Introduction: Effective primary healthcare services have been identified by the World Health Organization as the most equitable approach to enhancing universal healthcare. Robust models of mentoring for registered nurses (RNs) transitioning to primary healthcare roles have yet to be described in the Australian context. A robust mentoring model can support RNs to fulfill their potential, bridging the gap between theory and practice. In 2015, the peak body for nurses in primary health care (PHC) began developing a transition to practice program, including embedded mentoring to support newly graduated and more experienced registered and enrolled nurses. This quality improvement study reports the experiences and perspectives of nurses participating as mentors in two separate offerings of the program delivered between 2019 and 2021. Method: A two-phase concurrent mixed methods evaluation utilized data from pre- and post online surveys and post program meetings. Quantitative items underwent descriptive analyses. Thematic analysis of free-text responses and comments was conducted independently by two researchers. Mentors voluntarily provided self-report data and were informed that data is routinely collected to support continuous quality improvement processes for all programs. An Information Sheet informed mentors of data usage, confidentiality, and options to withdraw without penalty from the program at any time. Results: Seventy-nine mentors were recruited to support two groups of nurses (N = 111). Mentor self-rated overall satisfaction with program participation was 86.67% (very or extremely satisfied). Mentors described being "witness to mentee growth," "having facilitated access to learning" and receiving "unexpected benefits" including personal and professional growth and enhanced enthusiasm for their role in PHC. Conclusion: The embedded mentoring reported in this article combined a focus on skills acquisition and professional identity with the provision of a range of resources and support activities. Education is state-run in Australia, and within each of the eight states and territories there are both government and independent schooling systems. This paper details the position of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (GLBTIQ) students within Australian education policy documents nationally, focusing on the three largest states and educational sectors in Australia. Survey data are used to report on the schooling experiences of over 3000 Australian GLBTIQ young people aged 14–21 years. Data from interviews with key policy informants identify both the obstacles to implementing policies, and how such obstacles have been overcome. Much official policy sees sexuality education as promoting inclusive, protective and affirming messages around GLBTIQ students. There exist significant correlations between policy and a variety of well-being and psycho-social outcomes for GLBTIQ students, including lowered incidence of homophobic abuse and suicide, and the creation of supportive school environments. Background: The Community Health Program of the 1970s was an attempt to introduce a national community health model. However, although community-based health care is an important element of the health systems of all Australian states and territories, the definition of what constitutes a 'community health service' in Australia today is not clear. Methods: A search of government websites failed to provide information about the types and characteristics of services that would be included in the term. Therefore, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 key informants in roles with responsibility for primary and community health services from health departments in all Australian states and territories. Questions explored their understanding of community health services as they operated in their jurisdiction. The study adopted a blended inductive and deductive orientation within a qualitative descriptive method. Results: There was little consistency in the way community health services were described across jurisdictions. The defining attributes of a 'community health centre' described by an international peak body did not apply to services in the majority of jurisdictions in Australia. Victoria was more aligned with the description than other jurisdictions, with organisations defined through legislation and a separate funding stream to support aspects of service delivery. Conclusions: Those designing and implementing national health system programs and reforms need to be aware that terms, such as 'community health', do not mean the same thing across jurisdictions; attempts to create consistency have to recognise differences that will affect new initiatives, as well as the spread of successful policies and programs from one jurisdiction to another. Without a consistent description, it is difficult to explore the current role of community-based health care across Australia in improving access to health care. 'Community health' is an important element of Australian health systems and recognised as such in national policy. Interviews with 13 key informants in roles with responsibility for primary and community health services from health departments in Australian states/ territories found little uniformity in the way community health was described. Objectives: Though several studies have focused on risk factors associated with excess weight gain, little is known about the extent to which socio-cultural beliefs about body sizes may contribute to risk of excess weight gain, especially in non-Western migrant communities. Drawing on socio-cultural and attribution theories, this study mainly explored socio-cultural beliefs about an ideal body size among Australian residents who were born in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Implications of body size beliefs for risk of excess weight gain after immigration have also been discussed. Design: Employing a qualitative design, 24 in-depth interviews were conducted with Australian residents who were born in SSA. Thematic content analysis was undertaken to ensure that participants' experiences and views were clearly captured. Results: According to the participants, a moderately large body size is idealised in the SSA community and post-migration weight gain is commonly regarded as evidence of well-being. While desirability of a moderately large body size was noted by some participants, others were concerned about health risks (e.g. high blood pressure) associated with excess weight gain. Moreover, body size ideals seemed to be different for men and women in the SSA community and these ideals were mainly promoted by family and friends. Participants reported that women with very slim (skinny) body sizes are often regarded as persons suffering from health problems, whereas those with 'plumpy' body types are often considered beautiful. Participants also noted that men are expected to look well-built and muscular while those with big bellies are often seen as financially rich. Conclusions: Participants' interpretation of post-migration weight gain as evidence of well-being calls for urgent intervention as risk of excess weight gain appear to be high in this immigrant group. Introduction: Opioid dependence is a complex health condition often requiring long-term treatment. The main objectives of treatment are to reduce dependence and the associated morbidity and mortality. Opioid replacement therapy (ORT) is an effective pharmacological therapy for opioid dependence. The aims of this research were to explore barriers and enablers to ORT in rural areas of Australia. Design and Methods: A qualitative study design incorporating semi-structured interviews was used to explore views of people in ORT. Interviews were analysed for emergent themes and issues. Results: Barriers to ORT were restrictiveness, stigma, the medication and structure of the program. Enablers were structure of the program, access to takeaway doses, effect on drug use and the medication. Discussion: To improve access and retention in ORT programs action is needed to facilitate programs meeting the needs of rural people, including reducing cost of medication, addressing the restrictiveness of programs and effect on employment opportunities, and stigma associated with drug use and addiction in communities. Conclusions: Barriers and enablers to ORT programs exist in the rural areas studied. Geographical distance, inability to gain and maintain social connections including employment, and lack of community education addressing stigma are significant barriers to ORT in these areas.
