply defined Late Antiquity (250–700 CE) as a healthy period of new rural settlement and economic resurgence, and the entire pattern has been described in the terms of “boom-and-bust” demographic and economic cycles. Closer readings of the archaeological data can contribute to more sensitive pictures of continuity and change in settlement and connectivity in the late antique Corinthian countryside and other regions in Greece. The paper presents the preliminary results of the excavations of 2017 season at the Mycenaean site of Kastrouli, Phokis. It attempts as well a preliminary interpretation of the data obtained during the 2016 season, now based on the first results of the still ongoing archaeometric research. During the second season of excavation a circular feature in the eastern side of the fortification wall has been investigated, and a second gate with its access ramp has been located, in addition to the gate already known on the western side. On the E-SE side of the fortified area some walls and foundations visible on the surface led to the excavation of the Building 1, which has been destroyed by fire. Further, a very long wall belonging to a large building (Building 2), or possibly to a complex of buildings, has been cleaned and documented on the southern terrace of the fortified area. Finally, two large holes dug by looters, one close to the Western gate and the other close to the Tomb A, have been examined and refilled with soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The factors which control the crest settlements of the Kremasta Dam (Central Greece), one of the highest earthfill dams in Europe, were analyzed on the basis of the threshold correlation. The latter is a new stochastic technique which permits identification of parts of time series which are highly correlated on the basis of the optimization of the correlation coefficient between two parameters in combination with a high-pass filter of gradually increasing width. Based on a unique, >35 years long monitoring record consisting of leveling data, reservoir levels and precipitation levels we formed three time series describing the parameters which may affect the dam geometry (fluctuations of the reservoir level, of the rate of change of the reservoir level and of the rate of rainfall) and a fourth time series describing the dam settlements (settlement index fluctuations). Threshold correlation analysis permitted to identify critical levels for each of the above three parameters influencing the dam settlements. It was found that none of the three parameters alone can explain excessive dam settlements, but if the critical values of the three parameters are at the same time exceeded (i.e. under a conditional Boolean probability), the rate of the settlements exceeds its critical value.
